We report recent observations of lava lakes within patera on Io made by the JIRAM imager/spectrometer on board the Juno spacecraft, taken during close observation occurred in the extended mission. At least 40 lava lakes have been identified from JIRAM observations. The majority (>50%) of paterae have elevated thermal signatures when imaged at sufficiently high spatial resolution (a few km/pixel), implying that lava lakes are ubiquitous on Io. The annular width of the spattering region around the margins, a characteristic of lava lakes, is of the order of few meters to tens of meters, the diameter of the observed lava lakes ranges from 10 to 100 km. The thickness of the crust in the center of some lava lakes is of the order of 5-10 m; we estimate that this crust is a few years old. Also, the bulk of the thermal emission comes from the much larger crust and not from the smaller exposed lava, so the total power output cannot be calculated from the 5-um radiance alone. Eight of the proposed lava lakes have never been reported previously as active hotspots.

Neutral sodium (Na I) is an alkali metal with a favorable absorption cross section such that tenuous gases are easily illuminated at select transiting exoplanet systems. We examine both the time-averaged and time-series alkali spectral flux individually, over 4 nights at a hot Saturn system on a $\sim$ 2.8 day orbit about a Sun-like star WASP-49 A. Very Large Telescope/ESPRESSO observations are analyzed, providing new constraints. We recover the previously confirmed residual sodium flux uniquely when averaged, whereas night-to-night Na I varies by more than an order of magnitude. On HARPS/3.6-m Epoch II, we report a Doppler redshift at $v_{ \Gamma, \mathrm{NaD}} =$ +9.7 $\pm$ 1.6 km/s with respect to the planet's rest frame. Upon examining the lightcurves, we confirm night-to-night variability, on the order of $\sim$ 1-4 % in NaD rarely coinciding with exoplanet transit, not readily explained by stellar activity, starspots, tellurics, or the interstellar medium. Coincident with the $\sim$+10 km/s Doppler redshift, we detect a transient sodium absorption event dF$_{\mathrm{NaD}}$/F$_{\star}$ = 3.6 $\pm$ 1 % at a relative difference of $\Delta F_{\mathrm{NaD}} (t) \sim$ 4.4 $\pm$ 1 %, enduring $\Delta t_{\mathrm{NaD}} \gtrsim$ 40 minutes. Since exoplanetary alkali signatures are blueshifted due to the natural vector of radiation pressure, estimated here at roughly $\sim$ -5.7 km/s, the radial velocity is rather at +15.4 km/s, far larger than any known exoplanet system. Given that the redshift magnitude v$_{\Gamma}$ is in between the Roche limit and dynamically stable satellite orbits, the transient sodium may be a putative indication of a natural satellite orbiting WASP-49 A b., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters (2024 August 2)

Quantum transport studies of spin-dependent phenomena in solids commonly employ the Kubo or Keldysh formulas for the nonequilibrium density operator in the steady-state linear-response regime. Its trace with operators of interest, such as the spin density, spin current density, etc., gives expectation values of experimentally accessible observables. For local quantities, these formulas require summing over the manifolds of {\em both} Fermi-surface and Fermi-sea states. However, debates have been raging in the literature about the vastly different physics the two formulations can apparently produce, even when applied to the same system. Here, we revisit this problem using infinite-size graphene with proximity-induced spin-orbit and magnetic exchange effects as a testbed. By splitting this system into semi-infinite leads and central active region, in the spirit of Landauer formulation of quantum transport, we prove the {\em numerically exact equivalence} of the Kubo and Keldysh approaches via the computation of spin Hall current density and spin-orbit torque in both clean and disordered limits. The key to reconciling the two approaches are the numerical frameworks we develop for: ({\em i}) evaluation of Kubo(-Bastin) formula for a system attached to semi-infinite leads, which ensures continuous energy spectrum and evades the need for commonly used phenomenological broadening introducing ambiguity; and ({\em ii}) proper evaluation of Fermi-sea term in the Keldysh approach, which {\em must} include the voltage drop across the central active region even if it is disorder free., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 115 references; Supplemental Material is available from https://wiki.physics.udel.edu/qttg/Publications

The structural and electronic properties of the CaMnGe$_2$O$_6$ and SrMnGe$_2$O$_6$ clinopyroxene systems have been investigated by means of perturbed angular correlation (PAC) measurements, performed at ISOLDE, combined with $ab-initio$ electronic structure calculations within the density functional theory (DFT) framework. The partial density of states (PDOS) of the CaMnGe$_2$O$_6$ and SrMnGe$_2$O$_6$ stable compounds has been determined, and it has been observed that the requirement of including an on-site Hubbard-$U$ potential was necessary in order to describe the highly correlated Mn $3d$-states. By considering $U_{eff}$=4 eV, we obtained a band gap width of 1.82 eV and 1.70 eV, for the CaMnGe$_2$O$_6$ and SrMnGe$_2$O$_6$, respectively. Combining electric field gradient (EFG) first principles calculations, using a supercell scheme, with experimental PAC results, we were able to infer that the Cd probe can replace either the $A$ (Ca, Sr) or the Mn sites in the crystalline structures. We also showed that Cd substitution is expected to lead to a reduction in the width of the band gap in these systems, evidencing opportunities for potential band-gap engineering.

Perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy combined with $ab-initio$ electronic structure calculations is used to unravel the structural phase transition path from the low-temperature polar structure to the high-temperature structural phase in $Ca_3Ti_2O_7$, a hybrid improper ferroelectric. This procedure explores the unique features of a local probe environment approach by monitoring the evolution of the electric field gradient tensor at the calcium sites. The local environments, observed above 1057 K, confirm a structural phase transition from the $A2_1am$ symmetry to an orthorhombic $Acaa$ symmetry in the $Ca_3Ti_2O_7$ crystal lattice, disagreeing with the frequently reported avalanche structural transition from the polar $A2_1am$ phase to the aristotype $I4/mmm$ phase. Moreover, the EFG temperature dependency, within the $A2_1am$ temperature stability, is shown to be sensitive to the recently proposed $Ca_3Ti_2O_7$ ferroelectric polarization decrease within the 500-800~K temperature range.

Machine-learning techniques, especially deep convolutional neural networks, are pivotal for image-based identification of biological species in many Citizen Science platforms. In this paper, we describe the construction of a dataset for the Portuguese native flora based on publicly available research-grade datasets, and the derivation of a high-accuracy model from it using off-the-shelf deep convolutional neural networks. We anchored the dataset in high-quality data provided by Sociedade Portuguesa de Bot\^anica and added further sampled data from research-grade datasets available from GBIF. We find that with a careful dataset design, off-the-shelf machine-learning cloud services such as Google's AutoML Vision produce accurate models, with results comparable to those of Pl@ntNet, a state-of-the-art citizen science platform. The best model we derived, dubbed Floralens, has been integrated into the public website of Project Biolens, where we gather models for other taxa as well. The dataset used to train the model is also publicly available on Zenodo.

Charge transport in disordered two-dimensional (2D) systems showcases a myriad of unique phenomenologies that highlight different aspects of the underlying quantum dynamics. Electrons in such systems undergo a crossover from ballistic propagation to Anderson localization, contingent on the system's effective coherence length. Between the extended and localized phases lies a diffusive crossover in which the charge conductivity is properly defined. The numerical observation of this regime has remained elusive because it requires fully coherent transport to be simulated in systems whose dimensions are sufficiently large to meaningfully split the mean-free path and localization length scales. To address this challenge, we employed a novel linear scaling time-resolved approach that enabled us to derive the dc-transport characteristics and observe the three expected 2D transport regimes - ballistic, diffusive, and localized., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures

This study analyzes Io's thermally detected volcanic outbursts and mini-outbursts, generally called bright transient eruptions. We examine their evolving characteristics over the history of outburst observations between the Voyager flybys in 1978 and 2022. We catalog, compare, and interpret the data of these bright transient eruptions from several spacecraft flybys and numerous ground-based observation campaigns. To test the spatiotemporal behavior of these events, we compare them to a population of randomly spaced, stochastic events with an equal likelihood of occurrence anywhere on Io's surface. We find that the aggregate of all outbursts is consistent with a random distribution across Io, whereas mini-outbursts strongly prefer the trailing hemisphere (180 to 360 W). On shorter timescales, however, outbursts show a significant change in spatiotemporal behavior before and after the year 2012. Outbursts from 1995 to 2007 favor the northern leading hemisphere, while outbursts from 2013 to 2021 favor the southern trailing hemisphere. These temporally separated clusters of outbursts are remarkably similar to Io's two primary mountainous regions, indicating that outbursts may be related to mountain-forming activity. These trends show how bright transient eruptions are distinct from Io's other forms of volcanism. These could be essential constraints to assess models of Io's interior heat transport between tidal generation and volcanic distribution.

The Kubo formula is a cornerstone in our understanding of near-equilibrium transport phenomena. While conceptually elegant, the application of Kubo's linear-response theory to interesting problems is hindered by the need for algorithms that are accurate and scalable to large lattice sizes beyond one spatial dimension. Here, we propose a general framework to numerically study large systems, which combines the spectral accuracy of Chebyshev expansions with the efficiency of divide-and-conquer methods. We use the hybrid algorithm to calculate the two-terminal conductance and the bulk conductivity tensor of 2D lattice models with over $10^7$ sites. By efficiently sampling the microscopic information contained in billions of Chebyshev moments, the algorithm is able to accurately resolve the linear-response properties of complex systems in the presence of quenched disorder. We present an \textit{ab-initio} study of the quasi-2D layered perovskite Sr$_3$Hf$_2$O$_7$ com\-pound, performed within the framework of the Density Functional Theory and lattice dynamics analysis. At high temperatures, this compound takes a \textit{I4/mmm} centrosym\-met\-ric structure (S.G. n. 139); as the temperature is lowered, the symmetry is broken into other intermediate polymorphs before reaching the ground state structure, which is the \textit{Cmc2$_1$} ferroelectric phase (S.G. n. 36). One of these intermediate polymorphs is the \textit{Ccce} structural phase (S.G. n. 68). Additionally, we have probed the \textit{C2/c} system (S.G n. 15), which was obtained by following the atomic displacements corresponding to the eigenvectors of the imaginary frequency mode localized at the $\mathbf{\Gamma}$-point of the \textit{Ccce} phase. By observing the enthalpies at low pressures, we found that the \textit{Cmc2$_1$} phase is thermodynamically the most stable. Our results show that the \textit{I4/mmm} and \textit{C2/c} phases never stabilize in the 0-20 GPa range of pressure values. On the other hand, the \textit{Ccce} phase becomes energetically more stable at around 17 GPa, surpassing the \textit{Cmc2$_1$} structure. By considering the effect of entropy and the constant-volume free energies, we observe that the \textit{Cmc2$_1$} polymorph is energetically the most stable phase at low temperature; however, at 350 K the \textit{Ccce} system becomes the most stable. By probing the volume-dependent free energies at 19 GPa, we see that \textit{Ccce} is always the most stable phase between the two structures and also throughout the studied temperature range. When analyzing the phonon dispersion frequencies, we conclude that the \textit{Ccce} system becomes dynamically stable only around 19-20 GPa, and that the \textit{Cmc2$_1$} phase, is metastable up to 30 GPa., Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures

We perform Monte-Carlo measurements of two and three point functions of charged operators in the critical O(2) model in 3 dimensions. Our results are compatible with the predictions of the large charge superfluid effective field theory. Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures combining layered ferromagnets and other two-dimensional (2D) crystals are promising building blocks for the realization of ultra-compact devices with integrated magnetic, electronic and optical functionalities. Their implementation in various technologies depends strongly on the development of a bottom-up scalable synthesis approach allowing to realize highly uniform heterostructures with well-defined interfaces between different 2D layered materials. It also requires that each material component of the heterostructure remains functional, which ideally includes ferromagnetic order above room temperature for 2D ferromagnets. Here, we demonstrate large-area growth of Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_{2}$/graphene heterostructures achieved by vdW epitaxy of Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_{2}$ on epitaxial graphene. Structural characterization confirmed the realization of a continuous vdW heterostructure film with a sharp interface between Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_{2}$ and graphene. Magnetic and transport studies revealed that the ferromagnetic order persists well above 300 K with a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In addition, epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) continues to exhibit a high electronic quality. These results represent an important advance beyond non-scalable flake exfoliation and stacking methods, thus marking a crucial step toward the implementation of ferromagnetic 2D materials in practical applications.

Heterostructures made of stacked 2D materials with different electronic properties are studied for their potential in creating multifunctional devices. Graphene (G) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) van der Waals (vdW) systems have been extensively researched, including recent studies on synthesizing h-BN on graphene/SiC(0001) templates. These studies suggest that h-BN encapsulation could occur in addition to vdW epitaxy. This work presents theoretical research on G/h-BN heterostructures on SiC(0001) with a carbon buffer layer. The results show an energetic preference for h-BN encapsulation below a single layer of graphene: G/h-BN/SiC in bilayer systems and G/h-BN/G/SiC in trilayer systems. Electronic structure calculations reveal that the linear energy band dispersion of graphene is maintained in bilayer systems but with Dirac points at different energy positions due to the varied electron doping level of graphene. In trilayer systems, the doping level of graphene also depends on the stacking order. The electronic band structure of G/h-BN/G/SiC features two Dirac points below the Fermi level but with different energies. Less stable systems like G/G/h-BN/ and h-BN/G/G/SiC display parabolic bands near the Fermi level. Additional structural characterizations were performed based on simulations of C-1s core-level-shift (CLS) and carbon K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) to aid future experimental spectroscopy in these graphene/h-BN vdW systems., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

Gait disabilities are among the most frequent worldwide. Their treatment relies on rehabilitation therapies, in which smart walkers are being introduced to empower the user's recovery and autonomy, while reducing the clinicians effort. For that, these should be able to decode human motion and needs, as early as possible. Current walkers decode motion intention using information of wearable or embedded sensors, namely inertial units, force and hall sensors, and lasers, whose main limitations imply an expensive solution or hinder the perception of human movement. Smart walkers commonly lack a seamless human-robot interaction, which intuitively understands human motions. A contactless approach is proposed in this work, addressing human motion decoding as an early action recognition/detection problematic, using RGB-D cameras. We studied different deep learning-based algorithms, organised in three different approaches, to process lower body RGB-D video sequences, recorded from an embedded camera of a smart walker, and classify them into 4 classes (stop, walk, turn right/left). A custom dataset involving 15 healthy participants walking with the device was acquired and prepared, resulting in 28800 balanced RGB-D frames, to train and evaluate the deep networks. The best results were attained by a convolutional neural network with a channel attention mechanism, reaching accuracy values of 99.61% and above 93%, for offline early detection/recognition and trial simulations, respectively. Following the hypothesis that human lower body features encode prominent information, fostering a more robust prediction towards real-time applications, the algorithm focus was also evaluated using Dice metric, leading to values slightly higher than 30%. Promising results were attained for early action detection as a human motion decoding strategy, with enhancements in the focus of the proposed architectures.

It has long been known that quantum particles moving in a periodic lattice and subject to a constant force field undergo an oscillatory motion that is referred to as Bloch Oscillations (BOs). However, it is also known that, under quite general conditions, a biased mesoscopic system connected to leads should settle in a steady-state regime characterized by a constant electric current (described by the Landauer formula). Since both effects are driven by a constant field, these two quantum transport phenomena appear to be at odds with each other. Here, we solve this apparent contradiction by theoretically demonstrating that BOs can actually be observed in biased two-terminal mesoscopic devices as a transient phenomenon, which relaxes for long times to a steady-state current that agrees with the Landauer formula. Furthermore, we also combine analytical and numerical time-evolution results for a one-dimensional tight-binding model of a biased two-terminal mesoscopic system, in order to characterize the decay times of the transient BOs and establish the conditions under which they can occur., Comment: 13 pages + 12 Figures. Using the nascent concept of quantum spin-transfer torque [A. Zholud et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 119}, 257201 (2017); M. D. Petrovi\'{c} {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. X {\bf 11}, 021062 (2021)], we demonstrate that a current pulse can be harnessed to entangle quantum localized spins of two spatially separated ferromagnets (FMs) which are initially unentangled. The envisaged setup comprises a spin-polarizer (FM$_p$) and a spin-analyzer (FM$_a$) FM layers separated by normal metal (NM) spacer. The injection of a current pulse into the device leads to a time-dependent superposition of many-body states characterized by a high degree of entanglement between the spin degrees of freedom of the two distant FM layers. The non-equilibrium dynamics are due to the transfer of spin angular momentum from itinerant electrons to the localized spins via a quantum spin-torque mechanism that remains active even for {\em collinear but antiparallel} arrangements of the FM$_p$ and FM$_a$ magnetizations (a situation in which the conventional spin-torque is absent). We quantify the mixed-state entanglement generated between the FM layers by tracking the time-evolution of the full density matrix and analyzing the build-up of the mutual logarithmic negativity over time. The effect of decoherence and dissipation in the FM layers due to coupling to bosonic baths at finite temperature, the use of multi-electron current pulses and the dependence on the number of spins are also considered in an effort to ascertain the robustness of our predictions under realistic conditions. We present the first theoretical study of transport properties of Weyl semimetals with point defects. Focusing on a class of time-reversal symmetric Weyl lattice models, we show that dilute lattice vacancies induce a finite density of quasi-localized states at and near the nodal energy, causing strong modifications to the low-energy spectrum. This generates novel transport effects, namely (i) an oscillatory behaviour of the dc-conductivity with the charge carrier density in the absence of magnetic fields, and (ii) a plateau-shaped dissipative optical response for photon frequencies below the inter-band threshold, $E_{F}\!\lesssim\!\hbar\omega\!\lesssim\!2E_{F}$.Our results provide a path to engineer unconventional quantum transport effects in Weyl semimetals by means of common point defects., Comment: 6 pages + 1 page of Supplementary Material; 4 + 2 Figures. The electronic structure of a cubic $\mathcal{T}$-symmetric Weyl semimetal is analysed in the presence of atomic-sized vacancy defects. Isolated vacancies are shown to generate nodal bound states with $r^{{\scriptscriptstyle -2}}$ asymptotic tails, even when immersed in a weakly disordered environment. These states show up as a significantly enhanced nodal density of states which, as the concentration of defects is increased, reshapes into a nodal peak that is broadened by inter-vacancy hybridisation into a comb of satellite resonances at finite energies. Edge magnetism in zigzag transition metal dichalcogenide nanoribbons is studied using a three-band tight-binding model with local electron-electron interactions. Both mean field theory and the unbiased, numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo method are applied. Depending on the edge filling, mean field theory predicts different phases: gapped spin dimer and antiferromagnetic phases appear for two specific fillings, with a tendency towards metallic edge-ferromagnetism away from those fillings. Determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations confirm the stability of the antiferromagnetic gapped phase at the same edge filling as mean field theory, despite being sign-problematic for other fillings. The obtained results point to edge filling as yet another key ingredient to understand the observed magnetism in nanosheets. Moreover, the filling dependent edge magnetism gives rise to spin-polarized edge currents in zigzag nanoribbons which could be tuned through a back gate voltage, with possible applications to spintronics., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

Near-bandgap photoemission spectroscopy experiments were performed on p-GaN and p-InGaN/GaN photocathodes activated to negative electron affinity. The photoemission quantum yield of the InGaN samples drops by more than one order of magnitude when the temperature is decreased while it remains constant on the GaN sample. This indicates a freezing of photoelectron transport in p-InGaN that we attribute to electron localization in the fluctuating potential induced by the alloy disorder. This interpretation is confirmed by the disappearence at low temperature of the peak in the photoemission spectrum that corresponds to the contribution of the photoelectrons relaxed at the bottom of the InGaN conduction band.

We present magneto-photoluminescence measurements in a hybrid 2D semiconductor/ferromagnetic structure consisting of MoSe2/hBN/Ni. When the Nickel layer is magnetized, we observe circularly polarized photoluminescence of the trion peak in MoSe2 monolayer under linearly polarized excitation. This build-up of circular polarization can reach a measured value of about 4% when the magnetization of Ni is saturated perpendicularly to the sample plane, and changes its sign when the magnetization is reversed. The circular polarization decreases when the hBN barrier thickness increases. These results are interpreted in terms of a spin-dependent charge transfer between the MoSe2 monolayer and the Nickel film. The build-up of circular polarization is observed up to 120 K, mainly limited by the trion emission that vanishes with temperature.

In response to ESA Voyage 2050 announcement of opportunity, we propose an ambitious L-class mission to explore one of the most exciting bodies in the Solar System, Saturn largest moon Titan. Titan, a "world with two oceans", is an organic-rich body with interior-surface-atmosphere interactions that are comparable in complexity to the Earth. Titan is also one of the few places in the Solar System with habitability potential. Titan remarkable nature was only partly revealed by the Cassini-Huygens mission and still holds mysteries requiring a complete exploration using a variety of vehicles and instruments. The proposed mission concept POSEIDON (Titan POlar Scout/orbitEr and In situ lake lander DrONe explorer) would perform joint orbital and in situ investigations of Titan. It is designed to build on and exceed the scope and scientific/technological accomplishments of Cassini-Huygens, exploring Titan in ways that were not previously possible, in particular through full close-up and in situ coverage over long periods of time. In the proposed mission architecture, POSEIDON consists of two major elements: a spacecraft with a large set of instruments that would orbit Titan, preferably in a low-eccentricity polar orbit, and a suite of in situ investigation components, i.e. a lake lander, a "heavy" drone (possibly amphibious) and/or a fleet of mini-drones, dedicated to the exploration of the polar regions. The ideal arrival time at Titan would be slightly before the next northern Spring equinox (2039), as equinoxes are the most active periods to monitor still largely unknown atmospheric and surface seasonal changes. The exploration of Titan northern latitudes with an orbiter and in situ element(s) would be highly complementary with the upcoming NASA New Frontiers Dragonfly mission that will provide in situ exploration of Titan equatorial regions in the mid-2030s., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1908.01374

Disorder is a key factor influencing the behavior of condensed states of matter, however the true extent of its impact is generally difficult to determine due to the prominent roles played by quantum interference, entanglement between spin and orbital degrees of freedom and proximity to quantum critical points. Here we show that the one-particle disorder self-energy -- a direct probe of the renormalization of low-energy excitations due to defects and impurities distributed randomly in a crystal -- can be obtained by means of unbiased spectral expansions of lattice Green's functions in a computationally expedient manner. Our scheme provides a powerful framework to map out the frequency and wavevector dependence of electronic excitations in unprecedented large tight-binding systems, up to $10^9$ orbitals, with energy resolution only limited by the mean level spacing. We demonstrate the versatility of our approach in 3 distinct problems: (i) the Gade singularity in honeycomb layers with dilute topological defects; (ii) the rich landscape of impurity resonances in a spin-orbit-coupled ferromagnet; and (iii) the tailoring of emergent s-wave and p-wave superconducting phases in graphene via atomic defects. These examples reveal rich features in the disorder self-energy $\Sigma_{\textrm{dis}}(\mathbf{k},\omega)$ that are absent from the self-consistent T-matrix approach and other common approximation schemes, which include regimes of nontrivial wavevector dependence and anomalous dependence upon the impurity concentration. The analysis of differential gene expression from RNA-Seq data has become a standard for several research areas mainly involving bioinformatics. The steps for the computational analysis of these data include many data types and file formats, and a wide variety of computational tools that can be applied alone or together as pipelines. This paper presents a review of differential expression analysis pipeline, addressing its steps and the respective objectives, the principal methods available in each step and their properties, bringing an overview in an organized way in this context. In particular, this review aims to address mainly the aspects involved in the differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis from RNA sequencing data (RNA-Seq), considering the computational methods and its properties. In addition, a timeline of the evolution of computational methods for DEG is presented and discussed, as well as the relationships existing between the main computational tools are presented by an interaction network. A discussion on the challenges and gaps in DEG analysis is also highlighted in this review.

The concept of local pressure is pivotal to describe many important physical phenomena, such as buoyancy or atmospheric phenomena, which always require the consideration of space-varying pressure fields. These fields have precise definitions within the phenomenology of hydro-thermodynamics, but a simple and pedagogical microscopic description based on Statistical Mechanical is still lacking in present literature. In this paper, we propose a new microscopic definition of the local pressure field inside a classical fluid, relying on a local barometer potential that is built into the many-particle Hamiltonian. Such a setup allows the pressure to be locally defined, at an arbitrary point inside the fluid, simply by doing a standard ensemble average of the radial force exerted by the barometer potential on the gas' particles. This setup is further used to give a microscopic derivation of the generalized Archimedes's buoyancy principle, in the presence of an arbitrary external field. As instructive examples, buoyancy force fields are calculated for ideal fluids in the presence of: i) a uniform force field, ii) a spherically symmetric harmonic confinement field, and iii) a centrifugal rotating frame., Comment: Pedagogical Paper with 9 pages, 3 figures. We propose a fiber-based environmental sensor that exploits the reflection phase shift tunability provided by the use of layered coatings composed of dielectric slabs spaced by conducting membranes. A transfer matrix study is done in a simplified theoretical model, for which an enhanced sensitivity of the reflection interference pattern to the output medium is demonstrated, in the typical refractive index range of liquid media. An experimental configuration using a cascaded Fabry-Perot microcavity coated by a graphene oxide/polyethylenimine (GO/PEI) multilayered structure is demonstrated. We study the phase diagram of 5-dimensional $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. We consider two extensions of the fundamental plaquette Wilson action in the search for the continuous phase transition suggested by the $4+\epsilon$ expansion. The extensions correspond to new terms in the action: i) a unit size plaquette in the adjoint representation or ii) a two-unit sided square plaquette in the fundamental representation. We use Monte Carlo to sample the first and second derivative of the entropy near the confinement phase transition, with lattices up to $12^{5}$. While we exclude the presence of a second order phase transition in the parameter space we sampled for model i), our data is not conclusive in some regions of the parameter space of model ii)., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. Thanks to the Cassini-Huygens mission, Titan, the pale orange dot of Pioneer and Voyager encounters has been revealed to be a dynamic, hydrologically-shaped, organic-rich ocean world offering unparalleled opportunities to explore prebiotic chemistry. And while Cassini-Huygens revolutionized our understanding of each of the three layers of Titan--the atmosphere, the surface, and the interior--we are only beginning to hypothesize how these realms interact. In this paper, we summarize the current state of Titan knowledge and discuss how future exploration of Titan would address some of the next decade's most compelling planetary science questions. The structure of the electronic nonlinear optical conductivity is elucidated in a detailed study of the time-reversal symmetric two-band model. The nonlinear conductivity is decomposed as a sum of contributions related with different regions of the First Brillouin Zone, defined by single or multiphoton resonances. All contributions are written in terms of the same integrals, which contain all information specific to the particular model under study. In this way, ready-to-use formulas are provided that reduce the often tedious calculations of the second and third order optical conductivity to the evaluation of a small set of similar integrals. In the scenario where charge carriers are present prior to optical excitation, Fermi surface contributions must also be considered and are shown to have an universal frequency dependence, tunable by doping. General characteristics are made evident in this type of resonance-based analysis: the existence of step functions that determine the chemical potential dependence of electron-hole symmetric insulators; the determination of the imaginary part by Hilbert transforms, simpler than those of the nonlinear Kramers-Kr\"{o}nig relations; the absence of Drude peaks in the diagonal elements of the second order conductivity, among others. As examples, analytical expressions are derived for the nonlinear conductivities of some simple systems: a very basic model of direct gap semiconductors and the Dirac fermions of monolayer graphene.

We present a model for measuring the impact of offloading soft real-time jobs over multi-tier cloud infrastructures. The jobs originate in mobile devices and offloading strategies may choose to execute them locally, in neighbouring devices, in cloudlets or in infrastructure cloud servers. Within this specification, we put forward several such offloading strategies characterised by their differential use of the cloud tiers with the goal of optimizing execution time and/or energy consumption. We implement an instance of the model using Jay, a software framework for adaptive computation offloading in hybrid edge clouds. The framework is modular and allows the model and the offloading strategies to be seamlessly implemented while providing the tools to make informed runtime offloading decisions based on system feedback, namely through a built-in system profiler that gathers runtime information such as workload, energy consumption and available bandwidth for every participating device or server. The results show that offloading strategies sensitive to runtime conditions can effectively and dynamically adjust their offloading decisions to produce significant gains in terms of their target optimization functions, namely, execution time, energy consumption and fulfillment of job deadlines.

Dirac-Weyl semimetals are unique three-dimensional (3D) phases of matter with gapless electrons and novel electrodynamic properties believed to be robust against weak perturbations. Here, we unveil the crucial influence of the disorder statistics and impurity diversity in the stability of incompressible electrons in 3D semimetals. Focusing on the critical role played by rare impurity configurations, we show that the abundance of low-energy resonances in the presence of diluted random potential wells endows rare localized zero-energy modes with statistical significance, thus lifting the nodal density of states. The strong nonperturbative effect here reported converts the 3D Dirac-Weyl semimetal into a compressible metal even at the lowest impurity densities. The National Academy Committee on Astrobiology and Planetary Science (CAPS) made a recommendation to study a large/medium-class dedicated space telescope for planetary science, going beyond the Discovery-class dedicated planetary space telescope endorsed in Visions and Voyages. Such a telescope would observe targets across the entire solar system, engaging a broad spectrum of the science community. It would ensure that the high-resolution, high-sensitivity observations of the solar system in visible and UV wavelengths revolutionized by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) could be extended. A dedicated telescope for solar system science would: (a) transform our understanding of time-dependent phenomena in our solar system that cannot be studied currently under programs to observe and visit new targets and (b) enable a comprehensive survey and spectral characterization of minor bodies across the solar system, which requires a large time allocation not supported by existing facilities. The time-domain phenomena to be explored are critically reliant on high spatial resolution UV-visible observations. This paper presents science themes and key questions that require a long-lasting space telescope dedicated to planetary science that can capture high-quality, consistent data at the required cadences that are free from effects of the terrestrial atmosphere and differences across observing facilities. Such a telescope would have excellent synergy with astrophysical facilities by placing planetary discoveries made by astrophysics assets in temporal context, as well as triggering detailed follow-up observations using larger telescopes. We advocate for a mission concept study for a space telescope dedicated to solar system science in Earth orbit. Such a study was recommended by the Committee on Astrobiology and Planetary Science (CAPS) report "Getting Ready for the Next Planetary Science Decadal Survey." The Mid-Decadal Review also recommended NASA to assess the role and value of space telescopes for planetary science. The need for high-resolution, UV-Visible capabilities is especially acute for planetary science with the impending end of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST); however, NASA has not funded a planetary telescope concept study, and the need to assess its value remains. In this work, we present the analytical expression for the second order divergence in the third order DC response of a cold semiconductor, which can be probed by different electric field setups. Results from this expression were then compared, for the response of the gapped graphene monolayer, with numerical results from a velocity gauge calculation of the third order conductivity. We present KITE, a general purpose open-source tight-binding software for accurate real-space simulations of electronic structure and quantum transport properties of large-scale molecular and condensed systems with tens of billions of atomic orbitals (N~10^10). KITE's core is written in C++, with a versatile Python-based interface, and is fully optimised for shared memory multi-node CPU architectures, thus scalable, efficient and fast. At the core of KITE is a seamless spectral expansion of lattice Green's functions, which enables large-scale calculations of generic target functions with uniform convergence and fine control over energy resolution. Several functionalities are demonstrated, ranging from simulations of local density of states and photo-emission spectroscopy of disordered materials to large-scale computations of optical conductivity tensors and real-space wave-packet propagation in the presence of magneto-static fields and spin-orbit coupling. On-the-fly calculations of real-space Green's functions are carried out with an efficient domain decomposition technique, allowing KITE to achieve nearly ideal linear scaling in its multi-threading performance. Crystalline defects and disorder, including vacancies, adsorbates and charged impurity centers, can be easily set up with KITE's intuitive interface, paving the way to user-friendly large-scale quantum simulations of equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of molecules, disordered crystals and heterostructures subject to a variety of perturbations and external conditions., Comment: 38 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables. In this paper, we study the emergence of a Landauer transport regime from the quantum-mechanical dynamics of free electrons in a disordered tight-binding chain, which is coupled to finite leads with open boundaries. Both partitioned and partition-free initial conditions are analyzed and seen to give rise, for large enough leads, to the same spatially uniform quasi-steady-state current, which agrees with the Landauer value. The quasi-steady-state regime is preceded by a transient regime, which last for a time proportional to the length of the disordered sample, and followed by recursions, after a time that is proportional to the lead size. These theoretical predictions may be of interest to future experiments on transport of fermionic ultra-cold atoms across optical lattices. We also observe finite-size current oscillations, superimposed on the quasi-steady-state, whose behavior depends crucially on the conditions initially imposed on the system. Finally, we show how a time-resolved Kubo formula is able to reproduce this Landauer transport regime, as the leads grow bigger., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures ---formed by stacking or growing two-dimensional (2D) crystals on top of each other--- have emerged as a new promising route to tailor and engineer the properties of 2D materials. Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG), a simple vdW structure where the interference between two misaligned graphene lattices leads to the formation of a moir\'e pattern, is a test bed to study the effects of the interaction and misalignment between layers, key players for determining the electronic properties of these stackings. In this chapter, we present in a pedagogical way the general theory used to describe lattice mismatched and misaligned vdW structures. We apply it to the study of tBLG in the limit of small rotations and see how the coupling between the two layers leads both to an angle dependent renormalization of graphene's Fermi velocity and appearance of low-energy van Hove singularities. The optical response of this system is then addressed by computing the optical conductivity and the dispersion relation of tBLG surface plasmon-polaritons.

Rare events in non-linear dynamical systems are difficult to sample because of the sensitivity to perturbations of initial conditions and of complex landscapes in phase space. Here we discuss strategies to control these difficulties and succeed in obtainining an efficient sampling within a Metropolis-Hastings Monte Carlo framework. After reviewing previous successes in the case of strongly chaotic systems, we discuss the case of weakly chaotic systems. We show how different types of non-hyperbolicities limit the efficiency of previously designed sampling methods and we discuss strategies how to account for them. We focus on paradigmatic low-dimensional chaotic systems such as the logistic map, the Pomeau-Maneville map, and area-preserving maps with mixed phase space., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures; to appear in Chaos

Epitaxial graphene (EG) produced from SiC surfaces by silicon sublimation is emerging as a material for electronic applications due to its good electronic properties and availability over large areas on a semiconducting substrate. In this contribution, we report on the transport of charge carriers in EG on SiC using high-frequency ($>$ 1 GHz) surface acoustic waves (SAWs). In our devices, the EG is coated with hydrogen-silsesquioxane, SiO$_2$ and a ZnO layer. This allows the efficient generation of SAWs and is compatible with the deposition of a metal top gate. Measurements of frequency- and time-resolved power scattering parameters confirm the generation and propagation of SAWs with frequencies of up to more than 7 GHz. Furthermore, the ZnO coating enhances the acoustoelectric currents by two orders of magnitude as compared to our previous uncoated samples. The possibility of having a delocalization transition in the 1D de Moura-Lyra class of models (having a power-spectrum $\propto q^{-\alpha})$ has been the object of a long standing discussion in the literature, filled with ambiguities. In this letter, we report the first numerical evidences that such a transition happens at $\alpha=1$, where the localization length (measured from the scaling of the conductance) is shown to diverge as $(1-\alpha)^{-1}$. The persistent finite-size scaling of the data is shown to be caused by a very slow convergence of the nearest-neighbor correlator to its infinite-size limit, and controlled by the choice of a proper scaling parameter. This last conclusion leads to the re-interpretation of the localization in these models to be caused by an effective Anderson uncorrelated model at small length-scales. We report on luminescent centers contained in a few-layer-thick hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) film grown on Ni by molecular beam epitaxy. After transfer to a SiO$_2$/Si substrate, sharp lines are observed in photo- and cathodoluminescence spectra in both the ultraviolet and the visible range. Spatially resolved measurements reveal that the luminescent centers responsible for these lines are localized within microscopic multi-layer islands that form at the nucleation centers of the h-BN film. The comparison of their energy, polarization and phonon replica emission with previous theoretical predictions suggest that the N$_\mathrm{B}$V$_\mathrm{N}$ anti-site could be one of the light emitters present in our sample. Moreover, we have also observed evidences of other kinds of centers that could be associated to defects containing carbon or oxygen. The characterized luminescent defects could have potential applications as quantum light sources.

We investigate the effect of surface acoustic waves on the atomic-like optical emission from defect centers in hexagonal boron nitride layers deposited on the surface of a LiNbO$_3$ substrate. The dynamic strain field of the surface acoustic waves modulates the emission lines resulting in intensity variations as large as 50% and oscillations of the emission energy with an amplitude of almost 1 meV. From a systematic study of the dependence of the modulation on the acoustic wave power, we determine a hydrostatic deformation potential for defect centers in this two-dimensional material of about 40 meV/%. Furthermore, we show that the dynamic piezoelectric field of the acoustic wave could contribute to the stabilization of the optical properties of these centers. Our results show that surface acoustic waves are a powerful tool to modulate and control the electronic states of two-dimensional materials.

In this work, we present numerical results for the second and third order conductivities of the plain graphene and gapped graphene monolayers associated with the second and third harmonic generation, the optical rectification and the optical Kerr effect. The frequencies considered here range from the microwave to the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum, the latter end of which had not yet been studied. These calculations are performed in the velocity gauge and directly address the components of the conductivity tensor. In the velocity gauge, the radiation field is represented by a power series in the vector potential, and we discuss a very efficient way of calculating its coefficients in the context of tight-binding models., Comment: 13 pages, 19 figures

Overpopulation and environmental degradation due to inadequate resource-use are outcomes of human's ecosystem engineering that has profoundly modified the world's landscape. Despite the age-old concern that unchecked population and economic growth may be unsustainable, the prospect of societal collapse remains contentious today. Contrasting with the usual approach to modeling human-nature interactions, which are based on the Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model with humans as the predators and nature as the prey, here we address this issue using a discrete-time population dynamics model of ecosystem engineers. The growth of the population of engineers is modeled by the Beverton-Holt equation with a density-dependent carrying capacity that is proportional to the number of usable habitats. These habitats (e.g., farms) are the products of the work of the individuals on the virgin habitats (e.g., native forests), hence the denomination engineers of ecosystems to those agents. The human-made habitats decay into degraded habitats, which eventually regenerate into virgin habitats. For slow regeneration resources, we find that the dynamics is dominated by cycles of prosperity and collapse, in which the population reaches vanishing small densities. However, increase of the efficiency of the engineers to explore the resources eliminates the dangerous cyclical patterns of feast and famine and leads to a stable equilibrium that balances population growth and resource availability. This finding supports the viewpoint of growth optimists that technological progress may avoid collapse.

In this paper, we developed a basis-independent perturbative method for calculating the non-linear optical response of arbitrary non-interacting tight-binding models. Our method is based on the non-equilibrium Keldysh formalism and allows an efficient numerical implementation within the framework of the Kernel Polynomial Method for systems which are not required to be translation-invariant. Some proof-of-concept results of the second-order optical conductivity are presented for the special case of gapped graphene with vacancies and an on-site Anderson disordered potential., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

Tidal heating is the major source of heat in the outer Solar System. Because of its strong tidal interaction with Jupiter and the other Galilean Satellites, Io is incredibly volcanically active. We use the directly measured volcanic activity level of Io's volcanoes as a proxy for surface heat flow and compare to tidal heating model predictions. Volcanic activity is a better proxy for heat flow than simply the locations of volcanic constructs. We determine the volcanic activity level using three data sets: Galileo PPR, Galileo NIMS, and New Horizons LEISA. We also present a systematic reanalysis of the Galileo NIMS observations to determine the 3.5 micron brightness of 51 active volcanoes. We find that potential differences in volcanic style between high and low latitudes make high latitude observations unreliable in distinguishing between tidal heating models. Observations of Io's polar areas, such as those by JUNO, are necessary to unambiguously understand Io's heat flow. However, all three of the data sets examined show a relative dearth of volcanic brightness near 180 W (anti-Jovian point) and the equator and the only data set with good observations of the sub-Jovian point (LEISA) also shows a lack of volcanic brightness in that region. These observations are more consistent with the mantle-heating model than the asthenospheric-heating model. Furthermore, all three of the data sets are consistent with four-fold symmetry in longitude and peak heat flow at mid-latitudes, which best matches with the combined heating case of Tackley et al. We investigate the spectral function of Bloch states in an one-dimensional tight-binding non-interacting chain with two different models of static correlated disorder, at zero temperature. We report numerical calculations of the single-particle spectral function based on the Kernel Polynomial Method, which has an $\mathcal{O}(N)$ computational complexity. These results are then confirmed by analytical calculations, where precise conditions were obtained for the appearance of a classical limit in a single-band lattice system. Spatial correlations in the disordered potential give rise to non-perturbative spectral functions shaped as the probability distribution of the random on-site energies, even at low disorder strengths. In the case of disordered potentials with an algebraic power-spectrum, $\propto\left|k\right|^{-\alpha}$, we show that the spectral function is not self-averaging for $\alpha\geq1$., Comment: 27 Pages with 10 Figures

The strong light-matter interaction in transition Metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) monolayers (MLs) is governed by robust excitons. Important progress has been made to control the dielectric environment surrounding the MLs, especially through hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulation, which drastically reduces the inhomogeneous contribution to the exciton linewidth. Most studies use exfoliated hBN from high quality flakes grown under high pressure. In this work, we show that hBN grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) over a large surface area substrate has a similarly positive impact on the optical emission from TMD MLs. We deposit MoS$_2$ and MoSe$_2$ MLs on ultrathin hBN films (few MLs thick) grown on Ni/MgO(111) by MBE. Then we cover them with exfoliated hBN to finally obtain an encapsulated sample : exfoliated hBN/TMD ML/MBE hBN. We observe an improved optical quality of our samples compared to TMD MLs exfoliated directly on SiO$_2$ substrates. Our results suggest that hBN grown by MBE could be used as a flat and charge free substrate for fabricating TMD-based heterostructures on a larger scale., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

How can a renormalization group fixed point be scale invariant without being conformal? Polchinski (1988) showed that this may happen if the theory contains a virial current -- a non-conserved vector operator of dimension exactly $(d-1)$, whose divergence expresses the trace of the stress tensor. We point out that this scenario can be probed via lattice Monte Carlo simulations, using the critical 3d Ising model as an example. Our results put a lower bound $\Delta_V>5.0$ on the scaling dimension of the lowest virial current candidate $V$, well above 2 expected for the true virial current. In this work, the difficulties inherent to perturbative calculations in the velocity gauge are addressed. In particular, it is shown how calculations of nonlinear optical responses in the independent particle approximation can be done to any order and for any finite band model. The procedure and advantages of the velocity gauge in such calculations are described. The addition of a phenomenological relaxation parameter is also discussed. As an illustration, the nonlinear optical response of monolayer graphene is numerically calculated using the velocity gauge.
