X-ray dark-field imaging visualises scattering from sample microstructure, and has found application in medical and security contexts. While most X-ray dark-field imaging techniques rely on masks, gratings, or crystals, recent work on the Fokker--Planck model of diffusive imaging has enabled dark-field imaging in the propagation-based geometry. Images captured at multiple propagation distances or X-ray energies can be used to reconstruct dark-field from propagation-based images but have previously required multiple exposures. Here, we show single-exposure dark-field imaging by exploiting the harmonic content in a monochromatised synchrotron beam and utilising an energy-discriminating photon-counting detector to capture dual-energy propagation-based images. The method is validated by filming time-varying samples, showing the advantage of the dark-field contrast in analysing dynamic evolution. We measure and adjust for the impact of detector charge-sharing on the images. X-ray dark-field imaging is well-suited to visualizing the health of the lungs because the alveoli create a strong dark-field signal. However, time-resolved and tomographic (i.e., 4D) dark-field imaging is challenging, since most x-ray dark-field techniques require multiple sample exposures, captured while scanning the position of crystals or gratings. Here, we present the first in vivo 4D x-ray dark-field lung imaging in mice. This was achieved by synchronizing the data acquisition process of a single-exposure grid-based imaging approach with the breath cycle. The short data acquisition time per dark-field projection made this approach feasible for 4D x-ray dark-field imaging by minimizing the motion-blurring effect, the total time required and the radiation dose imposed on the sample. Images were captured from a control mouse and from mouse models of muco-obstructive disease and lung cancer, where a change in the size of the alveoli was expected. This work demonstrates that the 4D dark-field signal provides complementary information that is inaccessible from conventional attenuation-based CT images, in particular, how the size of the alveoli from different parts of the lungs changes throughout a breath cycle, with examples shown across the different models. By quantifying the dark-field signal and relating it to other physical properties of the alveoli, this technique could be used to perform functional lung imaging that allows the assessment of both global and regional lung conditions where the size or expansion of the alveoli is affected., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, supplementary information available

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are known to be vulnerable to adversarial attacks. This paper addresses detection and defence against targeted white-box attacks on speech signals for ASR systems. While existing work has utilised diffusion models (DMs) to purify adversarial examples, achieving state-of-the-art results in keyword spotting tasks, their effectiveness for more complex tasks such as sentence-level ASR remains unexplored. Additionally, the impact of the number of forward diffusion steps on performance is not well understood. In this paper, we systematically investigate the use of DMs for defending against adversarial attacks on sentences and examine the effect of varying forward diffusion steps. Through comprehensive experiments on the Mozilla Common Voice dataset, we demonstrate that two forward diffusion steps can completely defend against adversarial attacks on sentences. Moreover, we introduce a novel, training-free approach for detecting adversarial attacks by leveraging a pre-trained DM. Many lung diseases require detailed visualisation for accurate diagnosis and treatment. High-resolution computed tomography (CT) is the gold-standard technique for non-invasive lung disease detection, but it presents a risk to the patient through the relatively high ionising radiation dose required. Utilising the X-ray phase information may allow improvements in image resolution at equal or lower radiation levels than current clinical imaging. Propagation-based phase-contrast imaging requires minimal adaption of existing medical systems, and is well suited to lung imaging due to the strong phase gradients introduced by the lung-air material interfaces. Herein, propagation-based phase contrast CT is demonstrated for large animals, namely lambs, as a model for paediatric patients, using monochromatic radiation and a photon-counting detector at the Imaging and Medical Beamline of the Australian Synchrotron. Image quality, normalised against radiation dose, was optimised as a function of the beam energy and propagation distance, with the optimal conditions used to test the available image quality at very low radiation dose. The resulting CT images demonstrate superior resolution to existing high-resolution CT systems, pushing dose to the quantum limit to comply with current Australian guidelines for infant chest CT exposure of $<2.5\:\text{mSv}$ effective dose. Constituent raw projections are shown to have significant proportions of pixels with zero photon counts that would create severe information loss in conventional CT. Phase retrieval enabled clear visualisation of minor lung airways at doses up to 1,225$\pm$31\% times lower than conventional CT reconstruction, at a voxel size of just 75$\mathrm{\mu}$m.

Dark-field X-ray imaging is a novel modality which visualises scattering from unresolved microstructure. Most dark-field imaging techniques rely on crystals or structured illumination, but recent work has shown that dark-field effects are observable in straightforward propagation-based imaging (PBI). Based on the single-material X-ray Fokker--Planck equation with an a priori dark-field energy dependence, we propose an algorithm to extract phase and dark-field effects from dual-energy PBI images. We successfully apply the dark-field retrieval algorithm to simulated and experimental dual-energy data, and show that by accounting for dark-field effects, projected thickness reconstruction is improved compared to the classic Paganin algorithm. X-ray imaging is a fast, precise and non-invasive method of imaging which, combined with computed tomography, provides detailed 3D rendering of samples. Incorporating propagation-based phase contrast can vastly improve data quality for weakly attenuating samples via material-specific phase retrieval filters, allowing radiation exposure to be reduced. However, applying phase retrieval to multi-material phantoms complicates analysis by requiring a choice of which material boundary to tune the phase retrieval. Filtering for the boundary with strongest phase contrast increases noise suppression, but with the detriment of over-blurring other interfaces, potentially obscuring small or neighbouring features and removing quantitative sample information. Additionally, regions bounded by more than one material type inherently cannot be conventionally filtered to reconstruct the whole boundary. As remedy, we present a computationally-efficient, non-iterative nor AI-mediated method for applying strong phase retrieval, whilst preserving sharp boundaries for all materials within the sample. This technique was tested on phase contrast images of a rabbit kitten brain encased by the surrounding dense skull. Using 24 keV synchrotron radiation with a 5 m propagation distance, our technique provided a 6.9-fold improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of brain tissue compared to the standard phase retrieval procedure, without over-smoothing the images. Simultaneous quantification of edge resolution and SNR gain was performed with an aluminium-water phantom imaged using a microfocus X-ray tube at mean energy 19.58 keV and 0.576 m effective propagation distance. Our method provided a 4.2-fold SNR boost whilst preserving the boundary resolution at 54 $\pm$ 1 $\mu$m, compared to 108 $\pm$ 2 $\mu$m in conventional phase retrieval.

We present a robust technique for calculating regional volume changes within the lung from X-ray radiograph sequences captured during ventilation, without the use of computed tomography (CT). This technique is based on the change in transmitted X-ray intensity that occurs for each lung region as air displaces the attenuating lung tissue. Lung air volumes calculated from X-ray intensity changes showed a strong correlation ($R^2$=0.98) against the true volumes, measured from high-resolution CT. This correlation enables us to accurately convert projected intensity data into relative changes in lung air volume. We have applied this technique to measure changes in regional lung volumes from X-ray image sequences of mechanically ventilated, recently-deceased newborn rabbits, without the use of CT. This study investigates the speech articulatory coordination in schizophrenia subjects exhibiting strong positive symptoms (e.g. hallucinations and delusions), using two distinct channel-delay correlation methods. We show that the schizophrenic subjects with strong positive symptoms and who are markedly ill pose complex articulatory coordination pattern in facial and speech gestures than what is observed in healthy subjects. This distinction in speech coordination pattern is used to train a multimodal convolutional neural network (CNN) which uses video and audio data during speech to distinguish schizophrenic patients with strong positive symptoms from healthy subjects. We also show that the vocal tract variables (TVs) which correspond to place of articulation and glottal source outperform the Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) when fused with Facial Action Units (FAUs) in the proposed multimodal network. For the clinical dataset we collected, our best performing multimodal network improves the mean F1 score for detecting schizophrenia by around 18% with respect to the full vocal tract coordination (FVTC) baseline method implemented with fusing FAUs and MFCCs., Comment: 5 pages. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2102.07054

The ill-posed problem of phase retrieval in optics, using one or more intensity measurements, has a multitude of applications using electromagnetic or matter waves. Many phase retrieval algorithms are computed on pixel arrays using discrete Fourier transforms due to their high computational efficiency. However, the mathematics underpinning these algorithms is typically formulated using continuous mathematics, which can result in a loss in spatial resolution in the reconstructed images. Herein we investigate how phase retrieval algorithms for propagation-based phase-contrast X-ray imaging can be rederived using discrete mathematics and result in more precise retrieval for single- and multi-material objects and for spectral image decomposition. We validate this theory through experimental measurements of spatial resolution using computed tomography (CT) reconstructions of plastic phantoms and biological tissue, using detectors with a range of imaging system point spread functions (PSFs). We demonstrate that if the PSF substantially suppresses high spatial frequencies, the potential improvement from utilising the discrete derivation is limited. However, with detectors characterised by a single pixel PSF (e.g. direct, photon-counting X-ray detectors), a significant improvement in spatial resolution can be obtained, demonstrated here at up to 17%.

Graph algorithms can be expressed in terms of linear algebra. GraphBLAS is a library of low-level building blocks for such algorithms that targets algorithm developers. LAGraph builds on top of the GraphBLAS to target users of graph algorithms with high-level algorithms common in network analysis. In this paper, we describe the first release of the LAGraph library, the design decisions behind the library, and performance using the GAP benchmark suite. LAGraph, however, is much more than a library. It is also a project to document and analyze the full range of algorithms enabled by the GraphBLAS. To that end, we have developed a compact and intuitive notation for describing these algorithms. This study investigates the speech articulatory coordination in schizophrenia subjects exhibiting strong positive symptoms (e.g.hallucinations and delusions), using a time delay embedded correlation analysis. We show that the schizophrenia subjects with strong positive symptoms and who are markedly ill pose complex coordination patterns in facial and speech gestures than what is observed in healthy subjects. This observation is in contrast to what previous studies have shown in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), where subjects with MDD show a simpler coordination pattern with respect to healthy controls or subjects in remission. This difference is not surprising given MDD is necessarily accompanied by Psychomotor slowing (i.e.,negative symptoms) which affects speech, ideation and motility. With respect to speech, psychomotor slowing results in slowed speech with more and longer pauses than what occurs in speech from the same speaker when they are in remission and from a healthy subject. Time delay embedded correlation analysis has been used to quantify the differences in coordination patterns of speech articulation. The current study is based on 17 Facial Action Units (FAUs) extracted from video data and 6 Vocal Tract Variables (TVs) obtained from simultaneously recorded audio data. The TVs are extracted using a speech inversion system based on articulatory phonology that maps the acoustic signal to vocal tract variables. The high-level time delay embedded correlation features computed from TVs and FAUs are used to train a stacking ensemble classifier fusing audio and video modalities. In X-ray imaging, photons are transmitted through and absorbed by the subject, but are also scattered in significant quantities. Previous attempts to use scattered photons for biological imaging used pencil or fan beam illumination. Here we present 3D X-ray Scatter Tomography using full-field illumination. Synchrotron imaging experiments were performed of a phantom and the chest of a juvenile rat. Transmitted and scattered photons were simultaneously imaged with separate cameras; a scientific camera directly downstream of the sample stage, and a pixelated detector with a pinhole imaging system placed at 45${}^\circ$ to the beam axis. We obtained scatter tomogram feature fidelity sufficient for segmentation of the lung and major airways in the rat. The image contrast in scatter tomogram slices approached that of transmission imaging, indicating robustness to the amount of multiple scattering present in our case. This opens the possibility of augmenting full-field 2D imaging systems with additional scatter detectors to obtain complementary modes or to improve the fidelity of existing images without additional dose, potentially leading to single-shot or reduced-angle tomography or overall dose reduction for live animal studies., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging

Zero forcing is a process on graphs in which a color change rule is used to force vertices to become blue. The amount of time taken for all vertices in the graph to become blue is the propagation time. Throttling minimizes the sum of the number of initial blue vertices and the propagation time. In this paper, we study throttling in the context of directed graphs (digraphs). We characterize all simple digraphs with throttling number at most $t$ and examine the change in the throttling number after flipping arcs and deleting vertices. We also introduce the orientation throttling interval (OTI) of an undirected graph, which is the range of throttling numbers achieved by the orientations of the graph. While the OTI is shown to vary among different graph families, some general bounds are obtained. Additionally, the maximum value of the OTI of a path is conjectured to be achieved by the orientation of a path whose arcs alternate in direction. Analyser-Based Phase-Contrast imaging (ABPCI) is a phase-contrast imaging method that produces high contrast images of weakly absorbing materials. However, it is only sensitive to phase variations lying in the diffraction plane of the analyser crystal (i.e in one dimension; 1-D), as it is highly sensitive to phase variations lying in the diffraction plane of the analyser crystal. In order to accurately account for and measure phase effects produced by the wavefield-sample interaction, ABPCI and other 1-D phase sensitive methods must achieve 2-D phase sensitivity. We applied an inclined geometry method to a Laue geometry setup for X-ray ABPCI through rotation of the detector and object about the optical axis. This allowed this traditionally 1-D phase sensitive phase contrast method to possess 2-D phase sensitivity. We acquired tomographic datasets over 360 degrees of a multi-material phantom with the detector and sample tilted by 8 degrees. The real and imaginary parts of the refractive index were reconstructed for the phantom.

Although deep convolutional networks have reached state-of-the-art performance in many medical image segmentation tasks, they have typically demonstrated poor generalisation capability. To be able to generalise from one domain (e.g. one imaging modality) to another, domain adaptation has to be performed. While supervised methods may lead to good performance, they require to fully annotate additional data which may not be an option in practice. In contrast, unsupervised methods don't need additional annotations but are usually unstable and hard to train. In this work, we propose a novel weakly-supervised method. Instead of requiring detailed but time-consuming annotations, scribbles on the target domain are used to perform domain adaptation. This paper introduces a new formulation of domain adaptation based on structured learning and co-segmentation. Our method is easy to train, thanks to the introduction of a regularised loss. The framework is validated on Vestibular Schwannoma segmentation (T1 to T2 scans). This study describes a new approach for material decomposition in x-ray imaging, utilising phase contrast to both increase sensitivity to weakly-attenuating samples and to act as a complementary measurement to attenuation, therefore allowing two overlaid materials to be separated. The measurements are captured using the single-exposure, single-grid x-ray phase contrast imaging technique, with a novel correction that aims to remove propagation-based phase effects seen at sharp edges in the attenuation image. The use of a single-exposure technique means that images could be collected in a high-speed sequence. Results are shown for both a known two-material sample and for a biological specimen.

Material decomposition in X-ray imaging uses the energy-dependence of attenuation to virtually decompose an object into specific constituent materials. X-ray phase contrast imaging is a developing technique that can enhance image contrast seen from weakly attenuating objects. In this paper, we combine spectral phase contrast imaging with material decomposition to both better visualise weakly attenuating features and separate them from overlying objects in radiography. We derive an algorithm that performs both tasks simultaneously and verify it against numerical simulations and experimental measurements of ideal two-component samples composed of pure aluminium and poly(methyl methacrylate). Additionally, we showcase first imaging results of a rabbit kitten's lung. The attenuation signal of a thorax, in particular, is dominated by the strongly attenuating bones of the ribcage, which combined with the weak soft tissue signal make it difficult to visualise the fine anatomical structures across the whole lung. In all cases, clean material decomposition was achieved, without residual phase contrast effects, from which we generate an un-obstructed image of the lung, free of bones. We present a pixel-specific, measurement-driven correction that effectively minimizes errors in detector response that give rise to the ring artifacts commonly seen in X-ray computed tomography (CT) scans. This correction is easy to implement, suppresses CT artifacts significantly, and is effective enough for use with both absorption and phase contrast imaging. It can be used as a standalone correction or in conjunction with existing ring artifact removal algorithms to further improve image quality. The current state of the art in playing many important perfect information games, including Chess and Go, combines planning and deep reinforcement learning with self-play. We extend this approach to imperfect information games and present ExIt-OOS, a novel approach to playing imperfect information games within the Expert Iteration framework and inspired by AlphaZero. We use Online Outcome Sampling, an online search algorithm for imperfect information games in place of MCTS. Interpretability and small labelled datasets are key issues in the practical application of deep learning, particularly in areas such as medicine. In this paper, we present a semi-supervised technique that addresses both these issues by leveraging large unlabelled datasets to encode and decode images into a dense latent representation. Using chest radiography as an example, we apply this encoder to other labelled datasets and apply simple models to the latent vectors to learn algorithms to identify heart failure. For each prediction, we generate visual rationales by optimizing a latent representation to minimize the prediction of disease while constrained by a similarity measure in image space. Decoding the resultant latent representation produces an image without apparent disease. The difference between the original decoding and the altered image forms an interpretable visual rationale for the algorithm's prediction on that image. We also apply our method to the MNIST dataset and compare the generated rationales to other techniques described in the literature.

Phase contrast X-ray imaging (PCXI) is an emerging imaging modality that has the potential to greatly improve radiography for medical imaging and materials analysis. PCXI makes it possible to visualise soft-tissue structures that are otherwise unresolved with conventional CT by rendering phase gradients in the X-ray wavefield visible. This can improve the contrast resolution of soft tissues structures, like the lungs and brain, by orders of magnitude. Phase retrieval suppresses noise, revealing weakly-attenuating soft tissue structures, however it does not remove the artefacts from the highly attenuating bone of the skull and from imperfections in the imaging system that can obscure those structures. The primary causes of these artefacts are investigated and a simple method to visualise the features they obstruct is proposed, which can easily be implemented for preclinical animal studies. We show that phase contrast X-ray CT (PCXI-CT) can resolve the soft tissues of the brain in situ without a need for contrast agents at a dose $\sim$400 times lower than would be required by standard absorption contrast CT. Generative Adversarial Neural Networks (GANs) are applied to the synthetic generation of prostate lesion MRI images. GANs have been applied to a variety of natural images, is shown show that the same techniques can be used in the medical domain to create realistic looking synthetic lesion images. 16mm x 16mm patches are extracted from 330 MRI scans from the SPIE ProstateX Challenge 2016 and used to train a Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Neural Network (DCGAN) utilizing cutting edge techniques. Synthetic outputs are compared to real images and the implicit latent representations induced by the GAN are explored. The Dice score is widely used for binary segmentation due to its robustness to class imbalance. Soft generalisations of the Dice score allow it to be used as a loss function for training convolutional neural networks (CNN). Although CNNs trained using mean-class Dice score achieve state-of-the-art results on multi-class segmentation, this loss function does neither take advantage of inter-class relationships nor multi-scale information. We argue that an improved loss function should balance misclassifications to favour predictions that are semantically meaningful. This paper investigates these issues in the context of multi-class brain tumour segmentation. Our contribution is threefold. 1) We propose a semantically-informed generalisation of the Dice score for multi-class segmentation based on the Wasserstein distance on the probabilistic label space. 2) We propose a holistic CNN that embeds spatial information at multiple scales with deep supervision. 3) We show that the joint use of holistic CNNs and generalised Wasserstein Dice scores achieves segmentations that are more semantically meaningful for brain tumour segmentation., Comment: Accepted as an oral presentation at the MICCAI 2017 Brain Lesion (BrainLes) Workshop

This work facilitates ensuring fairness of machine learning in the real world by decoupling fairness considerations in compound decisions. In particular, this work studies how fairness propagates through a compound decision-making processes, which we call a pipeline. Prior work in algorithmic fairness only focuses on fairness with respect to one decision. However, many decision-making processes require more than one decision. For instance, hiring is at least a two stage model: deciding who to interview from the applicant pool and then deciding who to hire from the interview pool. Perhaps surprisingly, we show that the composition of fair components may not guarantee a fair pipeline under a $(1+\varepsilon)$-equal opportunity definition of fair. However, we identify circumstances that do provide that guarantee. Brain tumour segmentation plays a key role in computer-assisted surgery. Deep neural networks have increased the accuracy of automatic segmentation significantly, however these models tend to generalise poorly to different imaging modalities than those for which they have been designed, thereby limiting their applications. For example, a network architecture initially designed for brain parcellation of monomodal T1 MRI can not be easily translated into an efficient tumour segmentation network that jointly utilises T1, T1c, Flair and T2 MRI. To tackle this, we propose a novel scalable multimodal deep learning architecture using new nested structures that explicitly leverage deep features within or across modalities. This aims at making the early layers of the architecture structured and sparse so that the final architecture becomes scalable to the number of modalities. We evaluate the scalable architecture for brain tumour segmentation and give evidence of its regularisation effect compared to the conventional concatenation approach., Comment: Paper accepted at MICCAI 2017

Phase-contrast X-ray imaging can improve the visibility of weakly absorbing objects (e.g. soft tissues) by an order of magnitude or more compared to conventional radiographs. Previously, it has been shown that combining phase retrieval with computed tomography (CT) can increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by up to two orders of magnitude over conventional CT at the same radiation dose, without loss of image quality. Our experiments reveal that as radiation dose decreases, the relative improvement in SNR increases. We discovered this enhancement can be traded for a reduction in dose greater than the square of the gain in SNR. Upon reducing the dose 300 fold, the phase-retrieved SNR was still almost 10 times larger than the absorption contrast data. This reveals the potential for dose reduction factors in the tens of thousands without loss in image quality, which would have a profound impact on medical and industrial imaging applications.

We retrieve depth information (moments) of an object using partially coherent fields and defocus induced holographic contrast. Our analysis leads to a form of tomography that does not require sample or source rotation. Here the role and influence of aberrations in optical imaging systems employing partially coherent complex scalar fields is studied. Imaging systems require aberrations to yield contrast in the output image. For linear shift-invariant optical systems, we develop an expression for the output cross-spectral density under the space-frequency formulation of statistically stationary partially coherentfields. We also develop expressions for the output cross{spectral density and associated spectral density for weak-phase, weak-phase-amplitude, and single-material objects in one transverse spatial dimension.

Plant domestication involved a process of selection through human agency of a series of traits collectively termed the domestication syndrome. Current debate concerns the pace at which domesticated plants emerged from cultivated wild populations and how many genes were involved. Here we present simulations that test how many genes could have been involved by considering the cost of selection. We demonstrate the selection load that can be endured by populations increases with decreasing selection coefficients and greater numbers of loci down to values of about s = 0.005, causing a driving force that increases the number of loci under selection. As the number of loci under selection increases, an effect of co-selection increases resulting in individual unlinked loci being fixed more rapidly in out-crossing populations, representing a second driving force to increase the number of loci under selection. In inbreeding systems co-selection results in interference and reduced rates of fixation but does not reduce the size of the selection load that can be endured. These driving forces result in an optimum pace of genome evolution in which 50-100 loci are the most that could be under selection in a cultivation regime. Furthermore, the simulations do not preclude the existence of selective sweeps but demonstrate that they come at a cost of the selection load that can be endured and consequently a reduction of the capacity of plants to adapt to new environments, which may contribute to the explanation of why selective sweeps have been so rarely detected in genome studies.

The Harmonic Einstein equation is the vacuum Einstein equation supplemented by a gauge fixing term which we take to be that of DeTurck. For static black holes analytically continued to Riemannian manifolds without boundary at the horizon this equation has previously been shown to be elliptic, and Ricci flow and Newton's method provide good numerical algorithms to solve it. Here we extend these techniques to the arbitrary cohomogeneity stationary case which must be treated in Lorentzian signature. For stationary spacetimes with globally timelike Killing vector the Harmonic Einstein equation is elliptic. In the presence of horizons and ergo-regions it is less obviously so. Motivated by the Rigidity theorem we study a class of stationary black hole spacetimes, considered previously by Harmark, general enough to include the asymptotically flat case in higher dimensions. We argue the Harmonic Einstein equation consistently truncates to this class of spacetimes giving an elliptic problem. The Killing horizons and axes of rotational symmetry are boundaries for this problem and we determine boundary conditions there. As a simple example we numerically construct 4D rotating black holes in a cavity using Anderson's boundary conditions. We prove that on a certain class of smooth complex varieties (those with "affine even stratifications"), the category of mixed Hodge modules is "almost" Koszul: it becomes Koszul after a few unwanted extensions are eliminated. We also give an equivalence between perverse sheaves on such a variety and modules for a certain graded ring, obtaining a formality result as a corollary. Cohomological induction gives an algebraic method for constructing representations of a real reductive Lie group $G$ from irreducible representations of reductive subgroups. Beilinson-Bernstein localization alternatively gives a geometric method for constructing Harish-Chandra modules for $G$ from certain representations of a Cartan subgroup. The duality theorem of Hecht, Mili\vci\'c, Schmid and Wolf establishes a relationship between modules cohomologically induced from minimal parabolics and the cohomology of the $\ms{D}$-modules on the complex flag variety for $G$ determined by the Beilinson-Bernstein construction. The main results of this paper give a generalization of the duality theorem to partial flag varieties, which recovers cohomologically induced modules arising from nonminimal parabolics., Comment: 21 pages

We utilize a single atom substitution technique with spectroscopic imaging in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to visualize the anisotropic spatial structure of magnetic and non-magnetic transition metal acceptor states in the GaAs (110) surface. The character of the defect states play a critical role in the properties of the semiconductor, the localization of the states influencing such things as the onset of the metal-insulator transition, and in dilute magnetic semiconductors the mechanism and strength of magnetic interactions that lead to the emergence of ferromagnetism. We study these states in the GaAs surface finding remarkable similarities between the shape of the acceptor state wavefunction for Mn, Fe, Co and Zn dopants, which is determined by the GaAs host and is generally reproduced by tight binding calculations of Mn in bulk GaAs [Tang, J.M. & Flatte, M.E., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 047201 (2004)]. The similarities originate from the antibonding nature of the acceptor states that arise from the hybridization of the impurity d-levels with the host. A second deeper in-gap state is also observed for Fe and Co that can be explained by the symmetry breaking of the surface., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

We propose a general framework for solving the Einstein equation for static and Euclidean metrics. First, we address the issue of gauge-fixing by borrowing from the Ricci-flow literature the so-called DeTurck trick, which renders the Einstein equation strictly elliptic and generalizes the usual harmonic-coordinate gauge. We then study two algorithms, Ricci-flow and Newton's method, for solving the resulting Einstein-DeTurck equation. We illustrate the use of these methods by studying localized black holes and non-uniform black strings in five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory, improving on previous calculations of their thermodynamic and geometric properties. We study spectra of various operators for these solutions, in particular finding negative modes of the Lichnerowicz operator. We classify the localized solutions into two branches that meet at a minimum temperature. We find good evidence for a merger between the localized and non-uniform solutions. The discovery of ferromagnetism in Mn doped GaAs [1] has ignited interest in the development of semiconductor technologies based on electron spin and has led to several proof-of-concept spintronic devices [2-4]. A major hurdle for realistic applications of (Ga,Mn)As, or other dilute magnetic semiconductors, remains their below room-temperature ferromagnetic transition temperature. Enhancing ferromagnetism in semiconductors requires understanding the mechanisms for interaction between magnetic dopants, such as Mn, and identifying the circumstances in which ferromagnetic interactions are maximized [5]. Here we report the use of a novel atom-by-atom substitution technique with the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) to perform the first controlled atomic scale study of the interactions between isolated Mn acceptors mediated by the electronic states of GaAs. High-resolution STM measurements are used to visualize the GaAs electronic states that participate in the Mn-Mn interaction and to quantify the interaction strengths as a function of relative position and orientation. Our experimental findings, which can be explained using tight-binding model calculations, reveal a strong dependence of ferromagnetic interaction on crystallographic orientation. This anisotropic interaction can potentially be exploited by growing oriented Ga1-xMnxAs structures to enhance the ferromagnetic transition temperature beyond that achieved in randomly doped samples. Our experimental methods also provide a realistic approach to create precise arrangements of single spins as coupled quantum bits for memory or information processing purposes.
