The proliferation of machine learning models in critical decision making processes has underscored the need for bias discovery and mitigation strategies. Identifying the reasons behind a biased system is not straightforward, since in many occasions they are associated with hidden spurious correlations which are not easy to spot. Standard approaches rely on bias audits performed by analyzing model performance in pre-defined subgroups of data samples, usually characterized by common attributes like gender or ethnicity when it comes to people, or other specific attributes defining semantically coherent groups of images. However, it is not always possible to know a-priori the specific attributes defining the failure modes of visual recognition systems. Recent approaches propose to discover these groups by leveraging large vision language models, which enable the extraction of cross-modal embeddings and the generation of textual descriptions to characterize the subgroups where a certain model is underperforming. In this work, we argue that incorporating visual explanations (e.g. heatmaps generated via GradCAM or other approaches) can boost the performance of such bias discovery and mitigation frameworks. To this end, we introduce Visually Grounded Bias Discovery and Mitigation (ViG-Bias), a simple yet effective technique which can be integrated to a variety of existing frameworks to improve both, discovery and mitigation performance. Current Conversational AI systems employ different machine learning pipelines, as well as external knowledge sources and business logic to predict the next action. Maintaining various components in dialogue managers' pipeline adds complexity in expansion and updates, increases processing time, and causes additive noise through the pipeline that can lead to incorrect next action prediction. This paper investigates graph integration into language transformers to improve understanding the relationships between humans' utterances, previous, and next actions without the dependency on external sources or components. Dynamical models are often corrupted by model uncertainties, external disturbances, and measurement noise. These factors affect the performance of model-based observers and as a result, affect the closed-loop performance. Therefore, it is critical to develop robust model-based estimators that reconstruct both the states and the model disturbances while mitigating the effect of measurement noise in order to ensure good system monitoring and closed-loop performance when designing controllers. In this article, a robust step by step non-asymptotic observer for triangular nonlinear systems for the joint estimation of the state and the disturbance is developed. The proposed approach provides a sequential estimation of the states and the disturbance in finite time using smooth modulating functions. The robustness of the proposed observer is both in the sense of model disturbances and measurement noise. In fact, the structure of triangular systems combined with the modulating function-based method allows the estimation of the states independently of model disturbances and the integral operator involved in the modulating function-based method mitigates the noise. Additionally, the modulating function method shifts the derivative from the noisy output to the smooth modulating function which strengthens its robustness properties. The applicability of the proposed modulating function-based estimator is illustrated in numerical simulations and compared to a second-order sliding mode super twisting observer under different measurement noise levels., Comment: 24 pages

Plant phenotyping, that is, the quantitative assessment of plant traits including growth, morphology, physiology, and yield, is a critical aspect towards efficient and effective crop management. Currently, plant phenotyping is a manually intensive and time consuming process, which involves human operators making measurements in the field, based on visual estimates or using hand-held devices. In this work, methods for automated grapevine phenotyping are developed, aiming to canopy volume estimation and bunch detection and counting. It is demonstrated that both measurements can be effectively performed in the field using a consumer-grade depth camera mounted onboard an agricultural vehicle.

Motivated by the analysis of extreme rainfall data, we introduce a general Bayesian hierarchical model for estimating the probability distribution of extreme values of intermittent random sequences, a common problem in geophysical and environmental science settings. The approach presented here relaxes the asymptotic assumption typical of the traditional extreme value (EV) theory, and accounts for the possible underlying variability in the distribution of event magnitudes and occurrences, which are described through a latent temporal process. Focusing on daily rainfall extremes, the structure of the proposed model lends itself to incorporating prior geo-physical understanding of the rainfall process. By means of an extensive simulation study, we show that this methodology can significantly reduce estimation uncertainty with respect to Bayesian formulations of traditional asymptotic EV methods, particularly in the case of relatively small samples. The benefits of the approach are further illustrated with an application to a large data set of 479 long daily rainfall historical records from across the continental United States. By comparing measures of in-sample and out-of-sample predictive accuracy, we find that the model structure developed here, combined with the use of all available observations for inference, significantly improves robustness with respect to overfitting to the specific sample.

Continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) is a facile, upscalable and cost-efficient synthetic method enabling the nanostructuring of advanced functional materials in steady conditions, i.e. not in batch synthesis. In this paper, we use CHFS to crystallize NiCo- and NiFe-hydroxides in water solution with 2D nanofeatures. By tuning the synthetic parameters, we disclose the key role of the cation redox chemistry in the transition between two competitive phases: from 2D-nanoplatelets of brucite to layered double hydroxides (LDH). For controlling the precipitation of different Ni, Fe, Co-hydroxide phases, we propose the combined use of an oxidizing (H2O2) and a complexing (NH3) agent. At temperatures as low as 80 {\deg}C, the presence of H2O2 and a low concentration of NH3 favour the Ni2+/Co3+ over Ni2+/Co2+ oxidation states, shifting the product structure from brucite phase (temperatures > 80 {\deg}C) to LDH. Conversely, for the NiFe-hydroxides the transition from LDH (temperatures < 80 {\deg}C) to brucite phase (temperatures > 80 {\deg}C) is controlled by the reaction temperature only. Due to the high stability of Fe3+, the synthesis of NiFe products by CHFS does not require oxidizing and complexing agents, resulting in a robust process for large-scale production., Comment: Tables and Figures at the end of the manuscript

Inkjet printing of 8% Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) thin films is achieved by designing a novel water-based reactive ink for Drop-on-Demand (DoD) inkjet printing. The ink formulation is based on a novel chemical strategy that consists of a combination of metal oxide precursors (zirconium alkoxide and yttrium salt), water and a nucleophilic agent, i.e. n-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA). This chemistry leads to metal-organic complexes with long term ink stability and high precision printability. Ink rheology and chemical reactivity are analyzed and controlled in terms of metal-organic interactions in the solutions. Thin dense nanocrystalline YSZ film below 150 nm are obtained by low temperature calcination treatments (400-500 {\deg}C), making the deposition suitable for a large variety of substrates, including silicon, glass and metals. The distribution of block maxima of sequences of independent and identically-distributed random variables is used to model extreme values in many disciplines. The traditional extreme value (EV) theory derives a closed-form expression for the distribution of block maxima under asymptotic assumptions, and is generally fitted using annual maxima or excesses over a high threshold, thereby discarding a large fraction of the available observations. The recently-introduced Metastatistical Extreme Value Distribution (MEVD), a non-asymptotic formulation based on doubly stochastic distributions, has been shown to offer several advantages compared to the traditional EV theory. In particular, MEVD explicitly accounts for the variability of the process generating the extreme values, and uses all the available information to perform high-quantile inferences. Here we review the derivation of the MEVD, analyzing its assumptions in detail, and show that its general formulation includes other doubly stochastic approaches to extreme value analysis that have been recently proposed.

A new DC thermal model of Carbon Nanotube Field Effect Transistors (CNTFETs) is proposed. The model is based on a number of fitting parameters depending on bias conditions by third order polynomials. The model includes three thermal parameters describing CNTFET behaviour in terms of saturation drain current, threshold voltage and M exponent in the knee region versus the temperature. To confirm the validity of the proposed thermal model, the simulations were performed in very different thermal conditions, obtaining I-V characteristics perfectly coincident with those of other models. In this paper we present an acquisition chain for the measurement of blood arterial pressure based on the oscillometric method. This method does not suffer from any limitation as the well-known auscultatory method and it is suited for wearable health monitoring systems. The device uses a pressure sensor whose signal is filtered, digitalized and analyzed by a microcontroller. In this paper we present an electronic system to perform a non-invasive measurement of the blood pressure based on the oscillometric method, which does not suffer from the limitations of the well-known auscultatory one. Moreover the proposed system is able to evaluate both the systolic and diastolic blood pressure values and makes use of a microcontroller and a Sallen-Key active filter. With reference to other similar devices, a great improvement of our measurement system is achieved since it performs the transmission of the systolic and diastolic pressure values to a remote computer. This aspect is very important when the simultaneous monitoring of multi-patients is required. We present a novel statistical treatment, the "metastatistics of extreme events", for calculating the frequency of extreme events. This approach, which is of general validity, is the proper statistical framework to address the problem of data with statistical inhomogeneities. By use of artificial sequences, we show that the metastatistics produce the correct predictions while the traditional approach based on the generalized extreme value distribution does not. An application of the metastatistics methodology to the case of extreme event to rainfall daily precipitation is also presented.

We discuss the possibility of implementing a novel bio-sensing platform based on the observation of the shift of the leaky surface plasmon mode that occurs at the edge of the plasmonic band gap of metal gratings when an analyte is deposited on top of the metallic structure. We provide experimental proof of the sensing capabilities of a two-dimensional array of gold nano-patches by observing color variations in the diffracted field when the air overlayer is replaced with a small quantity of Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). Effects of rounded corners and surface imperfections are also discussed. Finally, we also report proof of changes in color intensities as a function of the air/filling ratio of the structure and discuss their relation with the diffracted spectra.

A new search for the gravitational lens effects of a significant cosmological density of supermassive compact objects (SCOs) on gamma-ray bursts has yielded a null result. We inspected the timing data of 774 BATSE-triggered GRBs for evidence of millilensing: repeated peaks similar in light-curve shape and spectra. Our null detection leads us to conclude that, in all candidate universes simulated, $\Omega_{SCO} < 0.1$ is favored for $10^5 < M_{SCO}/M_{\odot} < 10^9$, while in some universes and mass ranges the density limits are as much as 10 times lower. Therefore, a cosmologically significant population of SCOs near globular cluster mass neither came out of the primordial universe, nor condensed at recombination., Comment: 14 pages including 3 figures, appeared 2001 January 22

We show that atomic interference in the reflection from two suitably polarized evanescent waves is sensitive to retardation effects in the atom-surface interaction for specific experimental parameters. We study the limit of short and long atomic de Broglie wavelength. The former case is analyzed in the semiclassical approximation (Landau-Zener model). The latter represents a quantum regime and is analyzed by solving numerically the associated coupled Schroedinger equations. We consider a specific experimental scheme and show the results for rubidium (short wavelength) and the much lighter meta-stable helium atom (long wavelength). The fast temporal structures and cosmological distances of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) afford a natural laboratory for testing theories of frequency-dependent propagation of high-energy photons, as predicted for quantum gravity (QG). We calibrate the sensitivity of the proposed Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) by performing simulations which include: the response of GLAST to a GRB fluence distribution; a distribution of spectral power-law indices similar to the EGRET sample; and consideration of gamma-gamma attenuation, significant above ~ 10 GeV for redshifts z > 3 - 5. We find that GLAST should detect > 200 GRBs per year, with sensitivity to a few tens of GeV for a few bursts. GLAST could detect the energy- and distance-dependent dispersion (10 ms / GeV / Gpc) predicted by QG with 1 - 2 years of observations. Attribution to QG would require correlation of GRB redshifts with the temporal and energetic signatures., Comment: 4 pages

We suggest a connection between the pulse paradigm at gamma-ray energies and the recently demonstrated luminosity distribution in gamma-ray bursts: the spectral evolution timescale of pulse structures is anticorrelated with peak luminosity, and with quantities which might be expected to reflect the bulk relativistic Lorentz factor, such as spectral hardness ratio. We establish this relationship in two important burst samples using the cross-correlation lags between low (25-50 keV) and high (100-300 keV and > 300 keV) energy bands. For a set of seven bursts (six with redshifts) observed by CGRO/BATSE and BeppoSAX which also have optical or radio counterparts, the gamma/X peak flux ratios and peak luminosities are anti-correlated with spectral lag. For the 174 brightest BATSE bursts with durations longer than 2 s and significant emission above 300 keV, a similar anti-correlation is evident between gamma-ray hardness ratio or peak flux, and spectral lag. For the six bursts with redshifts, the connection between peak luminosity and spectral lag is well-fitted by a power-law. GRB 980425 (if associated with SN 1998bw) would appear to extend this trend qualitatively, but with a lag of ~ 4-5 s and luminosity of ~ 1.3x10^47 ergs s^-1, it falls below the power-law relationship by a factor of ~ 460. As noted previously by Band, most lags are concentrated on the short end of the lag distribution, near 100 ms, suggesting that the GRB luminosity distribution is peaked on its high end, e.g. N(L) proportional to L^beta, with positive beta., Comment: 25 pages + 6 figures, submitted to ApJ; Revised September 27, 1999 with additonal table, new versions of two figures, and revised text. We study how the spectral properties of resonance fluorescence propagate through a two-atom system. Within the weak-driving-field approximation we find that, as we go from one atom to the next, the power spectrum exhibits both sub-natural linewidth narrowing and large asymmetries while the spectrum of squeezing narrows but remains otherwise unchanged. Via a non-perturbative method we study the population dynamics and photoelectron spectra of Cs atoms subject to intense chirped laser pulses, with gaussian beams. We include above threshold ionization spectral peaks. The frequency of the laser is near resonance with the 6s-7p transition. Dominant couplings are included exactly, weaker ones accounted for perturbatively. We calculate the relevant transition matrix elements, including spin-orbit coupling. The pulse is taken to be a hyperbolic secant in time and the chirping a hyperbolic tangent. This choice allows the equations of motions for the probability amplitudes to be solved analytically as a series expansion in the variable u=(tanh(pi t/tau)+1)/2, where tau is a measure of the pulse length. We find that the chirping changes the ionization dynamics and the photoelectron spectra noticeably, especially for longer pulses of the order of 10^4 a.u. The peaks shift and change in height, and interference effects between the 7p levels are enhanced or diminished according to the amount of chirping and its sign. If dark matter in the form of compact objects comprises a large fraction of the mass of the universe, then gravitational lensing effects on gamma-ray bursts are expected. We utilize BATSE and Ulysses data to search for lenses of different mass ranges, which cause lensing in the milli, pico, and femto regimes. Null results are used to set weak limits on the cosmological abundance of compact objects in mass ranges from 10$^{-16}$ to 10$^{-9}$ $M_{\odot} $. A stronger limit is found for a much discussed $\Omega = 0.15$ universe dominated by black holes of masses $\sim 10^{6.5} M_{\odot}$, which is ruled out at the $\sim$ 90% confidence level., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, fixed minor corrections. We study the stationary state of a Poisson problem for a system of N perfectly conducting metal balls driven by electric forces to move within a medium of very low electrical conductivity onto which charges are sprayed from outside. When grounded at a confining boundary, the system of metal balls is experimentally known to self-organize into stable fractal aggregates. We simulate the dynamical conditions leading to the formation of such aggregated patterns and analyse the fractal properties. From our results and those obtained for steady-state systems that obey minimum total energy dissipation (and potential energy of the system as a whole), we suggest a possible dynamical rule for the emergence of scale-free structures in nature., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, ioplppt.sty

GRBs vary more rapidly than any other known cosmological phenomena. The lower limits of this variability have not yet been explored. Improvements in detectors would reveal or limit the actual rate of short GRBs. Were microsecond "spike" GRBs to exist and be detectable, they would time-resolve stellar mass objects throughout the universe by their gravitational microlensing effect. Analyzing the time structure of sufficient numbers of GRB spikes would reveal or limit $\Omega_{star}$, $\Omega_{MACHO}$, and/or $\Omega_{baryon}$., Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures, in press: ApJ (Letters)

Recent claims of angular correlations between gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and clusters of galaxies are evaluated in light of existing but previously uncorrelated GRB positional data. Additional GRB data sets we use include sub-samples of soft BATSE 3B bursts, bursts located by the Interplanetary Network (IPN), and GRBs localized by COMPTEL. We confirm a previously reported excess by Rood and Struble (1996) of the 185 rich, nearby clusters of galaxies (Abell, Corwin, and Olowin 1989, ACO) in the 1-$\sigma$ error circles of 74 BATSE 3B positions, but find a typical correlation strength of only $~$2.5-$\sigma$ for typical sub-samples. However, none of the 185 ACO clusters occur in the 1-$\sigma$ error boxes of 40 IPN GRBs or 18 COMPTEL GRBs. When all ACO clusters are correlated with BATSE 3B GRBs however, we find an increasingly strong correlation for GRBs with decreasingly small error boxes, reaching above the 3.5-$\sigma$ level. We also find a slight excess of {\it soft} BATSE GRBs near the positions of 185 rich, nearby ACO clusters, but the significance of the correlation averages only $~$2.5-$\sigma$ for sub-samples delineated by softness. We caution that the statistical significance of all these correlations is marginal, and so conclude that the excess is at best only suggestive of a physical association.
