The intercalation of molecular species between the layers of van der Waals (vdW) materials has recently emerged as a powerful approach to combine the remarkable electronic and magnetic properties of vdW materials with the chemical flexibility of organic molecules. However, the full transformative potential of molecular intercalation remains underexplored, largely due to the lack of simple, broadly applicable methods that preserve high crystalline quality down to the few-layer limit. Here, we introduce a simple galvanic approach to intercalate different molecules into various vdW materials under ambient conditions, leveraging the low reduction potential of selected metals to enable a spontaneous molecular insertion. We employ our method, which is particularly well-suited for the in-situ intercalation of few-layer-thick crystals, to intercalate nine vdW materials, including magnets and superconductors, with molecules ranging from conventional alkylammonium ions to metallorganic and bio-inspired chiral cations. Notably, intercalation leads to a molecule-dependent enhancement of the superconducting transition in 2H-TaS2, reaching a critical temperature of 4.7 K, higher than TaS2 monolayers. Additionally, RuCl3 exhibits an unprecedented transition from antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic ordering upon intercalation with cobaltocenium. These results establish our approach as a versatile technique for engineering atomically thin quantum materials and heterostructures, unlocking the transformative effects of molecular intercalation.

The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) offers a promising avenue to surpass the efficiency limitations of current solar cell technology. However, disentangling intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to photocurrent remains a significant challenge. Here, we fabricate high-quality, lateral devices based on atomically thin ReS2 with minimal contact resistance, providing an optimal platform for distinguishing intrinsic bulk photovoltaic signals from other extrinsic photocurrent contributions originating from interfacial effects. Our devices exhibit large bulk photovoltaic performance with intrinsic responsivities of 1 mA/W in the visible range, without the need for external tuning knobs such as strain engineering. Our experimental findings are supported by theoretical calculations. Furthermore, our approach can be extrapolated to investigate the intrinsic BPVE in other non-centrosymmetric van der Waals materials, paving the way for a new generation of efficient light-harvesting devices.

Spintronic devices require materials that facilitate effective spin transport, generation, and detection. In this regard, graphene emerges as an ideal candidate for long-distance spin transport owing to its minimal spin-orbit coupling, which, however, limits its capacity for effective spin manipulation. This problem can be overcome by putting spin-orbit coupling materials in close contact to graphene leading to spin-orbit proximity and, consequently, efficient spin-to-charge conversion through mechanisms such as the spin Hall effect. Here, we report and quantify the gate-dependent spin Hall effect in trilayer graphene proximitized with tin sulfide (SnS), a group-IV monochalcogenide which has recently been predicted to be a viable alternative to transition-metal dichalcogenides for inducing strong spin-orbit coupling in graphene. The spin Hall angle exhibits a maximum around the charge neutrality point of graphene up to room temperature. Pristine graphene is potentially an ideal medium to transport spin information. Proximity effects, where a neighbouring material is used to alter the properties of a material in adjacent (or proximitized) regions, can also be used in graphene to generate and detect spins by acquiring spin-orbit coupling or magnetic exchange coupling. However, the development of seamless spintronic devices that are based uniquely on proximity effects remains challenging. Here, we report a two-dimensional graphene spin valve that is enabled by proximity to the van der Waals magnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. Spin precession measurements show that graphene acquires both spin-orbit coupling and magnetic exchange coupling when interfaced with the Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. This leads to spin generation by both electrical spin injection and the spin Hall effect, while retaining long-distance spin transport. Non-linear transport effects in response to external magnetic fields, i.e. electrical magnetochiral anisotropy (eMChA), have attracted much attention for their importance to study quantum and spin-related phenomena. Indeed, they have permitted the exploration of topological surface states and charge-to-spin conversion processes in low-symmetry systems. Nevertheless, despite the inherent correlation between the symmetry of the material under examination and its non-linear transport characteristics, there is a lack of experimental demonstration to delve into this relationship and to unveil their microscopic mechanisms. Here, we study eMChA in chiral elemental Tellurium (Te) along different crystallographic directions, establishing the connection between the different eMChA components and the crystal symmetry of Te. We observed different longitudinal eMChA components with collinear current and magnetic field, demonstrating experimentally the radial angular momentum texture of Te. We also measured a transverse non-linear resistance which, as the longitudinal counterpart, scales bilinearly with current and magnetic fields, illustrating that they are different manifestations of the same effect. Finally, we study the scaling law of the eMChA, evidencing that extrinsic scattering from dynamic sources is the dominant microscopic mechanism. PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Strain is an effective strategy to modulate the optoelectronic properties of 2D materials, but it has been almost unexplored in layered hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites (HOIPs) due to their complex band structure and mechanical properties. Here, we investigate the temperature-dependent microphotoluminescence (PL) of 2D $(C_6H_5CH_2CH_2NH_3)_2Cs_3Pb_4Br_{13}$ HOIP subject to biaxial strain induced by a $SiO_2$ ring platform on which flakes are placed by viscoelastic stamping. At 80 K, we found that a strain of <1% can change the PL emission from a single peak (unstrained) to three well-resolved peaks. Supported by micro-Raman spectroscopy, we show that the thermomechanically generated strain modulates the bandgap due to changes in the octahedral tilting and lattice expansion. Mechanical simulations demonstrate the coexistence of tensile and compressive strain along the flake. The observed PL peaks add an interesting feature to the rich phenomenology of photoluminescence in 2D HOIPs, which can be exploited in tailored sensing and optoelectronic devices., Comment: 4 figures

Understanding the structural and magnetic properties in layered hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites (HOIPs) is key for their design and integration in spin-electronic devices. Here, we have conducted a systematic study on ten compounds to understand the effect of the transition metal (Cu$^{2+}$, Mn$^{2+}$, Co$^{2+}$), organic spacer (alkyl- and aryl-ammonium) and perovskite phase (Ruddlesden-Popper and Dion-Jacobson) on the properties of these materials. Temperature-dependent Raman measurements show that the crystals' structural phase transitions are triggered by the motional freedom of the organic cations as well as by the flexibility of the inorganic metal-halide lattice. In the case of Cu$^{2+}$ HOIPs, an increase of the in-plane anisotropy and a reduction of the octahedra interlayer distance is found to change the behavior of the HOIP from that of a 2D ferromagnet to that of a quasi-3D antiferromagnet. Mn$^{2+}$ HOIPs show inherent antiferromagnetic octahedra intralayer interactions and a phenomenologically rich magnetism, presenting spin-canting, spin-flop transitions and metamagnetism controlled by the crystal anisotropy. Co$^{2+}$ crystals with non-linked tetrahedra show a dominant paramagnetic behavior irrespective of the organic spacer and the perovskite phase. When doped into a certain range of charge carrier concentrations, MoS2 departs from its pristine semiconducting character to become a strongly correlated material characterized by exotic phenomena such as charge density waves or superconductivity. However, the required doping levels are typically achieved using ionic-liquid gating or air-sensitive alkali-ion intercalation, which are not compatible with standard device fabrication processes. Here, we report on the emergence of superconductivity and a charge density wave phase in air-stable organic cation intercalated MoS2 crystals. By selecting two different molecular guests, we show that these correlated electronic phases depend dramatically on the intercalated cation, demonstrating the potential of organic ion intercalation to finely tune the properties of 2D materials. Moreover, we find that a fully developed zero-resistance state is not reached in few-nm-thick flakes, indicating the presence of three-dimensional superconductive paths which are severed by the mechanical exfoliation. We ascribe this behavior to an inhomogeneous charge carrier distribution, which we probe at the nanoscale using scanning near-field optical microscopy. Our results establish organic-ion intercalated MoS2 as a platform to study the emergence and modulation of correlated electronic phases.

A charge density wave (CDW) represents an exotic state in which electrons are arranged in a long range ordered pattern in low-dimensional materials. Although our understanding of the fundamental character of CDW has been enriched after extensive studies, its relationship with functional phenomena remains relatively limited. Here, we show an unprecedented demonstration of a tunable charge-spin interconversion (CSI) in graphene/1T-TaS$_2$ van der Waals heterostructures by manipulating the distinct CDW phases in 1T-TaS$_2$. Whereas CSI from spins polarized in all three directions are observed in the heterostructure when the CDW phase does not show commensurability, the output of one of the components disappears and the other two are enhanced when the CDW phase becomes commensurate. The experimental observation is supported by first-principles calculations, which evidence that chiral CDW multidomains are at the origin of the switching of CSI. Angle-twisting engineering has emerged as a powerful tool for modulating electronic properties in van der Waals heterostructures. Recent theoretical works have predicted the modulation of spin texture in graphene-based heterostructures by twist angle, although an experimental verification is missing. Here, we demonstrate the tunability of the spin texture and associated spin-charge interconversion with twist angle in WSe$_2$/graphene heterostructures by using spin precession experiments. For specific twist angles, we experimentally detect a spin component radial with the electron's momentum, in addition to the standard orthogonal component. Our results show that the helicity of the spin texture can be reversed by angle twisting, highlighting its critical role on the spin-orbit properties of WSe$_2$/graphene heterostructures and paving the way for the development of novel spin-twistronic devices., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures and Supplementary Information

Electrical transport in non-centrosymmetric materials departs from the well-established phenomenological Ohm's law. Instead of a linear relation between current and electric field, a non-linear conductivity emerges along specific crystallographic directions. This non-linear transport is fundamentally related to the lack of spatial inversion symmetry. However, the experimental implications of an inversion symmetry operation on the non-linear conductivity remain to be explored. Here, we report on a large, non-linear conductivity in chiral Tellurium. By measuring samples with opposite handedness, we demonstrate that the non-linear transport is odd under spatial inversion. Furthermore, by applying an electrostatic gate, we modulate the non-linear output by a factor of 300, reaching the highest reported value excluding engineered heterostructures. Graphene is a light material for long-distance spin transport due to its low spin-orbit coupling, which at the same time is the main drawback to exhibit a sizeable spin Hall effect. Decoration by light atoms has been predicted to enhance the spin Hall angle in graphene while retaining a long spin diffusion length. Here, we combine a light metal oxide (oxidized Cu) with graphene to induce the spin Hall effect. Its efficiency, given by the product of the spin Hall angle and the spin diffusion length, can be tuned with the Fermi level position, exhibiting a maximum (1.8 $\pm$ 0.6 nm at 100 K) around the charge neutrality point. This all-light-element heterostructure shows a larger efficiency than conventional spin Hall materials. The gate-tunable spin Hall effect is observed up to room temperature. The exfoliation of layered magnetic materials generates atomically thin flakes characterized by an ultrahigh surface sensitivity, which makes their magnetic properties tunable via external stimuli, such as electrostatic gating and proximity effects. Another powerful approach to tailor magnetic materials is molecular functionalization, which leads to hybrid interface states with peculiar magnetic properties, called spinterfaces. However, spinterface effects have not yet been explored on layered magnetic materials. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of spinterface effects at the interface between flakes of the prototypical layered magnetic metal Fe3GeTe2 and thin films of paramagnetic Co-phthalocyanine. Magnetotransport measurements show that the molecular layer induces a magnetic exchange bias in Fe3GeTe2, indicating that the unpaired spins in Co-phthalocyanine develop antiferromagnetic ordering by proximity and pin the magnetization reversal of Fe3GeTe2. The effect is strongest for a Fe3GeTe2 thickness of 20 nm, for which the exchange bias field reaches -840 Oe and is measurable up to approximately 110 K. This value compares very favorably with previous exchange bias fields reported for Fe3GeTe2 in all-inorganic van der Waals heterostructures, demonstrating the potential of molecular functionalization to tailor the magnetism of van der Waals layered materials.

This thesis develops recent work on the so called Volume-Complexity and Action-Complexity conjectures. According to this family of proposals, geometric quantities can be defined in some holographic gravitational theories that can be mapped with the concept of quantum complexity for states in a dual quantum-mechanical theory. In this work, we review the original motivations for the use of quantum-information theory in the search of a theory of quantum gravity, and argue in favour of holographic complexity as a promising new tool that could play a key role in the elucidation of the properties of black holes. After this introduction, we devote some time to the study of `exotic' thermodynamical systems of diverse origin, confronting the conjectures with expectations and seeking for new behaviours of holographic complexity that could help us understand or refine the existing proposals. Next, we turn our attention to the study of holographic complexity for singular spacetimes, defining slightly modified versions of the conjecture that are well adapted to singularities and searching for universal behaviours of complexity dynamics within these setups. Finally, we finish with some speculations about the relation between holographic complexity and older characterization criteria for singularities in general relativity., Comment: 151 pages, Ph. A detailed correlative structural, magnetic and chemical analysis of non-stoichiometric cobalt ferrite micrometric crystals was performed by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism combined with photoemission microscopy, low energy electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The vector magnetization at the nanoscale is obtained from magnetic images at different x-ray incidence angles and compared with micromagnetic simulations, revealing the presence of defects which pin the magnetic domain walls. A comparison of different types of defects and the domain walls location suggests that the main source of pinning in these microcrystals are linear structural defects induced in the spinel by the substrate steps underneath the islands., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Chiral materials are the ideal playground for exploring the relation between symmetry, relativistic effects, and electronic transport. For instance, chiral organic molecules have been intensively studied to electrically generate spin-polarized currents in the last decade, but their poor electronic conductivity limits their potential for applications. Conversely, chiral inorganic materials such as Tellurium are excellent electrical transport materials, but have not been explored to enable the electrical control of spin polarization in devices. Here, we demonstrate the all-electrical generation, manipulation, and detection of spin polarization in chiral single-crystalline Tellurium nanowires. By recording a large (up to 7%) and chirality-dependent unidirectional magnetoresistance, we show that the orientation of the electrically generated spin polarization is determined by the nanowire handedness and uniquely follows the current direction, while its magnitude can be manipulated by an electrostatic gate. Our results pave the way for the development of magnet-free chirality-based spintronic devices.

The development of high-power density vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) with high energy efficiencies (EEs) is crucial for the widespread dissemination of this energy storage technology. In this work, we report the production of novel hierarchical carbonaceous nanomaterials for VRFB electrodes with high catalytic activity toward the vanadium redox reactions (VO2+/VO2+ and V2+/V3+). The electrode materials are produced through a rapid (minute timescale) low-pressure combined gas plasma treatment of graphite felts (GFs) in an inductively coupled radio frequency reactor. By systematically studying the effects of either pure gases (O2 and N2) or their combination at different gas plasma pressures, the electrodes are optimized to reduce their kinetic polarization for the VRFB redox reactions. To further enhance the catalytic surface area of the electrodes, single-/few-layer graphene, produced by highly scalable wet-jet milling exfoliation of graphite, is incorporated into the GFs through an infiltration method in the presence of a polymeric binder. Depending on the thickness of the proton-exchange membrane (Nafion 115 or Nafion XL), our optimized VRFB configurations can efficiently operate within a wide range of charge/discharge current densities, exhibiting energy efficiencies up to 93.9%, 90.8%, 88.3%, 85.6%, 77.6%, and 69.5% at 25, 50, 75, 100, 200, and 300 mA cm-2, respectively. Our technology is cost-competitive when compared to commercial ones (additional electrode costs < 100 euro m-2) and shows EEs rivalling the record-high values reported for efficient systems to date. Our work remarks on the importance to study modified plasma conditions or plasma methods alternative to those reported previously (e.g., atmospheric plasmas) to improve further the electrode performances of the current VRFB systems.

Holographic complexity, in the guise of the Complexity = Volume prescription, comes equipped with a natural correspondence between its rate of growth and the average infall momentum of matter in the bulk. This Momentum/Complexity correspondence can be related to an integrated version of the momentum constraint of general relativity. In this paper we propose a generalization, using the full Codazzi equations as a starting point, which successfully accounts for purely gravitational contributions to infall momentum. The proposed formula is explicitly checked in an exact pp-wave solution of the vacuum Einstein equations.

Advancements in electrochemical double-layer capacitor (EDLC) technology require the concomitant use of novel efficient electrode materials and viable electrode manufacturing methods. Cost-effectiveness, scalability and sustainability are key-drivers for fulfilling product development chain accepted by worldwide legislations. Herein, we report a scalable and sprayable "green" electrode material-based ink based on activated carbon and single-/few-layer graphene (SLG/FLG) flakes. We show that, contrary to commercial reduced graphene oxide, defect-free and flat SLG/FLG flakes reduce the friction of ions over the electrode films, while spray coating deposition of our ink maximises the electrolyte accessibility to the electrode surface area. Sprayed SLG/FLG flakes-based EDLCs display superior rate capability performance (e.g., specific energies of 31.5, 23.7 and 12.5 Wh kg-1 at specific powers of 150, 7500 and 30000 W kg-1, respectively) compared to both SLG/FLG flakes-free devices and commercial-like EDLCs produced by slurry-coating method. The use of SLG/FLG flakes enables our sprayed EDLCs to operate in a wide range of temperature (-40/+100{\deg}C) compatible with ionic liquid/organic solvent-based electrolytes, overcoming the specific power limits of AC-based EDLCs. A prototype EDLCs stack consisting of multiple large-area EDLCs, each one displaying a capacitance of 25 F, demonstrates the industrial potential of our technology.

We show that the holographic Complexity = Volume proposal satisfies a very general notion of Momentum/Complexity correspondence (PC), based on the Momentum Constraint of General Relativity. It relates the rate of complexity variation with an appropriate matter momentum flux through spacelike extremal surfaces. This formalizes the intuitive idea that `gravitational clumpling' of matter increases complexity, and the required notion of `infall momentum' is shown to have a Newtonian avatar which expresses this idea. The proposed form of the PC correspondence is found to be exact for any solution of Einstein's equations in 2+1 dimensions, and any spherically symmetric solution in arbitrary dimensions, generalizing all previous calculations using spherical thin shells. Gravitational radiation enters through a correction which does not have a straightforward interpretation as a PC correspondence. Resistive switching memories allow electrical control of the conductivity of a material, by inducing a high resistance (OFF) or a low resistance (ON) state, using electrochemical and ion transport processes. As alternative to high temperature and vacuum-based physical sulphurization methods of silver (Ag), here we propose, as resistive switching medium, a layer built from colloidal Ag$_{2-x}$S nanocrystals -compatible with solution-processed approaches. The effect of the electrode size (from macro- to micro-scale), composition (Ag, Ti and Pt) and geometry on the device performance together with the electrochemical mechanisms involved are evaluated. We achieved an optimized Ag/Ti bowtie proof-of-concept configuration by e-beam lithography, which fulfils the general requirements for ReRAM devices in terms of low power consumption and reliable $I_{ON}/I_{OFF}$ ratio. This configuration demonstrates reproducible switching between ON and OFF states with data endurance of at least 20 cycles; and an $I_{ON}/I_{OFF}$ ratio up to 10$^3$ at low power consumption (0.1V readout), which outperforms previous results in literature for devices with resistive layers fabricated from silver chalcogenide nanoparticles.

The interaction between excitons and phonons in semiconductor nanocrystals plays a crucial role in the exciton energy spectrum and dynamics, and thus in their optical properties. We investigate the exciton2 phonon coupling in giant-shell CdSe/CdS core-shell nanocrystals via resonant Raman spectroscopy. The Huang-Rhys parameter is evaluated by the intensity ratio of the longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon of CdS with its first multiscattering (2LO) replica. We used four different excitation wavelengths in the range from the onset of the CdS shell absorption to well above the CdS shell band edge to get insight into resonance effects of the CdS LO phonon with high energy excitonic transitions. The isotropic spherical giant-shell nanocrystals show consistently stronger exciton-phonon coupling as compared to the anisotropic rod-shaped dot-in-rod (DiR) architecture, and the 2LO/LO intensity ratio decreases for excitation wavelengths approaching the CdS band edge. The strong exciton-phonon coupling in the spherical giant-shell nanocrystals can be related to the delocalization of the electronic wave functions. Furthermore, we observe the radial breathing modes of the GS nanocrystals and their overtones by ultralow frequency Raman spectroscopy with nonresonant excitation, using laser energies well below the band gap of the heteronanocrystals, and highlight the differences between higher order, Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Gallium selenide (GaSe) is a layered compound, which has been exploited in nonlinear optical applications and photodetectors due to its anisotropic structure and pseudo-direct optical gap. Theoretical studies predicted that its two-dimensional (2D) form is a potential photocatalyst for water splitting reactions. Herein, we first report the photoelectrochemical (PEC) characterization of GaSe nanoflakes (single-/few-layer flakes), produced via liquid phase exfoliation, for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in both acidic and alkaline media. In 0.5 M H2SO4, the GaSe photoelectrodes display the best PEC performance, i.e. a ratiometric power-saved metric for HER ({\Phi}saved,HER) of 0.09% and a ratiometric power-saved metric for OER ({\Phi}saved,OER) of 0.25%. When used as PEC-type photodetectors, GaSe photoelectrodes show a responsivity of ~0.16 A W-1 upon 455 nm illumination at light intensity of 63.5 uW cm-2 and applied potential of -0.3 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The stability analysis of the GaSe photodetectors evidences a durable operation over tens of cathodic linear sweep voltammetry scans in 0.5 M H2SO4 for HER. Viceversa, degradation effects have been observed in both alkaline and anodic operation due to highly oxidizing environment and O2-induced (photo-)oxidation effects. Our results provide new insight into PEC properties of GaSe nanoflakes for their exploitation in photoelectrocatalysis, PEC-type photodetectors and (bio)sensors.

Plasmonic metasurfaces have spawned the field of flat optics using nanostructured planar metallic or dielectric surfaces that can replace bulky optical elements and enhance the capabilities of traditional far-field optics. Furthermore, the potential of flat optics can go far beyond far-field modulation, and can be exploited for functionality in the near-field itself. Here, we design metasurfaces based on aperiodic arrays of plasmonic Au nanostructures for tailoring the optical near-field in the visible and near-infrared spectral range. The basic element of the arrays is a rhomboid that is modulated in size, orientation and position to achieve the desired functionality of the micron-size metasurface structure. Using two-photon-photoluminescence as a tool to probethe near-field profiles in the plane of the metasurfaces, we demonstrate the molding of light into different near-field intensity patterns and active pattern control via the far-field illumination. Finite element method simulations reveal that the near-field modulation occurs via a combination of the plasmonic resonances of the rhomboids and field enhancement in the nanoscale gaps in between the elements. This approach enables optical elements that can switch the near-field distribution across the metasurface via wavelength and polarization of the incident far-field light, and provides pathways for light matter interaction in integrated devices., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

Directing and polarizing the emission of a fluorophore is of fundamental importance in the perspective of novel photonic sources based on emerging nano-emitter technologies. These two tasks are usually accomplished by a sophisticated and demanding structuring of the optical environment in which the emitter is immersed, or by non-trivial chemical engineering of its geometry and/or band structure. In this paper, the wavelength and polarization selective spontaneous emission from a dye-embedded in a Metal/Insulator/Metal (d-MIM) nanocavity is demonstrated. A push-pull chromophore with large Stokes shift is embedded in a MIM cavity whose resonances are tuned with the spectral emission band of the chromophore. Angular and polarization resolved spectroscopy experiments reveal that the radiated field is reshaped according to the angular dispersion of the nanocavity, and that its spectrum manifests two bands with different polarization corresponding to the p- and s-polarized resonances of the cavity. The d-MIM cavities are a highly versatile system for polarization and wavelength division multiplexing applications at the nanoscale, as well as for near-field focused emission and nanolenses., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

The photoluminescence (PL), color purity, and stability of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals depend critically on the surface passivation. We present a study on the temperature dependent PL and PL decay dynamics of lead bromide perovskite nanocrystals characterized by different types of A cations, surface ligands, and nanocrystal sizes. Throughout, we observe a single emission peak from cryogenic to ambient temperature. The PL decay dynamics are dominated by the surface passivation, and a post-synthesis ligand exchange with a quaternary ammonium bromide (QAB) results in a more stable passivation over a larger temperature range. The PL intensity is highest from 50K-250K, which indicates that the ligand binding competes with the thermal energy at ambient temperature. Despite the favorable PL dynamics of nanocrystals passivated with QAB ligands (monoexponential PL decay over a large temperature range, increased PL intensity and stability), the surface passivation still needs improvement toward increased emission intensity in nanocrystal films., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Colloidal core/shell nanocrystals are key materials for optoelectronics, enabling control over essential properties via precise engineering of the shape, thickness, and crystal lattice structure of their shell. Here, we apply the growth protocol for CdS branched nanocrystals on CdSe nanoplatelet seeds and obtain bone-shaped heterostructures with a highly anisotropic shell. Surprisingly, the nanoplatelets withstand the high growth temperature of 350 {\deg}C and we obtain structures with a CdSe nanoplatelet core that is overcoated by a shell of cubic CdS, on top of which tetrahedral CdS structures with hexagonal lattice are formed. These complex core/shell nanocrystals show a bandedge emission around 657 nm with a photoluminescence quantum yield of ca. 42 % in solution, which is also retained in thin films. Interestingly, the nanocrystals manifest simultaneous red and green emission, and the relatively long wavelength of the green emission indicates charge recombination at the cubic/hexagonal interface of the CdS shell. The nanocrystal films show amplified spontaneous emission, random lasing, and distributed feedback lasing when the material is deposited on suitable gratings. The fabrication of electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) with high areal capacitance relies on the use of elevated mass loadings of highly porous active materials. Herein, we demonstrate a high-throughput manufacturing of graphene/nanotubes hybrid EDLCs. Wet-jet milling (WJM) method is exploited to exfoliate the graphite into single/few-layer graphene flakes (WJM-G) in industrial volume (production rate ~0.5 kg/day). Commercial single/double walled carbon nanotubes (SDWCNTs) are mixed with graphene flakes in order to act as spacers between the graphene flakes during their film formation. The latter is obtained by one-step vacuum filtration, resulting in self-standing, metal- and binder-free flexible EDLC electrodes with high active material mass loadings up to 30 mg cm-2. The corresponding symmetric WJM-G/SDWCNTs EDLCs exhibit electrode energy densities of 539 uWh cm-2 at 1.3 mW cm-2 and operating power densities up to 532 mW cm-2 (outperforming most of the EDLC technologies). The EDCLs show excellent cycling stability and outstanding flexibility even under highly folded states (up to 180 degrees). The combination of industrial-like production of active materials, simplified manufacturing of EDLC electrodes, and ultrahigh areal performance of the as-produced EDLCs are promising for novel advanced EDLC designs.

Among the large family of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), recently ReS2 has stood out due to its nearly layer-independent optoelectronic and physicochemical properties. These are related to its 1T distorted octahedral structure, which leads to strong in-plane anisotropy and the presence of active sites at its surface, which makes ReS2 interesting for applications such as gas sensors and catalysts for H2 production. However, the current fabrication methods for ReS2 use chemical or physical vapor deposition (CVD or PVD) processes that are costly and involve complex and lengthy fabrication procedures, therefore limiting their large-scale production and exploitation. To address this issue, we developed a colloidal synthesis approach, which allows the production of ReS2 to be attained at temperatures below 360 Celsius degrees and with reaction times < 2 h, resulting in a more cost-efficient strategy than the CVD and PVD methods. By combining the solution-based synthesis with surface functionalization strategies, we demonstrate the feasibility of colloidal ReS2 nanosheet films for gas sensing of different toxic gases, moisture and other volatile compounds with highly competitive performance in comparison with devices built with CVD-grown ReS2 and MoS2. In addition, the integration of the ReS2 nanosheet films in assemblies, in which they are deposited on top of networks of carbon nanotubes, allowed us to fabricate electrodes for electrocatalysis for H2 production in both acid and alkaline conditions. Results from proof-of-principle devices show an electrocatalytic overpotential that is competitive with devices based on ReS2 produced by CVD, and even with MoS2, WS2 and MoSe2 electrocatalysts.

The design of efficient electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting with minimal amount of precious metal is crucial to attain renewable and sustainable energy conversion. Here, we report the use of a network of CdSe branched colloidal nanocrystals, made of a CdSe core and eight CdSe pods (so-called octapods), able to host on their pods Pt particles, and thus catalyzing water splitting reactions. Thanks to the octapod shape, the resulting Pt-hosting network is mechanically trapped onto carbon nanotube buckypaper, providing mechanically flexible and binder-free electrodes. We found that such hierarchical configuration maximizes the mass activity and the utilization efficiency of Pt for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). At a potential of -0.15 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, the Pt/octapod network-based electrodes display a Pt mass activity on the HER of 166 A mg-1 and 42 A mg-1 in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. These values correspond to turnover frequencies of 168 s-1 and 42 s-1, respectively, which are in that order 14 and 21 times higher compared to commercially available Pt/C benchmarks. The strong chemical and mechanical interactions between the Pt and the octapod surface, along with pod-aided adhesion of the Pt/octapod network to the buckypaper, result in a long-term durability (>20 h) of the HER-activity in both media. These results experimentally prove that the exploitation of our network of branched nanocrystals hosting Pt particles can circumvent the durability issues of the catalysts while adopting either ultralow Pt loadings or benchmarking carbon-supported Pt nanocrystals. Our work opens up prospects for using porous networks made by branched nanocrystals as catalysts with ultralow amount of noble metals and controlled catalytic properties.

The design of efficient and cost-effective catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the key for molecular hydrogen (H2) production from electrochemical water splitting. Transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2), most notably group-6 MX2 (e.g., MoS2 and WS2), are appealing catalysts for the HER alternative to the best, but highly expensive, Pt-group elements. However, their HER activity is typically restricted to their edge sites rather than their basal plane. Furthermore, their semiconducting properties hinder an efficient electron transfer to the catalytic sites, which impedes a high rate of H2 production. Herein, we exploit liquid-phase exfoliation-produced metallic (1H, 2H and 3R) NbS2 nanoflakes, belonging to the class of metallic layered group-5 MX2, to overcome the abovementioned limitations. Both chemical treatment with hygroscopic Li salt and electrochemical in operando self-nanostructuring are exploited to improve the NbS2 nanoflake HER activity. The combination of NbS2 with other MX2, in our case MoSe2, also provides heterogeneous catalysts accelerating the HER kinetics of the individual counterparts. The designed NbS2-based catalysts exhibit an overpotential at a cathodic current of 10 mA cm-2 (n10) as low as 0.10 and 0.22 V vs. RHE in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M KOH, respectively. In 0.5 M H2SO4, the HER activity of the NbS2-based catalysts is also superior to those of the Pt/C benchmark at current densities higher than 80 mA cm-2. Our work provides general guidelines for a scalable and cost-effective exploitation of NbS2, as well as the entire MX2 portfolio, for attaining a viable H2 production through electrochemical routes.

We establish a version of the Momentum/Complexity (PC) duality between the rate of operator complexity growth and a radial component of bulk momentum for a test system falling into a black hole. In systems of finite entropy, our map remains valid for arbitrarily late times after scrambling. The asymptotic regime of linear complexity growth is associated to a frozen momentum in the interior of the black hole, measured with respect to a time foliation by extremal codimension-one surfaces which saturate without reaching the singularity. The detailed analysis in this paper uses the Volume-Complexity (VC) prescription and an infalling system consisting of a thin shell of dust, but the final PC duality formula should have a much wider degree of generality., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures

We study the relation between entropy and Action Complexity (AC) for various examples of cosmological singularities in General Relativity. The complexity is defined with respect to the causal domain of dependence of the singular set, and the entropy is evaluated on the boundary of the same causal domain. We find that, contrary to the situation for black hole singularities, the complexity growth near the singularity is controlled by the dynamics of the entropy $S$, with a characteristic linear relation. This formula is found to apply to singularities with vanishing entropy as well as those with diverging entropy. In obtaining these results it is crucial to take into account the AC expansion counterterm, whose associated length scale must be chosen sufficiently large in order to ensure the expected monotonicity properties of the complexity., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures. The miniaturization of energy storage units is pivotal for the development of next-generation portable electronic devices. Micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) hold a great potential to work as on-chip micro-power sources and energy storage units complementing batteries and energy harvester systems. The scalable production of supercapacitor materials with cost-effective and high-throughput processing methods is crucial for the widespread application of MSCs. Here, we report wet-jet milling exfoliation of graphite to scale-up the production of graphene as supercapacitor material. The formulation of aqueous/alcohol-based graphene inks allows metal-free, flexible MSCs to be screen-printed. These MSCs exhibit areal capacitance (Careal) values up to 1.324 mF cm-2 (5.296 mF cm-2 for a single electrode), corresponding to an outstanding volumetric capacitance (Cvol) of 0.490 F cm-3 (1.961 F cm-3 for a single electrode). The screen-printed MSCs can operate up to power density above 20 mW cm-2 at energy density of 0.064 uWh cm-2. The devices exhibit excellent cycling stability over charge-discharge cycling (10000 cycles), bending cycling (100 cycles at bending radius of 1 cm) and folding (up to angles of 180{\deg}). Moreover, ethylene vinyl acetate-encapsulated MSCs retain their electrochemical properties after a home-laundry cycle, providing waterproof and washable properties for prospective application in wearable electronics.

Interface engineering of organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) plays a pivotal role in achieving high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Graphene and related two-dimensional materials (GRMs) are promising candidates to tune on demand the interface properties of PSCs. In this work, we fully exploit the potential of GRMs by controlling the optoelectronic properties of hybrids between molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as hole transport layer (HTL) and active buffer layer (ABL) in mesoscopic methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) perovskite (MAPbI3)-based PSC. We show that zero-dimensional MoS2 quantum dots (MoS2 QDs), derived by liquid phase exfoliated MoS2 flakes, provide both hole-extraction and electron-blocking properties. In fact, on the one hand, intrinsic n-type doping-induced intra-band gap states effectively extract the holes through an electron injection mechanism. On the other hand, quantum confinement effects increase the optical band gap of MoS2 (from 1.4 eV for the flakes to > 3.2 for QDs), raising the minimum energy of its conduction band (from -4.3 eV for the flakes to -2.2 eV for QDs) above the one of conduction band of MAPbI3 (between -3.7 and -4 eV) and hindering electron collection. The van der Waals hybridization of MoS2 QDs with functionalized reduced graphene oxide (f-RGO), obtained by chemical silanization-induced linkage between RGO and (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane, is effective to homogenize the deposition of HTLs or ABLs onto the perovskite film, since the two-dimensional (2D) nature of RGO effectively plug the pinholes of the MoS2 QDs films. Our graphene interface engineering (GIE) strategy based on van der Waals MoS2 QD/graphene hybrids enable MAPbI3-based PSCs to achieve PCE up to 20.12% (average PCE of 18.8%).

We introduce a quasilocal version of holographic complexity adapted to `terminal states' such as spacelike singularities. We use a modification of the action-complexity ansatz, restricted to the past domain of dependence of the terminal set, and study a number of examples whose symmetry permits explicit evaluation, to conclude that this quantity enjoys monotonicity properties after the addition of appropriate counterterms. A notion of `complexity density' can be defined for singularities by a coarse-graining procedure. This definition assigns finite complexity density to black hole singularities but vanishing complexity density to either generic FRW singularities or chaotic BKL singularities. We designed solution-processed, flexible hybrid graphene flake/2H-MoS2 quantum dot (QD) heterostructures, showing enhanced electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with respect to their native individual components. The 2H-MoS2 QDs are produced through a scalable, environmentally friendly, one-step solvothermal approach from two-dimensional (2D) 2H-MoS2 flakes obtained by liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) of their bulk counterpart in 2-Propanol. This QDs synthesis avoids the use of high boiling point and/or toxic solvents. Graphene flakes are produced by LPE of graphite in N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone. The electrochemical properties of 2H-MoS2 QDs and their HER-favorable chemical and electronic coupling with graphene enable to reach a current density of 10 mA/cm^2 at an overpotential of 136 mV, surpassing the performances of graphene flake/2H-MoS2 (1T-MoS2) flake heterostructures. Regio-regular poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (rr-P3HT), the work-horse of organic photovoltaics, has been recently exploited in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) configuration with phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) for solution-processed hydrogen-evolving photocathodes, reaching cathodic photocurrents at 0 V vs. RHE (J0V vs RHE) of up to 8 mA cm-2. The photoelectrochemical performance of these photocathodes strongly depends on the presence of the electron (ESL) and hole (HSL) selective layer. While TiO2 and its sub-stoichiometric phases are consolidated ESL materials, the currently used HSLs (e.g., MoO3, CuI, PEDOTT:PSS, WO3) suffer electrochemical degradation under hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)-working conditions. In this work, we use solution-processed graphene derivatives as HSL to boost efficiency and durability of rr-P3HT:PCBM-based photocathodes, demonstrating record-high performance. In fact, our devices show cathodic J0V vs RHE of 6.01 mA cm-2, onset potential (Vo) of 0.6 V vs. RHE, ratiometric power-saved efficiency ({\phi}saved) of 1.11% and operational activity of 20 hours in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. Moreover, the designed photocathodes are effectively working in different pH environments ranging from acid to basic. This is pivotal for their exploitation in tandem configurations, where photoanodes operate only in restricted electrochemical conditions. Furthermore, we demonstrate the scalability of our all-solution processed approach by fabricating a large-area (~9 cm2) photocathode on flexible substrate, achieving remarkable cathodic J0V vs RHE of 2.8 mA cm-2, Vo of 0.45 V vs. RHE and {\phi}saved of 0.31%. This is the first demonstration of high-efficient rr-P3HT:PCBM flexible photocathodes based on low-cost and solution-processed manufacturing techniques.

We introduce the notion of holographic non-computer as a system which exhibits parametrically large delays in the growth of complexity, as calculated within the Complexity-Action proposal. Some known examples of this behavior include extremal black holes and near-extremal hyperbolic black holes. Generic black holes in higher-dimensional gravity also show non-computing features. Within the $1/d$ expansion of General Relativity, we show that large-$d$ scalings which capture the qualitative features of complexity, such as a linear growth regime and a plateau at exponentially long times, also exhibit an initial computational delay proportional to $d$. We analyze and optimize a wireless system with energy transfer in the downlink and information transfer in the uplink, under quasi-static Nakagami-m fading. We consider ultra-reliable communication scenarios representative of the fifth-generation of wireless systems, with strict error and latency requirements. The error probability and delay are investigated, and an approximation for the former is given and validated through simulations. We consider a dual-hop wireless network where an energy constrained relay node first harvests energy through the received radio-frequency signal from the source, and then uses the harvested energy to forward the source's information to the destination node. The throughput and delay metrics are investigated for a decode-and-forward relaying mechanism at finite blocklength regime and delay-limited transmission mode. We consider ultra-reliable communication scenarios under discussion for the next fifth-generation of wireless systems, with error and latency constraints. Galileon radiation in the collapse of a thin spherical shell of matter is analyzed. In the framework of a cubic Galileon theory, we compute the field profile produced at large distances by a short collapse, finding that the radiated field has two peaks traveling ahead of light fronts. The total energy radiated during the collapse follows a power law scaling with the shell's physical width and results from two competing effects: a Vainshtein suppression of the emission and an enhancement due to the thinness of the shell., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures. v3: minor changes, reference added. AdS black holes with hyperbolic horizons provide strong-coupling descriptions of thermal CFT states on hyperboloids. The low-temperature limit of these systems is peculiar. In this note we show that, in addition to a large ground state degeneracy, these states also have an anomalously large holographic complexity, scaling logarithmically with the temperature. We speculate on whether this fact generalizes to other systems whose extreme infrared regime is formally controlled by Conformal Quantum Mechanics, such as various instances of near-extremal charged black holes., Comment: Reference added. 14 pages, 3 figures

The Einstein equations in wave map gauge are a geometric second order system for a Lorentzian metric. To study existence of solutions of this hyperbolic quasi diagonal system with initial data on a characteristic cone which are not zero in a neighbourhood of the vertex one can appeal to theorems due to Cagnac and Dossa, proved for a scalar wave equation, for initial data in functional spaces relevant for their proofs. It is difficult to check that the initial data that we have constructed as solutions of the Einstein wave-map gauge constraints satisfy the more general of the Cagnac-Dossa hypotheses which uses weighted energy estimates. In this paper we start a new study of energy estimates using on the cone coordinates adapted to its null structure which are precisely the coordinates used to solve the constraints, following work of Rendall who considered the Cauchy problem for Einstein equations with data on two intersecting characteristic surfaces., Comment: 11 pages. We investigate numerical methods for wave equations in $n+2$ spacetime dimensions, written in spherical coordinates, decomposed in spherical harmonics on $S^n$, and finite-differenced in the remaining coordinates $r$ and $t$. Such an approach is useful when the full physical problem has spherical symmetry, for perturbation theory about a spherical background, or in the presence of boundaries with spherical topology. The key numerical difficulty arises from lower-order $1/r$ terms at the origin $r=0$. As a toy model for this, we consider the flat space linear wave equation in the form $\dot\pi=\psi'+p\psi/r$, $\dot\psi=\pi'$, where $p=2l+n$, and $l$ is the leading spherical harmonic index. We propose a class of summation by parts (SBP) finite differencing methods that conserve a discrete energy up to boundary terms, thus guaranteeing stability and convergence in the energy norm.
