The traditional method of identifying symmetry-breaking phase transitions through the emergence of a single-particle gap encounters significant challenges in quantum materials with strong fluctuations. To address this, we have developed a data-driven approach using a domain-adversarial neural network trained on simulated spectra of cuprates. This model compensates for the scarcity of experimental data -- a significant barrier to the wide deployment of machine learning in physical research -- by leveraging the abundance of theoretically simulated data. When applied to unlabeled experimental spectra, our model successfully distinguishes the true superconducting states from gapped fluctuating states, without the need for fine temperature sampling across the transition. Further, the explanation of our machine learning model reveals the crucial role of the Fermi-surface spectral intensity even in gapped states. It paves the way for robust and direct spectroscopic identification of fluctuating orders, particularly in low-dimensional, strongly correlated materials., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

In this article, we prove a version of Martin and Skora's conjecture that convergence groups on the $2$-sphere are covered by Kleinian groups. Given a relatively hyperbolic group pair $(G,\mathcal{P})$ with planar boundary and no Sierpinski carpet or cut points in its boundary, and with $G$ one ended and virtually having no $2$-torsion, we show that $G$ is virtually Kleinian. We also give applications to various versions of the Cannon conjecture and to convergence groups acting on $S^2$., Comment: 40 pages, no figures; in this revision we made several changes including adding Corollary 3.10 and revising section 4

Mata is a well-engineered automata library written in C++ that offers a unique combination of speed and simplicity. It is meant to serve in applications such as string constraint solving and reasoning about regular expressions, and as a~reference implementation of automata algorithms. Besides basic algorithms for (non)deterministic automata, it implements a fast simulation reduction and antichain-based language inclusion checking. The simplicity allows a straightforward access to the low-level structures, making it relatively easy to extend and modify. Besides the C++ API, the library also implements a Python binding. The library comes with a large benchmark of automata problems collected from relevant applications such as string constraint solving, regular model checking, and reasoning about regular expressions. We show that Mata is on this benchmark significantly faster than all libraries from a wide range of automata libraries we collected. Its usefulness in string constraint solving is demonstrated by the string solver Z3-Noodler, which is based on Mata and outperforms the state of the art in string constraint solving on many standard benchmarks.

The goal of this paper is to give an exposition of some results of Bestvina-Mess on local connectivity of the boundary of a one-ended word hyperbolic group. We also give elementary proofs that all hyperbolic groups are semistable at infinity and their boundaries are linearly connected in the one-ended case. Geoghegan first observed that semistability at infinity is a consequence of local connectivity using ideas from shape theory, and Bonk-Kleiner proved linear connectivity using analytical methods. The methods in this paper are closely based on the original ideas of Bestvina-Mess., Comment: Dedicated to Mike Mihalik on his 70th birthday. 16 pages. Several new algorithms for deciding emptiness of Boolean combinations of regular languages and of languages of alternating automata (AFA) have been proposed recently, especially in the context of analysing regular expressions and in string constraint solving. The new algorithms demonstrated a significant potential, but they have never been systematically compared, neither among each other nor with the state-of-the art implementations of existing (non)deterministic automata-based methods. In this paper, we provide the first such comparison as well as an overview of the existing algorithms and their implementations. We collect a diverse benchmark mostly originating in or related to practical problems from string constraint solving, analysing LTL properties, and regular model checking, and evaluate collected implementations on it. The results reveal the best tools and hint on what the best algorithms and implementation techniques are. Roughly, although some advanced algorithms are fast, such as antichain algorithms and reductions to IC3/PDR, they are not as overwhelmingly dominant as sometimes presented and there is no clear winner. The simplest NFA-based technology may be actually the best choice, depending on the problem source and implementation style. Our findings should be highly relevant for development of these techniques as well as for related fields such as string constraint solving.

Modeling the recovery of interdependent critical infrastructure is a key component of quantifying and optimizing societal resilience to disruptive events. However, simulating the recovery of large-scale interdependent systems under random disruptive events is computationally expensive. Therefore, we propose the application of Deep Operator Networks (DeepONets) in this paper to accelerate the recovery modeling of interdependent systems. DeepONets are ML architectures which identify mathematical operators from data. The form of governing equations DeepONets identify and the governing equation of interdependent systems recovery model are similar. Therefore, we hypothesize that DeepONets can efficiently model the interdependent systems recovery with little training data. We applied DeepONets to a simple case of four interdependent systems with sixteen states. DeepONets, overall, performed satisfactorily in predicting the recovery of these interdependent systems for out of training sample data when compared to reference results.

We propose a multi-fidelity neural network (MFNN) tailored for rapid high-dimensional grid power flow simulations and contingency analysis with scarce high-fidelity contingency data. The proposed model comprises two networks -- the first one trained on DC approximation as low-fidelity data and coupled to a high-fidelity neural net trained on both low- and high-fidelity power flow data. Each network features a latent module which parametrizes the model by a discrete grid topology vector for generalization (e.g., $n$ power lines with $k$ disconnections or contingencies, if any), and the targeted high-fidelity output is a weighted sum of linear and nonlinear functions. We tested the model on 14- and 118-bus test cases and evaluated its performance based on the $n-k$ power flow prediction accuracy with respect to imbalanced contingency data and high-to-low-fidelity sample ratio. The results presented herein demonstrate MFNN's potential and its limits with up to two orders of magnitude faster and more accurate power flow solutions than DC approximation., Comment: 6 pages

Let $(\Gamma,\mathbb{P})$ be a relatively hyperbolic group pair that is relatively one ended. Then the Bowditch boundary of $(\Gamma,\mathbb{P})$ is locally connected. Bowditch previously established this conclusion under the additional assumption that all peripheral subgroups are finitely presented, either one or two ended, and contain no infinite torsion subgroups. We remove these restrictions; we make no restriction on the cardinality of $\Gamma$ and no restriction on the peripheral subgroups $P \in \mathbb{P}$., Comment: 39 pages. Tumor cells invade individually or in groups, mediated by mechanical interactions between cells and their surrounding matrix. These multicellular dynamics are reminiscent of leader-follower coordination and epithelial-mesenchymal transitions (EMT) in tissue development, which may occur via dysregulation of associated molecular or physical mechanisms. However, it remains challenging to elucidate such phenotypic heterogeneity and plasticity without precision measurements of single cell behavior. The convergence of technological developments in live cell imaging, biophysical measurements, and 3D biomaterials are highly promising to reveal how tumor cells cooperate in aberrant microenvironments. Here, we highlight new results in collective migration from the perspective of cancer biology and bioengineering. First, we review the biology of collective cell migration. Next, we consider physics-inspired analyses based on order parameters and phase transitions. Further, we examine the interplay of metabolism and heterogeneity in collective migration. We then review the extracellular matrix, and new modalities for mechanical characterization of 3D biomaterials. We also explore epithelial-mesenchymal plasticity and implications for tumor progression. Finally, we speculate on future directions for integrating mechanobiology and cancer cell biology to elucidate collective migration.

We study a nonlinear evolutionary partial differential equation that can be viewed as a generalization of the heat equation where the temperature gradient is a~priori bounded but the heat flux provides merely \mbox{$L^1$-coercivity}. Applying higher differentiability techniques in space and time, choosing a special weighted norm (equivalent to the Euclidean norm in $\mathbb{R}^d$), incorporating finer properties of integrable functions and using the concept of renormalized solution, we prove long-time and large-data existence and uniqueness of weak solution, with an $L^1$-integrable flux, to an initial spatially-periodic problem for all values of a positive model parameter. If this parameter is smaller than $2/(d+1)$, where $d$ denotes the spatial dimension, we obtain higher integrability of the flux. As the developed approach is not restricted to a scalar equation, we also present an analogous result for nonlinear parabolic systems in which the nonlinearity, being the gradient of a strictly convex function, gives an a-priori $L^\infty$-bound on the gradient of the unknown solution.

For a group $G$ (of type $F$) acting properly on a coarse Poincar\'{e} duality space $X$, Kapovich-Kleiner introduced a coarse version of Alexander duality between $G$ and its complement in $X$. More precisely, the cohomology of $G$ with group ring coefficients is dual to a certain \v{C}ech homology group of the family of increasing neighborhoods of a $G$-orbit in $X$. This duality applies more generally to coarse embeddings of certain contractible simplicial complexes into coarse $PD(n)$ spaces. In this paper we introduce a relative version of this \v{C}ech homology that satisfies the Eilenberg-Steenrod Exactness Axiom, and we prove a relative version of coarse Alexander duality. As an application we provide a detailed proof of the following result, first stated by Kapovich-Kleiner. Given a $2$-complex formed by gluing $k$ halfplanes along their boundary lines and a coarse embedding into a contractible $3$-manifold, the complement consists of $k$ deep components that are arranged cyclically in a pattern called a Jordan cycle. We use the Jordan cycle as an invariant in proving the existence of a $3$-manifold group that is virtually Kleinian but not itself Kleinian., Comment: v3: 33 pages, 3 figures; minor changes

A group $\Gamma$ with a family of subgroups $\mathbb{P}$ is relatively hyperbolic if $\Gamma$ admits a cusp-uniform action on a proper $\delta$--hyperbolic space. We show that any two such spaces for a given group pair are quasi-isometric, provided the spaces have "constant horospherical distortion," a condition satisfied by Groves--Manning's cusped Cayley graph and by all negatively curved symmetric spaces. Consequently the Bowditch boundary admits a canonical quasisymmetric structure, which coincides with the "naturally occurring" quasisymmetric structure of the symmetric space when considering lattices in rank one symmetric spaces. We show that a group $\Gamma$ is a lattice in a negatively curved symmetric space $X$ if and only if a cusped space for $\Gamma$ is quasi-isometric to the symmetric space. We also prove an ideal triangle characterization of the $\delta$--hyperbolic spaces with uniformly perfect boundary due to Meyer and Bourdon--Kleiner. An appendix concerns the equivalence of several definitions of conical limit point found in the literature., Comment: 40 pages, 1 figure. We study the Bowditch boundaries of relatively hyperbolic group pairs, focusing on the case where there are no cut points. We show that if $(G,\mathcal{P})$ is a rigid relatively hyperbolic group pair whose boundary embeds in $S^2$, then the action on the boundary extends to a convergence group action on $S^2$. More generally, if the boundary is connected and planar with no cut points, we show that every element of $\mathcal{P}$ is virtually a surface group. This conclusion is consistent with the conjecture that such a group $G$ is virtually Kleinian. We give numerous examples to show the necessity of our assumptions., Comment: 25 pages; minor edits and clarifications in this version

We systematically investigate the complete class of vacuum solutions in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory which belong to the Kundt family of non-expanding, shear-free and twist-free geometries (without gyratonic matter terms) in any dimension. The field equations are explicitly derived and simplified, and their solutions classified into three distinct subfamilies. Algebraic structures of the Weyl and Ricci curvature tensors are determined. The corresponding curvature scalars directly enter the invariant form of equation of geodesic deviation, enabling us to understand the specific local physical properties of the gravitational field constrained by the EGB theory. We also present and analyze several interesting explicit classes of such vacuum solutions, namely the Ricci type III spacetimes, all geometries with constant-curvature transverse space, and the whole pp-wave class admitting a covariantly constant null vector field. These exact Kundt EGB gravitational waves exhibit new features which are not possible in Einstein's general relativity., Comment: 22 pages, to appear in Phys. Rev. D

A JSJ decomposition of a group is a splitting that allows one to classify all possible splittings of the group over a certain family of edge groups. Although JSJ decompositions are not unique in general, Guirardel--Levitt have constructed a canonical JSJ decomposition, the tree of cylinders, which classifies splittings of relatively hyperbolic groups over elementary subgroups. In this paper, we give a new topological construction of the Guirardel--Levitt tree of cylinders, and we show that this tree depends only on the homeomorphism type of the Bowditch boundary. Furthermore, the tree of cylinders admits a natural action by the group of homeomorphisms of the boundary. In particular, the quasi-isometry group of $(G,\mathbb{P})$ acts naturally on the tree of cylinders., Comment: 31 pages, Section 5 from the previous version has been rewritten and is now Section 5 and Section 6. The accurate sampling of protein dynamics is an ongoing challenge despite the utilization of High-Performance Computers (HPC) systems. Utilizing only "brute force" MD simulations requires an unacceptably long time to solution. Adaptive sampling methods allow a more effective sampling of protein dynamics than standard MD simulations. Depending on the restarting strategy the speed up can be more than one order of magnitude. One challenge limiting the utilization of adaptive sampling by domain experts is the relatively high complexity of efficiently running adaptive sampling on HPC systems. We discuss how the ExTASY framework can set up new adaptive sampling strategies, and reliably execute resulting workflows at scale on HPC platforms. A finitely presented group is semistable at infinity if all proper rays in the Cayley 2-complex are properly homotopic. A long standing open question asks whether all finitely presented groups are semistable at infinity. This article provides a brief introduction to the notion of semistability at infinity in geometric group theory. We discuss techniques for proving semistability at infinity that involve either the topology of the boundary or the existence of certain hierarchies of splittings of the group. As an illustration of the second technique, we apply a combination theorem of Mihalik-Tschantz to prove semistability at infinity for groups that are hyperbolic relative to polycyclic subgroups using work of Mihalik-Swenson and Louder-Touikan., Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure. We investigate main properties and mutual relations of the so-called A and B-metrics with any value of the cosmological constant. In particular, we explicitly show that both the AII and BI-metrics are, in fact, the famous Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter spacetime (that is the AI-metric) boosted to superluminal speed. Together they form the complete gravitational field of a tachyon in Minkowski or (anti-)de Sitter universe. We experimentally study the transition from steady flow to unsteady flow in a quasi-2D granular heap when small amounts of water are added to monodisperse glass spheres. Particles flow uniformly down both sides of the heap for low water content, but unsteady flow occurs as the water content increases. The unsteady flow mode consists of a non-depositing downslope avalanche and an upslope propagating granular jump. The transition from steady to unsteady flow occurs when the slope exceeds a critical angle as a result of water-induced cohesion. Under unsteady flow conditions, the deposited heap consists of loosely packed and densely packed layers, the formation of which is closely related to the unsteady flow dynamics., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

The aim of this work is to describe the complete family of non-expanding Plebanski-Demianski type D space-times and to present their possible interpretation. We explicitly express the most general form of such (electro)vacuum solutions with any cosmological constant, and we investigate the geometrical and physical meaning of the seven parameters they contain. We present various metric forms, and by analyzing the corresponding coordinates in the weak-field limit we elucidate the global structure of these space-times, such as the character of possible singularities. We also demonstrate that members of this family can be understood as generalizations of classic B-metrics. The Gauss-Bonnet gravity is a special case of so-called Quadratic Gravity, which is an extension of Einstein's theory with additional terms in action that are quadratic combinations of the Riemann tensor and its contractions. These corrections are needed, for example, in perturbative quantum gravity. We consider the family of Kundt spacetimes, which is defined in a purely geometrical way by admitting a shear-free, twist-free and expansion-free null geodesic congruence. In particular, we focus on the Kundt solutions without gyratonic terms, and we investigate the constraints imposed by the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet field equations. In this paper we study CAT(0) groups and their splittings as graphs of groups. For one-ended CAT(0) groups with isolated flats we prove a theorem characterizing exactly when the visual boundary is locally connected. This characterization depends on whether the group has a certain type of splitting over a virtually abelian subgroup. In the locally connected case, we describe the boundary as a tree of metric spaces in the sense of \'Swi\k{a}tkowski. A significant tool used in the proofs of the above results is a general convex splitting theorem for arbitrary CAT(0) groups. If a CAT(0) group splits as a graph of groups with convex edge groups, then the vertex groups are also CAT(0) groups., Comment: 37 pages. The introduction has been substantially rewritten. A claimed result from an earlier version about the semistability of all CAT(0) groups with isolated flats has been removed because the proof contained an error. In this work we present and analyze a new class of coordinate representations of de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes for which the metrics are diagonal and (typically) static and axially symmetric. Contrary to the well-known forms of these fundamental geometries, that usually correspond to a 1+3 foliation with the 3-space of a constant spatial curvature, the new metrics are adapted to a 2+2 foliation, and are warped products of two 2-spaces of constant curvature. This new class of (anti-)de Sitter metrics depends on the value of cosmological constant Lambda and two discrete parameters +1,0,-1 related to the curvature of the 2-spaces. The class admits 3 distinct subcases for Lambda>0 and 8 subcases for Lambda<0. We systematically study all these possibilities. In particular, we explicitly present the corresponding parametrizations of the (anti-)de Sitter hyperboloid, visualize the coordinate lines and surfaces within the global conformal cylinder, investigate their mutual relations, present some closely related forms of the metrics, and give transformations to standard de Sitter and anti-de Sitter metrics. Using these results, we also provide a physical interpretation of B-metrics as exact gravitational fields of a tachyon., Comment: 44 pages, 26 figures: final extended version published in Phys. Rev. For many macromolecular systems the accurate sampling of the relevant regions on the potential energy surface cannot be obtained by a single, long Molecular Dynamics (MD) trajectory. New approaches are required to promote more efficient sampling. We present the design and implementation of the Extensible Toolkit for Advanced Sampling and analYsis (ExTASY) for building and executing advanced sampling workflows on HPC systems. ExTASY provides Python based "templated scripts" that interface to an interoperable and high-performance pilot-based run time system, which abstracts the complexity of managing multiple simulations. ExTASY supports the use of existing highly-optimised parallel MD code and their coupling to analysis tools based upon collective coordinates which do not require a priori knowledge of the system to bias. We describe two workflows which both couple large "ensembles" of relatively short MD simulations with analysis tools to automatically analyse the generated trajectories and identify molecular conformational structures that will be used on-the-fly as new starting points for further "simulation-analysis" iterations. One of the workflows leverages the Locally Scaled Diffusion Maps technique; the other makes use of Complementary Coordinates techniques to enhance sampling and generate start-points for the next generation of MD simulations. We show that the ExTASY tools have been deployed on a range of HPC systems including ARCHER (Cray CX30), Blue Waters (Cray XE6/XK7), and Stampede (Linux cluster), and that good strong scaling can be obtained up to 1000s of MD simulations, independent of the size of each simulation. We discuss how ExTASY can be easily extended or modified by end-users to build their own workflows, and ongoing work to improve the usability and robustness of ExTASY., Comment: 10 pages

We give a generalized and self-contained account of Haglund-Paulin's wallspaces and Sageev's construction of the CAT(0) cube complex dual to a wallspace. We examine criteria on a wallspace leading to finiteness properties of its dual cube complex. Our discussion is aimed at readers wishing to apply these methods to produce actions of groups on cube complexes and understand their nature. We develop the wallspace ideas in a level of generality that facilitates their application. Our main result describes the structure of dual cube complexes arising from relatively hyperbolic groups. Let H_1,...,H_s be relatively quasiconvex codimension-1 subgroups of a group G that is hyperbolic relative to P_1,...,P_r. We prove that G acts relatively cocompactly on the associated dual CAT(0) cube complex C. This generalizes Sageev's result that C is cocompact when G is hyperbolic. When P_1,...,P_r are abelian, we show that the dual CAT(0) cube complex C has a G-cocompact CAT(0) truncation., Comment: 58 pages, 12 figures. First, for the family P_{n,c}(z) = z^n + c, we show that the geometric limit of the Mandelbrot sets M_n(P) as n tends to infinity exists and is the closed unit disk, and that the geometric limit of the Julia sets J(P_{n,c}) as n tends to infinity is the unit circle, at least when the modulus of c is not one. Then we establish similar results for some generalizations of this family; namely, the maps F_{t,c} (z) = z^t+c for real t>= 2, and the rational maps R_{n,c,a} (z) = z^n + c + a/z^n., Comment: 29 pages, 16 figures (34 pic files), submitted

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
Cyclotron resonance has been measured in far-infrared transmission of GaAs/Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As heterostructures with an etched hexagonal lateral superlattice. Non-linear dependence of the resonance position on magnetic field was observed as well as its splitting into several modes. Our explanation, based on a perturbative calculation, describes the observed phenomena as a weak effect of the lateral potential on the two-dimensional electron gas. Using this approach, we found a correlation between parameters of the lateral patterning and the created effective potential and obtain thus insights on how the electronic miniband structure has been tuned. The miniband dispersion was calculated using a simplified model and allowed us to formulate four basic criteria that have to be satisfied to reach graphene-like physics in such systems.

Mathematics - Dynamical Systems ,37F10, 37M99 - Abstract
The Medusa algorithm takes as input two postcritically finite quadratic polynomials and outputs the quadratic rational map which is the mating of the two polynomials (if it exists). Specifically, the output is a sequence of approximations for the parameters of the rational map, as well as an image of its Julia set. Whether these approximations converge is answered using Thurston's topological characterization of rational maps. This algorithm was designed by John Hamal Hubbard, and implemented in 1998 by Christian Henriksen and REU students David Farris, and Kuon Ju Liu. In this paper we describe the algorithm and its implementation, discuss some output from the program (including many pictures) and related questions. Specifically, we include images and a discussion for some shared matings, Lattes examples, and tuning sequences of matings., Comment: 25 pages, many figures, submitted

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed and successfully applied to beam test data. It is based on a principal component analysis of energy deposits in the calorimeter layers, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energy resolution. Corrections for invisible hadronic energy and energy lost in dead material in front of and between the calorimeters of the ATLAS experiment were calculated with simulated Geant4 Monte Carlo events and used to reconstruct the energy of pions impinging on the calorimeters during the 2004 Barrel Combined Beam Test at the CERN H8 area. For pion beams with energies between 20 GeV and 180 GeV, the particle energy is reconstructed within 3% and the energy resolution is improved by between 11% and 25% compared to the resolution at the electromagnetic scale., Comment: 36 pages, 12 figures, accepted by JINST

We prepared Ga0.95Mn0.05As films on top of periodic arrays of InAs quantum dots. X-ray diffraction reveals periodically strained films, commensurate to substrate's patterning. The dots produce a tensile strain in GaMnAs while between the dots strain is compressive. Our experiments confirm that the average tensile strain in the film increases with decreasing dots separation. This trend in strain is accompanied by an increase of the out-of-plane magnetization component familiar from the established relation between strain and magnetic anisotropy in GaMnAs films. Our work provides a new route for controlling magneto-crystalline anisotropies in GaMnAs on a nanometer scale., Comment: Abstract + Text(4 pages) + References(16) + Figures captions(4). This is a continuation of our preceding paper devoted to signatures of quantum chaos in the geometric collective model of atomic nuclei. We apply the method by Peres to study ordered and disordered patterns in quantum spectra drawn as lattices in the plane of energy vs. average of a chosen observable. A good qualitative agreement with standard measures of chaos is manifested. The method provides an efficient tool for studying structural changes of eigenstates across quantum spectra of general systems., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Spectra of the geometric collective model of atomic nuclei are analyzed to identify chaotic correlations among nonrotational states. The model has been previously shown to exhibit a high degree of variability of regular and chaotic classical features with energy and control parameters. Corresponding signatures are now verified also on the quantum level for different schemes of quantization and with a variable classicality constant., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

The purpose of this erratum is to correct the proof of Theorem A.0.1 in the appendix to our article ``Hadamard spaces with isolated flats'' math.GR/0411232, which was jointly authored by Mohamad Hindawi, Hruska and Kleiner. In that appendix, many of the results of math.GR/0411232 about CAT(0) spaces with isolated flats are extended to a more general setting in which the isolated subspaces are not necessarily flats. However, one step of that extension does not follow from the argument we used the isolated flats setting. We provide a new proof that fills this gap. In addition, we give a more detailed account of several other parts of Theorem A.0.1, which were sketched in math.GR/0411232., Comment: 9 pages. To appear in Geom. Topol

Little is known about the global topology of the Fatou set $U(f)$ for holomorphic endomorphisms $f: \mathbb{CP}^k \to \mathbb{CP}^k$, when $k >1$. Classical theory describes $U(f)$ as the complement in $ \mathbb{CP}^k$ of the support of a dynamically-defined closed positive $(1,1)$ current. Given any closed positive $(1,1)$ current $S$ on $ \mathbb{CP}^k$, we give a definition of linking number between closed loops in $\mathbb{CP}^k \setminus \supp S$ and the current $S$. It has the property that if $lk(\gamma,S) \neq 0$, then $\gamma$ represents a non-trivial homology element in $H_1(\mathbb{CP}^k \setminus \supp S)$. As an application, we use these linking numbers to establish that many classes of endomorphisms of $\mathbb{CP}^2$ have Fatou components with infinitely generated first homology. For example, we prove that the Fatou set has infinitely generated first homology for any polynomial endomorphism of $\mathbb{CP}^2$ for which the restriction to the line at infinity is hyperbolic and has disconnected Julia set. In addition we show that a polynomial skew product of $\mathbb{CP}^2$ has Fatou set with infinitely generated first homology if some vertical Julia set is disconnected. We then conclude with a section of concrete examples and questions for further study., Comment: Revision 3: Added improvements to the discussion of skew products. 21 pages. Comments welcome

We lay the foundations for the study of relatively quasiconvex subgroups of relatively hyperbolic groups. These foundations require that we first work out a coherent theory of countable relatively hyperbolic groups (not necessarily finitely generated). We prove the equivalence of Gromov, Osin, and Bowditch's definitions of relative hyperbolicity for countable groups. We then give several equivalent definitions of relatively quasiconvex subgroups in terms of various natural geometries on a relatively hyperbolic group. We show that each relatively quasiconvex subgroup is itself relatively hyperbolic, and that the intersection of two relatively quasiconvex subgroups is again relatively quasiconvex. In the finitely generated case, we prove that every undistorted subgroup is relatively quasiconvex, and we compute the distortion of a finitely generated relatively quasiconvex subgroup., Comment: 44 pages, 2 figures. A polynomial skew product of C^2 is a map of the form f(z,w) = (p(z), q(z,w)), where p and q are polynomials, such that f is regular of degree d >= 2. For polynomial maps of C, hyperbolicity is equivalent to the condition that the closure of the postcritical set is disjoint from the Julia set; further, critical points either iterate to an attracting cycle or infinity. For polynomial skew products, Jonsson (Math. Ann., 1999) established that f is Axiom A if and only if the closure of the postcritical set is disjoint from the right analog of the Julia set. Here we present the analogous conclusion: critical orbits either escape to infinity or accumulate on an attracting set. In addition, we construct new examples of Axiom A maps demonstrating various postcritical behaviors., Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures

We introduce the bounded packing property for a subgroup of a countable discrete group G. This property gives a finite upper bound on the number of left cosets of the subgroup that are pairwise close in G. We establish basic properties of bounded packing, and give many examples; for instance, every subgroup of a countable, virtually nilpotent group has bounded packing. We explain several natural connections between bounded packing and group actions on CAT(0) cube complexes. Our main result establishes the bounded packing of relatively quasiconvex subgroups of a relatively hyperbolic group, under mild hypotheses. As an application, we prove that relatively quasiconvex subgroups have finite height and width, properties that strongly restrict the way families of distinct conjugates of the subgroup can intersect. We prove that an infinite, nonparabolic relatively quasiconvex subgroup of a relatively hyperbolic group has finite index in its commensurator. We also prove a virtual malnormality theorem for separable, relatively quasiconvex subgroups, which is new even in the word hyperbolic case., Comment: 45 pages, 2 figures. To appear in Geom. Topol. v2: Updated to address concerns of the referee. Added theorem that an infinite, nonparabolic relatively quasiconvex subgroup H of a relatively hyperbolic group has finite index in its commensurator. Added several new geometric results to Section 7. Theorem 8.9 on packing relative to peripheral subgroups is new

We construct a spin-drift-diffusion model to describe spin-polarized electron transport in zincblende semiconductors in the presence of magnetic fields, electric fields, and off-diagonal strain. We present predictions of the model for geometries that correspond to optical spin injection from the absorption of circularly polarized light, and for geometries that correspond to electrical spin injection from ferromagnetic contacts. Starting with the Keldysh Green's function description for a system driven out of equilibrium, we construct a semiclassical kinetic theory of electron spin transport in strained semiconductors in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. From this kinetic theory we derive spin-drift-diffusion equations for the components of the spin density matrix for the specific case of spatially uniform fields and uniform electron density. We solve the spin-drift-diffusion equations numerically and compare the resulting images with scanning Kerr microscopy data of spin-polarized conduction electrons flowing laterally in bulk epilayers of n-type GaAs. The spin-drift-diffusion model accurately describes the experimental observations. We contrast the properties of electron spin precession resulting from magnetic and strain fields. Spin-strain coupling depends linearly on electron wave vector and spin-magnetic field coupling is independent of electron wave vector. As a result, spatial coherence of precessing spin flows is better maintained with strain than with magnetic fields, and the spatial period of spin precession is independent of the applied electrical bias in strained structures whereas it is strongly bias dependent for the case of applied magnetic fields., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

In magnetic superconductors a moving vortex lattice is accompanied by an ac magnetic field which leads to the generation of spin waves. At resonance conditions the dynamics of vortices in magnetic superconductors changes drastically, resulting in strong peaks in the dc I-V characteristics at voltages at which the washboard frequency of vortex lattice matches the spin wave frequency $\omega_s({\bf g})$, where ${\bf g}$ are the reciprocal vortex lattice vectors. We show that if washboard frequency lies above the magnetic gap, peaks in the I-V characteristics in borocarbides and cuprate layered magnetic superconductors are strong enough to be observed over the background determined by the quasiparticles., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

For the class of polynomial skew products of C^2, we describe a rigorous computer algorithm which, for a given map F, will (1) build a model of the dynamics of F on its chain recurrent set, and (2) attempt to determine whether F is Axiom A. Further, we discuss how we used our implementation of this algorithm to establish Axiom A for several explicit cases., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, submitted
