Both intrinsic and extrinsic orbital Hall effects (OHE) in bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are investigated in the presence of short-range disorder using quantum kinetic theory. Bilayer TMDs provide an ideal platform to study the effects of inversion symmetry breaking on transport properties due to their unique structural and electronic characteristics. While bilayer TMDs are naturally inversion symmetric, applying a finite gate voltage to create a bias between the layers effectively breaks this symmetry. Our findings reveal that slightly away from the band edges, the extrinsic OHE becomes the dominant contribution in both inversion-symmetric and asymmetric cases, with its prominence increasing significantly as the Fermi energy rises. Furthermore, we demonstrate that breaking inversion symmetry greatly enhances the extrinsic OHE. This enhancement arises from the fundamentally distinct behavior of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in centrosymmetric systems, where intraband components vanish due to symmetry constraints. As a result, in centrosymmetric systems, only the off-diagonal components of the density matrix contribute to the extrinsic OHE. In contrast, in noncentrosymmetric systems, both diagonal and off-diagonal components play a role. Our study suggests that in experimentally relevant, highly doped systems, the OHE is predominantly extrinsic in nature, regardless of whether the system is centrosymmetric or noncentrosymmetric. Importantly, we infer that even a weakly breaking of inversion symmetry can lead to a dramatic enhancement of the OHE, a finding with significant implications for experimental investigations., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We theoretically investigate magnon heat transport in an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator containing a domain wall (DW) in the presence of a magnetic field applied along the easy axis. We show that the intrinsic spin of the DW couples to the external magnetic field which modifies the transmission of spin wave (SW) through the DW. Applying the magnetic field lifts the degeneracy between two AFM magnon modes and results in different occupation numbers for the two magnon modes. Combined with the finite reflection of a narrow domain wall, this is found to have a significant impact on the magnon heat transport, giving rise to thermal magnetoresistance. Our findings suggest that an AFM DW can be used as a controllable element for regulating the magnon heat current in magnonic devices through the application of a magnetic field.

Motivated by the fact that as the number of generators of an ideal grows so does the complexity of calculating relations among the generators, this paper identifies collections of monomial ideals with a growing number of generators which have predictable free resolutions. We use elementary collapses from discrete homotopy theory to construct infinitely many monomial ideals, with an arbitrary number of generators, which have similar or the same betti numbers. We show that the Cohen-Macaulay property in each unmixed (pure) component of the ideal is preserved as the ideal is expanded., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Let $I(G)$ be the edge ideal of a gapfree graph $G$. An open conjecture of Nevo and Peeva states that $I(G)^q$ has linear resolution for $q\gg 0$. We present a promising approach to this challenging conjecture by investigating the stronger property of linear quotients. Specifically, we make the conjecture that if $I(G)^q$ has linear quotients for some integer $q\geq 1$, then $I(G)^{s}$ has linear quotients for all $s\geq q$. We give a partial solution to this conjecture, and identify conditions under which only finitely many powers need to be checked. It is known that if $G$ does not contain a cricket, a diamond, or a $C_4$, then $I(G)^q$ has linear resolution for $q \geq 2$. We construct a family of gapfree graphs $G$ containing cricket, diamond, $C_4$ together with $C_5$ as induced subgraphs of $G$ for which $I(G)^q$ has linear quotients for $q \ge 2$., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures

A major open question in the theory of Gorenstein liaison is whether or not every arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^n$ can be G-linked to a complete intersection. Migliore and Nagel showed that, if such a scheme is generically Gorenstein (e.g., reduced), then, after re-embedding so that it is viewed as a subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$, indeed it can be G-linked to a complete intersection. Motivated by this result, we consider techniques for constructing G-links on a scheme from G-links on a closely related reduced scheme. Polarization is a tool for producing a squarefree monomial ideal from an arbitrary monomial ideal. Basic double G-links on squarefree monomial ideals can be induced from vertex decompositions of their Stanley-Reisner complexes. Given a monomial ideal $I$ and a vertex decomposition of the Stanley-Reisner complex of its polarization $\mathcal{P}(I)$, we give conditions that allow for the lifting of an associated basic double G-link of $\mathcal{P}(I)$ to a basic double G-link of $I$ itself. We use the relationship we develop in the process to show that the Stanley-Reisner complexes of polarizations of artinian monomial ideals and of stable Cohen-Macaulay monomial ideals are vertex decomposable, recovering and strengthening the recent result of Fl{\o}ystad and Mafi that these complexes are shellable. We then introduce and study polarization of a Gr\"obner basis of an arbitrary homogeneous ideal and give a relationship between geometric vertex decomposition of a polarization and elementary G-biliaison that is analogous to our result on vertex decomposition and basic double G-linkage., Comment: 30 pages, comments welcome

We present a theoretical study of the scattering of spin waves by a domain wall (DW) in a ferrimagnetic (FiM) spin chain in which two sublattices carry spins of unequal magnitudes. We find that a narrow, but atomically smooth FiM DW exhibits a different behavior in comparison with similarly smooth ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic DWs due to the inequivalence of the two sublattices. Specifically, for sufficiently weak anisotropy, the smaller spin at the center of the DW is found to become precisely normal to the easy-axis, selecting an arbitrary direction in the $xy$-plane and thereby breaking the U(1) spin-rotational symmetry spontaneously. This particular form of a FiM DW does not occur in antiferromagnetic systems and is shown to lead to a strong dependence of spin wave scattering pattern on the state of polarization of the spin wave, which can be either right-handed or left-handed, suggesting the utilization of such a narrow DW as a spin-wave filter. Moreover, we find that in the case of an atomically sharp DW, where all the spins point either up or down due to strong easy-axis anisotropy and therefore the polarization of the spin wave is conserved upon transmission, the wave vector of the spin wave changes after passing through the DW leading to a change in the group velocity of the spin wave. This change of the wave vector indicates the acceleration or deceleration of the spin waves and thus a sharp FiM DW could serve as a spin wave accelerator or decelerator in spintronics devices, offering a functionality absent in a ferromagnetic and an antiferromagnetic counterpart. Our results indicate that FiM spin textures can interact with spin waves distinctly from ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic counterparts, suggesting that they may offer spin-wave functionalities that are absent in more conventional magnets.

Every multigraded free resolution of a monomial ideal I contains the Scarf multidegrees of I. We say I has a Scarf resolution if the Scarf multidegrees are sufficient to describe a minimal free resolution of I. The main question of this paper is which graphs G have edge ideal I(G) with a Scarf resolution? We show that I(G) has a Scarf resolution if and only if G is a gap-free forest. We also classify connected graphs for which all powers of I(G) have Scarf resolutions. Along the way, we give a concrete description of the Scarf complex of any forest. For a general graph, we give a recursive construction for its Scarf complex based on Scarf complexes of induced subgraphs.

In 2021, Hibi et. al. studied lattice points in $\mathbb{N}^2$ that appear as $(\depth R/I,\dim R/I)$ when $I$ is the edge ideal of a graph on $n$ vertices, and showed these points lie between two convex polytopes. When restricting to the class of Cameron--Walker graphs, they showed that these pairs do not form a convex lattice polytope. In this paper, for the edge ideal $I$ of a Cameron--Walker graph on $n$ vertices, we find how many points in $\mathbb{N}^2$ appear as $(\depth(R/I),\dim(R/I))$, and how many points in $\mathbb{N}^4$ appear as $(\depth(R/I),\reg(R/I),\dim(R/I),\degh(R/I)).$, Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

In this paper we define spherical complexes as simplicial complexes with the property that every subcomplex obtained by a sequence of links and deletions either has trivial homology, or has the homology of a sphere. Examples of such complexes are independence complexes of ternary graphs and independence complexes of simplicial forests. We give criteria for when a spherical complex is acyclic, and describe the dimension of the sphere when it is not. We then apply our results to compute the Leray number of these complexes, and define combinatorial invariants for them which are counterparts to algebraic invariants of their Stanley-Reisner rings., Comment: Comments are welcome

This paper is concerned with finding bounds on betti numbers and describing combinatorially and topologically (minimal) free resolutions of powers of ideals generated by a fixed number $q$ of square-free monomials. Among such ideals, we focus on a specific ideal $\mathcal{E}_q$, which we call {\it extremal}, and which has the property that for each $r\ge 1$ the betti numbers of ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ are an upper bound for the betti numbers of $I^r$ for any ideal $I$ generated by $q$ square-free monomials (in any number of variables). We study the Scarf complex of the ideals ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ and use this simplicial complex to extract information on minimal free resolutions. In particular, we show that ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ has a minimal free resolution supported on its Scarf complex when $q\leq 4$ or when $r\leq 2$, and we describe explicitly this complex. For any $q$ and $r$, we also show that $\beta_1({\mathcal{E}_q}^r)$ is the smallest possible, or in other words equal to the number of edges in the Scarf complex. These results lead to effective bounds on the betti numbers of $I^r$, with $I$ as above. For example, we obtain that pd$(I^r)\leq 5$ for all ideals $I$ generated by $4$ square-free monomials and any $r\geq 1$.

We consider Artinian level algebras arising from the whiskering of a graph. Employing a result by Dao-Nair we show that multiplication by a general linear form has maximal rank in degrees 1 and $n-1$ when the characteristic is not two, where $n$ is the number of vertices in the graph. The valley-contrasting geometric features of electronic wave functions manifested in Berry curvature and orbital magnetic moment have profound consequences on magnetotransport properties in both three- and two-dimensional systems. Although the importance of employing beyond-relaxation-time-approximation methods and intervalley scatterings in collision integral has been confirmed in three dimensions, they have been widely overlooked in previous studies on two-dimensional multi-valley systems. Here, we revisit the issue of weak-field magnetoresistance in two-dimensional multi-valley systems with broken inversion symmetry. We provide an exact solution to the Boltzmann equation and demonstrate that the inclusion of in-scattering terms in the collision integral can change the sign of the magnetoresistance in high-density regime. With an initial valley polarization, we also predict an orbital magnetic moment-induced intrinsic contribution to Hall conductivity in the time-reversal-broken situation, which is consistently negative, and in contrast to the anomalous Hall term, it does not depend on the polarization sign. Depending on which valley has the excess charge, our calculations show that a completely various behavior is exhibited in the magnetoresistance which can be considered as a valley-polarization probe in the experiment., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The question we address in this paper is: which monomial ideals have minimal cellular resolutions, that is, minimal resolutions obtained from homogenizing the chain maps of CW-complexes? Velasco gave families of examples of monomial ideals that do not have minimal cellular resolutions, but those examples have large minimal generating sets. In this paper, we show that if a monomial ideal has at most four generators, then the ideal and its (monomial) Artinian reductions have minimal cellular resolutions. When the ideal is generated by two monomials, we can give a precise description of the CW-complex supporting minimal free resolution of the ideal and its Artinian reduction. Also, in this case, we compute the multigraded Betti numbers, Cohen-Macaulay type and determine when the corresponding algebra is a level algebra., Comment: 31 pages

The Taylor resolution is almost never minimal for powers of monomial ideals, even in the square-free case. In this paper we introduce a smaller resolution for each power of any square-free monomial ideal, which depends only on the number of generators of the ideal. More precisely, for every pair of fixed integers $r$ and $q$, we construct a simplicial complex that supports a free resolution of the $r$-th power of any square-free monomial ideal with $q$ generators. The resulting resolution is significantly smaller than the Taylor resolution, and is minimal for special cases. Considering the relations on the generators of a fixed ideal allows us to further shrink these resolutions. We also introduce a class of ideals called "extremal ideals", and show that the Betti numbers of powers of all square-free monomial ideals are bounded by Betti numbers of powers of extremal ideals. Our results lead to upper bounds on Betti numbers of powers of any square-free monomial ideal that greatly improve the binomial bounds offered by the Taylor resolution., Comment: 32 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We theoretically study the scattering of spin waves from a sharp domain wall in an antiferromagnetic spin chain. While the continuum model for an antiferromagnetic material yields the well-known result that spin waves can pass through a wide domain wall with no reflection, here we show that, based on the discrete spin Hamiltonian, spin waves are generally reflected by a domain wall with a reflection coefficient that increases as the domain-wall width decreases. Remarkably, we find that, in the interesting case of an atomically sharp domain wall, the reflection of spin waves exhibits strong dependence on the state of circular polarization of the spin waves, leading to mainly reflection for one polarization while permitting partial transmission for the other, thus realizing an atomic-scale spin-wave polarizer. The polarization of the transmitted spin wave depends on the orientation of the spin in the sharp domain wall, which can be controlled by an external field or spin torque. Our utilization of a sharp antiferromagnetic domain wall as an atomic-scale spin-wave polarizer leads us to envision that ultra-small magnetic solitons such as domain walls and skyrmions may enable realizations of atomic-scale spin-wave scatterers with useful functionalities.

Blockchain is one of the most discussed and highly accepted technologies, primarily due to its application in almost every field where third parties are needed for trust. Blockchain technology relies on distributed consensus for trust, which is accomplished using hash functions and public-key cryptography. Most of the cryptographic algorithms in use today are vulnerable to quantum attacks. In this work, a systematic literature review is done so that it can be repeated, starting with identifying the research questions. Focusing on these research questions, literature is analysed to find the answers to these questions. The survey is completed by answering the research questions and identification of the research gaps. It is found in the literature that 30% of the research solutions are applicable for the data layer, 24% for the application and presentation layer, 23% for the network layer, 16% for the consensus layer and only 1% for hardware and infrastructure layer. The quasiparticle band-gap renormalization induced by the doped carriers is an important and well-known feature in two-dimensional semiconductors, including transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and it is of both theoretical and practical interest. To get a quantitative understanding of this effect, here we calculate the quasiparticle band-gap renormalization of the electron-doped monolayer MoS$_2$, a prototypical member of TMDs. The many-body electron-electron interaction induced renormalization of the self-energy is found within the random phase approximation and to account for the quasi-2D character of the Coulomb interaction in this system a Keldysh-type interaction with a nonlocal dielectric constant is used. Considering the renormalization of both the valence and the conduction bands, our calculations reveal a large and nonlinear band-gap renormalization upon adding free carriers to the conduction band. We find a 410 meV reduction of the band gap for the monolayer MoS$_2$ on SiO$_2$ substrate at the free carrier density $n=4.9\times 10^{12} \rm{cm^{-2}}$ which is in excellent agreement with available experimental results. We also discuss the role of exchange and correlation parts of the self-energy on the overall band-gap renormalization of the system. The strong dependence of the band-gap renormalization on the surrounding dielectric environment is also demonstrated in this work, and a much larger shrinkage of the band gap is predicted for the freestanding monolayer MoS$_2$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. This paper is concerned with the question of whether geometric structures such as cell complexes can be used to simultaneously describe the minimal free resolutions of all powers of a monomial ideal. We provide a full answer in the case of square-free monomial ideals of projective dimension one, by introducing a combinatorial construction of a family of (cubical) cell complexes whose 1-skeletons are powers of a graph that supports the resolution of the ideal.

Well ordered covers of square-free monomial ideals are subsets of the minimal generating set ordered in a certain way that give rise to a Lyubeznik resolution for the ideal, and have guaranteed nonvanishing Betti numbers in certain degrees. This paper is about square-free monomial ideals which have a well ordered cover. We consider the question of subadditivity of syzygies of square-free monomial ideals via complements in the lcm lattice of the ideal, and examine how lattice complementation breaks well ordered covers of the ideal into (well ordered) covers of subideals. We also introduce a family of well ordered covers called strongly disjoint sets of simplicial bouquets (generalizing work of Kimura on graphs), which are relatively easy to identify in simplicial complexes. Given a square-free monomial ideal $I$, we define a simplicial complex labeled by the generators of $I^2$ which supports a free resolution of $I^2$. As a consequence, we obtain (sharp) upper bounds on the Betti numbers of the second power of any square-free monomial ideal.

We calculate the quasiparticle properties of $\rm{MoS_2}$ monolayer at $T=0$ considering the dynamical electron-electron interaction effect within random-phase-approximation (RPA). The calculations are carried out for an electron-doped slab of $\rm{MoS_2}$ monolayer using a minimal massive Dirac Hamiltonian and the quasi-two-dimensional nature of the Coulomb interaction in this system is taken into account considering a modified interaction of Keldysh type. Having calculated the real and imaginary parts of the retarded self-energy, we find the spectral function and discuss the impact of extrinsic variables such as the dielectric medium and the charge carrier density on the appearance and position of the quasiparticle peaks. We also report the results of the renormalization constant and the effective Fermi velocity calculations in a broad range of the coupling constant and carrier density. We show that the effective Fermi velocity obtained solving the self-consistent Dyson equation has an absolutely different behavior from the one found from the on-shell approximation. Our results show that the nonlocal dielectric screening of the monolayer tends to stabilize the Fermi liquid picture in $\rm{MoS_2}$ monolayer and that the interaction strength parameter of this system is a multivariable function of the coupling constant, carrier density, and also the screening length., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

This paper introduces an extension to the normal distribution through the polar method to capture bimodality and asymmetry, which are often observed characteristics of empirical data. The later two features are entirely controlled by a separate scalar parameter. Explicit expressions for the cumulative distribution function, the density function and the moments were derived. The stochastic representation of the distribution facilitates implementing Bayesian estimation via the Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. We consider the following question: if a simplicial complex $\Delta$ has $d$-homology, then does the corresponding $d$-cycle always induce cycles of smaller dimension that are not boundaries in $\Delta$? We provide an answer to this question in a fixed dimension. We use the breaking of homology to show the subadditivity property for the maximal degrees of syzygies of monomial ideals in a fixed homological degree.

Using the concept of $d$-collapsibility from combinatorial topology, we define chordal simplicial complexes and show that their Stanley-Reisner ideals are componentwise linear. Our construction is inspired by and an extension of "chordal clutters'' which was defined by Bigdeli, Yazdan Pour and Zaare-Nahandi in 2017, and characterizes Betti tables of all ideals with linear resolution in a polynomial ring. We show $d$-collapsible and $d$-representable complexes produce componentwise linear ideals for appropriate $d$. Along the way, we prove that there are generators that when added to the ideal, do not change Betti numbers in certain degrees. We then show that large classes of componentwise linear ideals, such as Gotzmann ideals and square-free stable ideals have chordal Stanley-Reisner complexes, that Alexander duals of vertex decomposable complexes are chordal, and conclude that the Betti table of every componentwise linear ideal is identical to that of the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a chordal complex., Comment: 31 pages

We investigate the magnetotransport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas with anisotropic k-cubic Rashba interaction at the $\rm{LaAlO_3}$/$\rm{SrTiO_3}$ interface. The Landau levels and density of states of the system as well as the magnetotransport coefficients are evaluated. A somehow anomalous beating pattern in low magnetic field regime is found both in the density profile and magnetoresistivity. We discuss the impact of electron density, Landau level broadening and Rashba spin-orbit constant on the appearance of the beatings in low magnetic fields and find that at low electron concentrations and not very strong spin-orbit interactions the beatings smooth out. On the other hand, as the magnetic field increases, the Zeeman term becomes the dominant splitting mechanism leading to the spin-split peaks in SdH oscillations. We also show that the observation of the beatings in low magnetic fields needs a system with rather higher carrier concentration so that the beatings persist up to sufficiently large fields where the oscillations are not smoothed out by Landau level broadening. The quantum Hall plateaus are evaluated and we show the Chern number with both even and odd values is replaced by the odd numbers when two subband energies are close with spin degenerate energy levels. Along with the numerical evaluation of the magnetotransport properties, a perturbative calculation is also performed which can be used in the case of low densities and not very large filling factors., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

By using semi-analytical method,we investigate the transmission and reflection coefficient and absorption and scattering cross section of spin 0,1,2 particles which are massless from a charged non rotating black holes. Here orbiting scattering can be characterized of massless particles from Reissner-Nordstrom black hole at a critical angular momentum. We examine the effects upon reflection,transmission,scattering and absorption cross section due to the black hole charge. We find that with the increase of charge the absorption cross section decreased in spin-2 particle while in case of spin 0 particle it is reversed and in case of spin 1 the effect is negligible due to charge., Comment: 13 pages and 11 figures are included

We show that a monomial ideal $I$ has projective dimension $\leq$ 1 if and only if the minimal free resolution of $S/I$ is supported on a graph that is a tree. This is done by constructing specific graphs which support the resolution of the $S/I$. We study plasmon modes of the two-dimensional electron gas residing at the interface of band insulators $\rm{LaAlO_3}$ and $\rm{SrTiO_3}$ (LAO/STO) and the plasmon excitations of graphene-LAO/STO double layer as well. Considering the electron-electron interaction within random phase approximation, we calculate the plasmon dispersions of both systems numerically and in the long wavelength limit analytical expressions for collective modes are found. One optical mode and two (three) acoustic modes are predicted for the LAO/STO (graphene-LAO/STO) system where only the uppermost acoustic mode of both systems can emerge above the electron-hole continuum depending on the characteristics of each system. In the case of LAO/STO interface, thanks to the spatial separation between $\rm{t_{2g}}$ orbitals, the upper acoustic mode might be undamped at the long wavelength limit depending on the exact value of the dielectric constant of $\rm{SrTiO_3}$. Same as other double layer systems, the interlayer distance for the graphene-LAO/STO system plays a crucial role in damping the upper acoustic mode. Faster damping of all plasmon modes of the present double layer system in comparison with the ones with conventional 2DEG instead of $\rm{t_{2g}}$ electron gas is also found due to heavier effective masses of the gas and also stronger interlayer Coulomb interaction., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures (one figure is added)

Early detection and prognosis of breast cancer are feasible by utilizing histopathological grading of biopsy specimens. This research is focused on detection and grading of nuclear pleomorphism in histopathological images of breast cancer. The proposed method consists of three internal steps. First, unmixing colors of H&E is used in the preprocessing step. Second, nuclei boundaries are extracted incorporating the center of cancerous nuclei which are detected by applying morphological operations and Difference of Gaussian filter on the preprocessed image. Finally, segmented nuclei are scored to accomplish one parameter of the Nottingham grading system for breast cancer. In this approach, the nuclei area, chromatin density, contour regularity, and nucleoli presence, are features for nuclear pleomorphism scoring. Experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm, with an accuracy of 86.6%, made significant advancement in detecting cancerous nuclei compared to existing methods in the related literature.

Strong placement games (SP-games) are a class of combinatorial games whose structure allows one to describe the game via simplicial complexes. A natural question is whether well-known invariants of combinatorial games, such as "game value", appear as invariants of the simplicial complexes. This paper is the first step in that direction. We show that every simplicial complex encodes a certain type of SP-game (called an "invariant SP-game") whose ruleset is independent of the board it is played on. We also show that in the class of SP-games isomorphic simplicial complexes correspond to isomorphic game trees, and hence equal game values. We also study a subclass of SP-games corresponding to flag complexes, showing that there is always a game whose corresponding complex is a flag complex no matter which board it is played on.

We prove the subadditivity property for the maximal degrees of the syzygies of facet ideals simplicial forests. We calculate the mobility of a two-dimensional electron gas residing at the interface of LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ following a three band Boltzmann approach at low temperature, where carrier-charged impurity scattering process is assumed to be dominant. We explain the anisotropic characteristic of the dielectric function, which is a consequence of elliptical bands close to Fermi surface. The screening effect, which weakens the long-range Coulomb interaction of the electron-impurity is considered within the random phase approximation. Working at carrier densities high enough to neglect the spin-orbit induced splitting of the bands, we find that the mobility varies inversely with the cubic power of the carrier density ($n_{2D}^{-3}$) in good agreement with the experimental results. Dynamic Channel Bonding (DCB) allows for the dynamic selection and use of multiple contiguous basic channels in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). A WLAN operating under DCB can enjoy a larger bandwidth, when available, and therefore achieve a higher throughput. However, the use of larger bandwidths also increases the contention with adjacent WLANs, which can result in longer delays in accessing the channel and consequently, a lower throughput. In this paper, a scenario consisting of multiple WLANs using DCB and operating within carrier-sensing range of one another is considered. An analytical framework for evaluating the performance of such networks is presented. The analysis is carried out using a Markov chain model that characterizes the interactions between adjacent WLANs with overlapping channels. An algorithm is proposed for systematically constructing the Markov chain corresponding to any given scenario. The analytical model is then used to highlight and explain the key properties that differentiate DCB networks of WLANs from those operating on a single shared channel. Furthermore, the analysis is applied to networks of IEEE 802.11ac WLANs operating under DCB--which do not fully comply with some of the simplifying assumptions in our analysis--to show that the analytical model can give accurate results in more realistic scenarios.

Structural properties of Mild Steel have been modified by embedding Carbon Nanotubes in its matrix. The embedment was done by forming a composite at the surface of MS with the help of a thermionic electron beam source at an acceleration potential of 5 kV and beam current of 45 mA. Structural analysis was carried out by X-Ray Diffraction(XRD). Stress and strain were reduced about three times while the crystalline size was reduced to 22% after embedment of Carbon Nanotubes. Surface morphology was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and composition was examined by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy(EDX) respectively. Average grain size of the modified sample was reduced from 1.94 micrometre to 720 nm whereas the hardness was increased to 30% for as received samples., Comment: 10 pages, 2 tables and 6 figures

We give a sufficient condition for a monomial ideal to have a nonzero Betti number in each multidegree. In the case of facet ideals of simplicial forests, this condition becomes a necessary one and it allows us to characterize Betti numbers, projective dimension and regularity of such ideals combinatorially. Our condition is expressed in terms of minimal facet covers of simplicial complexes.

In wireless local area networks (WLANs), a media access protocol arbitrates access to the channel. In current IEEE 802.11 WLANs, carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is used. Carrier sense multiple access with enhanced collision avoidance (CSMA/ECA) is a subtle variant of the well-known CSMA/CA algorithm that offers substantial performance benefits. CSMA/ECA significantly reduces the collision probability and, under certain conditions, leads to a completely collision-free schedule. The only difference between CSMA/CA and CSMA/ECA is that the latter uses a deterministic backoff after successful transmissions. This deterministic backoff is a constant and is the same for all the stations. The first part of the paper is of tutorial nature, offering an introduction to the basic operation of CSMA/ECA and describing the benefits of this approach in a qualitative manner. The second part of the paper surveys related contributions, briefly summarizing the main challenges and potential solutions, and also introducing variants and derivatives of CSMA/ECA.

We prove that multigraded Betti numbers of a simplicial forest are always either 0 or 1. Moreover a nonzero multidegree appears exactly at one homological degree in the resolution. In this short note we prove that the projective dimension of a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay square-free monomial ideal is equal to the maximal height of its minimal primes (also known as the big height), or equivalently, the maximal cardinality of a minimal vertex cover of its facet complex. This in particular gives a formula for the projective dimension of facet ideals of these classes of ideals, which are known to be sequentially Cohen-Macaulay: graph trees and simplicial trees, chordal graphs and some cycles, chordal clutters and graphs, and some path ideals to mention a few. Since polarization preserves projective dimension, our result also gives the projective dimension of any sequentially Cohen-Macaulay monomial ideal., Comment: Since posting this paper we have found that the same result regarding projective dimension of square-free monomial ideals appears in the paper of Morey and Villarreal

Placement games are a subclass of combinatorial games which are played on graphs. We will demonstrate that one can construct simplicial complexes corresponding to a placement game, and this game could be considered as a game played on these simplicial complexes. These complexes are constructed using square-free monomials.

A strong placement game $G$ played on a board $B$ is equivalent to a simplicial complex $\Delta_{G,B}$. We look at weight games, a subclass of strong placement games, and introduce upper bounds on the number of positions with $i$ pieces in $G$, or equivalently the number of faces with $i$ vertices in $\Delta_{G,B}$, which are reminiscent of the Kruskal-Katona bounds.

In 1995 Villarreal gave a combinatorial description of the equations of Rees algebras of quadratic squarefree monomial ideals. His description was based on the concept of closed even walks in a graph. In this paper a candidate protocol to replace the prevalent CSMA/CA medium access control in Wireless Local Area Networks is presented. The proposed protocol can achieve higher throughput than CSMA/CA, while maintaining fairness, and without additional implementation complexity. Under certain circumstances, it is able to reach and maintain collision-free operation, even when the number of contenders is variable and potentially large. In this paper, the problem of assigning channel slots to a number of contending stations is modeled as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). A learning MAC protocol that uses deterministic backoffs after successful transmissions is used as a decentralized solver for the CSP. The convergence process of the solver is modeled by an absorbing Markov chain (MC), and analytical, closed-form expressions for its transition probabilities are derived. Using these, the expected number of steps required to reach a solution is found. The analysis is validated by means of simulations and the model is extended to account for the presence of channel errors. The results are applicable in various resource allocation scenarios in wireless networks.

In this paper we extend one direction of Fr\"oberg's theorem on a combinatorial classification of quadratic monomial ideals with linear resolutions. We do this by generalizing the notion of a chordal graph to higher dimensions with the introduction of d-chorded and orientably-d-cycle-complete simplicial complexes. We show that a certain class of simplicial complexes, the d-dimensional trees, correspond to ideals having linear resolutions over fields of characteristic 2 and also give a necessary combinatorial condition for a monomial ideal to be componentwise linear over all fields., Comment: Revised to appear in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A

Wireless objects equipped with multiple antennas are able to simultaneously transmit multiple packets by exploiting the channel's spatial dimensions. In this paper, we study the benefits of such Multiple Packet Transmission (MPT) approach, when it is used in combination with a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol for fully interconnected networks, addressing the interactions between the two mechanisms and showing the performance gains that can be achieved. To this end, a very simple Media Access Control (MAC) protocol that captures the fundamental properties and tradeoffs of a CSMA/CA channel access protocol supporting MPT is introduced. Using this protocol as a reference, a new analytical model is presented for the case of non-saturated traffic sources with finite buffer space. Simulation results show that the analytical model is able to accurately characterize the steady-state behaviour of the reference protocol for different number of antennas and different traffic loads, providing a useful tool for understanding the performance gains achieved by MAC protocols supporting MPT., Comment: Computer Networks, 2013
