A fundamental question of extra-galactic astronomy that is yet to be fully understood, concerns the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR) and supermassive black hole (SMBH) activity with cosmic time, as well as their interplay and how it impacts galaxy evolution. A primary focus that could shed more light on these questions is the study of merging systems, comprising highly star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) at the earliest stages of galactic formation. However, it is essential to explore complementary selection methods across multiple wavelengths. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of a sample of high-redshift ($z>3$) far-infrared (far-IR) and radio-emitting galaxies in the highest possible spatial resolution. In order to select the galactic population of our interest, we selected galaxies that present relatively compact radio morphologies at 1.4 GHz as well as a far-IR spectrum that peaks in flux at $\lambda \geq 350 \, \mu m$. For these selection criteria, we used the COSMOS and ECDF-S fields, which provide high spectral and spatial resolution at a multi-wavelength scale. We derived a sample of eight galaxies that were identified either photometrically or spectroscopically at $z>3$ from literature studies and by our team. A thorough investigation of available optical, near-IR, and millimetre (mm) imaging reveals a possible merging scenario in five out of eight cases in our sample. Additionally, available multi-wavelength photometry strongly suggests active star formation at the $10^3 \, M_{\odot}/yr$ level in massive systems co-hosting an active SMBH. Comparison of these results with previous studies, suggests that our selection method preferentially identifies galaxies hosting an active SMBH, as well as a strong SFG component, resulting in high SFR and IR luminosity., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

The code FADO is the first publicly available population spectral synthesis tool that treats the contribution from ionised gas to the observed emission self-consistently. We study the impact of the nebular contribution on the determination of the star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, and consequent effect on the star-forming main sequence (SFMS) at low redshift. We applied FADO to the spectral database of the SDSS to derive the physical properties of galaxies. As a comparison, we used the data in the MPA-JHU catalogue, which contains the properties of SDSS galaxies derived without the nebular contribution. We selected a sample of SF galaxies with H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ flux measurements, and we corrected the fluxes for the nebular extinction through the Balmer decrement. We then calculated the H$\alpha$ luminosity to estimate the SFR. Then, by combining the stellar mass and SFR estimates from FADO and MPA-JHU, the SFMS was obtained. The H$\alpha$ flux estimates are similar between FADO and MPA-JHU. Because the H$\alpha$ flux was used as tracer of the SFR, FADO and MPA-JHU agree in their SFR. The stellar mass estimates are slightly higher for FADO than for MPA-JHU on average. However, considering the uncertainties, the differences are negligible. With similar SFR and stellar mass estimates, the derived SFMS is also similar between FADO and MPA-JHU. Our results show that for SDSS normal SF galaxies, the additional modelling of the nebular contribution does not affect the retrieved fluxes and consequentially also does not influence SFR estimators based on the extinction-corrected H$\alpha$ luminosity. For the stellar masses, the results point to the same conclusion. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are relevant sources of radiation that might have helped reionising the Universe during its early epochs. The super-massive black holes (SMBHs) they host helped accreting material and emitting large amounts of energy into the medium. Recent studies have shown that, for epochs earlier than $z~{\sim}~5$, the number density of SMBHs is on the order of few hundreds per square degree. Latest observations place this value below $300$ SMBHs at $z~{\gtrsim}~6$ for the full sky. To overcome this gap, it is necessary to detect large numbers of sources at the earliest epochs. Given the large areas needed to detect such quantities, using traditional redshift determination techniques -- spectroscopic and photometric redshift -- is no longer an efficient task. Machine Learning (ML) might help obtaining precise redshift for large samples in a fraction of the time used by other methods. We have developed and implemented an ML model which can predict redshift values for WISE-detected AGN in the HETDEX Spring Field. We obtained a median prediction error of $\sigma_{z}^{N} = 1.48 \times (z_{\mathrm{Predicted}} - z_{{\mathrm{True}}}) / (1 + z_{\mathrm{True}}) = 0.1162$ and an outlier fraction of $\eta = 11.58 \%$ at $(z_{\mathrm{Predicted}} - z_{{\mathrm{True}}}) / (1 + z_{\mathrm{True}}) > 0.15$, in line with previous applications of ML to AGN. Radio-emitting jets might be one of the main ingredients shaping the evolution of massive galaxies in the Universe since early cosmic times. However, identifying early radio active galactic nuclei (AGN) and confirming this scenario has been hard to accomplish, with studies of samples of radio AGN hosts at z>2 becoming routinely possible only recently. With the above in mind, we have carried out a survey with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA, or Morita Array) at 1.3 mm (rms=0.15 mJy) of 36 high-redshift radio AGN candidates found within 3.9deg2 in the ELAIS-S1 field. The work presented here describes the survey and showcases a preliminary set of results. The selection of the sample was based on three criteria making use of infrared (IR) and radio fluxes only. The criterion providing the highest selection rate of high-redshift sources (86% at z>0.8) is one combining an IR colour cut and radio flux cut (S(5.8um)/S(3.6um)>1.3 and S(1.4GHz)>1mJy). Among the sample of 36 sources, 16 show a millimetre (mm) detection. In eight of these cases, the emission has a non-thermal origin. A zsp=1.58 object, with a mm detection of non-thermal origin, shows a clear spatial offset between the jet-dominated mm continuum emission and that of the host's molecular gas, as traced by serendipitously detected CO(5-4) emission. Among the objects with serendipitous line detections there is a source with a narrow jet-like region, as revealed by CS(6-5) emission stretching 20kpc out of the host galaxy., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, accepted on MNRAS

The field of galaxy evolution will make a great leap forward in the next decade as a consequence of the huge effort by the scientific community in multi-object spectroscopic facilities. To maximise the impact of such incoming data, the analysis methods must also step up, extracting reliable information from the available spectra. In this paper, we aim to investigate the limits and the reliability of different spectral synthesis methods in the estimation of the mean stellar age and metallicity. The main question this work aims to address is which signal-to-noise ratios (S/N) are needed to reliably determine the mean stellar age and metallicity from a galaxy spectrum and how this depends on the tool used to model the spectra. To address this question we built a set of realistic simulated spectra containing stellar and nebular emission, reproducing the evolution of a galaxy in two limiting cases: a constant star formation rate and an exponentially declining star formation. We degraded the synthetic spectra built from these two star formation histories (SFHs) to different S/N and analysed them with three widely used spectral synthesis codes, namely FADO, STECKMAP, and STARLIGHT. For S/N < 5 all three tools show a large diversity in the results. The FADO and STARLIGHT tools find median differences in the light-weighted mean stellar age of ~0.1 dex, while STECKMAP shows a higher value of ~0.2 dex. Detailed investigations of the best-fit spectrum for galaxies with overestimated mass-weighted quantities point towards the inability of purely stellar models to fit the observed spectra around the Balmer jump. Our results imply that when a galaxy enters a phase of high specific star formation rate the neglect of the nebular continuum emission in the fitting process has a strong impact on the estimation of its SFH when purely stellar fitting codes are used, even in presence of high S/N spectra., Comment: New version matching the published one. 19 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Taking advantage of HST CANDELS data, we analyze the lowest redshift (z<0.5) massive galaxies in order to disentangle their structural constituents and study possible faint non-axis-symmetric features. Due to the excellent HST spatial resolution for intermediate-z objects, they are hard to model by purely automatic parametric fitting algorithms. We performed careful single and double S\'ersic fits to their galaxy surface brightness profiles. We also compare the model color profiles with the observed ones and also derive multi-component global effective radii attempting to obtain a better interpretation of the mass-size relation. Additionally, we test the robustness of our measured structural parameters via simulations. We find that the S\'ersic index does not offer a good proxy for the visual morphological type for our sample of massive galaxies. Our derived multi-component effective radii give a better description of the size of our sample galaxies than those inferred from single S\'ersic models with GALFIT. Our galaxy population lays on the scatter of the local mass-size relation, indicating that these massive galaxies do not experience a significant growth in size since z~0.5. Interestingly the few outliers are late-type galaxies, indicating that spheroids must reach the local mass-size relation earlier. For most of our sample galaxies, both single and multi-component S\'ersic models with GALFIT show substantial systematic deviations from the observed SBPs in the outskirts. These residuals may be partly due to several factors, namely a non-optimal data reduction for low surface brightness features, the existence of prominent stellar haloes for massive galaxies and could also arise from conceptual shortcomings of parametric 2D image decomposition tools. They consequently propagate into galaxy color profiles.

We present an exploration of the expected detection of the earliest Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in the Universe from state-of-art galaxy formation and evolution semi-analytic models and hydro-dynamical simulations. We estimate the number and radiative characteristics of Super Massive Black Holes (SMBHs) at $z\geq 6$, a redshift range that will be intensively explored by the next generation of telescopes, in particular in the radio through the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and at high energies with ESA's Athena X-ray Observatory. We find that Athena will be able to observe over 5000 AGN/$\rm deg^2$ at the Epoch of Re-ionization (EoR), $6\leq z \leq 10$. Similarly, for the same redshift range the models/simulations suggest that SKA will detect at least 400 AGN/$\rm deg^2$. Additionally, we stress the importance of the volume of the simulation box as well as the initial physical conditions of the models/simulations on their effect on the luminosity functions (LFs) and the creation of the most massive SMBHs that we currently observe at the EoR. Furthermore, following the evolution of the accretion mode of the SMBHs in each model/simulation, we show that, while the quasar dominates over the radio mode at the EoR, detection at radio wavelengths still reaches significant numbers even at the highest redshifts. Finally, we present the effect that the radiative efficiency has on the LFs by comparing results produced with a constant value for the radiative efficiency and more complex calculations based on the spin of each SMBH., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 17 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

We present ELDAR, a new method that exploits the potential of medium- and narrow-band filter surveys to securely identify active galactic nuclei (AGN) and determine their redshifts. Our methodology improves on traditional approaches by looking for AGN emission lines expected to be identified against the continuum, thanks to the width of the filters. To assess its performance, we apply ELDAR to the data of the ALHAMBRA survey, which covered an effective area of $2.38\,{\rm deg}^2$ with 20 contiguous medium-band optical filters down to F814W$\simeq 24.5$. Using two different configurations of ELDAR in which we require the detection of at least 2 and 3 emission lines, respectively, we extract two catalogues of type-I AGN. The first is composed of 585 sources ($79\,\%$ of them spectroscopically-unknown) down to F814W$=22.5$ at $z_{\rm phot}>1$, which corresponds to a surface density of $209\,{\rm deg}^{-2}$. In the second, the 494 selected sources ($83\,\%$ of them spectroscopically-unknown) reach F814W$=23$ at $z_{\rm phot}>1.5$, for a corresponding number density of $176\,{\rm deg}^{-2}$. Then, using samples of spectroscopically-known AGN in the ALHAMBRA fields, for the two catalogues we estimate a completeness of $73\,\%$ and $67\,\%$, and a redshift precision of $1.01\,\%$ and $0.86\,\%$ (with outliers fractions of $8.1\,\%$ and $5.8\,\%$). At $z>2$, where our selection performs best, we reach $85\,\%$ and $77\,\%$ completeness and we find no contamination from galaxies., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures, submitted to MNRAS
