The COVID-19 pandemic has by-and-large prevented in-person meetings since March 2020. While the increasing deployment of effective vaccines around the world is a very positive development, the timeline and pathway to "normality" is uncertain and the "new normal" we will settle into is anyone's guess. Particle physics, like many other scientific fields, has more than a year of experience in holding virtual meetings, workshops, and conferences. A great deal of experimentation and innovation to explore how to execute these meetings effectively has occurred. Therefore, it is an appropriate time to take stock of what we as a community learned from running virtual meetings and discuss possible strategies for the future. Continuing to develop effective strategies for meetings with a virtual component is likely to be important for reducing the carbon footprint of our research activities, while also enabling greater diversity and inclusion for participation. This report summarizes a virtual two-day workshop on Virtual Meetings held May 5-6, 2021 which brought together experts from both inside and outside of high-energy physics to share their experiences and practices with organizing and executing virtual workshops, and to develop possible strategies for future meetings as we begin to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. During the third long shutdown of the CERN Large Hadron Collider, the CMS Detector will undergo a major upgrade to prepare for Phase-2 of the CMS physics program, starting around 2026. The upgraded CMS detector will be read out at an unprecedented data rate of up to 50 Tb/s with an event rate of 750 kHz, selected by the level-1 hardware trigger, and an average event size of 7.4 MB. Complete events will be analyzed by the High-Level Trigger (HLT) using software algorithms running on standard processing nodes, potentially augmented with hardware accelerators. Selected events will be stored permanently at a rate of up to 7.5 kHz for offline processing and analysis. This paper presents the baseline design of the DAQ and HLT systems for Phase-2, taking into account the projected evolution of high speed network fabrics for event building and distribution, and the anticipated performance of general purpose CPU. In addition, some opportunities offered by reading out and processing parts of the detector data at the full LHC bunch crossing rate (40 MHz) are discussed.

This paper introduces a novel approach to the axiomatic theory of quadratic forms. We work internally in a category of certain partially ordered sets, subject to additional conditions which amount to a strong form of local presentability. We call such partial orders presentable. It turns out that the classical notion of the Witt ring of symmetric bilinear forms over a field makes sense in the context of quadratically presentable fields, that is fields equipped with a presentable partial order inequationaly compatible with the algebraic operations. As an application, we show that Witt rings of symmetric bilinear forms over fields, of both characteristic 2 and not 2, are isomorphic to Witt rings of suitably built quadratically presentable fields, which therefore provide a uniform construction of Witt rings for all characteristics.

Two fields are Witt equivalent if, roughly speaking, they have the same quadratic form theory. Formally, that is to say that their Witt rings of symmetric bilinear forms are isomorphic. This equivalence is well understood only in a few rather specific classes of fields. Two such classes, namely function fields over global fields and function fields of curves over local fields, were investigated by the authors in their earlier works. In the present work, which can be viewed as a sequel to the earlier papers, we discuss the previously obtained results in the specific case of function fields of conic sections, and apply them to provide a few theorems of a somewhat quantitive flavour shedding some light on the question of numbers of Witt non-equivalent classes of such fields., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1601.08085

Two fields are Witt equivalent if their Witt rings of symmetric bilinear forms are isomorphic. Witt equivalent fields can be understood to be fields having the same quadratic form theory. The behavior of finite fields, local fields, global fields, as well as function fields of curves defined over archimedean local fields under Witt equivalence is well-understood. Numbers of classes of Witt equivalent fields with finite numbers of square classes are also known in some cases. Witt equivalence of general function fields over global fields was studied in the earlier work [13] by the authors, and applied to study Witt equivalence of function fields of curves over global fields. In this paper we extend these results to local case, i.e. we discuss Witt equivalence of function fields of curves over local fields. As an application, we show that, modulo some additional assumptions, Witt equivalence of two such function fields implies Witt equivalence of underlying local fields., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1502.00830

In our work we investigate Witt equivalence of general function fields over global fields. It is proven that for any two such fields K and L the Witt equivalence induces a canonical bijection between Abhyankar valuations on K and L having residue fields not finite of characteristic 2. The main tool used in the proof is a method of constructing valuations due to Arason, Elman and Jacob. Numerous applications are provided, in particular to Witt equivalence of function fields over number fields: it is proven, among other things, that for two number fields k and l the Witt equivalence between the fields k(x_1,...,x_n) and l(x_1,...,x_n) implies that k and l are themselves Witt equivalent and have equal 2-ranks of their ideal class groups.

In our work we investigate quotient structures and quotient spaces of a space of orderings arising from subgroups of index two. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a quotient structure to be a quotient space that, among other things, depend on the stability index of the given space. The case of the space of orderings of the field Q(x) is particularly interesting, since then the theory developed simplifies significantly. A part of the theory firstly developed for quotients of index 2 generalizes in an elegant way to quotients of index 2^n for arbitrary finite n. Numerous examples are provided.

In this paper we present the following two results: we give an explicit description of the space of orderings of the field Q(x) as an inverse limit of finite spaces of orderings and we provide a new, simple proof of the fact that the class of spaces of orderings for which the pp conjecture holds true is closed under inverse limits. We discuss how these theorems interact with each other, and explain our motivation to look into these problems.
