Neutron spectroscopy is used to probe transverse acoustic phonons near the (2, 2, 0) Bragg position in colossal magnetoresistive La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3. Upon warming to temperatures near Tc = 257 K the phonon peaks in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 soften and damp significantly with the phonon half width at half maximum approaching 2.5 meV for phonons at a reduced wave vector of q = (0.2, 0.2, 0). Concurrently a quasielastic component develops that dominates the spectrum near the polaron position at high temperatures. This quasielastic scattering is ~5 times more intense near Tc than in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 despite comparable structural distortions in the two. The damping becomes more significant near the polaron position with a temperature dependence similar to that of polaron structural distortions. An applied magnetic field of 9.5 T only partially reverses the damping and quasielastic component, despite smaller fields being sufficient to drive the colossal magnetoresistive effect. The phonon energy, on the other hand, is unaffected by field. The damping in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 near Tc at a reduced wave vector of q = (0.25, 0.25, 0) is significantly smaller but displays a similar trend with an applied magnetic field., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

While the spin dynamics of La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ in the ferromagnetic phase are known to be unconventional, previous measurements have yielded contradictory results regarding the damping of spin wave excitations. Neutron spectroscopy measurements on a sample with a transition temperature of $T_c$=257 K, higher than most single crystals, unambiguously reveal an anomalous increase in spin wave damping for excitations approaching the Brillouin zone boundary along the [$100$] direction that cannot be explained as an artifact due to a noninteracting phonon branch. Spin waves throughout the ($HK0$) plane display a common trend where the spin wave damping is dependent upon the excitation energy, increasing for energies above roughly 15 meV and reaching a full width at half maximum of at least 20 meV. The results are consistent with a model of intrinsic spatial inhomogeneity with phase separated regions approximately 18 {\AA} in size persisting over a large range of temperatures below $T_c$., Comment: v2: 8 pages, 7 figures v1: 7 pages, 7 figures

Low energy inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals of the kagome spin liquid compound ZnCu3(OD)6Cl2 (Herbertsmithite) reveals antiferromagnetic correlations between impurity spins for energy transfers E < 0.8 meV (~J/20). The momentum dependence differs significantly from higher energy scattering which arises from the intrinsic kagome spins. The low energy fluctuations are characterized by diffuse scattering near wavevectors (1 0 0) and (0 0 3/2), which is consistent with antiferromagnetic correlations between pairs of nearest neighbor Cu impurities on adjacent triangular (Zn) interlayers. The corresponding impurity lattice resembles a simple cubic lattice in the dilute limit below the percolation threshold. Such an impurity model can describe prior neutron, NMR, and specific heat data. The low energy neutron data are consistent with the presence of a small spin-gap (Delta ~ 0.7 meV) in the kagome layers, similar to that recently observed by NMR. The ability to distinguish the scattering due to Cu impurities from that of the planar kagome Cu spins provides a new avenue for probing intrinsic spin liquid physics.

Neutron spectroscopy measurements reveal short-range spin correlations near and above the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition in manganite materials of the form La$_{1-x}A_{x}$MnO$_{3}$, including samples with an insulating ground state as well as colossal magnetoresistive samples with a metallic ground state. Quasielastic magnetic scattering is revealed that forms clear ridges running along the [100]-type directions in momentum space. A simple model consisting of a conduction electron hopping between spin polarized Mn ions that becomes self-trapped after a few hops captures the essential physics of this magnetic component of the scattering. We associate this scattering component with the magnetic part of diffuse polarons, as we observe a temperature dependence similar to that of the diffuse structural scattering arising from individual polarons., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

New physics can emerge in magnetic materials where quantum fluctuations are enhanced due to reduced dimensionality and strong frustration. One long sought example is the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state, where atomic magnetic moments are strongly correlated but do not order or freeze even in the limit of T -> 0. The RVB ground state does not break conventional symmetries, such as lattice translation or spin-rotation. The realization of such a quantum spin liquid in two-dimensions would represent a new state of matter. It is believed that spin liquid physics plays a role in the phenomenon of high-Tc superconductivity, and the topological properties of the spin liquid state may have applications in the field of quantum information. We present neutron scattering measurements of the spin excitations on single crystal samples of the spin-1/2 kagom\'{e} lattice antiferromagnet ZnCu3(OD)6Cl2 (also called herbertsmithite). Our observation of a spinon continuum in a two-dimensional magnet is remarkable first. The results serve as a key fingerprint of the quantum spin liquid state in herbertsmithite., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

Neutron spectroscopy measurements reveal dynamic spin correlations throughout the Brillouin zone in the colossal magnetoresistive material La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 at 265 K (approximately 1.03 Tc). The long-wavelength behavior is consistent with spin diffusion, yet an additional and unexpected component of the scattering is also observed in low-energy constant-E measurements, which takes the form of ridges of strong quasielastic scattering running along (H 0 0) and equivalent directions. Well-defined Q-space correlations are observed in constant-E scans at energies up to at least 28 meV, suggesting robust short-range spin correlations in the paramagnetic phase., Comment: v2: 5 pages, 5 figures. Single crystal neutron diffraction studies have been performed on the S = 3/2 kagome staircase compound Co3V2O8 with a magnetic field applied along the magnetization easy-axis (H || a). Previous zero field measurements [Y. Chen, et al., Phys. Rev. B 74, 014430 (2006)] reported a rich variety of magnetic phases, with a ferromagnetic ground state as well as incommensurate, transversely polarized spin density wave (SDW) phases (with a propagation vector of k = (0 delta 0)) interspersed with multiple commensurate lock-in transitions. The magnetic phase diagram with H || a adds further complexity. For small applied fields, H = 0.05 T, the commensurate lock-in phases are destabilized in favor of the incommensurate SDW, while slightly larger applied fields restore the commensurate lock-in phase with delta = 1/2 and yield a new commensurate phase with delta = 2/5. Hexagonal Dy(0.5)Y(0.5)MnO3, a multiferroic rare-earth manganite with geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetism, has been investigated with single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. Below 3.4 K magnetic order is observed on both the Mn (antiferromagnetic) and Dy (ferrimagnetic) sublattices that is identical to that of undiluted hexagonal DyMnO3 at low temperature. The Mn moments undergo a spin reorientation transition between 3.4 K and 10 K, with antiferromagnetic order of the Mn sublattice persisting up to 70 K; the antiferromagnetic order in this phase is distinct from that observed in undiluted (h)DyMnO3, yielding a qualitatively new phase diagram not seen in other hexagonal rare-earth manganites. The Zn-paratacamite family, Zn$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ for $x \, \geq$ 0.33, is an ideal system for studying spin-1/2 frustrated magnetism in the form of antiferromagnetic Cu$^{2+}$ kagome planes. Here we report a new synthesis method by which high quality millimeter-sized single crystals of Zn-paratacamite have been produced. These crystals have been characterized by metal analysis, x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and thermodynamic measurements. The $x$ = 1 member of the series displays a magnetic susceptibility that is slightly anisotropic at high temperatures with $\chi_{c} \, > \, \chi_{ab}$. Neutron and synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments confirm the quality of these $x$ = 1 single crystals and indicate no obvious structural transition down to temperatures of T=2 K., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted by PRB rapid communication

We study the thermodynamic properties of the clinoatacamite compound, Cu_2(OH)_3Cl, by considering several approximate models. They include the Heisenberg model on (i) the uniform pyrochlore lattice, (ii) a very anisotropic pyrochlore lattice, and (iii) a kagome lattice weakly coupled to spins that sit on a triangular lattice. We utilize the exact diagonalization of small clusters with periodic boundary conditions and implement a numerical linked-cluster expansion approach for quantum lattice models with reduced symmetries, which allows us to solve model (iii) in the thermodynamic limit. We find a very good agreement between the experimental uniform susceptibility and the numerical results for models (ii) and (iii), which suggests a weak ferromagnetic coupling between the kagome and triangular layers in clinoatacamite. We also study thermodynamic properties in a geometrical transition between a planar pyrochlore lattice and the kagome lattice., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Using muon spin resonance we examine the organometallic hybrid compound Cu(1,3-benzenedicarboxylate) [Cu(1,3-bdc)], which has structurally perfect spin 1/2 copper kagome planes separated by pure organic linkers. This compound has antiferromagnetic interactions with Curie-Weiss temperature of -33 K. We found slowing down of spin fluctuations starting at T=1.8 K, and that the state at T->0 is quasi-static with no long-range order and extremely slow spin fluctuations at a rate of 3.6 1/usec. This indicates that Cu(1,3-bdc) behaves as expected from a kagome magnet and could serve as a model kagome compound., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures. accepted for publication as a Brief Report in Physical Review B
