We present the findings of a study based on a new inelastic electron-scattering experiment on the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}$ nucleus focusing on the kinematic region of $Q^2=0.8\,\mathrm{GeV}^2/{c}^2$. The measured cross section is sensitive to the transverse response function and provides a stringent test of theoretical models, as well as of the theoretical assumptions made in Monte-Carlo event-generator codes developed for the interpretation of neutrino-nucleus experiments, such as DUNE and HyperK. We find that modern generators such as GENIE and GiBUU reproduce our new experimental data within 10$\%$.

We present a global fit of neutral-current elastic (NCE) neutrino-scattering data and parity-violating electron-scattering (PVES) data with the goal of determining the strange quark contribution to the vector and axial form factors of the proton. Previous fits of this form included data from a variety of PVES experiments (PVA4, HAPPEx, G0, SAMPLE) and the NCE neutrino and anti-neutrino data from BNL E734. These fits did not constrain the strangeness contribution to the axial form factor $G_A^s(Q^2)$ at low $Q^2$ very well because there was no NCE data for $Q^2<0.45$ GeV$^2$. Our new fit includes for the first time MiniBooNE NCE data from both neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering; this experiment used a hydrocarbon target and so a model of the neutrino interaction with the carbon nucleus was required. Three different nuclear models have been employed: a relativistic Fermi gas model, the SuperScaling Approximation model, and a spectral function model. We find a tremendous improvement in the constraint of $G_A^s(Q^2)$ at low $Q^2$ compared to previous work, although more data is needed from NCE measurements that focus on exclusive single-proton final states, for example from MicroBooNE., Comment: Revised in light of referee comments; now accepted for publication in Physical Review D

The ratio of the transverse and longitudinal component of polarization transfer to protons in quasi-elastic $(\vec{e}, e^{\prime} \vec{p}\,)$ reaction, $P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z$, is sensitive to the proton's electromagnetic form factor ratio, $G_E/G_M$. To explore density-dependent in-medium modifications, a comparison of polarization transfer ratios involving protons from distinct nuclear shells, each with different local nuclear densities, has been proposed. In this study, we present such comparisons between four shells, $1s_{1/2}$, $1p_{3/2}$ in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ and $1d_{3/2}$, $2s_{1/2}$ in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$. In an effort to account for other many-body effects that may differ between shells, we use state-of-the-art relativistic distorted-wave impulse-approximation (RDWIA) calculation and present the double ratios, $(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm Data}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm RDWIA}$ as well as the super ratios, $\left[(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm A}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm B}\right]_{\rm Data}/\left[(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm A}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm B}\right]_{\rm RDWIA}$, for chosen shells A and B, as a function of effective local nuclear densities. We find that double ratios for individual shells show a dependence on the probed effective nuclear densities. Studying the ratios, we observed a systematic variation between pairs of higher- and lower-density shells.

Polarization transfer to a bound proton in polarized electron knock-out reactions, $\mathrm{A}(\vec{e},e^{\prime}\vec{p})$, is a powerful tool to look for in-medium modification of the bound proton. It requires comparison to calculations which consider the many-body effects accompanying the quasi-free process. We report here measured components $P_x^{\prime}$, $P_z^{\prime}$, and their ratio $P_x^{\prime}/P_z^{\prime}$, of polarization transfer to protons bound in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$, which is described well by the shell model and for which reliable calculations are available. While the calculations capture the essence of the data, our statistical precision allows us to observe deviations which cannot be explained by simple scaling, including by varying the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio $G_E/G_M$. We further explore the deviations of the ratio of the polarization transfer components from that of a free proton, $(P_x^{\prime}/P_z^{\prime})_{\rm A}/(P_x^{\prime}/P_z^{\prime})_{\rm H}$, and its dependence on the bound-proton virtuality.

Few years ago we started the investigation of microscopic Optical Potentials (OP) in the framework of chiral effective field theories and published our results in a series of manuscripts. Starting from the very first work, where a microscopic OP was introduced following the multiple scattering procedure of Watson, and then followed by more recent works, where the agreement with experimental data and phenomenological approaches was successfully tested, we finally arrived at a description of elastic scattering processes off non-zero spin nuclei. Among our achievements, it is worth mentioning the partial inclusion of three-nucleon forces, and the extension of our OP to antiproton-nucleus elastic scattering. Despite the overall good agreement with empirical data obtained so far, we do believe that several improvements and upgrades of the present approach are still to be achieved. The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has measured the (e,e'p) cross section in parallel kinematics using a natural titanium target. Here, we report the full results of the analysis of the data set corresponding to beam energy 2.2 GeV, and spanning the missing momentum and missing energy range 15 <= pm <= 250 MeV/c and 12 <= Em <= 80 MeV. The reduced cross section has been measured with ~7% accuracy as function of both missing momentum and missing energy. We compared our data to the results of a Monte Carlo simulations performed using a model spectral function and including the effects of final state interactions. Maximizing the discovery potential of increasingly precise neutrino experiments will require an improved theoretical understanding of neutrino-nucleus cross sections over a wide range of energies. Low-energy interactions are needed to reconstruct the energies of astrophysical neutrinos from supernovae bursts and search for new physics using increasingly precise measurement of coherent elastic neutrino scattering. Higher-energy interactions involve a variety of reaction mechanisms including quasi-elastic scattering, resonance production, and deep inelastic scattering that must all be included to reliably predict cross sections for energies relevant to DUNE and other accelerator neutrino experiments. The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has measured the $(e, e'p)$ cross section in parallel kinematics using a natural argon target. Here, we report the full results of the analysis of the data set corresponding to beam energy 2.222 GeV, and spanning the missing momentum and missing energy range $15 \lesssim p_m \lesssim 300$ MeV/c and $12 \lesssim E_m \lesssim 80$ MeV. The reduced cross section, determined as a function of $p_m$ and $E_m$ with $\approx$4\% accuracy, has been fitted using the results of Monte Carlo simulations involving a model spectral function and including the effects of final state interactions. The overall agreement between data and simulations turns out to be quite satisfactory ($\chi^2$/n.d.o.f.=1.9). The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has collected exclusive electron-scattering data (e,e$^\prime$p) in parallel kinematics using natural argon and natural titanium targets. Here, we report the first results of the analysis of the data set corresponding to beam energy of 2,222 MeV, electron scattering angle 21.5 deg, and proton emission angle -50 deg. We present first measurements of the double ratio of the polarization transfer components $(P^{\prime}_{\!x} \!/ P^{\prime}_{\!z} )_p/ (P^{\prime}_{\!x} \!/ P^{\prime}_{\!z} )_s$ for knock-out protons from $s$ and $p$ shells in $^{12}{\rm C}$ measured by the $^{12}{\rm C}(\vec{e},{e}'\vec{p}\,)$ reaction in quasi-elastic kinematics. The data are compared to theoretical predictions in relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation. Our results show that differences between $s$- and $p$-shell protons, observed when compared at the same initial momentum (missing momentum) largely disappear when the comparison is done at the same proton virtuality. We observe no density-dependent medium modifications for protons from $s$ and $p$ shells with the same virtuality in spite of the large differences in the respective nuclear densities.

A microscopic optical potential (OP) is derived from NN chiral potentials at the first-order term within the spectator expansion of the multiple scattering theory and adopting the impulse approximation. The performances of our OP are compared with those of a phenomenological OP in the description of elastic proton scattering data on different isotopic chains. An analogous scheme is adopted to construct a microscopic OP for elastic antiproton-nucleus scattering. The E12-14-012 experiment performed at Jefferson Lab Hall A has collected inclusive electron-scattering data for different targets at the kinematics corresponding to beam energy 2.222 GeV and scattering angle 15.54 deg. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of the collected data and compare the double-differential cross sections for inclusive scattering of electrons, extracted using solid targets (aluminum, carbon, and titanium) and a closed argon-gas cell. The data extend over broad range of energy transfer, where quasielastic interaction, Delta-resonance excitation, and inelastic scattering yield contributions to the cross section. The success of the ambitious programs of both long- and short-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiments employing liquid-argon time-projection chambers will greatly rely on the precision with which the weak response of the argon nucleus can be estimated. In the E12-14-012 experiment at Jefferson Lab Hall A, we have studied the properties of the argon nucleus by scattering a high-quality electron beam off a high-pressure gaseous argon target. Here, we present the measured $^{40}$Ar$(e,e^{\prime})$ double differential cross section at incident electron energy $E=2.222$~GeV and scattering angle $\theta = 15.541^\circ$. The data cover a broad range of energy transfers, where quasielastic scattering and delta production are the dominant reaction mechanisms. To probe CP violation in the leptonic sector using GeV energy neutrino beams in current and future experiments using argon detectors, precise models of the complex underlying neutrino and antineutrino interactions are needed. The E12-14-012 experiment at Jefferson Lab Hall A was designed to perform a combined analysis of inclusive and exclusive electron scatterings on both argon ($N = 22$) and titanium ($Z = 22$) nuclei using GeV energy electron beams. The measurement on titanium nucleus provides essential information to understand the neutrino scattering on argon, large contribution to which comes from scattering off neutrons. Here we report the first experimental study of electron-titanium scattering as double differential cross section at beam energy $E=2.222$ GeV and electron scattering angle $\theta = 15.541$ deg, measured over a broad range of energy transfer, spanning the kinematical regions in which quasielastic scattering and delta production are the dominant reaction mechanisms. Background: Elastic scattering is probably the main event in the interactions of nucleons with nuclei. Even if this process has been extensively studied in the last years, a consistent description, i.e., starting from microscopic two- and many-body forces connected by the same symmetries and principles, is still under development. Purpose: In a previous paper we derived a theoretical optical potential from NN chiral potentials at fourth order (N3LO). In the present work we use NN chiral potentials at fifth order (N4LO), with the purpose to check the convergence and to assess the theoretical errors associated with the truncation of the chiral expansion in the construction of an optical potential. Methods: The optical potential is derived as the first-order term within the spectator expansion of the nonrelativistic multiple scattering theory and adopting the impulse approximation and the optimum factorization approximation. Results: The pp and np Wolfenstein amplitudes and the cross section, analyzing power, and spin rotation of elastic proton scattering from 16O, 12C, and 40Ca nuclei are presented at an incident proton energy of 200 MeV. The results obtained with different versions of chiral potentials at N4LO are compared. Conclusions: Our results indicate that convergence has been reached at N4LO. The agreement with the experimental data is comparable with the agreement obtained in our previous work. Background: Elastic scattering is probably the main event in the interactions of nucleons with nuclei. Purpose: In this work we study the domain of applicability of microscopic two-body chiral potentials in the construction of an optical potential. Methods: We basically follow the KMT approach to build a microscopic complex optical potential and then we perform some test calculations on 16O at different energies. Results: Our conclusion is that a particular set of potentials with a Lippmann-Schwinger cutoff at relatively high energies (above 500 MeV) has the best performances reproducing the scattering observables. Conclusions: Our work shows that building an optical potential within Chiral Perturbation Theory is a promising approach to the description of elastic proton scattering, in particular, in view of the future inclusion of many-body forces that naturally arise in such framework., Comment: 15 pages and 12 figures. Neutral current quasielastic (anti)neutrino scattering cross sections on a $^{12}$C target are analyzed using a realistic spectral function $S(p,E)$ that gives a scaling function in accordance with the ($e,e'$) scattering data. The spectral function accounts for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) correlations by using natural orbitals (NOs) from the Jastrow correlation method and has a realistic energy dependence. The standard value of the axial mass $M_A= 1.032$ GeV is used in all calculations. The role of the final-state interaction (FSI) on the spectral and scaling functions, as well as on the cross sections is accounted for. A comparison of the calculations with the empirical data of the MiniBooNE and BNL experiments is performed. Our results are analyzed in comparison with those when NN correlations are not included, and also with results from other theoretical approaches, such as the relativistic Fermi gas (RFG), the relativistic mean field (RMF), the relativistic Green's function (RGF), as well as with the SuperScaling Approach (SuSA) based on the analysis of quasielastic electron scattering., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

The interpretation of the signals detected by high precision experiments aimed at measuring neutrino oscillations requires an accurate description of the neutrino-nucleus cross sections. One of the key element of the analysis is the treatment of nuclear effects, which is one of the main sources of systematics for accelerator based experiments such as the Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE). A considerable effort is currently being made to develop theoretical models capable of providing a fully quantitative description of the neutrino-nucleus cross sections in the kinematical regime relevant to LBNE. The approach based on nuclear many-body theory and the spectral function formalism has proved very successful in explaining the available electron scattering data in a variety of kinematical conditions. The first step towards its application to the analysis of neutrino data is the derivation of the spectral functions of nuclei employed in neutrino detectors, in particular argon. We propose a measurement of the coincidence $(e,e^\prime p)$ cross section on argon. This data will provide the experimental input indispensable to construct the argon spectral function, thus paving the way for a reliable estimate of the neutrino cross sections. We study the predictions of three mean-field theoretical approaches in the description of the ground state properties of some spherical nuclei far from the stability line. We compare binding energies, single particle spectra, density distributions, charge and neutron radii obtained with non-relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations carried out with both zero and finite-range interactions, and with a relativistic Hartree approach which uses a finite-range interaction. The agreement between the results obtained with the three different approaches indicates that these results are more related to the basic hypotheses of the mean-field approach rather than to its implementation in actual calculations., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

We study the evolution of the \eep cross section on nuclei with increasing asymmetry between the number of neutrons and protons. The calculations are done within the framework of the nonrelativistic and relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation. In the nonrelativistic model phenomenological Woods-Saxon and Hartree-Fock wave functions are used for the proton bound-state wave functions, in the relativistic model the wave functions are solutions of Dirac-Hartree equations. The results of two relativistic models with different descriptions of the final-state interactions are compared with the MiniBooNE data of charged-current quasielastic cross sections. The relativistic mean field model uses the same potential for the bound and ejected nucleon wave functions. In the relativistic Green's function (RGF) model the final-state interactions are described in the inclusive scattering consistently with the exclusive scattering using the same complex optical potential. We study the evolution of the (e,e'p) cross section on nuclei with increasing asymmetry between the number of neutrons and protons. The calculations are done within the framework of the distorted-wave impulse approximation, by adopting nonrelativistic and relativistic models. We compare the results obtained with three different approaches based on the mean-field description for the proton bound state wave function. The analysis of the recent experimental data on charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections measured at MiniBooNE requires fully relativistic theoretical descriptions also accounting for the role of final state interactions. In this work we evaluate inclusive quasielastic differential neutrino cross sections within the framework of the relativistic impulse approximation. Results based on the relativistic mean field potential are compared with the ones corresponding to the relativistic Green function approach. We review some applications of self-consistent Green's function theory to studies of one- and two-nucleon structure in finite nuclei. Large-scale microscopic calculations that employ realistic nuclear forces are now possible. Effects of long-range correlations are seen to play a dominant role in determining the quenching of absolute spectroscopic factors. After recent improvements to the Pavia model of two-nucleon knockout from $^{16}$O with electromagnetic probes the calculated cross sections are compared to experimental data from such reactions. Comparison with data from a measurement of the $^{16}$O(e,e$'$pn) reaction show much better agreement between experiment and theory than was previously observed. Recent advances in the description of electromagnetic two-nucleon knockout reactions are reviewed. The sensitivity to different types of correlations and to their treatment in the nuclear wave functions, the effects of final-state interactions and the role of center-of-mass effects in connection with the problem of the lack of orthogonality between initial bound states and final scattering states obtained by the use of an energy-dependent optical-model potential are discussed. This paper reports on the first measurement of the ^16O(e,e'pn)^14N reaction. Data were measured in kinematics centred on a super-parallel geometry at energy and momentum transfers of 215 MeV and 316 MeV/c. The experimental resolution was sufficient to distinguish groups of states in the residual nucleus but not good enough to separate individual states. The data show a strong dependence on missing momentum and this dependence appears to be different for two groups of states in the residual nucleus. The treatment of the $\Delta$-current and its contribution in the exclusive $^{16}$O$(e,e'pp)^{14}$C and $^{16}$O$(\gamma,pp)^{14}$C knockout reactions are investigated in combination with the effects of correlations. Different parametrizations of the effective $\Delta$-current and different treatments of correlations in the two-nucleon overlap function are considered. The results are presented and discussed for a suitable choice of kinematics. A completely antisymmetrized Green's function approach to the inclusive quasielastic $(e,e')$ scattering, including a realistic one-body density, is presented. The single particle Green's function is expanded in terms of the eigenfunctions of the nonhermitian optical potential. This allows one to treat final state interactions consistently in the inclusive and in the exclusive reactions. Nuclear correlations are included in the one-body density. Calculations of the $^{16}$O$(e,e'pN)$ cross sections to the ground state and first excited levels of the $^{14}$C and $^{14}$N nuclei are presented. The effects of nuclear fragmentation have been obtained in a self-consistent approach and are accounted for in the determination of the two-nucleon removal amplitudes. The Hilbert space is partitioned in order to compute the contribution of both long- and short-range effects in a separate way. Both the two-proton and the proton-neutron emission cross sections have been computed within the same models for the reaction mechanism and the contribution from nuclear structure, with the aim of better comparing the differences between the two physical processes. The $^{16}$O$(e,e'pp)$ reaction is found to be sensitive to short-range correlations, in agreement with previous results. The $^{16}$O$(e,e'pn)$ cross section to $1^+$ final states is dominated by the $\Delta$ current and tensor correlations. For both reactions, the interplay between collective (long-range) effects and short-range and tensor correlations plays an important role. This suggests that the selectivity of $(e,e'pN)$ reactions to the final state can be used to probe correlations also beyond short-range effects., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Using the relationship between the two-particle overlap functions (TOF's) and the two-body density matrix (TDM), the TOF's for $^{16}$O$(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}$C reaction are calculated on the basis of TDM obtained with a Jastrow-type approach. The main contributions of the removal of $^1S$ and $^3P$ $pp$-pairs from $^{16}$O are taken into account in the calculations of the cross sections of the $^{16}$O$(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}$C reaction using the Jastrow TOF's. The contributions of the one-body and two-body delta currents are considered. Studies of one-body density matrices (ODM) are performed in various correlation methods, such as the Jastrow method, the correlated basis function method, the Green's function method and the generator coordinate method aiming to extract the absolute spectroscopic factors and overlap functions (OF) for one-nucleon removal reactions from the ODM of the target nucleus. The advantage of this method is that it avoids the complicated task of calculating the total nuclear spectral function. The procedure for extracting bound-state OF's has been applied to make calculations of the cross sections of the $(e,e^{\prime}p)$ reaction on the closed-shell nuclei $^{16}$O and $^{40}$Ca as well as on the open-shell nucleus $^{32}$S consistently (using the same OF's) with the cross sections of $(p,d)$ and $(\gamma,p)$ reactions on the same nuclei. The analyses of the reaction cross sections and the spectroscopic factors and the comparison with the experimental data show the particular importance of these OF's, since they contain effects of nucleon correlations (short-range and/or long-range) which are accounted for to different extent in the theoretical methods considered., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Presented by A.N. A Green's function approach to the inclusive quasielastic ($e,e'$) scattering is presented. The components of the nuclear response are written in terms of the single-particle optical model Green's function. The explicit calculation of the Green's function can be avoided by its spectral representation, which is based on a biorthogonal expansion in terms of the eigenfunctions of the non-Hermitian optical potential and of its Hermitian conjugate. This allows one to treat final state interactions consistently in the inclusive ($e,e'$) and in the exclusive ($e,e'N$) reactions. After a brief overview of relevant studies on one-nucleon knockout showing the importance of quantitatively understanding the origin of the quenched spectroscopic factors extracted from data, attention is focussed on two-nucleon emission as a suitable tool to investigate nucleon-nucleon correlations inside complex nuclei. In particular, direct (e,e$'$pp) and (e,e$'$pn) reactions are discussed, and the role of final-state interactions is studied. The role of meson exchange currents (MEC) in electron- and photon-induced one-nucleon emission processes is studied in a nonrelativistic model including correlations and final state interactions. The nuclear current is the sum of a one-body and of a two-body part. The two-body current includes pion seagull, pion-in-flight and the isobar current contributions. Numerical results are presented for the exclusive 16O(e,e'p)15N and 16O(\gamma,p)15N reactions. MEC effects are in general rather small in (e,e'p), while in (\gamma,p) they are always large and important to obtain a consistent description of (e,e'p) and (\gamma,p) data, with the same spectroscopic factors. The calculated (\gamma,p) cross sections are sensitive to short-range correlations at high values of the recoil momentum, where MEC effects are larger and overwhelm the contribution of correlations., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Single-particle overlap functions and spectroscopic factors are calculated on the basis of Jastrow-type one-body density matrices of open-shell nuclei constructed by using a factor cluster expansion. The calculations use the relationship between the overlap functions corresponding to bound states of the $(A-1)$-particle system and the one-body density matrix for the ground state of the $A$-particle system. In this work we extend our previous analyses of reactions on closed-shell nuclei by using the resulting overlap functions for the description of the cross sections of $(p,d)$ reactions on the open $s$-$d$ shell nuclei $^{24}$Mg, $^{28}$Si and $^{32}$S and of $^{32}$S$(e,e^{\prime}p)$ reaction. The relative role of both shell structure and short-range correlations incorporated in the correlation approach on the spectroscopic factors and the reaction cross sections is pointed out., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. The attempts to investigate correlations in electromagnetically induced one- and two-nucleon knockout are reviewed. The theoretical framework for cross section calculations is outlined and some results are presented for the exclusive $^{16}$O($e,e'p)^{15}$N and $^{16}$O($e,e'pp)^{14}$C reactions. For the ($e,e'p$) reaction attention is focussed on extracting the spectroscopic factors. We develop a fully relativistic DWIA model for photonuclear reactions using the relativistic mean field theory for the bound state and the Pauli reduction of the scattering state which is calculated from a relativistic optical potential. Results for the 12C(gamma,p) and 16O(gamma,p) differential cross sections and photon asymmetries are displayed in a photon energy range between 60 and 257 MeV, and compared with nonrelativistic DWIA calculations. The effects of the spinor distortion and of the effective momentum approximation for the scattering state are discussed. The sensitivity of the model to different prescriptions for the one-body current operator is investigated. The formalism of (${\vec \gamma},{\vec N}N$) reactions is given where the incident photon is polarized and the outgoing nucleon polarization is detected. Sixteen structure functions and fifteen polarization observables are found in the general case, while only eight structure functions and seven polarizations observables survive in coplanar kinematics. Numerical examples are presented for the $^{16}$O($\gamma,pn$) and $^{16}$O($\gamma,pp$) reactions. The transitions to the ground state of $^{14}$C and $^{14}$N are calculated in a model where realistic short-range and tensor correlations are taken into account for the $pn$ pair, while short-range and long-range correlations are included in a consistent way for $pp$ pairs. The effects of the one-body and two-body components of the nuclear current and the role of correlations in cross sections and polarizations are studied and discussed., Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures (eps). A consistent comparison between nonrelativistic and relativistic descriptions of the (e,e'p) reaction is presented. We use the nonrelativistic DWEEPY code and develop a fully relativistic model starting from the effective Pauli reduction for the scattering state and the relativistic mean field theory for the bound state. Results for the 16O(e,e'p) differential cross section and structure functions are compared in various kinematical conditions. A limit in energy of the validity of the nonrelativistic approach is established. The effects of spinor distortion and of the effective momentum approximation for the scattering state are discussed. An approach to the Generator Coordinate Method (GCM) using Skyrme-type effective forces and Woods-Saxon construction potential is applied to calculate the single-particle proton and neutron overlap functions in $^{40}$Ca. The relationship between the bound-state overlap functions and the one-body density matrix has been used. These overlap functions are applied to calculate the cross sections of one-nucleon removal reactions such as ($e,e'p$), ($\gamma,p$) and ($p,d$) on $^{40}$Ca on the same theoretical footing. A consistent description of data for the different reactions is achieved. The shapes of the experimental cross sections for transitions to the $3/2^{+}$ ground state and the first $1/2^{+}$ excited state of the residual nuclei are well reproduced by the overlap functions obtained within the GCM. An additional spectroscopic factor accounting for correlations not included in the overlap function must be applied to the calculated results to reproduce the size of the experimental cross sections., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Phys.
