Existing datasets for 3D hand-object interaction are limited either in the data cardinality, data variations in interaction scenarios, or the quality of annotations. In this work, we present a comprehensive new training dataset for hand-object interaction called HOGraspNet. It is the only real dataset that captures full grasp taxonomies, providing grasp annotation and wide intraclass variations. Using grasp taxonomies as atomic actions, their space and time combinatorial can represent complex hand activities around objects. We select 22 rigid objects from the YCB dataset and 8 other compound objects using shape and size taxonomies, ensuring coverage of all hand grasp configurations. The dataset includes diverse hand shapes from 99 participants aged 10 to 74, continuous video frames, and a 1.5M RGB-Depth of sparse frames with annotations. It offers labels for 3D hand and object meshes, 3D keypoints, contact maps, and \emph{grasp labels}. Accurate hand and object 3D meshes are obtained by fitting the hand parametric model (MANO) and the hand implicit function (HALO) to multi-view RGBD frames, with the MoCap system only for objects. Note that HALO fitting does not require any parameter tuning, enabling scalability to the dataset's size with comparable accuracy to MANO. We evaluate HOGraspNet on relevant tasks: grasp classification and 3D hand pose estimation. The result shows performance variations based on grasp type and object class, indicating the potential importance of the interaction space captured by our dataset. The provided data aims at learning universal shape priors or foundation models for 3D hand-object interaction. We focus on constrained, $L$-smooth, potentially stochastic and nonconvex-nonconcave min-max problems either satisfying $\rho$-cohypomonotonicity or admitting a solution to the $\rho$-weakly Minty Variational Inequality (MVI), where larger values of the parameter $\rho>0$ correspond to a greater degree of nonconvexity. These problem classes include examples in two player reinforcement learning, interaction dominant min-max problems, and certain synthetic test problems on which classical min-max algorithms fail. It has been conjectured that first-order methods can tolerate a value of $\rho$ no larger than $\frac{1}{L}$, but existing results in the literature have stagnated at the tighter requirement $\rho < \frac{1}{2L}$. With a simple argument, we obtain optimal or best-known complexity guarantees with cohypomonotonicity or weak MVI conditions for $\rho < \frac{1}{L}$. First main insight for the improvements in the convergence analyses is to harness the recently proposed $\textit{conic nonexpansiveness}$ property of operators. Second, we provide a refined analysis for inexact Halpern iteration that relaxes the required inexactness level to improve some state-of-the-art complexity results even for constrained stochastic convex-concave min-max problems. Third, we analyze a stochastic inexact Krasnosel'ski\u{\i}-Mann iteration with a multilevel Monte Carlo estimator when the assumptions only hold with respect to a solution.

This paper investigates reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided frequency division duplexing (FDD) communication systems. Since the downlink and uplink signals are simultaneously transmitted in FDD, the phase shifts at the RIS should be designed to support both transmissions. Considering a single-user multiple-input multiple-output system, we formulate a weighted sum-rate maximization problem to jointly maximize the downlink and uplink system performance. To tackle the non-convex optimization problem, we adopt an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm, in which two phase shift optimization techniques are developed to handle the unit-modulus constraints induced by the reflection coefficients at the RIS. The first technique exploits the manifold optimization-based algorithm, while the second uses a lower-complexity AO approach. Fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) is a promising cryptographic primitive for realizing private neural network inference (PI) services by allowing a client to fully offload the inference task to a cloud server while keeping the client data oblivious to the server. This work proposes NeuJeans, an FHE-based solution for the PI of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). NeuJeans tackles the critical problem of the enormous computational cost for the FHE evaluation of convolutional layers (conv2d), mainly due to the high cost of data reordering and bootstrapping. We first propose an encoding method introducing nested structures inside encoded vectors for FHE, which enables us to develop efficient conv2d algorithms with reduced data reordering costs. However, the new encoding method also introduces additional computations for conversion between encoding methods, which could negate its advantages. We discover that fusing conv2d with bootstrapping eliminates such computations while reducing the cost of bootstrapping. Then, we devise optimized execution flows for various types of conv2d and apply them to end-to-end implementation of CNNs. NeuJeans accelerates the performance of conv2d by up to 5.68 times compared to state-of-the-art FHE-based PI work and performs the PI of a CNN at the scale of ImageNet (ResNet18) within a mere few seconds, Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Incorporating fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) into the inference process of a convolutional neural network (CNN) draws enormous attention as a viable approach for achieving private inference (PI). FHE allows delegating the entire computation process to the server while ensuring the confidentiality of sensitive client-side data. However, practical FHE implementation of a CNN faces significant hurdles, primarily due to FHE's substantial computational and memory overhead. To address these challenges, we propose a set of optimizations, which includes GPU/ASIC acceleration, an efficient activation function, and an optimized packing scheme. We evaluate our method using the ResNet models on the CIFAR-10 and ImageNet datasets, achieving several orders of magnitude improvement compared to prior work and reducing the latency of the encrypted CNN inference to 1.4 seconds on an NVIDIA A100 GPU. Recent 4D shape representations model continuous temporal evolution of implicit shapes by (1) learning query flows without leveraging shape and articulation priors or (2) decoding shape occupancies separately for each time value. Thus, they do not effectively capture implicit correspondences between articulated shapes or regularize jittery temporal deformations. In this work, we present FourierHandFlow, which is a spatio-temporally continuous representation for human hands that combines a 3D occupancy field with articulation-aware query flows represented as Fourier series. Given an input RGB sequence, we aim to learn a fixed number of Fourier coefficients for each query flow to guarantee smooth and continuous temporal shape dynamics. To effectively model spatio-temporal deformations of articulated hands, we compose our 4D representation based on two types of Fourier query flow: (1) pose flow that models query dynamics influenced by hand articulation changes via implicit linear blend skinning and (2) shape flow that models query-wise displacement flow. In the experiments, our method achieves state-of-the-art results on video-based 4D reconstruction while being computationally more efficient than the existing 3D/4D implicit shape representations. We additionally show our results on motion inter- and extrapolation and texture transfer using the learned correspondences of implicit shapes. To the best of our knowledge, FourierHandFlow is the first neural 4D continuous hand representation learned from RGB videos. We describe two approximation methods designed to capture the leading behavior of the low-energy tail of the momentum-dependent spectral density $A(\mathbf{k}, E)$ and the tunneling density of states $D(E)$ for an injected particle, such as an electron or an exciton, interacting with a bath of phonons at a non-zero initial temperature $T$, including quantum corrections due to the non-zero frequencies of the relevant phonons. In our imaginary-time-dependent Hartree (ITDH) approximation, we consider a situation where the particle is injected into a specified coherent state of the phonon system, and we show how one can use the ITDH approximation to obtain the correlation function $C(\tau)$ for that initial state. The thermal average $C(\tau)$ is obtained, in principle, by integrating the result over all possible initial phonon coherent states, weighted by a thermal distribution. However, in the low-energy tail, one can obtain a good first approximation by considering only initial states near the one that maximizes the integrand. Our second approximation, the fixed-wave-function (FWF) approximation, assumes that the wave function of the injected particle evolves instantaneously to a wave function which then is independent of time, while the phonon system continues to evolve due to interaction with the particle. We discuss how to invert the Laplace transform and how to obtain $A(\mathbf{k},E)$ as well as $D(E)$ from the imaginary-time analysis. The FWF approximation is used to calculate $D(E)$ for a one-dimensional continuum model of a particle interacting with acoustic phonons, and effects due to the quantum motion of phonons are observed. Minimax problems are notoriously challenging to optimize. However, we present that the two-timescale extragradient method can be a viable solution. By utilizing dynamical systems theory, we show that it converges to points that satisfy the second-order necessary condition of local minimax points, under mild conditions that the two-timescale gradient descent ascent fails to work. This work provably improves upon all previous results on finding local minimax points, by eliminating a crucial assumption that the Hessian with respect to the maximization variable is nondegenerate., Comment: 40 pages, 5 figures. Convolutional neural network (CNN) inference using fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) is a promising private inference (PI) solution due to the capability of FHE that enables offloading the whole computation process to the server while protecting the privacy of sensitive user data. Prior FHE-based CNN (HCNN) work has demonstrated the feasibility of constructing deep neural network architectures such as ResNet using FHE. Despite these advancements, HCNN still faces significant challenges in practicality due to the high computational and memory overhead. To overcome these limitations, we present HyPHEN, a deep HCNN construction that incorporates novel convolution algorithms (RAConv and CAConv), data packing methods (2D gap packing and PRCR scheme), and optimization techniques tailored to HCNN construction. Such enhancements enable HyPHEN to substantially reduce the memory footprint and the number of expensive homomorphic operations, such as ciphertext rotation and bootstrapping. As a result, HyPHEN brings the latency of HCNN CIFAR-10 inference down to a practical level at 1.4 seconds (ResNet-20) and demonstrates HCNN ImageNet inference for the first time at 14.7 seconds (ResNet-18)., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

Hierarchical text classification (HTC) is essential for various real applications. However, HTC models are challenging to develop because they often require processing a large volume of documents and labels with hierarchical taxonomy. Recent HTC models based on deep learning have attempted to incorporate hierarchy information into a model structure. Consequently, these models are challenging to implement when the model parameters increase for a large-scale hierarchy because the model structure depends on the hierarchy size. To solve this problem, we formulate HTC as a sub-hierarchy sequence generation to incorporate hierarchy information into a target label sequence instead of the model structure. Subsequently, we propose the Hierarchy DECoder (HiDEC), which decodes a text sequence into a sub-hierarchy sequence using recursive hierarchy decoding, classifying all parents at the same level into children at once. In addition, HiDEC is trained to use hierarchical path information from a root to each leaf in a sub-hierarchy composed of the labels of a target document via an attention mechanism and hierarchy-aware masking. A potential for propagation of a wave in two dimensions is constructed from a random superposition of plane waves around all propagation angles. Surprisingly, despite the lack of periodic structure, sharp Bragg diffraction of the wave is observed, analogous to a powder diffraction pattern. The scattering is partially resonant, so Fermi's golden rule does not apply. This phenomenon would be experimentally observable by sending an atomic beam into a chaotic cavity populated by a single mode laser.

Modern minimax problems, such as generative adversarial network and adversarial training, are often under a nonconvex-nonconcave setting, and developing an efficient method for such setting is of interest. Recently, two variants of the extragradient (EG) method are studied in that direction. First, a two-time-scale variant of the EG, named EG+, was proposed under a smooth structured nonconvex-nonconcave setting, with a slow $\mathcal{O}(1/k)$ rate on the squared gradient norm, where $k$ denotes the number of iterations. Second, another variant of EG with an anchoring technique, named extra anchored gradient (EAG), was studied under a smooth convex-concave setting, yielding a fast $\mathcal{O}(1/k^2)$ rate on the squared gradient norm. Built upon EG+ and EAG, this paper proposes a two-time-scale EG with anchoring, named fast extragradient (FEG), that has a fast $\mathcal{O}(1/k^2)$ rate on the squared gradient norm for smooth structured nonconvex-nonconcave problems; the corresponding saddle-gradient operator satisfies the negative comonotonicity condition. This paper further develops its backtracking line-search version, named FEG-A, for the case where the problem parameters are not available. Minimax problems, such as generative adversarial network, adversarial training, and fair training, are widely solved by a multi-step gradient descent ascent (MGDA) method in practice. However, its convergence guarantee is limited. In this paper, inspired by the primal-dual hybrid gradient method, we propose a new semi-anchoring (SA) technique for the MGDA method. This makes the MGDA method find a stationary point of a structured nonconvex-nonconcave composite minimax problem; its saddle-subdifferential operator satisfies the weak Minty variational inequality condition. The resulting method, named SA-MGDA, is built upon a Bregman proximal point method. We further develop its backtracking line-search version, and its non-Euclidean version for smooth adaptable functions. Numerical experiments, including a fair classification training, are provided.

6D pose estimation refers to object recognition and estimation of 3D rotation and 3D translation. The key technology for estimating 6D pose is to estimate pose by extracting enough features to find pose in any environment. Previous methods utilized depth information in the refinement process or were designed as a heterogeneous architecture for each data space to extract feature. However, these methods are limited in that they cannot extract sufficient feature. Therefore, this paper proposes a Point Attention Module that can efficiently extract powerful feature from RGB-D. In our Module, attention map is formed through a Geometric Attention Path(GAP) and Channel Attention Path(CAP). In GAP, it is designed to pay attention to important information in geometric information, and CAP is designed to pay attention to important information in Channel information. We show that the attention module efficiently creates feature representations without significantly increasing computational complexity. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods in benchmarks, YCB Video and LineMod. In addition, the attention module was applied to the classification task, and it was confirmed that the performance significantly improved compared to the existing model., Comment: 11 pages, 5figures

We develop the coherent state representation of lattice vibrations to describe their interactions with charge carriers. In direct analogy to quantum optics, the coherent state representation leads from quantized lattice vibrations (phonons) naturally to a quasiclassical field limit, i.e., the deformation potential. To an electron, the deformation field is a sea of hills and valleys, as ``real'' as any external field, morphing and propagating at the sound speed, and growing in magnitude with temperature. In this disordered potential landscape, the charge carrier dynamics is treated nonperturbatively, preserving their coherence beyond single collision events. We show the coherent state picture agrees exactly with the conventional Fock state picture in perturbation theory. Furthermore, it goes beyond by revealing aspects that the conventional theory could not explain: transient localization even at high temperatures by charge carrier coherence effects, and band tails in the density of states due to the self-generated disorder (deformation) potential in a pure crystal. The coherent state paradigm of lattice vibrations supplies tools for probing important questions in condensed matter physics as in quantum optics.

One of the most crucial challenges in question answering (QA) is the scarcity of labeled data, since it is costly to obtain question-answer (QA) pairs for a target text domain with human annotation. An alternative approach to tackle the problem is to use automatically generated QA pairs from either the problem context or from large amount of unstructured texts (e.g. Wikipedia). In this work, we propose a hierarchical conditional variational autoencoder (HCVAE) for generating QA pairs given unstructured texts as contexts, while maximizing the mutual information between generated QA pairs to ensure their consistency. We validate our Information Maximizing Hierarchical Conditional Variational AutoEncoder (Info-HCVAE) on several benchmark datasets by evaluating the performance of the QA model (BERT-base) using only the generated QA pairs (QA-based evaluation) or by using both the generated and human-labeled pairs (semi-supervised learning) for training, against state-of-the-art baseline models. The results show that our model obtains impressive performance gains over all baselines on both tasks, using only a fraction of data for training., Comment: ACL 2020

This paper proposes an accelerated proximal point method for maximally monotone operators. The proof is computer-assisted via the performance estimation problem approach. The proximal point method includes various well-known convex optimization methods, such as the proximal method of multipliers and the alternating direction method of multipliers, and thus the proposed acceleration has wide applications. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the accelerating behaviors.

In 1926, E. Schroedinger published a paper solving his new time dependent wave equation for a displaced ground state in a harmonic oscillator (now called a coherent state). He showed that the parameters describing the mean position and mean momentum of the wave packet obey the equations of motion of the classical oscillator while retaining its width. This was a qualitatively new kind of correspondence principle, differing from those leading up to quantum mechanics. Schroedinger surely knew that this correspondence would extend to an N-dimensional harmonic oscillator. This Schroedinger Correspondence Principle is an extremely intuitive and powerful way to approach many aspects of harmonic solids including anharmonic corrections.

This paper optimizes the step coefficients of first-order methods for smooth convex minimization in terms of the worst-case convergence bound (i.e., efficiency) of the decrease in the gradient norm. This work is based on the performance estimation problem approach. The worst-case gradient bound of the resulting method is optimal up to a constant for large-dimensional smooth convex minimization problems, under the initial bounded condition on the cost function value. This paper then illustrates that the proposed method has a computationally efficient form that is similar to the optimized gradient method.

First-order methods with momentum such as Nesterov's fast gradient method are very useful for convex optimization problems, but can exhibit undesirable oscillations yielding slow convergence rates for some applications. An adaptive restarting scheme can improve the convergence rate of the fast gradient method, when the parameter of a strongly convex cost function is unknown or when the iterates of the algorithm enter a locally strongly convex region. Recently, we introduced the optimized gradient method, a first-order algorithm that has an inexpensive per-iteration computational cost similar to that of the fast gradient method, yet has a worst-case cost function rate that is twice faster than that of the fast gradient method and that is optimal for large-dimensional smooth convex problems. Building upon the success of accelerating the fast gradient method using adaptive restart, this paper investigates similar heuristic acceleration of the optimized gradient method. We first derive a new first-order method that resembles the optimized gradient method for strongly convex quadratic problems with known function parameters, yielding a linear convergence rate that is faster than that of the analogous version of the fast gradient method. We then provide a heuristic analysis and numerical experiments that illustrate that adaptive restart can accelerate the convergence of the optimized gradient method. Numerical results also illustrate that adaptive restart is helpful for a proximal version of the optimized gradient method for nonsmooth composite convex functions.

We consider minimizing the composite function that consists of a strongly convex function and a convex function. The fast dual proximal gradient (FDPG) method decreases the dual function with a rate $O(1/k^2)$, leading to a rate $O(1/k)$ for decreasing the primal function. We propose a generalized FDPG method that guarantees an $O(1/k^{1.5})$ rate for the dual proximal gradient norm decrease. By relating this to the primal function decrease, the proposed approach decreases the primal function with the improved $O(1/k^{1.5})$ rate.

This paper provides a new way of developing the fast iterative shrinkage/thresholding algorithm (FISTA) that is widely used for minimizing composite convex functions with a nonsmooth term such as the $\ell_1$ regularizer. In particular, this paper shows that FISTA corresponds to an optimized approach to accelerating the proximal gradient method with respect to a worst-case bound of the cost function. This paper then proposes a new algorithm that is derived by instead optimizing the step coefficients of the proximal gradient method with respect to a worst-case bound of the composite gradient mapping. This paper generalizes the optimized gradient method (OGM) that achieves the optimal worst-case cost function bound of first-order methods for smooth convex minimization. Specifically, this paper studies a generalized formulation of OGM and analyzes its worst-case rates in terms of both the function value and the norm of the function gradient. This paper also develops a new algorithm called OGM-OG that is in the generalized family of OGM and that has the best known analytical worst-case bound with rate $O(1/N^{1.5})$ on the decrease of the gradient norm among fixed-step first-order methods. This paper also proves that Nesterov's fast gradient method has an $O(1/N^{1.5})$ worst-case gradient norm rate but with constant larger than OGM-OG. The proof is based on the worst-case analysis called Performance Estimation Problem.

This paper considers the problem of unconstrained minimization of smooth convex functions having Lipschitz continuous gradients with known Lipschitz constant. We recently proposed an optimized gradient method (OGM) for this problem and showed that it has a worst-case convergence bound for the cost function decrease that is twice as small as that of Nesterov's fast gradient method (FGM), yet has a similarly efficient practical implementation. Drori showed recently that OGM has optimal complexity over the general class of first-order methods. This optimality makes it important to study fully the convergence properties of OGM. The previous worst-case convergence bound for OGM was derived for only the last iterate of a secondary sequence. This paper provides an analytic convergence bound for the primary sequence generated by OGM. We then discuss additional convergence properties of OGM, including the interesting fact that OGM has two types of worst-case functions: a piecewise affine-quadratic function and a quadratic function. These results help complete the theory of optimal first-order methods for smooth convex minimization.

We introduce new optimized first-order methods for smooth unconstrained convex minimization. Drori and Teboulle recently described a numerical method for computing the $N$-iteration optimal step coefficients in a class of first-order algorithms that includes gradient methods, heavy-ball methods, and Nesterov's fast gradient methods. However, Drori and Teboulle's numerical method is computationally expensive for large $N$, and the corresponding numerically optimized first-order algorithm requires impractical memory and computation for large-scale optimization problems. In this paper, we propose optimized first-order algorithms that achieve a convergence bound that is two times smaller than for Nesterov's fast gradient methods; our bound is found analytically and refines the numerical bound. Furthermore, the proposed optimized first-order methods have efficient recursive forms that are remarkably similar to Nesterov's fast gradient methods.
