Earlier, a significant enhancement of the nondipole parameters $\gamma_{2p}$, $\delta_{2p}$, and $\zeta_{2p} = \gamma_{2p} + 3\delta_{2p}$ in the photoelectron angular distribution for Ne $2p$ photoionization, owing to resonance interference between dipole ($E1$) and quadrupole ($E2$) transitions, was predicted. This enhancement manifests as narrow resonance spikes in the parameters due to the low-energy $2s \rightarrow 3p$ and $2s \rightarrow 4p$ dipole, as well as the $2s \rightarrow 3d$ quadrupole autoionizing resonances. Given the unique nature of this predicted enhancement, it requires further validation. Specifically, whether these narrow spikes in $\gamma_{2p}$, $\delta_{2p}$, and $\zeta_{2p}$ will or will not retain their values for experimental observation if one accounts for a typical finite frequency spread in the ionizing radiation. To address this, we revisit the previous study, now incorporating the effect of frequency spread in the ionizing radiation, assuming a spread as large as $5$ meV at the half-maximum of the radiation's intensity. We demonstrate in the present paper that while the frequency spread does affect the resonance enhancement of $\gamma_{2p}$, $\delta_{2p}$, and $\zeta_{2p}$, these parameters still retain quantitatively significant values to be observed experimentally. A phylogenetic tree is an edge-weighted binary tree, with leaves labelled by a collection of species, that represents the evolutionary relationships between those species. For such a tree, a phylogenetic diversity index is a function that apportions the biodiversity of the collection across its constituent species. The diversity index polytope is the convex hull of the images of phylogenetic diversity indices. We study the combinatorics of phylogenetic diversity indices to provide a minimal compact description of the diversity index polytope. Materials composed of spin-1 antiferromagnetic (AFM) chains are known to adopt complex ground states which are sensitive to the single-ion-anisotropy (SIA) energy ($D$), and intrachain ($J_{0}$) and interchain ($J'_{i}$) exchange energy scales. While theoretical and experimental studies have extended this model to include various other energy scales, the effect of the lack of a common SIA axis is not well explored. Here we investigate the magnetic properties of Ni(pyrimidine)(H$_{2}$O)$_{2}$(NO$_{3}$)$_{2}$, a chain compound where the tilting of Ni octahedra leads to a 2-fold alternation of the easy-axis directions along the chain. Muon-spin relaxation measurements indicate a transition to long-range order at $T_{\text{N}}=2.3$\,K and the magnetic structure is initially determined to be antiferromagnetic and collinear using elastic neutron diffraction experiments. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements were used to find $J_{0} = 5.107(7)$\,K, $D = 2.79(1)$\,K, $J'_{2}=0.18(3)$\,K and a rhombic anisotropy energy $E=0.19(9)$\,K. Mean-field modelling reveals that the ground state structure hosts spin canting of $\phi\approx6.5^{\circ}$, which is not detectable above the noise floor of the elastic neutron diffraction data. Monte-Carlo simulation of the powder-averaged magnetization, $M(H)$, is then used to confirm these Hamiltonian parameters, while single-crystal $M(H)$ simulations provide insight into features observed in the data., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the magnetic properties of $S=1$ antiferromagnetic diamond lattice, Ni$X_{2}$(pyrimidine)$_{2}$ ($X$ = Cl, Br), hosting a single-ion anisotropy (SIA) orientation which alternates between neighbouring sites. Through neutron diffraction measurements of the $X$ = Cl compound, the ordered state spins are found to align collinearly along a pseudo-easy-axis, a unique direction created by the intersection of two easy planes. Similarities in the magnetization, exhibiting spin-flop transitions, and the magnetic susceptibility in the two compounds imply that the same magnetic structure and a pseudo-easy-axis is also present for $X$ = Br. We estimate the Hamiltonian parameters by combining analytical calculations and Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations of the spin-flop and saturation field. The MC simulations also reveal that the spin-flop transition occurs when the applied field is parallel to the pseudo-easy-axis. Contrary to conventional easy-axis systems, there exist field directions perpendicular to the pseudo-easy-axis for which the magnetic saturation is approached asymptotically and no symmetry-breaking phase transition is observed at finite fields., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

The silicon vacancy (SiV) center in diamond is drawing much attention due to its optical and spin properties, attractive for quantum information processing and sensing. Comparatively little is known, however, about the dynamics governing SiV charge state interconversion mainly due to challenges associated with generating, stabilizing, and characterizing all possible charge states, particularly at room temperature. Here, we use multi-color confocal microscopy and density functional theory to examine photo-induced SiV recombination - from neutral, to single-, to double-negatively charged - over a broad spectral window in chemical-vapor-deposition diamond under ambient conditions. For the SiV0 to SiV- transition, we find a linear growth of the photo-recombination rate with laser power at all observed wavelengths, a hallmark of single photon dynamics. Laser excitation of SiV-, on the other hand, yields only fractional recombination into SiV2-, a finding we interpret in terms of a photo-activated electron tunneling process from proximal nitrogen atoms.

We present the magnetic and structural properties of [Cu(pyrazine)$_{0.5}$(glycine)]ClO$_4$ under applied pressure. As previously reported, at ambient pressure this material consists of quasi-two-dimensional layers of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic dimers which undergo Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet excitations between two magnetic field-induced quantum critical points (QCPs). The molecular building blocks from which the compound is constructed give rise to exchange strengths that are considerably lower than those found in other $S = 1/2$ dimer materials, which allows us to determine the pressure evolution of the entire field-temperature magnetic phase diagram using radio-frequency magnetometry. We find that a distinct phase emerges above the upper field-induced transition at elevated pressures and also show that an additional QCP is induced at zero-field at a critical pressure of $p_{\rm c} = 15.7(5)$ kbar. Pressure-dependent single-crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory calculations indicate that this QCP arises primarily from a dimensional crossover driven by an increase in the interdimer interactions between the planes. While the effect of quantum fluctuations on the lower field-induced transition is enhanced with applied pressure, quantum Monte Carlo calculations suggest that this alone cannot explain an unconventional asymmetry that develops in the phase diagram., Comment: To appear in Phys. The paper highlights the difference the properties the nitrogen vacancy centre in bulk diamond containing nitrogen compared to the properties of single centres. Charge transfer between the negative and neutral charge state can occur with a tunnelling of an electron from an adjacent nitrogen atom without involving conduction or valence electrons. The mechanical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials are important for a wide range of applications including composite materials, van der Waals materials and flexible electronics. Several aspects are highly debated in the literature: For example, the theoretically predicted bending rigidity, $\kappa (T)$, of the most important 2D material, graphene, varies from 0.8~eV to 10~eV for predictions at 0 K and there are predictions that it could increase or decrease with temperature depending on the applied theory. Here we present the first systematic experimental study of the temperature dependence $\kappa(T)$ of graphene. Extracting values of $\kappa$ from the ZA-phonon dispersion relation measured with helium atom scattering, we find the value of $\kappa(T)$ to increase with sample temperature. A linear fit in the temperature range (120 K-480 K) gives a bending rigidity of $\kappa (T) = (1.1 \pm 0.1)[\textrm{eV}] + (0.0013 \pm 0.0001)[\textrm{eV/K}] \times T$.

[Ni(HF$_2$)(3-Clpyradine)$_4$]BF$_4$ (NBCT) is a one-dimensional (1-D), $S=1$ spin chain material that shows no long-range magnetic order down to thermometer temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous ambient pressure inelastic neutron scattering experiments identified NBCT to be in the large-$D$ quantum paramagnetic phase of the $D/J$ phase diagram, where $D$ is the axial single-ion anisotropy and $J$ is the intrachain superexchange. Here, we extend the previous experiments to be at a hydrostatic pressure of 0.9 GPa. By comparing to density matrix renormalization group calculations, we find $D/J$ increases from 1.5 to 3.2 as pressure increases from 0 GPa to 0.9 GPa, which pushes the system further into the large-$D$ phase.

The boson peak is an excess in the phonon density of states relative to the Debye Model, which occurs at frequencies below the Debye limit. It is present in most amorphous materials and, as was recently shown, can sometimes be found also in crystals. Here we present first experimental evidence of the boson peak in a 2D material, namely 2D silica (SiO$_2$). The measurements were obtained by helium atom scattering. A dispersionless boson peak is seen at $6 \pm 0.5$ meV (1.5$ \pm$ 0.15 THz) and $-6 \pm 1.5$ meV ($-1.5 \pm 0.4$ THz), with reasonable evidence for a double excitation at $\pm 12 \pm 2.5$ meV ($2.9 \pm 0.6$ THz).

The widespread, and in many countries unprecedented, use of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for mathematical models which can estimate the impact of these measures while accounting for the highly heterogeneous risk profile of COVID-19. Models accounting either for age structure or the household structure necessary to explicitly model many NPIs are commonly used in infectious disease modelling, but models incorporating both levels of structure present substantial computational and mathematical challenges due to their high dimensionality. Here we present a modelling framework for the spread of an epidemic that includes explicit representation of age structure and household structure. Our model is formulated in terms of tractable systems of ordinary differential equations for which we provide an open-source Python implementation. Such tractability leads to significant benefits for model calibration, exhaustive evaluation of possible parameter values, and interpretability of results. We demonstrate the flexibility of our model through four policy case studies, where we quantify the likely benefits of the following measures which were either considered or implemented in the UK during the current COVID-19 pandemic: control of within- and between-household mixing through NPIs; formation of support bubbles during lockdown periods; out-of-household isolation (OOHI); and temporary relaxation of NPIs during holiday periods. Our ordinary differential equation formulation and associated analysis demonstrate that multiple dimensions of risk stratification and social structure can be incorporated into infectious disease models without sacrificing mathematical tractability. In conservation biology, phylogenetic diversity (PD) provides a way to quantify the impact of the current rapid extinction of species on the evolutionary `Tree of Life'. This approach recognises that extinction not only removes species but also the branches of the tree on which unique features shared by the extinct species arose. In this paper, we investigate three questions that are relevant to PD. The first asks how many sets of species of given size $k$ preserve the maximum possible amount of PD in a given tree. The number of such maximum PD sets can be very large, even for moderate-sized phylogenies. We provide a combinatorial characterisation of maximum PD sets, focusing on the setting where the branch lengths are ultrametric (e.g. proportional to time). This leads to a polynomial-time algorithm for calculating the number of maximum PD sets of size $k$ by applying a generating function; we also investigate the types of tree shapes that harbour the most (or fewest) maximum PD sets of size $k$. Our second question concerns optimising a linear function on the species (regarded as leaves of the phylogenetic tree) across all the maximum PD sets of a given size. Using the characterisation result from the first question, we show how this optimisation problem can be solved in polynomial time, even though the number of maximum PD sets can grow exponentially. Our third question considers a dual problem: If $k$ species were to become extinct, then what is the largest possible {\em loss} of PD in the resulting tree? We present here a study of the magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic dimer material CuVOF$_4$(H$_2$O)$_6\cdot$H$_2$O, in which the dimer unit is composed of two different $S = 1/2$ species, Cu(II) and V(IV). An applied magnetic field of $\mu_0H_{\rm c1} = 13.1(1)~\rm T$ is found to close the singlet-triplet energy gap, the magnitude of which is governed by the antiferromagnetic intradimer, $J_0 \approx 21~\rm K$, and interdimer, $J' \approx 1~\rm K$, exchange energies, determined from magnetometry and electron-spin resonance measurements. The results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations are consistent with the experimental results and predicts antiferromagnetic coupling along all nearest-neighbor bonds, with the magnetic ground state comprising spins of different species aligning antiparallel to one another, while spins of the same species are aligned parallel. The magnetism in this system cannot be accurately described by the overlap between localized V orbitals and magnetic Cu orbitals lying in the Jahn-Teller (JT) plane, with a tight-binding model based on such a set of orbitals incorrectly predicting that interdimer exchange should be dominant. DFT calculations indicate significant spin density on the bridging oxide, suggesting instead an unusual mechanism in which intradimer exchange is mediated through the O atom on the Cu(II) JT axis., Comment: Main - 12 pages, 11 figures. Inter-Coulombic decay (ICD) resonances in the photoionization of Cl@C60 endofullerene molecule are calculated using a perturbative density functional theory (DFT) method. This is the first ICD study of an open shell atom in a fullerene cage. Three classes of resonances are probed: (i) Cl inner vacancies decaying through C60 outer continua, (ii) C60 inner vacancies decaying through Cl outer continua, and (iii) inner vacancies of either system decaying through the continua of Cl-C60 hybrid levels, the hybrid Auger-ICD resonances. Comparisons with Ar@C60 results reveal that the properties of hybrid Auger-ICD resonances are affected by the extent of level hybridization., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, Under journal review

Our previous studies [J. Phys. B 53, 125101 (2020); Euro. Phys. J. D 74, 191 (2020)] have predicted that the atom-fullerene hybrid photoionization properties for X = Cl, Br and I endohedrally confined in C60 are different before and after an electron transfers from C60 to the halogen. It was further found as a rule that the ionization dynamics is insensitive to the C60 level the electron originates from to produce X-@C60+. In the current study, we report an exception to this rule in F@C60. It is found that when the electron vacancy is situated in the C60 level that participates in the hybridization in F-@C60+, the mixing becomes dramatically large leading to strong modifications in the photoionization of the hybrid levels. But when the vacancy is at any other pure level of C60, the level-invariance is retained showing weak hybridization. Even though this case of F@C60 is an anomaly in the halogen@C60 series, the phenomenon can be more general and can occur with compounds of other atoms caged in a variety of fullerenes. We present a theoretical study of vibrational and vibronic properties of a point defect in the dilute limit by means of first-principles density functional theory calculations. As an exemplar we choose the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy center, a solid-state system that has served as a testbed for many protocols of quantum technology. We achieve low effective concentrations of defects by constructing dynamical matrices of large supercells containing tens of thousands of atoms. The main goal of the paper is to calculate luminescence and absorption lineshapes due to coupling to vibrational degrees of freedom. The coupling to symmetric $a_1$ modes is computed via the Huang-Rhys theory. Importantly, to include a nontrivial contribution of $e$ modes we develop an effective methodology to solve the multi-mode $E \otimes e$ Jahn-Teller problem. Our results show that for NV centers in diamond a proper treatment of $e$ modes is particularly important for absorption. We obtain good agreement with experiment for both luminescence and absorption. Finally, the remaining shortcomings of the theoretical approach are critically reviewed. The magnetic properties of the two isostructural molecule-based magnets, Ni(NCS)$_{2}$(thiourea)$_{2}$, $S$ = 1, [thiourea = SC(NH$_2$)$_2$] and Co(NCS)$_{2}$(thiourea)$_{2}$, $S$ = 3/2, are characterised using several techniques in order to rationalise their relationship with structural parameters and ascertain magnetic changes caused by substitution of the spin. Zero-field heat capacity and muon-spin relaxation measurements reveal low-temperature long-range ordering in both compounds, in addition to Ising-like ($D < 0$) single-ion anisotropy ($D_{\rm{Co}} \sim$ -100 K, $D_{\rm{Ni}} \sim$ -10 K). Crystal and electronic structure, combined with DC-field magnetometry, affirm highly quasi-one-dimensional behaviour, with ferromagnetic intrachain exchange interactions $J_{\rm{Co}}\approx+4$ K and $J_{\rm{Ni}}\sim+100$ K and weak antiferromagnetic interchain exchange, on the order of $J'$ $\sim-0.1$ K. Electron charge and spin-density mapping reveals through-space exchange as a mechanism to explain the large discrepancy in $J$-values despite, from a structural perspective, the highly similar exchange pathways in both materials. Both species can be compared to the similar compounds $M$Cl$_2$(thiourea)$_4$, $M$ = Ni(II) (DTN) and Co(II) (DTC), where DTN is know to harbour two magnetic field-induced quantum critical points. Direct comparison of DTN and DTC with the compounds studied here shows that substituting the halide Cl$^-$ ion, for the NCS$^-$ ion, results in a dramatic change in both the structural and magnetic properties., Comment: Main text: 13 pages - 11 figures, 2 tables. The ability to perform nanoscale electric field imaging of elementary charges at ambient temperatures will have diverse interdisciplinary applications. While the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is capable of high-sensitivity electrometry, demonstrations have so far been limited to macroscopic field features or detection of single charges internal to diamond itself. In this work we greatly extend these capabilities by using a shallow NV center to image the electric field of a charged atomic force microscope tip with nanoscale resolution. This is achieved by measuring Stark shifts in the NV spin-resonance due to AC electric fields. To achieve this feat we employ for the first time, the integration of Qdyne with scanning quantum microscopy. We demonstrate near single charge sensitivity of $\eta_e = 5.3$ charges/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$, and sub-charge detection ($0.68e$). This proof-of-concept experiment provides the motivation for further sensing and imaging of electric fields using NV centers in diamond.

We report the results of muon-spin spectroscopy ($\mu^+$SR) measurements on the staggered molecular spin chain [pym-Cu(NO$_3$)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_2$] (pym = pyrimidine), a material previously described using sine-Gordon field theory. Zero-field $\mu^+$SR reveals a long range magnetically-ordered ground state below a transition temperature $T_\mathrm{N}=0.22(1)$ K. Using longitudinal-field (LF) $\mu^+$SR we investigate the dynamic response in applied magnetic fields $0< B < 500$ mT and find evidence for ballistic spin transport. Our LF $\mu^+$SR measurements on the chiral spin chain [Cu(pym)(H$_2$O)$_4$]SiF$_6 \cdot $H$_2$O instead demonstrate one-dimensional spin diffusion and the distinct spin transport in these two systems likely reflects differences in their magnetic excitations., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We use field-cycling-assisted dynamic nuclear polarization and continuous radio-frequency (RF) driving over a broad spectral range to demonstrate magnetic-field-dependent activation of nuclear spin transport from strongly-hyperfine-coupled 13C sites in diamond. We interpret our observations with the help of a theoretical framework where nuclear spin interactions are mediated by electron spins. In particular, we build on the results from a 4-spin toy model to show how otherwise localized nuclear spins must thermalize as they are brought in contact with a larger ancilla spin network. Further, by probing the system response to a variable driving field amplitude, we witness stark changes in the RF-absorption spectrum, which we interpret as partly due to contributions from heterogeneous multi-spin sets, whose 'zero-quantum' transitions become RF active thanks to the hybrid electron-nuclear nature of the system. These findings could prove relevant in applications to dynamic nuclear polarization, spin-based quantum information processing, and nanoscale sensing.

Atom scattering is becoming recognized as a sensitive probe of the electron-phonon interaction parameter $\lambda$ at metal and metal-overlayer surfaces. Here, the theory is developed linking $\lambda$ to the thermal attenuation of atom scattering spectra (in particular, the Debye-Waller factor), to conducting materials of different dimensions, from quasi-one dimensional systems such as W(110):H(1$\times$1) and Bi(114), to quasi-two dimensional layered chalcogenides and high-dimensional surfaces such as quasicrystalline 2ML-Ba(0001)/Cu(001) and d-AlNiCo(00001). Values of $\lambda$ obtained using He atoms compare favorably with known values for the bulk materials. The corresponding analysis indicates in addition the number of layers contributing to the electron-phonon interaction that is measured in an atom surface collision., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Recent theory has demonstrated that the value of the electron-phonon coupling strength $\lambda$ can be extracted directly from the thermal attenuation (Debye-Waller factor) of Helium atom scattering reflectivity. This theory is here extended to multivalley semimetal systems and applied to the case of graphene on different metal substrates and graphite. It is shown that $\lambda$ rapidly increases for decreasing graphene-substrate binding strength. Two different calculational models are considered which produce qualitatively similar results for the dependence of $\lambda$ on binding strength. These models predict, respectively, values of $\lambda_{HAS} = 0.89$ and 0.32 for a hypothetical flat free-standing single-layer graphene with cyclic boundary conditions. The method is suitable for analysis and characterization of not only the graphene overlayers considered here, but also other layered systems such as twisted graphene bilayers., Comment: 25 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Photoionization from atom-C60 hybrid levels in halogen endufullerene molecules, Cl@C60, Br@C60 and I@C60, are calculated using a linear response density functional method. Both the ordinary electron-configuration where the open shell halogen is at the center of C60 and the stable configuration after the atom receives an electron from C60 to form a closed shell anion are considered. Similar ground state hybridization is found for all three systems while, in general, a slight weakening of the effect is noticed after the electron transfer. At lower photon energies, cross sections of the outer hybrid levels attain identical shapes from enhancements driven by the C60 plasmon resonances, while the higher energy emissions remain distinguishable from the differences in atomic responses. These results further show near insensitivity to the choice of a configuration. The inner hybrid cross sections in general exhibit similar overall structures, although differ in details between molecules. However, for these states the results significantly differ before and after the electron transfer -- a feature that can be useful to experimentally determine the real configuration of the molecules via photoelectron spectroscopy., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Submitted

We investigate the low-temperature magnetic properties of the molecule-based chiral spin chain [Cu(pym)(H$_2$O)$_4$]SiF$_6\cdot$H$_2$O (pym = pyrimidine). Electron-spin resonance, magnetometry and heat capacity measurements reveal the presence of staggered $g$ tensors, a rich low-temperature excitation spectrum, a staggered susceptibility and a spin gap that opens on the application of a magnetic field. These phenomena are reminiscent of those previously observed in non-chiral staggered chains, which are explicable within the sine-Gordon quantum-field theory. In the present case, however, although the sine-Gordon model accounts well for the form of the temperature-dependence of the heat capacity, the size of the gap and its measured linear field dependence do not fit with the sine-Gordon theory as it stands. We propose that the differences arise due to additional terms in the Hamiltonian resulting from the chiral structure of [Cu(pym)(H$_2$O)$_4$]SiF$_6\cdot$H$_2$O, particularly a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling and a four-fold periodic staggered field., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures and supplemental information

He atom scattering has been demonstrated to be a sensitive probe of the electron-phonon interaction parameter $\lambda$ at metal and metal-overlayer surfaces. Here it is shown that the theory linking $\lambda$ to the thermal attenuation of atom scattering spectra (the Debye-Waller factor), can be applied to topological semimetal surfaces, like the quasi-one dimensional charge-density-wave system Bi(114) and the layered pnictogen chalcogenides.

[Ni(HF$_2$)(3-Clpyridine)$_4$]BF$_4$ (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, $S = 1$ spin chain material that shows no magnetic neutron Bragg peaks down temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous work identified NBCT to be in the Haldane phase and near a quantum phase transition as a function of $D/J$ to the large-$D$ quantum paramagnet phase (QPM), where $D$ is the axial single-ion anisotropy and $J$ is the intrachain superexchange. Herein, inelastic neutron scattering results are presented on partially deuterated, $^{11}$B enriched NBCT polycrystalline samples in zero magnetic field and down to temperatures of 0.3 K. Comparison to density matrix renormalization group calculations yields $D/J = 1.51$ and a significant rhombic single-ion anisotropy $E$ ($E/D \approx 0.03$, $E/J \approx 0.05$). These $D$, $J$, and $E$ values place NBCT in the large-$D$ QPM phase but precipitously near a quantum phase transition to a long-range ordered phase.

The molecular coordination complex NiI$_2$(3,5-lut)$_4$ [where (3,5-lut) $=$ (3,5-lutidine) $=$ (C$_7$H$_9$N)] has been synthesized and characterized by several techniques including synchrotron X-ray diffraction, ESR, SQUID magnetometry, pulsed-field magnetization, inelastic neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation. Templated by the configuration of 3,5-lut ligands the molecules pack in-registry with the Ni--I$\cdots$I--Ni chains aligned along the $c$--axis. This arrangement leads to through-space I$\cdots$I magnetic coupling which is directly measured for the first time in this work. The net result is a near-ideal realization of the $S = 1$ Haldane chain with $J = 17.5~\rm{K}$ and energy gaps of $\Delta^{\parallel} = 5.3~{\rm K}$ $\Delta^{\perp} =7.7~{\rm K}$, split by the easy-axis single-ion anisotropy $D=-1.2~{\rm K}$. The ratio $D/J = -0.07$ affords one of the most isotropic Haldane systems yet discovered, while the ratio $\Delta_0/J = 0.40(1)$ (where $\Delta_0$ is the average gap size) is close to its ideal theoretical value, suggesting a very high degree of magnetic isolation of the spin chains in this material. The Haldane gap is closed by orientation-dependent critical fields $\mu_0H_{\rm c}^{\parallel} = 5.3~\rm{T}$ and $\mu_0H_{\rm c}^{\perp} = 4.3~\rm{T}$, which are readily accessible experimentally and permit investigations across the entirety of the Haldane phase, with the fully polarized state occurring at $\mu_0 H_{\rm s}^{\parallel}=46.0~\rm{T}$ and $\mu_0 H_{\rm s}^{\perp}=50.7~\rm{T}$. The results are explicable within the so-called fermion model, in contrast to other reported easy-axis Haldane systems. Zero-field magnetic order is absent down to $20~{\rm mK}$ and emergent end-chain effects are observed in the gapped state, as evidenced by detailed low-temperature measurements., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures plus supporting information

Photoionization calculations of the endofullerene molecule Cl@$C_{60}$ with an open-shell chlorine atom are performed in the time-dependent local density approximation (TDLDA) based on a spherical jellium model. Cross sections for atom-fullerene hybrid photoemission studied show the effects of the hybridization symmetry, the giant plasmon and the molecular cavity. Comparisons with the results of Ar@$C_{60}$ provide insights in the role of a shell-closing electron and its influence on the dynamics. The results for Cl@$C_{60}$ are further compared with those of a more stable, lower energy configuration that results after a $C_{60}$ electron transfers to Cl forming Cl$^-$@$C_{60}^+$. This comparison reveals noticeable differences in the ionization properties of the antibonding hybrid state while the bonding hybrid remains nearly unaltered showing a magnification covering the entire giant plasmon energy range., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Although low-dimensional $S = 1$ antiferromagnets remain of great interest, difficulty in obtaining high-quality single crystals of the newest materials hinders experimental research in this area. Polycrystalline samples are more readily produced, but there are inherent problems in extracting the magnetic properties of anisotropic systems from powder data. Following a discussion of the effect of powder-averaging on various measurement techniques, we present a methodology to overcome this issue using thermodynamic measurements. In particular we focus on whether it is possible to characterise the magnetic properties of polycrystalline, anisotropic samples using readily available laboratory equipment. We test the efficacy of our method using the magnets [Ni(H$_{2}$O)$_{2}$(3,5-lutidine)$_{4}$](BF$_{4}$)$_{2}$ and Ni(H$_{2}$O)$_{2}$(acetate)$_{2}$(4-picoline)$_{2}$, which have negligible exchange interactions, as well as the antiferromagnet [Ni(H$_{2}$O)$_{2}$(pyrazine)$_{2}$](BF$_{4}$)$_{2}$, and show that we are able to extract the anisotropy parameters in each case. The results obtained from the thermodynamic measurements are checked against electron-spin resonance and neutron diffraction. We also present a density functional method, which incorporates spin-orbit coupling to estimate the size of the anisotropy in [Ni(H$_{2}$O)$_{2}$(pyrazine)$_{2}$](BF$_{4}$)$_{2}$.

The ST1 center is a point defect in diamond with bright fluorescence and a mechanism for optical spin initialization and readout. The center has impressive potential for applications in diamond quantum computing as a quantum bus to a register of nuclear spins. This is because it has an exceptionally high readout contrast and, unlike the well-known nitrogen-vacancy center, it does not have a ground state electronic spin that decoheres the nuclear spins. However, its chemical structure is unknown and there are large gaps in our understanding of its properties. We present the discovery of ST1 centers in natural diamond. Our experiments identify interesting power dependence of the center's optical dynamics and reveal new electronic structure. We also present a theory of its electron-phonon interactions, which we combine with previous experiments, to shortlist likely candidates for its chemical structure.

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is a widely-utilized system due to its useful quantum properties. Almost all research focuses on the negative charge state (NV$^-$) and comparatively little is understood about the neutral charge state (NV$^0$). This is surprising as the charge state often fluctuates between NV$^0$, and NV$^-$, during measurements. There are potentially under utilized technical applications that could take advantage of NV$^0$, either by improving the performance of NV$^-$, or utilizing NV$^0$, directly. However, the fine-structure of NV$^0$, has not been observed. Here, we rectify this lack of knowledge by performing magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements that quantitatively determine the fine-structure of NV$^0$. The observed behavior is accurately described by spin-Hamiltonians in the ground and excited states with the ground state yielding a spin-orbit coupling of $\lambda = 2.24 \pm 0.05$ GHz and a orbital $g-$factor of $0.0186 \pm 0.0005$. The reasons why this fine-structure has not been previously measured are discussed and strain-broadening is concluded to be the likely reason

The nitrogen-vacancy color center in diamond has rapidly emerged as an important solid-state system for quantum information processing. While individual spin registers have been used to implement small-scale diamond quantum computing, the realization of a large-scale device requires development of an on-chip quantum bus for transporting information between distant qubits. Here we propose a method for coherent quantum transport of an electron and its spin state between distant NV centers. Transport is achieved by the implementation of spatial stimulated adiabatic Raman passage through the optical control of the NV center charge states and the confined conduction states of a diamond nanostructure. Our models show that for two NV centers in a diamond nanowire, high fidelity transport can be achieved over distances of order hundreds of nanometres in timescales of order hundreds of nanoseconds. Spatial adiabatic passage is therefore a promising option for realizing an on-chip spin quantum bus.

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center is a well utilized system for quantum technology, in particular quantum sensing and microscopy. Fully employing the NV center's capabilities for metrology requires a strong understanding of the behavior of the NV center with respect to changing temperature. Here, we probe the NV electronic spin density as the surrounding crystal temperature changes from 10 K to 700 K by examining its $^{13}$C hyperfine interactions. These results are corroborated with \textit{ab initio} calculations and demonstrate that the change in hyperfine interaction is small and dominated by a change in the hybridization of the orbitals constituting the spin density. Thus indicating that the defect and local crystal geometry is returning towards an undistorted structure at higher temperature.

General formulas describing the multiple scattering of electron by polyatomic molecules have been derived within the framework of the model of non-overlapping atomic potentials. The study establishes that the degree of optically induced spin polarization that can be achieved for NV$^- $in 1b diamond is limited by the concentration of single substitutional nitrogen, N$^0$ . The polarization of the individual NV centres in the diamond is dependent on the separation of the NV$^-$ and the nitrogen donor. When the NV$^-$ - N$^+$ pair separation is large the properties of the pair will be as for single sites and a high degree of spin polarization attainable. When the separation decreases the emission is reduced, the lifetime shortened and the spin polarization downgraded. The deterioration occurs as a consequence of electron tunneling in the excited state from NV$^-$ to N$^+$ and results in an optical cycle that includes NV$^0$. The tunneling process is linear in optical excitation and more prevalent the closer the N$^+$ is to the NV$^-$ centre. However, the separation between the NV$^-$ and its donor N$^+$ can be effected by light through the excitation of NV$^-$ and/or ionization of N$^0$. The optical excitation that creates the spin polarization can also modify the sample properties and during excitation creates charge dynamics. The consequence is that the magnitude of spin polarization, the spin relaxation and coherence times T$_1$ and T$_2$ have a dependence on the nitrogen concentration and on the excitation wavelength. The adjacent N$^+$ gives an electric field that Stark shifts the NV$^-$ transitions and for an ensemble results in line broadening. It is observation of changes of these Stark induced effects that allow the variation in NV$^-$ - N$^+$ separation to be monitored. Spectroscopic measurements including that of the varying line widths are central to the study. We present the results of muon-spin spectroscopy ($\mu^{+}$SR) measurements on the molecular spin ladder system (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4(1-x)}$Cl$_{4x}$, [Hpip=(C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)]. Using transverse field $\mu^{+}$SR we are able to identify characteristic behaviour in each of the regions of the phase diagram of the $x=0$ strong-rung spin ladder system (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_4$. Comparison of our results to those of the dimer-based molecular magnet Cu(pyz)(gly)(ClO$_{4}$) shows several common features. We locate the crossovers in partially disordered (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4(1-x)}$Cl$_{4x}$ ($x=0.05$), where a region of behaviour intermediate between quantum disordered and Luttinger liquid-like is identified. Our interpretation of the results incorporates an analysis of the probable muon stopping states in (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_4$ based on density functional calculations and suggests how the muon plus its local distortion can lead to a local probe unit with good sensitivity to the magnetic state. Using longitudinal field $\mu^{+}$SR we compare the dynamic response of the $x=1$ strong-rung material (Hpip)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$ to that of the strong-leg material (C$_{7}$H$_{10}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ (known as DIMPY) and demonstrate that our results are in agreement with predictions based on interacting fermionic quasiparticle excitations in these materials., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

The neutrally-charged silicon vacancy in diamond is a promising system for quantum technologies that combines high-efficiency, broadband optical spin polarization with long spin lifetimes (T2 ~ 1 ms at 4 K) and up to 90% of optical emission into its 946 nm zero-phonon line. However, the electronic structure of SiV0 is poorly understood, making further exploitation difficult. Performing photoluminescence spectroscopy of SiV0 under uniaxial stress, we find the previous excited electronic structure of a single 3A1u state is incorrect, and identify instead a coupled 3Eu - 3A2u system, the lower state of which has forbidden optical emission at zero stress and so efficiently decreases the total emission of the defect: we propose a solution employing finite strain to form the basis of a spin-photon interface. Isotopic enrichment definitively assigns the 976 nm transition associated with the defect to a local mode of the silicon atom.

We present the magnetic and thermal properties of the bosonic-superfluid phase in a spin-dimer network using both quasistatic and rapidly-changing pulsed magnetic fields. The entropy derived from a heat-capacity study reveals that the pulsed-field measurements are strongly adiabatic in nature and are responsible for the onset of a significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE). In contrast to previous predictions we show that the MCE is not just confined to the critical regions, but occurs for all fields greater than zero at sufficiently low temperatures. We explain the MCE using a model of the thermal occupation of exchange-coupled dimer spin-states and highlight that failure to take this effect into account inevitably leads to incorrect interpretations of experimental results. In addition, the heat capacity in our material is suggestive of an extraordinary contribution from zero-point fluctuations and appears to indicate universal behavior with different critical exponents at the two field-induced critical points. He atom scattering has been shown to be a sensitive probe of electron-phonon interaction properties at surfaces. Here it is shown that measurements of the thermal attenuation of the specular He atom diffraction peak (the Debye-Waller effect) can determine the electron-phonon coupling constant $\lambda$ for ultrathin films of metal overlayers on various close-packed metal substrates. Values of $\lambda$ obtained for single and multiple monolayers of alkali metals, and for Pb layers on Cu(111), extrapolated to large thicknesses, agree favorably with known bulk values. This demonstrates that He atom scattering can measure the electron-phonon coupling strength as a function of film thickness on a layer-by-layer basis., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

We present an open-system master equation study of the coherent and incoherent resonance fluorescence spectrum from a two-level quantum system under coherent pulsed excitation. Several pronounced features which differ from the fluorescence under a constant drive are highlighted, including a multi-peak structure and a pronounced off-resonant spectral asymmetry, in stark contrast to the conventional symmetrical Mollow triplet. We also study semiconductor quantum dot systems using a polaron master equation, and show how the key features of dynamic resonance fluorescence change with electron--acoustic-phonon coupling.

Nanomechanical sensors and quantum nanosensors are two rapidly developing technologies that have diverse interdisciplinary applications in biological and chemical analysis and microscopy. For example, nanomechanical sensors based upon nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) have demonstrated chip-scale mass spectrometry capable of detecting single macromolecules, such as proteins. Quantum nanosensors based upon electron spins of negatively-charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have demonstrated diverse modes of nanometrology, including single molecule magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Here, we report the first step towards combining these two complementary technologies in the form of diamond nanomechanical structures containing NV centers. We establish the principles for nanomechanical sensing using such nano-spin-mechanical sensors (NSMS) and assess their potential for mass spectrometry and force microscopy. We predict that NSMS are able to provide unprecedented AC force images of cellular biomechanics and to, not only detect the mass of a single macromolecule, but also image its distribution. The magnetic ground state of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain is sensitive to the relative sizes of the single-ion anisotropy ($D$) and the intrachain ($J$) and interchain ($J'$) exchange interactions. The ratios $D/J$ and $J'/J$ dictate the material's placement in one or other of three competing phases: a Haldane gapped phase, a quantum paramagnet and an XY-ordered state, with a quantum critical point at their junction. We have identified [Ni(HF)$_2$(pyz)$_2]$SbF$_6$, where pyz = pyrazine, as a candidate in which this behavior can be explored in detail. Combining neutron scattering (elastic and inelastic) in applied magnetic fields of up to 10~tesla and magnetization measurements in fields of up to 60~tesla with numerical modeling of experimental observables, we are able to obtain accurate values of all of the parameters of the Hamiltonian [$D = 13.3(1)$~K, $J = 10.4(3)$~K and $J' = 1.4(2)$~K], despite the polycrystalline nature of the sample. Density-functional theory calculations result in similar couplings ($J = 9.2$~K, $J' = 1.8$~K) and predict that the majority of the total spin population of resides on the Ni(II) ion, while the remaining spin density is delocalized over both ligand types. The general procedures outlined in this paper permit phase boundaries and quantum-critical points to be explored in anisotropic systems for which single crystals are as yet unavailable.

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond is emerging as a promising platform for solid-state quantum information processing and nanoscale metrology. Of interest in these applications is the manipulation of the NV charge, which can be attained by optical excitation. Here we use two-color optical microscopy to investigate the dynamics of NV photo-ionization, charge diffusion, and trapping in type-1b diamond. We combine fixed-point laser excitation and scanning fluorescence imaging to locally alter the concentration of negatively charged NVs, and to subsequently probe the corresponding redistribution of charge. We uncover the formation of spatial patterns of trapped charge, which we qualitatively reproduce via a model of the interplay between photo-excited carriers and atomic defects. Further, by using the NV as a probe, we map the relative fraction of positively charged nitrogen upon localized optical excitation. These observations may prove important to transporting quantum information between NVs or to developing three-dimensional, charge-based memories.

Angular dependence of photoemission time delay for the valence $np_{3/2}$ and $np_{1/2}$ subshells of Ar, Kr and Xe is studied in the dipole relativistic random phase approximation. Strong angular anisotropy of the time delay is reproduced near respective Cooper minima while the spin-orbit splitting affects the time delay near threshold.

Using a polaron master equation approach we investigate the resonance fluorescence spectra from coherently driven quantum dots (QDs) coupled to an acoustic phonon bath and a photonic crystal waveguide with a rich local density of photon states (LDOS). Resonance fluorescence spectra from QDs in semiconductor crystals are known to show strong signatures of electron-phonon interactions, but when coupled to a structured photonic reservoir, the QD emission properties are also determined by the frequency dependence of the LDOS of the photon reservoir. Here, we investigate the simultaneous role of coupled photon and phonon baths on the characteristic Mollow triplet spectra from a strongly driven QD. As an example structured photonic reservoir, we first study a photonic crystal coupled cavity waveguide, and find that photons and phonons have counter-interacting effects near the upper mode-edge of the coupled-cavity waveguide, thus establishing the importance of their separate roles in determining the emission spectra. The general theory is developed for arbitrary photonic reservoirs and is further applied to determine resonance the fluorescence spectra from a realistic, disordered W1 photonic crystal waveguide showing important photon-phonon interaction effects that are directly relevant to emerging experiments and theoretical proposals.

Using a mixed-ligand synthetic scheme, we create a family of quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnets, namely, [Cu(HF$_2$)(pyz)$_2$]ClO$_4$ [pyz = pyrazine], [Cu$L_2$(pyz)$_2$](ClO$_4$)$_2$ [$L$ = pyO = pyridine-N-oxide and 4-phpyO = 4-phenylpyridine-N-oxide. These materials are shown to possess equivalent two-dimensional [Cu(pyz)$_2$]$^{2+}$ nearly square layers, but exhibit interlayer spacings that vary from 6.5713~\AA ~to 16.777~\AA, as dictated by the axial ligands. We present the structural and magnetic properties of this family as determined via x-ray diffraction, electron-spin resonance, pulsed- and quasistatic-field magnetometry and muon-spin rotation, and compare them to those of the prototypical two-dimensional magnetic polymer Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$. We find that, within the limits of the experimental error, the two-dimensional, {\it intralayer} exchange coupling in our family of materials remains largely unaffected by the axial ligand substitution, while the observed magnetic ordering temperature decreases slowly with increasing layer separation. Despite the structural motifs common to this family and Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$, the latter has significantly stronger two-dimensional exchange interactions and hence a higher ordering temperature. We discuss these results, as well as the mechanisms that might drive the long-range order in these materials, in terms of departures from the ideal $S=1/2$ two-dimensional square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. In particular, we find that both spin exchange anisotropy in the intralayer interaction and interlayer couplings (exchange, dipolar, or both) are needed to account for the observed ordering temperatures, with the intralayer anisotropy becoming more important as the layers are pulled further apart., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Hybrid quantum systems (HQSs) have attracted several research interests in the last years. In this Letter, we report on the design, fabrication, and characterization of a novel diamond architecture for HQSs that consists of a high quality thin circular diamond membrane with embedded near-surface nitrogen-vacancy centers (NVCs). To demonstrate this architecture, we employed the NVCs by means of their optical and spin interfaces as nanosensors of the motion of the membrane under static pressure and in-resonance vibration, as well as the residual stress of the membrane. Driving the membrane at its fundamental resonance mode, we observed coupling of this vibrational mode to the spin of the NVCs by Hahn echo signal. Our realization of this architecture will enable futuristic HQS-based applications in diamond piezometry and vibrometry, as well as spin-mechanical and mechanically mediated spin-spin coupling in quantum information science., Comment: 6 Pages, 4 Figures

A new quantum-theoretical derivation of the elastic and inelastic scattering probability of He atoms from a metal surface, where the energy and momentum exchange with the phonon gas can only occur through the mediation of the surface free-electron density, shows that the Debye-Waller exponent is directly proportional to the electron-phonon mass coupling constant $\lambda$. The comparison between the values of $\lambda$ extracted from existing data on the Debye-Waller factor for various metal surfaces and the $\lambda$ values known from literature indicates a substantial agreement, which opens the possibility of directly extracting the electron-phonon coupling strength in quasi-2D conducting systems from the temperature or incident energy dependence of the elastic Helium atom scattering intensities., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

The spatial distribution of electric charges forming a square well potential has been analyzed. It is shown that this potential is created by two concentric spheres with a double layer of charges. A C60 shell potential has been calculated under the assumption that it is formed by the averaged charge density of a neutral atom. It is further demonstrated that the phenomenological potentials simulating the C60 shell potential belong to a family of potentials with a non-flat bottom. Two possible types of C60 model potentials are proposed and their parameters have been calculated. We introduce an intuitive and semi-analytical polaron master equation approach to model pulse-driven population inversion and emitted single photons from a quantum dot exciton. The master equation theory allows one to identify important phonon-induced scattering rates analytically, and fully includes the role of the time-dependent pump field. As an application of the theory, we first study a quantum dot driven by a time-varying laser pulse on and off resonance, showing the population inversion caused by acoustic phonon emission in direct agreement with recent experiment of Quilter {\em et al.}, Phys Rev Lett {\bf 114}, 137401 (2015). We then model quantum dots in weakly coupled cavities and show the difference in population response between exciton-driven and cavity-driven systems. Finally, we assess the nonresonant phonon-assisted loading scheme with a quantum dot resonantly coupled to a cavity as a deterministic single photon source, and compare and contrast the important figures of merit with direct Rabi oscillation of the population using a resonant $\pi$ pulse, where the latter is shown to be much more efficient.
