Amino acids are building-blocks of proteins, basic constituents of all organisms and essential to life on Earth. They are present in carbonaceous chondrite meteorites and comets, but their origin is still unknown. We present Spitzer spectroscopic observations in the star-forming region IC 348 of the Perseus Molecular Cloud showing the possible detections of mid-IR emission lines consistent with the most intense laboratory bands of the three aromatic amino acids, tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan and the aliphatic amino acids isoleucine and glycine. Based on these tentative identifications, preliminary estimates of column densities give values 10-100 times higher for isoleucine and glycine than for the aromatic amino acids as in some meteorites. Potential counterparts of the strongest laboratory bands of each amino acid are also found in the combined spectrum of 32 interstellar locations obtained in diverse unrelated star-forming regions., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. We present Spitzer 10-34 {\mu}m spectroscopic observations of the diffuse gas in the inner region of the star-forming region IC 348 of the Perseus Molecular Cloud. We find evidence for the strongest mid-IR bands of common molecules as H\textsubscript{2}, OH, H\textsubscript{2}O,CO\textsubscript{2} and NH\textsubscript{3} and of several carbonaceous molecules which may play an important role in the production of more complex hydrocarbons: HCN, C\textsubscript{2}H\textsubscript{2}, C\textsubscript{4}H\textsubscript{2}, HC\textsubscript{3}N, HC\textsubscript{5}N, C\textsubscript{2}H\textsubscript{6}, C\textsubscript{6}H\textsubscript{2}, C\textsubscript{6}H\textsubscript{6}. The excitation diagram of H\textsubscript{2} reveals the presence of warm gas (270 +- 30 K) at the observed locations. Assuming this temperature, the derived abundances of CO\textsubscript{2} and NH\textsubscript{3} relative to H\textsubscript{2} are 10\textsuperscript{-8} and 10\textsuperscript{-7}, respectively. From the water lines we obtain an abundance of order 10\textsuperscript{-6} and higher gas temperatures. The abundances derived for HCN and C\textsubscript{2}H\textsubscript{2}, key molecules in the development of prebiotic building blocks, are of order 10\textsuperscript{-7} and 10\textsuperscript{-9}, respectively. More complex molecules such as PAHs and the fullerenes C\textsubscript{60} and C\textsubscript{70} are also present. IC 348 appears to be very rich and diverse in molecular content. Based on observations with the IRAM 30-m and Yebes 40-m telescopes, we report evidence of the detection of Milky Way-like, low-excitation molecular gas, up to the transition CO($J=5-4$), in a distant, dusty star-forming galaxy at $z_{CO}=1.60454$. WISE J122651.0+214958.8 (alias SDSSJ1226, the Cosmic Seahorse), is strongly lensed by a foreground galaxy cluster at $z=0.44$ with a source magnification of $\mu=9.5\pm0.7$. This galaxy was selected by cross-correlating near-to-mid infrared colours within the full-sky AllWISE survey, originally aiming to discover rare analogs of the archetypical strongly lensed submillimeter galaxy SMM J2135-0102, the Cosmic Eyelash. We derive an apparent (i.e. not corrected for lensing magnification) rest-frame 8-1000 $\mu$m infrared luminosity of $\mu L_\mathrm{IR}=1.66^{+0.04}_{-0.04}\times 10^{13}$ L$_\odot$ and apparent star-formation rate $\mu\mathrm{SFR}_\mathrm{IR}=2960\pm70$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. SDSSJ1226 is ultra-bright at $S_{350\mu m}\simeq170$ mJy and shows similarly bright low-$J$ CO line intensities as SMM J2135-0102, however, with exceptionally small CO($J=5-4$) intensity. We consider different scenarios to reconcile our observations with typical findings of high-$z$ starbursts, and speculate about the presence of a previously unseen star-formation mechanism in cosmic noon submillimeter galaxies. In conclusion, the remarkable low line luminosity ratio $r_{5,2}=0.11\pm0.02$ is best explained by an extended, main-sequence star-formation mode -- representing a missing link between starbursts to low-luminosity systems during the epoch of peak star-formation history., Comment: 12 pages incl. one appendix, 5 figures, 2 tables. Formation of amino acids in the interstellar medium is posible via specific gas-phase reactions in dark clouds, however sensitive radiosearches at millimeter wavelengths have not revealed their existence yet. The mid-IR vibrational spectra of amino acids provides an alternative path for their identification. We present Spitzer spectroscopic observations in the star-forming region IC 348 of the Perseus Molecular Cloud showing the detection of mid-IR emission lines consistent with the most intense laboratory bands of the three aromatic amino acids, tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan and the aliphatic amino acids isoleucine and glycine. Estimates of column densities give values 10-100 times higher for isoleucine and glycine than for the aromatic amino acids as in some meteorites. The strongest bands of each amino acid are also found in the combined spectrum of >30 interstellar locations in diverse star-forming regions supporting the suggestion that amino acids are widely spread in interstellar space. We have obtained high resolution optical spectroscopy of 10 reddened O-type stars with UVES at VLT to search for interstellar bands of the naphthalene cation (C$_{10}$H$_{8}$$^+$) in the intervening clouds. No absorption features were detected near the laboratory strongest band of this cation at 6707 \AA except for star HD 125241 (O9 I). Additional bands in the optical spectrum of this star appear to be consistent with other transitions of this cation. Under the assumption that the bands are caused by naphthalene cations we derive a column density N$_{Np^+}$ = (1.2$\pm$ 0.3) x 10 $^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ similar to the column density claimed in the Perseus complex star Cernis 52 (Iglesias-Groth et al. 2008). The strength ratio of the two prominent diffuse interstellar bands at 5780 and 5797 \AA suggests the presence of a $\sigma$-type cloud in the line of sight of HD 125241., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Interstellar absorption lines up to J"=10 in the (2,0) band and up to J"=6 in the (3,0) band of the C$_2$ $A^1\Pi_u$ - $X^1\Sigma^+_g$ system are detected toward star Cernis 52 (BD+31$^o$ 640) in the Perseus molecular complex. The star lies in a redenned line of sight where various experiments have detected anomalous microwave emission spatially correlated with dust thermal emission. The inferred total C$_2$ column density of N(C$_{2}$) = (10.5$\pm$ 0.2) x 10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ is well correlated with that of CH as expected from theoretical models and is among the highest reported on translucent clouds with similar extinction. The observed rotational C$_2$ lines constrain the gas-kinetic temperature T and the density n=n(H)+n(H$_2$) of the intervening cloud to T = 40$\pm$10 K and n = 250 $\pm$ 50 cm$^{-3}$, respectively. Amino acids in solar system bodies may have played a key role in the chemistry that led to the origin of life on Earth. We present laboratory studies testing the stability of amino acids against gamma radiation photolysis. All the 20 chiral amino acids in the levo form used in the proteins of the current terrestrial biochemistry have been irradiated in the solid state with gamma radiation to a dose of 3.2 MGy which is the dose equivalent to that derived by radionuclide decay in comets and asteroids in 1.05x109 years. For each amino acid the radiolysis degree and the radioracemization degree was measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and by optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) spectroscopy. From these measurements a radiolysis rate constant kdsc and a radioracemization rate constant krac have been determined for each amino acid and extrapolated to a dose of 14 MGy which corresponds to the expected total dose delivered by the natural radionuclides decay to all the organic molecules present in comets and asteroids in 4.6x109 years, the age of the Solar System. It is shown that all the amino acids studied can survive a radiation dose of 14 MGy in significant quantity although part of them are lost in radiolytic processes. Similarly, also the radioracemization process accompanying the radiolysis does not extinguish the chirality. The knowledge of the radiolysis and radioracemization rate constants may permit the calculation of the original concentration of the amino acids at the times of the formation of the Solar System starting from the concentration found today in carbonaceous chondrites. We study the rotation rates and electric dipole emission of hydrogenated icosahedral fullerenes (single and multishell) in various phases of the interstellar medium. Using the formalism of Draine and Lazarian for the rotational dynamics of these molecules in various astrophysical environments, we find effective rotation rates in the range 1-65 GHz with a trend toward lower rotational frequency as the radius of the molecule increases. Owing to the moderately polar nature of the C--H bond, hydrogenated fullerenes (fulleranes) are expected to have a net dipole moment and produce electric dipole radiation. Adopting the same size distribution proposed for fullerenes in the study of the UV extinction bump (2175 \AA) we predict the dipole electric emission of mixtures of fulleranes for various levels of hydrogenation. We find that these molecules could be the carriers of the anomalous microwave emission recently detected by Watson et al. in the Perseus molecular complex., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted in ApJL
