This paper presents an approach to radar odometry on $SE(3)$ which utilizes a constant acceleration motion prior. The motion prior is integrated into a sliding window optimization scheme. We use the Magnus expansion to accurately integrate the motion prior while maintaining real-time performance. In addition, we adopt a polar measurement model to better represent radar detection uncertainties. Our estimator is evaluated using a large real-world dataset from a prototype high-resolution radar sensor. The new motion prior and measurement model signifcantly improve odometry performance relative to the constant velocity motion prior and Cartesian measurement model from our previous work, particularly in roll, pitch and height.

A model for soft and diffractive scattering is presented which is incorporated seamlessly into the pre-existing MPI model in the Monte Carlo Event Generator Herwig. With the improved model we are able to describe general aspects of Minimum Bias and Underlying Event data., Comment: 6 pages

A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig (version 7.1) is now available. We propose changes to the colour reconnection model in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig in order to remove the quasi diffractive events from the soft multiple parton interactions. Soft photons produced in heavy ion collisions are an important tool for probing the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. It is therefore crucial to understand the background - soft photons produced in elementary collisions. Low theorem states that soft photon production in hadron collisions is dominated by Bremsstrahlung off charged initial and final state hadrons. Surprisingly, almost every experiment observed an enhancement (by a factor of $2\div 5$) above Low theorem's prediction. This is the longstanding puzzle of "anomalous soft photon production." The phenomenon is not observed in processes with leptonic final states, which suggests that the mechanism is due to nonperturbative QCD evolution. We study this phenomenon using an exactly soluble, massless, Abelian model in $1+1$ dimensions which shares with QCD many important properties: confinement, chiral symmetry breaking, axial anomaly and $\theta$-vacuum. We then apply this model to the soft photon production in the fragmentation of jets produced in $Z^0$ decays and find a qualitative agreement with the data., Comment: Talk presented at Quark Matter 2014 by FL

We attempt to describe the interplay of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD by using the string model. We argue that in the quasi-abelian picture of confinement based on the condensation of magnetic monopoles and the dual Meissner effect, the worldsheet dynamics of the confining string can be effectively described by the $1+1$ dimensional massless electrodynamics, which is exactly soluble. The transverse plane distribution of the chromoelectric field stretched between the quark and antiquark sources can then be attributed to the fluctuations in the position of the string. The dependence of the chiral condensate in the string on the (chromo-)electric field can be evaluated analytically, and is determined by the chiral anomaly and the $\theta$-vacuum structure. Therefore, our picture allows to predict the distribution of the chiral condensate in the plane transverse to the axis connecting the quark and antiquark. This prediction is compared to the lattice QCD results; a good agreement is found., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The propagation of a high energy quark disturbs the confining QCD vacuum inducing the currents in Dirac sea. Since quarks possess electric charge, these induced vacuum quark currents act as a source of soft photon radiation. This can lead to the enhancement of the soft photon production above the expectations based on the charged hadron yields and the Low theorem. We illustrate the phenomenon by using the exactly soluble 1+1 dimensional massless Abelian gauge model that shares with QCD all of the ingredients involved in this mechanism: confinement, chiral symmetry breaking, axial anomaly, and the periodic $\theta$-vacuum. We show that the propagating quark throughout the process of hadronization induces in the vacuum charged transition currents that lead to a strong resonant enhancement of the soft photon yield; the Low theorem however remains accurate in the limit of very soft momenta. We then construct on the basis of our result a simple phenomenological model and apply it to the soft photon production in the fragmentation of jets produced in $Z^0$ decays. We find a qualitative agreement with the recent result from the DELPHI Collaboration., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures

Recent LHC results indicate a suppression of jet fragmentation functions in Pb-Pb collisions at intermediate values of $\xi=\ln(1/z)$. This seems to contradict the picture of energy loss based on the induced QCD radiation that is expected to lead to the enhancement of in-medium fragmentation functions. We use an effective 1+1 dimensional quasi-Abelian model to describe the dynamical modification of jet fragmentation in the medium. We find that this approach describes the data, and argue that there is no contradiction between the LHC results and the picture of QCD radiation induced by the in-medium scattering of the jet. The physics that underlies the suppression of the in-medium fragmentation function at intermediate values of $\xi=\ln(1/z)$ is the partial screening of the color charge of the jet by the comoving medium-induced gluon., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. We address a recent puzzling result from the LHC: the jet fragmentation functions measured in $PbPb$ and $pp$ collisions appear very similar in spite of a large medium-induced energy loss (we will call this "jet fragmentation scaling", JFS). To model the real-time non-perturbative effects in the propagation of a high energy jet through the strongly coupled QCD matter, we adopt an effective dimensionally reduced description in terms of the $(1+1)$ quasi-Abelian Schwinger theory. This theory is exactly soluble at any value of the coupling and shares with QCD the properties of dynamical generation of "mesons" with a finite mass and the screening of "quark" charge that are crucial for describing the transition of the jet into hadrons. We find that this approach describes quite well the vacuum jet fragmentation in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at $z\geq0.2$ at jet energies in the range of the LHC heavy ion measurements ($z$ is the ratio of hadron and jet momenta). In QCD medium, we find that the JFS is reproduced if the mean free path $\lambda$ of the jet is short, $\lambda \leq 0.3$ fm, which is in accord with the small shear viscosity inferred from the measurements of the collective flow. The JFS holds since at short mean free path the quantum interference (analogous to the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in QED) causes the produced mesons to have low momenta $p \sim m$, where $m \simeq 0.6$ GeV is the typical meson mass.
