Understanding the effect of interactions in the phase evolution of expanding atomic Bose Einstein condensates is fundamental to describe the basic phenomenon of matter wave interference. Many theoretical and experimental works tackled this problem, always with the implicit assumption that the mutual interaction between two expanding condensates rigidly modifies the phase evolution through an effective force. In this paper, we present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the interference profile of expanding $^{87}$Rb condensates, with a specific focus on the effect of interactions. The purpose of this study is to find evidence for supporting the hypothesis that language is the mirror of our thinking, our prejudices and cultural stereotypes. In this analysis, a questionnaire was administered to 537 people. The answers have been analysed to see if gender stereotypes were present such as the attribution of psychological and behavioural characteristics. In particular, the aim was to identify, if any, what are the stereotyped images, which emerge in defining the roles of men and women in modern society. Moreover, the results given can be a good starting point to understand if gender stereotypes, and the expectations they produce, can result in penalization or inequality. According to quantum mechanics, if we keep observing a continuous variable we generally disturb its evolution. For a class of observables, however, it is possible to implement a so-called quantum nondemolition measurement: by confining the perturbation to the conjugate variable, the observable is estimated with arbitrary accuracy, or prepared in a well-known state. For instance, when the light bounces on a movable mirror, its intensity is not perturbed (the effect is just seen on the phase of the radiation), but the radiation pressure allows to trace back its fluctuations by observing the mirror motion. In this work, we implement a cavity opto-mechanical experiment based on an oscillating micro-mirror, and we measure correlations between the output light intensity fluctuations and the mirror motion. We demonstrate that the uncertainty of the former is reduced below the shot-noise level determined by the corpuscular nature of light.

In the context of a recoil damping analysis, we have designed and produced a membrane resonator equipped with a specific on-chip structure working as a "loss shield" for a circular membrane. In this device the vibrations of the membrane, with a quality factor of $10^7$, reach the limit set by the intrinsic dissipation in silicon nitride, for all the modes and regardless of the modal shape, also at low frequency. Guided by our theoretical model of the loss shield, we describe the design rationale of the device, which can be used as effective replacement of commercial membrane resonators in advanced optomechanical setups, also at cryogenic temperatures.

In view of the integration of membrane resonators with more complex MEMS structures, we developed a general fabrication procedure for circular shape SiN$_x$ membranes using Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE). Large area and high-stress SiN$_x$ membranes were fabricated and used as optomechanical resonators in a Michelson interferometer and in a Fabry-P\'erot cavity. The measurements show that the fabrication process preserves both the optical quality and the mechanical quality factor of the membrane.

We report the experimental observation of two-mode squeezing in the oscillation quadratures of a thermal micro-oscillator. This effect is obtained by parametric modulation of the optical spring in a cavity opto-mechanical system. In addition to stationary variance measurements, we describe the dynamic behavior in the regime of pulsed parametric excitation, showing enhanced squeezing effect surpassing the stationary 3dB limit. While the present experiment is in the classical regime, our technique can be exploited to produce entangled, macroscopic quantum opto-mechanical modes.

In this technical note we address the problem of achieving consensus in a network of homogeneous nonlinear systems. The communication network is supposed to be switching within a finite set of topologies which may be disconnected for finite time intervals. We prove that if the length of the time intervals in which connected topologies are active satisfy an average dwell-time condition consensus is achieved. In this paper, we consider the output synchronization problem for a network of heterogeneous diffusively-coupled nonlinear agents. Specifically, we show how the (non-identical) agents can be controlled in such a way that their outputs asymptotically track the output of a prescribed nonlinear exosystem. The problem is solved in two steps. In the first step, the problem of achieving consensus among (identical) nonlinear reference generators is addressed. In this respect, it is shown how the techniques recently developed to solve the consensus problem among linear agents can be extended to agents modeled by nonlinear d-dimensional differential equations, under the assumption that the communication graph is connected. In the second step, the theory of nonlinear output regulation is applied in a decentralized control mode, to force the output of each agent of the network to robustly track the (synchronized) output of a local reference model., Comment: Submitted to 52nd IEEE Conference on Decision and Control

In this paper we present a general tool to handle the presence of zero dynamics which are asymptotically but not locally exponentially stable in problems of robust nonlinear stabilization by output feedback. We show how it is possible to design locally Lipschitz stabilizers under conditions which only rely upon a partial detectability assumption on the controlled plant, by obtaining a robust stabilizing paradigm which is not based on design of observers and separation principles. In this paper we evaluate, in the context of the linear BESS model the cross-section for the double Higgs-strahlung process. We find that, within the bounds given by the actual experimental data, significant deviations with respect to the SM may arise. In the linear BESS model not only the self-couplings of the Higgs are modified, but also the Z-Higgs couplings. We think that this is a generic feature of any extension of the SM and, in our opinion, it should be kept in mind in analyzing the future data on the process studied here., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures.
