Search

The paper gives a few examples of the phenomena that will never be understood by the mankind. The first example is the physics at the scales of $\sim 10^{-33}$ cm where the gravitation interaction becomes strong, sales at the very beginning of the Big Bang. It argues that the mankind will never establish the laws that controls the events at these scales. Further, it is supposed that the time dependence of the entropy, which determine the direction of the time arrow, originates at the same time scale and, thus, the nature of the time arrow will be never established either. Finally, I conjecture that the brain cells are controlled by quantum computer with the very large (or even infinite) number of degenerate states. The theoretical investigations at ITEP in the years 1945-1958 are reviewed. It is demonstrated that the strong power-like scaling violation in the transverse momentum distribution of inclusive hadron production, observed by CDF Collaboration in $\bar{p}p$ collisions at Tevatron is caused by contribution of weak interaction. It is demonstrated, that chirality violating condensates in massless QCD arise entirely from zero mode solutions of Dirac equations in arbitrary gluon fields. The model is suggested, where the zero mode solutions are the ones for quarks, moving in the instanton field. Basing on this model were calculated the quark condensate magnetic susceptibilities of dimensions $3(\chi)$ and 5 ($\kappa$ and $\xi$). The good considence of the values $\chi,\kappa$ and $\xi$, obtained in this approach with ones, found from the hadronic spectrum ia a serious argument in favour, that instantons are the only source of chirality violating condensates in QCD. The temperature dependence of the quark condensate is discussed. A short review is presented of the spontaneous violation of chiral symmetry in QCD vacuum. It is demonstrated, that this phenomenon is the origin of baryon masses in QCD. The value of nucleon mass is calculated as well as the masses of hyperons and some baryonic resonances and expressed mainly through the values of quark condensates -- $<0\mid \bar{q} q \mid 0>, ~q=u,d,s$ -- the vacuum expectation values (v.e.v.) of quark field. The concept of vacuum expectation values induced by external fields is introduced. It is demonstrated that such v.e.v. induced by static electromagnetic field results in quark condensate magnetic susceptibility, which plays the main role in determination of baryon magnetic moments. The magnetic moments of proton, neutron and hyperons are calculated. The results of calculation of baryon octet $\beta$-decay constants are also presented., Comment: 13 pades, 5 figures. In this report, I discuss the current state of the problem of the axial anomaly in quantum electrodynamics (QED) and quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and how the axial anomaly is related to the structure of the vacuum in QCD. In QCD, the vacuum average of the axial anomaly is proportional to a new quantum number n, the winding number. The axial anomaly condition implies that there are zero modes of the Dirac equation for a massless quark and that there is spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD, which leads to the formation of a quark condensate. The axial anomaly can be represented in the form of a sum rule the structure function in the dispersion representation of the axial -- vector -- vector (AVV) vertex. On the basis of this sum rule, it is calculated the width of the \pi^0\to 2\gamma decay with an accuracy of 1.5%. The anomaly in the vacuum expectation value of the product of axial and two vector currents (AVV) in QCD is investigated. The goal is to determine from its value the $\pi^0 \to 2 \gamma$ decay width with high precision. The sum rule for AVV formfactor is studied. The difference $f_{\pi^0} - f_{\pi^+}$ caused by strong interaction is calculated and appears to be small. The $\pi^0 - \eta$ mixing is accounted. The $\pi^0 \to 2 \gamma$ decay width determined theoretically from the axial anomaly is found to be $\Gamma(\pi^0 \to 2 \gamma) = 7.93 eV$ with an error $\sim 1.5%$. The measurement of the $\pi^0 \to 2 \gamma$ decay width at the same level of accuracy would allow one to achieve a high precision test of QCD., Comment: 8 pages, few misprints are corrected

The modern status of the problem of axial anomaly in QED and QCD is reviewed. Two methods of the derivation of the axial anomaly are presented: 1) by splitting of coordinates in the expression for the axial current and 2) by calculation of triangle diagrams, where the anomaly arises from the surface terms in momentum space. It is demonstrated, that the equivalent formulation of the anomaly can be given, as a sum rule for the structure function in dispersion representation of three point function of AVV interaction. It is argued, that such integral representation of the anomaly has some advantages in the case of description of the anomaly by contribution of hadronic states in QCD. The validity of the t'Hooft consistency condition is discussed. Radiative decays of the spin 1/2 baryonic resonances R with the decay mode R -> KN in case of small energy release are considered. Pentaquark is an example of such resonance. It is shown that in case of positive resonance parity corrections to the soft photon radiation formula are large even at low photon energies > 20 MeV and structure terms contributions may be essential, if R size > 1 fm. This effect is absent in case of negative parity. Particularly, measurements of the gamma spectrum in pentaquark radiative decays may allow us to determine its parity., Comment: 5 pages

The modern status of basic low energy QCD parameters is reviewed. It is demonstrated, that the recent data allows one to determine the light quark mass ratios with an accuracy 10-15%. The general analysis of vacuum condensates in QCD is presented, including those induced by external fields. The QCD coupling constant alpha_s is found from the tau-lepton hadronic decay rate. V-A spectral functions of tau-decay are used for construction of the V-A polarization operator Pi_{V-A}(s) in the complex s-plane. The operator product expansion (OPE) is used up to dimension D=10 and the sum rules along the rays in the complex s-plane are constructed. The best values of quark condensate and alpha_s<0|qq|0>^2 are found. The value of quark condensate is confirmed by considering the sum rules for baryon masses. Gluon condensate is found in four ways: by considering of V+A polarization operator based on the tau-decay data, by studying the sum rules for polarization operators momenta in charmonia in vector, pseudoscalar and axial channels. All of these determinations are in agreement and result in <(alpha_s/pi)G^2 > =0.005 \pm 0.004 GeV^4. Valence quark distributions in proton are calculated in QCD using the OPE in proton current virtuality. The quark distributions agree with those found from the deep inelastic scattering data. A qualitative analysis of the chiral phase transition in QCD at non--zero baryon density is performed. It is assumed that at zero baryonic density, $\rho=0$, the temperature phase transition is of the second order and quark condesate $\eta= \mid < 0\mid \bar{u} u\mid 0> \mid =\mid< 0 \mid \bar{d}d\mid 0 >\mid $ may be taken as order parameter of phase transition. It is demonstrated, that the proportionality of baryon masses to quark condensate in the power 1/3, $m_B \sim \mid < 0 \mid {\bar q} q \mid 0 > \mid^{1/3}$ is valid in the wide interval of quark condensate values. By supposing, that such specific dependence of baryon masses on quark condensate takes place up to phase transition point, it is shown, that at finite baryon density $\rho$ the phase transition becomes of the first order at the temperature $T=T_{\mathrm{ph}}(\rho)$ for $\rho>0$. At temperatures $T_{\mathrm{cont}}(\rho) > T > T_{\mathrm{ph}}(\rho)$ there is a mixed phase consisting of the quark phase (stable) and the hadron phase (unstable). It is shown, that if the pentaquark $\Theta^+ = uudd\bar{s}$ baryon can be represented by the local quark current $\eta_{\Theta}$, its decay $\Theta^+ \to n K^+ (p K^0)$ is forbidden in the limit of chirality conservation. The $\Theta^+$decay width $\Gamma$ is proportional to $\alpha^2_s < 0 | \bar{q} q | 0 >^2$, where $<0 | \bar{q} q | 0 >$, $q = u,d,s$ is quark condensate, and, therefore, is strongly suppressed. The antideuteron and antihelium-3 production rates at high-energy heavy ion collisions are calculated in the framework of fusion mechanism. It is supposed, that anti-p,n,d,^3He participating in the fusion are moving in the mean field of other fireball constituents. It is demonstrated that at high energies, where many pions are present in the fireball, the number of produced anti-d and ^3He is determined by the balance between created and desintegrated (mainly in collisions with pions) anti-d and ^3He. In e^+e^- annihilation at \sqrt{s}=10.6 GeV Belle Collaboration found, that J/psi mesons are predominantly produced in association with an extra \bar{c}c pair. The possible mechanisms of J/psi production are discussed and the probability of the associate production of \bar{c}c pair is estimated. The choice between these mechanisms can be done by measuring J/psi polarization. It is suggested, that in case of heavy ion collisions one may expect remarkable transverse polarization of produced J/psi, if quark-gluon plasma if formed. The polarization of quarkonium states produced in hadron collisions exhibits strong non-perturbative effects - for example, at small transverse momentum $p_t$ charmonia appear unpolarized, in sharp contradiction to the predictions of perturbation theory. The quark--gluon plasma is expected to screen away the non-perturbative physics; therefore those quarkonia which escape from the plasma should possess polarization as predicted by perturbative QCD. We estimate the expected $J/\psi$ polarization at small $p_t$, and find that it translates into the asymmetry of the $e^+e^- (\mu^+\mu^-)$ angular distribution $W(\theta) \sim 1 + \alpha cos^2\theta$, with $\alpha \simeq 0.35 \div 0.4$., Comment: 4 pages, no figures

Recently, several surprising experimental observations in the production of heavy quarkonium have been reported. In $e^+e^-$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s}=10.6$ GeV, Belle Collaboration finds that $J/\psi$ mesons are predominantly produced in association with an extra $\bar{c}c$ pair, with $\sigma(e^+e^- \to J/\psi \bar{c}c) / \sigma(e^+e^- \to J/\psi X) = 0.59^{+0.15}_{-0.13}\pm 0.12$, and the BaBar collaboration reports that the produced $J/\psi$'s have mostly longitudinal polarization. In $\bar{p}p$ collisions at the Tevatron, the CDF Collaboration reported an excess of $J/\psi$ and $\psi^{\prime}$ mesons at high $p_{\perp}$ over the perturbative QCD predictions; non--perturbative approach of NRQCD can accomodate the magnitude of the production cross section but not the observed experimentally polarization of quarkonia. The antideuteron production rate at high-energy heavy ions collisions is calculated basing on the concept of anti-d formation by antinucleons which move in the mean field of the fireball constituents (mainly pions). It is shown, that the correlators of vector and axial-vector currents at finite temperature T in order T^2 reduce to mixing of vacuum VV and AA correlators with universal mixing coefficient given by the parameter \epsilon = T^2/6 F^2_{\pi}, unlike the claim in the recent paper by Mallik and Sarkar [1]., Comment: Typos were corrected, one reference was added, 2 pages, LaTeX 2e

The recent results in QCD at low energies are reported. The theoretical analysis of hadronic tau-decay is performed in complex q^2-plane. The terms of perturbation theory (PT) up to alpha^3_s are accounted, the terms of operator product expansion (OPE) -- up do dimension 8. The momenta of charmed quark vector current polarization operator are analyzed in 3 loops with account of dimension 4 and 6 OPE terms. The main conclusion is that in the range of low-energy phenomena under consideration PT and OPE are in good agreement with experiment starting from Q^2=-q^2 ~ 1 GeV^2. The general method for calculation of valence quark distributions in hadrons at intermediate $x$ is presented. The imaginary part of virtual photon forward scattering amplitude on quark current with hadron quantum number is considered in the case, when initial and final virtualities of the current $p^2_1$ and $p^2_2$ are different, negative and large: $\mid p^2_1\mid, \mid p^2_2\mid\gg R^{-2}_c$, where $R_c$ is confinement radius. The operator product expansion (OPE) in $p^2_1,p^2_2$ up to dimension 6 operators is performed. Double dispersion representations in $p^2_1, p^2_2$ of the amplitude in terms of physical states contributions are used. Equalling them to those calculated in QCD by OPE the desired sum rules for quark distributions in mesons are found. The double Borel transformations are applied to the sum rules, killing non-diagonal transition terms, which deteriorated the accuracy in the previous calculations of quark distributions in nucleon. Leading order perturbative corrections are accounted. Valence quark distributions in pion, longitudinally and transversally polarized $\rho$-mesons and proton are calculated at intermediate $x$, $0.2 \la x \la 0.7$ and normalization points $Q^2 = 2-5 \~GeV^2$ with no fitting parameters. In cases of pion and proton the results are in agreement with found correspondingly from the data on the Drell-Yan process and deep inelastic scattering. Valence quark distributions in transversally and longitudinally polarized $\rho$-mesons are essentially different one from another and also differ from those in pion., Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX 2e, 5 eps figures included

Valence u- and d-quarks distributions in proton are calculated in QCD at low $Q^2$ and intermediate x, basing on the operator product expansion (OPE). The imaginary part of the virtual photon scattering amplitude on quark current with proton quantum numbers is considered. The initial and final virtualities $p^2_1$ and $p^2_2$ of the currents are assumed to be large, negative and different, $p^2_1 \not= p^2_2$. The OPE in $p^2_1$, $p^2_2$ up to dimension 6 operators was performed. Double dispersion representations in $p^2_1, p^2_2$ of the amplitudes in terms of physical states contributions are used. Putting them to be equal to those calculated in QCD, the sum rules for quark distributions are found. The double Borel transformations are applied to the sum rules. Leading order perturbative corrections are accounted. Valence quark distributions are found: $u(x)_v$ at $0.15

The paper presents the short review of our to-day knowledge of vacuum condensates in QCD. The condensates are defined as vacuum averages of the operators which arise due to nonperturbative effects. The important role of condensates in determination of physical properties of hadrons and of their low-energy interactions in QCD is underlined. The special value of quark condensate, connected with the existence of baryon masses is mentioned. Vacuum condensates induced by external fields are discussed. QCD at low energy is checked on the basis of the data on hadronic tau-decay. In the theoretical analysis the terms of perturbation theory (PT) up to alpha^3_s are accounted, in the operator product expansion (OPE) - those up to dimension 8. The total probability of the decay tau->hadrons (with zero strangeness) and of the tau-decay structure functions are best described at alpha_s(m^2_tau) = 0.330+-0.025. It is shown that the Borel sum rules for tau-decay structure functions along the rays in the q^2-complex plane are in agreement with the experiment with the accuracy ~2% at the values of the Borel parameter |M^2|> 0.8 GeV^2. The magnitudes of dimensions 6 and 8 condensates were found and the limitations on gluonic condensates were obtained. The sum rules for the charmed quark vector currents polarization operator was analysed in 3 loops (i.e., in order alpha^2_s). The value of charmed quark mass (in MS-bar regularization scheme) was found to be: m_c(m_c) = 1.275+-0.015 GeV and the value of gluonic condensate was estimated: <(alpha_s/pi)G^2> = 0.009+-0.007 GeV^4. The general conclusion is: QCD described by PT + OPE is in a good agreement with experiment at Q^2 >~ 1 GeV^2., Comment: submitted to Phys. Atom. Charmonium sum rules are analyzed with the primary goal to obtain the restrictions on the value of dimension 4 gluon condensate. The moments M_n(Q^2) of the polarization operator of vector charm currents are calculated and compared with experimental data. The 3-loop (alpha_s^2) perturbative corrections, the gluon condensate contribution with alpha_s corrections and dimension 6 operator G^3 contribution are accounted. It is shown that the sum rules for the moments do not work at Q^2=0, where the perturbation series diverges and G^3 contribution is large. The domain in the plane (n, Q^2), where the sum rules are legitimate, is found. Strong correlation of the values of gluon condensate and MS-bar charm quark mass quark is determined. The absolute limits are found to be for gluon condensate <(alpha_s/pi)G^2>=0.009+-0.007 GeV^4 and for charm quark mass m(m)=1.275+-0.015 GeV in MS-bar scheme., Comment: 23 pages, 1 latex + 9 eps files. v2: additions to sections 2 and 8, conclusion unchanged; to be published in EPJC

Total and differential cross sections from literature, on the production of K+ mesons in pA interactions at projectile energies between T=0.8 and 2.9 GeV, covering the transition across the free nucleon-nucleon threshold at 1.58 GeV, have been investigated. From the target-mass dependence of the production cross sections no evidence for the expected change of the dominant reaction mechanism from two-step to direct kaon production was found. At T=1.0 GeV the A dependences of the total cross sections and of the most recent data from COSY-Juelich, differential cross sections measured under forward angles, are strongly different. The invariant K+ production cross sections show an overall exponential scaling behavior with the squared four-momentum transfer between the beam proton and the produced K+ meson for t< -0.05 GeV^2 independent of the beam energy and emission angle. The data from COSY-Juelich reveal a strongly different t dependence in the region of t>0 GeV^2. The thorough analysis of the ALEPH data on hadronic tau-decay is performed in the framework of QCD. The perturbative calculations are performed in 3 and 4-loop approximations. The terms of the operator product expansion (OPE) are accounted up to dimension D=8. The value of the QCD coupling constant alpha_s(m_tau^2)=0.355 pm 0.025 was found from hadronic branching ratio R_tau. The V+A and V spectral function are analyzed using analytical properties of polarization operators in the whole complex q^2-plane. Borel sum rules in the complex q^2 plane along the rays, starting from the origin, are used. It was demonstrated that QCD with OPE terms is in agreement with the data for the coupling constant close to the lower error edge alpha_s(m_tau^2)=0.330. The restriction on the value of the gluonic condensate was found <(alpha_s/pi)G^2>=0.006 pm 0.012 GeV^2. The analytical perturbative QCD was compared with the data. It is demonstrated to be in strong contradiction with experiment. The restrictions on the renormalon contribution were found. The instanton contributions to the polarization operator are analyzed in various sum rules. In Borel transformation they appear to be small, but not in spectral moments sum rules., Comment: 24 pages; 1 latex + 13 figure files. The review of chiral effective theory (CET) is given. CET is based on quantum chromodynamics and describes the processes of strong interaction at low energies. It is proved, that CET comes as a consequence of the spontaneous violation of chiral symmetry in QCD - the appearance of chiral symmetry violating vacuum condensates. The Goldstone theorem for the case of QCD is proved and the existence of the octet of massless Goldstone bosons (pi, K, eta) is demonstrated in the limit of massless u,d,s quarks (or the triplet of massless pions in the limit m_u,m_d->0). It is shown, that the same phenomenon - the appearance of quark condensate in QCD - which causes the Goldstone bosons, results in appearance of violating chiral symmetry massive baryons. The general form of CET Lagrangian is derived. Few examples of higher order corrections to tree diagrams in CET are given. The Wess-Zumino term (of order p^4 term in CET Lagrangian) is presented. Low energy sum rules are presented. QCD and CET at finite temperature are discussed. In the framework of CET the T^2 correction to quark condensate in QCD at finite temperature T is calculated and the results of higher order temperature corrections are demonstrated. These results indicate on phase transition in QCD at T \sim 150-200 MeV. The mixing of current correlators in order T^2 is proved., Comment: 36 pages, 7 figures

The method for calculation of valence quark distributions at intermediate $x$ is presented. The imaginary part of the virtual photon forward scattering amplitude on the quark current with meson quantum number is considered. Initial and final virtualities $p^2_1$ and $p^2_2$ of the currents are assumed to be large, negative and different, $p^2_1 \not= p^2_2$. The operator product expansion (OPE) in $p^2_1, p^2_2$ up to dimension 6 operators is performed. Double dispersion representations in $p^2_1, p^2_2$ of the amplitude in terms of physical states contributions are used. Equalling them to those calculated in QCD by OPE the desired sum rules for quark distributions in mesons are found. The double Borel transformations are applied to the sum rules, killing non-diagonal transition terms, which deteriorated the accuracy in the previous calculations of quark distributions in nucleon. Leading order perturbative corrections are accounted. Valence quark distributions in pion, longitudinally and transversally polarized $\rho$-mesons are calculated at intermediate $x$, $0.2 \la x \la 0.7$ and normalization points $Q^2 = 2-4 GeV^2$ with no fitting parameters. The use of the Regge behaviour at small $x$ and quark counting rules at large $x$ allows one to find the first and the second moments of valence quark distributions. The obtained quark distributions may be used as an input for evolution equations. The operator product expansion (OPE) for the difference of vector and axial current correlators is analyzed for complex values of momentum q^2. The vector and axial spectral functions, taken from hadronic tau-decay data, are treated with the help of Borel, Gaussian and spectral moments sum rules. The range of applicability, advantages and disadvantages of each type are discussed. The general features of OPE are confirmed by the data. The vacuum expectation values of dimension 6 and 8 operators are found to be O_6=-(6.8\pm 2.1)*10^{-3} GeV^6, O_8=(7\pm 4)*10^{-3} GeV^8., Comment: 1 latex + 10 eps files, 14 pages

Our recent work on modifications of rho-mesons formed at the last stage of evolution of hadronic matter produced in heavy ion collisions is summarized. We develope the method of improvement of perturbative theory in QCD, applied to any polarization operator. The case of polarization operator \Pi(q^2), corresponding to the process e^+e^- -> hadrons is considered in details. Using the analytical properties of \Pi(q^2) and perturbative expansion of \Pi(q^2) at q^2<0, Im\Pi(q^2) at q^2>0 is determined in such a way, that the infared pole is eliminated. The convergence of perturbative series for R(q^2)=\sigma(e^+e^- -> hadrons)/(e^+e^- -> \mu^+\mu^-) is improved. After substitution of R(q^2) into dispersion relation the improved Adler function D(q^2) with no infrared pole and frozen \alpha_s(q^2) has been obtained. The QCD sum rule for the correlator of topological charge densities and related to it longitudinal part of the correlator of singlet axial currents is considered in the framework of instanton model. The coupling constant of eta'-meson with the singlet axial current is determined. Its value appears to be in a good coincidence with the value determined recently from the connection of the part of proton spin, carried by u,d,s quarks, with the derivative of QCD topological susceptibility. From the same sum rule eta-eta' mixing angle is found in the framework of two mixing angles model. Its value is close to that found in the chiral effective theory. The correlator of topological charge densities at large momenta is calculated., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures

Vacuum correlator of topological charge densities $\chi(q^2)$ at low $q^2$ in QCD is discussed: its value $\chi(0)$ and first derivative $\chi'(0)$ at $q^2=0$ and the contributions of pseudoscalar quasi-Goldstone bosons to $\chi(q^2)$ at low $q^2$. The QCD sum rule \cite{1}, giving the connection of $\chi'(0)$ (for massless quarks) with the part of the proton spin $\Sigma$, carried by $u,d,s$ quarks, is presented. From the requirement of selfconsistancy of the sum rule the values of $\chi'(0)$ and $\Sigma$ were found. The same value of $\chi'(0)$ follows also from the experimental data on $\Sigma$. The contributions of $\pi$ and $\eta$ to $\chi(q^2)$ are calculated basing on low energy theorems. In such calculation the $\pi-\eta$ mixing, expressed in terms of quark mass ratios is of importance., Comment: V. The correlator of topological charge densities $\chi(Q^2)$ in QCD is calculated in the domain of low $Q^2$. Basing on the Ward identities the low energy theorems are proved. The value of the first derivative $\chi^{\prime}(0)$ found recently by QCD sum rules \cite{1} is used. An important contribution comes from the operator of dimension 3, which in the limit of massless $u, d, s$ quarks is equal to the derivative of QCD topological susceptibility $\chi^{\prime} (0)$. The comparison with the experimental data on $\Sigma$ gives $\chi^{\prime}(0)= (2.3 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-3} ~ GeV^2$. The mass shift $\Delta m_{\rho}$ and width broadening $\Delta\Gamma_{\rho}$ of $\rho$ mesons produced in heavy ion collisions is estimated using a general formula which relates the in-medium mass shift of a particle to the real part of the forward scattering amplitude ${\rm Re} f(E)$ of this particle on constituents of the medium and $\Delta\Gamma$ to the corresponding cross section. It is found that in high energy ($E/A \ga 100~$GeV) heavy ion collisions the $\rho$ width broadening is large and $\rho$ (or $\omega$) peak could hardly be observed in $e^+e^-(\mu^+\mu^-)$ effective mass distributions. The review of current experimental situation in the measurements of the first moment $\Gamma_{p,n}$ of spin dependent nucleon structure functions $g_{1;p,n}(x,Q^2)$ is presented. The results of the calculations of twist-4 corrections to $\Gamma_{p,n}$ are discussed and their accuracy is estimated. The determination of twist-4 corrections to the structure functions of polarized $e(\mu)N$ scattering by QCD sum rules is reviewed and critically analyzed. It is found that in the case of the Bjorken sum rule the twist-4 correction is small at $Q^2 > 5 GeV^2$. However, the accuracy of the today experimental data is insufficient to reliably determine $\alpha_s$ from the Bjorken sum rule. For the singlet sum rule -- $p+n$ -- the QCD sum rule gives only the order of magnitude of twist-4 correction. At low and intermediate $Q^2$ the model is presented which realizes a smooth connection of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rules at $Q^2 = 0$ with the sum rules for $\Gamma_{p,n}(Q^2)$ at high $Q^2$.
