The Ceresa cycle is a canonical algebraic $1$-cycle on the Jacobian of an algebraic curve. We construct an algorithm which, given a curve over a number field, often provides a certificate that the Ceresa cycle is non-torsion, without relying on the presence of any additional symmetries of the curve. Under the hypothesis that the Sato--Tate group is the whole of $\operatorname*{GSp}$, we prove that if the Ceresa class (the image of the Ceresa cycle in \'{e}tale cohomology) is non-torsion, then the algorithm will eventually terminate with a certificate attesting to this fact.

We introduce PatternBoost, a flexible method for finding interesting constructions in mathematics. Our algorithm alternates between two phases. In the first ``local'' phase, a classical search algorithm is used to produce many desirable constructions. In the second ``global'' phase, a transformer neural network is trained on the best such constructions. Samples from the trained transformer are then used as seeds for the first phase, and the process is repeated. We give a detailed introduction to this technique, and discuss the results of its application to several problems in extremal combinatorics. The performance of PatternBoost varies across different problems, but there are many situations where its performance is quite impressive. Using our technique, we find the best known solutions to several long-standing problems, including the construction of a counterexample to a conjecture that had remained open for 30 years., Comment: 32 pages

Coordinated collaboration is essential to realize the added value of and infrastructure requirements for global image data sharing in the life sciences. In this White Paper, we take a first step at presenting some of the most common use cases as well as critical/emerging use cases of (including the use of artificial intelligence for) biological and medical image data, which would benefit tremendously from better frameworks for sharing (including technical, resourcing, legal, and ethical aspects). In the second half of this paper, we paint an ideal world scenario for how global image data sharing could work and benefit all life sciences and beyond. As this is still a long way off, we conclude by suggesting several concrete measures directed toward our institutions, existing imaging communities and data initiatives, and national funders, as well as publishers. Our vision is that within the next ten years, most researchers in the world will be able to make their datasets openly available and use quality image data of interest to them for their research and benefit. In an equilibrium thermal environment, random elastic collisions between background particles and a tracer establish the picture of Brownian motion fulfilling the celebrated Einstein relation between diffusivity and mobility. In nature, environments often comprise collections of autonomously moving objects that exhibit fascinating non-equilibrium phenomena and are nowadays termed active matter. We investigate experimentally the impact of an active background on a passive tracer using vibrationally excited active particles. They produce multiple correlated tapping collisions with the tracer, for which a persistent memory emerges in the dynamics. The system is described by a generalized active Einstein relation that constrains fluctuations, dissipation, and effective activity, by taking the emerging tracer memory into account. Since the resulting persistence can largely be tuned by the environmental density and motility, our findings can be useful to engineer properties of various active systems in biomedical applications, microfluidics, chemical engineering, or swarm robotics.

We prove a version of the Bhargava-Kane-Lenstra-Poonen-Rains heuristics for Selmer groups of quadratic twist families of abelian varieties over global function fields. As a consequence, we derive a result towards the "minimalist conjecture" on Selmer ranks of abelian varieties in such families. More precisely, we show that the probabilities predicted in these two conjectures are correct to within an error term in the size of the constant field, $q$, which goes to $0$ as $q$ grows. Two key inputs are a new homological stability theorem for a generalized version of Hurwitz spaces parameterizing covers of punctured Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus, and an expression of average sizes of Selmer groups in terms of the number of rational points on these Hurwitz spaces over finite fields., Comment: We added an appendix using logarithmic geometry to show the conjectured limits for the moments exist

The future of bioimage analysis is increasingly defined by the development and use of tools that rely on deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI). Let $X$ be a quasi-projective variety over a number field, admitting (after passage to $\mathbb{C}$) a geometric variation of Hodge structure whose period mapping has zero-dimensional fibers. Then the integral points of $X$ are sparse: the number of such points of height $\leq B$ grows slower than any positive power of $B$. For example, homogeneous integral polynomials in a fixed number of variables and degree, with discriminant divisible only by a fixed set of primes, are sparse when considered up to integral linear substitutions., Comment: version 2, minor edits; 20 pages

We define a notion of height for rational points with respect to a vector bundle on a proper algebraic stack with finite diagonal over a global field, which generalizes the usual notion for rational points on projective varieties. We explain how to compute this height for various stacks of interest (for instance: classifying stacks of finite groups, symmetric products of varieties, moduli stacks of abelian varieties, weighted projective spaces). In many cases our uniform definition reproduces ways already in use for measuring the complexity of rational points, while in others it is something new. Finally, we formulate a conjecture about the number of rational points of bounded height (in our sense) on a stack X, which specializes to the Baytev-Manin conjecture when X is a scheme and to Malle's conjecture when X is the classifying stack of a finite group., Comment: 61 pages; comments very welcome

The Ceresa cycle is an algebraic cycle attached to a smooth algebraic curve with a marked point, which is trivial when the curve is hyperelliptic with a marked Weierstrass point. The image of the Ceresa cycle under a certain cycle class map provides a class in \'etale cohomology called the Ceresa class. Describing the Ceresa class explicitly for non-hyperelliptic curves is in general not easy. We present a "combinatorialization" of this problem, explaining how to define a Ceresa class for a tropical algebraic curve, and also for a topological surface endowed with a multiset of commuting Dehn twists (where it is related to the Morita cocycle on the mapping class group). We explain how these are related to the Ceresa class of a smooth algebraic curve over $\mathbb{C}(\!(t)\!)$, and show that the Ceresa class in each of these settings is torsion., Comment: 37 pages, 9 figures. Decisions about how the population of the United States should be divided into legislative districts have powerful and not fully understood effects on the outcomes of elections. The problem of understanding what we might mean by "fair districting" intertwines mathematical, political, and legal reasoning; but only in recent years has the academic mathematical community gotten directly involved in the process. I'll report on recent progress in this area, how newly developed mathematical tools have affected real political decisions, and what remains to be done. We prove optimal bounds for the convergence rate of ordinal embedding (also known as non-metric multidimensional scaling) in the 1-dimensional case. The examples witnessing optimality of our bounds arise from a result in additive number theory on sets of integers with no three-term arithmetic progressions. We also carry out some computational experiments aimed at developing a sense of what the convergence rate for ordinal embedding might look like in higher dimensions.

Fixing $t \in \mathbb{R}$ and a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic, we give an explicit upper bound on the proportion of genus $g$ hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q$ whose zeta function vanishes at $\frac{1}{2} + it$. Our upper bound is independent of $g$ and tends to $0$ as $q$ grows.

Public data archives are the backbone of modern biological and biomedical research. While archives for biological molecules and structures are well-established, resources for imaging data do not yet cover the full range of spatial and temporal scales or application domains used by the scientific community. In the last few years, the technical barriers to building such resources have been solved and the first examples of scientific outputs from public image data resources, often through linkage to existing molecular resources, have been published. Using the successes of existing biomolecular resources as a guide, we present the rationale and principles for the construction of image data archives and databases that will be the foundation of the next revolution in biological and biomedical informatics and discovery., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure

Distributed algorithms are often beset by the straggler effect, where the slowest compute nodes in the system dictate the overall running time. Coding-theoretic techniques have been recently proposed to mitigate stragglers via algorithmic redundancy. Prior work in coded computation and gradient coding has mainly focused on exact recovery of the desired output. However, slightly inexact solutions can be acceptable in applications that are robust to noise, such as model training via gradient-based algorithms. In this work, we present computationally simple gradient codes based on sparse graphs that guarantee fast and approximately accurate distributed computation. We demonstrate that sacrificing a small amount of accuracy can significantly increase algorithmic robustness to stragglers.

We study the Selmer varieties of smooth projective curves of genus at least two defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which geometrically dominate a curve with CM Jacobian. We extend a result of Coates and Kim to show that Kim's non-abelian Chabauty method applies to such a curve. By combining this with results of Bogomolov-Tschinkel and Poonen on unramified correspondences, we deduce that any cover of $\mathbf{P}^1$ with solvable Galois group, and in particular any superelliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$, has only finitely many rational points over $\mathbb{Q}$., Comment: 17 pages

The purpose of this paper is to prove the upper bound in Malle's conjecture on the distribution of finite extensions of $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ with specified Galois group. As in previous work of Ellenberg-Venkatesh-Westerland, our result is based upon computations of the homology of braid groups with certain (exponential) coefficients. However, the approach in this paper is new, relying on a connection between the cohomology of Hurwitz spaces and the cohomology of quantum shuffle algebras., Comment: 81 pages. Substantially revised. Let $S$ and $T$ be subsets of $\mathbf{F}_q^n$. We show there are subsets $S'$ of $S$ and $T'$ of $T$ such that $S+T$ is the union of $S+T'$ and $S'+T$, with $|S'| + |T'|$ bounded by $c^n$ with $c < q$. The proof relies on the method of Croot-Lev-Pach and Ellenberg-Gijswijt on the cap set problem, together with a result of Meshulam on linear spaces of low-rank matrices. The result is a modest generalization of the recent bounds on (single-colored and multi-colored) sum-free sets by the author and others., Comment: 3 pages

For each integer $\ell \geq 1$, we prove an unconditional upper bound on the size of the $\ell$-torsion subgroup of the class group, which holds for all but a zero-density set of field extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ of degree $d$, for any fixed $d \in \{2,3,4,5\}$ (with the additional restriction in the case $d=4$ that the field be non-$D_4$). For sufficiently large $\ell$ (specified explicitly), these results are as strong as a previously known bound that is conditional on GRH. In this note, we show that the method of Croot, Lev, and Pach can be used to bound the size of a subset of $F_q^n$ with no three terms in arithmetic progression by $c^n$ with $c < q$. For $q=3$, the problem of finding the largest subset with no three terms in arithmetic progression is called the `cap problem'. Previously the best known upper bound for the cap problem, due to Bateman and Katz, was $O(3^n / n^{1+\epsilon})$., Comment: 4 pages. We establish new bounds on the number of tangencies and orthogonal intersections determined by an arrangement of curves. First, given a set of $n$ algebraic plane curves, we show that there are $O(n^{3/2})$ points where two or more curves are tangent. In particular, if no three curves are mutually tangent at a common point, then there are $O(n^{3/2})$ curve-curve tangencies. Second, given a family of algebraic plane curves and a set of $n$ curves from this family, we show that either there are $O(n^{3/2})$ points where two or more curves are orthogonal, or the family of curves has certain special properties. We obtain these bounds by transforming the arrangement of plane curves into an arrangement of space curves so that tangency (or orthogonality) of the original plane curves corresponds to intersection of space curves. We then bound the number of intersections of the corresponding space curves. For the case of curve-curve tangency, we use a polynomial method technique that is reminiscent of Guth and Katz's proof of the joints theorem. Let PConf^n M be the configuration space of ordered n-tuples of distinct points on a smooth manifold M admitting a nowhere-vanishing vector field. We show that the ith cohomology group with coefficients in a field H^i(PConf^n M, k) is an N-module, where N is the category of noncommutative finite sets introduced by Pirashvili and Richter. Studying the representation theory of N, we obtain new polynomiality results for the cohomology groups H^i(PConf^n M, k). In the case of unordered configuration space Conf^n M = (PConf^n M)/S_n and rational coefficients, we show that cohomology dimension in fixed degree is nondecreasing., Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure. We study the detection problem of finding planted solutions in random instances of flat satisfiability problems, a generalization of boolean satisfiability formulas. We describe the properties of random instances of flat satisfiability, as well of the optimal rates of detection of the associated hypothesis testing problem. We also study the performance of an algorithmically efficient testing procedure. We introduce a modification of our model, the light planting of solutions, and show that it is as hard as the problem of learning parity with noise. This hints strongly at the difficulty of detecting planted flat satisfiability for a wide class of tests.

We give a lower bound for the size of a subset of $\mathbb F_q^n$ containing a rich k-plane in every direction, a k-plane Furstenberg set. The chief novelty of our method is that we use arguments on non-reduced subschemes and flat families to derive combinatorial facts about incidences between points and k-planes in space., Comment: 16 pages

In this note we generalize a recent theorem of Guth and Katz on incidences between points and lines in $3$-space from characteristic $0$ to characteristic $p$, and we explain how some of the special features of algebraic geometry in characteristic $p$ manifest themselves in problems of incidence geometry.

We consider two families X_n of varieties on which the symmetric group S_n acts: the configuration space of n points in C and the space of n linearly independent lines in C^n. Given an irreducible S_n-representation V, one can ask how the multiplicity of V in the cohomology groups H*(X_n;Q) varies with n. We explain how the Grothendieck-Lefschetz Fixed Point Theorem converts a formula for this multiplicity to a formula for the number of polynomials over F_q (or maximal tori in GL_n(F_q), respectively) with specified properties related to V. In particular, we explain how representation stability in cohomology, in the sense of [CF, arXiv:1008.1368] and [CEF, arXiv:1204.4533], corresponds to asymptotic stability of various point counts as n goes to infinity., Comment: 57 pages

This paper bounds the computational cost of computing the Kauffman bracket of a link in terms of the crossing number of that link. Specifically, it is shown that the image of a tangle with $g$ boundary points and $n$ crossings in the Kauffman bracket skein module is a linear combination of $O(2^g)$ basis elements, with each coefficient a polynomial with at most $n$ nonzero terms, each with integer coefficients, and that the link can be built one crossing at a time as a sequence of tangles with maximum number of boundary points bounded by $C\sqrt{n}$ for some $C.$ From this it follows that the computation of the Kauffman bracket of the link takes time and memory a polynomial in $n$ times $2^{C\sqrt{n}}.$

We prove a version of the Cohen--Lenstra conjecture over function fields (completing the results of our prior paper). This is deduced from two more general theorems, one topological, one arithmetic: We compute the direct limit of homology, over puncture-stabilization, of spaces of maps from a punctured manifold to a fixed target; and we compute the Galois action on the set of stable components of Hurwitz schemes., Comment: This article has been temporarily withdrawn owing to a gap which affects Section 6, 12 and some theorems of the introduction: the homological stabilization maps used in this paper and the previous paper are not exactly the same. This document is an expanded version of a lecture presented at a conference on "Thin Groups and Superstrong Approximation" held at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in February 2012. Superstrong approximation is a criterion on a finitely generated group, saying that certain Cayley graphs associated to finite quotients of the group form an expander family. In recent years, our knowledge about superstrong approximation for infinite-index Zariski-dense subgroups of arithmetic lattices ("thin groups") has drastically improved. We briefly survey the construction of monodromy groups, discuss our (limited) knowledge about whether such groups are thin, and discuss an application to arithmetic geometry (see the paper "Expander graphs, gonality, and variation of Galois representations") deriving from recent advances in superstrong approximation. We conclude by indulging in some speculations about more general contexts, asking: what are the interesting questions about "nonabelian superstrong approximation" and "superstrong approximation for Galois groups?" FI-modules were introduced by the first three authors in [CEF] to encode sequences of representations of symmetric groups. Over a field of characteristic 0, finite generation of an FI-module implies representation stability for the corresponding sequence of S_n-representations. In this paper we prove the Noetherian property for FI-modules over arbitrary Noetherian rings: any sub-FI-module of a finitely generated FI-module is finitely generated. This lets us extend many of the results of [CEF] to representations in positive characteristic, and even to integral coefficients. We focus on three major applications of the main theorem: on the integral and mod p cohomology of configuration spaces; on diagonal coinvariant algebras in positive characteristic; and on an integral version of Putman's central stability for homology of congruence subgroups., Comment: 32 pages; v2: reorganized paper, expanded introduction and added Theorems B and C

In this paper we introduce and develop the theory of FI-modules. We apply this theory to obtain new theorems about: - the cohomology of the configuration space of n distinct ordered points on an arbitrary (connected, oriented) manifold - the diagonal coinvariant algebra on r sets of n variables - the cohomology and tautological ring of the moduli space of n-pointed curves - the space of polynomials on rank varieties of n x n matrices - the subalgebra of the cohomology of the genus n Torelli group generated by H^1 and more. The symmetric group S_n acts on each of these vector spaces. In most cases almost nothing is known about the characters of these representations, or even their dimensions. We prove that in each fixed degree the character is given, for n large enough, by a polynomial in the cycle-counting functions that is independent of n. In particular, the dimension is eventually a polynomial in n. We introduce a heuristic prediction for the distribution of the isomorphism class of the Galois group of the maximal pro-p extension of Q unramified outside a "random" set of primes. This is guided by reasoning similar to that governing the Cohen-Lenstra conjectures. We conclude by describing theoretical and experimental evidence for our heuristic.

We describe a probability distribution on isomorphism classes of principally quasi-polarized p-divisible groups over a finite field k of characteristic p which can reasonably be thought of as "uniform distribution," and we compute the distribution of various statistics (p-corank, a-number, etc.) of p-divisible groups drawn from this distribution. It is then natural to ask to what extent the p-divisible groups attached to a randomly chosen hyperelliptic curve (resp. curve, resp. abelian variety) over k are uniformly distributed in this sense. For instance, one can ask whether the proportion of genus-g curves over F_p whose Jacobian is ordinary approaches the limit that such a heuristic would predict. This heuristic is analogous to conjectures of Cohen-Lenstra type for fields k of characteristic other than p, in which case the random p-divisible group is defined by a random matrix recording the action of Frobenius. Extensive numerical investigation reveals some cases of agreement with the heuristic and some interesting discrepancies. We show that families of coverings of an algebraic curve where the associated Cayley-Schreier graphs form an expander family exhibit strong forms of geometric (genus and gonality) growth. Combining this general result with finiteness statements for rational points under such conditions, we derive results concerning the variation of Galois representations in one-parameter families of abelian varieties., Comment: 32 pages; v4: changes mostly in exposition

We study the variation of Mordell-Weil ranks in the Jacobians of curves in a pro-p tower over a fixed number field. In particular, we show that under mild conditions the Mordell-Weil rank of a Jacobian in the tower is bounded above by a constant multiple of its dimension. In the case of the tower of Fermat curves, we show that the constant can be taken arbitrarily close to 1. The main result is used in the forthcoming paper of Guillermo Mantilla-Soler on the Mordell-Weil rank of the modular Jacobian J(Np^m)., Comment: 8 pages

We discuss Linnik's work on the distribution of integral solutions to $x^2+y^2+z^2 =d$, as $d$ goes to infinity. We give an exposition of Linnik's ergodic method; indeed, by using large-deviation results for random walks on expander graphs, we establish a refinement of his equidistribution theorem. We discuss the connection of these ideas with modern developments (ergodic theory on homogeneous spaces, $L$-functions).

We prove a homological stabilization theorem for Hurwitz spaces: moduli spaces of branched covers of the complex projective line. This has the following arithmetic consequence: let l>2 be prime and A a finite abelian l-group. Then there exists Q = Q(A) such that, for q greater than Q and not congruent to 1 modulo l, a positive fraction of quadratic extensions of F_q(t) have the l-part of their class group isomorphic to A., Comment: 47 pages. Let K be a field. A positive motivic measure on the Grothendieck ring K_0(Var_K) is a homomorphism from K_0(Var_K) to the real numbers assigning a nonnegative value to every variety. Using the polynomial method of Dvir \cite{dvir}, we establish optimal estimates for Kakeya sets and Kakeya maximal functions associated to algebraic varieties $W$ over finite fields $F$. In the preceding paper, Calegari and Dunfield exhibit a sequence of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have increasing injectivity radius, and which, subject to some conjectures in number theory, are rational homology spheres. We prove unconditionally that these manifolds are rational homology spheres, and give a sufficient condition for a tower of hyperbolic 3-manifolds to have first Betti number 0 at each level. Let $A_t$ be a family of abelian varieties over a number field $k$ parametrized by a rational coordinate $t$, and suppose the generic fiber of $A_t$ is geometrically simple. For example, we may take $A_t$ to be the Jacobian of the hyperelliptic curve $y^2 = f(x)(x-t)$ for some polynomial $f$. We give two upper bounds for the number of $t \in k$ of height at most $B$ such that the fiber $A_t$ is geometrically non-simple. One bound comes from arithmetic geometry, and shows that there are only finitely many such $t$; but one has very little control over how this finite number varies as $f$ changes. Another bound, from analytic number theory, shows that the number of geometrically non-simple fibers grows quite slowly with $B$; this bound, by contrast with the arithmetic one, is effective, and is uniform in the coefficients of $f$. The unipotent subgroup of a finite group of Lie type over a prime field Z/pZ comes equipped with a natural set of generators; the properties of the Cayley graph associated to this set of generators have been much studied. In the present paper, we show that the diameter of this Cayley graph is bounded above and below by constant multiples of np + n^2 log p, where n is the rank of the associated Lie group. We show that the mod p Galois representations attached to a Q-curve E of degree d over an imaginary quadratic number field K are surjective for all p larger than some constant M_{K,d}, if E has potentially multiplicative reduction at any prime not dividing 6. The proof uses Mazur's formal immersion method, a result of Darmon and Merel on non-split modular curves, and an analytic argument showing that Jacobians of certain twisted modular curves admit quotients with Mordell-Weil rank 0. In combination with a previous theorem of the author and Skinner on modularity of Q-curves, the surjectivity result allows one to show that the generalized Fermat equation A^4 + B^2 = C^p has no nontrivial primitive solutions for p >= 211., Comment: 20pp. To appear, American Journal of Mathematics

Let F be an orthonormal basis of weight 2 cusp forms on Gamma_0(N). We show that various weighted averages of special values L(f \tensor chi, 1) over f in F are equal to 4 pi + O(N^{-1 + epsilon}). A previous result of Duke gives an error term of O(N^{-1/2} log N). The bound here is used in the author's paper "Galois representations attached to Q-curves and the generalized Fermat equation A^4 + B^2 = C^p," (to appear, Amer. J. Math.) to show that certain spaces of cuspforms arising there contain forms whose L-functions have nonvanishing special value. We give an upper bound on the number of extensions of a fixed number field of prescribed degree and discriminant less than X; these bounds improve on work of Schmidt. We also prove various related results, such as lower bounds for the number of extensions and upper bounds for Galois extensions.

In this paper, we show that an odd Galois representation rhobar: Gal(Qbar/Q) --> GL_2(F_9) satisfying certain local conditions at 3 and 5 is modular. Our main tool is an idea of Taylor, which reduces the problem to that of exhibiting points on a Hilbert modular surface which are defined over a solvable extension of Q, and which satisfy certain reduction properties. As a corollary, we show that Hilbert-Blumenthal abelian surfaces over Q with good ordinary reduction at 3 and 5 are modular., Comment: 14 pages

The ABC conjecture of Masser and Oesterle' states that if (a,b,c) are coprime integers with a + b + c = 0, then sup(|a|,|b|,|c|) < c_e (rad(abc))^{1+e} for any e > 0. Oesterle' has observed that if the ABC conjecture holds for all (a,b,c) with 16 | abc, then the full ABC conjecture holds.
