Cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) enables the control of light-matter interactions at the single-photon level, rendering it a key component of many quantum technologies. Its practical realization, however, is complex since it involves placing individual quantum emitters close to mirror surfaces within a high-finesse cavity. In this work, we propose a cavity QED architecture fully based on atoms trapped in free space. In particular, we show that a pair of two-dimensional, ordered arrays of atoms can be described by conventional cavity QED parameters. Such an atom-array cavity exhibits the same cooperativity as a conventional counterpart with matching mirror specifications even though the cavity coupling strength and decay rate are modified by the narrow bandwidth of the atoms. We estimate that an array cavity composed of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms in an optical lattice can reach a cooperativity of about $10$. This value can be increased suppressing atomic motion with larger trap depths and may exceed $10^4$ with an ideal placement of the atoms. To reduce the experimental complexity of our scheme, we propose a spatially dependent AC Stark shift as an alternative to curving the arrays, which may be of independent interest. In addition to presenting a promising platform for cavity QED, our work creates opportunities for exploring novel phenomena based on the intrinsic nonlinearity of atom arrays and the possibility to dynamically control them.

The ability to efficiently prepare ground states of quantum Hamiltonians via adiabatic protocols is typically limited by the smallest energy gap encountered during the quantum evolution. This presents a key obstacle for quantum simulation and realizations of adiabatic quantum algorithms in large systems, particularly when the adiabatic gap vanishes exponentially with system size. Using QuEra's Aquila programmable quantum simulator based on Rydberg atom arrays, we experimentally demonstrate a method to circumvent such limitations. Specifically, we develop and test a "sweep-quench-sweep" quantum algorithm in which the incorporation of a quench step serves as a remedy to the diverging adiabatic timescale. These quenches introduce a macroscopic reconfiguration between states separated by an extensively large Hamming distance, akin to quantum many-body scars. Our experiments show that this approach significantly outperforms the adiabatic algorithm, illustrating that such quantum quench algorithms can provide a shortcut to adiabaticity for large-scale many-body quantum systems.

We propose and analyze a family of approximately-symmetric neural networks for quantum spin liquid problems. These tailored architectures are parameter-efficient, scalable, and significantly out-perform existing symmetry-unaware neural network architectures. Utilizing the mixed-field toric code model, we demonstrate that our approach is competitive with the state-of-the-art tensor network and quantum Monte Carlo methods. Moreover, at the largest system sizes (N=480), our method allows us to explore Hamiltonians with sign problems beyond the reach of both quantum Monte Carlo and finite-size matrix-product states. The network comprises an exactly symmetric block following a non-symmetric block, which we argue learns a transformation of the ground state analogous to quasiadiabatic continuation. Classical simulation of quantum systems plays an important role in the study of many-body phenomena and in the benchmarking and verification of quantum technologies. Exact simulation is often limited to small systems because the dimension of the Hilbert space increases exponentially with the size of the system. For systems that possess a high degree of symmetry, however, classical simulation can reach much larger sizes. Here, we consider an ensemble of strongly interacting atoms with permutation symmetry, enabling the simulation of dynamics of hundreds of atoms at arbitrarily long evolution times. The system is realized by an ensemble of three-level atoms, where one of the levels corresponds to a highly excited Rydberg state. In the limit of all-to-all Rydberg blockade, the Hamiltonian is invariant under permutation of the atoms. Using techniques from representation theory, we construct a block-diagonal form of the Hamiltonian, where the size of the largest block increases only linearly with the system size. We apply this formalism to derive efficient pulse sequences to prepare arbitrary permutation-invariant quantum states. Moreover, we study the quantum dynamics following a quench, uncovering a parameter regime in which the system thermalizes slowly and exhibits pronounced revivals. Our results create new opportunities for the experimental and theoretical study of large interacting and nonintegrable quantum systems.

Many quantum algorithms rely on the measurement of complex quantum amplitudes. Standard approaches to obtain the phase information, such as the Hadamard test, give rise to large overheads due to the need for global controlled-unitary operations. We introduce a quantum algorithm based on complex analysis that overcomes this problem for amplitudes that are a continuous function of time. Our method only requires the implementation of real-time evolution and a shallow circuit that approximates a short imaginary-time evolution. We show that the method outperforms the Hadamard test in terms of circuit depth and that it is suitable for current noisy quantum computers when combined with a simple error-mitigation strategy.

Classical optimization problems can be solved by adiabatically preparing the ground state of a quantum Hamiltonian that encodes the problem. The performance of this approach is determined by the smallest gap encountered during the evolution. Here, we consider the maximum independent set problem, which can be efficiently encoded in the Hamiltonian describing a Rydberg atom array. We present a general construction of instances of the problem for which the minimum gap decays superexponentially with system size, implying a superexponentially large time to solution via adiabatic evolution. The small gap arises from locally independent choices, which cause the system to initially evolve and localize into a configuration far from the solution in terms of Hamming distance. We investigate remedies to this problem. Specifically, we show that quantum quenches in these models can exhibit signatures of quantum many-body scars, which in turn, can circumvent the superexponential gaps. Realizing strong nonlinear optical responses is a long-standing goal of both fundamental and technological importance. Recently significant efforts have focused on exploring excitons in solids as a pathway to achieving nonlinearities even down to few-photon levels. However, a crucial tradeoff arises as strong light-matter interactions require large oscillator strength and short radiative lifetime of the excitons, which limits their interaction strength and nonlinearity. Here we experimentally demonstrate strong nonlinear optical responses by exploiting the coupling between excitons and carriers in an atomically thin semiconductor of trilayer tungsten diselenide. By controlling the electric field and electrostatic doping of the trilayer, we observe the hybridization between intralayer and interlayer excitons along with the formation of Fermi polarons due to the interactions between excitons and free carriers. We find substantial optical nonlinearity can be achieved under both continuous wave and pulsed laser excitation, where the resonance of the hole-doped Fermi polaron blueshifts by as much as ~10 meV. Intriguingly, we observe a remarkable asymmetry in the optical nonlinearity between electron and hole doping, which is tunable by the applied electric field. We attribute these features to the strong interactions between excitons and free charges with optically induced valley polarization. Our results establish that atomically thin heterostructures are a highly versatile platform for engineering nonlinear optical response with applications to classical and quantum optoelectronics, and open avenues for exploring many-body physics in hybrid Fermionic-Bosonic systems., Comment: 4 figures with SI

Quantum simulation is one of the most promising scientific applications of quantum computers. Due to decoherence and noise in current devices, it is however challenging to perform digital quantum simulation in a regime that is intractable with classical computers. In this work, we propose an experimental protocol for probing dynamics and equilibrium properties on near-term digital quantum computers. As a key ingredient of our work, we show that it is possible to study thermalization even with a relatively coarse Trotter decomposition of the Hamiltonian evolution of interest. Even though the step size is too large to permit a rigorous bound on the Trotter error, we observe that the system prethermalizes in accordance with previous results for Floquet systems. The dynamics closely resemble the thermalization of the model underlying the Trotterization up to long times. We extend the reach of our approach by developing an error mitigation scheme based on measurement and rescaling of survival probabilities. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the entire protocol, we apply it to the two-dimensional XY model and numerically verify its performance with realistic noise parameters for superconducting quantum devices. Our proposal thus provides a route to achieving quantum advantage for relevant problems in condensed matter physics.

A number of labeling systems based on text have been proposed to help monitor work on the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Here, we present a systematic comparison of systems using a variety of text sources and show that systems differ considerably in their specificity (i.e., true-positive rate) and sensitivity (i.e., true-negative rate), have systematic biases (e.g., are more sensitive to specific SDGs relative to others), and are susceptible to the type and amount of text analyzed. We then show that an ensemble model that pools labeling systems alleviates some of these limitations, exceeding the labeling performance of all currently available systems. We conclude that researchers and policymakers should care about the choice of labeling system and that ensemble methods should be favored when drawing conclusions about the absolute and relative prevalence of work on the SDGs based on automated methods.

Recent progress in the development of quantum technologies has enabled the direct investigation of dynamics of increasingly complex quantum many-body systems. This motivates the study of the complexity of classical algorithms for this problem in order to benchmark quantum simulators and to delineate the regime of quantum advantage. Here we present classical algorithms for approximating the dynamics of local observables and nonlocal quantities such as the Loschmidt echo, where the evolution is governed by a local Hamiltonian. For short times, their computational cost scales polynomially with the system size and the inverse of the approximation error. In the case of local observables, the proposed algorithm has a better dependence on the approximation error than algorithms based on the Lieb-Robinson bound. Our results use cluster expansion techniques adapted to the dynamical setting, for which we give a novel proof of their convergence. This has important physical consequences besides our efficient algorithms. Techniques to mold the flow of light on subwavelength scales enable fundamentally new optical systems and device applications. The realization of programmable, active optical systems with fast, tunable components is among the outstanding challenges in the field. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a few-pixel beam steering device based on electrostatic gate control of excitons in an atomically thin semiconductor with strong light-matter interactions. By combining the high reflectivity of a MoSe2 monolayer with a graphene split-gate geometry, we shape the wavefront phase profile to achieve continuously tunable beam deflection with a range of 10$^\circ$, two-dimensional beam steering, and switching times down to 1.6 nanoseconds. Our approach opens the door for a new class of atomically thin optical systems, such as rapidly switchable beam arrays and quantum metasurfaces operating at their fundamental thickness limit.

Monitoring progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is important for both academic and non-academic organizations. Existing approaches to monitoring SDGs have focused on specific data types; namely, publications listed in proprietary research databases. We present the text2sdg package for the R language, a user-friendly, open-source package that detects SDGs in any kind of text data using different existing or custom-made query systems. The text2sdg package thereby facilitates the monitoring of SDGs for a wide array of text sources and provides a much-needed basis for validating and improving extant methods to detect SDGs from text.

Drawing independent samples from a probability distribution is an important computational problem with applications in Monte Carlo algorithms, machine learning, and statistical physics. The problem can in principle be solved on a quantum computer by preparing a quantum state that encodes the entire probability distribution followed by a projective measurement. We investigate the complexity of adiabatically preparing such quantum states for the Gibbs distributions of various classical models including the Ising chain, hard-sphere models on different graphs, and a model encoding the unstructured search problem. By constructing a parent Hamiltonian, whose ground state is the desired quantum state, we relate the asymptotic scaling of the state preparation time to the nature of transitions between distinct quantum phases. These insights enable us to identify adiabatic paths that achieve a quantum speedup over classical Markov chain algorithms. In addition, we show that parent Hamiltonians for the problem of sampling from independent sets on certain graphs can be naturally realized with neutral atoms interacting via highly excited Rydberg states., Comment: Companion paper of arXiv:2005.14059

Excitons are composite bosons that can feature spin singlet and triplet states. In usual semiconductors, without an additional spin-flip mechanism, triplet excitons are extremely inefficient optical emitters. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), with their large spin-orbit coupling, have been of special interest for valleytronic applications for their coupling of circularly polarized light to excitons with selective valley and spin$^{1-4}$. In atomically thin MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ TMD van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, the unique atomic registry of vdW layers provides a quasi-angular momentum to interlayer excitons$^{5,6}$, enabling emission from otherwise dark spin triplet excitons. Here, we report electrically tunable spin singlet and triplet exciton emission from atomically aligned TMD heterostructures. We confirm the spin configurations of the light-emitting excitons employing magnetic fields to measure effective exciton g-factors. The interlayer tunneling current across the TMD vdW heterostructure enables the electrical generation of singlet and triplet exciton emission in this atomically thin PN junction. We demonstrate electrically tunability between the singlet and triplet excitons that are generated by charge injection. We develop a quantum optical formalism to treat a two-dimensional array of atoms placed in an optical cavity. Importantly, and in contrast to typical treatments, we account for cooperative dipole-dipole effects mediated by the interaction of the atoms with the outside, non-cavity-confined modes. Based on the observation that scattering to these modes is largely inhibited due to these cooperative effects, we construct a generic formalism, independent of the specific cavity structure, and apply it to an array of non-saturated atoms. By further considering the atomic motion, we show that the inhibited damping can lead to a favorable scaling of the optomechanical parameters of an atom-array membrane placed within a cavity. The developed formalism lays the basis for further investigation of many-body QED with atom arrays in transversely confined geometries.

We consider a quantum optomechanical scheme wherein an ordered two-dimensional array of laser-trapped atoms is used as a movable membrane. The extremely light mass of the atoms yields very strong optomechanical coupling, while their spatial order largely eliminates scattering losses. We show that this combination opens the way for quantum optomechanical nonlinearities, well within the ultimate single-photon strong-coupling regime. As an example, we analyze the possibility to observe optomechanically induced quantum effects such as photon blockade and time-delayed non-classical correlations. We discuss novel opportunities opened by the optomechanical backaction on the internal states of the array atoms.

Efficient sampling from a classical Gibbs distribution is an important computational problem with applications ranging from statistical physics over Monte Carlo and optimization algorithms to machine learning. We introduce a family of quantum algorithms that provide unbiased samples by preparing a state encoding the entire Gibbs distribution. We show that this approach leads to a speedup over a classical Markov chain algorithm for several examples including the Ising model and sampling from weighted independent sets of two different graphs. Our approach connects computational complexity with phase transitions, providing a physical interpretation of quantum speedup. Moreover, it opens the door to exploring potentially useful sampling algorithms on near-term quantum devices as the algorithm for sampling from independent sets on certain graphs can be naturally implemented using Rydberg atom arrays.

Here we present a method for the simultaneous segmentation of white matter lesions and normal-appearing neuroanatomical structures from multi-contrast brain MRI scans of multiple sclerosis patients. The method integrates a novel model for white matter lesions into a previously validated generative model for whole-brain segmentation. By using separate models for the shape of anatomical structures and their appearance in MRI, the algorithm can adapt to data acquired with different scanners and imaging protocols without retraining. We validate the method using four disparate datasets, showing robust performance in white matter lesion segmentation while simultaneously segmenting dozens of other brain structures. We further demonstrate that the contrast-adaptive method can also be safely applied to MRI scans of healthy controls, and replicate previously documented atrophy patterns in deep gray matter structures in MS. The algorithm is publicly available as part of the open-source neuroimaging package FreeSurfer.

We investigate two-dimensional atomic arrays as a platform to modify the electromagnetic environment of individual quantum emitters. Specifically, we demonstrate that control over emission linewidths, resonant frequency shifts, and local enhancement of driving fields is possible due to strong dipole-dipole interactions within ordered, subwavelength atom configurations. We demonstrate that these effects can be used to dramatically enhance coherent dipole-dipole interactions between distant quantum emitters within an atom array. Possible experimental realizations and potential applications are discussed.

Structural engineering of van der Waals heterostructures via stacking and twisting has recently been used to create moir\'e superlattices, enabling the realization of new optical and electronic properties in solid-state systems. In particular, moir\'e lattices in twisted bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been shown to lead to exciton trapping, host Mott insulating and superconducting states, and act as unique Hubbard systems whose correlated electronic states can be detected and manipulated optically. Structurally, these twisted heterostructures also feature atomic reconstruction and domain formation. Unfortunately, due to the nanoscale sizes (~10 nm) of typical moir\'e domains, the effects of atomic reconstruction on the electronic and excitonic properties of these heterostructures could not be investigated systematically and have often been ignored. Here, we use near-0$^o$ twist angle MoSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$ bilayers with large rhombohedral AB/BA domains to directly probe excitonic properties of individual domains with far-field optics. We show that this system features broken mirror/inversion symmetry, with the AB and BA domains supporting interlayer excitons with out-of-plane (z) electric dipole moments in opposite directions. The dipole orientation of ground-state $\Gamma$-K interlayer excitons (X$_{I,1}$) can be flipped with electric fields, while higher-energy K-K interlayer excitons (X$_{I,2}$) undergo field-asymmetric hybridization with intralayer K-K excitons (X$_0$). Our study reveals the profound impacts of crystal symmetry on TMD excitons and points to new avenues for realizing topologically nontrivial systems, exotic metasurfaces, collective excitonic phases, and quantum emitter arrays via domain-pattern engineering., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures in main text, 6 figures in supplementary information

The twist degree of freedom provides a powerful new tool for engineering the electrical and optical properties of van der Waals heterostructures. Here, we show that the twist angle can be used to control the spin-valley properties of transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers by changing the momentum alignment of the valleys in the two layers. Specifically, we observe that the interlayer excitons in twisted WSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ bilayers exhibit a high (>60%) degree of circular polarization (DOCP) and long valley lifetimes (>40 ns) at zero electric and magnetic fields. The valley lifetime can be tuned by more than three orders of magnitude via electrostatic doping, enabling switching of the DOCP from ~80% in the n-doped regime to <5% in the p-doped regime. Wigner crystals are prime candidates for the realization of regular electron lattices under minimal requirements on external control and electronics. However, several technical challenges have prevented their detailed experimental investigation and applications to date. We propose an implementation of two-dimensional electron lattices for quantum simulation of Ising spin systems based on self-assembled Wigner crystals in transition-metal dichalcogenides. We show that these semiconductors allow for minimally invasive all-optical detection schemes of charge ordering and total spin. For incident light with optimally chosen beam parameters and polarization, we predict a strong dependence of the transmitted and reflected signals on the underlying lattice periodicity, thus revealing the charge order inherent in Wigner crystals. At the same time, the selection rules in transition-metal dichalcogenides provide direct access to the spin degree of freedom via Faraday rotation measurements., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

Large spin-orbit coupling in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) couples circularly polarized light to excitons with selective valley and spin. Here, we demonstrate electrically controlled brightening of spin-triplet interlayer excitons in a MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ TMD van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure. The atomic registry of vdW layers in TMD heterostructures provides a quasi-angular momentum to interlayer excitons, enabling emission from otherwise dark spin-triplet excitons. Employing magnetic field, we show that photons emitted by triplet and singlet excitons in the same valley have opposite chirality. We also measure effective exciton g-factors, presenting direct and quantitative evidence of triplet interlayer excitons. We further demonstrate gate tuning of the relative photoluminescence intensity between singlet and triplet charged excitons. Electrically controlled emission between singlet and triplet excitons enables a route for optoelectronic devices that can configure excitonic chiral, spin, and valley quantum states.

Moir\'e superlattices in twisted van der Waals materials constitute a promising platform for engineering electronic and optical properties. However, a major obstacle to fully understanding these systems and harnessing their potential is the limited ability to correlate the local moir\'e structure with optical properties. By using a recently developed scanning electron microscopy technique to image twisted WSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ bilayers, we directly correlate increasing moir\'e periodicity with the emergence of two distinct exciton species. These can be tuned individually through electrostatic gating, and feature different valley coherence properties. Our observations can be understood as resulting from an array of two intralayer exciton species residing in alternating locations in the superlattice, and illuminate the influence of the moir\'e potential on lateral exciton motion. We demonstrate a new approach for dynamically manipulating the optical response of an atomically thin semiconductor, a monolayer of MoSe2, by suspending it over a metallic mirror. First, we show that suspended van der Waals heterostructures incorporating a MoSe2 monolayer host spatially homogeneous, lifetime-broadened excitons. Then, we interface this nearly ideal excitonic system with a metallic mirror and demonstrate control over the exciton-photon coupling. Specifically, by electromechanically changing the distance between the heterostructure and the mirror, thereby changing the local photonic density of states in a controllable and reversible fashion, we show that both the absorption and emission properties of the excitons can be dynamically modulated. This electromechanical control over exciton dynamics in a mechanically flexible, atomically thin semiconductor opens up new avenues in cavity quantum optomechanics, nonlinear quantum optics, and topological photonics., Comment: accepted version

Optically generated excitons dictate the absorption and emission spectrum of doped semiconductor transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers. We show that upon increasing the electron density, the elementary optical excitations develop a roton-like dispersion, evidenced by a shift of the lowest energy state to a finite momentum on the order of the Fermi momentum. This effect emerges due to Pauli exclusion between excitons and the electron Fermi sea, but the robustness of the roton minimum in these systems is a direct consequence of the long-range nature of the Coulomb interaction and the nonlocal dielectric screening characteristic of monolayers. Excitons in semiconductors, bound pairs of excited electrons and holes, can form the basis for new classes of quantum optoelectronic devices. A van der Waals heterostructure built from atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) enables the formation of excitons from electrons and holes in distinct layers, producing interlayer excitons with large binding energy and a long lifetime. Employing heterostructures of monolayer TMDs, we realize optical and electrical generation of long-lived neutral and charged interlayer excitons. We demonstrate the transport of neutral interlayer excitons across the whole sample that can be controlled by excitation power and gate electrodes. We also realize the drift motion of charged interlayer excitons using Ohmic-contacted devices. The electrical generation and control of excitons provides a new route for realizing quantum manipulation of bosonic composite particles with complete electrical tunability.

We show that a nonlinear optical response associated with a resonant, atomically thin material can be dramatically enhanced by placing it in front of a partially reflecting mirror, rendering otherwise weakly nonlinear systems suitable for experiments and applications involving quantum nonlinear optics. Our approach exploits the nonlinear response of long-lived polariton resonances that arise at particular distances between the material and the mirror. The scheme is entirely based on free-space optics, eliminating the need for cavities or complex nanophotonic structures. Transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers are promising candidates for exploring new electronic and optical phenomena and for realizing atomically thin optoelectronic devices. They host tightly bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) that can be efficiently excited by resonant light fields. Here, we demonstrate that a single monolayer of molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) can dramatically modify light transmission near the excitonic resonance, acting as an electrically switchable mirror that reflects up to 85% of incident light at cryogenic temperatures. This high reflectance is a direct consequence of the excellent coherence properties of excitons in this atomically thin semiconductor, encapsulated by hexagonal boron nitride. Furthermore, we show that the MoSe2 monolayer exhibits power- and wavelength-dependent nonlinearities that stem from exciton-based lattice heating in the case of continuous-wave excitation and exciton-exciton interactions when fast, pulsed laser excitation is used. Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers are direct bandgap semiconductors that feature tightly bound excitons, strong spin-orbit coupling, and spin-valley degrees of freedom. Depending on the spin configuration of the electron-hole pairs, intra-valley excitons of TMD monolayers can be either optically bright or dark. Dark excitons involve nominally spin-forbidden optical transitions with zero in-plane transition dipole moment, making their detection with conventional far-field optical techniques challenging. Here, we introduce a new method for probing the optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials via near-field coupling to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which selectively enhances optical transitions with dipole moments normal to the 2D plane. We utilize this method to directly detect dark excitons in monolayer TMDs. When a WSe2 monolayer is placed on top of a single-crystal silver film, its emission into near-field-coupled SPPs displays new spectral features whose energies and dipole orientations are consistent with dark neutral and charged excitons. It was previously reported, that temperature may significantly influence neural dynamics on different levels of brain modelling. Due to this fact, while creating the model in computational neuroscience we would like to make it scalable for wide-range of various brain temperatures. However currently, because of a lack of experimental data and an absence of analytical model describing temperature influence on synapses, it is not possible to include temperature effects on multi-neuron modelling level. In this paper, we propose first step to deal with this problem: new analytical model of AMPA-type synaptic conductance, which is able to include temperature effects in low-frequency stimulations. It was constructed on basis of Markov model description of AMPA receptor kinetics and few simplifications motivated both experimentally and from Monte Carlo simulation of synaptic transmission. The model may be used for efficient and accurate implementation of temperature effects on AMPA receptor conductance in large scale neural network simulations. We consider light scattering off a two-dimensional (2D) dipolar array and show how it can be tailored by properly choosing the lattice constant of the order of the incident wavelength. In particular, we demonstrate that such arrays can operate as nearly perfect mirrors for a wide range of incident angles and frequencies close to the individual atomic resonance. These results can be understood in terms of the cooperative resonances of the surface modes supported by the 2D array. Experimental realizations are discussed, using ultracold arrays of trapped atoms and excitons in 2D semiconductor materials, as well as potential applications ranging from atomically thin metasurfaces to single photon nonlinear optics and nanomechanics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures + Supplemental Document

Adiabatic quantum algorithms represent a promising approach to universal quantum computation. Whilst in a closed system these algorithms are limited by avoided level crossings, where the gap becomes exponentially small in the system size, their robustness in open systems remains unresolved. We study the dynamics in the proximity of such an avoided level crossing associated with the adiabatic quantum search algorithm in a quantum system that is coupled to a generic environment. At zero temperature, we find that the algorithm remains scalable provided the noise spectral density of the environment decays sufficiently fast at low frequencies. At finite temperature, however, scattering processes render the algorithm inefficient and no quantum speedup can be achieved. Semiconductor quantum dots have emerged as promising candidates for implementation of quantum information processing since they allow for a quantum interface between stationary spin qubits and propagating single photons. In the meanwhile, transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers have moved to the forefront of solid-state research due to their unique band structure featuring a large band gap with degenerate valleys and non-zero Berry curvature. Here we report the observation of quantum dots in monolayer tungsten-diselenide with an energy that is 20 to 100 meV lower than that of two dimensional excitons. Photon antibunching in second-order photon correlations unequivocally demonstrates the zero-dimensional anharmonic nature of these quantum emitters. The strong anisotropic magnetic response of the spatially localized emission peaks strongly indicates that radiative recombination stems from localized excitons that inherit their electronic properties from the host TMD. The large $\sim$ 1 meV zero-field splitting shows that the quantum dots have singlet ground states and an anisotropic confinement most likely induced by impurities or defects in the host TMD. Electrical control in van der Waals heterostructures and robust spin-valley degree of freedom render TMD quantum dots promising for quantum information processing.

A monolayer of a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) such as WSe$_2$ is a two-dimensional (2D) direct band-gap valley-semiconductor having an effective Honeycomb lattice structure with broken inversion symmetry. The inequivalent valleys in the Brillouin zone could be selectively addressed using circularly-polarized light fields, suggesting the possibility for magneto-optical measurement and manipulation of the valley pseudospin degree of freedom. Here we report such experiments that demonstrate the valley Zeeman effect -- strongly anisotropic lifting of the degeneracy of the valley pseudospin degree of freedom using an external magnetic field. While the valley-splitting measured using the exciton transition is consistent with the difference of the conduction and valence band orbital magnetic moments, the trion transition exhibits an unexpectedly large valley Zeeman effect which cannot be understood using an independent electron-hole picture. Instead, we find an explanation using the recently predicted large Berry curvature and the associated magnetic moment for the electron-hole exchange interaction modified trion dispersion. Our results raise the possibility of observing optical excitation induced valley Hall effect in monolayer TMDs or topological states of photons strongly coupled to trion excitations in a microcavity.
