We present a study of spectral line width measurements from the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on {\it Hinode}. We used spectral line profiles of Fe {\sc xvi} 262.984 {\AA}, Fe {\sc xiv} 264.787 {\AA}, Fe {\sc xiv} 270.519 {\AA}, Fe {\sc xiv} 274.203 {\AA}, and Fe {\sc xv} 284.160 {\AA}, and studied 11 active regions. Previous studies of spectral line widths have shown that in hot loops in the cores of active regions, the observed non-thermal velocities are smaller than predicted from models of reconnection jets in the corona or shock heating associated with Alfv\'{e}n waves. The observed line widths are also inconsistent with models of chromospheric evaporation due to coronal nanoflares. We show that recent advances in higher resolution Alfv\'{e}n wave turbulence modeling enables us to obtain non-thermal velocities similar to those measured in active regions. The observed non-thermal velocities for the 11 active regions in our study are in the range of 17$-$30 $\rm km ~ s^{-1}$, consistent with the spectral line non-thermal widths predicted from our model of 16 interacting flux tubes, which are in the range of ~15$-$37 $\rm km ~ s^{-1}$.

We present Ir $4f$ core-level hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) experiments conducted across antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering transition in Ruddlesden-Popper iridates Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. The Ir $4f$ spectra exhibit distinct changes between the AFM and paramagnetic (PM) phases, with the spectral difference $I_\text{PM}-I_\text{AFM}$ showing a contrasting behavior in the two compounds. By employing computational simulations using the local-density approximation combined with the dynamical mean-field theory method, we elucidate that $I_\text{PM}-I_\text{AFM}$ primary reflects the Slater or Mott-Hubbard character of the AFM insulating state rather than material specific details. This sensitivity to fine low-energy electronic structure arises from the dependence of charge-transfer responses to the sudden creation of a localized core hole on both metal-insulator transitions and long-range AFM ordering. We report the ground-state symmetry of the Ce $4f$ states in the heavy fermion superconductor CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$, yielding anisotropic $cf$-hybridization between the Ce $4f$ states and conducting electrons. By analyzing linear dichroism in soft x-ray absorption and core-level hard x-ray photoemission spectra, the $4f$ symmetry is determined as $\Sigma$-type $\Gamma_{7}$, promoting predominant hybridization with the conducting electrons originating from the Ge site. The band structures probed by the soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission indicates that the Ge $4p$ components contribute to the band renormalization through the anisotropic hybridization effects, suggesting that the control of the electronic structures of Ge orbital gives an impact to achieve the exotic phenomena in CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$.

The physical connection between thermal convection in the solar interior and the solar wind remains unclear due to their significant scale separation. Using an extended version of the three-dimensional radiative magnetohydrodynamic code RAMENS, we perform the first comprehensive simulation of the solar wind formation, starting from the wave excitation and the small-scale dynamo below the photosphere. The simulation satisfies various observational constraints as a slow solar wind emanating from the coronal hole boundary. The magnetic energy is persistently released in the simulated corona, showing a hot upward flow at the interface between open and closed fields. To evaluate the energetic contributions from Alfv\'en wave and interchange reconnection, we develop a new method to quantify the cross-field energy transport in the simulated atmosphere. The measured energy transport from closed coronal loops to open field accounts for approximately half of the total. These findings suggest a significant role of the supergranular-scale interchange reconnection in solar wind formation., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

In this study, we investigate the bulk electronic structure of Pb-substituted LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ single crystals, using two types of hard-x-ray spectroscopy. High-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed a spectral change at low temperatures. Using density functional theory (DFT) simulations, we find that the temperature-induced change originates from a structural phase transition, similar to the pressure-induced transition in LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$. This finding suggests that the mechanism of bulk superconductivity induced by Pb substitution is the same as that under high pressure. Furthermore, a novel low-valence state with a mixture of divalent and trivalent Bi ions is discovered using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with the aid of DFT calculations., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

This study on plasma heating considers the time-dependent ionization process during a large solar flare on September 10, 2017, observed by Hinode/EIS. The observed FeXXIV / FeXXIII ratios increase downstream of the reconnection outflow, and they are consistent with the time-dependent ionization effect at a constant electron temperature Te = 25 MK. Moreover, this study also shows that the non-thermal velocity, which can be related to the turbulent velocity, reduces significantly along the downstream of the reconnection outflow, even when considering the time-dependent ionization process., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Recently synthesized Rh-Ni trinuclear complexes hexacoordinated with sulfur ions, 3-aminopropanethiolate (apt) metalloligand [Ni{Rh(apt)$_{3}$}$_{2}$](NO$_{3}$)$_{n}$ ($n$ = 2, 3, 4), are found to be chemically interconvertible between the nominal Ni$^{2+}$ and Ni$^{4+}$ states. In order to clarify the origins of their interconvertible nature and the stability of such a high oxidation state as the tetravalency from the physical point of view, we have systematically investigated the local 3$d$ electronic structures of [Ni{Rh(apt)$_{3}$}$_{2}$](NO$_{3}$)$_{n}$ by means of soft X-ray core-level absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The experimental data have been reproduced by the single-site configuration-interaction cluster-model simulations, which indicate that the charge-transferred configurations are more stable than the nominal $d$-electron-number configuration for $n=3,4$ leading to the prominent charge-transfer effects. These are also supported by S $K$-edge XAS of [Ni{Rh(apt)$_{3}$}$_{2}$](NO$_{3}$)$_{n}$. Our results imply that the found charge-transfer effects have a key role to realize the interconvertible nature as well as the stability of the high oxidization state of the Ni ions., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

The morphological asymmetry of leading and following sunspots is a well-known characteristic of the solar surface. In the context of large-scale evolution of the surface magnetic field, the asymmetry has been assumed to have only a negligible effect. Using the surface flux transport model, we show that the morphological asymmetry of leading and following sunspots has a significant impact on the evolution of the large-scale magnetic field on the solar surface. By evaluating the effect of the morphological asymmetry of each bipolar magnetic region (BMR), we observe that the introduction of the asymmetry in the BMR model significantly reduces its contribution to the polar magnetic field, especially for large and high-latitude BMRs. Strongly asymmetric BMRs can even reverse the regular polar field formation. The surface flux transport simulations based on the observed sunspot record shows that the introduction of the morphological asymmetry reduces the root-mean-square difference from the observed axial dipole strength by 30--40 percent. The reduced speed of sound technique (RSST) has been used for efficient simulation of low Mach number flows in solar and stellar convection zones. The basic RSST equations are hyperbolic, and are suitable for parallel computation by domain decomposition. The application of RSST is limited to cases where density perturbations are much smaller than the background density. In addition, non-conservative variables are required to be evolved using this method, which is not suitable in cases where discontinuities like shock waves co-exist in a single numerical domain. In this study, we suggest a new semi-conservative formulation of the RSST that can be applied to low Mach number flows with large density variations. We derive the wave speed of the original and newly suggested methods to clarify that these methods can reduce the speed of sound without affecting the entropy wave. The equations are implemented using the finite volume method. Several numerical tests are carried out to verify the suggested methods. The analysis and numerical results show that the original RSST is not applicable when mass density variations are large. In contrast, the newly suggested methods are found to be efficient in such cases. We also suggest variants of the RSST that conserve momentum in the machine precision. The newly suggested variants are formulated as semi-conservative equations, which reduce to the conservative form of the Euler equations when the speed of sound is not reduced. This property is advantageous when both high and low Mach number regions are included in the numerical domain. Particles are accelerated to very high, non-thermal energies in solar and space plasma environments. While energy spectra of accelerated electrons often exhibit a power law, it remains unclear how electrons are accelerated to high energies and what processes determine the power-law index $\delta$. Here, we review previous observations of the power-law index $\delta$ in a variety of different plasma environments with a particular focus on sub-relativistic electrons. It appears that in regions more closely related to magnetic reconnection (such as the `above-the-looptop' solar hard X-ray source and the plasma sheet in Earth's magnetotail), the spectra are typically soft ($\delta \gtrsim$ 4). This is in contrast to the typically hard spectra ($\delta \lesssim$ 4) that are observed in coincidence with shocks. The difference implies that shocks are more efficient in producing a larger non-thermal fraction of electron energies when compared to magnetic reconnection. A caveat is that during active times in Earth's magnetotail, $\delta$ values seem spatially uniform in the plasma sheet, while power-law distributions still exist even in quiet times. The role of magnetotail reconnection in the electron power-law formation could therefore be confounded with these background conditions. Because different regions have been studied with different instrumentations and methodologies, we point out a need for more systematic and coordinated studies of power-law distributions for a better understanding of possible scaling laws in particle acceleration as well as their universality., Comment: 67 pages, 15 figures; submitted to Space Science Reviews; comments welcome

Aims. We report the small temporal variation of the axial dipole moment near the solar minimum and its application to the solar cycle prediction by the surface flux transport (SFT) model. Methods. We measure the axial dipole moment using the photospheric synoptic magnetogram observed by the Wilcox Solar Observatory (WSO), the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI), and the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI). We also use the surface flux transport model for the interpretation and prediction of the observed axial dipole moment. Results. We find that the observed axial dipole moment becomes approximately constant during the period of several years before each cycle minimum, which we call the axial dipole moment plateau. The cross-equatorial magnetic flux transport is found to be small during the period, although the significant number of sunspots are still emerging. The results indicates that the newly emerged magnetic flux does not contributes to the build up of the axial dipole moment near the end of each cycle. This is confirmed by showing that the time variation of the observed axial dipole moment agrees well with that predicted by the SFT model without introducing new emergence of magnetic flux. These results allows us to predict the axial dipole moment in Cycle 24/25 minimum using the SFT model without introducing new flux emergence. The predicted axial dipole moment of Cycle 24/25 minimum is 60--80 percent of Cycle 23/24 minimum, which suggests the amplitude of Cycle 25 even weaker than the current Cycle 24. Conclusions. The physical properties and its contribution to the onset of solar flare are still unclear although chromospheric brightening is considered a precursor phenomenon of flare. Many studies suggested that photospheric magnetic field changes cause destabilization of large-scale coronal structure. We aim to understand how a small photospheric change contributes to a flare and to reveal how the intermediary chromosphere behaves in the precursor phase. We analyzed the precursor brightening of the X1.6 flare on 2014 October 22 in the AR 12192 using the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and Hinode/EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) data. We investigated a localized jet with the strong precursor brightening, and compared the intensity, Doppler velocity, and line width in C II, Mg II k, Si IV lines by IRIS and He II, Fe XII, Fe XV lines by Hinode/EIS. We also analyzed photospheric magnetic field and chromospheric/coronal structures using Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) and Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA). We found a significant blueshift (~ 100 km/s), which is related to the strong precursor brightening over a characteristic magnetic field structure, and the blueshift was observed at all the temperature. This might indicate that the flow is accelerated by Lorentz force. Moreover, the large-scale coronal loop that connects the foot-points of the flare ribbons was destabilized just after the precursor brightening with the blueshift. It suggests that magnetic reconnection locally occurred in the lower chromosphere and it triggered magnetic reconnection of the X1.6 flare in the corona., Comment: 21 pages including 2 tables, 9 figures

The origin of the activity in the solar corona is a long-standing problem in solar physics. Recent satellite observations, such as Hinode, Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), show the detail characteristics of the solar atmosphere and try to reveal the energy transfer from the photosphere to the corona through the magnetic fields and its energy conversion by various processes. However, quantitative estimation of energy transfer along the magnetic field is not enough. There are mainly two reason why it is difficult to observe the energy transfer from photosphere to corona; 1) spatial resolution gap between photosphere (a few 0.1 arcsec) and corona (a few arcsec), 2) lack in temperature coverage. Furthermore, there is not enough observational knowledge of the physical parameters in the energy dissipation region. There are mainly three reason why it is difficult to observe in the vicinity of the energy dissipation region; 1) small spatial scale, 2) short time scale, 3) low emission. It is generally believed that the energy dissipation occurs in the very small scale and its duration is very short (10 second). Further, the density in the dissipation region might be very low. Therefore, the high spatial and temporal resolution UV/EUV spectroscopic observation with wide temperature coverage is crucial to estimate the energy transport from photosphere to corona quantitatively and diagnose the plasma dynamics in the vicinity of the energy dissipation region. We have developed a polarized hard X-ray photoemission (HAXPES) system to study the ground-state symmetry of strongly correlated materials. The linear polarization of the incoming X-ray beam is switched by the transmission-type phase retarder composed of two diamond (100) crystals. The best degree of the linear polarization $P_L$ is $-0.96$, containing the vertical polarization component of 98%. A newly developed low temperature two-axis manipulator enables easy polar and azimuthal rotations to select the detection direction of photoelectrons. The lowest temperature achieved is 9 K, offering us a chance to access the ground state even for the strongly correlated electron systems in cubic symmetry. The co-axial sample monitoring system with the long-working-distance microscope enables us to keep measuring the same region on the sample surface before and after rotation procedures. Combining this sample monitoring system with a micro-focused X-ray beam by means of an ellipsoidal Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror (25 $\mu$m $\times$ 25 $\mu$m (FWHM)), we have demonstrated the polarized valence-band HAXPES on NiO for voltage application as resistive random access memories to reveal the origin of the metallic spectral weight near the Fermi level., Comment: to be published in Review of Scientific Instruments

We present a comparison of the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) analysis of NOAA Active Region (AR) 11158 and numerical simulations of flux-tube emergence, aiming to investigate the formation process of this flare-productive AR. First, we use SDO/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) magnetograms to investigate the photospheric evolution and Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) data to analyze the relevant coronal structures. Key features of this quadrupolar region are a long sheared polarity inversion line (PIL) in the central delta-sunspots and a coronal arcade above the PIL. We find that these features are responsible for the production of intense flares, including an X2.2-class event. Based on the observations, we then propose two possible models for the creation of AR 11158 and conduct flux-emergence simulations of the two cases to reproduce this AR. Case 1 is the emergence of a single flux tube, which is split into two in the convection zone and emerges at two locations, while Case 2 is the emergence of two isolated but neighboring tubes. We find that, in Case 1, a sheared PIL and a coronal arcade are created in the middle of the region, which agrees with the AR 11158 observation. However, Case 2 never builds a clear PIL, which deviates from the observation. We present genuine bulk Ir 5d jeff states of layered perovskite iridates obtained by hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) with s- and p-polarized lights. HAXPES spectra of Sr2IrO4 and Ba2IrO4 are well reproduced by the quasi-particle densities of states calculated by the local density approximation with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). It is demonstrated that the insulating nature of the iridates is triggered by antiferromagnetic correlation (Slater type) combined with electron correlation (Mott type). The extremely-low-energy bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy reveals "bad metallic" states in the paramagnetic phase of the iridates, suggesting strongly renormalized metallic states above the Neel temperature as predicted by the LDA+DMFT., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Solar flares are one of the main forces behind space weather events. However the mechanism that drives such energetic phenomena is not fully understood. The standard eruptive flare model predicts that magnetic reconnection occurs high in the corona where hot fast flows are created. Some imaging or spectroscopic observations have indicated the presence of these hot fast flows but there have been no spectroscopic scanning observation to date to measure the two-dimensional structure quantitatively. We analyzed a flare that occurred on the west solar limb on 27 January 2012 observed by the Hinode EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) and found that the hot (~30MK) fast (>500 km/s) component was located above the flare loop. Bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) reveals for as-grown epitaxial films of half-metallic ferromagnetic CrO2(100) a pronounced screening feature in the Cr 2p3/2 core level and an asymmetry in the O 1s core level. This gives evidence of a finite, metal-type Fermi edge, which is surprisingly not observed in HAXPES. A spectral weight shift in HAXPES away from the Fermi energy is attributed to single-ion recoil effects due to high energy photoelectrons. In conjunction with inverse PES the intrinsic correlated Mott-Hubbard-type electronic structure is unravelled, yielding an averaged Coulomb correlation energy Uav ~ 3.2 eV., Comment: Manuscript 12 pages, 4 figures; Supplemental material 7 pages, 5 figures

We have studied the relationship between the velocity and temperature of a solar EUV jet. The highly accelerated jet occurred in the active region NOAA 10960 on 2007 June 5. Multi-wavelength spectral observations with EIS/Hinode allow us to investigate Doppler velocities at the wide temperature range. We analyzed the three-dimensional angle of the jet from the stereoscopic analysis with STEREO. Using this angle and Doppler velocity, we derived the true velocity of the jet. As a result, we found that the cool jet observed with \ion{He}{2} 256 \AA $\log_{10}T_e[\rm{K}] = 4.9$ is accelerated to around $220 \rm{km/s}$ which is over the upper limit of the chromospheric evaporation. The velocities observed with the other lines are under the upper limit of the chromospheric evaporation while most of the velocities of hot lines are higher than that of cool lines. We interpret that the chromospheric evaporation and magnetic acceleration occur simultaneously. We explore the suggestions by Uzdensky (2007) and Cassak et al. (2008) that coronal loops heated by magnetic reconnection should self-organize to a state of marginal collisionality. We discuss their model of coronal loop dynamics with a one-dimensional hydrodynamic calculation. We assume that many current sheets are present, with a distribution of thicknesses, but that only current sheets thinner than the ion skin depth can rapidly reconnect. This assumption naturally causes a density dependent heating rate which is actively regulated by the plasma. We report 9 numerical simulation results of coronal loop hydrodynamics in which the absolute values of the heating rates are different but their density dependences are the same. We find two regimes of behavior, depending on the amplitude of the heating rate. In the case that the amplitude of heating is below a threshold value, the loop is in stable equilibrium. Typically the upper and less dense part of coronal loop is collisionlessly heated and conductively cooled. When the amplitude of heating is above the threshold, the conductive flux to the lower atmosphere required to balance collisionless heating drives an evaporative flow which quenches fast reconnection, ultimately cooling and draining the loop until the cycle begins again. The key elements of this cycle are gravity and the density dependence of the heating function. Some additional factors are present, including pressure driven flows from the loop top, which carry a large enthalpy flux and play an important role in reducing the density. We have studied the effect of time-dependent ionization and recombination processes on magnetic reconnection in the solar corona. Petschek-type steady reconnection, in which model the magnetic energy is mainly converted at the slow-mode shocks, was assumed. We carried out the time-dependent ionization calculation in the magnetic reconnection structure. We only calculated the transient ionization of iron; the other species were assumed to be in ionization equilibrium. The intensity of line emissions at specific wavelengths were also calculated for comparison with {\it Hinode} or other observations in future. What we found is as follows: (1) iron is mostly in non-equilibrium ionization in the reconnection region, (2) the intensity of line emission estimated by the time-dependent ionization calculation is significantly different from that with the ionization equilibrium assumption, (3) the effect of time-dependent ionization is sensitive to the electron density in the case that the electron density is less than $10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$, (4) the effect of thermal conduction lessens the time-dependent ionization effect, (5) the effect of radiative cooling is negligibly small even if we take into account time-dependent ionization., Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We have previously found a temperature-dependent upflow in the dimming region following a coronal mass ejection (CME) observed by the {\it Hinode} EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS). In this paper, we reanalyzed the observations along with previous work on this event, and provided boundary conditions for modeling. We found that the intensity in the dimming region dramatically drops within 30 minutes from the flare onset, and the dimming region reaches the equilibrium stage after $\sim$1 hour later. The temperature-dependent upflows were observed during the equilibrium stage by EIS. The cross sectional area of the fluxtube in the dimming region does not appear to expand significantly. From the observational constraints, we reconstructed the temperature-dependent upflow by using a new method which considers the mass and momentum conservation law, and demonstrated the height variation of plasma conditions in the dimming region. We found that a super radial expansion of the cross sectional area is required to satisfy the mass conservation and momentum equations. There is a steep temperature and velocity gradient of around 7 Mm from the solar surface. This result may suggest that the strong heating occurred above 7 Mm from the solar surface in the dimming region. Coronal plumes, which extend from solar coronal holes (CH) into the high corona and - possibly - into the solar wind (SW), can now continuously be studied with modern telescopes and spectrometers on spacecraft, in addition to investigations from the ground, in particular, during total eclipses. Despite the large amount of data available on these prominent features and related phenomena, many questions remained unanswered as to their generation and relative contributions to the high-speed streams emanating from CHs. An understanding of the processes of plume formation and evolution requires a better knowledge of the physical conditions at the base of CHs, in plumes and in the surrounding inter-plume regions (IPR). More specifically, information is needed on the magnetic field configuration, the electron densities and temperatures, effective ion temperatures, non-thermal motions, plume cross-sections relative to the size of a CH, the plasma bulk speeds, as well as any plume signatures in the SW. In spring 2007, the authors proposed a study on "Structure and dynamics of coronal plumes and inter-plume regions in solar coronal holes" to the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern to clarify some of these aspects by considering relevant observations and the extensive literature. This review summarizes the results and conclusions of the study. Stereoscopic observations allowed us to include three-dimensional reconstructions of plumes. Multi-instrument investigations carried out during several campaigns led to progress in some areas, such as plasma densities, temperatures, plume structure and the relation to other solar phenomena, but not all questions could be answered concerning the details of plume generation process(es) and interaction with the SW., Comment: To appear on: The Astronomy and Astrophysics Review. 72 pages, 30 figures

We have investigated the electronic structures of recently discovered superconductor FeSe by soft-x-ray and hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with high bulk sensitivity. The large Fe 3d spectral weight is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF), which is demonstrated to be a coherent quasi-particle peak. Compared with the results of the band structure calculation with local-density approximation, Fe 3d band narrowing and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting an importance of the electron correlation effect in FeSe. The self energy correction provides the larger mass enhancement value (Z^-1=3.6) than in Fe-As superconductors and enables us to separate a incoherent part from the spectrum. We present EIS/Hinode & SUMER/SoHO joint observations allowing the first spectroscopic detection of accelerating disturbances as recorded with coronal lines in inter-plume and plume regions of a polar coronal hole. From time-distance radiance maps, we detect the presence of propagating disturbances in a polar inter-plume region with a period of 15 to 20 min and a propagation speed increasing from 130+/-14 km/s just above the limb, to 330+/-140 km/s around 160" above the limb. These disturbances can also be traced to originate from a bright region of the on-disk part of the coronal hole where the propagation speed was found to be in the range of 25+/-1.3 to 38+/-4.5 km/s, with the same periodicity. These on-disk bright regions can be visualized as the base of the coronal funnels. The adjacent plume region also shows the presence of propagating disturbance with the same range of period but with propagation speeds in the range of 135+/-18 to 165+/-43 km/s only. To our knowledge, this result provides first spectroscopic evidence of acceleration of propagating disturbances in the polar region close to the Sun (within 1.2 solar radii). We suggest that the waves are likely either Alfv'enic or fast magnetoacoustic in the inter-plume and slow magnetoacoustic in plume regions. This may lead to the conclusion that inter-plumes are preferred channel for the acceleration of the fast solar wind., Comment: Accepted for publication in APJ

We have examined the valence-band electronic structures of gold and silver in the same column in the periodic table with nominally filled d orbitals by means of a recently developed polarization-dependent hard x-ray photoemission. Contrary to a common expectation, it is found that the 5d-orbital electrons contribute prominently to the conduction electrons in gold while the conduction electrons in silver are to some extent free-electron-like with negligible 4d contribution, which could be related to a well-known fact that gold is more stable than silver in air. The 4d electron correlation effects are found to be essential for the conduction electron character in silver., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to be appeared in New J. Phys.

We have performed high-resolution hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy for the metal-insulator transition (MIT) system (V(1-x)Cr(x))2O3 in the paramagnetic metal, paramagnetic insulator and antiferromagentic insulator phases. The quality of the spectra enables us to conclude that the on-site Coulomb energy U does not change through the MIT, which eliminate all but one theoretical MIT scenario in this paradigm material., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

To study the dynamics of coronal holes and the role of waves in the acceleration of the solar wind, spectral observations were performed over polar coronal hole regions with the SUMER spectrometer on SoHO and the EIS spectrometer on Hinode. Using these observations, we aim to detect the presence of propagating waves in the corona and to study their properties. The observations analysed here consist of SUMER spectra of the Ne VIII 770 A line (T = 0.6 MK) and EIS slot images in the Fe XII 195 A line (T = 1.3 MK). Using the wavelet technique, we study line radiance oscillations at different heights from the limb in the polar coronal hole regions. We detect the presence of long period oscillations with periods of 10 to 30 min in polar coronal holes. The oscillations have an amplitude of a few percent in radiance and are not detectable in line-of-sight velocity. From the time distance maps we find evidence for propagating velocities from 75 km/s (Ne VIII) to 125 km/s (Fe XII). These velocities are subsonic and roughly in the same ratio as the respective sound speeds. We interpret the observed propagating oscillations in terms of slow magneto-acoustic waves. We present a multi-wavelength observation of a solar flare occurring on 2006 December 13 with Hinode, RHESSI, and the Nobeyama Radio Observatory, to study the electron acceleration site and mechanism. The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on board Hinode observed elongated flare ribbons, and RHESSI observed double-footpoint hard X-ray (HXR) sources appearing in part of the ribbons. A photospheric vector magnetogram obtained from SOT reveals that the HXR sources are located at the region where horizontal magnetic fields change the direction. The region is interpreted as the footpoint of magnetic separatrix. Microwave images taken with the Nobeyama Radioheliograph show a loop structure connecting the HXR sources. The brighter parts of the microwave intensity are located between the top and footpoints of the loop. We consider these observations as an evidence of the electron acceleration near the magnetic separatrix and injection parallel to the field line., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJ

We have investigated the electronic structures of newly discovered superconductor FeSe1-x by bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The large Fe 3d spectral weight is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF) and it decreases steeply toward EF . Compared with results of band structure calculations, narrowing the Fe 3d band width and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting a mass enhancement due to the weak electron correlation effect. Meanwhile, Fe 2p core-level PES reveals a strong itinerant character of Fe 3d electrons. These features are very similar to those in other Fe-based high-Tc superconductors.

We report on experimental data of the three-dimensional bulk Fermi surfaces of the layered strongly correlated Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 system. The measurements have been performed by means of hn-depndent bulk-sensitive soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission technique. Our experimental data evinces the bulk Fermi surface topology at kz~0 to be qualitatively different from the one observed by surface-sensitive low-energy ARPES. Furthermore, stronger kz dispersion of the circle-like gamma Fermi surface sheet is observed compared with Sr2RuO4. Thus in the paramagnetic metal phase, Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 compound is found to have rather three-dimensional electronic structure., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Soft and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has been performed for one of the heavy fermion system CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and a $4f$-localized ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ in the paramagnetic phase. The three-dimensional band structures and Fermi surface (FS) shapes of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ have been determined by soft X-ray $h\nu$-dependent angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The differences in the Fermi surface topology and the non-$4f$ electronic structures between CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ are qualitatively explained by the band-structure calculation for both $4f$ itinerant and localized models, respectively. The Ce valences in CeRu$_2X_2$ ($X$ = Si, Ge) at 20 K are quantitatively estimated by the single impurity Anderson model calculation, where the Ce 3d hard X-ray core-level PES and Ce 3d X-ray absorption spectra have shown stronger hybridization and signature for the partial $4f$ contribution to the conduction electrons in CeRu$_2$Si$_2$., Comment: 8figures

Three-dimensional Fermi surfaces at a high temperature have been clarified for a strongly correlated Ce compound, ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ in the paramagnetic phase, by virtue of a soft x-ray $h\nu$-dependent (700-860 eV) ARPES. Although the observed Fermi surfaces as well as quasiparticle dispersions are partly explained by a band-structure calculation based on a localized $4f$ model, qualitative discrepancy in experiments, between our APRES in the paramagnetic phase and de Haas-van Alphen measurement in the ferromagnetic phase, is revealed. This suggests a fundamental change in the $4f$ contribution to the Fermi surfaces across the magnetic phase transition widely seen for Ce compounds., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We report on the Cu 1s resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) of Cu-O one-dimensional (1D) strongly correlated insulator systems with contrasting atomic arrangements, namely edge-sharing CuGeO3 and corner-sharing Sr2CuO3. Owing to good statistics of the high-resolution RIXS data, so far unresolved fine structures are revealed. Detailed photon-energy and momentum dependence of the RIXS spectra in comparison with theoretical calculations has clarified the natures of the low-energy charge excitations and hybridization of the electronic states., Comment: 4 pages, 3 color figures

We have performed the bulk-sensitive high-resolution soft x-ray photoemission study of a Kondo semiconductor CeRhAs and related compounds CeNiSn and CePdSn. The comparison of the spectra of polycrystalline CePdSn on the fractured and scraped surfaces shows that the fracturing of the samples is much better than the scraping in order to obtain intrinsic photoemission spectra. Cr 2p core excited XAS and XMCD spectra of ferromagnetic Cr$_{1-\delta}$Te with several concentrations of $\delta$=0.11-0.33 and ferrimagnetic Cr$_{5}$S$_{6}$ have been measured. The observed XMCD lineshapes are found to very weakly depend on $\delta$ for Cr$_{1-\delta}$Te. The experimental results are analyzed by means of a configuration-interaction cluster model calculation with consideration of hybridization and electron correlation effects. The obtained values of the spin magnetic moment by the cluster model analyses are in agreement with the results of the band structure calculation.The calculated result shows that the doped holes created by the Cr deficiency exist mainly in the Te 5porbital of Cr$_{1-\delta}$Te, whereas the holes are likely to be in Cr 3d state for Cr$_{5}$S$_{6}$., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review B

We report the Fermi surfaces of the superconductor Sr2RuO4 and the non-superconductor Sr1.8Ca0.2RuO4 probed by bulk-sensitive high-energy angle-resolved photoemission. It is found that there is one square-shaped hole-like, one square-shaped electron-like and one circle-shaped electron-like Fermi surface in both compounds. These results provide direct evidence for nesting instability giving rise to magnetic fluctuations. Unusual temperature and doping dependence of the Mn 3d spectral functions of manganese perovskites Nd1-xSrxMnO3 has been revealed by the high-resolution Mn 2p-3d resonance photoemission. The temperature-dependent spectra cannot be explained by any theoretical model currently under debate, while showing evidence for a microscopic and dynamic phase segregation. The experimental results strongly suggest that the competition of both the dynamical and static Jahn-Teller effects with ferromagnetic ordering at high and low temperatures, respectively, is responsible for the actual electronic states., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We report high-resolution high-energy photoemission spectra together with parameter-free LDA+DMFT (local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory) results for Sr1-xCaxVO3, a prototype 3d1 system. In contrast to earlier investigations the bulk spectra are found to be insensitive to x. The bulk-sensitive Ce 4$f$ spectral weights of various Ce compounds including CeFe$_2$, CeNi$_2$, and CeSi$_2$ were obtained with the resonant photoemission technique at the Ce 3d-edge. We found the lineshapes change significantly with the small change of the incident photon energy. Detailed analysis showed that this phenomenon results primarily from the Auger transition between different multiplet states of the Ce $\underline{3d_{5/2}}4f^2$ (bar denotes a hole) electronic configuration in the intermediate state of the resonant process. This tells us that extra care should be taken for the choice of the resonant photon energy when extracting Ce 4$f$ spectral weights from the Ce 3$d$-edge resonant photoemission spectra. The absorption energy corresponding to the lowest multiplet structure of the Ce $\underline{3d_{5/2}}4f^2$ configuration seems to be the logical choice., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. We have measured Ce 4f spectral weights of extremely $\alpha$-like Ce-transition metal intermetallic compounds CeRh$_x$ (x=2,3) and CeNi$_x$ (x=2,5) by using the {\it bulk-sensitive} resonant photoemission technique at the Ce $M_5$($3d_{5/2}\to4f$)-edge. Unprecedentedly high energy resolution and longer escape depth of photoemitted electron at this photon energy enabled us to distinguish the sharp Kondo resonance tails at the Fermi level, which can be well described by the Gunnarsson-Sch\"onhammer(GS) calculation based on the Anderson Impurity Hamiltonian. On the other hand, the itinerant 4f band description shows big discrepancies, which implies that Ce 4f electrons retain localized characters even in extremely $\alpha$-like compounds., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Mn 2p soft X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy excited with circularly polarized synchrotron radiation has been applied to a new class of material, c(2x2)CuMn/Cu(001) two-dimensional ordered surface alloy. A significant X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) signal has been clearly observed at T=25K, indicating the existence of the ferromagnetic state under the external magnetic field of 1.4 Tesla. The lineshape analyses of the XAS and XMCD spectra clearly show that the Mn 3d state is rather localized and has a high spin magnetic moment due to its half-filled character., Comment: REVTeX, 3pages, 3figures. We have carried out a bulk-sensitive high-resolution photoemission experiment on Mn5Si3. The measurements are performed for both core level and valence band states. The Mn core level spectra are deconvoluted into two components corresponding to different crystallographic sites. The asymmetry of each component is of noticeable magnitude. In contrast, the Si 2p spectrum shows a simple Lorentzian shape with low asymmetry. The peaks of the valence band spectrum correspond well to the peak positions predicted by the former band calculation., Comment: To be published in: Solid State Communications

Pr 4f electronic states in Pr-based filled skutterudites PrT4X12(T=Fe and Ru; X=P and Sb) have been studied by high-resolution bulk-sensitive Pr 3d-4f resonance photoemission. A very strong spectral intensity is observed just below the Fermi level in the heavy-fermion system PrFe4P12. The increase of its intensity at lower temperatures is observed. Temperature variations of the spectral shapes between 20 and 250 K are obviously observed for the Re 4f inner core and the valence band spectra. Bulk-sensitive high-resolution photoemission was carried out on a prototype 3d1 metallic Sr1-xCaxVO3. In a strong contrast to so far reported results, the bulk spectral functions are revealed to be insensitive to x. The conservation of the density of states at the Fermi level in spite of the electron correlation is clarified by the successful suppression and deconvolution of the surface contribution.
