The first stellarator design was a simple tube of plasma twisted and closed on itself in the form of a figure-8. The line of such devices, however, was quickly ended over concerns related to plasma stability. We revisit the figure-8 concept, re-imagined as a modern optimized stellarator, and find the potential for a high degree of stability, as well as exceptionally simple construction. In particular, the design that we find admits planar coils, and is the first quasi-isodynamic stellarator design to have this property. Our work is made possible by recent theoretical progress in the near-axis theory of quasi-isodynamic stellarators, combined with fundamental progress in the numerical solution of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic equilibria that cannot be well represented using traditional cylindrical coordinates.

A single-field-period quasi-isodynamic stellarator configuration is presented. This configuration, which resembles a twisted strip, is obtained by the method of direct construction, that is, it is found via an expansion in the distance from the magnetic axis. Its discovery, however, relied on an additional step involving numerical optimization, performed within the space of near-axis configurations defined by a set of adjustable magnetic-field parameters. This optimization, completed in 30 seconds on a single cpu core using the SIMSOPT code, yields a solution with excellent confinement, as measured by the conventional figure of merit for neoclassical transport, effective ripple, at a modest aspect ratio of eight. The optimization parameters that led to this configuration are described, its confinement properties are assessed, and a set of magnetic-field coils is found. The resulting transport at low collisionality is much smaller than that of W7-X, and the device needs significantly fewer coils thanks to the reduced number of field periods., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Nine stellarator configurations, three quasiaxisymmetric, three quasihelically symmetric and three non-quasisymmetric are scaled to ARIES-CS size and analyzed for energetic particle content. The best performing configurations with regard to energetic particle confinement also perform the best on the neoclassical {\Gamma}c metric, which attempts to align contours of the second adiabatic invariant with flux surfaces. Quasisymmetric configurations that simultaneously perform well on {\Gamma}c and quasisymmetry have the best overall confinement, with collisional losses under 3%, approaching the performance of ITER with ferritic inserts., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 1 Table

A new optimized quasihelically symmetric configuration is described that has the desir-able properties of improved energetic particle confinement, reduced turbulent transportby 3D shaping, and non-resonant divertor capabilities. The configuration presented in thispaper is explicitly optimized for quasihelical symmetry, energetic particle confinement,neoclassical confinement, and stability near the axis. Post optimization, the configurationwas evaluated for its performance with regard to energetic particle transport, idealmagnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability at various values of plasma pressure, and iontemperature gradient instability induced turbulent transport. The effect of discrete coilson various confinement figures of merit, including energetic particle confinement, aredetermined by generating single-filament coils for the configuration. Preliminary divertoranalysis shows that coils can be created that do not interfere with expansion of thevessel volume near the regions of outgoing heat flux, thus demonstrating the possibilityof operating a non-resonant divertor., Comment: 13 figures, 3 tables

It is shown that the magnetic-field coils of a stellarator can, at least in principle, be substantially simplified by the use of permanent magnets. Such magnets cannot create toroidal magnetic flux but they can be used to shape the plasma and thus to create poloidal flux and rotational transform, thereby easing the requirements on the magnetic-field coils. As an example, a quasiaxisymmetric stellarator configuration is constructed with only 8 circular coils (all identical) and permanent magnets.

A novel, compact, quasi-axisymmetric configuration is presented which exhibits low fast-particle losses and is stable to ideal MHD instabilities. The design has fast-particle loss rates below 8\% for flux surfaces within the half-radius, and is shown to have an MHD-stability limit of a normalised pressure of $\langle\beta\rangle=3\%$ where $\langle\beta\rangle$ is volume averaged. The flux surfaces at various plasma betas and currents as calculated using the SPEC equilibrium code are presented. Neoclassical transport coefficients are shown to be similar to an equivalent tokamak, with a distinct banana regime at half-radius. An initial coil design study is presented to assess the feasibility of this configuration as a fusion-relevant experiment.
