PG 1448+273 is a luminous, nearby ($z=0.0645$), narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy, which likely accretes close to the Eddington limit. Previous X-ray observations of PG 1448 with XMM-Newton in 2017 and NuSTAR in 2022 revealed the presence of an ultra fast outflow, as seen through its blueshifted iron K absorption profile, where the outflow velocity appeared to vary in the range $0.1-0.3c$. In this work, new X-ray observations of PG 1448 are presented, in the form of four simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations performed in July and August 2023. The X-ray spectra appeared at a similar flux in each observation, making it possible to analyze the mean 2023 X-ray spectrum at high signal to noise. A broad ($\sigma=1$ keV) and highly blue-shifted ($E=9.8\pm0.4$ keV) iron K absorption profile is revealed in the mean spectrum. The profile can be modeled by a fast, geometrically thick accretion disk wind, which reveals a maximum terminal velocity of $v_{\infty}=-0.43\pm0.03c$, one of the fastest known winds in a nearby AGN. As a result, the inferred mass outflow rate of the wind may reach a significant fraction of the Eddington accretion rate., Comment: 15 pages, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

[Abridged] ESO 141-G55 is a nearby X-ray bright BLS1, which has been classified as a bare AGN due to the lack of warm absorption along its line-of-sight, providing an unhampered view into its disc-corona system. We aim to probe its disc-corona system thanks to the first simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observation obtained on October 1-2, 2022. We carry out the X-ray broadband spectral analysis to determine the dominant process(es) at work, as well as the SED analysis to determine the disc-corona properties. The simultaneous broadband X-ray spectrum of ESO 141-G55 is characterised by the presence of a prominent smooth soft X-ray excess, a broad Fe K emission line and a significant Compton hump. The RGS spectra confirmed the lack of intrinsic warm-absorbing gas along our line of sight in the AGN rest frame, confirming that it is still in a bare state. However, soft X-ray emission lines are observed indicating substantial warm gas out of our line of sight. The intermediate inclination of the disc-corona system, ~43{\deg}, may offer us a favourable configuration to observe UFOs from the disc, but none is found in this 2022 observation, contrary to a previous 2007 XMM-Newton one. Relativistic reflection alone on a standard disc is ruled out from the X-ray broadband analysis, while a combination of soft and hard Comptonisation by a warm and hot corona (relagn), plus relativistic reflection (reflkerrd) reproduces its SED quite well. The hot corona temperature is very hot, ~140 keV, much higher than about 80% of the AGNs, whereas the warm corona temperature, ~0.3 keV, is similar to the values found in other sub-Eddington AGNs. ESO 141-G55 is accreting at a moderate Eddington accretion rate (~10--20%). [Abridged] The X-ray broadband spectra of the bare AGN Mrk 110, obtained by simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations (Nov 2019 and April 2020), are characterised by the presence of a prominent and absorption-free smooth soft X-ray excess, moderately broad OVII and Fe Kalpha emission lines, and a lack of a strong Compton hump. While relativistic reflection as the sole emission is ruled out, a simplified combination of soft and hard Comptonisation from a warm and a hot coronae, plus mild relativistic disc reflection reproduces the data very well. We aim to confirm the physical origin of the soft X-ray excess of Mrk 110 and to determine its disc-corona system properties from its energetics using two new sophisticated models: reXcor and relagn, respectively. At both epochs, the inferred high-values of the warm-corona heating from the X-ray broadband spectral analysis using reXcor confirm that the soft X-ray excess originates mainly from a warm corona rather than relativistic reflection. The intrinsic best-fit SED determined at both epochs using relagn show a high X-ray contribution relative to the UV and are very well reproduced by a warm and hot coronae plus mild relativistic reflection. The outer radii of the hot and warm coronae are located at a few 10s and ~100 Rg, respectively. Moreover, combining the inferred low Eddington ratio (~ a few %) from this work, and previous multi-wavelength spectral and timing studies suggests that Mrk 110 could be classified as a moderate changing-state AGN. Our analysis confirms the existence of a warm corona as a significant contribution to the soft X-ray excess and UV emission in Mrk 110, adding to growing evidence that AGN accretion deviates from standard disc theory. PG 1448+273 is a luminous, nearby ($z=0.0645$), narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy, which likely accretes close to the Eddington limit. XMM-Newton observations of PG 1448+273 in 2017 revealed the presence of an ultra fast outflow, as seen through its blueshifted iron K absorption profile, with an outflow velocity of about $0.1c$. Here, the first NuSTAR observation of PG 1448+273, performed in 2022 and coordinated with XMM-Newton is presented, which shows remarkable variability of its ultra fast outflow. The average count rate is a factor of 2 lower during the last 60 ks of the NuSTAR observation, where a much faster component of the ultra fast outflow was detected with a terminal velocity of $0.26\pm0.04c$. This is significantly faster than the outflow component which was initially detected in 2017, when overall PG 1448+273 was observed at a lower X-ray flux and which implies an order of magnitude increase in the wind kinetic power between the 2017 and 2022 epochs. Furthermore, the rapid variability of the ultra fast outflow in 2022, on timescales down to 10 ks, suggests we are viewing through a highly inhomogeneous disk wind in PG 1448+273, where the passage of a denser wind clump could account for the increase in obscuration in the last 60 ks of the NuSTAR observation., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Photometric reverberation mapping can detect the radial extent of the accretion disc (AD) in Active Galactic Nuclei by measuring the time delays between light curves observed in different continuum bands. Quantifying the constraints on the efficiency and accuracy of the delay measurements is important for recovering the AD size-luminosity relation, and potentially using quasars as standard candles. We have explored the possibility of determining the AD size of quasars using next-generation Big Data surveys. We focus on the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which will observe several thousand quasars with the Deep Drilling Fields and up to 10 million quasars for the main survey in six broadband filter during its 10-year operational lifetime. We have developed extensive simulations that take into account the characteristics of the LSST survey and the intrinsic properties of the quasars. The simulations are used to characterise the light curves from which AD sizes are determined using various algorithms. We find that the time delays can be recovered with an accuracy of 5 and 15% for light curves with a time sampling of 2 and 5 days, respectively. The results depend strongly on the redshift of the source and the relative contribution of the emission lines to the bandpasses. We explore the accretion geometry in Arakelian 120 using intensive UV and X-ray monitoring from \textit{Swift}. The hard X-rays ($1-10$ keV) show large amplitude, fast (few-day) variability, so we expect reverberation from the disc to produce UV variability from the varying hard X-ray illumination. We model the spectral energy distribution including an outer standard disc (optical), an intermediate warm Comptonisation region (UV and soft X-ray) and a hot corona (hard X-rays). Unlike the lower Eddington fraction AGN (NGC 4151 and NGC 5548 at $L/L_{Edd}\sim 0.02$ and $0.03$ respectively), the SED of Akn 120 ($L\sim 0.05L_{Edd}$) is dominated by the UV, restricting the impact of reverberating hard X-rays by energetics alone. Illumination from a hard X-ray corona with height $\sim10 R_g$ produces minimal UV variability. Increasing the coronal scale height to $\sim 100 R_g$ improves the match to the observed amplitude of UV variability as the disc subtends a larger solid angle, but results in too much fast variability to match the UV data. The soft X-rays (connected to the UV in the warm Comptonisation model) are more variable than the hard, but again contain too much fast variability to match the observed smoother variability seen in the UV. Results on lower Eddington fraction AGN have emphasised the contribution from reverberation from larger scales (the broad line region), but reverberation induces lags on similar timescales to the smoothing, producing a larger delay than is compatible with the data. We conclude that the majority of the UV variability is therefore intrinsic, connected to mass accretion rate fluctuations in the warm Comptonisation region., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

We have measured the wavelength-dependent lags between the X-ray, UV and optical bands in the high accretion rate ($L/L_{\rm Edd}\approx40\%$) Active Galactic Nucleus Mrk 110 during two intensive monitoring campaigns in February and September 2019. We divide the observations into three intervals with different X-ray luminosities. The first interval, already published in Vincentelli et al. (2021), has the lowest X-ray luminosity and did not exhibit the U-band excess positive lag, or the X-ray excess negative lag that is seen in most AGN. However, these excess lags are seen in the two subsequent intervals of higher X-ray luminosity. Although the data are limited, the excess lags appear to scale with X-ray luminosity. Our modelling shows that lags expected from reprocessing of X-rays by the accretion disc vary hardly at all with increasing luminosity. Therefore, as the U-band excess almost certainly arises from Balmer continuum emission from the broad line region (BLR), we attribute these lag changes to changes in the contribution from the BLR. The change is easily explained by the usual increase in the inner radius of the BLR with increasing ionising luminosity., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Accretion disc theory predicts that an AGN disc becomes self-gravitating and breaks up into stars at an outer radius $R_{\rm sg}$ ~ 12 light-days, with effectively no free parameter. We present evidence that the longer observed AGN light echoes are all close to 12d in the AGN rest frames. These observations give a stringent test of AGN disc theory. Further monitoring should offer insight into the formation angular momentum of the gas forming the disc. Short-term variability and multiple velocity components in the powerful highly ionized wind of the archetypal UFO PG1211+143 are indicative of inner disc instabilities or short-lived accretion events. The recent detection of a high velocity inflow offered the first direct observational support for the latter scenario, where matter approaching at a high inclination to the black hole spin plane may result in warping and tearing of the inner accretion disc, with subsequent inter-ring collisions producing shocks, loss of rotational support and rapid mass infall. Here we identify a variable continuum component in the same data set, well-modelled by a hot thermal Comptonised spectrum that could represent cooling radiation from the shocked gas., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, submitted to MNRAS

(Abridged) Soft and hard X-ray excesses, compared to the continuum power-law shape between ~2-10 keV, are common features observed in the spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and are associated with the accretion disc-corona system around the supermassive black hole. However, the dominant process at work is still highly debated and has been proposed to be either relativistic reflection or Comptonisation. We aim to characterise the main X-ray spectral physical components from the bright bare Broad Line Seyfert 1 AGN Mrk 110, and the physical process(es) at work in its disc-corona system viewed almost face-on. We perform the X-ray broad-band spectral analysis thanks to two simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations performed on November 16-17 2019 and April 5-6 2020, we also use for the spectral analysis above 3 keV the deep NuSTAR observation obtained in January 2017. The broad-band X-ray spectra of Mrk 110 are characterised by the presence of a prominent and absorption-free smooth soft X-ray excess, moderately broad OVII and FeKalpha emission lines and a lack of a strong Compton hump. The continuum above ~3keV is very similar at both epochs, while some variability (stronger when brighter) is present for the soft X-ray excess. A combination of soft and hard Comptonisation by a warm and hot corona, respectively, plus mildly relativistic disc reflection reproduce the broadband X-ray continuum very well. The inferred warm corona temperature, kT_warm~0.3 keV, is similar to the values found in other sub-Eddington AGN, whereas the hot corona temperature, kT_hot~21-31 keV (depending mainly on the assumed hot corona geometry), is found to be in the lower range of the values measured in AGN., Comment: 11 pages (including appendix), 8 figures. Six XMM-Newton observations of the bright narrow line Seyfert 1, Mrk 110, from 2004-2020, are presented. The analysis of the grating spectra from the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) reveals a broad component of the He-like Oxygen (OVII) line, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $15900\pm1800$ km s$^{-1}$ measured in the mean spectrum. The broad OVII line in all six observations can be modelled with a face-on accretion disk profile, where from these profiles the inner radius of the line emission is inferred to lie between about 20-100 gravitational radii from the black hole. The derived inclination angle, of about 10 degrees, is consistent with studies of the optical Broad Line Region in Mrk 110. The line also appears variable and for the first time, a significant correlation is measured between the OVII flux and the continuum flux from both the RGS and EPIC-pn data. Thus the line responds to the continuum, being brightest when the continuum flux is highest, similar to the reported behaviour of the optical HeII line. The density of the line emitting gas is estimated to be $n_{\rm e}\sim10^{14}$ cm$^{-3}$, consistent with an origin in the accretion disk., Comment: 8 pages (including appendix), 8 figures. Recently, research on mental health conditions using public online data, including Reddit, has surged in NLP and health research but has not reported user characteristics, which are important to judge generalisability of findings. This paper shows how existing NLP methods can yield information on clinical, demographic, and identity characteristics of almost 20K Reddit users who self-report a bipolar disorder diagnosis. This population consists of slightly more feminine- than masculine-gendered mainly young or middle-aged US-based adults who often report additional mental health diagnoses, which is compared with general Reddit statistics and epidemiological studies. We present an improved model for excess variance spectra describing ultra-fast outflows and successfully apply it to the luminous (L ~ 10^47 erg/s) low-redshift (z = 0.184) quasar PDS 456. The model is able to account well for the broadening of the spike-like features of these outflows in the excess variance spectrum of PDS 456, by considering two effects: a correlation between the outflow velocity and the logarithmic X-ray flux and intrinsic Doppler broadening with v_int = 10^4 km/s. The models were generated by calculating the fractional excess variance of count spectra from a Monte Carlo simulation. We find evidence that the outflow in PDS 456 is structured, i.e., that there exist two or more layers with outflow velocities 0.27-0.30 c, 0.41-0.49 c, and 0.15-0.20 c for a possible third layer, which agrees well with the literature. We discuss the prospects of generally applicable models for excess variance spectra for detecting ultra-fast outflows and investigating their structure. We provide an estimate for the strength of the correlation between the outflow velocity and the logarithmic X-ray flux and investigate its validity.

New Swift monitoring observations of the variable, radio-quiet quasar, PDS 456, are presented. A bright X-ray flare was captured in September 2018, the flux increasing by a factor of 4 and with a doubling time-scale of 2 days. From the light crossing argument, the coronal size is inferred to be about 30 gravitational radii for a black hole mass of $10^{9} {\rm M}_{\odot}$ and the total flare energy exceeds $10^{51}$ erg. A hardening of the X-ray emission accompanied the flare, with the photon index decreasing from $\Gamma=2.2$ to $\Gamma=1.7$ and back again. The flare is produced in the X-ray corona, the lack of any optical or UV variability being consistent with a constant accretion rate. Simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations were performed, $1-3$ days after the flare peak and during the decline phase. These caught PDS 456 in a bright, bare state, where no disc wind absorption features are apparent. The hard X-ray spectrum shows a high energy roll-over, with an e-folding energy of $E_{\rm fold}=51^{+11}_{-8}$ keV. The deduced coronal temperature, of $kT=13$ keV, is one of the coolest measured in any AGN and PDS 456 lies well below the predicted pair annihilation line in X-ray corona. The spectral variability, becoming softer when fainter following the flare, is consistent with models of cooling X-ray coronae. Alternatively, an increase in a non-thermal component could contribute towards the hard X-ray flare spectrum., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations of the bright, variable quasar IRAS 13349+2438. This combined dataset shows two clear iron absorption lines at 8 and 9 keV, which are most likely associated with two layers of mildly relativistic blueshifted absorption, with velocities of 0.14c and 0.27c. We also find strong evidence for a series of Ly$\alpha$ absorption lines at intermediate energies in a stacked XMM-Newton EPIC-pn spectrum, at the same blueshift as the lower velocity iron feature. This is consistent with a scenario where an outflowing wind is radially stratified, so faster, higher ionization material is observed closer to the black hole, and cooler, slower material is seen from streamlines at larger radii., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS letters

We present joint \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{NuSTAR} observations of the `bare' narrow line Seyfert 1 Ton S180 ($z=0.062$), carried out in 2016 and providing the first hard X-ray view of this luminous galaxy. We find that the 0.4--30 keV band cannot be self-consistently reproduced by relativistic reflection models, which fail to account simultaneously for the soft and hard X-ray emission. The smooth soft excess prefers extreme blurring parameters, confirmed by the nearly featureless nature of the RGS spectrum, while the moderately broad Fe K line and the modest hard excess above 10 keV appear to arise in a milder gravity regime. By allowing a different origin of the soft excess, the broadband X-ray spectrum and overall spectral energy distribution (SED) are well explained by a combination of: (a) direct thermal emission from the accretion disc, dominating from the optical to the far/extreme UV; (b) Comptonization of seed disc photons by a warm ($kT_{\rm e}\sim0.3$ keV) and optically thick ($\tau\sim10$) corona, mostly contributing to the soft X-rays; (c) Comptonization by a standard hot ($kT_{\rm e} \gtrsim 100$ keV) and optically thin ($\tau<0.5$) corona, responsible for the primary X-ray continuum; and (d) reflection from the mid/outer part of the disc. The two coronae are suggested to be rather compact, with $R_{\rm hot} \lesssim R_{\rm warm} \lesssim 10$ R$_{\rm g}$. Our SED analysis implies that Ton S180 accretes at super-Eddington rates. This is a key condition for the launch of a wind, marginal (i.e., 3.1$\sigma$ significance) evidence of which is indeed found in the RGS spectrum., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. We present a series of X-ray variability results from a long XMM-Newton + NuSTAR campaign on the bright, variable AGN NGC 3227. We present an analysis of the lightcurves, showing that the source displays typically softer-when-brighter behaviour, although also undergoes significant spectral hardening during one observation which we interpret as due to an occultation event by a cloud of absorbing gas. We spectrally decompose the data and show that the bulk of the variability is continuum-driven and, through rms variability analysis, strongly enhanced in the soft band. We show that the source largely conforms to linear rms-flux behaviour and we compute X-ray power spectra, detecting moderate evidence for a bend in the power spectrum, consistent with existing scaling relations. Additionally, we compute X-ray Fourier time lags using both the XMM-Newton and - through maximum-likelihood methods - NuSTAR data, revealing a strong low-frequency hard lag and evidence for a soft lag at higher frequencies, which we discuss in terms of reverberation models., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 19 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables; minor typographical errors corrected and reference list updated

We report on the results of a multiwavelength monitoring campaign of the bright, nearby Seyfert galaxy, Ark 120 using a ~50-day observing programme with Swift and a ~4-month co-ordinated ground-based observing campaign, predominantly using the Skynet Robotic Telescope Network. We find Ark 120 to be variable at all optical, UV, and X-ray wavelengths, with the variability observed to be well-correlated between wavelength bands on short timescales. We perform cross-correlation analysis across all available wavelength bands, detecting time delays between emission in the X-ray band and the Swift V, B and UVW1 bands. In each case, we find that the longer-wavelength emission is delayed with respect to the shorter-wavelength emission. Within our measurement uncertainties, the time delays are consistent with the \tau ~ \lambda^{4/3} relation, as predicted by a disc reprocessing scenario. The measured lag centroids are \tau_{cent} = 11.90 +/- 7.33, 10.80 +/- 4.08, and 10.60 +/- 2.87 days between the X-ray and V, B, and UVW1 bands, respectively. These time delays are longer than those expected from standard accretion theory and, as such, Ark 120 may be another example of an active galaxy whose accretion disc appears to exist on a larger scale than predicted by the standard thin-disc model. Additionally, we detect further inter-band time delays: most notably between the ground-based I and B bands (\tau_{cent} = 3.46 +/- 0.86 days), and between both the Swift XRT and UVW1 bands and the I band (\tau_{cent} = 12.34 +/- 4.83 and 2.69 +/- 2.05 days, respectively), highlighting the importance of co-ordinated ground-based optical observations., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

[Abridged] In our previous work on Ark 120, we found that its 2014 X-ray spectrum is dominated by Comptonisation, while the relativistic reflection emission only originates at tens of $R_{\rm g}$ from the SMBH. As a result, we could not constrain the SMBH spin from disc reflection alone. Our aim is to determine its SMBH spin from an alternative technique based on the global energetics of the disc-corona system. The spectral analysis uses simultaneous XMM-Newton (OM and pn) and NuSTAR observations on 2014 March 22 and 2013 February 18. We applied the optxconv model (based on optxagnf) to self consistently reproduce the emission from the inner corona (warm and hot thermal Comptonisation) and the outer disc (colour temperature corrected black body), taking into account both the disc inclination angle and relativistic effects. We modelled the mild relativistic reflection of the incident Comptonisation components using the xilconv model. We infer a SMBH spin of 0.83$^{+0.05}_{-0.03}$, adopting the SMBH reverberation mass of 1.50$\times$10$^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$. In addition, we find that the coronal radius decreases with increasing flux (by about a factor of two), from 85$^{+13}_{-10}$ $R_{\rm g}$ in 2013 to 14$\pm$3 $R_{\rm g}$ in 2014. This is the first time that such a constraint is obtained for a SMBH spin from this technique, thanks to the bare properties of Ark 120, its well determined SMBH mass, and the presence of a mild relativistic reflection component in 2014 which allows us to constrain the disc inclination angle. We caution that these results depend on the detailed disc-corona structure, which is not yet fully established. The spectral shape of the hard X-ray continuum of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) can be ascribed to inverse Compton scattering of optical/UV seed photons from the accretion disc by a hot corona of electrons. This physical process produces a polarization signal which is strongly sensitive to the geometry of the scattering medium (i.e. the hot corona) and of the radiation field. MoCA (Monte Carlo code for Comptonisation in Astrophysics) is a versatile code which allows for different geometries and configurations to be tested for Compton scattering in compact objects. A single photon approach is considered as well as polarisation and Klein-Nishina effects. In this work, we selected four different geometries for the scattering electrons cloud above the accretion disc, namely an extended slab, an extended spheroid and two compact spheroids. We discuss the first application of the MoCA model to reproduce the hard X-ray primary continuum of the bare Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 120, using different geometries for the hot corona above the accretion disc. We report on the spectral analysis of the simultaneous 2013 and 2014 XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the source. A general agreement is found between the best fit values of the hot coronal parameters obtained with MoCA and the ones inferred using other Comptonisation codes from the literature. The expected polarization signal from the best fits with MoCA is then presented and discussed, in view of the launch in 2021 of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). We find that none of the tested geometries for the hot corona (extended slab and extended/compact spheroids) can be statistically preferred, based on spectroscopy solely. In the future, an IXPE observation less than 1 Ms long will clearly distinguish between an extended slab or a spherical hot corona., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

Simultaneous XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and HST observations, performed in March 2017, of the nearby ($z=0.184$) luminous quasar PDS 456 are presented. PDS 456 had a low X-ray flux compared to past observations, where the first of the two new XMM-Newton observations occurred during a pronounced dip in the X-ray lightcurve. The broad-band X-ray spectrum is highly absorbed, attenuated by a soft X-ray absorber of column density $N_{\rm H}=6\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. An increase in obscuration occurs during the dip, which may be due to an X-ray eclipse. In addition, the persistent, fast Fe K outflow is present, with velocity components of $-0.25c$ and $-0.4c$. The soft absorber is less ionized ($\log\xi=3$) compared to the iron K outflow ($\log\xi=5$) and is outflowing with a velocity of approximately $-0.2c$. A soft X-ray excess is present below 1 keV against the highly absorbed continuum and can be attributed to the re-emission from a wide angle wind. The complex X-ray absorption present in PDS 456 suggests that the wind is inhomogeneous, whereby the soft X-ray absorber originates from denser clumps or filaments which may form further out along the outflow. In contrast to the X-ray observations, the simultaneous UV spectrum of PDS 456 is largely unabsorbed, where only a very weak broad absorption trough is present bluewards of Ly$\alpha$, compared to a past observation in 2000 when the trough was significantly stronger. The relative weakness of the UV absorption may be due to the soft X-ray absorber being too highly ionized and almost transparent in the UV band., Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

NGC 3227 exhibits rapid flux and spectral variability in the X-ray band. To understand this behaviour we conducted a co-ordinated observing campaign using 320 ks of XMM-Newton exposures together with 160 ks of overlapping NuSTAR observations, spanning a month. Here, we present a rapid variability event that occurs toward the end of the campaign. The spectral hardening event is accompanied by a change in the depth of an unresolved transition array, whose time-dependent behaviour is resolved using the RGS data. This UTA fingerprint allows us to identify this as a transit event, where a clump of gas having NH ~ 5 x 10^22 atoms/ cm^2, log xi ~2 occults ~60% of the continuum photons over the course of approximately a day. This occulting gas is likely associated with clouds in the inner BLR. An additional zone of gas with lower column and higher ionization, matches the outflow velocity of the variable zone, and may represent transmission through the cloud limb., Comment: 10 pages. Blueshifted absorption lines in the X-ray spectra of AGN show that ultra-fast outflows with typical velocities $v \sim 0.1c$ are a common feature of these luminous objects. Such powerful AGN winds offer an explanation of the observed M-$\sigma$ relation linking the mass of the supermassive black hole and the velocity dispersion in the galaxy's stellar bulge. An extended XMM-Newton study of the luminous Seyfert galaxy PG1211+143 recently revealed a variable multi-velocity wind. Here we report the detection of a short-lived, ultra-fast inflow during the same observation. Previous reports of inflows used single absorption lines with uncertain identifications, but this new result identifies an array of resonance absorption lines of highly ionised Fe, Ca, Ar, S and Si, sharing a common redshift when compared with a grid of realistic photoionization spectra. The redshifted absorption arises in a column of highly ionized matter close to the black hole, with a line-of-sight velocity, $v \sim 0.3c$, inconsistent with the standard picture of a plane circular accretion disc. This may represent the first direct evidence for chaotic accretion in AGN, where accretion discs are generally misaligned to the black hole spin. For sufficient inclinations, the Lense-Thirring effect can break the discs into discrete rings, which then precess, collide and shock, causing near free-fall of gas towards the black hole. The observed accretion rate for the reported infall is comparable to the hard X-ray luminosity in PG1211+143, suggesting that direct infall may be a significant contributor to inner disc accretion., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Past X-ray observations of the nearby luminous quasar PDS 456 (at $z=0.184$) have revealed a wide angle accretion disk wind (Nardini et al. 2015), with an outflow velocity of $\sim-0.25c$. Here we unveil a new, relativistic component of the wind through hard X-ray observations with NuSTAR and XMM-Newton, obtained in March 2017 when the quasar was in a low flux state. This very fast wind component, with an outflow velocity of $-0.46\pm0.02c$, is detected in the iron K band, in addition to the $-0.25c$ wind zone. The relativistic component may arise from the innermost disk wind, launched from close to the black hole at radius of $\sim10$ gravitational radii. The opacity of the fast wind also increases during a possible obscuration event lasting for 50 ks. We suggest that the very fast wind may only be apparent during the lowest X-ray flux states of PDS 456, becoming overly ionized as the luminosity increases. We investigate the X-ray time lags of a recent ~630ks XMM-Newton observation of PG 1211+143. We find well-correlated variations across the XMM-Newton EPIC bandpass, with the first detection of a hard lag in this source with a mean time delay of up to ~3ks at the lowest frequencies. We find that the energy-dependence of the low-frequency hard lag scales approximately linearly with log(E) when averaged over all orbits, consistent with the propagating fluctuations model. However, we find that the low-frequency lag behaviour becomes more complex on timescales longer than a single orbit, suggestive of additional modes of variability. We also detect a high-frequency soft lag at ~10^{-4}Hz with the magnitude of the delay peaking at <0.8ks, consistent with previous observations, which we discuss in terms of small-scale reverberation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 10 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

The analysis of a series of seven observations of the nearby ($z=0.0809$) QSO, PG 1211+143, taken with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on-board XMM-Newton in 2014, are presented. The high resolution soft X-ray spectrum, with a total exposure exceeding 600 ks, shows a series of blue-shifted absorption lines, from the He and H-like transitions of N, O and Ne, as well as from L-shell Fe. The strongest absorption lines are all systematically blue-shifted by $-0.06c$, originating in two absorption zones, from low and high ionization gas. Both zones are variable on timescales of days, with the variations in absorber opacity effectively explained by either column density changes or by the absorber ionization responding directly to the continuum flux. We find that the soft X-ray absorbers probably exist in a two-phase wind, at a radial distance of $10^{17}-10^{18}$ cm from the black hole, with the lower ionization gas as denser clumps embedded within a higher ionization outflow. The overall mass outflow rate of the soft X-ray wind may be as high as $2{\rm M}_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, close to the Eddington rate for PG 1211+143 and similar to that previously deduced from the Fe K absorption., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present a newly discovered correlation between the wind outflow velocity and the X-ray luminosity in the luminous ($L_{\rm bol}\sim10^{47}\,\rm erg\,s^{-1}$) nearby ($z=0.184$) quasar PDS\,456. All the contemporary XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and Suzaku observations from 2001--2014 were revisited and we find that the centroid energy of the blueshifted Fe\,K absorption profile increases with luminosity. This translates into a correlation between the wind outflow velocity and the hard X-ray luminosity (between 7--30\,keV) where we find that $v_{\rm w}/c \propto L_{7-30}^{\gamma}$ where $\gamma=0.22\pm0.04$. We also show that this is consistent with a wind that is predominately radiatively driven, possibly resulting from the high Eddington ratio of PDS\,456., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. We perform an X-ray spectral analysis of the brightest and cleanest bare AGN known so far, Ark 120, in order to determine the process(es) at work in the vicinity of the SMBH. We present spectral analysis of data from an extensive campaign observing Ark 120 in X-rays with XMM-Newton (4$\times$120 ks, 2014 March 18-24), and NuSTAR (65.5 ks, 2014 March 22). During this very deep X-ray campaign, the source was caught in a high flux state similar to the earlier 2003 XMM-Newton observation, and about twice as bright as the lower-flux observation in 2013. The spectral analysis confirms the "softer when brighter" behaviour of Ark 120. The four XMM-Newton/pn spectra are characterized by the presence of a prominent soft X-ray excess and a significant FeK$\alpha$ complex. The continuum is very similar above about 3 keV, while significant variability is present for the soft X-ray excess. We find that relativistic reflection from a constant-density, flat accretion disk cannot simultaneously produce the soft excess, broad FeK$\alpha$ complex, and hard X-ray excess. Instead, Comptonization reproduces the broadband (0.3-79 keV) continuum well, together with a contribution from a mildly relativistic disk reflection spectrum. During this 2014 observational campaign, the soft X-ray spectrum of Ark 120 below $\sim$0.5 keV was found to be dominated by Comptonization of seed photons from the disk by a warm ($kT_{\rm e}$$\sim$0.5 keV), optically-thick corona ($\tau$$\sim$9). Above this energy, the X-ray spectrum becomes dominated by Comptonization from electrons in a hot optically thin corona, while the broad FeK$\alpha$ line and the mild Compton hump result from reflection off the disk at several tens of gravitational radii., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present the spectral/timing properties of the bare Seyfert galaxy Ark 120 through a deep ~420ks XMM-Newton campaign plus recent NuSTAR observations and a ~6-month Swift monitoring campaign. We investigate the spectral decomposition through fractional rms, covariance and difference spectra, finding the mid- to long-timescale (~day-year) variability to be dominated by a relatively smooth, steep component, peaking in the soft X-ray band. Additionally, we find evidence for variable FeK emission red-ward of the FeK-alpha core on long timescales, consistent with previous findings. We detect a clearly-defined power spectrum which we model with a power law with a slope of alpha ~ 1.9. By extending the power spectrum to lower frequencies through the inclusion of Swift and RXTE data, we find tentative evidence of a high-frequency break, consistent with existing scaling relations. We also explore frequency-dependent Fourier time lags, detecting a negative ('soft') lag for the first time in this source with the 0.3-1 keV band lagging behind the 1-4 keV band with a time delay of ~900s. Finally, we analyze the variability in the optical and UV bands using the Optical/UV Monitor on-board XMM-Newton and the UVOT on-board Swift and search for time-dependent correlations between the optical/UV/X-ray bands. We find tentative evidence for the U-band emission lagging behind the X-rays with a time delay of 2.4 +/- 1.8 days, which we discuss in the context of disc reprocessing., Comment: 23 pages, 20 figures, 6 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

High resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the warm absorber in the nearby X-ray bright Seyfert 1 galaxy, Mrk 1040 is presented. The observations were carried out in the 2013-2014 timeframe using the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating with a total exposure of 200 ks. A multitude of absorption lines from Ne, Mg and Si are detected from a wide variety of ionization states. In particular, the detection of inner K-shell absorption lines from Ne, Mg and Si, from charge states ranging from F-like to Li-like ions, suggests the presence of a substantial amount of low ionization absorbing gas, illuminated by a steep soft X-ray continuum. The observations reveal at least 3 warm absorbing components ranging in ionization parameter from $\log\xi = 0-2$ and with column densities of $N_{\rm H} =1.5-4.0 \times 10^{21}$cm$^{-2}$. The velocity profiles imply that the outflow velocities of the absorbing gas are low and within $\pm100$ km s$^{-1}$ of the systemic velocity of Mrk 1040, which suggests any outflowing gas may have stalled in this AGN on large enough scales. The warm absorber is likely located far from the black hole, within 300 pc of the nucleus and is spatially coincident with emission from an extended Narrow Line Region as seen in the HST images. The iron K band spectrum reveals only narrow emission lines, with Fe K$\alpha$ at 6.4 keV consistent with originating from reflection off Compton thick pc-scale reprocessing gas., Comment: 40 pages, including 12 figures. 15 years of XMM-Newton observations have established that ultra-fast, highly ionized winds are common in radio-quiet AGN. A simple theory of Eddington-limited accretion correctly predicts the typical velocity (~0.1c) and high ionization of such winds, with observed flow energy capable of ejecting star-forming gas. We report on the results from a large observational campaign on the bare Seyfert galaxy Ark 120, jointly carried out in 2014 with XMM-Newton, Chandra, and NuSTAR. The fortunate line of sight to this source, devoid of any significant absorbing material, provides an incomparably clean view to the nuclear regions of an active galaxy. Here we focus on the analysis of the iron fluorescence features, which form a composite emission pattern in the 6$-$7 keV band. The prominent K$\alpha$ line from neutral iron at 6.4 keV is resolved in the Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating spectrum to a full-width at half maximum of 4700$^{+2700}_{-1500}$ km s$^{-1}$, consistent with an origin from the optical broad-line region. Excess components are detected on both sides of the narrow K$\alpha$ line: the red one (6.0$-$6.3 keV) clearly varies in strength in about one year, and hints at the presence of a broad, mildly asymmetric line from the accretion disk; the blue one (6.5$-$7.0 keV), instead, is likely a blend of different contributions, and appears to be constant when integrated over long enough exposures. However, the Fe K excess emission map computed over the 7.5 days of the XMM-Newton monitoring shows that both the red and the blue features are actually highly variable on timescales of $\sim$10$-$15 hours, suggesting that they might arise from short-lived hotspots on the disk surface, located within a few tens of gravitational radii from the central supermassive black hole and possibly illuminated by magnetic reconnection events. Any alternative explanation would still require a highly dynamic, inhomogeneous disk/coronal system, involving clumpiness and/or instability., Comment: 25 pages, 10+2 figures, 5 tables. We analyze the broad-band X-ray spectrum (0.3-50 keV) of the luminous Seyfert 1 / quasar PG 1211+143 - the archetypal source for high-velocity X-ray outflows - using near-simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations. We compare pure relativistic reflection models with a model including the strong imprint of photoionized emission and absorption from a high-velocity wind (Pounds16a,16b), finding a spectral fit that extrapolates well over the higher photon energies covered by NuSTAR. Inclusion of the high S/N XMM-Newton spectrum provides much tighter constraints on the model parameters, with a much harder photon index / lower reflection fraction compared to that from the NuSTAR data alone. We show that pure relativistic reflection models are not able to account for the spectral complexity of PG 1211+143 and that wind absorption models are strongly required to match the data in both the soft X-ray and Fe K spectral regions. The Seyfert 1 galaxy, Ark 120, is a prototype example of the so-called class of bare nucleus AGN, whereby there is no known evidence for the presence of ionized gas along the direct line of sight. Here deep ($>400$ ks exposure), high resolution X-ray spectroscopy of Ark 120 is presented, from XMM-Newton observations which were carried out in March 2014, together with simultaneous Chandra/HETG exposures. The high resolution spectra confirmed the lack of intrinsic absorbing gas associated with Ark 120, with the only X-ray absorption present originating from the ISM of our own Galaxy, with a possible slight enhancement of the Oxygen abundance required with respect to the expected ISM values in the Solar neighbourhood. However, the presence of several soft X-ray emission lines are revealed for the first time in the XMM-Newton RGS spectrum, associated to the AGN and arising from the He and H-like ions of N, O, Ne and Mg. The He-like line profiles of N, O and Ne appear velocity broadened, with typical FWHM widths of $\sim5000$ km s$^{-1}$, whereas the H-like profiles are unresolved. From the clean measurement of the He-like triplets, we deduce that the broad lines arise from gas of density $n_{\rm e}\sim10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$, while the photoionization calculations infer that the emitting gas covers at least 10 percent of $4\pi$ steradian. Thus the broad soft X-ray profiles appear coincident with an X-ray component of the optical-UV Broad Line Region on sub-pc scales, whereas the narrow profiles originate on larger pc scales, perhaps coincident with the AGN Narrow Line Region. The observations show that Ark 120 is not intrinsically bare and substantial X-ray emitting gas exists out of our direct line of sight towards this AGN., Comment: 42 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

An extended XMM-Newton observation of the luminous narrow line Seyfert galaxy PG 1211+143 in 2014 has revealed a more complex high velocity wind, with components distinguished in velocity, ionization level, and column density. Here we report soft x-ray emission and absorption features from the ionized outflow, finding counterparts of both high velocity components, v ~ 0.129c and v ~ 0.066c, recently identified in the highly ionized Fe K absorption spectrum. An extended XMM-Newton observation of the luminous narrow line Seyfert galaxy PG 1211+143 in 2014 has revealed a more complex highly ionized, high velocity outflow. The detection of previously unresolved spectral structure in Fe K absorption finds a second outflow velocity component of the highly ionized wind, with an outflow velocity of v~0.066+/-0.003c, in addition to a still higher velocity outflow of v~0.129+/-0.002c consistent with that first seen in 2001. We note that chaotic accretion, consisting of many prograde and retrograde events, offers an intriguing explanation of the dual velocity wind. In that context the persisting outflow velocities could relate to physically distinct orientations of the inner accretion flow, with prograde accretion yielding a higher launch velocity than retrograde accretion in a ratio close to that observed., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS: 7 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

We report on a timing analysis of a new ~630ks XMM-Newton observation of the quasar, PG 1211+143. We find a well-defined X-ray power spectrum with a well-detected bend at ~7e-5 Hz, consistent with the established bend-timescale--black-hole-mass correlation for luminous, accreting black holes. We find the linear rms-flux relation commonly observed in accreting black hole systems and investigate the energy-dependence of the rms. The fractional rms is roughly constant with energy on short timescales (< 1 day; within observations) whereas there is enhanced soft band variability on long timescales (between observations typically spaced by a few days). Additionally, we also report on the optical--UV variability using the OM on-board XMM-Newton and a ~2-month-long overlapping monitoring programme with Swift. We find that, although there is little UV variability within observations (<1 day), UV variations of a few per cent exist on time-scales of ~days--weeks., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (14 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables)

Using new XMM-Newton observations we detect hard X-ray time lags in the rapid variability of the Compton-thin Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 18325-5926. The higher-energy X-ray variations lag behind correlated lower-energy variations by up to ~3ks and the magnitude of the lag increases clearly with energy separation between the energy bands. We find that the lag-energy spectrum has a relatively simple log(E) shape. This is quite different in both shape and magnitude from the lags predicted by simple reflection models, but very similar to the hard X-ray lags often seen in black hole X-ray binaries. We apply several spectral models to the lag-energy spectrum and rule out simple reflection as an origin for the hard lags. We find that both propagating fluctuations embedded in the accretion flow and electron scattering from material embedded in or behind a cold absorbing medium offer equally good fits to the observed low-frequency hard X-ray lags and are both consistent with the time-averaged spectrum. IRAS 18325-5926 is an X-ray bright, Compton-thin, type-2 Seyfert galaxy and it was the first Seyfert 2 in which the presence of a broad Fe K-alpha emission line was claimed. However, although the structure of the Fe line appears broad, there is tentative evidence that it may comprise multiple lines. Nevertheless, previous analyses have only consisted of fitting standalone broad components to the Fe K band. Here, we have analyzed all available X-ray CCD data from Suzaku, XMM-Newton and ASCA to fully investigate the nature of the emission complex by testing broad-band physical models and alternative hypotheses. We find that both a model consisting of broad, blurred reflection from an ionized accretion disc and a model consisting of cold, neutral reflection plus narrow emission lines from highly-ionized photoionized gas (log \xi = 3.5) offer statistically comparable fits to the data although the true reality of the Fe line cannot currently be determined with existing data. RE J2248-511 is one of only 14 non-blazar AGN detected in the far ultraviolet by the ROSAT Wide Field Camera implying a large ultrasoft X-ray flux. This soft X-ray excess is strongly variable on year timescales, a common property of Narrow Line Seyfert 1s, yet its optical linewidths classify this source as a broad-lined Seyfert 1. We use four nearly simultaneous optical--X-ray SEDs spanning 7 years to study the spectral shape and long term variability of RE J2248-511. Here we show that the continuum SED for the brightest epoch dataset is consistent with the mean SED of a standard quasar, and matches well to that from an XMM-SDSS sample of AGN with ~ 10^8 and ~ 0.2. All the correlated optical and soft X-ray variability can be due entirely to a major absorption event. The only remarkable aspect of this AGN is that there is no measurable intrinsic X-ray absorption column in the brightest epoch dataset. The observed FUV flux is determined by the combination of this and the fact that the source lies within a local absorption `hole'. RE J2248-511, whose variable, ultrasoft X-ray flux once challenged its BLS1 classification, demonstrates that characterisation of such objects requires multi-epoch, multi-wavelength campaigns., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. Understanding the astrophysics of feedback in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is key to understanding the growth and co-evolution of supermassive black holes and galaxies. AGN-driven winds/outflows are potentially the most effective way of transporting energy and momentum from the nuclear scales to the host galaxy, quenching star formation by sweeping away the gas reservoir. Key questions in this field are: 1) how do accretion disks around black holes launch winds/outflows, and how much energy do these carry? 2) How are the energy and metals accelerated in winds/outflows transferred and deposited into the circumgalactic medium? X-ray observations are a unique way to address these questions because they probe the phase of the outflows which carries most of the kinetic energy. We show how a high throughput, high spectral resolution instrument like the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on Athena+ will allow us to address these questions by determining the physical parameters (ionization state, density, temperature, abundances, velocities, geometry, etc.) of the outflows on a dynamical time-scale, in a broad sample of nearby bright AGN. This White Paper, submitted to the recent ESA call for science themes to define its future large missions, advocates the need for a transformational leap in our understanding of two key questions in astrophysics: 1) How does ordinary matter assemble into the large scale structures that we see today? 2) How do black holes grow and shape the Universe? Hot gas in clusters, groups and the intergalactic medium dominates the baryonic content of the local Universe. To understand the astrophysical processes responsible for the formation and assembly of these large structures, it is necessary to measure their physical properties and evolution. This requires spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy with a factor 10 increase in both telescope throughput and spatial resolving power compared to currently planned facilities. Feedback from supermassive black holes is an essential ingredient in this process and in most galaxy evolution models, but it is not well understood. X-ray observations can uniquely reveal the mechanisms launching winds close to black holes and determine the coupling of the energy and matter flows on larger scales. Due to the effects of feedback, a complete understanding of galaxy evolution requires knowledge of the obscured growth of supermassive black holes through cosmic time, out to the redshifts where the first galaxies form. X-ray emission is the most reliable way to reveal accreting black holes, but deep survey speed must improve by a factor ~100 over current facilities to perform a full census into the early Universe. The Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics (Athena+) mission provides the necessary performance (e.g. angular resolution, spectral resolution, survey grasp) to address these questions and revolutionize our understanding of the Hot and Energetic Universe. We construct full broadband models in an analysis of Suzaku observations of nearby Seyfert 1 AGN (z<0.2) with exposures >50ks and with greater than 30000 counts in order to study their iron line profiles. This results in a sample of 46 objects and 84 observations. After a full modelling of the broadband Suzaku and Swift-BAT data (0.6-100 keV) we find complex warm absorption is present in 59% of the objects in this sample which has a significant bearing upon the derived Fe K region parameters. Meanwhile 35% of the 46 objects require some degree of high column density partial coverer in order to fully model the hard X-ray spectrum. We also find that a large number of the objects in the sample (22%) require high velocity, high ionization outflows in the Fe K region resulting from Fe XXV and Fe XXVI. A further four AGN feature highly ionized Fe K absorbers consistent with zero outflow velocity, making a total of 14/46 (30%) AGN in this sample showing evidence for statistically significant absorption in the Fe K region. Narrow Fe K alpha emission from distant material at 6.4 keV is found to be almost ubiquitous in these AGN. Examining the 6-7 keV Fe K region we note that narrow emission lines originating from Fe XXV at 6.63-6.70 keV and from Fe XXVI at 6.97 keV are present in 52% and 39% of objects respectively. Our results suggest statistically significant relativistic Fe K alpha emission is detected in 23 of 46 objects (50%) at >99.5% confidence, measuring an average emissivity index of q=2.4\pm0.1 and equivalent width EW=96\pm10 eV using the relline model. When parameterised with a Gaussian we find an average line energy of 6.32\pm0.04 keV, sigma width=0.470\pm0.05 keV and EW=97\pm19 eV. We present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051. These data were obtained as part of a coordinated observing program including X-ray observations with the Chandra/High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) Spectrometer and Suzaku. We detected nine kinematic components of UV absorption, which were previously identified using the HST/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. None of the absorption components showed evidence for changes in column density or profile within the \sim 10 yr between the STIS and COS observations, which we interpret as evidence of 1) saturation, for the stronger components, or 2) very low densities, i.e., n_H < 1 cm^-3, for the weaker components. After applying a +200 km s^-1 offset to the HETG spectrum, we found that the radial velocities of the UV absorbers lay within the O VII profile. Based on photoionization models, we suggest that, while UV components 2, 5 and 7 produce significant O VII absorption, the bulk of the X-ray absorption detected in the HETG analysis occurs in more highly ionized gas. We present a broad-band analysis of deep Suzaku observations of nearby Seyfert 1 AGN: Fairall 9, MCG--6-30-15, NGC 3516, NGC 3783 and NGC 4051. The use of deep observations (exposures >200 ks) with high S/N allows the complex spectra of these objects to be examined in full, taking into account features such as the soft excess, reflection continuum and complex absorption components. After a self-consistent modelling of the broad-band data (0.6-100.0 keV, also making use of BAT data from Swift), the subtle curvature which may be introduced as a consequence of warm absorbers has a measured affect upon the spectrum at energies >3 keV and the Fe K region. Forming a model (including absorption) of these AGN allows the true extent to which broadened diskline emission is present to be examined and as a result the measurement of accretion disc and black hole parameters which are consistent over the full 0.6-100.0 keV energy range. Fitting relativistic line emission models appear to rule out the presence of maximally spinning black holes in all objects at the 90% confidence level, in particular MCG--6-30-15 at >99.5% confidence. Relativistic Fe K line emission is only marginally required in NGC 3516 and not required in NGC 4051, over the full energy bandpass. Nonetheless, statistically significant broadened 6.4 keV Fe K alpha emission is detected in Fairall 9, MCG--6-30-15 and NGC 3783 yielding black hole spin estimates of a=0.67(+0.10,-0.11), a=0.4(+0.20,-0.12) and a<-0.04 respectively, when fitted with disc emission models., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of a deep 300 ks Chandra HETG observation of the highly variable narrow-line Seyfert Type 1 galaxy NGC 4051. The HETG spectrum reveals 28 significant soft X-ray ionised lines in either emission or absorption; primarily originating from H-like and He-like K-shell transitions of O, Ne, Mg and Si (including higher order lines and strong forbidden emission lines from O VII and Ne IX) plus high ionisation L-shell transitions from Fe XVII to Fe XXII and lower ionisation inner-shell lines (e.g. O VI). Modelling the data with XSTAR requires four distinct ionisation zones for the gas, all outflowing with velocities < 1000 km/s. A selection of the strongest emission/absorption lines appear to be resolved with FWHM of ~600 km/s. We also present the results from a quasi-simultaneous 350 ks Suzaku observation of NGC 4051 where the XIS spectrum reveals strong evidence for blueshifted absorption lines at ~6.8 and ~7.1 keV, consistent with previous findings. Modelling with XSTAR suggests that this is the signature of a highly ionised, high velocity outflow (log \xi ~ 4.1; v ~ -0.02c) which potentially may have a significant effect on the host galaxy environment via feedback. Finally, we also simultaneously model the broad-band 2008 XIS+HXD Suzaku data with archival Suzaku data from 2005 when the source was observed to have entered an extended period of low flux in an attempt to analyse the cause of the long-term spectral variability. We find that we can account for this by allowing for large variations in the normalisation of the intrinsic power-law component which may be interpreted as being due to significant changes in the covering fraction of a Compton-thick partial-coverer obscuring the central continuum emission., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS; 24 pages, 14 figures, 10 tables; typos corrected

We methodically model the broad-band Suzaku spectra of a small sample of six 'bare' Seyfert galaxies: Ark 120, Fairall 9, MCG-02-14-009, Mrk 335, NGC 7469 and SWIFT J2127.4+5654. The analysis of bare Seyferts allows a consistent and physical modelling of AGN due to a weak amount of any intrinsic warm absorption, removing the degeneracy between the spectral curvature due to warm absorption and the red-wing of the Fe K region. Through effective modelling of the broad-band spectrum and investigating the presence of narrow neutral or ionized emission lines and reflection from distant material, we obtain an accurate and detailed description of the Fe K line region using models such as laor, kerrdisk and kerrconv. Results suggest that ionized emission lines at 6.7 keV and 6.97 keV (particularly Fe XXVI) are relatively common and the inclusion of these lines can greatly affect the parameters obtained with relativistic models i.e. spin, emissivity, inner radius of emission and inclination. Moderately broad components are found in all objects, but typically the emission originates from tens of Rg, rather than within <6Rg of the black hole. Results obtained with kerrdisk line profiles suggest an average emissivity of q~2.3 at intermediate spin values with all objects ruling out the presence of a maximally spinning black hole at the 90% confidence level. We present the broad-band 0.6-150 keV Suzaku and Swift BAT spectra of the low luminosity Seyfert galaxy, NGC 7213. The time-averaged continuum emission is well fitted by a single powerlaw of photon index Gamma = 1.75 and from consideration of the Fermi flux limit we constrain the high energy cutoff to be 350 keV < E < 25 MeV. Line emission from both near-neutral iron K_alpha at 6.39 keV and highly ionised iron, from Fe_(xxv) and Fe_(xxvi), is strongly detected in the Suzaku spectrum, further confirming the results of previous observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton. We find the centroid energies for the Fe_(xxv) and Fe_(xxvi) emission to be 6.60 keV and 6.95 keV respectively, with the latter appearing to be resolved in the Suzaku spectrum. We show that the Fe_(xxv) and Fe_(xxvi) emission can result from a highly photo-ionised plasma of column density N_(H) ~ 3 x 10^(23) cm^(-2). A Compton reflection component, e.g., originating from an optically-thick accretion disc or a Compton-thick torus, appears either very weak or absent in this AGN, subtending < 1 sr to the X-ray source, consistent with previous findings. Indeed the absence of either neutral or ionised Compton reflection coupled with the lack of any relativistic Fe K signatures in the spectrum suggests that an inner, optically-thick accretion disc is absent in this source. Instead, the accretion disc could be truncated with the inner regions perhaps replaced by a Compton-thin Radiatively Inefficient Accretion Flow. Thus, the Fe_(xxv) and Fe_(xxvi) emission could both originate in ionised material perhaps at the transition region between the hot, inner flow and the cold, truncated accretion disc on the order of 10^(3) - 10^(4) gravitational radii from the black hole. The origin for the unresolved neutral Fe K_alpha emission is then likely to be further out, perhaps originating in the optical BLR or a Compton-thin pc-scale torus., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

A Suzaku X-ray observation of NGC 4051 taken during 2005 Nov reveals line emission at 5.44 keV in the rest-frame of the galaxy which does not have an obvious origin in known rest-frame atomic transitions. The improvement to the fit statistic when this line is accounted for establishes its reality at >99.9% confidence: we have also verified that the line is detected in the three XIS units independently. Comparison between the data and Monte Carlo simulations shows that the probability of the line being a statistical fluctuation is p < 3.3 x 10^-4. Consideration of three independent line detections in Suzaku data taken at different epochs yields a probability p< 3 x 10^-11 and thus conclusively demonstrates that it cannot be a statistical fluctuation in the data. The new line and a strong component of Fe Ka emission from neutral material are prominent when the source flux is low, during 2005. Spectra from 2008 show evidence for a line consistent with having the same flux and energy as that observed during 2005, but inconsistent with having a constant equivalent width against the observed continuum. The stability of the line flux and energy suggests that it may not arise in transient hotspots, as has been suggested for similar lines in other sources, but could arise from a special location in the reprocessor, such as the inner edge of the accretion disk. Long-exposure Suzaku X-ray observations of the active galaxy NGC 4051 from 2005 and 2008 are analysed, in an attempt to reach a self-consistent understanding of the spectral variability on long timescales and at high time resolution. Principal components analysis and a maximum likelihood method of power spectrum analysis are used. In common with other type I AGN, the spectral variability is dominated by a varying-normalisation power-law component together with a quasi-steady, hard-spectrum offset component that contains Fe K atomic features. NGC 4051 displays a strong excess over a power-law at energies above 20 keV, some fraction of which also appears to vary with the power-law continuum. The fast-timescale power spectrum has a shape consistent with previous determinations, but significant differences are found between the low and high flux states of the source, demonstrating that the power spectrum is non-stationary. Frequency-dependent time lags between the hard and soft bands of up to 970+/-225s are measured. The existence of the observed lags excludes the possibility that the hard spectral component originates as reflection from the inner accretion disk. We instead show that the frequency- and energy-dependent time lags may be explained as reverberation, caused by reflection from a thick shell of material with maximum lags of about 10,000s. If the reflecting material surrounds the AGN, it extends to a distance about 1.5x10^14 cm, 600 gravitational radii, from the illuminating source and the global covering factor is C(g) >~ 0.4, confirming suggestions that type I AGN have high covering factors of absorbing and reflecting material.
