Search

Giant anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and magneto-optical activity can emerge in magnets with topologically non-trivial degeneracies. However, identifying the specific band structure features like Weyl points, nodal lines or planes which generate the anomalous response is a challenging issue. Since the low-energy interband transitions can govern the static AHE, we addressed this question in the prototypical magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ also hosting nodal lines by broadband polarized reflectivity and magneto-optical Kerr effect spectroscopy with a focus on the far-infrared range. In the linear dichroism spectrum we observe a strong resonance at 40\,meV, which also shows up in the optical Hall conductivity spectrum and primarily determines the static AHE, thus, confirms its intrinsic origin. Our material-specific theory reproduces the experimental data remarkably well and shows that strongly tilted nodal line segments around the Fermi energy generate the resonance. While the Weyl points only give vanishing contributions, these segments of the nodal lines gapped by the spin-orbit coupling dominate the low-energy optical response.

Reproducing the electronic structure of AM$_4$X$_8$ lacunar spinels with a breathing pyrochlore lattice is a great theoretical challenge due to the interplay of various factors. The character of the M$_4$X$_4$ cluster orbitals is critically influenced by the Jahn-Teller instability, the spin-orbit interaction, and also by the magnetic state of the clusters. Consequently, to reproduce the narrow-gap semiconducting nature of these moderately correlated materials requires advanced approaches, since the strength of the inter-cluster hopping is strongly affected by the character of the cluster orbitals. In order to provide a solid experimental basis for theoretical studies, we performed broadband optical spectroscopy on a large set of lacunar spinels, with systematically changing ions at the A and M sites as well as the ligand (A=Ga, Ge, Al; M=V, Mo, Nb, Ta; X=S, Se). Our study covers the range of phonon excitations and also electronic transitions near the gap edge. In the phonon excitation spectrum a limited subset of the symmetry allowed modes is observed in the cubic state, with a few additional modes emerging upon the symmetry-lowering structural transition. All the infrared active modes are assigned to vibrations of the ligands and ions at the A sites, with no obvious contribution from the M-site ions. Concerning the electronic states, we found that all compounds are narrow-gap semiconductors ($E_\mathrm{g} = 130 - 350\,$meV) already in their room-temperature cubic state and their structural transitions induce weak, if any, changes in the band gap. The gap value is decreased when substituting S with Se and also when replacing $3d$ ions by $4d$ or $5d$ ions at the M sites., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We report magnetic, thermodynamic, thermal expansion, and on detailed optical experiments on the layered compound $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ focusing on the THz and sub-gap optical response across the structural phase transition from the monoclinic high-temperature to the rhombohedral low-temperature structure, where the stacking sequence of the molecular layers is changed. This type of phase transition is characteristic for a variety of tri-halides crystallizing in a layered honeycomb-type structure and so far is unique, as the low-temperature phase exhibits the higher symmetry. One motivation is to unravel the microscopic nature of spin-orbital excitations via a study of temperature and symmetry-induced changes. We document a number of highly unusual findings: A characteristic two-step hysteresis of the structural phase transition, accompanied by a dramatic change of the reflectivity. An electronic excitation, which appears in a narrow temperature range just across the structural phase transition, and a complex dielectric loss spectrum in the THz regime, which could indicate remnants of Kitaev physics. Despite significant symmetry changes across the monoclinic to rhombohedral phase transition, phonon eigenfrequencies and the majority of spin-orbital excitations are not strongly influenced. Obviously, the symmetry of the single molecular layers determine the eigenfrequencies of most of these excitations. Finally, from this combined terahertz, far- and mid-infrared study we try to shed some light on the so far unsolved low energy (< 1eV) electronic structure of the ruthenium $4d^5$ electrons in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

We report on THz, infrared reflectivity and transmission experiments for wave numbers from 10 to 8000 cm$^{-1}$ ($\sim$ 1 meV - 1 eV) and for temperatures from 5 to 295 K on the Kitaev candidate material {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$. As reported earlier, the compound under investigation passes through a first-order structural phase transition, from a monoclinic high-temperature to a rhombohedral low-temperature phase. The phase transition shows an extreme and unusual hysteretic behavior, which extends from 60 to 166 K. In passing this phase transition, in the complete frequency range investigated we found a significant reflectance change, which amounts almost a factor of two. We provide a broadband spectrum of dielectric constant, dielectric loss and optical conductivity from the THz to the mid infrared regime and study in detail the phonon response and the low-lying electronic density of states. We provide evidence for the onset of an optical energy gap, which is of order 200 meV, in good agreement with the gap derived from measurements of the DC electrical resistivity. Remarkably, the onset of the gap exhibits a strong blue shift on increasing temperatures., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

We report on THz time-domain spectroscopy on multiferroic GeV4S8, which undergoes orbital ordering at a Jahn-Teller transition at 30.5 K and exhibits antiferromagnetic order below 14.6 K. The THz experiments are complemented by dielectric experiments at audio and radio frequencies. We identify a low-lying excitation close to 15 cm-1, which is only weakly temperature dependent and probably corresponds to a molecular excitation within the electronic level scheme of the V4 clusters. In addition, we detect complex temperature-dependent behavior of a low-lying phononic excitation, closely linked to the onset of orbitally-driven ferroelectricity. In the high-temperature cubic phase, which is paramagnetic and orbitally disordered, this excitation is of relaxational character, becomes an overdamped Lorentzian mode in the orbitally ordered phase below the Jahn-Teller transition, and finally appears as well-defined phonon excitation in the antiferromagnetic state. Abrupt changes in real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric permittivity show that orbital ordering appears via a structural phase transition with strong first-order character and that the onset of antiferromagnetic order is accompanied by significant structural changes, which are of first-order character, too. Dielectric spectroscopy documents that, at low frequencies, significant dipolar relaxations are present in the orbitally ordered, paramagnetic phase only. In contrast to the closely related GaV4S8, this relaxation dynamics that most likely mirrors coupled orbital and polar fluctuations does not seem to be related to the dynamic processes detected in the THz regime., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

We report on optical spectroscopy on the lacunar spinels GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GeV$_4$S$_8$ in the spectral range from 100 to 23000 cm$^{-1}$ and for temperatures from 5 to 300 K. These multiferroic spinel systems reveal Jahn-Teller driven ferroelectricity and complex magnetic order at low temperatures. We study the infrared-active phonon modes and the low-lying electronic excitations in the cubic high-temperature phase, as well as in the orbitally and in the magnetically ordered low-temperature phases. We compare the phonon modes in these two compounds, which undergo different symmetry-lowering Jahn-Teller transitions into ferroelectric and orbitally ordered phases, and exhibit different magnetic ground states. We follow the splitting of the phonon modes at the structural phase transition and detect additional splittings at the onset of antiferromagnetic order in GeV$_4$S$_8$. We observe electronic transitions within the $d$-derived bands of the V$_4$ clusters and document a significant influence of the structural and magnetic phase transitions on the narrow electronic band gaps., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

Here we present a detailed study of the THz and FIR response of the mixed perovskite manganite system Eu$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$MnO$_3$ for holmium concentrations x = 0.1 and 0.3. We compare the magnetic excitations of the four different magnetically ordered phases (A-type antiferromagnetic, sinusoidally modulated collinear, helical phases with spin planes perpendicular to the crystallographic a and c axes). The transition between the two latter phases goes hand in hand with a switching of the ferroelectric polarization from P||a to P||c. Special emphasis is paid to the temperature dependence of the excitations at this transition. We find a significant change of intensity indicating that the exchange striction mechanism cannot be the only mechanism to induce dipolar weight to spin-wave excitations. We also focus on excitations within the incommensurate collinear antiferromagnetic phase and find a so far unobserved excitation close to 40 cm$^{-1}$. A detailed analysis of optical weight gives a further unexpected result: In the multiferroic phase with P||c all the spectral weight of the electromagnons comes from the lowest phonon mode. However, for the phase with the polarization P||a additional spectral weight must be transferred from higher frequencies., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

In FeSc2S4 spin-orbital exchange competes with strong spin-orbit coupling, suppressing long-range spin and orbital order and, hence, this material represents one of the rare examples of a spin-orbital liquid ground state. Moreover, it is close to a quantum-critical point separating the ordered and disordered regimes. Using THz and FIR spectroscopy we study low-lying excitations in FeSc2S4 and provide clear evidence for a spin-orbiton, an excitation of strongly entangled spins and orbitals. It becomes particularly well pronounced upon cooling, when advancing deep into the quantum-critical regime. Moreover, indications of an underlying structureless excitation continuum are found, a possible signature of quantum criticality., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures (including 4 pages and 5 figures in Supplemental Material). We report on optical transmission spectroscopy of the Cr-based frustrated triangular antiferromagnets CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4, and the spinels CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4 in the near-infrared to visible-light frequency range. We explore the possibility to search for spin correlations far above the magnetic ordering temperature and for anomalies in the magnon lifetime in the magnetically ordered state by probing exciton-magnon sidebands of the spin-forbidden crystal-field transitions of the Cr3+ ions (spin S = 3/2). In CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4 the appearance of fine structures below T_N is assigned to magnon sidebands by comparison with neutron scattering results. The temperature dependence of the line width of the most intense sidebands in both compounds can be described by an Arrhenius law. For CuCrO2 the sideband associated with the 4A2 -> 2T2 transition can be observed even above T_N. Its line width does not show a kink at the magnetic ordering temperature and can alternatively be described by a Z2 vortex scenario proposed previously for similar materials. The exciton-magnon features in alpha-CaCr2O4 are more complex due to the orthorhombic distortion. While for CdCr2O4 magnon sidebands are identified below T_N and one sideband excitation is found to persist across the magnetic ordering transition, only a weak fine structure related to magnetic ordering has been observed in ZnCr2O4., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, all comments are welcome and appreciated, accepted for publication in PRB

We report on the phonon spectrum of Ba3Cr2O8 determined by infrared spectroscopy, and on specific heat measurements across the Jahn-Teller transition in magnetic fields up to 9 T. Phonon modes split below the Jahn-Teller transition, which occurs at T_{JT} = 70 K as detected by specific heat measurements. The field-dependent specific heat data is analyzed in terms of the contributions from lattice, magnetic and orbital degrees of freedom. In contrast to the isostructural compound Sr3Cr2O8 our analysis does not indicate the existence of orbital fluctuations below the Jahn-Teller transition in Ba3Cr2O8., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report on a systematic optical investigation of w\"ustite. In addition, the sample under consideration, Fe0.93O, has been characterized in detail by electrical transport, dielectric, magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. From infrared reflectivity experiments, phonon properties, Drude-like conductivity contributions and electronic transitions have been systematically investigated. The phonon modes reveal a clear splitting below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, similar to observations in other transition-metal monoxides and in spinel compounds which have been explained in terms of a spin-driven Jahn-Teller effect. The electronic transitions can best be described assuming a crystal-field parameter Dq = 750 cm-1 and a spin-orbit coupling constant \lambda = 95 cm-1. A well defined crystal field excitation at low temperatures reveals significant broadening on increasing temperature with an overall transfer of optical weight into dc conductivity contributions. This fact seems to indicate a melting of the on-site excitation into a Drude behavior of delocalized charge carriers. The optical band gap in w\"ustite is close to 1.0 eV at room temperature. With decreasing temperatures and passing the magnetic phase transition we have detected a strong blue shift of the correlation-induced band edge, which amounts more than 15% and has been rarely observed in antiferromagnets., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

We report a linear dependence of the phonon splitting \Delta\omega on the non-dominant exchange coupling constant J_{nd} in the antiferromagnetic transition-metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, NiO, and in the frustrated antiferromagnetic oxide spinels CdCr2O4, MgCr2O4, and ZnCr2O4. It directly confirms the theoretical prediction of an exchange induced splitting of the zone-centre optical phonon for the monoxides and explains the magnitude and the change of sign of the phonon splitting on changing the sign of the non-dominant exchange also in the frustrated oxide spinels. The experimentally found linear relation \hbar\Delta\omega = \beta J_{nd} S^2 with slope \beta = 3.7 describes the splitting for both systems and agrees with the observations in the antiferromagnets KCoF3 and KNiF3 with perovskite structure and negligible next-nearest neighbour coupling. The common behavior found for very different classes of cubic antiferromagnets suggests a universal dependence of the exchange-induced phonon splitting at the antiferromagnetic transition on the non-dominant exchange coupling., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Dielectric loss spectra covering 13 decades in frequency were collected for 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, a monohydroxy alcohol that exhibits a prominent Debye-like relaxation, typical for several classes of hydrogen-bonded liquids. The thermal variation of the dielectric absorption amplitude agrees well with that of the hydrogen-bond equilibrium population, experimentally mapped out using near infrared (NIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Despite this agreement, temperature-jump NIR spectroscopy reveals that the hydrogen-bond switching rate does not define the frequency position of the prominent absorption peak. This contrasts with widespread notions and models based thereon, but is consistent with a recent approach., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report on the magnetic and phononic excitation spectrum of Sr3Cr2O8 determined by THz and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements across the Jahn-Teller transition, which is detected by specific-heat measurements to occur at T_{JT} = 285 K. We identify the singlet-triplet excitations in the dimerized ground state and estimate the exchange couplings in the system. Moreover, ESR absorptions were observed up to T* = 120 K with a linewidth proportional to exp{-Delta/k_{B}T} and Delta/k_{B} = 388 K indicating a phonon-mediated spin relaxation via the excited orbital state of the Cr $e$ doublet in the orbitally ordered state. In contrast to the expected drastic change of the IR active phonons upon entering the low-symmetry Jahn-Teller distorted phase below T_{JT}, we find an extended regime T*

We present the results of transmittance experiments on GdMnO3 multiferroic manganite in the far infrared frequency range. The spectra allow to obtain the positions and the intensity of the high frequency electromagnon (~ 75 cm-1) in this compound. We present the comparative analysis of the high and low frequency electromagnons across the phase diagram of GdMnO3. The traces of the electromagnon excitation can be detected even at room temperature, i.e. deeply in the paramagnetic state., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Magnetic dc susceptibility between 1.5 and 800 K, ac susceptibility and magnetization, thermodynamic properties, temperature dependence of radio and audio-wave dielectric constants and conductivity, contact-free dielectric constants at mm-wavelengths, as well as ferroelectric polarization are reported for single crystalline BiFeO3. A well developed anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility signals the onset of antiferromagnetic order close to 635 K. Beside this anomaly no further indications of phase or glass transitions are indicated in the magnetic dc and ac susceptibilities down to the lowest temperatures. The heat capacity has been measured from 2 K up to room temperature and significant contributions from magnon excitations have been detected. From the low-temperature heat capacity an anisotropy gap of the magnon modes of the order of 6 meV has been determined. The dielectric constants measured in standard two-point configuration are dominated by Maxwell-Wagner like effects for temperatures T > 300 K and frequencies below 1 MHz. At lower temperatures the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and loss reveals no anomalies outside the experimental errors, indicating neither phase transitions nor strong spin phonon coupling. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant was measured contact free at microwave frequencies. At room temperature the dielectric constant has an intrinsic value of 53. The loss is substantial and strongly frequency dependent indicating the predominance of hopping conductivity. Finally, in small thin samples we were able to measure the ferroelectric polarization between 10 and 200 K. We report on infrared, Raman, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4 single crystals. We estimate the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest neighbor exchange constants from the magnetic susceptibility and extract the spin-spin correlation functions obtained from the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic contribution to the specific heat. By comparing with the frequency shift of the infrared optical phonons above TN , we derive estimates for the spin-phonon coupling constants in these systems. The observation of phonon modes which are both Raman and infrared active suggest the loss of inversion symmetry below the Neel temperature in CdCr2O4 in agreement with theoretical predictions by Chern and coworkers [Phys. Rev. B 74, 060405 (2006)]. In ZnCr2O4 several new modes appear below TN, but no phonon modes could be detected which are both Raman and infrared active indicating the conservation of inversion symmetry in the low temperature phase., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

We provide a detailed study of the reflectivity of multiferroic TbMnO_3 for wave numbers from 40 cm^{-1} to 1000 cm^{-1} and temperatures 5 K < T < 300 K. Excitations are studied for polarization directions E || a, the polarization where electromagnons are observed, and for E || c, the direction of the spontaneous polarization in this material. The temperature dependencies of eigenfrequencies, damping constants and polar strengths of all modes are studied and analyzed. For E || a and below the spiral ordering temperature of about 27 K we observe a transfer of optical weight from phonon excitations to electromagnons, which mainly involves low-frequency phonons. For E || c an unusual increase of the total polar strength and hence of the dielectric constant is observed indicating significant transfer of dynamic charge probably within manganese-oxygen bonds on decreasing temperatures., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for submission in European Physical Journal B

Crystal structure, specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity studies of the heavy fermion system CeNi_{9-x}Cu_xGe_4 (0 <= x <= 1) reveal a continuous tuning of the ground state by Ni/Cu substitution from an effectively fourfold degenerate non-magnetic Kondo ground state of CeNi_9Ge_4 (with pronounced non-Fermi-liquid features) towards a magnetically ordered, effectively twofold degenerate ground state in CeNi_8CuGe_4 with T_N = 175 +- 5 mK. Quantum critical behavior, C/T ~ \chi ~ -ln(T), is observed for x about 0.4. Hitherto, CeNi_{9-x}Cu_xGe_4 represents the first system where a substitution-driven quantum phase transition is connected not only with changes of the relative strength of Kondo effect and RKKY interaction, but also with a reduction of the effective crystal field ground state degeneracy., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

The reflectivity of single-crystalline CoO has been studied by optical spectroscopy for wave numbers ranging from 100 to 28,000\wn and for temperatures 8 $< T <$ 325 K\@. A splitting of the cubic IR-active phonon mode on passing the antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_N$ = 289 K has been observed. At low temperatures the splitting amounts to 15.0\wn. In addition, we studied the splitting of the cubic crystal field ground state of the Co$^{2+}$ ions due to spin-orbit coupling, a tetragonal crystal field, and exchange interaction. Below $T_N$, magnetic dipole transitions between the exchange-split levels are identified and the energy-level scheme can be well described with a spin-orbit coupling $\lambda = 151.1\wn$, an exchange constant $J = 17.5\wn$, and a tetragonal crystal-field parameter $D = -47.8\wn$. Already in the paramagnetic state electric quadrupole transitions between the spin-orbit split level have been observed. At high frequencies, two electronic levels of the crystal-field-split $d$-manifold were identified at 8,000 and 18,500\wn., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

We report on optical measurements of the 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF3. The crystal-field excitations of the Cu2+ ions have been observed and their temperature dependence can be understood in terms of magnetic and exchange-induced dipole mechanisms and vibronic interactions. Above T_N we observe a new temperature scale T_S characterized by the emergence of narrow absorption features that correlate with changes of the orbital ordering as observed by Paolasini et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 106403 (2002)]. The appearance of these optical transitions provides evidence for a symmetry change above the Neel temperature that affects the orbital ordering and paves the way for the antiferromagnetic ordering., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We studied the optical properties of antiferromagnetic ZnCr2Se4 by infrared spectroscopy up to 28,000 cm-1 and for temperatures from 5 to 295 K. At the magnetic phase transition at 21 K, one of the four phonon modes reveals a clear splitting of 3 cm-1 as a result of spin-phonon coupling, the other three optical eigenmodes only show shifts of the eigenfrequencies. The antiferromagnetic ordering and the concomitant splitting of the phonon mode can be suppressed in a magnetic field of 7 T. At higher energies we observed a broad excitation band which is dominated by a two-peak-structure at about 18,000 cm-1 and 22,000 cm-1, respectively. These energies are in good agreement with the expected spin-allowed crystal-field transition of the Cr3+ ions. The unexpected strength of these forbidden onsite d-d transitions is attributed to a considerable hybridization of the selenium p with the chromium d orbitals., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We report on phonon properties and electronic transitions in CaCu3Ti4O12, a material which reveals a colossal dielectric constant at room temperature without any ferroelectric transition. The results of far- and mid-infrared measurements are compared to those obtained by broadband dielectric and millimeter-wave spectroscopy on the same single crystal. The unusual temperature dependence of phonon eigenfrequencies, dampings and ionic plasma frequencies of low lying phonon modes are analyzed and discussed in detail. Electronic excitations below 4 eV are identified as transitions between full and empty hybridized oxygen-copper bands and between oxygen-copper and unoccupied Ti 3d bands. The unusually small band gap determined from the dc-conductivity (~200 meV) compares well with the optical results., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Polar phonons of HgCr2S4 and CdCr2S4 are studied by far-infrared spectroscopy as a function of temperature and external magnetic field. Eigenfrequencies, damping constants, effective plasma frequencies and Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relations, and effective charges are determined. Ferromagnetic CdCr2S4 and antiferromagnetic HgCr2S4 behave rather similar. Both compounds are dominated by ferromagnetic exchange and although HgCr2S4 is an antiferromagnet, no phonon splitting can be observed at the magnetic phase transition. Temperature and magnetic field dependence of the eigenfrequencies show no anomalies indicating displacive polar soft mode behavior. However, significant effects are detected in the temperature dependence of the plasma frequencies indicating changes in the nature of the bonds and significant charge transfer. In HgCr2S4 we provide experimental evidence that the magnetic field dependence of specific polar modes reveal shifts exactly correlated with the magnetization showing significant magneto-dielectric effects even at infrared frequencies., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Detailed far-infrared spectra of the optical phonons are reported for antiferromagnetic MnO. Eigenfrequencies, phonon damping and effective plasma frequencies are studied as a function of temperature. Special attention is paid to the phonon splitting at the antiferromagnetic phase transition. The results are compared to recent experimental and theoretical studies of the spin-phonon coupling in frustrated magnets, which are explained in terms of a spin-driven Jahn-Teller effect, and to ab initio and model calculations, which predict phonon splitting induced by magnetic order., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The temperature dependence of eigenfrequencies and intensities of the IR active modes has been investigated for the antiferromagnetic chromium spinel compounds CdCr2O4, ZnCr2O4, ZnCr2S4, ZnCr2Se4, and HgCr2S4 by IR spectroscopy for temperatures from 5 K to 300 K. At the transition into the magnetically ordered phases, and driven by spin-phonon coupling, most compounds reveal significant splittings of the phonon modes. This is true for geometrically frustrated CdCr2O4, and ZnCr2O4, for bond frustrated ZnCr2S4 and for ZnCr2Se4, which also is bond frustrated, but dominated by ferromagnetic exchange. The pattern of splitting is different for the different compounds and crucially depends on the nature of frustration and of the resulting spin order. HgCr2S4, which is almost ferromagnetic, exhibits no splitting of the eigenfrequencies, but shows significant shifts due to ferromagnetic spin fluctuations., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Spin-phonon coupling and magnetodielectric effects of ZnCr2Se4 were investigated by means of infrared (IR) spectroscopy as a function of temperature and magnetic field. ZnCr2Se4 is dominated by ferromagnetic exchange but undergoes antiferromagnetic order at T = 21 K. In the magnetically ordered phase the low-frequency IR active phonon splits, indicating strong dynamic anisotropy via magnetic exchange interactions. Antiferromagnetic order and concomitantly the phonon splitting is wiped out by external magnetic fields. The infrared and Terahertz properties of GdMnO_3 have been investigated as function of temperature and magnetic field, with special emphasis on the phase boundary between the incommensurate and the canted antiferromagnetic structures. The heterogeneous incommensurate phase reveals strong magnetodielectric effects, characterized by significant magnetoelectric contributions to the static dielectric permittivity and by the existence of electrically excited magnons (electromagnons). In the commensurate canted antiferromagnetic phase the magnetoelectric contributions to the dielectric constant and electromagnons are suppressed. Utilizing magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion and IR spectroscopy we provide experimental evidence that the two subsequent antiferromagnetic transitions in ZnCr_2S_4 at T_N1 = 15 K and T_N2= 8 K are accompanied by significant thermal and phonon anomalies. The anomaly at T_N2 reveals a strong temperature hysteresis typical for a first-order transformation. Due to strong spin-phonon coupling both magnetic phase transitions induce a splitting of phonon modes, where at T_N1 the high-frequency and at T_N2 the low-frequency modes split. The anomalies and phonon splitting observed at T_N2 are strongly suppressed by magnetic field. Regarding the small positive Curie-Weiss temperature Theta= 8 K, we argue that this scenario of two different magnetic phases with concomitant different magneto-elastic couplings results from the strong competition of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange of equal strength., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Polymeric methyltrioxorhenium, {(CH_{3})_{0.92}ReO_{3}}_{\infty} (poly-MTO), is the first member of a new class of organometallic hybrids which adopts the structural pattern and physical properties of classical perovskites in two dimensions (2D). We demonstrate how the electronic structure of poly-MTO can be tailored by intercalation of organic donor molecules, such as tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) or bis-(ethylendithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF), and by the inorganic acceptor SbF$_3$. Integration of donor molecules leads to a more insulating behavior of poly-MTO, whereas SbF$_3$ insertion does not cause any significant change in the resistivity. The resistivity data of pure poly-MTO is remarkably well described by a two-dimensional electron system. Below 38 K an unusual resistivity behavior, similar to that found in doped cuprates, is observed: The resistivity initially increases approximately as $\rho \sim$ ln$(1/T$) before it changes into a $\sqrt{T}$ dependence below 2 K. As an explanation we suggest a crossover from purely two-dimensional charge-carrier diffusion within the \{ReO$_2$\}$_{\infty}$ planes at high temperatures to three-dimensional diffusion at low temperatures in a disorder-enhanced electron-electron interaction scenario (Altshuler-Aronov correction). Furthermore, a linear positive magnetoresistance was found in the insulating regime, which is caused by spatial localization of itinerant electrons at some of the Re atoms, which formally adopt a $5d^1$ electronic configuration. X-ray diffraction, IR- and ESR-studies, temperature dependent magnetization and specific heat measurements in various magnetic fields suggest that the electronic structure of poly-MTO can safely be approximated by a purely 2D conductor., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables

We report the frequency-dependent conductivity of the manganite system La1-xSrxMnO3 (x <= 0.2) when approaching the metal-insulator transition from the insulating side. Results from low-frequency dielectric measurements are combined with spectra in the infrared region. For low doping levels the behavior is dominated by hopping transport of localized charge carriers at low frequencies and by phononic and electronic excitations in the infrared region. For the higher Sr contents the approach of the metallic state is accompanied by the successive suppression of the hopping contribution at low frequencies and by the development of polaronic excitations in the infrared region, which finally become superimposed by a strong Drude contribution in the fully metallic state., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

CeNi$_{9}$Ge$_4$ exhibits unusual non-Fermi liquid behavior with the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat $\Delta C/T \cong 5.5$ JK$^{-2}$mol$^{-1}$ without showing any evidence of magnetic order. Specific heat measurements show that the logarithmic increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient flattens off below 200 mK. In marked contrast, the local susceptibility $\Delta\chi$ levels off well above 200 mK and already becomes constant below 1 K. Furthermore, the entropy reaches 2$R$ln2 below 20 K corresponding to a four level system. An analysis of $C$ and $\chi$ was performed in terms of an $SU(N=4)$ single impurity Anderson model with additional crystal electric field (CEF) splitting. Numerical renormalization group calculations point to a possible consistent description of the different low temperature scales in $\Delta c$ and $\Delta \chi$ stemming from the interplay of Kondo effect and crystal field splitting., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures

A detailed investigation of phonon excitations and charge carrier dynamics in single crystals of Fe_{1-x}Cu_{x}Cr_{2}S_{4} (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5) has been performed by using infrared spectroscopy. In FeCr_{2}S_{4} the phonon eigenmodes are strongly affected by the onset of magnetic order. Despite enhanced screening effects, a continuous evolution of the phonon excitations can be observed in the doped compounds with x = 0.2 (metallic) and x = 0.4, 0.5 (bad metals), but the effect of magnetic ordering on the phonons is strongly reduced compared to x = 0. The Drude-like charge-carrier contribution to the optical conductivity in the doped samples indicates that the colossal magneto-resistance effect results from the suppression of spin-disorder scattering., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Polymeric methyltrioxorhenium (poly-MTO) represents the first example of an inherent conducting organometallic oxide. It adopts the structural motives and transport properties of some classical perovskites in two dimensions. In this study we present resistivity data down to 30 mK which exhibit a crossover from a metallic (d$\rho$/d$T >$ 0) to an insulating (d$\rho$/d$T <$ 0) behavior at about 30 K. Below 30 K an unusual resistivity behavior, similar to that of some doped cuprate systems, is observed: initially the resistivity increases approximately as $\rho \sim$ log$(1/T$) before it starts to saturate below 2 K. Furthermore, a linear positive magnetoresistance is found (up to 7 T). In the colossal magnetoresistance manganites polarons have been proposed as the charge carrier state which localizes across the metal-insulator transition. The character of the polarons is still under debate. We present an assessment of measurements which identify polarons in the metallic state of La{2/3}Sr{1/3}MnO{3} (LSMO) and La{2/3}Ca{1/3}MnO{3} (LCMO) thin films. We focus on optical spectroscopy in these films which displays a pronounced resonance in the mid-infrared. The temperature dependent resonance has been previously assigned to polaron excitations. These polaronic resonances are qualitatively distinct in LSMO and LCMO and we discuss large and small polaron scenarios which have been proposed so far. There is evidence for a large polaron excitation in LSMO and small polarons in LCMO. These scenarios are examined with respect to further experimental probes, specifically charge carrier mobility (Hall-effect measurements) and high-temperature dc-resistivity., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

We present optical measurements of phononic excitations in La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) and La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films covering the full temperature range from the metallic ferromagnetic to the insulating paramagnetic phase. All eight phonons expected for the R$\bar{3}$c symmetry in LSMO and 17 out of the expected 25 phonons for the Pnma symmetry in LCMO have been determined. Close to the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition both compounds reveal an anomalous behavior but with different characteristics. Anomalies in the phononic spectra are a manifestation of the coupling of lattice degrees of freedom (DOF) to electronic DOF. Specifically, the low-frequency external group proves to be an indicator for lattice modifications induced by electronic correlations. The enhanced electron-phonon coupling in LCMO is responsible for Fano-like interference effects of distinct phonon modes with electronic continuum excitations: we observe asymmetric phonon line shapes, mode splitting and spectral weight transfer between modes., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

The analysis of phonon anomalies provides valuable information about the cooperative dynamics of lattice, spin and charge degrees of freedom. Significant is the anomalous temperature dependence of the external modes observed in La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) films. The two external modes merge close to the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition at $T_C$ and, moreover, two new modes evolve in this temperature range with strong resonances at slightly higher frequencies. We propose that this observed phonon metamorphosis probes the inhomogeneous Jahn-Teller distortion, manifest on the temperature scale $T_C$. The analysis is based on the first observation of all eight phonon modes in the metallic phase of LSMO and on susceptibility measurements which identify a Griffiths-like phase., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We present detailed optical measurements of the mid-infrared (MIR) excitations in thin films of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) and La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) across the magnetic transition. The shape of the excitation at about 0.2 eV in both samples is analyzed in terms of polaron models. We propose to identify the MIR resonance in LSMO as the excitation of large polarons and that in LCMO as a small polaron excitation. A scaling behavior for the low-energy side of the polaronic MIR resonance in LSMO is established.

We report on electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization, on heat capacity and optical experiments in single crystals of Sr_2Ru_(1-x)Ti_xO_4. Samples with x=0.1 and 0.2 reveal purely semiconducting resistivity behavior along c and the charge transport is close to localization within the ab-plane. A strong anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility appears at temperatures below 100 K. Moreover magnetic ordering in c-direction with a moment of order 0.01 mu_B/f.u. occurs at low temperatures. On doping the low-temperature linear term of the heat capacity becomes reduced significantly and probably is dominated by spin fluctuations. Finally, the optical conductivity reveals the anisotropic character of the dc resistance, with the in-plane conductance roughly following a Drude-type behavior and an insulating response along c.

Resistivity, optical, and angle-resolved photoemission experiments reveal unusual one-dimensional electronic properties of highly anisotropic SrNbO$_{3.41}$. Along the conducting chain direction we find an extremely small energy gap of only a few meV at the Fermi level. A discussion in terms of typical 1D instabilities (Peierls, Mott-Hubbard) shows that neither seems to provide a satisfactory explanation for the unique properties of SrNbO$_{3.41}$., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
