In this work, a non-linear controller designed using non-linear transformation linearization and feedback is proposed for an inverter connected to a weak grid through a single-stage inductive filter. The proposed strategy is self-synchronized, so that it is not necessary to have a voltage sensor at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). The strategy allows to robustify, in the presence of a weak grid, a strategy that has already been demonstrated to allow a significant reduction in the size of the DC-link capacitor of the converter. For this purpose, a state observer is designed that allows estimating the voltage at the PCC from the measurement of the output inductor current. A start-up controller is also included, which allows synchronization even in the case of system start-up. Simulation results are presented for different operating cases, including start-up, normal operation, and grid-voltage sags and swells. In a previous work (Hern\'andez-Bernal et al. 2021) we performed an observational analysis of the Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud (AMEC), which stands out due to its impressive size and shape, quick dynamics, and the fact that it happens during the martian dusty season. Observations show that its morphology can be split in a head, on the western slope of the volcano of around 120 km in diameter; and a tail, that expands to the west reaching more than 1000 km in length, making the AMEC the longest orographic cloud observed so far in the solar system. In this work we run the LMD (Laboratoire de M\'et\'eorologie Dynamique) Mesoscale Model to gain insight into the physics of the AMEC. We note that it is coincident in terms of local time and seasonality with the fastest winds on the summit of Arsia Mons. A downslope windstorm on the western slope is followed by a hydraulic-like jump triggering a strong vertical updraft that propagates upwards in the atmosphere, causing a drop in temperatures of down to 30K at 40-50 km in altitude, spatially and temporarily coincident with the observed head of the AMEC. However the model does not reproduce the microphysics of this cloud: the optical depth is too low and the expansion of the tail does not happen in the model. The observed diurnal cycle is correctly captured by the model for the head of the cloud. This work raises new questions that will guide future observations of the AMEC.

The Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) is a small imaging instrument onboard Mars Express with a field of view of ~40x30 degrees. The camera was initially intended to provide visual confirmation of the separation of the Beagle 2 lander and has similar technical specifications to a typical webcam of the 2000s. In 2007, a few years after the end of its original mission, VMC was turned on again to obtain full-disk images of Mars to be used for outreach purposes. As VMC obtained more images, the scientific potential of the camera became evident, and in 2018 the camera was given an upgraded status of a new scientific instrument, with science goals in the field of Martian atmosphere meteorology. The wide Field of View of the camera combined with the orbit of Mars Express enable the acquisition of full-disk images of the planet showing different local times, which for a long time has been rare among orbital missions around Mars. The small data volume of images also allows videos that show the atmospheric dynamics of dust and cloud systems to be obtained. This paper is intended to be the new reference paper for VMC as a scientific instrument, and thus provides an overview of the updated procedures to plan, command and execute science observations of the Martian atmosphere. These observations produce valuable science data that is calibrated and distributed to the community for scientific use.

In this article, a nonlinear strategy based on a flatness approach is used for controlling the instantaneous complex power supplied from the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) to a weak grid. To this end, the strategy introduced by the authors in [1] considering a strong grid is robustified for avoiding system instability when the converter is connected to an unknown grid. The robustification method consists of including a notch filter that estimates the PCC voltage and using it to build the controller (i.e. the measured PCC voltage used to design the control strategy for a strong grid is replaced by the PCC voltage estimated with the notch filter). In addition, before designing the controller, the steady-state stability and safe operation limits when injecting complex instantaneous power to a grid of unknown impedance are analyzed. This analysis is independent of the control strategy, and applies to all power injection schemes. This paper explores a stochastic Gause predator-prey model with bounded or sub-linear functional response. The model, described by a system of stochastic differential equations, captures the influence of stochastic fluctuations on predator-prey dynamics, with particular focus on the stability, extinction, and persistence of populations. We provide sufficient conditions for the existence and boundedness of solutions, analyze noise-induced extinction events, and investigate the existence of unique stationary distributions for the case of Holing Type I functional response. Our analysis highlights the critical role of noise in determining long-term ecological outcomes, demonstrating that even in cases where deterministic models predict stable coexistence, stochastic noise can drive populations to extinction or alter the system's dynamics significantly.

This paper enhances the classic Smagorinsky model by introducing an innovative, adaptive dissipation term that adjusts dynamically with distance from boundary regions. This modification addresses a known limitation of the standard model over dissipation near boundaries thereby improving accuracy in turbulent flow simulations in confined or wall-adjacent areas. We present a rigorous theoretical framework for this adaptive model, including two foundational theorems. The first theorem guarantees existence and uniqueness of solutions, ensuring that the model is mathematically well-posed within the adaptive context. The second theorem provides a precise bound on the energy dissipation rate, demonstrating that dissipation remains controlled and realistic even as boundary effects vary spatially. By allowing the dissipation coefficient to decrease near boundary layers, this approach preserves the finer turbulent structures without excessive smoothing, yielding a more physically accurate representation of the flow. Future work will focus on implementing this adaptive model in computational simulations to empirically verify the theoretical predictions and assess performance in scenarios with complex boundary geometries., Comment: 9 pages

Compton cameras are radiation detectors that provide spatial information on the origin of the {\gamma}-ray sources based on the Compton scattering effect. Many applications require these detectors to be used at high counting rate. As such, the preprocessing of the detections as well as the imaging algorithms are required to be time-efficient in order for the data to be processed in real time. In this work, optimizations to the preprocessing of events in Compton cameras based on monolithic crystals, with special focus on event identification, were implemented using a parallelizable algorithm. Regarding imaging, an established 3D back projection algorithm was parallelized and implemented using SYCL. The parallel implementation of the algorithm was included without and with several optimizations such as the pre-computing values, discarding low impact contributions based on angle, and selecting an efficient shape of the image universe. The implementations were tested with Intel CPUs, GPUs, and NVIDIA GPUs. When analyzing stellarator configurations, it is common to perform an asymptotic expansion about the magnetic axis. This so-called near-axis expansion is convenient for the same reason asymptotic expansions often are, namely, it reduces the dimension of the problem. This leads to convenient and quickly computed expressions of physical quantities, such as quasisymmetry and stability criteria, which can be used to gain further insight. However, it has been repeatedly found that the expansion diverges at high orders, limiting the physics the expansion can describe. In this paper, we show that the near-axis expansion diverges in vacuum due to ill-posedness and that it can be regularized to improve its convergence. Then, using realistic stellarator coil sets, we show that the near-axis expansion can converge to ninth order in the magnetic field, giving accurate high-order corrections to the computation of flux surfaces. We numerically find that the regularization improves the solutions of the near-axis expansion under perturbation, and we demonstrate that the radius of convergence of the vacuum near-axis expansion is correlated with the distance from the axis to the coils., Comment: 43 pages, 8 figures

TOI-2818 b is a hot Jupiter orbiting a slightly evolved G-type star on a 4.04-day orbit that shows transit timing variations (TTVs) suggestive of a decreasing orbital period. In the most recent year of TESS observations, transits were observed $\sim$8 minutes earlier than expected for a constant period. The implied orbital decay rate is $1.35 \pm 0.25$ s yr$^{-1}$, too fast to be explained by tidal dissipation even considering the evolved nature of the host star. Radial velocity monitoring rules out the possibility that the apparent change in period is due to a steady acceleration of the star by a long-period companion. Apsidal precession due to the tidal distortion of the planet is also physically implausible. The most plausible explanation for the TTVs appears to be gravitational perturbations from a hitherto undetected planet with mass $\lesssim$$10\,M_\oplus$ that is in (or near) a mean-motion resonance with the hot Jupiter. We develop two novel couplings between general pure-jump L\'evy processes in $\R^d$ and apply them to obtain upper bounds on the rate of convergence in an appropriate Wasserstein distance on the path space for a wide class of L\'evy processes attracted to a multidimensional stable process in the small-time regime. We also establish general lower bounds based on certain universal properties of slowly varying functions and the relationship between the Wasserstein and Toscani--Fourier distances of the marginals. Our upper and lower bounds typically have matching rates. We present ALMA observations on the high-redshift galaxy GHZ2 and report a successful detection of the rest-frame 88um atomic transition from doubly-ionized Oxygen at z=12.3327+/-0.0005. Based on these observations, combined with additional constraints on the [OIII] 52um line luminosity and previous JWST data, we argue that GHZ2 is likely powered by compact and young star formation, and show that it follows well-established relationships found for giant HII regions and metal-poor star-forming dwarf galaxies that are known to host bright super star clusters. Additionally, these observations provide new constraints on the Oxygen electron density (100 < n_e[cm^-3] < 4,000) and dynamical mass (M_dyn=3-8x10^8M_sun). The existence of these massive starburst systems 13.3Gyr ago might explain the origin of today's globular clusters, a long-standing question in astronomy. Driven by recent laboratory experiments and astronomical observations, significant advances have deepened our understanding of neutron-star physics. NICER's Pulse Profile Modeling has refined our knowledge of neutron star masses and radii, while gravitational-wave detections have revealed key insights into the structure of neutron stars. Particularly relevant is the extraction of the tidal deformability by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration and the most recent determination of stellar radii by NICER, both suggesting a relatively soft equation of state (EOS) at intermediate densities. Additionally, measurements from the PREX collaboration and from pulsar timing suggest instead that the EOS is stiff in the vicinity of saturation density and at the highest densities accessible to date. But how stiff can the EOS be at these very high densities? Recent events featuring compact objects near the "lower mass gap" have raised questions about the existence of very massive neutron stars. Motivated by this finding and in light of new refinements to theoretical models, we explore the possibility that these massive objects may indeed be rapidly rotating neutron stars. We explore how rotation affects both the maximum neutron star mass and their associated radii, and discuss the implications they may have on the equation of state., Comment: 8 pages and 3 figures. This document is comprised of a collection of updated preliminary parameters for the key parts of the muon collider. The updated preliminary parameters follow on from the October 2023 Tentative Parameters Report. Particular attention has been given to regions of the facility that are believed to hold greater technical uncertainty in their design and that have a strong impact on the cost and power consumption of the facility. The data is collected from a collaborative spreadsheet and transferred to overleaf.

In this paper, we study the analytic classification of a class of nilpotent singularities of holomorphic foliations in $(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$, those exhibiting a Poincar\'e-Dulac type singularity in their reduction process. This analytic classification is based in the holonomy of a certain component of the exceptional divisor. This work uses twin 22-year free-running simulations of the Gulf of Mexico hydrodynamics performed with the HYCOM, one considering only ocean dynamics and the other incorporating atmospheric forcing, to study the behavior of the Yucatan Channel transport (YCT), the Loop Current (LC), the Loop Current Eddies (LCEs), their relationships, and the atmospheric forcing effect on them in short (daily) and long (monthly) time scales. A more comprehensive description of the LC intrusion and LCE separations was obtained by considering the upper eastern or western YCT (whose magnitudes are determined by the longitudinal displacements of the Yucatan Current's core), a perspective not evident when considering the upper total YCT; specifically, the eastern YCT provides the most meaningful description of the studied processes. Atmospheric forcing mainly affects the extended stage of the LC by creating a higher dispersion in the YCT and LC circulation values in comparison when considering only ocean dynamics. For the long-term analysis, standardized indexes that integrate the daily values of the eastern YCT and LC circulation in time were used; their temporal propagation and persistence (the changes of their characteristics from short to long time scales) were studied. Intrinsic ocean dynamics produces a persistent YCT and LC intrusion behavior and consistent LCE separation patterns from daily to 5-month scales. The atmospheric forcing effects are more emphasized on the LC intrusion and LCE separations than on the YCT: the YCT persistence is maintained but not that of the LC intrusion. An increased occurrence of LCE separations with low or moderate LC intrusion is expected due to climate change. Using the standardized indexes of the LC metrics to construct a predictive model of the LC intrusion and LCE separations using only current and past LC information is proposed for future research., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

The Basque Country's Habitability Decree of 2022 redefines natural lighting requirements in residential spaces, increasing the Wall-to-Floor Ratio (WFR) compared to previous municipal and sectoral standards, based on the depth of the space considered. This regulatory adjustment seeks to optimize the quality of natural light, a key factor for well-being. However, the application of a geometric rule based on fixed proportions raises questions about the variability of achievable lighting results and their suitability for residential comfort needs. This study analyses the implementation of the regulation in two bedroom models, BR1 and BR2, selected as the typical and the deepest, but with less than 4 meters and meeting the rest of the dimensional requirements, respectively. Through simulations of the Daylight Factor (DF) using window proportions of 1:1, 3:2, 2:1, and 1:2 under a CIE overcast sky model, the dispersion in the obtained natural lighting has been examined. Such analysis allows for the quantification of lighting result variability within the regulatory parameters, exploring the complexity of meeting lighting requirements through an approach based exclusively on geometric proportions. Additionally, the impact of architectural and urban variables such as building height, the presence of courtyards, street width, and balcony depth has been considered. These factors, often overlooked in regulations and indirectly considered in D80/2022, play an important role in modulating natural light and lighting quality. Model-Free Control (MFC) has been applied to a wide variety of systems in which it has shown its performance. MFC offers "model-free operation", but the controller design requires some information from the nominal plant. This paper introduces a new design method for model-free controllers that uses minimal data about the system and retrieves a set of stable controller configurations. This method is specifically developed for first-order model-free controllers, but can be extended to second-order controllers, and it relies in a frequency analysis of the controller and the plant. The main feature of the design method is decoupling the design of the main control parameter alpha from the rest, providing specific values for it. We consider Josephson junctions formed by coupling two conventional superconductors via an unconventional magnet and investigate the formation of Andreev bound states, their impact on the Josephson effect, and the emergent superconducting correlations. We focus on unconventional magnets known as $d$-wave altermagnets and $p$-wave magnets. We find that the Andreev bound states in $d$-wave altermagnet and $p_y$-wave magnet Josephson junctions strongly depend on the transverse momentum, with a spin splitting and low-energy minima as a function of the superconducting phase difference $\varphi$. In contrast, the Andreev bound states for $p_{x}$-wave magnets are insensitive to the transverse momentum. We show that the Andreev bound states can be probed by the local density of states in the middle of the junction, which also reveals that $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$- and $p$-wave magnet junctions are prone to host zero energy peaks. While the zero-energy peak in $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave altermagnet junctions tends to oscillate with the magnetic order, it remains robust in $p$-wave magnet junctions. We also demonstrate that the critical currents in $d$-wave altermagnet Josephson junctions exhibit an oscillatory decay with the increase of the magnetic order, while the oscillations are absent in $p$-wave magnet junctions albeit the currents exhibit a slow decay. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that the interplay of the Josephson effect and unconventional magnetic order of $d$-wave altermagnets and $p$-wave magnets originates from odd-frequency spin-triplet $s$-wave superconducting correlations that are otherwise absent. This paper introduces a modified Byrd-Omojokun (BO) trust region algorithm to address the challenges posed by noisy function and gradient evaluations. The original BO method was designed to solve equality constrained problems and it forms the backbone of some interior point methods for general large-scale constrained optimization. A key strength of the BO method is its robustness in handling problems with rank-deficient constraint Jacobians. The algorithm proposed in this paper introduces a new criterion for accepting a step and for updating the trust region that makes use of an estimate in the noise in the problem. The analysis presented here gives conditions under which the iterates converge to regions of stationary points of the problem, determined by the level of noise. This analysis is more complex than for line search methods because the trust region carries (noisy) information from previous iterates. Numerical tests illustrate the practical performance of the algorithm.

We analyze the dynamics of a gravitational bounded cloud of generic bosons or a boson star in the non-relativistic regime, assuming from the very beginning that the boson star is in a Bose-Einstein condensed state. Also, we have taken into account multi-particle interactions within the boson star, which are described through the so-called logarithmic potential. Assuming energy conservation conditions at any time, we are able to describe the boson star as a some kind of gravitational quantum liquid, or more specifically, as a macroscopic gravitational quantum droplet. The assumption of logarithmic interactions, lead us to establish several scenarios in which the system is able to oscillates around the equilibrium radius. The approach analyzed in the present report shows that the interpretation of a boson star as a macroscopic gravitational quantum droplet can be applied to the dynamics analysis of a large number of systems on different size scales., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

For a many-to-one market with substitutable preferences on the firm's side, based on the Aizerman-Malishevski decomposition, we define an associated one-to-one market. Given that the usual notion of stability for a one-to-one market does not fit well for this associated one-to-one market, we introduce a new notion of stability. This notion allows us to establish an isomorphism between the set of stable matchings in the many-to-one market and the matchings in the associated one-to-one market that meet this new stability criterion. Furthermore, we present an adaptation of the well-known deferred acceptance algorithm to compute a matching that satisfies this new notion of stability for the associated one-to-one market.

Enhanced diffusion, which describes the accelerated spread of passive scalars due to the interaction between advection and molecular diffusion, has been extensively studied in simplified geometries, such as uniform shear and radial flows. However, many real-world applications occur in complex, anisotropic domains where standard assumptions do not hold. This paper extends the theory of enhanced diffusion to anisotropic and non-uniform geometries, where scaling in the \(x\)- and \(y\)-directions follows distinct, power-law relationships, and the velocity field exhibits spatially varying regularity. We define a generalized framework for anisotropic diffusion enhancement and rigorously derive new scaling laws for diffusion rates in these settings. Specifically, we show that in a domain with anisotropic scaling functions \( f(x) \sim |x|^p \) and \( g(y) \sim |y|^q \), the enhanced diffusion rate \( r(\kappa) \) for a passive scalar satisfies \( r(\kappa) = C \kappa^{\frac{pq}{p+q+2}} \), where \( C \) depends on the regularity and scaling properties of the domain but remains independent of the diffusivity \( \kappa \). This theoretical result is validated through detailed proofs leveraging stochastic process techniques and variance estimation. Our findings offer a new perspective on the role of domain geometry and anisotropy in diffusion processes, with potential applications in environmental science, engineering, and beyond. This study presents an innovative dynamic weighting knowledge distillation (KD) framework tailored for efficient Earth observation (EO) image classification (IC) in resource-constrained settings. Utilizing EfficientViT and MobileViT as teacher models, this framework enables lightweight student models, particularly ResNet8 and ResNet16, to surpass 90% in accuracy, precision, and recall, adhering to the stringent confidence thresholds necessary for reliable classification tasks. Unlike conventional KD methods that rely on static weight distribution, our adaptive weighting mechanism responds to each teacher model's confidence, allowing student models to prioritize more credible sources of knowledge dynamically. Remarkably, ResNet8 delivers substantial efficiency gains, achieving a 97.5% reduction in parameters, a 96.7% decrease in FLOPs, an 86.2% cut in power consumption, and a 63.5% increase in inference speed over MobileViT. This significant optimization of complexity and resource demands establishes ResNet8 as an optimal candidate for EO tasks, combining robust performance with feasibility in deployment. The confidence-based, adaptable KD approach underscores the potential of dynamic distillation strategies to yield high-performing, resource-efficient models tailored for satellite-based EO applications. The reported discovery of a cold ($\sim$10$^4~\text{K}$) disc-like structure around the super-massive black hole at the centre of the Milk Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), has challenged our understanding of the gas dynamics and thermodynamic state of the plasma in its immediate vicinity. State-of-the-art simulations do not agree on whether or not such a disc can indeed be a product of the multiple stellar wind interactions of the mass-losing stars in the region. This study aims to constrain the conditions for the formation of a cold disc as a natural outcome of the system of the mass-losing stars orbiting around Sgr A*, to investigate if the disc is a transient or long-lasting structure, and to assess the validity of the model through direct comparisons with observations. We conduct a set of hydrodynamic simulations of the observed Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars feeding Sgr A* using the finite-volume adaptive mesh-refinement code Ramses. We focus, for the first time, on the impact of the chemical composition of the plasma emanating from the WR stars. The simulations show that the chemical composition of the plasma affects the radiative cooling enough to impact the properties of the medium such as density and temperature and, as a consequence, the rate at which the material inflows onto Sgr A*. We demonstrated that the formation of a cold disc from the stellar winds is possible for certain chemical compositions that are consistent with the current observational constraints. However, even in such a case, it is not possible to reproduce the reported properties of the observed disc-like structure, namely its inclination and hydrogen recombination line fluxes. We conclude that the stellar winds on their own cannot form the cold disc around Sgr A* inferred from the observations. We investigate the coevolution of metals and dust for 173 galaxies at 4.010 by JWST. Besides, we observe that the metallicity of galaxies at z>8 presents a metal-to-stellar mass ratio larger than a few 10^-3, above a floor. Solving parametric partial differential equations (PDEs) presents significant challenges for data-driven methods due to the sensitivity of spatio-temporal dynamics to variations in PDE parameters. Machine learning approaches often struggle to capture this variability. To address this, data-driven approaches learn parametric PDEs by sampling a very large variety of trajectories with varying PDE parameters. We first show that incorporating conditioning mechanisms for learning parametric PDEs is essential and that among them, $\textit{adaptive conditioning}$, allows stronger generalization. As existing adaptive conditioning methods do not scale well with respect to the number of parameters to adapt in the neural solver, we propose GEPS, a simple adaptation mechanism to boost GEneralization in Pde Solvers via a first-order optimization and low-rank rapid adaptation of a small set of context parameters. We demonstrate the versatility of our approach for both fully data-driven and for physics-aware neural solvers. Validation performed on a whole range of spatio-temporal forecasting problems demonstrates excellent performance for generalizing to unseen conditions including initial conditions, PDE coefficients, forcing terms and solution domain. $\textit{Project page}$: https://geps-project.github.io

Tidal Love numbers of anti-de Sitter black holes are understood as linear response coefficients governing how the holographically dual plasma polarizes when the geometry of the space, in which the plasma lives, is deformed. So far, this picture has been applied only to black branes with plane wave perturbations. We fill the gap in the literature by performing the computation of tidal Love numbers for the four-dimensional Schwarzschild solution in global anti-de Sitter, which is dual to a conformal plasma on $S^2$. We conclude about the effect of the bulk gravitational perturbations on the boundary metric and stress tensor, responsible for the geometric polarization. The computation of the tidal Love numbers is performed in both Regge-Wheeler gauge and the Kodama-Ishibashi gauge-invariant approach. We spell out how to convert the tidal Love numbers determined in these two formalisms and find perfect agreement. The accurate simulation of complex biochemical phenomena has historically been hampered by the computational requirements of high-fidelity molecular-modeling techniques. Quantum mechanical methods, such as ab initio wave-function (WF) theory, deliver the desired accuracy, but have impractical scaling for modelling biosystems with thousands of atoms. Combining molecular fragmentation with MP2 perturbation theory, this study presents an innovative approach that enables biomolecular-scale ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations at WF theory level. Leveraging the resolution-of-the-identity approximation for Hartree-Fock and MP2 gradients, our approach eliminates computationally intensive four-center integrals and their gradients, while achieving near-peak performance on modern GPU architectures. The introduction of asynchronous time steps minimizes time step latency, overlapping computational phases and effectively mitigating load imbalances. Utilizing up to 9,400 nodes of Frontier and achieving 59% (1006.7 PFLOP/s) of its double-precision floating-point peak, our method enables us to break the million-electron and 1 EFLOP/s barriers for AIMD simulations with quantum accuracy.

This work presents a comprehensive framework for enhanced diffusion modeling in fluid-structure interactions by combining the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) with stochastic trajectories and high-order spectral boundary conditions. Using semi-Lagrangian schemes, this approach captures complex diffusion dynamics at moving interfaces, integrating probabilistic methods that reflect multi-scale fluctuations. In addition to a rigorous mathematical foundation that includes stability proofs, this model exhibits reduced numerical diffusion errors and improved stability in long-term simulations. Comparative studies highlight its effectiveness in multi-scale scenarios that require precision in interface dynamics. Focusing on various shear and circular flows, including those with H\"older and Lipschitz regularities and critical points, we establish sharp bounds on effective diffusion rates using specific initial data examples. This dual exploration in enhanced diffusion highlights how flow regularity and critical points influence dissipation. These findings advance both the theoretical understanding and practical applications of enhanced diffusion in fluid dynamics, offering new insights into diffusion rate optimization through interface dynamics and flow structure regularities. Future research can further refine the IBM framework by exploring alternative probabilistic methods to improve interface accuracy, opening up the potential for improved modeling in applications that require precise control over mixing rates and dissipation processes., Comment: 16 pages

The promise of large-scale, high-resolution datasets from Electron Microscopy (EM) and X-ray Microtomography (XRM) lies in their ability to reveal neural structures and synaptic connectivity, which is critical for understanding the brain. Effectively managing these complex and rapidly increasing datasets will enable new scientific insights, facilitate querying, and support secondary use across the neuroscience community. However, without effective neurodata standards that permit use of these data across multiple systems and workflows, these valuable and costly datasets risk being underutilized especially as they surpass petascale levels. These standards will promote data sharing through accessible interfaces, allow researchers to build on each other's work, and guide the development of tools and capabilities that are interoperable. Herein we outline a standards framework for creating and managing annotations originating and derived from high-resolution volumetric imaging and connectomic datasets, focusing on ensuring Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) practices. The goal is to enhance collaborative efforts, boost the reliability of findings, and enable comparative analysis across growing datasets of different species and modalities. We have formed a global working group with academic and industry partners in the high-resolution volumetric data generation and analysis community, focused on identifying gaps in current EM and XRM data pipelines, and refining outlines and platforms for standardizing EM and XRM methods. After over three decades of unsuccessful attempts, we report the first detection of molecular gas emission in Malin 1, the largest spiral galaxy observed to date, and one of the most iconic giant low surface brightness galaxies. Using ALMA, we detect significant $^{12}$CO(J=1-0) emission in the galaxy's central region and tentatively identify CO emission across three regions on the disc. These observations allow for a better estimate of the H$_2$ mass and molecular gas mass surface density, both of which are remarkably low given the galaxy's scale. By integrating data on its HI mass, we derive a very low molecular-to-atomic gas mass ratio. Overall, our results highlight the minimal presence of molecular gas in Malin 1, contrasting sharply with its extensive, homogeneous atomic gas reservoir. For the first time, we position Malin 1 on the Kennicutt-Schmidt (K-S) diagram, where it falls below the main sequence for normal spirals, consistent with previous upper limits but now with more accurate figures. These findings are crucial for constraining our understanding of star formation processes in environments characterized by extremely low molecular gas densities and for refining models of galaxy formation, thereby improving predictions concerning the formation, evolution, and distribution of these giant, elusive galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. This paper introduces a general framework for generate-and-test-based solvers for epistemic logic programs that can be instantiated with different generator and tester programs, and we prove sufficient conditions on those programs for the correctness of the solvers built using this framework. It also introduces a new generator program that incorporates the propagation of epistemic consequences and shows that this can exponentially reduce the number of candidates that need to be tested while only incurring a linear overhead. We implement a new solver based on these theoretical findings and experimentally show that it outperforms existing solvers by achieving a ~3.3x speed-up and solving 91% more instances on well-known benchmarks.

The remarkable capabilities of the Segment Anything Model (SAM) for tackling image segmentation tasks in an intuitive and interactive manner has sparked interest in the design of effective visual prompts. Such interest has led to the creation of automated point prompt selection strategies, typically motivated from a feature extraction perspective. However, there is still very little understanding of how appropriate these automated visual prompting strategies are, particularly when compared to humans, across diverse image domains. Additionally, the performance benefits of including such automated visual prompting strategies within the finetuning process of SAM also remains unexplored, as does the effect of interpretable factors like distance between the prompt points on segmentation performance. To bridge these gaps, we leverage a recently released visual prompting dataset, PointPrompt, and introduce a number of benchmarking tasks that provide an array of opportunities to improve the understanding of the way human prompts differ from automated ones and what underlying factors make for effective visual prompts. We demonstrate that the resulting segmentation scores obtained by humans are approximately 29% higher than those given by automated strategies and identify potential features that are indicative of prompting performance with $R^2$ scores over 0.5. Additionally, we demonstrate that performance when using automated methods can be improved by up to 68% via a finetuning approach. Overall, our experiments not only showcase the existing gap between human prompts and automated methods, but also highlight potential avenues through which this gap can be leveraged to improve effective visual prompt design. The development of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has led to the widespread adoption of monitoring networks for a wide variety of applications, such as smart cities, environmental monitoring, and precision agriculture. A major research focus in recent years has been the development of graph-based techniques to improve the quality of data from sensor networks, a key aspect for the use of sensed data in decision-making processes, digital twins, and other applications. Emphasis has been placed on the development of machine learning and signal processing techniques over graphs, taking advantage of the benefits provided by the use of structured data through a graph topology. Many technologies such as the graph signal processing (GSP) or the successful graph neural networks (GNNs) have been used for data quality enhancement tasks. In this survey, we focus on graph-based models for data quality control in monitoring sensor networks. Furthermore, we delve into the technical details that are commonly leveraged for providing powerful graph-based solutions for data quality tasks in sensor networks, including missing value imputation, outlier detection, or virtual sensing. This doctoral thesis focuses on the application of lattice techniques to study two separate topics: hadron interactions within quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and the emission of particles and gravitational waves (GWs) from cosmic string loops. The first part of the dissertation deals with the study of two- an three-particle interactions using lattice QCD simulations, complemented by the limit of large number of colors and chiral perturbation theory. In particular, this part presents results on the study of meson interactions as a function of the number of colors, three-pion interactions in chiral perturbation theory, and two- and three-particle scattering in the (1+1)-dimensional O(3) non-linear sigma model. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the study of the dynamics and decay into particles and GWs of cosmic string loops, using classical-field-theory lattice computations. This article proposes a hybrid adaptive numerical method based on the Dual Reciprocity Method (DRM) to solve problems with non-linear boundary conditions and large-scale problems, named Hybrid Adaptive Dual Reciprocity Method (H-DRM). The method uses a combination of DRM to handle non-homogeneous terms, iterative techniques to deal with non-linear boundary conditions, and an adaptive multiscale approach for large-scale problems. Additionally, the H-DRM incorporates local finite elements in critical regions of the domain. This method aims to improve computational efficiency and accuracy for problems involving complex geometry and non-linearities at the boundary, offering a robust solution for physical and engineering problems. As nations and organisations worldwide intensify their efforts and investments to commercialise quantum technologies and explore practical applications across various industries, there is a burgeoning demand for skilled professionals to support this rapidly growing ecosystem. With an expanding array of stakeholders from diverse professions beginning to engage with this ecosystem, there is an urgent need for innovative educational methodologies. These methodologies must not only convey the intricate principles of quantum mechanics effectively to varied professionals, enabling them to make informed decisions but also spark interest among students to delve into and pursue careers within this cutting-edge field. In response, we introduce the Experience-Name-Speak-Apply-Repeat (ENSAR) methodology, coupled with its hands-on implementation through the Qureka Box - an innovative tool designed to demystify quantum computing for a diverse audience by emphasising a pedagogical approach rooted in experiential learning, conceptual understanding, and practical application. We present the results of deploying the ENSAR methodology using the Qureka Box across a diverse group to validate our claims. The findings suggest a significant enhancement in the participants' grasp of foundational quantum computing concepts, thereby showcasing the potential of this approach to equip individuals from diverse professional backgrounds with the knowledge and skills to bridge the workforce demand.

Advances in sensing devices that utilize NV center ensembles in diamond are driving progress in microscale nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Utilizing quantum sensing techniques in the high-field regime significantly boosts sensitivity by increasing thermal polarization, and improve spectral quality via enhanced energy shifts. Compatible with the latter, a straightforward manner to further raise sensor sensitivity is to increase NV concentration; although, this intensifies detrimental dipole-dipole interactions among NVs. In this work, we present a method for detecting NMR signals in high-field scenarios while effectively suppressing dipole-dipole couplings in the NV ensemble. X-ray polarization is a unique new probe of the particle acceleration in astrophysical jets made possible through the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. Here we report on the first dense X-ray polarization monitoring campaign on the blazar Mrk 421. Our observations were accompanied by an even denser radio and optical polarization campaign. We find significant short-timescale variability in both X-ray polarization degree and angle, including a $\sim90^\circ$ angle rotation about the jet axis. We attribute this to random variations of the magnetic field, consistent with the presence of turbulence but also unlikely to be explained by turbulence alone. At the same time, the degree of lower-energy polarization is significantly lower and shows no more than mild variability. Our campaign provides further evidence for a scenario in which energy-stratified shock-acceleration of relativistic electrons, combined with a turbulent magnetic field, is responsible for optical to X-ray synchrotron emission in blazar jets., Comment: 23 pages, including 8 pages of appendices. 12 figures, 3 tables. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the formation and dissipation of vortices within chaotic fluid flows, leveraging the framework of Sobolev and Besov spaces on Riemannian manifolds. Building upon the Navier-Stokes equations, we introduce a hypercomplex bifurcation approach to characterize the regularity and critical thresholds at which vortices emerge and dissipate in chaotic settings. We explore the role of differential geometry and bifurcation theory in vortex dynamics, providing a rigorous mathematical foundation for understanding these phenomena. Our approach addresses spectral decomposition, asymptotic stability, and dissipation thresholds, offering critical insights into the mechanisms of vortex formation and dissipation. Additionally, we introduce two new theorems that further elucidate the role of geometric stability and bifurcations in vortex dynamics. The first theorem demonstrates the geometric stability of vortices on manifolds with positive Ricci curvature, while the second theorem analyzes the bifurcation points that lead to the formation or dissipation of vortex structures. This research contributes to the existing literature by providing a more complete mathematical picture of the underlying mechanisms of vortex dynamics in turbulent fluid flows., Comment: 15 pages

Although planets have been found orbiting binary systems, whether they can survive binary interactions is debated. While the tightest-orbit binaries should host the most dynamically stable and long-lived circumbinary planetary systems, they are also the systems that are expected to experience mass transfer, common envelope evolution, or stellar mergers. In this study, we explore the effect of stable non-conservative mass transfer on the dynamical evolution of circumbinary planets. We present a new script that seamlessly integrates binary evolution data from the 1D binary stellar evolution code MESA into the N-body simulation code REBOUND. This integration framework enables a comprehensive examination of the dynamical evolution of circumbinary planets orbiting mass-transferring binaries, while simultaneously accounting for the detailed stellar structure evolution. In addition, we introduce a recalibration method to mitigate numerical errors from updates of binary properties during the system's dynamical evolution. We construct a reference binary model in which a $2.21\, M_\odot$ star loses its hydrogen-rich envelope through non-conservative mass transfer to the $1.76\, M_\odot$ companion star, creating a $0.38\,M_\odot$ subdwarf. We find the tightest stable orbital separation for circumbinary planets to be $\simeq 2.5$ times the binary separation after mass transfer. Accounting for tides by using the interior stellar structure, we find that tidal effects become apparent after the rapid mass transfer phase and start to fade away during the latter stage of the slow mass transfer phase. We present JWST/NIRSpec PRISM spectroscopic characterization of GHZ9 at z= 10.145 $\pm$ 0.010, currently the most distant source detected by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum reveals several UV high-ionization lines, including CII, SiIV, [NIV], CIV, HeII, OIII], NIII], and CIII]. The prominent rest-frame equivalent widths (EW(CIV)$\simeq$65A, EW(HeII)$\simeq$18A, EW(CIII])$\simeq$48A) show the presence of a hard radiation field, while the analysis of line ratio diagnostics suggest this galaxy hosts both AGN and star-formation activity. GHZ9 is nitrogen-enriched (6--9.5 times solar), carbon-poor (0.2--0.65 times solar), metal-poor (Z = 0.01--0.1 Z$_{\odot}$), and compact ($<$ 106 pc), similarly to GNz11, GHZ2, and recently discovered N-enhanced high redshift objects. We exploited the newly available JWST/NIRSpec and NIRCam dataset to perform an independent analysis of the Chandra data confirming that GHZ9 is the most likely JWST source associated to X-ray emission at 0.5-7 keV. Assuming a spectral index $\Gamma$ = 2.3 (1.8), we estimate a black hole (BH) mass of 1.60 $\pm$ 0.31 (0.48 $\pm$ 0.09) $\times$ 10$^8$M$_{\odot}$, which is consistent either with Eddington-accretion onto heavy ($\geq$ 10$^6$ M$_{\odot}$) BH seeds formed at z=18, or super-Eddington accretion onto a light seed of $\sim$ 10$^2-10^4$ M$_{\odot}$ at z = 25. The corresponding BH-to-stellar mass ratio M$_{BH}$/M$_{star}$= 0.33$\pm$0.22 (0.10$\pm$0.07), with a stringent limit $>$0.02, implies an accelerated growth of the BH mass with respect to the stellar mass. QTRAJ is a computer code that simulates the propagation of quarkonium in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) based on the quantum-trajectory algorithm. This algorithm solves a master equation in which the quarkonium is treated as an open quantum system (OQS). A major advantage of this approach is that it turns a 3D spatial evolution for a density matrix into a 1D Schr\"odinger equation for a wavefunction with a non-hermitian Hamiltonian, drastically reducing the computational cost. So far, the interaction implemented in the master equation was obtained within the framework of potential non-relativistic QCD (pNRQCD), and restricted to the regime $rT \ll 1$, where $r$ is the size of the color dipole and $T$ is the temperature. In the environment produced in heavy-ion collisions (HIC's) this limit is accurate for $\Upsilon(1S)$, but the applicability to other quarkonium states is dubious. In the present study we generalize the above approach, extending it to the regime $rT\!\sim\! 1$ in the one-gluon exchange approximation, with proper Hard Thermal Loop (HTL) resummation of medium effects. This is done by implementing new jump operators connecting different color states of the $Q\bar Q$ pair and expanding them in plane waves, giving rise to a variation of the algorithm present in QTRAJ 1.0. Chlorine (Cl) is a chemical element of the group of the halogens and is between the 17th and the 20th most abundant elements in the Solar System. It is thought to be produced from the capture of a proton or neutron by specific alpha-element isotopes during both hydrostatic and explosive oxygen burning, though some contribution may come from Type Ia supernovae. Cl lines are quite rare in stellar spectra, so most of the information available about its abundance comes from analyzing the emission lines of ionized nebulae, especially the collisionally excited lines of Cl2+ ([Cl III] {\lambda}{\lambda}5518,5538). Our goal is to accurately determine the Cl abundance in H II regions, and gather more information about its nucleosynthetic origin. For this work we used a sample of observations that encompasses the deepest spectra of H II regions available in the literature, from both the Milky Way and other galaxies in the local Universe, covering a range of oxygen (O) abundances, 12+log(O/H), from 7.18 to 8.70. As a first step, we determine the most representative electron temperature of the zone of the nebulae where the Cl2+ ion lies. To this aim we used a grid of photoionization models and diagnostics valid for other ions, as that parameter cannot be determined directly through [Cl III] lines. We study the problem of stock replenishment and transshipment in the retail industry. We develop a model that can accommodate different policies, including centralized redistribution (replenishment) and decentralized redistribution (lateral transshipments), allowing for direct comparisons between them. We present a numeric analysis in which the benchmark instances stem from the collaboration with a high-end clothing retail company. The underlying model, as usually in the field, is a large-scale mixed-integer linear programming problem. We develop a specific algorithmic procedure to solve this MILP problem and compare its performance with the direct solution via state-of-the-art solvers.

In commuting parametric quantum circuits, the Fourier series of the pairwise fidelity can be expressed as the characteristic function of random variables. Furthermore, expressiveness can be cast as the recurrence probability of a random walk on a lattice. This construction has been successfully applied to the group composed only of Pauli-Z rotations, and we generalize this probabilistic strategy to any commuting set of Pauli operators. We utilize an efficient algorithm by van den Berg and Temme (2020) using the tableau representation of Pauli strings to yield a unitary from the Clifford group that, under conjugation, simultaneously diagonalizes our commuting set of Pauli rotations. Furthermore, we fully characterize the underlying distribution of the random walk using stabilizer states and their basis state representations. This would allow us to tractably compute the lattice volume and variance matrix used to express the frame potential. Together, this demonstrates a scalable strategy to calculate the expressiveness of parametric quantum models.

We report here the results obtained from a systematic optical photometric survey aimed at finding new compact binary millisecond pulsars (also known as "spiders"): the COmpact BInary PULsar SEarch (COBIPULSE). We acquired multi-band optical images over one year around $33$ unidentified Fermi-LAT sources, selected as pulsar candidates based on their curved GeV spectra and steady $\gamma$-ray emission. We present the discovery of four optical variables coinciding with the Fermi sources 3FGL J0737.2$-$3233, 3FGL J2117.6$+$3725 (two systems in this field) and 3FGL J2221.6$+$6507, which we propose as new candidate spider systems. Indeed, they all show optical flux modulation consistent with orbital periods of $0.3548(5) \ \mathrm{d}$, $0.25328(6) \ \mathrm{d}$, $0.441961(2) \ \mathrm{d}$, and $0.165(4) \ \mathrm{d}$, respectively, with amplitudes $\gtrsim 0.3 \ \mathrm{mag}$ and colors compatible with companion star temperatures of $5000$--$6000 \ \mathrm{K}$. These properties are consistent with the "redback" sub-class of spider pulsars. If confirmed as a millisecond pulsar, 3FGL J0737.2$-$3233 will be the closest known spider to Earth ($D=659_{-20}^{+16} \ \mathrm{pc}$, from Gaia-DR3 parallax). We searched and did not find any X-ray sources matching our four candidates, placing $3\sigma$ upper limits of $\sim10^{31}$--$10^{32} \ \mathrm{erg} \ \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ ($0.3$--$10 \ \mathrm{keV}$) on their soft X-ray luminosities. In altermagnets, time-reversal symmetry breaking spin-polarizes electronic states, while total magnetization remains zero. In addition, at altermagnetic surfaces Rashba-spin orbit coupling is activated due to broken inversion symmetry, introducing a competing spin-momentum locking interaction. Here we show that their interplay leads to the formation of complex, chiral spin textures that offer novel, non-linear spin-to-charge conversion properties. Whereas altermagnetic order suppresses the canonical linear in-plane Rashba-Edelstein response, we establish the presence of an anomalous transversal Edelstein effect for planar applied electric and magnetic field, or alternatively, an in-plane magnetization. Moreover the non-linear Edelstein response resulting purely from electric fields also triggers the anomalous out-of-plane magnetization. We determine the anomalous response with a model based on the ab-initio electronic structure of RuO$_2$ bilayers, ultimately opening experimental avenues to explore spin-charge conversion phenomena at altermagnetic interfaces., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

Quantum optical networks are instrumental to address fundamental questions and enable applications ranging from communication to computation and, more recently, machine learning. In particular, photonic artificial neural networks offer the opportunity to exploit the advantages of both classical and quantum optics. Photonic neuro-inspired computation and machine learning have been successfully demonstrated in classical settings, while quantum optical networks have triggered breakthrough applications such as teleportation, quantum key distribution and quantum computing. We present a perspective on the state of the art in quantum optical machine learning and the potential advantages of artificial neural networks in circuit designs and beyond, in more general analogue settings characterised by recurrent and coherent complex interactions. We consider two analogue neuro-inspired applications, namely quantum reservoir computing and quantum associative memories, and discuss the enhanced capabilities offered by quantum substrates, highlighting the specific role of light squeezing in this context.

Matrix factorization models are the core of current commercial collaborative filtering Recommender Systems. This paper tested six representative matrix factorization models, using four collaborative filtering datasets. Experiments have tested a variety of accuracy and beyond accuracy quality measures, including prediction, recommendation of ordered and unordered lists, novelty, and diversity. Results show each convenient matrix factorization model attending to their simplicity, the required prediction quality, the necessary recommendation quality, the desired recommendation novelty and diversity, the need to explain recommendations, the adequacy of assigning semantic interpretations to hidden factors, the advisability of recommending to groups of users, and the need to obtain reliability values.
