Current and upcoming generations of visible-shortwave infrared (VSWIR) imaging spectrometers promise unprecedented capacity to quantify Earth System processes across the globe. However, reliable cloud screening remains a fundamental challenge for these instruments, where traditional spatial and temporal approaches are limited by cloud variability and limited temporal coverage. The Spectroscopic Transformer (SpecTf) addresses these challenges with a spectroscopy-specific deep learning architecture that performs cloud detection using only spectral information (no spatial or temporal data are required). By treating spectral measurements as sequences rather than image channels, SpecTf learns fundamental physical relationships without relying on spatial context. Our experiments demonstrate that SpecTf significantly outperforms the current baseline approach implemented for the EMIT instrument, and performs comparably with other machine learning methods with orders of magnitude fewer learned parameters. Critically, we demonstrate SpecTf's inherent interpretability through its attention mechanism, revealing physically meaningful spectral features the model has learned. Finally, we present SpecTf's potential for cross-instrument generalization by applying it to a different instrument on a different platform without modifications, opening the door to instrument agnostic data driven algorithms for future imaging spectroscopy tasks., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, in review. Moir\'e heterostructures consisting of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hetero- and homobilayers have emerged as a promising material platform to study correlated electronic states. Optical signatures of strong correlations in the form of Mott-Wigner states and fractional Chern insulators have already been observed in TMD monolayers and their twisted bilayers. In this work, we use a moir\'e substrate containing a twisted hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) interface to externally generate a superlattice potential for the TMD layer: the periodic structure of ferroelectric domains in h-BN effects a purely electrostatic potential for charge carriers. We find direct evidence for the induced moir\'e potential in the emergence of new excitonic resonances at integer fillings, and our observation of an enhancement of the trion binding energy by $\simeq$ 3 meV. A theoretical model for exciton-electron interactions allows us to directly determine the moir\'e potential modulation of 30$\pm$5 meV from the measured trion binding energy shift. We obtain direct evidence for charge order linked to electronic Mott-Wigner states at filling factors $\nu$ = 1/3 and $\nu$ = 2/3 through the associated exciton Umklapp resonances., Comment: 6 + 11 pages, 4 + 15 figures

Software engineering (SE) evolves rapidly, with changing technology and industry expectations. The curriculum review bodies (e.g., ACM and IEEE-CS working groups) respond well but can have refresh cycles measured in years. For Computer Science and SE educators to be agile, predictive, and adapt to changing technology trends, judicious use of gray literature (GL) can be helpful. Other fields have found GL useful in bridging academic research and industry needs. GL can be extended to SE to aid faculty preparing students for industry. We address two questions: first, given the velocity of technical change, do current curricular guidelines accurately reflect industry practice and need for our graduates? Second, how can we track current and emerging trends to capture relevant competencies? We argue a study of the scholarly literature will have a limited impact on our understanding of current and emerging trends and curriculum designers would do well to utilize GL. We close with recommendations for SE educators.

Magnetic properties of materials ranging from conventional ferromagnetic metals to strongly correlated materials such as cuprates originate from Coulomb exchange interactions. The existence of alternate mechanisms for magnetism that could naturally facilitate electrical control have been discussed theoretically but an experimental demonstration in an extended system has been missing. Here, we investigate MoSe$_2$/WS$_2$ van der Waals heterostructures in the vicinity of Mott insulator states of electrons forming a frustrated triangular lattice and observe direct evidence for magnetic correlations originating from a kinetic mechanism. By directly measuring electronic magnetization through the strength of the polarization-selective attractive polaron resonance, we find that when the Mott state is electron doped the system exhibits ferromagnetic correlations in agreement with the Nagaoka mechanism., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for charged lepton flavor violation via the coherent conversion process mu- N --> e- N with a sensitivity approximately four orders of magnitude better than the current world's best limits for this process. The experiment's sensitivity offers discovery potential over a wide array of new physics models and probes mass scales well beyond the reach of the LHC. We describe herein the preliminary design of the proposed Mu2e experiment. Particle accelerators pushed the limits of our knowledge in search of the answers to most fundamental questions about micro-world and our Universe. In these pursuits, accelerators progressed to higher and higher energies and particle beam intensities as well as increasingly smaller and smaller beam sizes. As the result, modern existing and planned energy frontier accelerators demand very tight tolerances on alignment and stability of their elements: magnets, accelerating cavities, vacuum chambers, etc. In this article we describe the instruments developed for and used in such accelerators as Fermilab's Tevatron (FNAL, Batavia, IL USA) and for the studies toward an International Linear Collider (ILC). The instrumentation includes Hydrostatic Level Sensors (HLS) for very low frequency measurements. We present design features of the sensors, outline their technical parameters, describe test and calibration procedures and discuss different regimes of operation. Experimental results of the ground motion measurements with these detectors will be presented in subsequent paper.

The measurement of the longitudinal behavior of the accelerated particle beams at Fermilab is crucial to the optimization and control of the beam and the maximizing of the integrated luminosity for the particle physics experiments. Longitudinal measurements in the Tevatron and Main Injector synchrotrons are based on the analysis of signals from resistive wall current monitors. This article describes the signal processing performed by a 2 GHz-bandwidth oscilloscope together with a computer running a LabVIEW program which calculates the longitudinal beam parameters.

The Cosmic Ray Observatory Project (CROP) at University of Nebraska/Lincoln and the Washington Area Large-scale Time coincidence Array (WALTA) at University of Washington/Seattle are among several outreach projects siting cosmic-ray detectors at local high schools in cities around North America, to study the origins and interactions of high-energy cosmic rays. In a collaboration between QuarkNet, the outreach program based at Fermilab, CROP, and WALTA, a low-cost data acquisition electronics card has been developed to collect and synchronize the data from each detector site. The cost for each card is under US$500 for parts, functionally replacing much more expensive electronics crates and modules at each high school site. The card has 4 analog discriminator inputs for photo-multiplier tube signals, a 4-channel Time-to-Digital converter for local coincidence and time-over-threshold measurements at 0.75 ns resolution, programmable trigger logic via a CPLD and microcontroller, and a built-in low-cost GPS receiver/antenna module (via external cable) to provide event trigger time stamps at better than 100 ns accuracy. Temperature sensors and a barometer are also integrated to record environmental data along with the counter data. The card connects to any PC or laptop via a standard RS-232 serial port for data output and control. The microcontroller and CPLD are field programmable and therefore make the card functionality flexible and easy to upgrade., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Presented by R. J.
