Search

Nuclear mass measurements have recently been extended conspicuously to proton-rich region in the upper $fp$ shell. The new data are utilized to study isospin symmetry breaking phenomena}using Coulomb displacement energy (CDE) and triplet displacement energy (TDE) as probes. The new mass data, either measured for the first time or with greatly improved accuracy, removed several previously found ``anomalies" in the systematical behavior in the $fp$ shell. Remarkably, more regular odd-even staggering patterns can be established in both CDE and TDE, calling for a uniform explanation in terms of isospin-nonconserving (INC) forces across the $sd$, $f_{7/2}$, and upper $fp$ shells. By extending the large-scale shell-model calculation [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{110}, 172505 (2013)] to the upper $fp$-shell region, we found that, in order to describe the new data, the same INC force is required as previously used for the $f_{7/2}$ shell. Especially, we propose the $T=1$ TDE for those triplet nuclei, that have $pp$, $nn$, and $pn$ pairs on top of a common even-even $N=Z$ core, to be a good indicator for the isotensor component of isospin violating interactions, which is estimated here to be 150 keV., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

The region of $N\approx Z\approx 40$ has long been associated with strongly deformed nuclear configurations. The presence of this strong deformation was recently confirmed through lifetime measurements in $N\approx Z$ Sr and Zr nuclei. Theoretically, however, these nuclei present a challenge due to the vast valence space required to incorporate all deformation driving interactions. Recent state-of-the-art predictions indicate a near axial prolate deformation for $N=Z$ and $N=Z+2$ nuclei between $N=Z=36$ and $N=Z=40$. In this work we investigate the shores of this island of deformation through a sub-barrier Coulomb excitation study of the $N=Z+4$ nucleus, \textsuperscript{80}Sr. Extracting a spectroscopic quadrupole moment of $Q_s(2^+_1) = 0.45^{+0.83}_{-0.88}$~eb, we find that \textsuperscript{80}Sr is inconsistent with significant axial prolate deformation. This indicates that the predicted region of strong prolate deformation around $N=Z=40$ is tightly constrained to the quartet of nuclei: \textsuperscript{76,78}Sr and \textsuperscript{78,80}Zr., Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B

The discovery of multiple superconducting phases in UTe2 boosted research on correlated-electron physics. This heavy-fermion paramagnet was rapidly identified as a reference compound to study the interplay between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity with multiple degrees of freedom. The proximity to a ferromagnetic quantum phase transition was initially proposed as a driving force to triplet-pairing superconductivity. However, we find here that long-range incommensurate antiferromagnetic order is established under pressure. The propagation vector km = (0.07,0.33,1) of the antiferromagnetic phase is close to a wavevector where antiferromagnetic fluctuations have previously been observed at ambient pressure. These elements support that UTe2 is a nearly-antiferromagnet at ambient pressure. Our work appeals for theories modelling the evolution of the magnetic interactions and electronic properties, driving a correlated paramagnetic regime at ambient pressure to a long-range antiferromagnetic order under pressure. We investigate the spin dynamics in the superconducting phase of UTe$_{2}$ by triple-axis inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. At the wave-vector $\bf{k_1}$=(0, 0.57, 0), where the normal state antiferromagnetic correlations are peaked, a modification of the excitation spectrum is evidenced, on crossing the superconducting transition, with a reduction of the relaxation rate together with the development of an inelastic peak at $\Omega$ $\approx$ 1 meV. The low dimensional nature and the the $a$-axis polarization of the fluctuations, that characterise the normal state, are essentially maintained below $T_{sc}$. The high ratio $\Omega/k_{B}T_{sc}$ $\approx$ 7.2 contrasts with the most common behaviour in heavy fermion superconductors., Comment: 3 figures, 1 table

Inelastic-neutron-scattering measurements were performed on a single crystal of the heavy-fermion paramagnet UTe$_2$ above its superconducting temperature. We confirm the presence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations with the incommensurate wavevector $\mathbf{k}_1=(0,0.57,0)$. A quasielastic signal is found, whose momentum-transfer dependence is compatible with fluctuations of magnetic moments $\mu\parallel\mathbf{a}$, with a sine-wave modulation of wavevector $\mathbf{k}_1$ and in-phase moments on the nearest U atoms. Low dimensionality of the magnetic fluctuations, consequence of the ladder structure, is indicated by weak correlations along the direction $\mathbf{c}$. These fluctuations saturate below the temperature $T_1^*\simeq15$~K, in possible relation with anomalies observed in thermodynamic, electrical-transport and nuclear-magnetic-resonance measurements. The absence or weakness of ferromagnetic fluctuations, in our data collected at temperatures down to 2.1 K and energy transfers from 0.6 to 7.5 meV, is emphasized. ALMA has been operating since 2011, but has not yet been populated with the full suite of intended frequency bands. In particular, ALMA Band 2 (67-90 GHz) is the final band in the original ALMA band definition to be approved for production. We aim to produce a wideband, tuneable, sideband-separating receiver with 28 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth per polarisation operating in the sky frequency range 67-116 GHz. Our design anticipates new ALMA requirements following the recommendations in the 2030 ALMA Development Roadmap. The cryogenic cartridge is designed to be compatible with the ALMA Band 2 cartridge slot, where the coldest components -- the feedhorns, orthomode transducers, and cryogenic low noise amplifiers -- operate at a temperature of 15 K. We use multiple simulation methods and tools to optimise our designs for both the passive optics and the active components. The cryogenic cartridge interfaces with a room temperature cartridge hosting the local oscillator (LO) and the downconverter module. This warm cartridge is largely based on GaAs semiconductor technology and is optimised to match the cryogenic receiver bandwidth with the required instantaneous LO tuning range. Our collaboration has designed, fabricated, and tested multiple technical solutions for each of the components, producing a state-of-the-art receiver covering the full ALMA Band 2 & 3 atmospheric window. The receiver is suitable for deployment on ALMA in the coming years, and is capable of dual-polarisation, sideband-separating observations in intermediate frequency bands spanning 4-18 GHz, for a total of 28 GHz on-sky bandwidth per polarisation channel. We conclude that the 67-116 GHz wideband implementation for ALMA Band 2 is now feasible, and this receiver is a compelling instrumental upgrade that will enhance observational capabilities and scientific reach., Comment: 23 pages, accepted for publication in A&A on 20 Dec 2019. We report first precision mass measurements of the $1/2^-$ isomeric and $9/2^+$ ground states of $^{101}$In. The determined isomeric excitation energy continues a smooth trend of odd-$A$ indium isotopes up to the immediate vicinity of $N=50$ magic number. This trend can be confirmed by dedicated shell model calculations only if the neutron configuration mixing is considered. We find that the single particle energies are different for different states of the same isotope. The presented configuration-dependent shell evolution, type II shell evolution, in odd-$A$ nuclei is discussed for the first time. The Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) is already revolutionising our understanding of the Universe. However, ALMA is not yet equipped with all of its originally planned receiver bands, which will allow it to observe over the full range of frequencies from 35-950 GHz accessible through the Earth's atmosphere. In particular Band 2 (67-90 GHz) has not yet been approved for construction. Recent technological developments in cryogenic monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) amplifier and orthomode transducer (OMT) design provide an opportunity to extend the originally planned on-sky bandwidth, combining ALMA Bands 2 and 3 into one receiver cartridge covering 67-116 GHz. The IF band definition for the ALMA project took place two decades ago, when 8 GHz of on-sky bandwidth per polarisation channel was an ambitious goal. The new receiver design we present here allows the opportunity to expand ALMA's wideband capabilities, anticipating future upgrades across the entire observatory. Expanding ALMA's instantaneous bandwidth is a high priority, and provides a number of observational advantages, including lower noise in continuum observations, the ability to probe larger portions of an astronomical spectrum for, e.g., widely spaced molecular transitions, and the ability to scan efficiently in frequency space to perform surveys where the redshift or chemical complexity of the object is not known a priori. Wider IF bandwidth also reduces uncertainties in calibration and continuum subtraction that might otherwise compromise science objectives. Approaching a quantum critical point (QCP) has been an effective route to stabilize superconductivity. While the role of magnetic QCPs has been extensively discussed, similar exploration of a structural QCP is scarce due to the lack of suitable systems with a continuous structural transition that can be conveniently tuned to 0~K. Using inelastic X-ray scattering, we examine the phonon spectrum of the nonmagnetic quasi-skutterudite (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$, which represents a precious system to explore the interplay between structural instabilities and superconductivity by tuning the Ca concentration $x$. We unambiguously detect the softening of phonon modes around the M point on cooling towards the structural transition. Intriguingly, at $x=0.85$, the soft mode energy squared at the M point extrapolates to zero at $(-5.7 \pm 7.7)$~K, providing the first compelling microscopic evidence of a structural QCP in (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$. The enhanced phonon density-of-states at low energy provides the essential ingredient for realizing strong-coupling superconductivity near the structural QCP., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The isoscalar neutron-proton pairing is thought to be important for nuclei with equal number of protons and neutrons but its manifestation in structure properties remains to be understood. We investigate the Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions for the f7/2-shell nuclei in large-scale shell-model calculations with the realistic Hamiltonian. We show that the isoscalar T=0, J=1+ neutron-proton pairing interaction plays a decisive role for the concentration of GT strengths at the first-excited 1+ state in 42Sc, and that the suppression of these strengths in 46V, 50Mn, and 54Co is mainly caused by the spin-orbit force supplemented by the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. Based on the good reproduction of the charge-exchange reaction data, we further analyze the interplay between the isoscalar and isovector pairing correlations. We conclude that even for the most promising A=42 nuclei where the SU(4) isoscalar-isovector-pairing symmetry is less broken, the probability of forming an isoscalar neutron-proton pairing condensation is less than 60% as compared to the expectation at the SU(4)-symmetry limit., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted in Phys. We investigate isospin-symmetry breaking effects in the sd-shell region with large-scale shell-model calculations, aiming to understand the recent anomalies observed in superallowed Fermi beta-decay. We begin with calculations of Coulomb displacement energies (CDE's) and triplet displacement energies (TDE's) by adding the T=1,J=0 isospin nonconserving (INC) interaction into the usual isospin-invariant Hamiltonian. It is found that CDE's and TDE's can be systematically described with high accuracy. A total number of 122 one- and two-proton separation energies are predicted accordingly, and locations of the proton drip-line and candidates for proton-emitters are thereby suggested. However, attempt to explain the anomalies in the superallowed Fermi beta-decay fails because these well-fitted T=1,J=0 INC interactions are found no effects on the nuclear matrix elements. It is demonstrated that the observed large isospin-breaking correction in the 32Cl beta-decay, the large isospin-mixing in the 31Cl beta-decay, and the small isospin-mixing in the 23Al beta-decay can be consistently understood by introducing additional T=1,J=2 INC interactions related to the s1/2 orbit., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Phys. The $\beta$ decay of the odd-odd nucleus $^{70}$Br has been investigated with the BigRIPS and EURICA setups at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory (RIBF) of the RIKEN Nishina Center. The $T=0$ ($J^{\pi}=9^+$) and $T=1$ ($J^{\pi}=0^+$) isomers have both been produced in in-flight fragmentation of $^{78}$Kr with ratios of 41.6(8)\% and 58.4(8)\%, respectively. A half-life of $t_{1/2}=2157^{+53}_{-49}$ ms has been measured for the $J^{\pi}=9^+$ isomer from $\gamma$-ray time decay analysis. Based on this result, we provide a new value of the half-life for the $J^{\pi}=0^+$ ground state of $^{70}$Br, $t_{1/2}=78.42\pm0.51$ ms, which is slightly more precise, and in excellent agreement, with the best measurement reported hitherto in the literature. For this decay, we provide the first estimate of the total branching fraction decaying through the $2^+_1$ state in the daughter nucleus $^{70}$Se, $R(2^+_1)=1.3\pm1.1\%$. We also report four new low-intensity $\gamma$-ray transitions at 661, 1103, 1561, and 1749 keV following the $\beta$ decay of the $J^{\pi}=9^+$ isomer. Based on their coincidence relationships, we tentatively propose two new excited states at 3945 and 4752 keV in $^{70}$Se with most probable spins and parities of $J^{\pi}=(6^+)$ and $(8^+)$, respectively. The observed structure is interpreted with the help of shell-model calculations, which predict a complex interplay between oblate and prolate configurations at low excitation energies.

We report on the results of powder and single crystal neutron diffraction to investigate the magnetic order in YbCo$_2$Si$_2$ below the N\'eel temperature $T_{\rm N} = 1.7~$K in detail. Two different magnetically ordered phases can clearly be distinguished. At lowest temperatures a commensurate magnetic structure with a propagation vector ${\bf k}_1 = (0.25~ 0.25~ 1)$ is found, while the intermediate phase ($T > 0.9~$K) is characterized by an incommensurate magnetic structure with ${\bf k}_2 = (0.25~ 0.086~ 1)$. The magnetic structure in YbCo$_2$Si$_2$ is in marked contrast to all other known RCo$_2$Si$_2$ compounds (R = rare earth element) likely due to some itineracy of the Yb 4f states being responsible for the magnetism., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. The recently-proposed effective shell-model interaction, the pairing-plus-multipole Hamiltonian with the monopole interaction obtained by empirical fits starting from the monopole-based universal force (PMMU), is systematically applied to nuclei of the pf5/2g9/2 shell region. It is demonstrated that the calculation describes reasonably well a wide range of experimental data, including not only the low-lying and high-excitation spectra, E2 transitions, quadrupole moments, and magnetic moments, but also the binding energies, for Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, and Se isotopes with A=64-80. As the endpoints of massive star evolution, neutron stars are enigmatic celestial objects characterized by extremely dense and exotic nuclear matter, magnetospheres with positrons (antimatter), rapid rotation and ultra-strong magnetic fields. Such an extreme environment has provided an accessible astrophysical laboratory to study physics under conditions unattainable on Earth and to tackle a range of fundamental questions related to: the aftermath of stellar evolution and the powerful explosions of massive stars, the equation of state and physics of some of the most exotic and magnetic stars in the Universe, the workings of the most powerful particle accelerators in our Galaxy and beyond, and the sources of gravitational waves that are yet to be detected. Recent observations revealed a great diversity of neutron stars, including ultra-strongly magnetized pulsars, referred to as "magnetars", and unusual types of accreting X-ray pulsars. The effect of magnetic field on the static and dynamic spin correlations in the non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si was investigated by neutron scattering. The application of a magnetic field B increases the antiferromagnetic (AFM) peak intensity. This increase depends strongly on the field direction: for B${\parallel}$[0 0 1] the intensity increases by a factor of 4.6 at a field of 6.6 T, which corresponds to more than a doubling of the AFM moment, while the moment increases by only 10 % for B${\parallel}$[1 0 0] at 5 T. This is in strong contrast to the inelastic response near the antiferromagnetic ordering vector, where no marked field variations are observed for B${\parallel}$[0 0 1] up to 3.8 T. The results reveal that the AFM state in CePt$_3$Si, which coexists with superconductivity, is distinctly different from other unconventional superconductors., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Revolution frequency measurements of individual ions in storage rings require sophisticated timing detectors. One of common approaches for such detectors is the detection of secondary electrons released from a thin foil due to penetration of the stored ions. A new method based on the analysis of intensities of secondary electrons was developed which enables determination of the charge of each ion simultaneously with the measurement of its revolution frequency. Although the mass-over-charge ratios of $^{51}$Co$^{27+}$ and $^{34}$Ar$^{18+}$ ions are almost identical, and therefore, the ions can not be resolved in a storage ring, by applying the new method the mass excess of the short-lived $^{51}$Co is determined for the first time to be ME($^{51}$Co)=-27342(48) keV. Shell-model calculations in the $fp$-shell nuclei compared to the new data indicate the need to include isospin-nonconserving forces.

Mirror energy differences (MED) and triplet energy differences (TED) in the T=1 analogue states are important probes of isospin-symmetry breaking. Inspired by the recent spectroscopic data of 66Se, we investigate these quantities for A=66-78 nuclei with large-scale shell-model calculations. For the first time, we find clear evidences suggesting that the isospin nonconserving (INC) nuclear force has a significant effect for the upper fp shell region. Detailed analysis shows that in addition to the INC force, the electromagnetic spin-orbit interaction plays an important role for the large, negative MED in A=66 and 70 and the multipole Coulomb term contributes to the negative TED in all the T=1 triplet nuclei. The INC force and its strength needed to reproduce the experimental data are compared with those from the G-matrix calculation using the modern charge-dependent nucleon-nucleon forces., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted in Phys. We propose a unified realistic shell-model Hamiltonian employing the pairing plus multipole Hamiltonian combined with the monopole interaction constructed starting from the monopole-based universal force by Otsuka it et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 012501 (2010)). It is demonstrated that the proposed PMMU model can consistently describe a large amount of spectroscopic data as well as binding energies in the pf and pf5/2g9/2 shell spaces, and could serve as a practical shell model for even heavier mass regions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted in Phys. We present a systematic investigation of the gain properties of a gas electron multiplier (GEM) foil in pure dimethyl ether (DME) at low pressures. The GEM is made from copper- clad liquid crystal polymer insulator (LCP-GEM) designed for space use, and is applied to a time projection chamber filled with low-pressure DME gas to observe the linear polarization of cosmic X-rays. We have measured gains of a 100 um-thick LCP-GEM as a function of the voltage between GEM electrodes at various gas pressures ranging from 10 to 190 Torr with 6.4 keV X-rays. The highest gain at 190 Torr is about 2x10^4, while that at 20 Torr is about 500. We find that the pressure and electric-field dependence of the GEM gain is described by the first Townsend coefficient. The energy scale from 4.5 to 8.0 keV is linear with non-linearity of less than 1.4% above 30 Torr., Comment: 3rd International Conference on Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD2013)

For mirror nuclei with masses A=42-95, the effects of isospin nonconserving nuclear forces are studied with nuclear shell model using the Coulomb displacement energy and triplet displacement energy as probes. It is shown that the characteristic behavior of the displacement energies can be well reproduced if the isovector and isotensor nuclear interactions with J=0 and T=1 are introduced into the f7/2 shell. These forces, with their strengths being found consistent with the nucleon-nucleon scattering data, tend to modify nuclear binding energies near the N=Z line. At present, no evidence is found that these forces are needed for the upper fp-shell. The anomaly in Coulomb energy differences (CED) between the isospin T=1 states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 70Br and the analogue states in its even-even partner 70Se has remained a puzzle. This is a direct manifestation of isospin-symmetry breaking in effective nuclear interactions. Here, we perform large-scale shell-model calculations for nuclei with A=66-78 using the new filter diagonalization method based on the Sakurai-Sugiura algorithm. The calculations reproduce well the experimental CED. The observed negative CED for A=70 are accounted for by the cross-shell neutron excitations from the fp-shell to the g9/2 intruder orbit with the enhanced electromagnetic spin-orbit contribution at this special nucleon number., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on poly crystalline sample of heavy-fermion compound YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ were carried out in order to obtain microscopic insights on the ground state and its magnetic field response. At zero field at 300 mK, inelastic response consists of two features: quasielastic scattering and a sharp peak at 0.6 meV. With increasing temperature, a broad peak comes up around 2.1 meV, whereas quasielastic response gets broader and the peak at 0.6 meV becomes unclear. By applying magnetic field, the quasielastic response exhibits significant broadening above 1 T, and the peak at 0.6 meV is obscure under fields. The peaks in inelastic spectra and its temperature variation can be ascribed to the suggested crystal-field model of ${{\Gamma}_6}$ - ${{\Gamma}_8}$ - ${{\Gamma}_7}$ with the overall splitting of less than 3 meV. The observed quasielastic response and its rapid broadening with magnetic field indicates that the heavy-electron state arises from the ground state doublets, and are strongly suppressed by external field in YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in J.Phys.: Conf. Recent experimental data have revealed large mirror energy differences (MED) between high-spin states in the mirror nuclei 67Se and 67As, the heaviest pair where MED have been determined so far. The MED are generally attributed to the isospin symmetry breaking caused by the Coulomb force and by the isospin nonconserving part of the nucleon-nucleon residual interaction. The different contributions of the various terms have been extensively studied in the fp shell. By employing large-scale shell model calculations, we show that the inclusion of the g9/2 orbit causes interference between the electromagnetic spin-orbit and the Coulomb monopole radial terms at high spin. The large MED are attributed to the aligned proton pair excitations from the p3/2 and f5/2 orbits to the g9/2 orbit. To discuss whether an enhanced isomer decay is a preferred process in a plasma environment it is required to know the structure of the isomer as well as the nearby states. The spin-21/2, 6.85-hour high-spin isomer in 93Mo is investigated within a shell model which well describes nuclei in this mass region. By using the obtained wave-functions which correctly reproduce the observed B(E2), B(E4), and B(M1) transitions, characteristics of the isomer are shown in comparison with the isomeric states in neighboring nuclei. Calculations suggest that these high-spin isomers are formed with almost pure single-particle-like configurations. The 93Mo 21/2^+ isomer has the predominant configuration $\pi (g_{9/2})^2_{8} \otimes \nu d_{5/2}$ lying below the 15/2^+, 17/2^+, and 19/2^+ states due to neutron-proton interaction, which is the physical origin of its long lifetime. The key E2 transition that connects the 21/2^+ isomer to the upper 17/2^+ level is predicted to be substantial (3.5 W.u), and therefore there is a real prospect for observing induced isomer deexcitation., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, accepted by Phys. Spin dynamics of the square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet, \BaMnGeO, is studied by a combination of bulk measurements, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. Easy plane type antiferromagnetic order is identified at $T \le 4.0$ K. The exchange interactions are estimated as $J_1$ = 27.8(3)${\mu}$eV and $J_2$ = 1.0(1) ${\mu}$eV, and the saturation field $H_{\rm C}$ is 9.75 T. Magnetic excitation measurements with high experimental resolution setup by triple axis neutron spectrometer reveals the instability of one magnon excitation in the field range of $0.7H_{\rm C} \lesssim H \lesssim 0.85H_{\rm C}$., Comment: 5 pgase, 5 figuers, to be published in PRB RC

The structure of neutron-rich Cr isotopes is systematically investigated by using the spherical shell model. The calculations reproduce well the known energy levels for the even-even $^{52-62}$Cr and odd-mass $^{53-59}$Cr nuclei, and predict a lowering of excitation energies around neutron number N=40. The calculated $B(E2;2_{1}^{+}\to 0_{1}^{+})$ systematics shows a pronounced collectivity around N=40; a similar characteristic behavior has been suggested for Zn and Ge isotopes. Causes for the sudden drop of the $9/2_{1}^{+}$ energy in $^{59}$Cr and the appearance of very low $0_{2}^{+}$ states around N=40 are discussed. From neutron diffraction measurements on a quasi-1D Ising-like Co$^{\rm 2+}$ spin compound BaCo$_{\rm 2}$V$_{\rm 2}$O$_{\rm 8}$, we observed an appearance of a novel type of incommensurate ordering in magnetic fields. This ordering is essentially different from the N{\' e}el-type ordering, which is expected for the classical system, and is caused by quantum fluctuation inherent in the quantum spin chain. A Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) nature characteristic of the gapless quantum 1D system is responsible for the realization of the incommensurate ordering., Comment: 4pages, 4figure

Neutron powder diffraction experiments were carried out on polycrystalline SrFe$_2$As$_2$ in order to determine the magnetic structure and its relationship with the crystallographic one. Below $T_0$=205 K, magnetic reflections appear simultaneously with the onset of the orthorhombic distortion. From a detailed Rietveld analysis, the magnetic propagation vector of SrFe$_2$As$_2$ is determined to be {\textit{\textbf{q}}}=(1 0 1); the coupling of Fe moments is antiferromagnetic along the longer $a$ direction within the Fe-As layer, and the interlayer coupling is antiferromagnetic as well. The size of the Fe magnetic moment is deduced to be 1.01(3) ${\mu}_{\rm B}$ with an orientation parallel to the a-axis. The temperature dependence of the magnetic moment shows excellent agreement with not only that of the muon precession frequency but also with that of the structural distortion, revealing the strong coupling of the columnar magnetic order and the structural distortion in SrFe$_2$As$_2$., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

X-ray and Neutron diffraction as well as muon spin relaxation and M\"ossbauer experiments performed on SrFe$_2$As$_2$ polycrystalls confirm a sharp first order transition at $T_0 = 205$,K corresponding to an orthorhombic phase distortion and to a columnar antiferromagnetic Fe ordering with a propagation vector (1,0,1), and a larger distortion and larger size of the ordered moment than reported for BaFe$_2$As$_2$. The structural and the magnetic order parameters present an remarkable similarity in their temperature dependence from $T_0$ down to low temperatures, showing that both phenomena are intimately connected. Accordingly, the size of the ordered Fe moments scale with the lattice distortion when going from SrFe$_2$As$_2$ to BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Using a shell model which is capable of describing the spectra of upper $g_{9/2}$-shell nuclei close to the $N=Z$ line, we study the structure of two isomeric states $7^{+}$ and $21^{+}$ in the odd-odd $N=Z$ nucleus $^{94}$Ag. It is found that both isomeric states exhibit a large collectivity. The $7^{+}$ state is oblately deformed, and is suggested to be a shape isomer in nature. The $21^{+}$ state becomes isomeric because of level inversion of the $19^{+}$ and $21^{+}$ states due to core excitations across the $N=Z=50$ shell gap. Calculation of spectroscopic quadrupole moment indicates clearly an enhancement in these states due to the core excitations. However, the present shell model calculation that produces the $19^{+}$-$21^{+}$ level inversion cannot accept the large-deformation picture of Mukha {\it et al.} in Nature {\bf 439}, 298 (2006)., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. By applying particle-number projection to the static-path approximation (SPA), the heat capacity and the breakdown of pairing correlations are investigated in the thermally excited, superfluid systems 172Yb, 94Mo, and 56Fe. For the heavy nucleus 172Yb, the heat capacities in both the SPA and the number-projected SPA (NPSPA) exhibit an S shape; the difference between the SPA and NPSPA heat-capacity curves is not very large and the particle-number projection thereby enhances the S shape already seen in the SPA. The temperature at which the S-shape of heat capacity curve occurs parallels the temperature of the breakdown of pairing correlations as indicated by the effective pairing gap. However, for the comparatively lighter nuclei 94Mo and 56Fe, the SPA does not produce an S-shaped heat capacity on its own; only after particle-number projection the S shape appears in the heat-capacity curve. We report a resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) study of antiferromagnetic neptunium compounds NpCoGa_5 and NpRhGa_5 at the Np M_4 and Ga K-edges. Large resonant signals of magnetic dipole character are observed below the Neel temperatures at both edges. The signals at the Np edges confirm the behaviour determined previously from neutron diffraction, i.e. the moments along [001] in NpCoGa_{5} and in NpRhGa_5 a reorientation of the moments from the c-axis direction to the ab plane. In the latter material, on application of magnetic field of 9 Tesla along the [010] direction we observe a change in the population of different [110]-type domains. We observe also a magnetic dipole signal at the Ga K-edge, similarly to the reported UGa_3 case, that can be interpreted within a semi-localized model as an orbital polarization of the Ga 4p states induced via strong hybridization with the Np 5f valence band. Quantitative analysis of the signal shows that the Ga dipole on the two different Ga sites follows closely the Np magnetic moment reorientation in NpRhGa_5. The ratios of the signals on the two inequivalent Ga sites are not the same for the different compounds., Comment: 11 figures, 2 tables submitted to Phys. Rev. B

Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}$ is a bicomponent compound that consists of Cu dimers and Fe chains with separate energy scale. By inelastic neutron scattering technique with high-energy resolution we observed the indirect Fe - Fe exchange coupling by way of the Cu dimers. The obtained parameters of the effective indirect interaction and related superexchange interactions are consistent with those estimated semi-statically. The consistency reveals that the Cu dimers play the role of nonmagnetic media in the indirect magnetic interaction., Comment: to be published in PRB rapid communication

We present a thermal and quantum-mechanical treatment of nuclear rotation using the formalism of static path approximation (SPA) plus random-phase approximation (RPA). Naive perturbation theory fails because of the presence of zero-frequency modes due to dynamical symmetry breaking. Such modes lead to infrared divergences. We show that composite zero-frequency excitations are properly treated within the collective coordinate method. The resulting perturbation theory is free from infrared divergences. Without the assumption of individual random spin vectors, we derive microscopically the spin distribution of the level density. The moment of inertia is thereby related to the spin-cutoff parameter in the usual way. Explicit calculations are performed for 56^Fe; various thermal properties are discussed. In particular, we demonstrate that the increase of the moment of inertia with increasing temperature is correlated with the suppression of pairing correlations., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

The long-standing problem of dramatic structure change near N=40 in Ge isotopes is investigated by means of large-scale shell model calculation. The analysis of simulated calculations suggests a possible understanding of the problem in terms of rapid increase in the $g_{9/2}$ proton and neutron occupation. The observed variation in excitation of the second $0^+$ state in $^{70,72,74}$Ge appears to correlate closely with the $g_{9/2}$ occupations induced by strong proton-neutron interactions. Neutron scattering experiments have revealed a field-induced antiferroquadrupolar order parameter in the Pr-based heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$. We observed the field-induced antiferromagnetic dipole moment with the propagation vector {\textit{\textbf{q}}} = (1 0 0) for the applied field direction both {\textit{\textbf{H}}}${\parallel}$[1 1 0] and [0 0 1]. For {\textit{\textbf{H}}}${\parallel}$[1 1 0] at 8 T, it should be noted that the induced antiferromagnetic moment of 0.16(10) ${\mu}_{\rm B}$/Pr orients parallel to the field within our experimental accuracy. This observation is strong evidence that the $O_{xy}$ electric quadrupole to be the primary order parameter for {\textit{\textbf{H}}}${\parallel}$[1 1 0]. A mean-field calculation, based on ${\Gamma}_1$ singlet and ${\Gamma}_4^{(2)}$ excited triplet with the $O_{xy}$ quadrupolar interaction, reproduces the induced moment direction and its field response. These facts indicate the predominance of $O_{xy}$-type antiferroquadrupolar interaction in PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure, to appear in Phys. Rev. B

The abrupt structure change from the nuclei of $N=Z \le 35$ to those of $N=Z \ge 36$ is investigated by means of shell model calculations. The basic features of the even-even and odd-odd nuclei under consideration are nicely reproduced. A sudden jump of nucleons into the upper $g_{9/2}d_{5/2}$ shell at $N=Z=36$ is found to be the main reason that causes the qualitative structure difference. The S shape of the canonical heat capacity is known as a signature of the pairing transition and along an isotopic chain it is significantly more pronounced for nuclei with an even number of neutrons than with an odd number. Although the heat capacities extracted from experimental level densities in 93-98Mo exhibit a clear S shape, they do not show such an odd-even staggering. To understand the underlying physics, we analyze thermal quantities evaluated from the partition function calculated using the static-path plus random-phase approximation (SPA+RPA) in a monopole pairing model with number-parity projection. The calculated level densities reproduce very well the experimental data and they also agree with estimates using the back-shifted Fermi-gas model. We clarify the reason why the heat capacities for Mo isotopes do not show odd-even staggering of the S shape. We also discuss thermal odd-even mass differences in 94-97Mo using the three-, four-, and five-point formula. Experimental energy spectrum and B(E2) values in 68Ni and 90Zr indicate a double-magic character in these neutron-rich nuclei with N or Z=40. The data nevertheless do not show any pronounced irregularity in two-nucleon separation energy. To understand the underlying physics, we carry out both shell-model and mean-field calculations. The shell-model calculation can well reproduce all the observations. It is understood from the mean-field results for 68Ni that the shell gap at N=40 disappears due to dynamical correlations of the isovector J=0 pairing interaction. In 90Zr, however, such a dynamic process with the J=0 pairing appears not important because of the strong contribution of the J>0 interaction. We study also level schemes in the Ni isotopes and N=50 isotones. We predict a new band built on the $0_{2}^{+}$ state in both 68Ni and 90Zr. Neutron diffraction measurements under high magnetic fields have been performed for the multiferroic compound HoMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$. At zero field, high-temperature incommensurate magnetic (HT-ICM) -- commensurate magnetic (CM) -- low-temperature incommensurate magnetic (LT-ICM) orders occur with decreasing temperature, where ferroelectric polarization arises only in the CM phase. Upon applying a magnetic field, the LT-ICM phase completely disappears and the CM phase is induced at the lowest temperature. This field-induced CM state is completely associated with the field-induced electric polarization in this material [Higashiyama {\it et al}., Phys. Rev. We apply a large-scale shell model to the study of proton-rich odd-mass nuclei with $N \approx Z$. Calculations predict unexpected structure in the $^{69}$As nucleus for which a detailed experiment was recently performed. In this odd-proton nucleus, one neutron competes with one proton for occupying the high-$j$ intruder orbit $g_{9/2}$ in the $9/2_1^+$ state and almost solely occupies the $g_{9/2}$ orbit in other low-lying positive-parity states. The T=0, J=9 one-proton-one-neutron alignment takes place in the negative-parity states with medium-high spins. Thermal behavior of isoscalar and isovector proton-neutron (pn) pairing energies at finite temperature are investigated by the shell model calculations. These pn pairing energies can be estimated by double differences of "thermal" energies which are extended from the double differences of binding energies as the indicators of pn pairing energies at zero temperature. We found that the delicate balance between isoscalar and isovector pn pairing energies at zero temperature disappears at finite temperature. When temperature rises, while the isovector pn pairing energy decreases, the isoscalar pn pairing energy rather increases. We extract pairing gap in $^{184}$W at finite temperature for the first time from the experimental level densities of $^{183}$W, $^{184}$W, and $^{185}$W using "thermal" odd-even mass difference. We found the quenching of pairing gap near the critical temperature $T_c = 0.47$ MeV in the BCS calculations. It is shown that the monopole pairing model with a deformed Woods-Saxon potential explains the reduction of the pairing correlation using the partition function with the number parity projection in the static path approximation plus random-phase approximation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PRC

Strong residual correlations between neutrons and protons in N ~ Z systems can lead to unusual structure. Using the spherical shell model, we show that a low-excitation shape isomer can occur in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 66As. This extends the picture of shape coexistence beyond even-even nuclei. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that in 66As and in the N=Z+1 nucleus 67As, a new type of isomer, which we term j-isomer, can be formed. The underlying mechanism for the isomerism formation is structure change in the isomeric states, which involves either an alignment of a neutron-proton pair from the high-j intruder orbitals, or a simultaneous occupation of these neutron and proton high-j orbitals., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures

A typical form of mass formula is re-explained in terms of nuclear structure. For $ N \approx Z $ nuclei, we propose to start with the shell model picture and to consider the T=0 $2n-2p$ ($\alpha$-like) correlations as the fundamental concept, instead of the symmetry energy. Subsequently, the symmetry energy is described on the basis of the $\alpha$-like superfluidity caused by the T=0 $2n-2p$ correlations, in parallel with the pairing energy described on the basis of the pairing superfluidity. This re-explanation gives useful insight for understanding the nuclear mass formula. The origin of the Wigner energy is also explained in an interacting boson model for the Cooper pairs in the $\alpha$-like superfluid vacuum. Adding a correction term due to the T=0 $2n-2p$ correlations, which determines the T=0 base level for nuclear masses, can improve the mass formulas in practice., Comment: to be published in Prog. We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments performed to investigate the low energy magnetic excitations on single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$. The observed excitation clearly softens at a wave vector Q = (1,0,0), which is the same as the modulation vector of the field-induced antiferro-quadrupolar ordering, and its intensity at Q = (1,0,0) is smaller than that around the zone center. This result directly evidences that this excitonic behavior is derived mainly from nonmagnetic quadrupolar interactions. Furthermore, the narrowing of the linewidths of the excitations below the superconducting transition temperature indicates the close connection between the superconductivity and the excitons., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

A study of the energies of the first excited $0^+$ states in all even-even $Z$ $\geq$ 8 nuclei reveals an anomalous behavior in some nuclei with $N$ = $Z$, $Z$ $\pm$ 2. The competition between the isovector (T=1) and isoscalar (T=0) proton-neutron ($p-n$) correlations in $N=Z$ nuclei is investigated by calculating their correlation energies with a realistic effective interaction which reproduces observed nuclear properties very well, in a strict shell model treatment. It is shown in the realistic shell model that the double-differences of binding energies $(B(A+pn:T) + B(A) - B(A+p) - B(A+n))$ ($B(A)$ being the binding energy) are good indicators of the T=1 and T=0 $p-n$ correlations.
