Robotic manipulation of fresh fruits and vegetables, including the grasping of multiple loose items, has a strong industrial need but it still is a challenging task for robotic manipulation. This paper outlines the distinctive manipulation strategies used by humans to pick loose fruits and vegetables with the aim to better adopt them for robotic manipulation of diverse items. In this work we present a first version of a robotic setup designed to pick different single or multiple fresh items, featuring multi-fingered compliant robotic gripper. We analyse human grasping strategies from the perspective of industrial Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) used in the logistic sector. The robotic system was validated using the same KPIs, as well as taking into account human performance and strategies. During the last decade and a half, the new generation spectropolarimeter Narval at Pic du Midi, France allowed the study of weak magnetic fields in cool giant stars that are fairly evolved after main sequence. We present a short summary on the recent knowledge on the magnetic fields and activity in giants situated in the upper right part of the Hertzsprung-Russel (H-R) diagram and discuss on the possible mechanisms for magnetic field generation in the asymptotic giants branch (AGB) and post-AGB stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in Bulgarian Astronomical Journal, volume 42 (2025)

We present high resolution (0.06 A/px) spectroscopic observations of the recurrent nova T Coronae Borealis obtained during the last 1.5 years (September 2022 -- January 2024), with the 2.0m RCC telecope of the Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory, Bulgaria. Double-peaked emission is visible in the H-alpha line after the end of the superactive state. We subtract the red giant contribution and measure the distance between the peaks ($\Delta v_a$) of the line. For the period July 2023 -- January 2024, we find that $\Delta v_a$ is in range $90 < \Delta v_a < 120$ km/s. Assuming that the emission is from the accretion disc around the white dwarf, we find average radius of the accretion disc $R_{disc} = 89 \pm 19$ R$_\odot$, which is approximately equal to the Roche lobe size of the white dwarf. Our results indicate that tidal torque plays an important role but that the disc can extend up to the Roche lobe of the accreting star., Comment: Astronomische Nachrichten (accepted)

We present a detailed long-term study of the single M6 III giant RZ~Ari to obtain direct and simultaneous measurements of the magnetic field, activity indicators, and radial velocity in order to infer the origin of its activity. We study its magnetic activity in the context of stellar evolution, and for this purpose, we also refined its evolutionary status and Li abundance. In general, for the M giants, little is known about the properties of the magnetic activity and its causes. RZ~Ari posses the strongest surface magnetic field of the known Zeeman-detected M giants and is bright enough to allow a deep study of its surface magnetic structure. The results are expected to shed light on the activity mechanism in these stars.

In this note we answer positively a question of Chris Godsil and Karen Meagher on the existence of a 2-design whose block graph has a non-canonical maximum clique without a design structure.

Dielectric losses are one of the key factors limiting the coherence of superconducting qubits. The impact of materials and fabrication steps on dielectric losses can be evaluated using coplanar waveguide (CPW) microwave resonators. Here, we report on superconducting CPW microwave resonators with internal quality factors systematically exceeding 5x106 at high powers and 2x106 (with the best value of 4.4x106) at low power. Such performance is demonstrated for 100-nm-thick aluminum resonators with 7-10.5 um center trace on high-resistivity silicon substrates commonly used in quantum Josephson junction circuits. We investigate internal quality factors of the resonators with both dry and wet aluminum etching, as well as deep and isotropic reactive ion etching of silicon substrate. Josephson junction compatible CPW resonators fabrication process with both airbridges and silicon substrate etching is proposed. Finally, we demonstrate the effect of airbridges positions and extra process steps on the overall dielectric losses. The best quality fa ctors are obtained for the wet etched aluminum resonators and isotropically removed substrate with the proposed ultrasonic metal edge microcutting., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Transposition graph $T_n$ is defined as a Cayley graph over the symmetric group generated by all transpositions. It is known that all eigenvalues of $T_n$ are integers. Moreover, zero is its eigenvalue for any $n\geqslant 4$. But the exact distribution of the spectrum of the graph $T_n$ is unknown. We present the surface magnetic field conditions of the brightest pulsating RV Tauri star, R Sct. Our investigation is based on the longest spectropolarimetric survey ever performed on this variable star. The analysis of high resolution spectra and circular polarization data give sharp information on the dynamics of the atmosphere and the surface magnetism, respectively. Our analysis shows that surface magnetic field can be detected at different phases along a pulsating cycle, and that it may be related to the presence of a radiative shock wave periodically emerging out of the photosphere and propagating throughout the stellar atmosphere., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

Study of the local optical properties using electron beam (e-beam) can provide a valuable information concerning the inspection of the materials quality, the presence of the different phase inclusions and defects. Halide perovskites have been shown to be highly sensitive to external stress conditions like ambient atmosphere, light, and heat. In this paper, the cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy has been exploited to carry out the investigation of CH3NH3PbBr3 monocrystals under low energy electron beam irradiation. The CL spectra exhibited strong transformation with the increase of the irradiation dose and significant shifts of the peak maximums from 2.23 eV to >2.5 eV. Utilizing a larger e-beam energy (>20 keV) was found to be preferable to slow down the dynamics of the decomposition and corrosion. The mechanisms of the changes in MAPbBr3 properties after e-beam exposure and correlation to the in-depth distribution of deposited energy were discussed., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

The defect-activity in halide perovskites remains a critical factor for the application in optoelectronics. The imperfections (vacancies, anti-sites, interstitials) formed in the lattice of the halide perovskites were considered as a main origin for the corrosion of the interfaces and decomposition process under external stress. At the same time, the self-healing effect was reported as one of the features for the devices based on halide perovskites, which manifests in the recovery of device performance under specific conditions. Such processes require a detailed analysis for the quantitative analysis of the defect parameters. In this work, we used Admittance and Optical Deep-level Transient spectroscopy to determine the evolution of the defect energy levels in the simplified rectifying device architecture based on CH3NH3PbBr3 after consecutive accumulation of the absorbed radiation dose (fast electrons, 5 MeV). We found that electron beam irradiation induces the formation of the deep states of anti-sites PbBr with activation energy of 0.83 eV. Increase of the absorbed radiation dose up to 1.5 Mrad resulted in a critical raise of 0.83 eV defect concentration, which can be effectively annealed during the temperature sweep. The changes in the defect parameters after different values of the absorbed radiation dose were analyzed and discussed. The connected coalition in a graph $G=(V,E)$ consists of two disjoint sets of vertices $V_{1}$ and $V_{2}$, neither of which is a connected dominating set but whose union $V_{1}\cup V_{2}$, is a connected dominating set. A connected coalition partition in a graph $G$ of order $n=|V|$ is a vertex partition $\psi$ = $\{V_1, V_2,..., V_k \}$ such that every set $V_i \in \psi$ either is a connected dominating set consisting of a single vertex of degree $n-1$, or is not a connected dominating set but forms a connected coalition with another set $V_j\in \psi$ which is not a connected dominating set. The connected coalition number, denoted by $CC(G)$, is the maximum cardinality of a connected coalition partition of $G$. In this paper, we initiate the study of connected coalition in graphs and present some basic results. Precisely, we characterize all graphs that have a connected coalition partition. Moreover, we show that for any graph $G$ of order $n$ with $\delta(G)=1$ and with no full vertex, it holds that $CC(G)

Lab-on-a-chip (LOC) forms the basis of the new-generation portable analytical systems. LOC allows the manipulation of ultralow flows of liquid reagents and multistep reactions on a microfluidic chip, which requires a robust and precise instrument to control the flow of liquids on a chip. However, commercially available flow meters appear to be a standalone option adding a significant dead volume of tubes for connection to the chip. Furthermore, most of them cannot be fabricated within the same technological cycle as microfluidic channels. Here, we report on a membrane-free microfluidic thermal flow sensor (MTFS) that can be integrated into a silicon-glass microfluidic chip with a microchannel topology. We propose a membrane-free design with thin-film thermo-resistive sensitive elements isolated from microfluidic channels and 100 mm wafers silicon-glass fabrication route. It ensures MTFS compatibility with corrosive liquids, which is critically important for biological applications. MTFS design rules for the best sensitivity and measurement range are proposed. A method for automated thermo-resistive sensitive elements calibration is described. The device parameters are experimentally tested for hundreds of hours with a reference Coriolis flow sensor demonstrating a relative flow error of less than 5% within the range of 2-30 uL/min along with a sub-second time response.

Fused silica glass is a material of choice for micromechanical, microfluidic, and optical devices due to its ultimate chemical resistance, optical, electrical, and mechanical performance. Wet etching in hydrofluoric solutions especially a buffered oxide etching (BOE) solution is still the key method for fabricating fused silica glass-based microdevices. It is well known that protective mask integrity during deep fused silica wet etching is a big challenge due to chemical stability of fused glass and extremely aggressive BOE properties. Here, we propose a multilevel fused silica glass microstructures fabrication route based on deep wet etching through a stepped mask with just a one grayscale photolithography step. First, we provide a deep comprehensive analysis of a fused quartz dissolution mechanism in BOE solution and calculate the main fluoride fractions like $HF^-_2$, $F^-$, $(HF)_2$ components in a BOE solution as a function of pH and $NH_4F:HF$ ratio at room temperature. Then, we experimentally investigate the influence of BOE concentration ($NH_4F:HF$ from 1:1 to 14:1) on the mask resistance, etch rate and profile isotropy during fused silica 60 minutes etching through a metal/photoresist mask. Finally, we demonstrate a high-quality multilevel over-200 um isotropic wet etching process with the rate up to 3 um/min, which could be of a great interest for advanced fused silica microdevices with flexure suspensions, inertial masses, microchannels, and through-wafer holes., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

V. Levenshtein first proposed the sequence reconstruction problem in 2001. This problem studies the model where the same sequence from some set is transmitted over multiple channels, and the decoder receives the different outputs. Assume that the transmitted sequence is at distance $d$ from some code and there are at most $r$ errors in every channel. Then the sequence reconstruction problem is to find the minimum number of channels required to recover exactly the transmitted sequence that has to be greater than the maximum intersection between two metric balls of radius $r$, where the distance between their centers is at least $d$. In this paper, we study the sequence reconstruction problem of permutations under the Hamming distance. In this model we define a Cayley graph over the symmetric group, study its properties and find the exact value of the largest intersection of its two metric balls for $d=2r$. Moreover, we give a lower bound on the largest intersection of two metric balls for $d=2r-1$.

During the last years, giant optical anisotropy demonstrated its paramount importance for light manipulation which resulted in numerous applications ranging from subdiffraction light guiding to switchable nanolasers. In spite of recent advances in the field, achieving continuous tunability of optical anisotropy remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we present a solution to the problem through chemical alteration of the ratio of halogen atoms (X = Br or Cl) in single-crystal CsPbX$_3$ halide perovskites. It turns out that the anisotropy originates from an excitonic resonance in the perovskite, which spectral position and strength are determined by the halogens composition. As a result, we manage to continually modify the optical anisotropy by 0.14. We also discover that the halide perovskite can demonstrate optical anisotropy up to 0.6 in the visible range -- the largest value among non-van der Waals materials. Moreover, our results reveal that this anisotropy could be in-plane and out-of-plane, depending on perovskite shape -- rectangular and square. Hence, it can serve as an additional degree of freedom for anisotropy manipulation. As a practical demonstration, we created perovskite anisotropic nanowaveguides and show a significant impact of anisotropy on high-order guiding modes. Transposition graph $T_n$ is defined as a Cayley graph over the symmetric group generated by all transpositions. It is known that all eigenvalues of $T_n$ are integers. However, an explicit description of the spectrum is unknown. In this paper we prove that for any integer $k\geqslant 0$ there exists $n_0$ such that for any $n\geqslant n_0$ and any $m \in \{0, \dots, k\}$, $m$ is an eigenvalue of $T_n$. In particular, it is proved that zero is an eigenvalue of $T_n$ for any $n\neq2$, and one is an eigenvalue of $T_n$ for any odd $n\geqslant 7$ and for any even $n \geqslant 14$. We also present exact values of the third and the fourth largest eigenvalues of $T_n$ with their multiplicities.

Understanding convection in red supergiants and the mechanisms that trigger the mass loss from these evolved stars are the general goals of most observations of Betelgeuse and its inner circumstellar environment. Linear spectropolarimetry of the atomic lines of the spectrum of Betelgeuse reveals information about the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of brightness in its atmosphere. We model the distribution of plasma and its velocities and use inversion algorithms to fit the observed linear polarization. We obtain the first 3D images of the photosphere of Betelgeuse. Within the limits of the used approximations, we recover vertical convective flows and measure the velocity of the rising plasma at different heights in the photosphere. In several cases, we find this velocity to be constant with height, indicating the presence of forces other than gravity acting on the plasma and counteracting it. In some cases, these forces are sufficient to maintain plasma rising at 60\,\kms to heights where this velocity is comparable to the escape velocity. Forces are present in the photosphere of Betelgeuse that allow plasma to reach velocities close to the escape velocity. Symbolic computation for systems of differential equations is often computationally expensive. Many practical differential models have a form of polynomial or rational ODE system with specified outputs. A basic symbolic approach to analyze these models is to compute and then symbolically process the polynomial system obtained by sufficiently many Lie derivatives of the output functions with respect to the vector field given by the ODE system. In this paper, we present a method for speeding up Gr\"obner basis computation for such a class of polynomial systems by using specific monomial ordering, including weights for the variables, coming from the structure of the ODE model. We provide empirical results that show improvement across different symbolic computing frameworks and apply the method to speed up structural identifiability analysis of ODE models.

An original method of estimating the projected rotational velocity, $vsini$, and the macroturbulent velocity, $v_{\rm mac}$, of evolved M giant stars is presented. It is based on the use of spectrum synthesis and multi-line analysis tools. The goal is to fit the mean line profile of observations with that of synthetic spectra. The method is applied to the red giant star RZ Ari and the results $v\sin i$ = 6.0 $\pm$ 0.5 km/s and $v_{\rm mac}$ = 2.0 $\pm$ 1.0 km/s are obtained.

We present a spectral study of the single magnetically active K giant OP And in the period 1979 -- 2018, monitoring the variability of the activity indicator line H${\alpha}$. Original data obtained in the period 2015 -- 2018 with the echelle spectrograph ESpeRo at the 2m telescope of the National Astronomical Observatory Rozhen in Bulgaria, previously unpublished original data obtained in the period 1997 -- 2007 and on one night in 2013 with the Coude spectrograph at the same telescope, as well as data from the literature are presented in this study. The variability of the H${\alpha}$ line reveals that the activity level of OP And is higher in the period 1993 -- 2000, while during the period 2008 -- 2010 it is lower, possibly close to a minimum. Also, our data for the period 2015 -- 2018 show that the activity level is increasing again. Spectral observations of the activity indicators CaII H&K lines and CaII IR triplet are sparse during the studied period. We use such ones when possible to confirm the detection of some flare events. The structure of H${\alpha}$ changes with the activity level: when the activity is higher, we observe a blue-shifted component of this line, interpreted as an expanding area above the photosphere, but during a lower activity period it is almost absent. Our results are in a good agreement with the idea that the magnetic field controls the mass outflow in this giant. More years of observations are necessary to determine the eventual activity cycle of OP And.

Analysis of X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS) data for non-equilibrium dynamics often requires manual binning of age regions of an intensity-intensity correlation function. This leads to a loss of temporal resolution and accumulation of systematic error for the parameters quantifying the dynamics, especially in cases with considerable noise. Moreover, the experiments with high data collection rates create the need for automated online analysis, where manual binning is not possible. Here, we integrate a denoising autoencoder model into algorithms for analysis of non-equilibrium two-time intensity-intensity correlation functions. The model can be applied to an input of an arbitrary size. Noise reduction allows to extract the parameters that characterize the sample dynamics with temporal resolution limited only by frame rates. Not only does it improve the quantitative usage of the data, but it also creates the potential for automating the analytical workflow. Various approaches for uncertainty quantification and extension of the model for anomalies detection are discussed.

The Pancake graphs $P_n, n\geqslant 2$, are Cayley graphs over the symmetric group $\mathrm{Sym}_n$ generated by prefix-reversals. There are six generating sets of prefix-reversals of cardinality three which give connected Cayley graphs over the symmetric group known as cubic Pancake graphs. In this paper we study the girth of the cubic Pancake graphs. It is proved that considered cubic Pancake graphs have the girths at most twelve.

Imaging, scattering, and spectroscopy are fundamental in understanding and discovering new functional materials. Contemporary innovations in automation and experimental techniques have led to these measurements being performed much faster and with higher resolution, thus producing vast amounts of data for analysis. These innovations are particularly pronounced at user facilities and synchrotron light sources. Machine learning (ML) methods are regularly developed to process and interpret large datasets in real-time with measurements. However, there remain conceptual barriers to entry for the facility general user community, whom often lack expertise in ML, and technical barriers for deploying ML models. Herein, we demonstrate a variety of archetypal ML models for on-the-fly analysis at multiple beamlines at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II). We describe these examples instructively, with a focus on integrating the models into existing experimental workflows, such that the reader can easily include their own ML techniques into experiments at NSLS-II or facilities with a common infrastructure. The framework presented here shows how with little effort, diverse ML models operate in conjunction with feedback loops via integration into the existing Bluesky Suite for experimental orchestration and data management., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We present a construction of Neumaier graphs with nexus 1, which generalises two known constructions of Neumaier graphs. We also use W. Wang, L. Qiu, and Y. Hu switching to show that we construct cospectral Neumaier graphs. Finally, we show that several small strictly Neumaier graphs can be obtained from our construction, and give a geometric or algebraic description for each of these graphs.

In this paper an improved bound on the chromatic number of the Pancake graph $P_n, n\geqslant 2$, is presented. The bound is obtained using a subadditivity property of the chromatic number of the Pancake graph. We also investigate an equitable coloring of $P_n$. An equitable $(n-1)$-coloring based on efficient dominating sets is given and optimal equitable $4$-colorings are considered for small $n$. It is conjectured that the chromatic number of $P_n$ coincides with its equitable chromatic number for any $n\geqslant 2$.

The multidisciplinarity of robotics creates a need for robust integration methodologies that can facilitate the adoption of state-of-the-art research components in an industrial application. Unfortunately, there are no clear, community accepted guidelines or standards that define the integration of such components in a single robotic system. In this paper, we propose a methodology that assesses the software components of a candidate system on the basis of the effort required to integrate them and the impact their integration will have on a target system. We demonstrate how this methodology can be applied using an industrial tool packing system as an example. The system integrates a wide range of both in-house and third-party research outputs and software components. We prove the effectiveness of our approach by evaluating system performance with an experimental benchmark that assesses the robustness, reliability and operational speed of the system for the given packing task. We also demonstrate how our methodology can be used to predict the amount of integration time required for a component. The proposed integration methodology can be applied to any robotic system to facilitate its transition from the research to an industrial environment.

Like other experimental techniques, X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy is subject to various kinds of noise. Random and correlated fluctuations and heterogeneities can be present in a two-time correlation function and obscure the information about the intrinsic dynamics of a sample. Simultaneously addressing the disparate origins of noise in the experimental data is challenging. We propose a computational approach for improving the signal-to-noise ratio in two-time correlation functions that is based on Convolutional Neural Network Encoder-Decoder (CNN-ED) models. Such models extract features from an image via convolutional layers, project them to a low dimensional space and then reconstruct a clean image from this reduced representation via transposed convolutional layers. Not only are ED models a general tool for random noise removal, but their application to low signal-to-noise data can enhance the data quantitative usage since they are able to learn the functional form of the signal. We demonstrate that the CNN-ED models trained on real-world experimental data help to effectively extract equilibrium dynamics parameters from two-time correlation functions, containing statistical noise and dynamic heterogeneities. A Deza graph $G$ with parameters $(n,k,b,a)$ is a $k$-regular graph with $n$ vertices such that any two distinct vertices have $b$ or $a$ common neighbours. The children $G_A$ and $G_B$ of a Deza graph $G$ are defined on the vertex set of $G$ such that every two distinct vertices are adjacent in $G_A$ or $G_B$ if and only if they have $a$ or $b$ common neighbours, respectively. A strongly Deza graph is a Deza graph with strongly regular children. In this paper we give a spectral characterisation of strongly Deza graphs, show relationships between eigenvalues, and study strongly Deza graphs which are distance-regular.

Context: Pollux is considered as an archetype of a giant star hosting a planet. We then discovered a weak magnetic field at its surface using spectropolarimetry. Aims and Methods: We followed up our investigations on Pollux first using ESPaDOnS at CFHT and then Narval at TBL to obtain Stokes I and Stokes V spectra to study their variations for a duration of 4.25 years, that is, for more than two periods of about 590 d of the RV variations. We used the least-squares deconvolution (LSD) profiles to measure the longitudinal magnetic field and to perform a Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI) investigation. Results: The longitudinal magnetic field of Pollux is found to vary with a sinusoidal behavior and a period similar to that of the RV variations. From the ZDI investigation a rotation period of Pollux is determined to be equal to 660+/-15 days and possibly different than the period of variations of the RV. As to the magnetic topology, the poloidal component is dominant and almost purely dipolar with an inclination of 10.5{\deg} of the dipole with respect to the rotation axis. The mean strength of the surface magnetic field is 0.44 G. Conclusions: As to the origin of the magnetic field of Pollux, we favor the hypothesis that it is maintained through contemporaneous dynamo action. Pollux appears as the representative of a class of slowly rotating and weakly magnetic G-K red giants. To explain the sinusoidal RV variations of Pollux, two scenarios are proposed. If the RV period is different from the rotation period, the observed periodic RV variations are due to the hosted planet and the contribution of Pollux magnetic activity is not significantly detected. In the peculiar case in which the two periods are equal, we cannot discard the possibility that the activity of Pollux could explain the total RV variations and that the planet hypothesis would appear unnecessary., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Novel phases of matter with unique properties that emerge from quantum and topological protection present an important thrust of modern research. Of particular interest is to engineer these phases on demand using ultrafast external stimuli, such as photoexcitation, which offers prospects of their integration into future devices compatible with optical communication and information technology. Here, we use MeV Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) to show how a transient three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal state can be induced by a femtosecond laser pulse in a topological insulator ZrTe$_5$. We observe marked changes in Bragg diffraction, which are characteristic of bond distortions in the photoinduced state. Using the atomic positions refined from the UED, we perform density functional theory (DFT) analysis of the electronic band structure. Our results reveal that the equilibrium state of ZrTe$_5$ is a topological insulator with a small band gap of $\sim$25 meV, consistent with angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments. However, the gap is closed in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the photoinduced transient state, where massless Dirac fermions emerge in the chiral band structure. The Star graph $S_n$, $n\ge 3$, is the Cayley graph on the symmetric group $Sym_n$ generated by the set of transpositions $\{(12),(13),\ldots,(1n)\}$. In this work we study eigenfunctions of $S_n$ corresponding to the second largest eigenvalue $n-2$. For $n\ge 8$ and $n=3$, we find the minimum cardinality of the support of an eigenfunction of $S_n$ corresponding to the second largest eigenvalue and obtain a characterization of eigenfunctions with the minimum cardinality of the support.

Current burning issues in stellar physics, for both hot and cool stars, concern their magnetism. In hot stars, stable magnetic fields of fossil origin impact their stellar structure and circumstellar environment, with a likely major role in stellar evolution. However, this role is complex and thus poorly understood as of today. It needs to be quantified with high-resolution UV spectropolarimetric measurements. In cool stars, UV spectropolarimetry would provide access to the structure and magnetic field of the very dynamic upper stellar atmosphere, providing key data for new progress to be made on the role of magnetic fields in heating the upper atmospheres, launching stellar winds, and more generally in the interaction of cool stars with their environment (circumstellar disk, planets) along their whole evolution. Dual Seidel switching is a graph operation introduced by W.~Haemers in 1984. This operation can change the graph, however it does not change its bipartite double, and because of this, the operation leaves the squares of the eigenvalues invariant. Thus, if a graph is integral then it is still integral after dual Seidel switching. In this paper two new infinite families of integral graphs are obtained by applying dual Seidel switching to the Star graphs and the Odd graphs. In particular, three new $4$-regular integral graphs with their spectra are found.

Formation of electronic nematicity is a common thread of unconventional superconductors. In iron-based materials, the long-range nematic order is revealed by the orthorhombic lattice distortion, which importance is a highly controversial topic due the small magnitude of the distortion. Here, we study the local crystal structure of FeSe and its interaction with electronic degrees of freedom using ultrafast electron diffraction, x-ray pair distribution function analysis, and transmission electron microscopy and find a significant lattice response to local nematicity. The study demonstrates how local lattice distortions, which exist even at temperatures above the nematic phase transition, can be released by photoexcitation, leading to an enhancement of the crystalline order. The observed local atomic structures and their out-of-equilibrium behavior unravel a sophisticated coupling between the lattice and nematic order parameter in FeSe.

We report pair distribution function measurements of the iron-based superconductor FeSe above and below the structural transition temperature. Structural analysis reveals a local orthorhombic distortion with a correlation length of about 4 nm at temperatures where an average tetragonal symmetry is observed. The analysis further demonstrates that the local distortion is larger than the distortion at temperatures where the average observed symmetry is orthorhombic. Our results suggest that the low-temperature macroscopic nematic state in FeSe forms from an imperfect ordering of orbital-degeneracy-lifted nematic fluctuations which persist up to at least 300 K., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Betelgeuse is an M-type supergiant that presents a circularly polarized (Stokes V) signal in its line profiles, interpreted in terms of a surface magnetic field. The weak circular polarization signal has been monitored over 7.5 years in order to follow its evolution on different timescales, and eventually to determine its physical origin. Linear polarization measurements have also been obtained regularly in the last few years. We used both the ESPaDOnS and Narval spectropolarimeters to obtain high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) spectra, which were processed by means of the least-squares deconvolution (LSD) method. In order to ensure the reality of the very weak circular polarization, special care has been taken to limit instrumental effects. In addition, several tests were performed on the Stokes V signal to establish its stellar and Zeeman origin. We confirm the magnetic nature of the circular polarization, pointing to a surface magnetic field of the order of 1G. The Stokes V profiles present variations over different timescales, the most prominent one being close to the long secondary period (LSP; around 2000d for Betelgeuse) often invoked in red evolved stars. This long period is also dominant for all the other Stokes parameters. The circular polarization is tentatively modeled by means of magnetic field concentrations mimicking spots, showing in particular that the velocity associated with each "spot" also follows the long timescale, and that this signal is nearly always slightly redshifted. From the coupled variations of both linear and circular polarization signatures in amplitude, velocity and timescale, we favour giant convection cells as the main engine at the origin of polarization signatures and variations in all the Stokes parameters. This strengthens support for the hypothesis that large convective cells are at the origin of the LSP.

The paper gives an overview of the Russian Semantic Similarity Evaluation (RUSSE) shared task held in conjunction with the Dialogue 2015 conference. There exist a lot of comparative studies on semantic similarity, yet no analysis of such measures was ever performed for the Russian language. Exploring this problem for the Russian language is even more interesting, because this language has features, such as rich morphology and free word order, which make it significantly different from English, German, and other well-studied languages. We attempt to bridge this gap by proposing a shared task on the semantic similarity of Russian nouns. Our key contribution is an evaluation methodology based on four novel benchmark datasets for the Russian language. Our analysis of the 105 submissions from 19 teams reveals that successful approaches for English, such as distributional and skip-gram models, are directly applicable to Russian as well. On the one hand, the best results in the contest were obtained by sophisticated supervised models that combine evidence from different sources. We consider the symmetric group $\mathrm{Sym}_n,\,n\geqslant 2$, generated by the set $S$ of transpositions $(1~i),\,2 \leqslant i \leqslant n$, and the Cayley graph $S_n=Cay(\mathrm{Sym}_n,S)$ called the Star graph. For any positive integers $n\geqslant 3$ and $m$ with $n > 2m$, we present a family of $PI$-eigenfunctions of $S_n$ with eigenvalue $n-m-1$. We establish a connection of these functions with the standard basis of a Specht module. In the case of largest non-principal eigenvalue $n-2$ we prove that any eigenfunction of $S_n$ can be reconstructed by its values on the second neighbourhood of a vertex.

Hundreds of thousands of spectators use Twitch.tv to watch The International, a Dota 2 eSports tournament and communicate in massive chats. In this paper, we analyse crowd behavior in these chats, disentangle features of social communication, such as contextual meanings of emojis and short messages. We apply structural topic modelling and cross-correlation analysis to investigate topical and temporal patterns of chat messages and their relation to in-game events. We show that in-game events drive the communication in the massive chat and define its emergent topical structure to a various extent. Following the discussion in communication and social computing literature, we discuss these findings in the framework of analysis of communication of physical sports crowds and outline some limitations of the 'stadium' metaphor, suggesting a complementary metaphor of 'sports bar' as a useful analytical and design device., Comment: v2

Semantic relatedness of terms represents similarity of meaning by a numerical score. On the one hand, humans easily make judgments about semantic relatedness. On the other hand, this kind of information is useful in language processing systems. While semantic relatedness has been extensively studied for English using numerous language resources, such as associative norms, human judgments, and datasets generated from lexical databases, no evaluation resources of this kind have been available for Russian to date. Our contribution addresses this problem. We present five language resources of different scale and purpose for Russian semantic relatedness, each being a list of triples (word_i, word_j, relatedness_ij). Four of them are designed for evaluation of systems for computing semantic relatedness, complementing each other in terms of the semantic relation type they represent. These benchmarks were used to organize a shared task on Russian semantic relatedness, which attracted 19 teams. We use one of the best approaches identified in this competition to generate the fifth high-coverage resource, the first open distributional thesaurus of Russian. Multiple evaluations of this thesaurus, including a large-scale crowdsourcing study involving native speakers, indicate its high accuracy.

Recent spectropolarimetric observations of otherwise ordinary G, K, and M giants revealed localized magnetic strips in the HRD coincident with the regions where the first dredge-up and core He-burning occur. We seek to understand the origin of magnetic fields in such late-type giant stars. In analogy with late-type dwarf stars, we focus primarily on parameters known to influence the generation of magnetic fields in the outer convective envelope. We compute the classical dynamo parameters along the evolutionary tracks of low- and intermediate-mass stars at various metallicities using stellar models that have been extensively tested by spectroscopic and asteroseismic observations. These include convective turnover timescales and convective Rossby numbers, computed from the PMS to the tip of the RGB or the early AGB. To investigate the effects of the very extended outer convective envelope, we compute these parameters both for the entire convective envelope and locally, that is, at different depths within the envelope. We also compute the turnover timescales and corresponding Rossby numbers for the convective cores of intermediate-mass stars on the main sequence. Our models show that the Rossby number of the convective envelope becomes lower than unity in the well-delimited locations of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram where magnetic fields have indeed been detected. We show that alpha-omega dynamo processes might not be continuously operating, but that they are favored in the stellar convective envelope at two specific moments along the evolution tracks, that is, during the first dredge-up at the base of the RGB and during central helium burning in the helium-burning phase and early-AGB. Samples of nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide (anatase, $0.2 \leq N \leq 1.0~wt\%$) prepared by the sol-gel method were investigated using X-band EPR spectroscopy, photoconductivity and photocatalysis measurements. $N\bullet$ and $NO\bullet$ paramagnetic defects in N-TiO2 have been observed; their concentrations and spin-Hamiltonian parameters were calculated. An increase both in the rate of the generation of free charge carriers and in the rate of photocatalysis was found in N-TiO2 in contrast with non-doped titania under visible light. This work studies the magnetic activity of the late-type giant 37 Com. This star belongs to the group of weak G-band stars that present very strong carbon deficiency in their photospheres. The paper is a part of a global investigation into the properties and origin of magnetic fields in cool giants. We use spectropolarimetric data, which allows the simultaneous measurement of the longitudinal magnetic field $B_{l}$, line activity indicators (H$\alpha$, Ca\,{\sc ii} IRT, S-index) and radial velocity of the star, and consequently perform a direct comparison of their time variability. Mean Stokes V profiles are extracted using the least squares deconvolution (LSD) method. One map of the surface magnetic field of the star is reconstructed via the Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI) inversion technique. A periodogram analysis is performed on our dataset and it reveals a rotation period of 111 days. We interpret this period to be the rotation period of 37 Com. The reconstructed magnetic map reveals that the structure of the surface magnetic field is complex and features a significant toroidal component. The time variability of the line activity indicators, radial velocity and magnetic field $B_{l}$ indicates a possible evolution of the surface magnetic structures in the period from 2008 to 2011. For completeness of our study, we use customized stellar evolutionary models suited to a weak G-band star. Synthetic spectra are also calculated to confirm the peculiar abundance of 37 Com. We deduce that 37 Com is a 6.5~$M_{\odot}$ weak G-band star located in the Hertzsprung gap, whose magnetic activity is probably due to dynamo action., Comment: Accepted in A&A, 14 pages, 10 figures

Magnetic and thermodynamical properties of a system of spins in a honeycomb lattice, such as magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, in a low-temperature regime are investigated by considering the effects of a Kekul\'e scalar exchange and QED vacuum polarization corrections to the interparticle potential. The spin lattice calculations are carried out by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Betelgeuse is an M supergiant that harbors spots and giant granules at its surface and presents linear polarization of its continuum. We have previously discovered linear polarization signatures associated with individual lines in the spectra of cool and evolved stars. Here, we investigate whether a similar linearly polarized spectrum exists for Betelgeuse. We used the spectropolarimeter Narval, combining multiple polarimetric sequences to obtain high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of individual lines, as well as the least-squares deconvolution (LSD) approach. We have discovered the existence of a linearly polarized spectrum for Betelgeuse, detecting a rather strong signal (at a few times 10$^{-4}$ of the continuum intensity level), both in individual lines and in the LSD profiles. Studying its properties and the signal observed for the resonant \ion{Na}{i}\,D lines, we conclude that we are mainly observing depolarization of the continuum by the absorption lines. The linear polarization of the Betelgeuse continuum is due to the anisotropy of the radiation field induced by brightness spots at the surface and Rayleigh scattering in the atmosphere. We have developed a geometrical model to interpret the observed polarization, from which we infer the presence of two brightness spots and their positions on the surface of Betelgeuse. We show that applying the model to each velocity bin along the Stokes Q and U profiles allows the derivation of a map of the bright spots. We use the Narval linear polarization observations of Betelgeuse obtained over a period of 1.4 years to study the evolution of the spots. Context: When crossing the Hertzsprung gap, intermediate-mass stars develop a convective envelope. Fast rotators on the main sequence, or Ap star descendants, are expected to become magnetic active subgiants during this evolutionary phase. Aims: We compare the surface magnetic fields and activity indicators of two active, fast rotating red giants with similar masses and spectral class but diferent rotation rates - OU And (Prot=24.2 d) and 31 Com (Prot=6.8 d) - to address the question of the origin of their magnetism and high activity. Methods: Observations were carried out with the Narval spectropolarimeter in 2008 and 2013.We used the least squares deconvolution technique to extract Stokes V and I profiles to detect Zeeman signatures of the magnetic field of the stars. We provide Zeeman-Doppler imaging, activity indicator monitoring, and a precise estimation of stellar parameters. We use stellar evolutionary models to infer the evolutionary status and the initial rotation velocity on the main sequence. Results: The detected magnetic field of OU And is a strong one. Its longitudinal component Bl reaches 40 G and presents an about sinusoidal variation with reversal of the polarity. The magnetic topology of OU And is dominated by large scale elements and is mainly poloidal with an important dipole component, and a significant toroidal component. The detected magnetic field of 31 Com is weaker, with a magnetic map showing a more complex field geometry, and poloidal and toroidal components of equal contributions. The evolutionary models show that the progenitors of OU And and 31 Com must have been rotat Conclusions: OU And appears to be the probable descendant of a magnetic Ap star, and 31 Com the descendant of a relatively fast rotator on the main sequence., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures

We investigate the magnetic field at the surface of 48 red giants selected as promising for detection of Stokes V Zeeman signatures in their spectral lines. We use the spectropolarimeters Narval and ESPaDOnS to detect circular polarization within the photospheric absorption lines of our targets and use the least-squares deconvolution (LSD) method. We also measure the classical S-index activity indicator, and the stellar radial velocity. To infer the evolutionary status of our giants and to interpret our results, we use state-of-the-art stellar evolutionary models with predictions of convective turnover times. We unambiguously detect magnetic fields via Zeeman signatures in 29 of the 48 red giants in our sample. Zeeman signatures are found in all but one of the 24 red giants exhibiting signs of activity, as well as 6 out of 17 bright giant stars.The majority of the magnetically detected giants are either in the first dredge up phase or at the beginning of core He burning, i.e. phases when the convective turnover time is at a maximum: this corresponds to a 'magnetic strip' for red giants in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. A close study of the 16 giants with known rotational periods shows that the measured magnetic field strength is tightly correlated with the rotational properties, namely to the rotational period and to the Rossby number Ro. Our results show that the magnetic fields of these giants are produced by a dynamo. Four stars for which the magnetic field is measured to be outstandingly strong with respect to that expected from the rotational period/magnetic field relation or their evolutionary status are interpreted as being probable descendants of magnetic Ap stars.
