For a graph $G$ and an abelian group $A$, a labeling of the vertices of $G$ induces a labeling of the edges via the sum of adjacent vertex labels. Hovey introduced the notion of an $A$-cordial vertex labeling when both the vertex and edge labels are as evenly distributed as possible. Much work has since been done with trees, hypertrees, paths, cycles, ladders, prisms, hypercubes, and bipartite graphs. In this paper we show that all trees are $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-cordial except for $P_4$ and $P_5$. In addition, we give numerous results relating to $\mathbb{Z}_m$-cordiality of the friendship graph $F_n$. The most general result shows that when $m$ is an odd multiple of $3$, then $F_n$ is $\mathbb{Z}_m$-cordial for all $n$. The ability to accurately model the fitness landscape of protein sequences is critical to a wide range of applications, from quantifying the effects of human variants on disease likelihood, to predicting immune-escape mutations in viruses and designing novel biotherapeutic proteins. Deep generative models of protein sequences trained on multiple sequence alignments have been the most successful approaches so far to address these tasks. The performance of these methods is however contingent on the availability of sufficiently deep and diverse alignments for reliable training. Their potential scope is thus limited by the fact many protein families are hard, if not impossible, to align. Large language models trained on massive quantities of non-aligned protein sequences from diverse families address these problems and show potential to eventually bridge the performance gap. We introduce Tranception, a novel transformer architecture leveraging autoregressive predictions and retrieval of homologous sequences at inference to achieve state-of-the-art fitness prediction performance. Given its markedly higher performance on multiple mutants, robustness to shallow alignments and ability to score indels, our approach offers significant gain of scope over existing approaches. To enable more rigorous model testing across a broader range of protein families, we develop ProteinGym -- an extensive set of multiplexed assays of variant effects, substantially increasing both the number and diversity of assays compared to existing benchmarks., Comment: ICML 2022

The vertex-edge marking game is played between two players on a graph, $G=(V,E)$, with one player marking vertices and the other marking edges. The players want to minimize/maximize, respectively, the number of marked edges incident to an unmarked vertex. The vertex-edge coloring number for $G$ is the maximum score achievable with perfect play. Bre\v{s}ar et al., [4], give an upper bound of $5$ for the vertex-edge coloring number for finite planar graphs. It is not known whether the bound is tight. In this paper, in response to questions in [4], we show that the vertex-edge coloring number for the infinite regular triangularization of the plane is 4. The $P_3$-hull number of a graph is the minimum cardinality of an infecting set of vertices that will eventually infect the entire graph under the rule that uninfected nodes become infected if two or more neighbors are infected. In this paper, we study the $P_3$-hull number for generalized Petersen graphs and a number of closely related graphs that arise from surgery or more generalized permutations. In addition, the number of components of the complement of an infecting set of minimum cardinality is calculated for the generalized Petersen graph and shown to always be $1$ or $2$. While solving Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) with finite element methods (FEM), serendipity elements allow us to obtain the same order of accuracy as rectangular tensor-product elements with many fewer degrees of freedom (DOFs). To realize the possible computational savings, we develop some additive Schwarz methods (ASM) based on solving local patch problems. Adapting arguments from Pavarino for the tensor-product case, we prove that patch smoothers give conditioning estimates independent of the polynomial degree for a model problem. We also combine this with a low-order global operator to give an optimal two-grid method, with conditioning estimates independent of the mesh size and polynomial degree. The theory holds for serendipity elements in two and three dimensions, and can be extended to full multigrid algorithms. Numerical experiments using Firedrake and PETSc confirm this theory and demonstrate efficiency relative to standard elements.

Recent results by Andrews and Merca on the number of even parts in all partitions of n into distinct parts, a(n), were derived via generating functions. This paper extends these results to the number of parts divisible by k in all the partitions of n for which the multiplicity of each part is strictly less than k, ak(n). Moreover, a combinatorial proof is provided using an extension of Glaisher's bijection. Finally, we give the generating functions for this new family of integer sequences and use it to verify generalized pentagonal, triangular, and square power recurrence relations.

While implicit Runge--Kutta methods possess high order accuracy and important stability properties, implementation difficulties and the high expense of solving the coupled algebraic system at each time step are frequently cited as impediments. We present IIrksome, a high-level library for manipulating UFL (Unified Form Language) expressions of semidiscrete variational forms to obtain UFL expressions for the coupled Runge--Kutta stage equations at each time step. Irksome works with the Firedrake package to enable the efficient solution of the resulting coupled algebraic systems. Numerical examples confirm the efficacy of the software and our solver techniques for various problems.

A dielectric multilayer platform has been investigated as a foundation for two-dimensional optics. In this paper, we present, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental demonstration of absorption of Bloch surface waves in the presence of graphene layers. Graphene layers have been grown previously via CVD on Cu foils and transferred layer by layer by PMMA-wet transfer method. We exploit total internal reflection configuration and multi-heterodyne scanning near-field optical microscopy as a far-field coupling method and near-field characterization tool, respectively. The absorption is quantified in terms of propagation lengths of Bloch surface waves. A significant drop (about 17 times shorter) in the propagation length of surface waves is observed in the presence of single layer of graphene., Comment: 8 pages,3 figures

For any positive integers l and m, a set of integers is said to be (weakly) l-sum-free modulo m if it contains no (pairwise distinct) elements $x_1,x_2,...,x_l,y$ satisfying the congruence $x_1+\...+x_l\equiv y\bmod{m}$. It is proved that, for any positive integers k and l, there exists a largest integer $n$ for which the set of the first $n$ positive integers $\{1,2,\...,n\}$ admits a partition into k (weakly) l-sum-free sets modulo m. This number is called the generalized (weak) Schur number modulo $m$, associated with k and l. The measure of the bullwhip effect, a phenomenon in which demand variability increases as one moves up the supply chain, is a major issue in Supply Chain Management. Although it is simply defined (it is the ratio of the unconditional variance of the order process to that of the demand process), explicit formulas are difficult to obtain. In this paper we investigate the theoretical and practical issues of Zhang [Manufacturing and Services Operations Management 6-2 (2004b) 195] with the purpose of quantifying the bullwhip effect. Considering a two-stage supply chain, the bullwhip effect is measured for an ARMA(p,q) demand process admitting an infinite moving average representation. As particular cases of this time series model, the AR(p), MA(q), ARMA(1,1), AR(1) and AR(2) are discussed. For some of them, explicit formulas are obtained. We show that for certain types of demand processes, the use of the optimal forecasting procedure that minimizes the mean squared forecasting error leads to significant reduction in the safety stock level. This highlights the potential economic benefits resulting from the use of this time series analysis. Finally, an R function called SCperf is programmed to calculate the bullwhip effect and other supply chain performance variables.
