Clear anomalies in the lattice thermal expansion (deviation from linear variation) and elastic properties (softening of the sound velocity) at the antiferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition are observed in the prototypical multiferroic BiFeO3 using a combination of picosecond acoustic pump-probe and high-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments. Similar anomalies are also evidenced using first-principles calculations supporting our experimental findings. Those calculations in addition to a simple Landau-like model we also developed allow to understand the elastic softening and lattice change at T_N as a result of magnetostriction combined with electrostrictive and magnetoelectric couplings which renormalize the elastic constants of the high-temperature reference phase when the critical T_N temperature is reached.

Controlling light polarization is one of the most essential routines in modern optical technology. Since the demonstration of optical pulse shaping by spatial light modulators and its potential in controlling the quantum reaction pathways, it paved the way for many applications as a coherent control of the photoionization process or as polarization shaping of terahertz (THz) pulses. Here, we evidenced efficient nonresonant and noncollinear $\chi^{(2)}$-type light-matter interaction in femtosecond polarization-sensitive time-resolved optical measurements. Such nonlinear optical interaction of visible light and ultrashort THz pulses leads to THz modulation of visible light polarization in bulk LiNbO$_3$ crystal. Theoretical simulations based on the wave propagation equation capture the physical processes underlying this nonlinear effect. Apart from the observed tunable polarization modulation of visible pulses at ultrahigh frequencies, this physical phenomenon can be envisaged in THz depth-profiling of materials.

Linear and nonlinear magneto-photonic properties of periodic arrays of nickel nanodimers are governed by the interplay of the (local) optical response of individual nanoparticles and (non-local) diffraction phenomena, with a striking example of Wood's anomaly. Angular and magnetic-field dependencies of the second harmonic intensity evidence Wood's anomaly when new diffraction orders emerge. Near-infrared spectroscopic measurements performed at different optical wavelengths and grating constants discriminate between the linear and nonlinear excitation mechanisms of Wood's anomalies. In the nonlinear regime the Wood's anomaly is characterized by an order-of-magnitude larger effect in intensity redistribution between the diffracted beams, as compared to the linear case. The nonlinear Wood's anomaly manifests itself also in the nonlinear magnetic contrast highlighting the prospects of nonlinear magneto-photonics., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The temperature dependence of the thermal boundary resistivity is investigated in glass-embedded Ag particles of radius 4.5 nm, in the temperature range from 300 to 70 K, using all-optical time-resolved nanocalorimetry. The present results provide a benchmark for theories aiming at explaining the thermal boundary resistivity at the interface between metal nanoparticles and their environment, a topic of great relevance when tailoring thermal energy delivery from nanoparticles as for applications in nanomedicine and thermal management at the nanoscale, Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The cooling dynamics of glass-embedded noble metal nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 4 to 26 nm were studied using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. Measurements were performed probing away from the surface plasmon resonance of the nanoparticles to avoid spurious effects due to glass heating around the particle. In these conditions, the time-domain data reflect the cooling kinetics of the nanoparticle. Cooling dynamics are shown to be controlled by both thermal resistance at the nanoparticule?glass interface, and heat diffusion in the glass matrix. Moreover, the interface conductances are deduced from the experiments and found to be correlated to the acoustic impedance mismatch at the metal/glass interface.
