We have completed a Chandra snapshot survey of 54 radio jets that are extended on arcsec scales. These are associated with flat spectrum radio quasars spanning a redshift range z=0.3 to 2.1. X-ray emission is detected from the jet of approximately 60% of the sample objects. We assume minimum energy and apply conditions consistent with the original Felten-Morrison calculations in order to estimate the Lorentz factors and the apparent Doppler factors. The Chandra X-ray observatory has discovered dozens of resolved, kiloparsec-scale jets associated with powerful quasars in which the X-ray fluxes are observed to be much higher than the expected level based on the radio-optical synchrotron spectrum. The most popular explanation for the anomalously high and hard X-ray fluxes is that these jets do not decelerate significantly by the kiloparsec scale, but rather remain highly relativistic (Lorentz factors $\Gamma\approx$10). By adopting a small angle to the line-of-sight, the X-rays can thus be explained by inverse Compton upscattering of CMB photons (IC/CMB), where the observed emission is strongly Doppler boosted. Using over six years of Fermi monitoring data, we show that the expected hard, steady gamma-ray emission implied by the IC/CMB model is not seen in PKS 0637-752, the prototype jet for which this model was first proposed. IC/CMB emission is thus ruled out as the source of the X-rays, joining recent results for the jets in 3C 273 (using the same method; Meyer et al. 2014) and PKS 1136-135 (using UV polarization; Cara et al., 2013). We further show that the Fermi observations give an upper limit of $\delta<$6.5 for the four brightest X-ray knots of PKS 0637-752, and derive an updated limit of $\delta<$7.8 for knots A and B1 of 3C 273 (assuming equipartition). Finally, we discuss the fact that high levels of synchrotron X-ray emission in a slow jet will unavoidably lead to a level of angle-integrated TeV emission which exceeds that of the TeV BL Lac class., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present new detections of cyanodiacetylene (HC$_{5}$N) toward hot molecular cores, observed with the Tidbinbilla 34 m radio telescope (DSS-34). In a sample of 79 hot molecular cores, HC$_{5}$N was detected towards 35. These results are counter to the expectation that long chain cyanopolyynes, such as HC$_{5}$N, are not typically found in hot molecular cores, unlike their shorter chain counterpart HC$_{3}$N. However it is consistent with recent models which suggest HC$_{5}$N may exist for a limited period during the evolution of hot molecular cores., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Intraday variability (IDV) of the radio emission from active galactic nuclei is now known to be predominantly due to interstellar scintillation (ISS). The MASIV (The Micro-Arcsecond Scintillation-Induced Variability) survey of 443 flat spectrum sources revealed that the IDV is related to the radio flux density and redshift. A study of the physical properties of these sources has been severely handicapped by the absence of reliable redshift measurements for many of these objects. This paper presents 79 new redshifts and a critical evaluation of 233 redshifts obtained from the literature. We classify spectroscopic identifications based on emission line properties, finding that 78% of the sources have broad emission lines and are mainly FSRQs. About 16% are weak lined objects, chiefly BL Lacs, and the remaining 6% are narrow line objects. The gross properties (redshift, spectroscopic class) of the MASIV sample are similar to those of other blazar surveys. However, the extreme compactness implied by ISS favors FSRQs and BL Lacs in the MASIV sample as these are the most compact object classes. We confirm that the level of IDV depends on the 5\,GHz flux density for all optical spectral types. We find that BL Lac objects tend to be more variable than broad line quasars. The level of ISS decreases substantially above a redshift of about two. The decrease is found to be generally consistent with ISS expected for beamed emission from a jet that is limited to a fixed maximum brightness temperature in the source rest frame., Comment: Accepted for publication by the Astrophysical Journal

The Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) has surveyed seven square degrees of sky around the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and the European Large Area ISO Survey - South 1 (ELAIS-S1) fields at 1.4 GHz. ATLAS aims to reach a uniform sensitivity of $10 \mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ rms over the entire region with data release 1 currently reaching $\sim30 \mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ rms. Here we present 466 new spectroscopic redshifts for radio sources in ATLAS as part of our optical follow-up program. Of the 466 radio sources with new spectroscopic redshifts, 142 have star-forming optical spectra, 282 show evidence for AGN in their optical spectra, 10 have stellar spectra and 32 have spectra revealing redshifts, but with insufficient features to classify. We compare our spectroscopic classifications with two mid-infrared diagnostics and find them to be in broad agreement. We also construct the radio luminosity function for star-forming galaxies to z $= 0.5$ and for AGN to z $= 0.8$. The radio luminosity function for star-forming galaxies appears to be in good agreement with previous studies. The radio luminosity function for AGN appears higher than previous studies of the local AGN radio luminosity function. We explore the possibility of evolution, cosmic variance and classification techniques affecting the AGN radio luminosity function. Context. Frequent, simultaneous observations across the electromagnetic spectrum are essential to the study of a range of astrophysical phenomena including Active Galactic Nuclei. A key tool of such studies is the ability to observe an object when it flares i.e. exhibits a rapid and significant increase in its flux density. Aims. We describe the specific observational procedures and the calibration techniques that have been developed and tested to create a single baseline radio interferometer that can rapidly observe a flaring object. This is the only facility that is dedicated to rapid high resolution radio observations of an object south of -30 degrees declination. An immediate application is to provide rapid contemporaneous radio coverage of AGN flaring at {\gamma}-ray frequencies detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Methods. A single baseline interferometer was formed with radio telescopes in Hobart, Tasmania and Ceduna, South Australia. A software correlator was set up at the University of Tasmania to correlate these data. Results. Measurements of the flux densities of flaring objects can be made using our observing strategy within half an hour of a triggering event. These observations can be calibrated with amplitude errors better than 15%. We have used the University of Tasmania's 30 m radio telescope at Ceduna in South Australia to regularly monitor the flux density of a number of southern blazars. We report the detection of an annual cycle in the variability timescale of the centimetre radio emission of PKS B1622-253. Observations of PKS B1519-273 over a period of nearly two years confirm the presence of an annual cycle in the variability timescale in that source. These observations prove that interstellar scintillation is the principal cause of inter-day variability at radio wavelengths in these sources. The best-fit annual cycle model for both sources implies a high degree of anisotropy in the scattering screen and that it has a large velocity offset with respect to the Local Standard of Rest. This is consistent with a greater screen distance for these "slow'" IDV sources than for rapid scintillators such as PKS B0405-385 or J1819+3845., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of a radio variability study of the gravitational lens PMN J1838-3427. Our motivation was to determine the Hubble constant by measuring the time delay between variations of the two quasar images. We monitored the system for 4 months (approximately 5 times longer than the expected delay) using the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 9 GHz. Although both images were variable on a time scale of a few days, no correlated intrinsic variability could be identified, and therefore no time delay could be measured. Notably, the fractional variation of the fainter image (8%) was greater than that of the brighter image (4%), whereas lensed images of a point source would have the same fractional variation. This effect can be explained, at least in part, as the refractive scintillation of both images due to the turbulent interstellar medium of the Galaxy., Comment: To appear in AJ (8 pages, including 4 figures)

We present results from high-resolution radio and optical observations of PMN J0134-0931, a gravitational lens with a unique radio morphology and an extremely red optical counterpart. Our data support the theory of Keeton & Winn (2003): five of the six observed radio components are multiple images of a single quasar, produced by a pair of lens galaxies. Multi-frequency VLBA maps show that the sixth and faintest component has a different radio spectrum than the others, confirming that it represents a second component of the background source rather than a sixth image. The lens models predict that there should be additional faint images of this second source component, and we find evidence for one of the predicted images. The previously-observed large angular sizes of two of the five bright components are not intrinsic (which would have excluded the possibility that they are lensed images), but are instead due to scatter broadening. Both the extended radio emission observed at low frequencies, and the intrinsic image shapes observed at high frequencies, can be explained by the lens models. The pair of lens galaxies is marginally detected in HST images. The differential extinction of the quasar images suggests that the extreme red color of the quasar is at least partly due to dust in the lens galaxies., Comment: ApJ, in press. 22 pp, 10 figs

The radio-loud quasar PMN J0134-0931 was discovered to have an unusual morphology during our search for gravitational lenses. In VLA and MERLIN images, there are 5 compact components with maximum separation 681 millarcseconds. All of these components have the same spectral index from 5 GHz to 43 GHz. In a VLBA image at 1.7 GHz, a curved arc of extended emission joins two of the components in a manner suggestive of gravitational lensing. At least two of the radio components have near-infrared counterparts. We argue that this evidence implies that J0134-0931 is a gravitational lens, although we have not been able to devise a plausible model for the foreground gravitational potential. We report the discovery of a gravitationally lensed quasar resulting from our survey for lenses in the southern sky. Radio images of PMN J1632-0033 with the VLA and ATCA exhibit two compact, flat-spectrum components with separation 1.47" and flux density ratio 13.2. Images with the HST reveal the optical counterparts to the radio components and also the lens galaxy. An optical spectrum of the bright component, obtained with the first Magellan telescope, reveals quasar emission lines at redshift 3.42. Deeper radio images with MERLIN and the VLBA reveal a faint third radio component located near the center of the lens galaxy, which is either a third image of the background quasar or faint emission from the lens galaxy., Comment: 21 pp., including 4 figures; thoroughly revised in light of new MERLIN/HST data; accepted for publication in AJ
