We present theoretical analyses of the recently proposed Onsager-Regularized (OReg) lattice Boltzmann (LB) method [Jonnalagadda et al., Phys. Rev. E 104, 015313 (2021)] to demonstrate its ability to mitigate spurious errors associated with the insufficient isotropy of standard first-neighbor lattices without the inclusion of any external correction terms. As an illustration, we theoretically show that, with the so-called guided equilibrium, the OReg scheme inherently compensates for the insufficient lattice isotropy of the standard D2Q9 lattice by automatically adjusting the lattice viscosity; these theoretical results are verified numerically through simulations of the rotated decaying shear wave and isothermal shocktube problems. The present work lays the theoretical foundation of a generic framework which, with appropriately constrained equilibrium representations, can enable fully local, correction-free nonlinear thermohydrodynamic LB simulations on standard lattices, thereby facilitating scalable simulations of physically challenging fluid flows.

Low-rank methods have shown success in accelerating simulations of a collisionless plasma described by the Vlasov equation, but still rely on computationally costly linear algebra every time step. We propose a data-driven factorization method using artificial neural networks, specifically with convolutional layer architecture, that trains on existing simulation data. At inference time, the model outputs a low-rank decomposition of the distribution field of the charged particles, and we demonstrate that this step is faster than the standard linear algebra technique. Numerical experiments show that the method effectively interpolates time-series data, generalizing to unseen test data in a manner beyond just memorizing training data; patterns in factorization also inherently followed the same numerical trend as those within algebraic methods (e.g., truncated singular-value decomposition). However, when training on the first 70% of a time-series data and testing on the remaining 30%, the method fails to meaningfully extrapolate. Despite this limiting result, the technique may have benefits for simulations in a statistical steady-state or otherwise showing temporal stability.

Visual inspection of confined spaces such as aircraft wings is ergonomically challenging for human mechanics. This work presents a novel crane robot that can travel the entire span of the aircraft wing, enabling mechanics to perform inspection from outside of the confined space. However, teleoperation of the crane robot can still be a challenge due to the need to avoid obstacles in the workspace and potential oscillations of the camera payload. The main contribution of this work is to exploit the differential flatness of the crane-robot dynamics for designing reduced-oscillation, collision-free time trajectories of the camera payload for use in teleoperation. Autonomous experiments verify the efficacy of removing undesired oscillations by 89%. Furthermore, teleoperation experiments demonstrate that the controller eliminated collisions (from 33% to 0%) when 12 participants performed an inspection task with the use of proposed trajectory selection when compared to the case without it. Moreover, even discounting the failures due to collisions, the proposed approach improved task efficiency by 18.7% when compared to the case without it., Comment: This is an extended version of an article submitted to IEEE for possible publication. Highly textured chalcogenide films have recently gained significant interest for phase-change memory applications. Several reports have highlighted that programming efficiency improves in devices featuring superlattice stacks, such as Ge2Sb2Te5/Sb2Te3. However, to be technologically relevant, these films must be deposited on foundry-scale wafers using processes compatible with back end of the line (BEOL) integration and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, such as, for example, sputter deposition. In this work, we present our observations on the influence of temperature, pressure, and seeding layer parameters on the sputter growth processes of superlattice films. By measuring various material properties, we construct a pseudo-phase diagram to illustrate the growth of both individual and superlattice films with different periodicities on technologically relevant substrates, namely SiO2 and carbon. These results provide important insights into the structure, intermixing and electro-optical properties of superlattice films

Contemporary Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) research places a significant emphasis on transfer learning, showcasing its transformative potential in enhancing model performance across diverse domains. This paper examines the efficiency and effectiveness of transfer learning in the context of wildfire detection. Three purpose-built models -- Visual Geometry Group (VGG)-7, VGG-10, and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-Support Vector Machine(SVM) CNN-SVM -- are rigorously compared with three pretrained models -- VGG-16, VGG-19, and Residual Neural Network (ResNet) ResNet101. We trained and evaluated these models using a dataset that captures the complexities of wildfires, incorporating variables such as varying lighting conditions, time of day, and diverse terrains. The objective is to discern how transfer learning performs against models trained from scratch in addressing the intricacies of the wildfire detection problem. By assessing the performance metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, a comprehensive understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of transfer learning in this specific domain is obtained. This study contributes valuable insights to the ongoing discourse, guiding future directions in AI and ML research. Model observers are computational tools to evaluate and optimize task-based medical image quality. Linear model observers, such as the Channelized Hotelling Observer (CHO), predict human accuracy in detection tasks with a few possible signal locations in clinical phantoms or real anatomic backgrounds. In recent years, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been proposed as a new type of model observer. What is not well understood is what CNNs add over the more common linear model observer approaches. We compare the CHO and CNN detection accuracy to the radiologist's accuracy in searching for two types of signals (mass and microcalcification) embedded in 2D/3D breast tomosynthesis phantoms (DBT). We show that the CHO model's accuracy is comparable to the CNN's performance for a location-known-exactly detection task. However, for the search task with 2D/3D DBT phantoms, the CHO's detection accuracy was significantly lower than the CNN accuracy. A comparison to the radiologist's accuracy showed that the CNN but not the CHO could match or exceed the radiologist's accuracy in the 2D microcalcification and 3D mass search conditions. An analysis of the eye position showed that radiologists fixated more often and longer at the locations corresponding to CNN false positives. Most CHO false positives were the phantom's normal anatomy and were not fixated by radiologists. In conclusion, we show that CNNs can be used as an anthropomorphic model observer for the search task for which traditional linear model observers fail due to their inability to discount false positives arising from the anatomical backgrounds., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

Purpose: Radiologists are tasked with visually scrutinizing large amounts of data produced by 3D volumetric imaging modalities. Small signals can go unnoticed during the 3d search because they are hard to detect in the visual periphery. Recent advances in machine learning and computer vision have led to effective computer-aided detection (CADe) support systems with the potential to mitigate perceptual errors. Approach: Sixteen non-expert observers searched through digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) phantoms and single cross-sectional slices of the DBT phantoms. The 3D/2D searches occurred with and without a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based CADe support system. The model provided observers with bounding boxes superimposed on the image stimuli while they looked for a small microcalcification signal and a large mass signal. Eye gaze positions were recorded and correlated with changes in the area under the ROC curve (AUC). Results: The CNN-CADe improved the 3D search for the small microcalcification signal (delta AUC = 0.098, p = 0.0002) and the 2D search for the large mass signal (delta AUC = 0.076, p = 0.002). The CNN-CADe benefit in 3D for the small signal was markedly greater than in 2D (delta delta AUC = 0.066, p = 0.035). Analysis of individual differences suggests that those who explored the least with eye movements benefited the most from the CNN-CADe (r = -0.528, p = 0.036). However, for the large signal, the 2D benefit was not significantly greater than the 3D benefit (delta delta AUC = 0.033, p = 0.133). Conclusion: The CNN-CADe brings unique performance benefits to the 3D (vs. 2D) search of small signals by reducing errors caused by the under-exploration of the volumetric data.

We present Gecko, a compact and versatile text embedding model. Gecko achieves strong retrieval performance by leveraging a key idea: distilling knowledge from large language models (LLMs) into a retriever. Our two-step distillation process begins with generating diverse, synthetic paired data using an LLM. Next, we further refine the data quality by retrieving a set of candidate passages for each query, and relabeling the positive and hard negative passages using the same LLM. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated by the compactness of the Gecko. On the Massive Text Embedding Benchmark (MTEB), Gecko with 256 embedding dimensions outperforms all existing entries with 768 embedding size. Gecko with 768 embedding dimensions achieves an average score of 66.31, competing with 7x larger models and 5x higher dimensional embeddings., Comment: 18 pages

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

This research addresses the pressing challenge of enhancing processing times and detection capabilities in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)/drone imagery for global wildfire detection, despite limited datasets. Proposing a Segmented Neural Network (SegNet) selection approach, we focus on reducing feature maps to boost both time resolution and accuracy significantly advancing processing speeds and accuracy in real-time wildfire detection. This paper contributes to increased processing speeds enabling real-time detection capabilities for wildfire, increased detection accuracy of wildfire, and improved detection capabilities of early wildfire, through proposing a new direction for image classification of amorphous objects like fire, water, smoke, etc. Employing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for image classification, emphasizing on the reduction of irrelevant features vital for deep learning processes, especially in live feed data for fire detection. Amidst the complexity of live feed data in fire detection, our study emphasizes on image feed, highlighting the urgency to enhance real-time processing. Our proposed algorithm combats feature overload through segmentation, addressing challenges arising from diverse features like objects, colors, and textures. Notably, a delicate balance of feature map size and dataset adequacy is pivotal. Several research papers use smaller image sizes, compromising feature richness which necessitating a new approach. We illuminate the critical role of pixel density in retaining essential details, especially for early wildfire detection. By carefully selecting number of filters during training, we underscore the significance of higher pixel density for proper feature selection. The proposed SegNet approach is rigorously evaluated using real-world dataset obtained by a drone flight and compared to state-of-the-art literature.

TU Tau (= HD 38218 = HIP 27135) is a binary system consisting of a C-N carbon star primary and an A-type secondary. We report on new photometry and spectroscopy which tracked the recent disappearance of the A-star secondary. The dimming of the A-star was gradual and irregular, with one or more brief brightenings, implying the presence of nonhomogeneities in the carbon star outflow. We also present evidence that the A-star is actively accreting s-process enriched material from the carbon star and suggest that it will therefore eventually evolve into a Barium giant. For turbulent reacting flows, identification of low-dimensional representations of the thermo-chemical state space is vitally important, primarily to significantly reduce the computational cost of device-scale simulations. Principal component analysis (PCA), and its variants, is a widely employed class of methods. Recently, an alternative technique that focuses on higher-order statistical interactions, co-kurtosis PCA (CoK-PCA), has been shown to effectively provide a low-dimensional representation by capturing the stiff chemical dynamics associated with spatiotemporally localized reaction zones. While its effectiveness has only been demonstrated based on a priori analysis with linear reconstruction, in this work, we employ nonlinear techniques to reconstruct the full thermo-chemical state and evaluate the efficacy of CoK-PCA compared to PCA. Specifically, we combine a CoK-PCA/PCA based dimensionality reduction (encoding) with an artificial neural network (ANN) based reconstruction (decoding) and examine a priori the reconstruction errors of the thermo-chemical state. In addition, we evaluate the errors in species production rates and heat release rates that are nonlinear functions of the reconstructed state as a measure of the overall accuracy of the dimensionality reduction technique. We employ four datasets to assess CoK-PCA/PCA coupled with ANN-based reconstruction: a homogeneous reactor for autoignition of an ethylene/air mixture that has conventional single-stage ignition kinetics, a dimethyl ether (DME)/air mixture which has two-stage ignition kinetics, a one-dimensional freely propagating premixed ethylene/air laminar flame, and a two-dimensional homogeneous charge compression ignition of ethanol. Quadruped robots are currently used in industrial robotics as mechanical aid to automate several routine tasks. However, presently, the usage of such a robot in a domestic setting is still very much a part of the research. This paper discusses the understanding and virtual simulation of such a robot capable of detecting and understanding human emotions, generating its gait, and responding via sounds and expression on a screen. To this end, we use a combination of reinforcement learning and software engineering concepts to simulate a quadruped robot that can understand emotions, navigate through various terrains and detect sound sources, and respond to emotions using audio-visual feedback. This paper aims to establish the framework of simulating a quadruped robot that is emotionally intelligent and can primarily respond to audio-visual stimuli using motor or audio response. The emotion detection from the speech was not as performant as ERANNs or Zeta Policy learning, still managing an accuracy of 63.5%. The video emotion detection system produced results that are almost at par with the state of the art, with an accuracy of 99.66%. Due to its "on-policy" learning process, the PPO algorithm was extremely rapid to learn, allowing the simulated dog to demonstrate a remarkably seamless gait across the different cadences and variations. This enabled the quadruped robot to respond to generated stimuli, allowing us to conclude that it functions as predicted and satisfies the aim of this work.

This article is devoted to deduce the expression of the Green's function related to a general constant coefficients fractional difference equation coupled to Dirichlet conditions. In this case, due to the points where some of the fractional operators is applied, we are in presence of a implicit fractional difference equation. Such property makes it more complicated to calculate and manage the expression of the Green's function. Such expression, on the contrary to the explicit case where it follows from finite sums, is deduced from series of infinity terms. Such expression will be deduced from the Laplace transform on the time scales of the integers. Finally, we prove two existence results for nonlinear problems, via suitable fixed point theorems.

Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a dimensionality reduction technique widely used to reduce the computational cost associated with numerical simulations of combustion phenomena. However, PCA, which transforms the thermo-chemical state space based on eigenvectors of co-variance of the data, could fail to capture information regarding important localized chemical dynamics, such as the formation of ignition kernels, appearing as \rev{extreme-valued} samples in a dataset. In this paper, we propose an alternate dimensionality reduction procedure, co-kurtosis PCA (CoK-PCA), wherein the required principal vectors are computed from a high-order joint statistical moment, namely the co-kurtosis tensor, which may better identify directions in the state space that represent stiff dynamics. We first demonstrate the potential of the proposed CoK-PCA method using a synthetically generated dataset that is representative of typical combustion simulations. Thereafter, we characterize and contrast the accuracy of CoK-PCA against PCA for datasets representing spontaneous ignition of premixed ethylene-air in a simple homogeneous reactor and ethanol-fueled homogeneous charged compression ignition (HCCI) engine. Specifically, we compare the low-dimensional manifolds in terms of reconstruction errors of the original thermo-chemical state, and species production and heat release rates computed from the reconstructed state. \rev{The latter -- a comparison of species production and heat release rates -- is a more rigorous assessment of the accuracy of dimensionality reduction.} We find that, even using a simplistic linear reconstruction, the co-kurtosis based reduced manifold represents the original thermo-chemical state more accurately than PCA, especially in the regions where chemical reactions are important.

In recent years, large pretrained models have been used in dialogue systems to improve successful task completion rates. However, lack of reasoning capabilities of dialogue platforms make it difficult to provide relevant and fluent responses, unless the designers of a conversational experience spend a considerable amount of time implementing these capabilities in external rule based modules. In this work, we propose a novel method to fine-tune pretrained transformer models such as Roberta and T5. to reason over a set of facts in a given dialogue context. Our method includes a synthetic data generation mechanism which helps the model learn logical relations, such as comparison between list of numerical values, inverse relations (and negation), inclusion and exclusion for categorical attributes, and application of a combination of attributes over both numerical and categorical values, and spoken form for numerical values, without need for additional training dataset. We show that the transformer based model can perform logical reasoning to answer questions when the dialogue context contains all the required information, otherwise it is able to extract appropriate constraints to pass to downstream components (e.g. a knowledge base) when partial information is available. We observe that transformer based models such as UnifiedQA-T5 can be fine-tuned to perform logical reasoning (such as numerical and categorical attributes' comparison) over attributes that been seen in training time (e.g., accuracy of 90\%+ for comparison of smaller than $k_{\max}$=5 values over heldout test dataset).

Conditional neural text generation models generate high-quality outputs, but often concentrate around a mode when what we really want is a diverse set of options. We present a search algorithm to construct lattices encoding a massive number of generation options. First, we restructure decoding as a best-first search, which explores the space differently than beam search and improves efficiency by avoiding pruning paths. Second, we revisit the idea of hypothesis recombination: we can identify pairs of similar generation candidates during search and merge them as an approximation. On both summarization and machine translation, we show that our algorithm encodes thousands of diverse options that remain grammatical and high-quality into one lattice. Many animals and humans process the visual field with a varying spatial resolution (foveated vision) and use peripheral processing to make eye movements and point the fovea to acquire high-resolution information about objects of interest. This architecture results in computationally efficient rapid scene exploration. Recent progress in self-attention-based Vision Transformers, an alternative to the traditionally convolution-reliant computer vision systems. However, the Transformer models do not explicitly model the foveated properties of the visual system nor the interaction between eye movements and the classification task. We propose Foveated Transformer (FoveaTer) model, which uses pooling regions and eye movements to perform object classification tasks using a Vision Transformer architecture. Using square pooling regions or biologically-inspired radial-polar pooling regions, our proposed model pools the image features from the convolution backbone and uses the pooled features as an input to transformer layers. It decides on subsequent fixation location based on the attention assigned by the Transformer to various locations from past and present fixations. It dynamically allocates more fixation/computational resources to more challenging images before making the final image category decision. Using five ablation studies, we evaluate the contribution of different components of the Foveated model. We perform a psychophysics scene categorization task and use the experimental data to find a suitable radial-polar pooling region combination. We also show that the Foveated model better explains the human decisions in a scene categorization task than a Baseline model. We demonstrate our model's robustness against PGD adversarial attacks with both types of pooling regions, where we see the Foveated model outperform the Baseline model.

In the mammalian nervous system, various synaptic plasticity rules act, either individually or synergistically, and over wide-ranging timescales to dictate the processes that enable learning and memory formation. To mimic biological cognition for artificial intelligence, neuromorphic computing platforms thus call for synthetic synapses, that can faithfully express such complex plasticity and dynamics. Although some plasticity rules have been emulated with elaborate CMOS and memristive circuitry, hardware demonstrations that combine multiple plasticities, such as long-term (LTP) and short-term plasticity (STP) with tunable dynamics and within the same low-power nanoscale devices have been missing. Here, we introduce phase change memtransistive synapse that leverages the non-volatility of memristors and the volatility of transistors for coupling LTP with homo and heterosynaptic STP effects. We show that such biomimetic synapses can enable some powerful cognitive frameworks, such as the short-term spike-timing-dependent plasticity (ST-STDP) and stochastic Hopfield neural networks. We demonstrate how, much like the mammalian brain, such emulations can establish temporal relationships in data streams for the task of sequential learning and combinatorial optimization.

Game publishers and anti-cheat companies have been unsuccessful in blocking cheating in online gaming. We propose a novel, vision-based approach that captures the final state of the frame buffer and detects illicit overlays. To this aim, we train and evaluate a DNN detector on a new dataset, collected using two first-person shooter games and three cheating software. We study the advantages and disadvantages of different DNN architectures operating on a local or global scale. We use output confidence analysis to avoid unreliable detections and inform when network retraining is required. In an ablation study, we show how to use Interval Bound Propagation to build a detector that is also resistant to potential adversarial attacks and study its interaction with confidence analysis. Our results show that robust and effective anti-cheating through machine learning is practically feasible and can be used to guarantee fair play in online gaming., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

In this article, we obtain sufficient conditions on existence, uniqueness and Ulam--Hyers stability of solutions for a coupled system of two-point nabla fractional difference boundary value problems, using Banach fixed point theorem and Urs's approach. Finally, we illustrate the applicability of established results through an example.

Fractional difference operators possess nonlocal structure which largely affects and complicates the qualitative analysis of fractional difference equations. In this article, we discuss the effect of this memory property on asymptotic behaviour of solutions of nabla fractional difference equations.

This paper deals with fractional boundary value problems involving the Hilfer fractional differential operator of order $1 < \alpha \leq 2$ and type $0 \leq \beta \leq 1$. We derive the corresponding Lyapunov-type inequalities for two prominent classes of Hilfer fractional boundary value problems (HFBVPs) involving separated and anti-periodic boundary conditions. For this purpose, we construct the associated Green's functions and deduce their important properties.

In this article, we consider a nabla fractional boundary value problem with general boundary conditions. Brackins \& Peterson \cite{Br} gave an explicit expression for the corresponding Green's function. Here, we show that this Green's function is nonnegative and obtain an upper bound for its maximum value. Since the expression for the Green's function is complicated, derivation of its properties may not be straightforward. For this purpose, we use a few properties of fractional nabla Taylor monomials. Phase change memory has been developed into a mature technology capable of storing information in a fast and non-volatile way, with potential for neuromorphic computing applications. However, its future impact in electronics depends crucially on how the materials at the core of this technology adapt to the requirements arising from continued scaling towards higher device densities. A common strategy to finetune the properties of phase change memory materials, reaching reasonable thermal stability in optical data storage, relies on mixing precise amounts of different dopants, resulting often in quaternary or even more complicated compounds. Here we show how the simplest material imaginable, a single element (in this case, antimony), can become a valid alternative when confined in extremely small volumes. This compositional simplification eliminates problems related to unwanted deviations from the optimized stoichiometry in the switching volume, which become increasingly pressing when devices are aggressively miniaturized. Removing compositional optimization issues may allow one to capitalize on nanosize effects in information storage.

In this article we establish a few Lyapunov-type inequalities for two-point discrete fractional boundary value problems involving Riemann-Liouville type backward differences. To illustrate the applicability of established results, we obtain criteria for the nonexistence of nontrivial solutions and estimate lower bounds for eigenvalues of the corresponding eigenvalue problems. We also apply these inequalities to deduce criteria for the nonexistence of real zeros of certain discrete Mittag-Leffler functions.

In this article we establish a Lyapunov-type inequality for two-point Riemann-Liouville fractional boundary value problems associated with well-posed Robin boundary conditions. To illustrate the applicability of established result, we deduce criterion for the nonexistence of real zeros of a Mittag-Leffler function.

Background. Emerging technologies now allow for mass spectrometry based profiling of up to thousands of small molecule metabolites (metabolomics) in an increasing number of biosamples. While offering great promise for revealing insight into the pathogenesis of human disease, standard approaches have yet to be established for statistically analyzing increasingly complex, high-dimensional human metabolomics data in relation to clinical phenotypes including disease outcomes. To determine optimal statistical approaches for metabolomics analysis, we sought to formally compare traditional statistical as well as newer statistical learning methods across a range of metabolomics dataset types. Results. In simulated and experimental metabolomics data derived from large population-based human cohorts, we observed that with an increasing number of study subjects, univariate compared to multivariate methods resulted in a higher false discovery rate due to substantial correlations among metabolites. In scenarios wherein the number of assayed metabolites increases, as in the application of nontargeted versus targeted metabolomics measures, multivariate methods performed especially favorably across a range of statistical operating characteristics. In nontargeted metabolomics datasets that included thousands of metabolite measures, sparse multivariate models demonstrated greater selectivity and lower potential for spurious relationships. When the number of metabolites was similar to or exceeded the number of study subjects, as is common with nontargeted metabolomics analysis of relatively small sized cohorts, sparse multivariate models exhibited the most robust statistical power with more consistent results. These findings have important implications for the analysis of metabolomics studies of human disease.

The problem of $\textit{visual metamerism}$ is defined as finding a family of perceptually indistinguishable, yet physically different images. In this paper, we propose our NeuroFovea metamer model, a foveated generative model that is based on a mixture of peripheral representations and style transfer forward-pass algorithms. Our gradient-descent free model is parametrized by a foveated VGG19 encoder-decoder which allows us to encode images in high dimensional space and interpolate between the content and texture information with adaptive instance normalization anywhere in the visual field. Our contributions include: 1) A framework for computing metamers that resembles a noisy communication system via a foveated feed-forward encoder-decoder network -- We observe that metamerism arises as a byproduct of noisy perturbations that partially lie in the perceptual null space; 2) A perceptual optimization scheme as a solution to the hyperparametric nature of our metamer model that requires tuning of the image-texture tradeoff coefficients everywhere in the visual field which are a consequence of internal noise; 3) An ABX psychophysical evaluation of our metamers where we also find that the rate of growth of the receptive fields in our model match V1 for reference metamers and V2 between synthesized samples. In this article, we illustrate the asymptotic behaviour of exponential functions of nabla fractional calculus. For this purpose, we propose a novel matrix technique to compute these functions numerically.

Novel information retrieval methods to identify citations relevant to a clinical topic can overcome the knowledge gap existing between the primary literature (MEDLINE) and online clinical knowledge resources such as UpToDate. Searching the MEDLINE database directly or with query expansion methods returns a large number of citations that are not relevant to the query. The current study presents a citation retrieval system that retrieves citations for evidence-based clinical knowledge summarization. This approach combines query expansion, concept-based screening algorithm, and concept-based vector similarity. We also propose an information extraction framework for automated concept (Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Disease) extraction. We evaluated our proposed system on all topics (as queries) available from UpToDate for two diseases, heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AFib). The system achieved an overall F-score of 41.2% on HF topics and 42.4% on AFib topics on a gold standard of citations available in UpToDate. This is significantly high when compared to a query-expansion based baseline (F-score of 1.3% on HF and 2.2% on AFib) and a system that uses query expansion with disease hyponyms and journal names, concept-based screening, and term-based vector similarity system (F-score of 37.5% on HF and 39.5% on AFib). Evaluating the system with top K relevant citations, where K is the number of citations in the gold standard achieved a much higher overall F-score of 69.9% on HF topics and 75.1% on AFib topics. In addition, the system retrieved up to 18 new relevant citations per topic when tested on ten HF and six AFib clinical topics.

To reduce the large amount of time spent screening, identifying, and recruiting patients into clinical trials, we need prescreening systems that are able to automate the data extraction and decision-making tasks that are typically relegated to clinical research study coordinators. However, a major obstacle is the vast amount of patient data available as unstructured free-form text in electronic health records. Here we propose an information extraction-based approach that first automatically converts unstructured text into a structured form. The structured data are then compared against a list of eligibility criteria using a rule-based system to determine which patients qualify for enrollment in a heart failure clinical trial. We show that we can achieve highly accurate results, with recall and precision values of 0.95 and 0.86, respectively. Our system allowed us to significantly reduce the time needed for prescreening patients from a few weeks to a few minutes. Our open-source information extraction modules are available for researchers and could be tested and validated in other cardiovascular trials. An approach such as the one we demonstrate here may decrease costs and expedite clinical trials, and could enhance the reproducibility of trials across institutions and populations.

Background: Clinical guidelines and recommendations are the driving wheels of the evidence-based medicine (EBM) paradigm, but these are available primarily as unstructured text and are generally highly heterogeneous in nature. This significantly reduces the dissemination and automatic application of these recommendations at the point of care. A comprehensive structured representation of these recommendations is highly beneficial in this regard. Objective: The objective of this paper to present Clinical Recommendation Type System (CRTS), a common type system that can effectively represent a clinical recommendation in a structured form. Methods: CRTS is built by analyzing 125 recommendations and 195 research articles corresponding to 6 different diseases available from UpToDate, a publicly available clinical knowledge system, and from the National Guideline Clearinghouse, a public resource for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Results: We show that CRTS not only covers the recommendations but also is flexible to be extended to represent information from primary literature. We also describe how our developed type system can be applied for clinical decision support, medical knowledge summarization, and citation retrieval. Conclusion: We showed that our proposed type system is precise and comprehensive in representing a large sample of recommendations available for various disorders. CRTS can now be used to build interoperable information extraction systems that automatically extract clinical recommendations and related data elements from clinical evidence resources, guidelines, systematic reviews and primary publications. In this paper, we proposed two different approaches, a rule-based approach and a machine-learning based approach, to identify active heart failure cases automatically by analyzing electronic health records (EHR). For the rule-based approach, we extracted cardiovascular data elements from clinical notes and matched patients to different colors according their heart failure condition by using rules provided by experts in heart failure. It achieved 69.4% accuracy and 0.729 F1-Score. For the machine learning approach, with bigram of clinical notes as features, we tried four different models while SVM with linear kernel achieved the best performance with 87.5% accuracy and 0.86 F1-Score. Also, from the classification comparison between the four different models, we believe that linear models fit better for this problem. Once we combine the machine-learning and rule-based algorithms, we will enable hospital-wide surveillance of active heart failure through increased accuracy and interpretability of the outputs.

Rare diseases are very difficult to identify among large number of other possible diagnoses. Better availability of patient data and improvement in machine learning algorithms empower us to tackle this problem computationally. In this paper, we target one such rare disease - cardiac amyloidosis. We aim to automate the process of identifying potential cardiac amyloidosis patients with the help of machine learning algorithms and also learn most predictive factors. With the help of experienced cardiologists, we prepared a gold standard with 73 positive (cardiac amyloidosis) and 197 negative instances. We achieved high average cross-validation F1 score of 0.98 using an ensemble machine learning classifier. Some of the predictive variables were: Age and Diagnosis of cardiac arrest, chest pain, congestive heart failure, hypertension, prim open angle glaucoma, and shoulder arthritis. Further studies are needed to validate the accuracy of the system across an entire health system and its generalizability for other diseases.

Clinicians are expected to have up-to-date and broad knowledge of disease treatment options for a patient. Online health knowledge resources contain a wealth of information. However, because of the time investment needed to disseminate and rank pertinent information, there is a need to summarize the information in a more concise format. Our aim of the study is to provide clinicians with a concise overview of popular treatments for a given disease using information automatically computed from Medline abstracts. We analyzed the treatments of two disorders - Atrial Fibrillation and Congestive Heart Failure. We calculated the precision, recall, and f-scores of our two ranking methods to measure the accuracy of the results. For Atrial Fibrillation disorder, maximum f-score for the New Treatments weighing method is 0.611, which occurs at 60 treatments. For Congestive Heart Failure disorder, maximum f-score for the New Treatments weighing method is 0.503, which occurs at 80 treatments.

Community-based Question Answering (CQA) sites play an important role in addressing health information needs. However, a significant number of posted questions remain unanswered. Automatically answering the posted questions can provide a useful source of information for online health communities. In this study, we developed an algorithm to automatically answer health-related questions based on past questions and answers (QA). We also aimed to understand information embedded within online health content that are good features in identifying valid answers. Our proposed algorithm uses information retrieval techniques to identify candidate answers from resolved QA. In order to rank these candidates, we implemented a semi-supervised leaning algorithm that extracts the best answer to a question. We assessed this approach on a curated corpus from Yahoo! Answers and compared against a rule-based string similarity baseline. On our dataset, the semi-supervised learning algorithm has an accuracy of 86.2%. UMLS-based (health-related) features used in the model enhance the algorithm's performance by proximately 8 %. A reasonably high rate of accuracy is obtained given that the data is considerably noisy. Important features distinguishing a valid answer from an invalid answer include text length, number of stop words contained in a test question, a distance between the test question and other questions in the corpus as well as a number of overlapping health-related terms between questions. Overall, our automated QA system based on historical QA pairs is shown to be effective according to the data set in this case study. A systematic review identifies and collates various clinical studies and compares data elements and results in order to provide an evidence based answer for a particular clinical question. The process is manual and involves lot of time. A tool to automate this process is lacking. The aim of this work is to develop a framework using natural language processing and machine learning to build information extraction algorithms to identify data elements in a new primary publication, without having to go through the expensive task of manual annotation to build gold standards for each data element type. The system is developed in two stages. Initially, it uses information contained in existing systematic reviews to identify the sentences from the PDF files of the included references that contain specific data elements of interest using a modified Jaccard similarity measure. These sentences have been treated as labeled data.A Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier is trained on this labeled data to extract data elements of interests from a new article. We conducted experiments on Cochrane Database systematic reviews related to congestive heart failure using inclusion criteria as an example data element. The empirical results show that the proposed system automatically identifies sentences containing the data element of interest with a high recall (93.75%) and reasonable precision (27.05% - which means the reviewers have to read only 3.7 sentences on average). The empirical results suggest that the tool is retrieving valuable information from the reference articles, even when it is time-consuming to identify them manually. Thus we hope that the tool will be useful for automatic data extraction from biomedical research publications. The future scope of this work is to generalize this information framework for all types of systematic reviews.

We propose NEMO, a system for extracting organization names in the affiliation and normalizing them to a canonical organization name. Our parsing process involves multi-layered rule matching with multiple dictionaries. The system achieves more than 98% f-score in extracting organization names. Our process of normalization that involves clustering based on local sequence alignment metrics and local learning based on finding connected components. A high precision was also observed in normalization. NEMO is the missing link in associating each biomedical paper and its authors to an organization name in its canonical form and the Geopolitical location of the organization. This research could potentially help in analyzing large social networks of organizations for landscaping a particular topic, improving performance of author disambiguation, adding weak links in the co-author network of authors, augmenting NLM's MARS system for correcting errors in OCR output of affiliation field, and automatically indexing the PubMed citations with the normalized organization name and country. Our system is available as a graphical user interface available for download along with this paper.

Overall, the two main contributions of this work include the application of sentence simplification to association extraction as described above, and the use of distributional semantics for concept extraction. The proposed work on concept extraction amalgamates for the first time two diverse research areas -distributional semantics and information extraction. BioSimplify is an open source tool written in Java that introduces and facilitates the use of a novel model for sentence simplification tuned for automatic discourse analysis and information extraction (as opposed to sentence simplification for improving human readability). The model is based on a "shot-gun" approach that produces many different (simpler) versions of the original sentence by combining variants of its constituent elements. This tool is optimized for processing biomedical scientific literature such as the abstracts indexed in PubMed. We tested our tool on its impact to the task of PPI extraction and it improved the f-score of the PPI tool by around 7%, with an improvement in recall of around 20%. The complexity of sentences characteristic to biomedical articles poses a challenge to natural language parsers, which are typically trained on large-scale corpora of non-technical text. We propose a text simplification process, bioSimplify, that seeks to reduce the complexity of sentences in biomedical abstracts in order to improve the performance of syntactic parsers on the processed sentences. Syntactic parsing is typically one of the first steps in a text mining pipeline. Thus, any improvement in performance would have a ripple effect over all processing steps. We evaluated our method using a corpus of biomedical sentences annotated with syntactic links. Social Network Analysis (SNA) of organizations can attract great interest from government agencies and scientists for its ability to boost translational research and accelerate the process of converting research to care. For SNA of a particular disease area, we need to identify the key research groups in that area by mining the affiliation information from PubMed. This not only involves recognizing the organization names in the affiliation string, but also resolving ambiguities to identify the article with a unique organization. We present here a process of normalization that involves clustering based on local sequence alignment metrics and local learning based on finding connected components. Automatically extracting organization names from the affiliation sentences of articles related to biomedicine is of great interest to the pharmaceutical marketing industry, health care funding agencies and public health officials. It will also be useful for other scientists in normalizing author names, automatically creating citations, indexing articles and identifying potential resources or collaborators. Accurate systems for extracting Protein-Protein Interactions (PPIs) automatically from biomedical articles can help accelerate biomedical research. Biomedical Informatics researchers are collaborating to provide metaservices and advance the state-of-art in PPI extraction. One problem often neglected by current Natural Language Processing systems is the characteristic complexity of the sentences in biomedical literature. We study the performance of achromatic half-wave plates (AHWP) as a function of their construction parameters, the detection bandwidth of a power detector operating in the millimeter wave band, and the spectral shape of the incident radiation. We focus particular attention on the extraction of the degree of incident polarization and its orientation angle from the intensity measured as a function of AHWP rotation angle, which we call the IVA (intensity versus angle). We quantify the phase offset of the IVA and point to potential systematic errors in the extraction of this offset in cases where the incident spectrum is not sufficiently well known. We show how the phase offset and modulation efficiency of the AHWP depend on the relative angles between the plates in the stack and find that high modulation efficiency can be achieved with alignment accuracy of few degrees., Comment: submitted to Applied Optics
