The structure and mobility of dislocations in the layered semiconductor InSe is studied within a multiscale approach based on generalized Peierls--Nabarro model with material-specific parametrization derived from first principles. The plasticity of InSe turns out to be attributed to peculiarities of the generalized stacking fault relief for the interlayer dislocation slips such as existence of the stacking fault with a very low energy and low energy barriers. Our results give a consistent microscopic explanation of recently observed [Science {\bf 369}, 542 (2020)] exceptional plasticity of InSe., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Model description of patterns of atomic displacements in twisted bilayer systems has been proposed. The model is based on the consideration of several dislocation ensembles, employing a language that is widely used for grain boundaries and film/substrate systems. We show that three ensembles of parallel screw dislocations are sufficient both to describe the rotation of the layers as a whole, and for the vortex-like displacements resulting from elastic relaxation. The results give a clear explanation of the observed features of the structural state such as vortices, accompanied by alternating stacking., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We present the results of ab initio modeling of structure of dilute Ti-Fe, a typical representative of quenched Ti-based transition-metal alloys. We have demonstrated that beyond the solubility limit this alloy cannot be described in common terms of substitutional and interstitial alloys. Instead, very stable local clusters are formed in both low-temperature hcp and high-temperature bcc phases of alloys, with almost identical local structures. This gives an example of geometrically frustrated state and explains unusual concentration behavior of M\"ossbauer spectra discovered long ago for this system., Comment: 11 pages 5 figures accepted in J. Using methods of statistical kinetic theory parametrized with first-principles interatomic interactions that include chemical and strain contributions, we investigated the kinetics of decomposition and microstructure formation in Al-Cu alloys as a function of temperature and alloy concentration. We show that the decomposition of the solid solution forming platelets of copper, known as Guinier-Preston (GP) zones, includes several stages and that the transition from GP1 to GP2 zones is determined mainly by kinetic factors. With increasing temperature, the model predicts a gradual transition from platelet-like precipitates to equiaxial ones and at intermediate temperatures both precipitate morphologies may coexist., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

The kinetics of phase transformations at cooling of carbon steel in dependence on the temperature of preliminary annealing T$_{an}$ is studied. It is shown that the cooling from T$_{an}$ > A$_3$ (i. e. above the temperature of ferrite start) with the rate 90 - 100 K/s results in structural state which essentially dependent on T$_{an}$; at 750$^0$C < T$_{an}$ < 830$^0$C the transformation is of perlite type whereas at T$_{an}$ > 830$^0$C the martensitic structure arises. Our results evidence the formation of a special structural state in a certain range of temperatures near and above the boundary of two phase region which is characterized by a substantially nanoscale heterogeneity in carbon distribution, lattice distortions, and magnetic short-range order., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Based on ab-initio simulations, we report on the nature of principally different mechanisms for interaction of Mg and Zn atoms with grain boundaries in Al alloys leading to different morphology of segregation. The Mg atoms segregate in relatively wide GB region with heterogeneous agglomerations due to the deformation mechanism of solute-GB interaction. In contrast, in the case of Zn atoms an electronic mechanism associated with the formation of directional bonding is dominating in the solute-GB interaction. As a result, for Zn atoms it is energetically beneficial to occupy interstitial positions at the very GB and to be arranged into thin layers along the GBs. The results obtained show the essential role of elements chemistry in segregation formation and explain the qualitative features in morphology of GB segregation observed in Al-Mg and Al-Zn alloys with ultrafine grains., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, APL

Despite of the appearance of numerous new materials, the iron based alloys and steels continue to play an essential role in modern technology. The properties of a steel are determined by its structural state (ferrite, cementite, pearlite, bainite, martensite, and their combination) that is formed under thermal treatment as a result of the shear lattice reconstruction "gamma" (fcc) -> "alpha" (bcc) and carbon diffusion redistribution. We present a review on a recent progress in the development of a quantitative theory of the phase transformations and microstructure formation in steel that is based on an ab initio parameterization of the Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional. The results of computer modeling describe the regular change of transformation scenario under cooling from ferritic (nucleation and diffusion-controlled growth of the "alpha" phase to martensitic (the shear lattice instability "gamma" -> "alpha"). It has been shown that the increase in short-range magnetic order with decreasing the temperature plays a key role in the change of transformation scenarios. Phase-field modeling in the framework of a discussed approach demonstrates the typical transformation patterns.

A model of pearlite colony formation in carbon steels with ab-initio parameterization is proposed. The model describes the process of decomposition of austenite and cementite formation through a metastable intermediate structure by taking into account the increase of the magnetic order under the cooling. Autocatalytic mechanism of pearlite colony formation and the conditions for its implementation have been analyzed. We demonstrate that pearlite with lamellar structure is formed by autocatalytic mechanism when thermodynamic equilibrium between the initial phase (austenite) and the products of its decomposition (cementite and ferrite) does not take place. By using model expression for free energy with first-principles parameterization we find conditions of formation of both lamellar and globular structures, in agreement with experiment. Nanoscale inhomogeneities are typical for numerous metallic alloys and crucially important for their practical applications. At the same time, stabilization mechanisms of such a state are poorly understood. We present a general overview of the problem, together with a more detailed discussion of the prototype example, namely, Guinier-Preston zones in Al-based alloys. It is shown that coherent strain due to a misfit between inclusion and host crystal lattices plays a decisive role in the emergence of the inhomogeneous state. We suggest a model explaining formation of ultrathin plates (with the thickness of a few lattice constants) typical for Al-Cu alloys. Discreteness of the array of misfit dislocations and long-ranged elastic interactions between them are the key ingredients of the model. This opens a way to a general understanding of the nature of (meta)stable embedded nanoparticles in practically important systems., Comment: invited "perspective article"

First-principles calculations of the effect of carbon coverage on the atomic, electronic and magnetic structure of nickel and iron substrates demonstrate insignificant changes in the interatomic distances and magnetic moments on the atoms of the metallic substrates. The coverage of the iron surface by mono- and few-layer graphene induces significant changes in the orbital occupancies and exchange interactions between the layers in contrast to the case of a nickel substrate for which changes in the orbital ordering and exchange interactions are much smaller. The diversity of mesostructures formed in steel at cooling from a high-temperature austenite ("gamma") phase is determined by the interplay of shear reconstructions of crystal lattice and diffusion of carbon. Combining first-principles calculations with large-scale phase-field simulations we demonstrate a decisive role of magnetic degrees of freedom in the formation of energy relief along the Bain path of "gamma"-"alpha" transformation and, thus, in this interplay. We show that there is the main factor, namely, the magnetic state of iron and its evolution with temperature which controls the change in character of the transformation. Based on the computational results we propose a simple model which reproduces, in good agreement with experiment, the most important curves of the phase transformation in Fe-C, namely, the lines relevant to a start of ferrite, bainite, and martensite transformations. Phase-field simulations within the model describe qualitatively typical patterns at these transformations.

We present theoretical results on the high-temperature phase stability and phonon spectra of paramagnetic bcc iron which explicitly take into account many-body effects. Several peculiarities, including a pronounced softening of the [110] transverse (T$_1$) mode and a dynamical instability of the bcc lattice in harmonic approximation are identified. We relate these features to the ${\alpha}$-to-${\gamma}$ and ${\gamma}$-to-${\delta}$ phase transformations in iron. When a crystal is subjected to a periodic potential, under certain circumstances (such as when the period of the potential is close to the crystal periodicity; the potential is strong enough, etc.) it might adjust itself to follow the periodicity of the potential, resulting in a, so called, commensurate state. Such commensurate-incommensurate transitions are ubiquitous phenomena in many areas of condensed matter physics: from magnetism and dislocations in crystals, to vortices in superconductors, and atomic layers adsorbed on a crystalline surface. Of particular interest might be the properties of topological defects between the two commensurate phases: solitons, domain walls, and dislocation walls. Here we report a commensurate-incommensurate transition for graphene on top of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Depending on the rotational angle between the two hexagonal lattices, graphene can either stretch to adjust to a slightly different hBN periodicity (the commensurate state found for small rotational angles) or exhibit little adjustment (the incommensurate state). In the commensurate state, areas with matching lattice constants are separated by domain walls that accumulate the resulting strain. Such soliton-like objects present significant fundamental interest, and their presence might explain recent observations when the electronic, optical, Raman and other properties of graphene-hBN heterostructures have been notably altered.

Kinetics of polymorphous "gamma"-"alfa" transformation in Fe is studied numerically within a model taking into account both lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom, based on first-principle calculations of the total energy for different magnetic states. It is shown that magnetoelastic phenomena, namely, a strong sensitivity of the potential relief along the Bain deformation path to the magnetic state, are crucial for the picture of the transformation. With the temperature increase, a scenario of the phase transformation evolves from a homogeneous lattice instability at TMs. In the latter case, a stage of formation of a tweed-like structure occurs, with a strong short-range order and slow interphase fluctuations., Comment: Accepted in "Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter"

Effects of doping on morphology of iron carbide (cementite) nanowires have been explored by first principle electronic structure calculations. We examined the role of several realistic impurities (Si, Mn, V, P and S) in the formation energies of the cementite nanowires with different sizes and morphologies. It is shown that the presence of the impurities decreases the formation energy and can switch the preferable axis of the cementite nanowire growth. Exchange interactions in {\alpha}- and {\gamma}-Fe are investigated within an ab-initio spin spiral approach. We have performed total energy calculations for different magnetic structures as a function of lattice distortions, related with various cell volumes and the Bain tetragonal deformations. The effective exchange parameters in {\gamma}-Fe are very sensitive to the lattice distortions, leading to the ferromagnetic ground state for the tetragonal deformation or increase of the volume cell. At the same time, the magnetic-structure-independent part of the total energy changes very slowly with the tetragonal deformations. The computational results demonstrate a strong mutual dependence of crystal and magnetic structures in Fe and explain the observable "anti-Invar" behavior of thermal expansion coefficient in {\gamma}-Fe., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Energetics of the fcc ($\gamma$) - bcc ($\alpha$) lattice transformation by the Bain tetragonal deformation is calculated for both magnetically ordered and paramagnetic (disordered local moment) states of iron. The first-principle computational results manifest a relevance of the magnetic order in a scenario of the $\gamma$ - $\alpha$ transition and reveal a special role of the Curie temperature of $\alpha$-Fe, $T_C$, where a character of the transformation is changed. At a cooling down to the temperatures $T < T_C$ one can expect that the transformation is developed as a lattice instability whereas for $T > T_C$ it follows a standard mechanism of creation and growth of an embryo of the new phase. Local perturbations of crystal and magnetic structure of $\gamma$-iron near carbon interstitial impurity is investigated by {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations. It is shown that the carbon impurity creates locally a region of ferromagnetic ordering with substantial tetragonal distortions. Exchange integrals and solution enthalpy are calculated, the latter being in a very good agreement with experimental data. Phase diagram and pattern formation in two-dimensional Ising model with coupling between order parameter and lattice vibrations is investigated by Monte-Carlo simulations. It is shown that if the coupling is strong enough (or phonons are soft enough) a short-range order exists in disordered phase for a broader temperature interval. Different types of this short-range order (stripe-like, checkboard-like, etc.) depending on the temperature and model parameters are investigated. A computer simulation of thermofluctuation nucleation of kinks on dislocations and their dynamics is carried out in the framework of two-dimensional (2D) Frenkel-Kontorova model. It is shown that at relatively low temperatures and applied stresses the kinks can appear as a result of developing instability of phonon modes localized in the vicinity of the dislocation. The transition from this mechanism to the ordinary thermofluctuation kink nucleation with temperature increase can reveal itself in the peculiarities of yield stress temperature dependence., Comment: REVTeX 4 style, 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. New aspects of a relation between lattice and dislocation structures are examined within a physically transparent theoretical scheme. Predicted features originating from the lattice discreteness include: (i) multiple core dislocation structures and (ii) their dependence on the position of the dislocation axis. These effects, which in principle can be observed directly and may also manifest themselves in dislocation motion or/and transformation (cross-slip) characteristics, are very general and present in any crystal in which they may be more or less pronounced depending on the material., Comment: 4 pages and 5 figures

The symmetry-induced magnetic anisotropy due to monoatomic steps at strained Ni films is determined using results of first - principles relativistic full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) calculations and an analogy with the N\'eel model. We show that there is a magnetoelastic anisotropy contribution to the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy in the vicinal plane of a stepped surface. In addition to the known spin-direction reorientation transition at a flat Ni/Cu(001) surface, we propose a spin-direction reorientation transition in the vicinal plane for a stepped Ni/Cu surface due to the magnetoelastic anisotropy. We show that with an increase of Ni film thickness, the magnetization in the vicinal plane turns perpendicular to the step edge at a critical thickness calculated to be in the range of 16-24 Ni layers for the Ni/Cu(1,1,13) stepped surface., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. We present a general scheme for analyzing the structure and mobility of dislocations based on solutions of the Peierls-Nabarro model with a two component displacement field and restoring forces determined from the ab-initio generalized stacking fault energetics (ie., the so-called $\gamma$-surface). The approach is used to investigate dislocations in L1$_{0}$ TiAl and CuAu; predicted differences in the unit dislocation properties are explicitly related with features of the $\gamma$-surface geometry. Numerical simulation of the dislocation motion in 2D Frenkel - Kontorova (FK) model in the thermostat shows an unusual dynamical behavior. It appears that ''kink'' regime of dislocation gliding takes place in a certain region of parameters of the model but, in disagreement with the common views about the dislocation motion under plastic deformation condition, the kinks appear to be similar to sine-Gordon solitons despite the discreteness of the lattice, damping and thermal fluctuations. To describe structural peculiarities in inhomogeneous media caused by the tendency to the close packing of atoms a formalism based on the using of the Riemann geometry methods (which were successfully applied lately to the description of structures of quasicrystals and glasses) is developed. Basing on this formalism we find in particular the criterion of stability of precipitates of the Frank-Kasper phases in metallic systems.
