We present an updated catalog of sources detected by the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope aboard the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory during its all-sky survey. It is based on the data of the first four and the partially completed fifth scans of the sky (ARTSS1-5). The catalog comprises 1545 sources detected in the 4-12 keV energy band. The achieved sensitivity ranges between $\sim 4\times 10^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ near the ecliptic plane and $\sim 7\times 10^{-13}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ near the ecliptic poles, which is a $\sim$30-50% improvement over the previous version of the catalog based on the first two all-sky scans (ARTSS12). There are $\sim 130$ objects, excluding the expected contribution of spurious detections, that were not known as X-ray sources before the SRG/ART-XC all-sky survey. We provide information, partly based on our ongoing follow-up optical spectroscopy program, on the identification and classification of the majority of the ARTSS1-5 sources (1463), of which 173 are tentative at the moment. The majority of the classified objects (964) are extragalactic, a small fraction (30) are located in the Local Group of galaxies, and 469 are Galactic. Dark matter sterile neutrinos radiatively decay in the Milky Way, which can be tested with searches for almost monochromatic photons in the X-ray cosmic spectrum. We analyse the data of SRG/ART-XC telescope operated for two years in the all-sky survey mode. With no significant hints in the Galactic diffuse X-ray spectrum we explore models with sterile neutrino masses in 12-40 keV range and exclude corresponding regions of sterile-active neutrino mixing., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. We report the discovery of the bright reflected emission component in the super-Eddington state of the ULX pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124, based on the NuSTAR observations of the source during its 2017 outburst. The flux of the reflected emission is weakly variable over the pulsar phase while the direct emission shows significantly larger pulsation amplitude. We propose that in this system the neutron star finds itself in the centre of the well formed by the inner edge of the geometrically thick super-Eddington accretion disc truncated by the magnetic field of the pulsar. The aspect ratio of the well is H/R \sim 1. The inner edge of the truncated disc is continuously illuminated by the emission of the accretion column giving rise to the weakly variable reflected emission. As the neutron star rotates, its emission sweeps through the line of sight, giving rise to the pulsating direct emission. From Doppler broadening of the iron line, we measure the truncation radius of the accretion disc \sim 50 R_g. The inferred dipole component of the magnetic field is consistent with previous estimates favouring a not very strong field. The uniqueness of this system is determined by its moderately super-Eddington accretion rate and the moderate magnetic field so that the inner edge of the truncated geometrically thick accretion disc is seen from the neutron star at a large solid angle., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. We present a first catalog of sources detected by the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope on board the SRG observatory in the 4-12 keV energy band during its ongoing all-sky survey. The catalog comprises 867 sources detected on the combined map of the first two 6-month scans of the sky (December 2019 - December 2020). The achieved sensitivity to point sources varies between ~4x10^-12 erg/s/cm2 near the ecliptic plane and ~8x10^-13 erg/s/cm2 (4-12 keV) near the ecliptic poles, and the typical localization accuracy is ~15 arcsec. Of the 750 sources of known or suspected origin in the catalog, 56% are extragalactic (mostly active galactic nuclei, AGN; and clusters of galaxies) and the rest are Galactic (mostly cataclysmic variables, CVs; and low- and high-mass X-ray binaries). For 114 sources, ART-XC has detected X-rays for the first time. Although the majority of these (~80) are expected to be spurious (given the adopted detection threshold), there can be a significant number of newly discovered astrophysical objects. We have started a program of optical follow-up observations of the new and previously unidentified X-ray sources, which has already led to the identification of several AGN and CVs. The Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory is currently conducting its 4-year all-sky X-ray survey, started on December 12, 2019. The survey is periodically interrupted for technological operations with the spacecraft. These time intervals are usually used by the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope to perform calibrations. In this context, SRG carried out scanning observations of the Puppis A supernova remnant (SNR) with the aim to check the imaging performance of ART-XC and to optimize the technique of image reconstruction for extended objects. Using the unique imaging capabilities of ART-XC and its uniform coverage of the entire Puppis A region, we attempted to investigate the morphology of this SNR at energies >4 keV, and to search for previously unknown X-ray sources. Puppis A was observed in 2019-2020, conducting 1.5 x 1.5 degrees shallow surveys with an exposure of 36 hours. Additional deep pointed observations of the central part of Puppis A were carried out in 2021 lasted 31 hours to highlight the morphology of the extended emission. The X-ray emission of the Puppis A was significantly detected as an extended structure in the 4-6 keV energy band. The morphology of the emission is in general agreement with that observed in soft X-rays previously. The deep sky image of Puppis A obtained with the ART-XC telescope is characterized by a typical SNR shell rim morphology, an extended emission and a bright emission knot in the north-eastern part of the supernova shell. We present results of phase- and time-resolved study of iron spectral features in the emission of the Be/X-ray transient pulsar V0332+53, during its type II outburst in 2004 using archival RXTE/PCA data. Coherent pulsations of both fluorescent iron line at {\approx}6.4 keV and neutral iron K-edge at {\approx}7.1 keV have been detected throughout the entire outburst. The pulsating iron K-edge is reported for the first time for this object. Near the peak of the outburst, the 3-12 keV pulse profile shows two deep, F_max / F_min ~ 2, and narrow dips of nearly identical shape, separated by exactly {\Delta}{\phi}=0.5 in phase. The dip spectra are nearly identical to each other and very similar in shape to the spectra outside the dips. The iron K-edge peaks at the phase intervals corresponding to the dips, although its optical depth {\tau}_K ~ 0.05 is by far insufficient to explain the dips. The iron line shows pulsations with a complex pulse profile without any obvious correlation with the total flux or optical depth of the K-edge. Accounting for the component associated with reprocessing of the pulsar emission by the surface of the donor star and circumstellar material, we find a very high pulsation amplitude of the iron line flux, F_max / F_min ~ 10. We demonstrate that these properties of V0332+53 can not be explained by contemporary emission models for accreting X-ray pulsars and speculate about the origin of the observed iron spectral features., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures. We present the results of our identification of eight objects from a preliminary catalogue of X-ray sources detected in the 4-12 keV energy band by the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope aboard the SRG observatory during its first all-sky survey. Three of them (SRGAJ005751.0+210846,SRGAJ014157.0-032915, SRGAJ232446.8+440756) have been discovered by ART-XC, while five were already known previously as X-ray sources, but their nature remained unknown. The last five sources have also been detected in soft X-rays by the eROSITA telescope of the SRG observatory. Our optical observations were carried out at the 1.6-m AZT-33IK telescope of the Sayan Observatory and the 1.5-m Russian-Turkish telescope (RTT-150). All of the investigated objects have turned out to be active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at redshifts from 0.019 to 0.283. Six of them are Seyfert 2 galaxies(including one Seyfert 1.9 galaxy), one (SRGAJ005751.0+210846) is a "hidden" AGN (in an edge-on galaxy), and one (SRGAJ224125.9+760343) is a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy. The latter object is characterized by a high X-ray luminosity (~(2-13)*10^44 erg/s in the 4-12 keV band) and,according to our black hole mass estimate (~2*10^7 M_sun), an accretion rate close to the Eddington limit. All three AGNs discovered by the ART-XC telescope (which are not detected by the eROSITA telescope) are characterized by a high absorption column density (N_H > 3*10^23 cm^-2). The results obtained confirm the expectations that the ART-XC telescope is an efficient instrument for searches of heavily obscured and other interesting AGNs in the nearby (z<0.3) Universe. The SRG all-sky survey will last for more than 3 years more, which will allow many such objects to be discovered.

ART-XC (Astronomical Roentgen Telescope - X-ray Concentrator) is the hard X-ray instrument with grazing incidence imaging optics on board the Spektr-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory. The SRG observatory is the flagship astrophysical mission of the Russian Federal Space Program, which was successively launched into orbit around the second Lagrangian point (L2) of the Earth-Sun system with a Proton rocket from the Baikonur cosmodrome on 13 July 2019. The ART-XC telescope will provide the first ever true imaging all-sky survey performed with grazing incidence optics in the 4-30 keV energy band and will obtain the deepest and sharpest map of the sky in the energy range of 4-12 keV. Observations performed during the early calibration and performance verification phase as well as during the on-going all-sky survey that started on 12 Dec. 2019 have demonstrated that the in-flight characteristics of the ART-XC telescope are very close to expectations based on the results of ground calibrations. Upon completion of its 4-year all-sky survey, ART-XC is expected to detect ~5000 sources (~3000 active galactic nuclei, including heavily obscured ones, several hundred clusters of galaxies, ~1000 cataclysmic variables and other Galactic sources), and to provide a high-quality map of the Galactic background emission in the 4-12 keV energy band. ART-XC is also well suited for discovering transient X-ray sources. The dependence of the spin frequency derivative $\dot{\nu}$ of accreting neutron stars with a strong magnetic field (X-ray pulsars) on the mass accretion rate (bolometric luminosity, $L_{bol}$) has been investigated for eight transient pulsars in binary systems with Be stars. Using data from the Fermi/GBM and Swift/BAT telescopes, we have shown that for seven of the eight systems the dependence $\dot{\nu}$ can be fitted by the model of angular momentum transfer through an accretion disk, which predicts the relation $\dot{\nu}\sim L^{6/7}_{bol}$. Hysteresis in the dependence $\dot{\nu}(L_{bol})$ has been confirmed in the system V 0332+53 and has been detected for the first time in the systems KS 1947+300, GRO J1008-57, and 1A 0535+26. The radius of the neutron star magnetosphere in all of the investigated systems have been estimated. The Astronomical Roentgen Telescope X-ray Concentrator (ART-XC) is a hard X-ray telescope with energy response up to 30 keV, to be launched on board the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) spacecraft in 2018. ART-XC consists of seven identical co-aligned mirror modules. Each mirror assembly is coupled with a CdTe double-sided strip (DSS) focal-plane detector. Eight X-ray mirror modules (seven flight and one spare units) for ART-XC were developed and fabricated at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), NASA, USA. We present results of testing procedures performed with an X-ray beam facility at MSFC to calibrate the point spread function (PSF) of the mirror modules. The shape of the PSF was measured with a high-resolution CCD camera installed in the focal plane with defocusing of 7 mm, as required by the ART-XC design. For each module, we performed a parametrization of the PSF at various angular distances Theta. We used a King function to approximate the radial profile of the near on-axis PSF (Theta<9 arcmin) and an ellipse fitting procedure to describe the morphology of the far off-axis angular response (9

During the scanning observations of the Galactic Center region in August - September 2016 we detected the new outburst of the historical X-ray nova GRS 1739-278, the black hole candidate LMXB system. In this letter we present results of INTEGRAL and Swift-XRT observations taken during the outburst. In hard X-ray band (20-60 keV) the flux from the source raised from $\sim$11 to $\sim$30 mCrab between 3 and 14 of September. For nearly 8 days the source has been observed at this flux level and then faded to $\sim$15 mCrab. The broadband quasi-simultaneous spectrum obtained during the outburst is well described by the absorbed powerlaw with the photon index $\Gamma=1.86\pm0.07$ in broad energy range 0.5-150 keV, with absorption corresponding to ${N_{H}}=2.3\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ assuming solar abundance. Based on this we can conclude that the source was in the low/hard state. From the lightcurve and spectra we propose that this outburst was `failed', i.e. amount of accreted matter was not sufficient to achieve the high/soft spectral state with dominant soft blackbody component as seen in normal outbursts of black hole candidates., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy Letters, 2017, 43, 3

We investigate the relation between the optical (g-band) and X-ray (0.5-10 keV) luminosities of accreting nonmagnetic white dwarfs. According to the present-day counts of the populations of star systems in our Galaxy, these systems have the highest space density among the close binary systems with white dwarfs. We show that the dependence of the optical luminosity of accreting white dwarfs on their X-ray luminosity forms a fairly narrow one-parameter curve. The typical half-width of this curve does not exceed 0.2-0.3 dex in optical and X-ray luminosities, which is essentially consistent with the amplitude of the aperiodic flux variability for these objects. At X-ray luminosities Lx~1e32 erg/sec or lower, the optical g-band luminosity of the accretion flow is shown to be related to its X-ray luminosity by a factor ~2-3. At even lower X-ray luminosities (Lx~1e30 erg/sec), the contribution from the photosphere of the white dwarf begins to dominate in the optical spectrum of the binary system and its optical brightness does not drop below Mg~13-14. Using the latter fact, we show that in current and planned X-ray sky surveys, the family of accreting nonmagnetic white dwarfs can be completely identified to the distance determined by the sensitivity of an optical sky survey in this region. In this paper we report on the observations performed with INTEGRAL and Swift of the first outburst detected from the hard X-ray transient MAXI J1828-249. During the first about two days of the outburst, the source was observed by MAXI to undergo a very rapid transition from a hard to a softer spectral state. While the hard state was not efficiently monitored because the transition occurred so rapidly, the evolution of the source outburst in the softer state was covered quasi-simultaneously in a broad energy range (0.6-150 keV) by the instruments on-board INTEGRAL and Swift. During these observations, the spectra measured from the source displayed both a prominent thermal emission with temperature kT 0.7 keV and a power-law hard component with a photon index gamma 2.2 extending to 200 keV. The properties of the source in the X-ray domain are reminiscent of those displayed by black hole transients during the soft intermediate state, which supports the association of MAXI J1828-249 with this class of objects., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. In this paper we propose and examine a physical mechanism which can lead to the generation of noise in the mass accretion rate of low mass X-ray binaries on time-scales comparable to the orbital period of the system. We consider modulations of mass captured by the compact object from the companion star's stellar wind in binaries with late type giants, systems which usually have long orbital periods. We show that a hydrodynamical interaction of the wind matter within a binary system even without eccentricity results in variability of the mass accretion rate with characteristic time-scales close to the orbital period. The cause of the variability is an undeveloped turbulent motion (perturbed motion without significant vorticity) of wind matter near the compact object. Our conclusions are supported by 3D simulations with two different hydrodynamic codes based on Lagrangian and Eulerian approaches -- the SPH code GADGET and the Eulerian code PLUTO. In this work we assume that the wind mass loss rate of the secondary is at the level of $(0.5-1)\times10^{-7} M_\odot$/year, required to produce observable variations of the mass accretion rate on the primary. This value is higher than that, estimated for single giant stars of this type, but examples of even higher mass loss rate of late type giants in binaries do exist. Our simulations show that the stellar wind matter intercepted by the compact object might create observational appearances similar to that of an accretion disc corona/wind and could be detected via high energy resolution observations of X-ray absorption lines, in particular, highly ionized ions of heavy elements., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

Based on the model of interaction between spherically symmetrical expanding matter and the external medium, we have estimated the parameters of the matter heated by the shock that was produced in the envelope ejected by the explosion of a classical nova during its interaction with the stellar wind from the optical companion. Using this model, we have shown that the matter ejected during the outburst in the system CI Cam had no steep velocity gradients and that the reverse shock could heat the ejected matter only to a temperature of ~0.1 keV. Therefore, this matter did not contribute to the mean temperature and luminosity of the system observed in the energy range 3-20 keV., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We have computed a spherically symmetric model for the interaction of matter ejected during the outburst of a classical nova with the stellar wind from its optical component.This model is used to describe the intense X-ray outburst (the peak 3-20 keV flux was ~2 Crab) of the binary system CI Camelopardalis in 1998. According to our model, the stellar wind from the optical component heated by a strong shock wave produced when matter is ejected from the white dwarf as the result of a thermonuclear explosion on its surface is the emission source in the standard X-ray band. Comparison of the calculated and observed time dependences of the mean radiation temperature and luminosity of the binary system during its outburst has yielded very important characteristics of the explosion.We have been able to measure the velocity of the ejected matter immediately after the onset of the explosion for the first time: it follows from our model that the ejected matter had a velocity of ~2700 km/s even on 0.1-0.5 day after the outburst onset and it flew with such a velocity for the first 1-1.5 day under an external force, possibly, the radiation pressure from the white dwarf. Subsequently, the matter probably became transparent and began to decelerate. The time dependence of the mean radiation temperature at late expansion phases has allowed us to estimate the mass of the ejected matter, ~10^{-7}-10^{-6} Msun. The mass loss rate in the stellar wind required to explain the observed peak luminosity of the binary system during its outburst has been estimated to be dM/dt ~(1-2)x10^{-6} Msun/yr., Comment: 19 pages, 24 figures; unimportant correction of the formula

We present our analysis of the extensive monitoring of SS433 by the RXTE observatory collected over the period 1996-2005. The difference between energy spectra taken at different precessional and orbital phases shows the presence of strong photoabsorption (N_H>10^{23}cm^{-2}) near the optical star, probably due to its powerful, dense wind. Therefore the size of the secondary deduced from analysis of X-ray orbital eclipses might be significantly larger than its Roche lobe size, which must be taken into account when evaluating the mass ratio from analysis of X-ray eclipses. Assuming that a precessing accretion disk is geometrically thick, we recover the temperature profile in the X-ray emitting jet that best fits the observed precessional variations in the X-ray emission temperature. The hottest visible part of the X-ray jet is located at a distance of l_0/a~0.06-0.09, or ~2-3*10^{11}cm from the central compact object, and has a temperature of about T_{max}~30 keV. We discovered appreciable orbital X-ray eclipses at the ``crossover'' precessional phases (jets are in the plane of the sky, disk is edge-on), which under model assumptions put a lower limit on the size of the optical component R/a>0.5 and an upper limit on a mass ratio of binary companions q=M_x/M_{opt}<0.3-0.35, if the X-ray opaque size of the star is not larger than 1.2R_{Roche, secondary}., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present analysis of extensive monitoring of SS433 by the RXTE observatory collected over the period 1996-2005. The difference between energy spectra taken at different precessional and orbital phases shows the presence of a strong photoabsorption near the optical star, probably due to its powerful dense wind. Assuming that a precessing accretion disk is thick, we recover the temperature profile in the X-ray emitting jet that best fits the observed precessional variations of the X-ray emission temperature. The hottest visible part of the X-ray jet is located at a distance of $l_0/a\sim0.06-0.09$, or $\sim2-3\times10^{11}$cm from the central compact object and has a temperature of about $T_{\rm max}\sim30$ keV. We discovered appreciable orbital X-ray eclipses at the ``crossover'' precessional phases (jets are in the plane of the sky, disk is edge-on) which put a lower limit on the size of the optical component $R/a\ga0.5$ and an upper limit on a mass ratio of binary companions $q=M_{\rm x}/M_{\rm opt}\la0.3-0.35$. The size of the eclipsing region can be larger than secondary's Roche lobe because of substantial photoabsorption by dense stellar wind. We present spectra for 34 accretion-powered X-ray and one millisecond pulsars that were within the field of view of the INTEGRAL observatory over two years (December 2002 - January 2005) of its in-orbit operation and that were detected by its instruments at a statistically significant level (> 8 sigma in the energy range 18--60 keV). There are seven recently discovered objects of this class among the pulsars studied: 2RXP J130159.6-635806, IGR/AX J16320-4751, IGR J16358-4726, AX J163904-4642, IGR J16465-4507, SAX/IGR J18027-2017 and AX J1841.0-0535. We have also obtained hard X-ray (> 20 keV) spectra for the accretion-powered pulsars A 0114+650, RX J0146.9+6121, AX J1820.5-1434, AX J1841.0-0535 and the millisecond pulsar XTE J1807-294 for the first time. We investigated the optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray variability of the pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545. Our timing and spectral analyses of the X-ray and gamma-ray emissions from the source using RXTE and INTEGRAL data show that the shape of its spectrum in the energy range 3 -- 100 keV is virtually independent of its intensity and the orbital phase. Based on XMM-Newton data, we accurately (5 arcsec) localized the object and determined the optical counterpart in the binary. We placed upper limits on the variability of the latter in the R band and the H-alpha line on time scales of the orbital and pulse periods, respectively., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, Astronomy Letters, 30, 824-833 (2004)
