Search

Hypothetical axions provide a compelling explanation for dark matter and could be emitted from the hot solar interior. The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) has been searching for solar axions via their back conversion to X-ray photons in a 9-T 10-m long magnet directed towards the Sun. We report on an extended run with the IAXO (International Axion Observatory) pathfinder detector, doubling the previous exposure time. The detector was operated with a xenon-based gas mixture for part of the new run, providing technical insights for future detector configurations in IAXO. No counts are detected in the 95% signal-encircling region during the new run, while 0.75 are expected. The new data improve the axion-photon coupling limit to 5.8$\times 10^{-11}\,$GeV$^{-1}$ at 95% C.L. It has been previously advocated that the presence of the daily and annual modulations of the axion flux on the Earth's surface may dramatically change the strategy of the axion searches. The arguments were based on the so-called Axion Quark Nugget (AQN) dark matter model which was originally put forward to explain the similarity of the dark and visible cosmological matter densities $\Omega_{\rm dark}\sim \Omega_{\rm visible}$. In this framework, the population of galactic axions with mass $ 10^{-6} {\rm eV}\lesssim m_a\lesssim 10^{-3}{\rm eV}$ and velocity $\langle v_a\rangle\sim 10^{-3} c$ will be accompanied by axions with typical velocities $\langle v_a\rangle\sim 0.6 c$ emitted by AQNs. Furthermore, in this framework, it has also been argued that the AQN-induced axion daily modulation (in contrast with the conventional WIMP paradigm) could be as large as $(10-20)\%$, which represents the main motivation for the present investigation. We argue that the daily modulations along with the broadband detection strategy can be very useful tools for the discovery of such relativistic axions. The data from the CAST-CAPP detector have been used following such arguments. Unfortunately, due to the dependence of the amplifier chain on temperature-dependent gain drifts and other factors, we could not conclusively show the presence or absence of a dark sector-originated daily modulation. The branching ratio of the structure dependent (SD) radiative $K^{+} \to e^{+} \nu_{e} \gamma$ decay relative to that of the $K^+\rightarrow e^+ \nu_{e} (\gamma)$ decay including the internal bremsstrahlung (IB) process ($K_{e2(\gamma)}$) has been measured in the J-PARC E36 experiment using plastic scintillator/lead sandwich detectors. In the analysis, the effect of IB was also taken into account in the SD radiative decay as $K_{e2\gamma(\gamma)}^{\rm SD}$. By combining the new data with the previously reported result of the E36 experiment using a CsI(Tl) calorimeter after revision for the IB correction for $K_{e2\gamma(\gamma)}^{\rm SD}$, a new value $Br(K_{e2\gamma(\gamma)}^{\rm SD})/Br(K_{e2(\gamma)})=1.20\pm0.07$ has been determined, which is consistent with a recent lattice QCD calculation, but larger than the expectation of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) at order $O(p^4)$ and the previous KLOE value. Also, using the method to relate form factor and branching ratio described in the KLOE paper, the present result is consistent with the form factor prediction based on a gauged nonlocal chiral quark model, but larger than ChPT at order $O(p^6)$., Comment: 19 pages

The CAST-CAPP axion haloscope, operating at CERN inside the CAST dipole magnet, has searched for axions in the 19.74 $\mu$eV to 22.47 $\mu$eV mass range. The detection concept follows the Sikivie haloscope principle, where Dark Matter axions convert into photons within a resonator immersed in a magnetic field. The CAST-CAPP resonator is an array of four individual rectangular cavities inserted in a strong dipole magnet, phase-matched to maximize the detection sensitivity. Here we report on the data acquired for 4124 h from 2019 to 2021. Each cavity is equipped with a fast frequency tuning mechanism of 10 MHz/min between 4.774 GHz and 5.434 GHz. In the present work, we exclude axion-photon couplings for virialized galactic axions down to $g_{a{\gamma}{\gamma}} = 8 \times {10^{-14}}$ $GeV^{-1}$ at the 90% confidence level. The search for a dark photon holds considerable interest in the physics community. Such a force carrier would begin to illuminate the dark sector. Many experiments have searched for such a particle, but so far it has proven elusive. In recent years the concept of a low mass dark photon has gained popularity in the physics community. Of particular recent interest is the $^8$Be and $^4$He anomaly, which could be explained by a new fifth force carrier with a mass of 17 MeV/$c^2$. The proposed DarkLight experiment would search for this potential low mass force carrier at ARIEL in the 10-20 MeV e$^+$e$^-$ invariant mass range. The structure dependent radiative $K^+ \rightarrow e^+ \nu \gamma$ ($K_{e2\gamma}^{\rm SD^+}$) decay was investigated with stopped positive kaons. The $e^+$ momentum spectra containing 574$\pm$30 $K_{e2\gamma}^{\rm SD^+}$ events with a $K^+ \rightarrow \mu^+ \nu$ ($K_{\mu2}$) background of 28$\pm$19 events were measured with and without a photon in coincidence and analyzed with Monte Carlo simulations for acceptance and detector response to extract the ratio of the branching ratio of the $K_{e2\gamma}^{\rm SD^+}$ decay and the $K^+ \rightarrow e^+ \nu$ decay including the internal bremsstrahlung process ($K_{e2(\gamma)}$). A value of $Br(K_{e2\gamma}^{\rm SD^+}) / Br(K_{e2(\gamma)}) = 1.12\pm0.07_{\rm stat} \pm 0.04_{\rm syst}$ was obtained. This indicates a partial branching ratio, $Br(K_{e2\gamma}^{\rm SD^+}, ~{p_e>200~{\rm MeV}/c}, ~{E_\gamma>10~{\rm MeV}})/Br(K_{\mu2}) =(1.85 \pm 0.11_{\rm{stat}} \pm 0.07_{\rm{syst}}) \times10^{-5}$, which is $25\%(\sim$2.5$\sigma)$ higher than the previous experimental result., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

We present results of the Relic Axion Dark-Matter Exploratory Setup (RADES), a detector which is part of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST), searching for axion dark matter in the 34.67$\mu$eV mass range. A radio frequency cavity consisting of 5 sub-cavities coupled by inductive irises took physics data inside the CAST dipole magnet for the first time using this filter-like haloscope geometry. An exclusion limit with a 95% credibility level on the axion-photon coupling constant of g$_{a\gamma}\gtrsim 4\times10^{-13} \text{GeV}^{-1}$ over a mass range of 34.6738 $\mu$eV < $m_a$ < 34.6771 $\mu$eV is set. This constitutes a significant improvement over the current strongest limit set by CAST at this mass and is at the same time one of the most sensitive direct searches for an axion dark matter candidate above the mass of 25 $\mu$eV. We report on a first measurement with a sensitive opto-mechanical force sensor designed for the direct detection of coupling of real chameleons to matter. These dark energy candidates could be produced in the Sun and stream unimpeded to Earth. The KWISP detector installed on the CAST axion search experiment at CERN looks for tiny displacements of a thin membrane caused by the mechanical effect of solar chameleons. The displacements are detected by a Michelson interferometer with a homodyne readout scheme. The sensor benefits from the focusing action of the ABRIXAS X-ray telescope installed at CAST, which increases the chameleon flux on the membrane. A mechanical chopper placed between the telescope output and the detector modulates the incoming chameleon stream. We present the results of the solar chameleon measurements taken at CAST in July 2017, setting an upper bound on the force acting on the membrane of $80$~pN at 95\% confidence level. The detector is sensitive for direct coupling to matter $10^4 \leq\beta_m \leq 10^8$, where the coupling to photons is locally bound to $\beta_\gamma \leq 10^{11}$., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

We report on a new search for solar chameleons with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). A GridPix detector was used to search for soft X-ray photons in the energy range from 200 eV to 10 keV from converted solar chameleons. No signiffcant excess over the expected background has been observed in the data taken in 2014 and 2015. We set an improved limit on the chameleon photon coupling, $\beta_\gamma < 5.7\times10^{10}$ for $1<\beta_\mathrm{m}<10^6$ at 95% C.L. improving our previous results by a factor two and for the first time reaching sensitivity below the solar luminosity bound for tachocline magnetic fields up to $12.5\,\mathrm{T}$., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables

During 2003--2015, the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) has searched for $a\to\gamma$ conversion in the 9 T magnetic field of a refurbished LHC test magnet that can be directed toward the Sun. In its final phase of solar axion searches (2013--2015), CAST has returned to evacuated magnet pipes, which is optimal for small axion masses. The absence of a significant signal above background provides a world leading limit of $g_{a\gamma} < 0.66 \times 10^{-10} {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ (95% C.L.) on the axion-photon coupling strength for $m_a \lesssim 0.02$ eV. Compared with the first vacuum phase (2003--2004), the sensitivity was vastly increased with low-background x-ray detectors and a new x-ray telescope. A spiral fiber tracker (SFT) has been designed and produced for the J-PARC E36 experiment as an element of the tracking system for conducting a high-resolution momentum measurement of charge particles from kaon decays. A novel technique to wind the pre-made fiber ribbons spirally was employed for the configuration with four detector layers made of 1 mm diameter plastic scintillating fibers. Good position alignment and sufficiently high detection efficiency for charged particles with minimum ionizing energy were confirmed in cosmic ray test. In this work we present a search for (solar) chameleons with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). This novel experimental technique, in the field of dark energy research, exploits both the chameleon coupling to matter ($\beta_{\rm m}$) and to photons ($\beta_{\gamma}$) via the Primakoff effect. By reducing the X-ray detection energy threshold used for axions from 1$\,$keV to 400$\,$eV CAST became sensitive to the converted solar chameleon spectrum which peaks around 600$\,$eV. Even though we have not observed any excess above background, we can provide a 95% C.L. limit for the coupling strength of chameleons to photons of $\beta_{\gamma}\!\lesssim\!10^{11}$ for $1<\beta_{\rm m}<10^6$., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) searches for $a\to\gamma$ conversion in the 9 T magnetic field of a refurbished LHC test magnet that can be directed toward the Sun. Two parallel magnet bores can be filled with helium of adjustable pressure to match the X-ray refractive mass $m_\gamma$ to the axion search mass $m_a$. After the vacuum phase (2003--2004), which is optimal for $m_a\lesssim0.02$ eV, we used $^4$He in 2005--2007 to cover the mass range of 0.02--0.39 eV and $^3$He in 2009--2011 to scan from 0.39--1.17 eV. After improving the detectors and shielding, we returned to $^4$He in 2012 to investigate a narrow $m_a$ range around 0.2 eV ("candidate setting" of our earlier search) and 0.39--0.42 eV, the upper axion mass range reachable with $^4$He, to "cross the axion line" for the KSVZ model. We have improved the limit on the axion-photon coupling to $g_{a\gamma}< 1.47\times10^{-10} {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ (95% C.L.), depending on the pressure settings. Lepton family number violation is tested by searching for $\mu^+\to e^+X^0$ decays among the 5.8$\times 10^8$ positive muon decay events analyzed by the TWIST collaboration. Limits are set on the production of both massless and massive $X^0$ bosons. The large angular acceptance of this experiment allows limits to be placed on anisotropic $\mu^+\to e^+X^0$ decays, which can arise from interactions violating both lepton flavor and parity conservation. Branching ratio limits of order $10^{-5}$ are obtained for bosons with masses of 13 - 80 MeV/c$^2$ and with different decay asymmetries. For bosons with masses less than 13 MeV/c$^{2}$ the asymmetry dependence is much stronger and the 90% limit on the branching ratio varies up to $5.8 \times 10^{-5}$. The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) has finished its search for solar axions with 3^He buffer gas, covering the search range 0.64 eV < m_a <1.17 eV. This closes the gap to the cosmological hot dark matter limit and actually overlaps with it. From the absence of excess X-rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of g_ag < 3.3 x 10^{-10} GeV^{-1} at 95% CL, with the exact value depending on the pressure setting. The status of the solar axion search with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) will be presented. Recent results obtained by the use of $^3$He as a buffer gas has allowed us to extend our sensitivity to higher axion masses than our previous measurements with $^4$He. With about 1 h of data taking at each of 252 different pressure settings we have scanned the axion mass range 0.39 eV$ \le m_{a} \le $ 0.64 eV. From the absence of an excess of x rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of g$_{a\gamma} \le 2.3\times 10^{-10}$ GeV$^{-1}$ at 95% C.L., the exact value depending on the pressure setting. CAST published results represent the best experimental limit on the photon couplings to axions and other similar exotic particles dubbed WISPs (Weakly Interacting Slim Particles) in the considered mass range and for the first time the limit enters the region favored by QCD axion models. Preliminary sensitivities for axion masses up to 1.16 eV will also be shown reaching mean upper limits on the axion-photon coupling of g$_{a\gamma} \le 3.5\times 10^{-10}$ GeV$^{-1}$ at 95% C.L. The TWIST Collaboration has completed its measurement of the three muon decay parameters \rho, \delta, and P_\mu\xi. This paper describes our determination of \rho, which governs the shape of the overall momentum spectrum, and \delta, which controls the momentum dependence of the parity-violating decay asymmetry. The results are \rho=0.74977\pm 0.00012(stat.)\pm 0.00023(syst.) and \delta = 0.75049\pm 0.00021(stat.)\pm 0.00027(syst.). These are consistent with the value of 3/4 given for both parameters in the standard model, and each is over a factor of 10 more precise than the measurements published prior to TWIST. Our final results on \rho, \delta, and P_\mu\xi have been incorporated into a new global analysis of all available muon decay data, resulting in improved model-independent constraints on the possible weak interactions of right-handed particles., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

At T=1.8 K this allows for larger pressure settings and hence sensitivity to higher axion masses than our previous measurements with 4He. We present a new high precision measurement of parity violation in the weak interaction, using polarized muon decay. The TWIST collaboration has measured $P_\mu^\pi \xi$, where $P_\mu^\pi$ is the polarization of the muon in pion decay and $\xi$ describes the intrinsic asymmetry in muon decay. We find $P_\mu^\pi \xi = 1.00084 \pm 0.00029\,(\textrm{stat.})_{-0.00063}^{+0.00165}\,(\textrm{syst.})$, in good agreement with the standard model prediction of $P_\mu^\pi=\xi=1$. Our result is a factor of 7 more precise than the pre-TWIST value, setting new limits in left-right symmetric electroweak extensions to the standard model., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, published in Phys. The time dependence of muon spin relaxation has been measured in high purity aluminum and silver samples in a longitudinal 2 T magnetic field at room temperature, using time-differential \musr. For times greater than 10 ns, the shape fits well to a single exponential with relaxation rates of $\lambda_{\textrm{Al}} = 1.3 \pm 0.2\,(\textrm{stat.}) \pm 0.3\,(\textrm{syst.})\,\pms$ and $\lambda_{\textrm{Ag}} = 1.0 \pm 0.2\,(\textrm{stat.}) \pm 0.2\,(\textrm{syst.})\,\pms$.

The TWIST Collaboration has completed a new measurement of the energy-angle spectrum of positrons from the decay of highly polarized muons. A simultaneous measurement of the muon decay parameters {\rho}, {\delta}, and (P_{\mu}){\xi} tests the Standard Model (SM) in a purely leptonic process and provides improved limits for relevant extensions to the SM. Specifically, for the generalized left-right symmetric model |(g_R/g_L){\zeta}|<0.020 and (g_L/g_R)m_2> 578 GeV/c^2, both 90% C.L.

The TRIUMF Weak Interaction Symmetry Test (TWIST) experiment was designed to test the standard model at high precision in the purely leptonic decay of polarized muons. A general four-fermion interaction model is used to describe the muon decay. TWIST measures three of the four muon decay parameters of this model, $\rho$, $\delta$ and $P_{\mu}^{\pi} \xi$, from the shape of the momentum-angle spectrum. The results of this model independent approach are compared to the standard model predictions and used to constrain new physics. Our collaboration has finalized the blind analysis of the final experimental data taken in 2006 and 2007. We present the first measurement of the energy spectrum up to 70 MeV of electrons from the decay of negative muons after they become bound in $^{27}$Al atoms. The data were taken with the TWIST apparatus at TRIUMF. We find a muon lifetime of (864.6 $\pm$ 1.2) ns, in agreement with earlier measurements. The asymmetry of the decay spectrum is consistent with zero, indicating that the atomic capture has completely depolarised the muons. The measured momentum spectrum is in reasonable agreement with theoretical predictions at the higher energies, but differences around the peak of the spectrum indicate the need for \oalpha radiative corrections to the calculations. The present measurement is the most precise measurement of the decay spectrum of muons bound to any nucleus.

We have searched for 14.4 keV solar axions or more general axion-like particles (ALPs), that may be emitted in the M1 nuclear transition of 57Fe, by using the axion-to-photon conversion in the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) with evacuated magnet bores (Phase I). From the absence of excess of the monoenergetic X-rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun, we set model-independent constraints on the coupling constants of pseudoscalar particles that couple to two photons and to a nucleon g_{a\gamma} |-1.19 g_{aN}^{0}+g_{aN}^{3}|<1.36\times 10^{-16} GeV^{-1} for m_{a}<0.03 eV at the 95% confidence level., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures. We present the results of a search for a high-energy axion emission signal from 7Li (0.478 MeV) and D(p,gamma)3He (5.5 MeV) nuclear transitions using a low-background gamma-ray calorimeter during Phase I of the CAST experiment. These so-called "hadronic axions" could provide a solution to the long-standing strong-CP problem and can be emitted from the solar core from nuclear M1 transitions. This is the first such search for high-energy pseudoscalar bosons with couplings to nucleons conducted using a helioscope approach. We have searched for solar axions or other pseudoscalar particles that couple to two photons by using the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) setup. Whereas we previously have reported results from CAST with evacuated magnet bores (Phase I), setting limits on lower mass axions, here we report results from CAST where the magnet bores were filled with \hefour gas (Phase II) of variable pressure. The introduction of gas generated a refractive photon mass $m_\gamma$, thereby achieving the maximum possible conversion rate for those axion masses \ma that match $m_\gamma$. With 160 different pressure settings we have scanned \ma up to about 0.4 eV, taking approximately 2 h of data for each setting. From the absence of excess X-rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun, we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of $\gag\lesssim 2.17\times 10^{-10} {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ at 95% CL for $\ma \lesssim 0.4$ eV, the exact result depending on the pressure setting. The excluded parameter range covers realistic axion models with a Peccei-Quinn scale in the neighborhood of $f_{\rm a}\sim10^{7}$ GeV. The CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) experiment is searching for solar axions by their conversion into photons inside the magnet pipe of an LHC dipole. The analysis of the data recorded during the first phase of the experiment with vacuum in the magnet pipes has resulted in the most restrictive experimental limit on the coupling constant of axions to photons. In the second phase, CAST is operating with a buffer gas inside the magnet pipes in order to extent the sensitivity of the experiment to higher axion masses. We will present the first results on the $^{4}{\rm He}$ data taking as well as the system upgrades that have been operated in the last year in order to adapt the experiment for the $^{3}{\rm He}$ data taking. We have started the development of a detector system, sensitive to single photons in the eV energy range, to be suitably coupled to one of the CAST magnet ports. This system should open to CAST a window on possible detection of low energy Axion Like Particles emitted by the sun. Preliminary tests have involved a cooled photomultiplier tube coupled to the CAST magnet via a Galileian telescope and a switched 40 m long optical fiber. This system has reached the limit background level of the detector alone in ideal conditions, and two solar tracking runs have been performed with it at CAST. Such a measurement has never been done before with an axion helioscope. The TWIST collaboration has performed new measurements of two of the parameters that describe muon decay: $\rho$, which governs the shape of the overall momentum spectrum, and $\delta$, which governs the momentum dependence of the parity-violating decay asymmetry. This analysis gives the results $\rho=0.75014\pm 0.00017(\text{stat})\pm 0.00044(\text{syst})\pm 0.00011(\eta)$, where the last uncertainty arises from the correlation between $\rho$ and the decay parameter $\eta$, and $\delta = 0.75067\pm 0.00030(\text{stat})\pm 0.00067(\text{syst})$. These are consistent with the value of 3/4 given for both parameters in the Standard Model of particle physics, and are a factor of two more precise than the measurements previously published by TWIST. A new global analysis of all available muon decay data incorporating these results is presented. Improved lower and upper limits on the decay parameter $P_\mu^\pi\xi$ of $0.99524 < P_\mu^\pi\xi \leq \xi < 1.00091$ at 90% confidence are determined, where $P_\mu^\pi$ is the polarization of the muon when it is created during pion decay, and $\xi$ governs the muon decay asymmetry. These results set new model-independent constraints on the possible weak interactions of right-handed particles. We report measurements of the $\pi^- p \to \pi^o n$ differential cross sections at six momenta (104-143 MeV/c) and four angles (0-40 deg) by detection of $\gamma$-ray pairs from $\pi^o \to \gamma \gamma$ decays using the TRIUMF RMC spectrometer. This region exhibits a vanishing zero-degree cross section from destructive interference between s-- and p--waves, thus yielding special sensitivity to pion-nucleon dynamics and isospin symmetry breaking. One of the three X-ray detectors of the CAST experiment searching for solar axions is a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with a multi-wire proportional counter (MWPC) as a readout structure. Its design has been optimized to provide high sensitivity to the detection of the low intensity X-ray signal expected in the CAST experiment. A low hardware threshold of 0.8 keV is safely set during normal data taking periods, and the overall efficiency for the detection of photons coming from conversion of solar axions is 62 %. Shielding has been installed around the detector, lowering the background level to 4.10 x 10^-5 counts/cm^2/s/keV between 1 and 10 keV. We report measurements of double radiative capture in pionic hydrogen and pionic deuterium. The measurements were performed with the RMC spectrometer at the TRIUMF cyclotron by recording photon pairs from pion stops in liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. We obtained absolute branching ratios of $(3.02 \pm 0.27 (stat.) \pm 0.31 (syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for hydrogen and $(1.42 \pm ^{0.09}_{0.12} (stat.) \pm 0.11 (syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for deuterium, and relative branching ratios of double radiative capture to single radiative capture of $(7.68 \pm 0.69(stat.) \pm 0.79(syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for hydrogen and $(5.44 \pm^{0.34}_{0.46}(stat.) \pm 0.42(syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for deuterium. For hydrogen, the measured branching ratio and photon energy-angle distributions are in fair agreement with a reaction mechanism involving the annihilation of the incident $\pi^-$ on the $\pi^+$ cloud of the target proton. For deuterium, the measured branching ratio and energy-angle distributions are qualitatively consistent with simple arguments for the expected role of the spectator neutron. A comparison between our hydrogen and deuterium data and earlier beryllium and carbon data reveals substantial changes in the relative branching ratios and the energy-angle distributions and is in agreement with the expected evolution of the reaction dynamics from an annihilation process in S-state capture to a bremsstrahlung process in P-state capture. The quantity P_{mu}^{pi}xi, where xi is one of the muon decay parameters and $P_{\mu}^{\pi}$ is the degree of muon polarization in pion decay, has been measured. The value P_{mu}^{pi}xi = 1.0003 +- 0.0006 stat. +- 0.0038 syst. was obtained. This result agrees with previous measurements but is over a factor of two more precise. The K^+ \to \pi^0 \mu^+ \nu \gamma ($K_{\mu 3 \gamma}$) decay has been measured with stopped positive kaons at the KEK 12 GeV proton synchrotron. A $K_{\mu 3 \gamma}$ sample containing 125 events was obtained. The partial branching ratio $Br(K_{\mu 3 \gamma}, E_{\gamma}>30 {\rm MeV}, \theta_{\mu^+ \gamma}>20^{\circ})$ was found to be $[2.4 \pm 0.5(stat) \pm 0.6(syst)]\times 10^{-5}$, which is in good agreement with theoretical predictions., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Physics Letters B

We report a measurement of the ortho-para transition rate in the p$\mu$p molecule. The experiment was conducted at TRIUMF via the measurement of the time dependence of the 5.2 MeV neutrons from muon capture in liquid hydrogen. The measurement yielded an ortho-para rate $\Lambda_{op} = (11.1 \pm 1.7 \pm^{0.9}_{0.6}) \times 10^4$ s$^{-1}$ that is substantially larger than the earlier result of Bardin {\it et al.} We discuss the striking implications for the proton's induced pseudoscalar coupling $g_p$., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. The muon decay parameter delta has been measured by the TWIST collaboration. We find delta = 0.74964 +- 0.00066(stat.) +- 0.00112(syst.), consistent with the Standard Model value of 3/4. This result implies that the product Pmuxi of the muon polarization in pion decay, Pmu, and the muon decay parameter xi falls within the 90% confidence interval 0.9960 < Pmuxi < xi < 1.0040. The $K^+ \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^+ \nu$ ($K_{e4}^{00}$) decay has been measured with stopped positive kaons for a data sample of 216 events. A comparison of the observed spectra with a Monte Carlo simulation determined the $K_{e4}^{00}$ form factor. The results are compatible with the $K^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^+ \nu$ data, as estimated from the $\Delta I=1/2$ rule. A search for T-violating transverse muon polarization ($P_T$) in the $K^{+}\to \pi^{0}\mu^{+}\nu$ decay was performed using kaon decays at rest. A new improved value, $P_T= -0.0017\pm 0.0023 (stat)\pm 0.0011 (syst)$, was obtained giving an upper limit, $| P_T | < 0.0050$. We report a search for low-lying exotic baryons via double radiative capture on pionic hydrogen. The data were collected at the TRIUMF cyclotron using the RMC spectrometer by detecting gamma-ray pairs from pion stops in liquid hydrogen. No evidence was found to support an earlier claim for exotic baryons of masses 1004 and 1044 MeV/$c^2$. We report a search for d^* dibaryon production by double-radiative capture on pionic deuterium. The experiment was conducted at the TRIUMF cyclotron using the RMC cylindrical pair spectrometer, and detected gamma-ray coincidences following pion stops in liquid deuterium. We found no evidence for narrow dibaryons, and obtained a branching ratio upper limit, BR < 6.7 times 10^{-6} (90% C.L.), for narrow d^* production in the mass range from 1920 to 1980 MeV. We report measurements of $\gamma$--ray spectra from muon capture on $^{35}$Cl. For the allowed Gamow--Teller transitions to the $^{35}$S$(2939, 3/2^+)$ state and the $^{35}$S$(3421, 5/2^+)$ state we obtained their capture rates, hyperfine dependences and $\gamma$--$\nu$ correlation coefficients. The capture rates and hyperfine dependences were compared to shell model calculations using the complete 1s--0d space and the universal SD interaction. With $g_p / g_a = 6.7$ and $g_a = -1.00$ (or $g_a = -1.26$) we found agreement of the model and the data at the 1--2 $\sigma$ level. We report the first observation of double radiative capture on pionic hydrogen. The 8.4 Tesla, 10 m long transverse magnetic field of a twin aperture LHC bending magnet can be utilized as a macroscopic coherent solar axion-to-photon converter. Numerical calculations show that the integrated time of alignment with the Sun would be 33 days per year with the magnet on a tracking table capable of $\pm 5^o$ in the vertical direction and $\pm 40^o$ in the horizontal direction. The existing lower bound on the axion-to-photon coupling constant can be improved by a factor between 50 and 100 in 3 years, i.e., $g_{a\gamma\gamma} \lesssim 9\cdot 10^{-11} GeV^{-1}$ for axion masses $\lesssim$ 1 eV. This value falls within the existing open axion mass window. The first measurement of the elementary process $\mu^- p \rightarrow \nu_{\mu} n \gamma$ is reported. A photon pair spectrometer was used to measure the partial branching ratio ($2.10 \pm 0.22) \times 10^{-8}$ for photons of k > 60 MeV. The value of the weak pseudoscalar coupling constant determined from the partial branching ratio is $g_p(q^{2}=-0.88m_{\mu}^2) = (9.8 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.3) \cdot g_a(0)$, where the first error is the quadrature sum of statistical and systematic uncertainties and the second error is due to the uncertainty in $\lambda_{op}$, the decay rate of the ortho to para $p \mu p$ molecule.
