The stability of toroidal magnetic fields within the interior of stars remains a significant unresolved issue in contemporary astrophysics. In this study, we combine a nonlocal linear analysis with 3D direct numerical simulations to examine the instability of toroidal fields within nonrotating, stably stratified stellar interiors in spherical geometry. Both analyses start from an equilibrium solution derived from balancing the Lorentz force with an anisotropic component of the fluid pressure, which is unstable to the (nonaxisymmetric) Tayler instability, and account for the combined effects of gravity and thermal diffusion. The numerical simulations incorporate finite magnetic resistivity and fluid viscosity while reaching a regime of highly stable stratification that has never been explored before. The linear analysis, which is global in the radial direction, shows that gravity significantly reduces the growth rate of the instability and uncovers the importance of unstable modes with low radial wavenumbers operating at low latitudes. The simulations trace the entire evolution of the instability from the linear to the nonlinear phase and strongly corroborate the findings of the linear analysis. Our results reveal that in highly stratified stellar interiors, the newly configured magnetic fields remain unstable only on the thermal diffusion timescale. Combining the linear analysis results with stellar evolution models of low-mass stars, we find that the limiting toroidal field strength for Tayler instability in red giant cores decreases with the stellar evolution. The predicted field strengths align with the ones expected from recent asteroseismic observations, suggesting that the observed fields may be remnants of a Tayler instability during the transition from the main sequence to the giant phase., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, to be submitted to A&A

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the benchmark in the European Union (EU) for privacy and data protection standards. Substantial research has been conducted in the requirements engineering (RE) literature investigating the elicitation, representation, and verification of privacy requirements in GDPR. Software systems including mobile apps must comply with the GDPR. With the growing pervasiveness of mobile apps and their increasing demand for personal data, privacy concerns have acquired further interest within the software engineering (SE) community at large. Despite the extensive literature on GDPR-relevant privacy concerns in mobile apps, there is no secondary study that describes, analyzes, and categorizes the current focus. Research gaps and persistent challenges are thus left unnoticed. In this article, we aim to systematically review existing primary studies highlighting various GDPR concepts and how these concepts are addressed in mobile apps research. The objective is to reconcile the existing work on GDPR in the RE literature with the research on GDPR-related privacy concepts in mobile apps in the SE literature. Our findings show that the current research landscape reflects a rather shallow understanding of GDPR requirements. Some GDPR concepts such as data subject rights (i.e., the rights of individuals over their personal data) are fundamental to GDPR, yet under-explored in the literature. In this article, we highlight future directions to be pursued by the SE community for supporting the development of GDPR-compliant mobile apps.

Advancing human-robot communication is crucial for autonomous systems operating in dynamic environments, where accurate real-time interpretation of human signals is essential. RoboCup provides a compelling scenario for testing these capabilities, requiring robots to understand referee gestures and whistle with minimal network reliance. Using the NAO robot platform, this study implements a two-stage pipeline for gesture recognition through keypoint extraction and classification, alongside continuous convolutional neural networks (CCNNs) for efficient whistle detection. We provide non-trivial checks of the recently proposed duality between double-scaled SYK and a 2d dilaton gravity model with sine potential, studying the path integral at one-loop level. Specifically, we compute the logarithmic correction to the free energy of sine-dilaton gravity and, up to potential ordering ambiguities, we find a match with the corresponding quantity in double-scaled SYK. The computation relies on the description of sine-dilaton gravity in terms of a version of the q-Schwarzian theory, the quantum deformation of the standard Schwarzian model dual to JT gravity. A crucial aspect of the calculation is selecting the correct Hartle-Hawking vacuum for the gravitational theory, which implies a specific choice of boundary conditions for the one-loop determinant, computed using a generalization of the Gel'fand-Yaglom's theorem. We also evaluate the gravitational one-loop correction to the boundary to boundary propagator of a non-minimally coupled matter field in the bulk theory, showing a perfect agreement with the corresponding quantum correction of matter correlators in double-scaled SYK.

Magnetic Josephson Junctions (MJJs) are a special class of hybrid systems where antagonistic correlations coexist, thus providing a key for advances in weak superconductivity, superconducting spintronics and quantum computation. So far, the memory properties of MJJs have been mostly investigated in view of digital electronics and for spintronic devices at liquid-helium temperature. At the operating temperature of quantum circuits, a magnetic order can rise in a Superconductor (S) at the S/Ferromagnet (F) interface, i.e., the inverse proximity effect (IPE), thus leading to a significant modification of the magnetic field patterns in MJJs. In this work, we have carried out a comparative investigation of the magnetic behavior of tunnel MJJs with a strong ferromagnetic layer inserted in the layout of both Nb and Al JJs, respectively. The comparative analysis validates the crucial role of the temperature, the fundamental scaling energies of S/F coupling systems, and the transparency of the S/F interface. We explore the behaviour emerging from learning agents repeatedly interacting strategically for a wide range of learning dynamics that includes projected gradient, replicator and log-barrier dynamics. Going beyond the better-understood classes of potential games and zero-sum games, we consider the setting of a general repeated game with finite recall, for different forms of monitoring. Understanding and predicting the structure and evolution of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the heliosphere remains one of the most sought-after goals in heliophysics and space weather research. A powerful tool for improving current knowledge and capabilities consists of multi-spacecraft observations of the same event, which take place when two or more spacecraft fortuitously find themselves in the path of a single CME. Multi-probe events can not only supply useful data to evaluate the large-scale of CMEs from 1D in-situ trajectories, but also provide additional constraints and validation opportunities for CME propagation models. In this work, we analyse and simulate the coronal and heliospheric evolution of a slow, streamer-blowout CME that erupted on 23 September 2021 and was encountered in situ by four spacecraft approximately equally distributed in heliocentric distance between 0.4 and 1 au. We employ the Open Solar Physics Rapid Ensemble Information (OSPREI) modelling suite in ensemble mode to predict the CME arrival and structure in a hindcast fashion and to compute the "best-fit" solutions at the different spacecraft individually and together. We find that the spread in the predicted quantities increases with heliocentric distance, suggesting that there may be a maximum (angular and radial) separation between an inner and an outer probe beyond which estimates of the in-situ magnetic field orientation (parameterised by flux rope model geometry) increasingly diverge. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are powerful models that can manage complex data sources and their interconnection links. One of GNNs' main drawbacks is their lack of interpretability, which limits their application in sensitive fields. In this paper, we introduce a new methodology involving graph communities to address the interpretability of graph classification problems. The proposed method, called GECo, exploits the idea that if a community is a subset of graph nodes densely connected, this property should play a role in graph classification. This is reasonable, especially if we consider the message-passing mechanism, which is the basic mechanism of GNNs. GECo analyzes the contribution to the classification result of the communities in the graph, building a mask that highlights graph-relevant structures. GECo is tested for Graph Convolutional Networks on six artificial and four real-world graph datasets and is compared to the main explainability methods such as PGMExplainer, PGExplainer, GNNExplainer, and SubgraphX using four different metrics. The obtained results outperform the other methods for artificial graph datasets and most real-world datasets.

The discovery of topological phases of matter and topological boundary states had tremendous impact on condensed matter physics and photonics, where topological phases are defined via energy bands, giving rise to topological band theory. However, topological systems that cannot be described by band topology but still support non-trivial boundary states are little-known and largely unexplored. Here, we uncover a new kind of topological phase of matter named "multi-topological phase" (MTP) that features multiple sets of boundary states, where each set is associated with one distinct topological invariant. Unlike conventional topological phase transitions, the MTP transitions can occur without band-gap closing. We present typical examples of MTPs in a one-dimensional topological insulator and a two-dimensional higher-order topological insulator, where the systems are otherwise trivial according to band topology. Furthermore, MTPs can exist also in indirectly gapped Chern insulators, beyond the regime where the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence predicts the existence of boundary states. Experimentally, we demonstrate the first two examples of MTPs in laser-written photonic lattices. We study the interplay between topology and disorder in the disodered Kitaev model with long range pairing, connected to two metallic leads exchanging particles with external Lindblad baths. We study how the phase diagram of the system is affected by the disorder by monitoring the subgap modes at increasing disorder, by computing the current flowing across the superconductor at a finite voltage bias between the baths, and by looking at the normal, single particle lead correlations across the Kitaev long range chain. In particular, we evidence the reentrant behavior of the massive, topological phase at limited values of the disorder strength, that has no analog in the disordered, short range pairing Kitaev model, thus rising the question of whether it is possible to recover a disorder triggered direct transition between the massive and the short range topological phase of the long range pairing Kitaev model., Comment: 16 pages, 10 .png figures

We take up the investigation we had to put in the future-work stack at the end of Sec.VB2 of Ref.2, in which we pointed out the obvious necessity to inquire about existence or absence of values of the characteristic numbers $\alpha$ and $\beta$ in correspondence to which the perfect-gas model's self gravitational effects, namely upper boundedness of the gravitational number, spiraling behavior of peripheral density, oscillating behavior of central density, and existence of multiple solutions corresponding to the same value of the gravitational number, appear also for the van der Waals' model. The development of our investigation brings to the conversion of our M$_{2}$ scheme based on a second-order differential equation into an equivalent system of two first-order differential equations that incorporates Milne's homology invariant variables. The converted scheme 1oM$_2$ turns out to be much more efficacious than the M$_{2}$ scheme in terms of numerical calculations' easiness and richness of results. We use the perfect-gas model as benchmark to test the 1oM$_2$ scheme; we re-derive familiar results and put them in a more general and rational perspective that paves the way to deal with the van der Waals' gas model. We introduce variable transformations that turn out to be the key to study (almost) analytically the monotonicity of the peripheral density with respect to variations of the gravitational number. The study brings to the proof that the gravitational number is not constrained by upper boundedness, the peripheral density does not spiral, and the central density does not oscillate for any couple of values assumed by the characteristic numbers $\alpha$ and $\beta$; however, multiple solutions corresponding to the same value of the gravitational number can exist but their genesis is completely different from that of the perfect-gas model's multiple solutions. We provide the boundary in the $\alpha,\beta$ plane between the two regions of solution's uniqueness and multiplicity. Finally, by the application of the 1oM$_2$ scheme, we resolve the mystery of the missing steep curve corresponding to Aronson and Hansen's 60km case [29] that we unsuccessfully chased in Ref.2 and we even detect another solution that had somehow escaped the attention of those authors., Comment: 21 pages, 26 figures, 1 table

Entanglement is an essential ingredient in many quantum communication protocols. In particular, entanglement can be exploited in quantum key distribution (QKD) to generate two correlated random bit strings whose randomness is guaranteed by the nonlocal property of quantum mechanics. Most of QKD protocols tested to date rely on polarization and/or time-bin encoding. Despite compatibility with existing fiber-optic infrastructure and ease of manipulation with standard components, frequency-bin QKD have not yet been fully explored. Here we report the first demonstration of entanglement-based QKD using frequency-bin encoding. We implement the BBM92 protocol using photon pairs generated by two independent, high-finesse, ring resonators on a silicon photonic chip. We perform a passive basis selection scheme and simultaneously record sixteen projective measurements. A key finding is that frequency-bin encoding is sensitive to the random phase noise induced by thermal fluctuations of the environment. To correct for this effect, we developed a real-time adaptive phase rotation of the measurement basis, achieving stable transmission over a 26 km fiber spool with a secure key rate >= 4.5 bit/s. Our work introduces a new degree of freedom for the realization of entangled based QKD protocols in telecom networks.

We consider an infinitely extended system of fermions on a $d$-dimensional lattice with (magnetic) translation-invariant short-range interactions. We further assume that the system has a unique gapped ground state. Physically, this is a model for the bulk of a generic topological insulator at zero temperature, and we are interested in the current response of such a system to a constant external electric field. Using the non-equilibrium almost-stationary states (NEASS) approach, we prove that the longitudinal current density induced by a constant electric field of strength $\varepsilon$ is of order $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^\infty)$, i.e. the system is an insulator in the usual sense. For the Hall current density we show instead that it is linear in $\varepsilon$ up to terms of order $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^\infty)$. The proportionality factor $\sigma_\mathrm{H}$ is by definition the Hall conductivity, and we show that it is given by a generalization of the well known double commutator formula to interacting systems. As a by-product of our results, we find that the Hall conductivity is constant within gapped phases, and that for $d=2$ the relevant observable that "measures" the Hall conductivity in experiments, the Hall conductance, not only agrees with $\sigma_H$ in expectation up to $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^\infty)$, but also has vanishing variance. A notable difference to several existing results on the current response in interacting fermion systems is that we consider a macroscopic system exposed to a small constant electric field, rather than to a small voltage drop.

The drive toward automating cellular network operations has grown with the increasing complexity of these systems. Despite advancements, full autonomy currently remains out of reach due to reliance on human intervention for modeling network behaviors and defining policies to meet target requirements. Network Digital Twins (NDTs) have shown promise in enhancing network intelligence, but the successful implementation of this technology is constrained by use case-specific architectures, limiting its role in advancing network autonomy. A more capable network intelligence, or "telecommunications brain", is needed to enable seamless, autonomous management of cellular network. Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as potential enablers for this vision but face challenges in network modeling, especially in reasoning and handling diverse data types. To address these gaps, we introduce Hermes, a chain of LLM agents that uses "blueprints" for constructing NDT instances through structured and explainable logical steps. Hermes allows automatic, reliable, and accurate network modeling of diverse use cases and configurations, thus marking progress toward fully autonomous network operations.

Path planning in narrow passages is a challenging problem in various applications. Traditional planning algorithms often face challenges in complex environments like mazes and traps, where narrow entrances require special orientation control for successful navigation. In this work, we present a novel approach that combines superquadrics (SQ) representation and Voronoi diagrams to solve the narrow passage problem in both 2D and 3D environment. Our method utilizes the SQ formulation to expand obstacles, eliminating impassable passages, while Voronoi hyperplane ensures maximum clearance path. Additionally, the hyperplane provides a natural reference for robot orientation, aligning its long axis with the passage direction. We validate our framework through a 2D object retrieval task and 3D drone simulation, demonstrating that our approach outperforms classical planners and a cutting-edge drone planner by ensuring passable trajectories with maximum clearance.

Contact-rich manipulation often requires strategic interactions with objects, such as pushing to accomplish specific tasks. We propose a novel scenario where a robot inserts a book into a crowded shelf by pushing aside neighboring books to create space before slotting the new book into place. Classical planning algorithms fail in this context due to limited space and their tendency to avoid contact. Additionally, they do not handle indirectly manipulable objects or consider force interactions. Our key contributions are: i) re-framing quasi-static manipulation as a planning problem on an implicit manifold derived from equilibrium conditions; ii) utilizing an intrinsic haptic metric instead of ad-hoc cost functions; and iii) proposing an adaptive algorithm that simultaneously updates robot states, object positions, contact points, and haptic distances. We evaluate our method on such crowded bookshelf insertion task but it is a general formulation to rigid bodies manipulation tasks. We propose proxies to capture contact point and force, with superellipse to represent objects. This simplified model guarantee the differentiablity. Our framework autonomously discovers strategic wedging-in policies while our simplified contact model achieves behavior similar to real world scenarios. Kagome metals have established a new arena for correlated electron physics. To date, the predominant experimental evidence centers around unconventional charge order, nematicity, and superconductivity, while magnetic fluctuations due to electronic interactions, i.e., beyond local atomic magnetism, have largely been elusive. From ab initio design and many-body analysis, we develop a model framework of Cu-based kagome materials the simulations of which reveal unconventional magnetic order in a kagome metal. We find the challenge of locating the appropriate parameter regime for such exotic order to center around two aspects. First, the correlations implied by low-energy orbitals have to be sufficiently large to yield a dominance of magnetic fluctuations and weak to retain an itinerant parent state. Second, the kinematic kagome profile at the Fermi level demands an efficient mitigation of sublattice interference causing the suppression of magnetic fluctuations descending from electronic onsite repulsion. Satellite-based onboard data processing is crucial for time-sensitive applications requiring timely and efficient rapid response. Advances in edge artificial intelligence are shifting computational power from ground-based centers to on-orbit platforms, transforming the "sensing-communication-decision-feedback" cycle and reducing latency from acquisition to delivery. The current research presents a framework addressing the strict bandwidth, energy, and latency constraints of small satellites, focusing on maritime monitoring. The study contributes three main innovations. Firstly, it investigates the application of deep learning techniques for direct ship detection and classification from raw satellite imagery. By simplifying the onboard processing chain, our approach facilitates direct analyses without requiring computationally intensive steps such as calibration and ortho-rectification. Secondly, to address the scarcity of raw satellite data, we introduce two novel datasets, VDS2Raw and VDV2Raw, which are derived from raw data from Sentinel-2 and Vegetation and Environment Monitoring New Micro Satellite (VENuS) missions, respectively, and enriched with Automatic Identification System (AIS) records. Thirdly, we characterize the tasks' optimal single and multiple spectral band combinations through statistical and feature-based analyses validated on both datasets. In sum, we demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method through a proof-of-concept on CubeSat-like hardware, confirming the models' potential for operational satellite-based maritime monitoring., Comment: 38 pages

Primality testing is an especially useful topic for public-key cryptography. In this paper, a novel primality test algorithm based on the Pell's cubic will be introduced, and its necessary primality conditions will be proved using three integer sequences connected to operations applied in the projectivization of the Pell's cubic. Among many-body instabilities in correlated quantum systems, electronic nematicity, defined by the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry, has emerged as a critical phenomenon, particularly within high-temperature superconductors. Recently, this behavior has been identified in CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$, a member of the AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) kagome family, recognized for its intricate and unconventional quantum phases. Despite accumulating indirect evidence, the fundamental mechanisms driving nematicity in CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$ remain inadequately understood, sparking ongoing debates. In this study, we employ polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to reveal definitive signatures of an orbital-selective nematic deformation in the electronic structure of CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$. This direct experimental evidence underscores the pivotal role of orbital degrees of freedom in symmetry breaking, providing new insights into the complex electronic environment. By applying the functional renormalization group technique to a fully interacting ab initio model, we demonstrate the emergence of a finite angular momentum ($d$-wave) Pomeranchuk instability in CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$, driven by the concomitant action of electronic correlations within specific orbital channels and chemical potential detuning away from Van Hove singularities. By elucidating the connection between orbital correlations and symmetry-breaking instabilities, this work lays a crucial foundation for future investigations into the broader role of orbital selectivity in quantum materials, with far-reaching implications for the design and manipulation of novel electronic phases.

We study eigenvalue problems for the de Rham complex on varying three dimensional domains. Our analysis includes both the Helmholtz equation and the Maxwell system with mixed boundary conditions and non-constant coefficients. We provide Hadamard-type formulas for the shape derivatives under weak regularity assumptions on the domain and its perturbations. Proofs are based on abstract results adapted to varying Hilbert complexes. As a bypass product of our analysis we give a proof of the celebrated Helmann-Feynman theorem for simple eigenvalues assuming differentiability of the corresponding eigenvectors. In a forthcoming publication we aim for a more general result involving also multiple eigenvalues of suitable families of self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces depending on possibly infinite dimensional parameters.

To ensure robust and reliable results, the methodology addresses challenges such as input-ordering bias and result variability, while the exploration of the solution space enhances the accuracy of identified collaboration patterns. The case study reveals key leaders and stable communities within the hydrogen energy sector, providing valuable insights for policymakers and organisations fostering innovation through sustained collaborations. The proposed methodology effectively identifies influential organisations and tracks the stability of research collaborations. The insights gained are valuable for policymakers and organisations seeking to foster innovation through sustained partnerships. This approach can be extended to other sectors, offering a framework for understanding the impact of EU research funding on collaboration and leadership dynamics.

This article explores the importance of examining the solution space in community detection, highlighting its role in achieving reliable results when dealing with real-world problems. A Bayesian framework is used to estimate the stability of the solution space and classify it into categories Single, Dominant, Multiple, Sparse or Empty. By applying this approach to real-world networks, the study highlights the importance of considering multiple solutions rather than relying on a single partition. This ensures more reliable results and efficient use of computational resources in community detection analysis.

The green potential of electric vehicles (EVs) can be fully realized only if their batteries are charged using energy generated from renewable (i.e. green) sources. For logistic or economic reasons, however, EV drivers may be tempted to avoid charging stations certified as providing green energy, instead opting for conventional ones, where only a fraction of the available energy is green. This behaviour may slow down the achievement of decarbonisation targets of the road transport sector. In this paper, we use GPS data to infer whether an undeclared charging event has occurred. Specifically, we construct a Bayesian hypothesis test for the charging behaviour of the EV. Extensive simulations are carried out for an area of London, using the mobility simulator, SUMO, and exploring various operating conditions. Excellent detection rates for undeclared charging events are reported. Density functional theory (DFT) offers a desirable balance between quantitative accuracy and computational efficiency in practical many-electron calculations. Its central component, the exchange-correlation energy functional, has been approximated with increasing levels of complexity ranging from strictly local approximations to nonlocal and orbital-dependent expressions with many tuned parameters. In this work, we formulate a general way of rewriting complex density functionals using deep neural networks in a way that allows for simplified computation of Kohn-Sham potentials as well as higher functional derivatives through automatic differentiation, enabling access to highly nonlinear response functions and forces. These goals are achieved by using a recently developed class of robust neural network models capable of modeling functionals, as opposed to functions, with explicitly enforced spatial symmetries. Functionals treated in this way are then called global density approximations and can be seamlessly integrated with existing DFT workflows. Tests are performed for a dataset featuring a large variety of molecular structures and popular meta-GGA density functionals, where we successfully eliminate orbital dependencies coming from the kinetic energy density, and discover a high degree of transferability to a variety of physical systems. We argue that kagome metals can feature an excitonic condensate of unconventional nature. Studying the recently discovered variant ScV$_6$Sn$_6$, we identify electron and hole pockets due to a pair of van Hove singularities (vHS) close to the Fermi level, with an approximate spectral particle-hole symmetry at low energies. A significant fraction of the Fermi level density of states away from the vHS is removed by the onset of high temperature charge density wave order, and makes the bands more two dimensional, setting the stage for the formation of excitons. We develop a two-orbital minimal model which captures these features, along with the sublattice support of the wavefunctions, and find $s$-wave or $d$-wave excitons depending on the microscopic interaction parameters -- the latter of which exhibits either a charge nematic or time-reversal symmetry breaking flux order depending on strain, offering an explanation of recent STM and transport experiments. Developing novel protocols for hydrogen (H) loading is crucial for furthering the investigation of hydrides as potential high-temperature superconductors at lower pressures compared to recent discoveries. Ionic gating-induced protonation (IGP) has emerged as a promising technique for H loading due to its inherent simplicity, but it can be limited in the maximum density of injected H when ionic liquids are used as a gating medium. Here, we demonstrate that large H concentrations can be successfully injected in both palladium (Pd) bulk foils and thin films (up to a stoichiometry PdH$_{0.89}$) by using a choline chloride-glycerol deep eutectic solvent (DES) as gate electrolyte and applying gate voltages in excess of the cathodic stability limit. The attained H concentrations are large enough to induce superconductivity in Pd, albeit with an incomplete resistive transition which suggests a strongly inhomogeneous H incorporation in the Pd matrix. The Workflows Community Summit gathered 111 participants from 18 countries to discuss emerging trends and challenges in scientific workflows, focusing on six key areas: time-sensitive workflows, AI-HPC convergence, multi-facility workflows, heterogeneous HPC environments, user experience, and FAIR computational workflows. The integration of AI and exascale computing has revolutionized scientific workflows, enabling higher-fidelity models and complex, time-sensitive processes, while introducing challenges in managing heterogeneous environments and multi-facility data dependencies. The rise of large language models is driving computational demands to zettaflop scales, necessitating modular, adaptable systems and cloud-service models to optimize resource utilization and ensure reproducibility. Multi-facility workflows present challenges in data movement, curation, and overcoming institutional silos, while diverse hardware architectures require integrating workflow considerations into early system design and developing standardized resource management tools. The summit emphasized improving user experience in workflow systems and ensuring FAIR workflows to enhance collaboration and accelerate scientific discovery. Key recommendations include developing standardized metrics for time-sensitive workflows, creating frameworks for cloud-HPC integration, implementing distributed-by-design workflow modeling, establishing multi-facility authentication protocols, and accelerating AI integration in HPC workflow management. The summit also called for comprehensive workflow benchmarks, workflow-specific UX principles, and a FAIR workflow maturity model, highlighting the need for continued collaboration in addressing the complex challenges posed by the convergence of AI, HPC, and multi-facility research environments.

It is generally assumed that existing artificial systems are not phenomenally conscious, and that the construction of phenomenally conscious artificial systems would require significant technological progress if it is possible at all. We challenge this assumption by arguing that if Global Workspace Theory (GWT) - a leading scientific theory of phenomenal consciousness - is correct, then instances of one widely implemented AI architecture, the artificial language agent, might easily be made phenomenally conscious if they are not already. Along the way, we articulate an explicit methodology for thinking about how to apply scientific theories of consciousness to artificial systems and employ this methodology to arrive at a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for phenomenal consciousness according to GWT.

To address an ever-increasing demand for ubiquitous high-speed connectivity, mobile networks have intensified their deployment process. However, achieving this target has proven to be a challenge and has led to a surge in overall energy consumption. In recent years, non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) have been endorsed as a potential solution to these problems by complementing the coverage of the terrestrial network in areas with limited network deployment. To this end, this paper proposes an integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial network (TN-NTN) that utilises the overall available communication resources to expand coverage and meet Quality of Service (QoS) requirements during high-traffic hours in any deployment scenario. Importantly, our framework allows to drastically reduce the terrestrial network energy consumption during low-traffic hours. Specifically, we introduce a novel radio resource management algorithm, BLASTER (Bandwidth SpLit, User ASsociation, and PowEr ContRol), which integrates bandwidth allocation, user equipment (UE) association, power control, and base station activation within the TN-NTN. This algorithm aims to optimize network resource allocation fairness and energy consumption dynamically, demonstrating new opportunities in deploying satellite networks in legacy cellular systems. In the context of the CERN EP R&D on monolithic sensors and the ALICE ITS3 upgrade, the Tower Partners Semiconductor Co (TPSCo) 65 nm process has been qualified for use in high energy physics, and adopted for the ALICE ITS3 upgrade. An Analog Pixel Test Structure (APTS) featuring fast per pixel operational-amplifier-based buffering for a small matrix of four by four pixels, with a sensor with a small collection electrode and a very non-uniform electric field, was designed to allow detailed characterization of the pixel performance in this technology. Several variants of this chip with different pixel designs have been characterized with a (120 GeV/$c$) positive hadron beam. This result indicates that the APTS-OA prototype variants with the best performance achieve a time resolution of 63 ps with a detection efficiency exceeding 99% and a spatial resolution of 2 $\mu$m, highlighting the potential of TPSCo 65nm CMOS imaging technology for high-energy physics and other fields requiring precise time measurement, high detection efficiency, and excellent spatial resolution.

We give here a semi-analytic formula for the density of critical values for chi random fields on a general manifold. The result uses Kac-Rice argument and a convenient representation for the Hessian matrix of chi fields, which makes the computation of their expected determinant much more feasible. In the high-threshold limit, the expression for the expected value of critical points becomes very transparent: up to explicit constants, it amounts to Hermite polynomials times a Gaussian density. Asymmetric partition of fate determinants during cell division is a hallmark of cell differentiation. Recent works suggested that such a mechanism is hijacked by cancer cells to increase both their phenotypic heterogeneity and plasticity and in turn their fitness. To quantify fluctuations in the partitioning of cellular elements, imaging-based approaches are used, whose accuracy is limited by the difficulty of detecting cell divisions. Our work addresses this gap proposing a general method based on high-throughput flow cytometry measurements coupled with a theoretical frameworks. We applied our method to a panel of both normal and cancerous human colon cells, showing that different kinds of colon adenocarcinoma cells display very distinct extents of fluctuations in their cytoplasm partition, explained by an asymmetric division of their size. To test the accuracy of our population-level protocol, we directly measure the inherited fractions of cellular elements from extensive time-lapses of live-cell laser scanning microscopy, finding excellent agreement across the cell types. This paper introduces the hypothetical track-length fitting algorithm, a novel method for measuring the kinetic energies of ionizing particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Nonlinear metasurfaces offer a new paradigm to realize optical nonlinear devices with new and unparalleled behavior compared to nonlinear crystals, due to the interplay between photonic resonances and materials properties. The complicated interdependency between efficiency and emission directionality of the nonlinear optical signal on the existence, localization, and lifetimes of photonic resonances, as well as on the nonlinear susceptibility, makes it extremely difficult to design optimal metasurfaces using conventional materials and geometries. Inverse design using topology optimization is a powerful design tool for photonic structures, but traditional approaches developed for linear photonics are not suitable for such high dimensional nonlinear problems. Here, we use a topology optimization approach to inverse-design a fabrication-robust nonlinear metasurface that includes quantum-engineered resonant nonlinearities in semiconductor heterostructures for efficient and directional second harmonic generation. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that under practical constraints, among all the parameters, the nonlinear modal overlap emerges as the dominant parameter that enhances conversion efficiency, a finding that contrasts with intuition-driven studies that often emphasize Purcell enhancement. Our results open new opportunities for optimizing nonlinear processes in nanophotonic structures for novel light sources, quantum information applications, and communication.

We present 3D general-relativistic neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics simulations of asymmetric binary neutron star mergers producing long-lived neutron stars remnants and spanning a fraction of their cooling time scale. Two binaries with mass ratios of $1.77$ and $1.49$ described by a stiff and a soft microphysical equation of state are considered. The mergers are characterized by significant tidal disruption with neutron rich material forming a massive disc around the remnant. The latter develops a one-armed dynamics that is imprinted in the emitted kilo-Hertz gravitational waves. Angular momentum transport to the disc is initially driven by spiral-density waves and enhanced by turbulent viscosity and neutrino heating on longer timescales. The mass outflows are composed by neutron-rich dynamical ejecta of mass ${\sim}10^{-3}-10^{-2}M_\odot$ followed by a persistent spiral-wave/neutrino-driven wind of ${\gtrsim}10^{-2}M_\odot$ with material spanning a wide range of electron fractions, ${\sim}0.1-0.55$. For the stiff EOS and largest mass ratio binary, tidal dynamical ejecta have fast tails up to velocities ${\sim}0.8$~c. The outflows are further evolved to days timescale using 2D ray-by-ray radiation-hydrodynamics simulations that include an online nuclear network. We find complete $r$-process yields and identify the production of $^{56}$Ni and the subsequent decay chain to $^{56}$Co and $^{56}$Fe. Synthetic kilonova light curves predict an extended (near-) infrared peak a few days postmerger originating from $r$-processes in the neutron-rich/high-opacity ejecta and a UV/optical peak a few hours postmerger originating from weak $r$-processes in the faster ejecta components. Additionally, the fast tail of tidal origin generates kilonova afterglows potentially detectable in radio and X band on a few to ten years timescale. Ensuring user privacy remains critical in mobile networks, particularly with the rise of connected devices and denser 5G infrastructure. Privacy concerns have persisted across 2G, 3G, and 4G/LTE networks. Recognizing these concerns, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has made privacy enhancements in 5G Release 15. However, the extent of operator adoption remains unclear, especially as most networks operate in 5G Non Stand Alone (NSA) mode, relying on 4G Core Networks. This study provides the first qualitative and experimental comparison between 5G NSA and Stand Alone (SA) in real operator networks, focusing on privacy enhancements addressing top eight pre-5G attacks based on recent academic literature. Additionally, it evaluates the privacy levels of OpenAirInterface (OAI), a leading open-source software for 5G, against real network deployments for the same attacks. A one-third monolayer of the heavy metals Sn and Pb deposited on semiconductor substrates can lead to a $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ surface reconstruction, constituting an exciting triangular lattice material platform. A long history of experiments identified charge-ordered and magnetic ground states. These discoveries were accompanied by a decades-long debate of whether electron correlations or other effects involving phonons are the driving force of the symmetry-broken states. The most recent discovery of superconductivity in boron-doped Sn/Si(111) with a $T_c$ between 5K and 9K led to a renewed excitement. Here we revisit the electronic and phononic properties of Sn and Pb adatom triangular lattices on Si(111) and SiC(0001). For all materials we compute relativistic bandstructures using DFT+$U$ where $U$ is only applied to the substrate atoms in order to adjust the band gap to match the experimental value; as a consequence, some of the resulting tight-binding parameters of the metallic surface band differ substantially compared to previous studies. Remarkably, for Pb/SiC(0001) we predict Rashba spin-orbit coupling as large as 45% of the nearest-neighbor hopping energy. In addition, we compute the phonon spectra and electron-phonon coupling constants for all materials, and for Pb/Si(111) even relativistically although the inclusion of spin-orbit coupling has surprisingly little effect on the electron-phonon coupling constant. We conclude that the resulting couplings are too weak to account for electron-phonon mediated superconductivity in any of these materials., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables

We report the existence of capillary waves propagating along the boundary between miscible co-flowing fluids. We unveil that the interplay between transient interfacial stresses and confinement drives the progressive transition from the well-known inertial regime, characterized by a wavenumber independent of frequency, $k\sim\omega^{0}$, to an unexpected capillary-wave scaling, $k\sim\omega^{2/3}$. This allows us to measure the effective interfacial tension between miscible fluids and its rapid decay on time scales never probed so far, which we rationalize with a model going beyond square gradient theories., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

Digital signal processing is the cornerstone of several modern-day technologies, yet in multiple applications it faces critical bottlenecks related to memory and speed constraints. Thanks to recent advances in metasurface design and fabrication, light-based analog computing has emerged as a viable option to partially replace or augment digital approaches. Several light-based analog computing functionalities have been demonstrated using patterned flat optical elements, with great opportunities for integration in compact nanophotonic systems. So far, however, the available operations have been restricted to the linear regime, limiting the impact of this technology to a compactification of Fourier optics systems. In this paper, we introduce nonlinear operations to the field of metasurface-based analog optical processing, demonstrating that nonlinear optical phenomena, combined with nonlocality in flat optics, can be leveraged to synthesize kernels beyond linear Fourier optics, paving the way to a broad range of new opportunities. As a practical demonstration, we report the experimental synthesis of a class of nonlinear operations that can be used to realize broadband, polarization-selective analog-domain edge detection.

Despite the remarkable success of Large Language Models (LLMs), they still exhibit a limited capability to align their outputs to the user instructions. In this work, we introduce a simple and effective method, which we name GUIDE, that mechanistically increases attention scores in instruction tokens. To support this operation, we present Influence, a novel metric that highlights how the user's instructions propagate through the transformer layers and impact the LLM output. Our results show that GUIDE improves the accuracy of following instructions 29.4 % to 60.4%, outperforming natural prompting alternatives and Supervised Fine-Tuning up to 1M tokens.

The study of interactions between biomimetic membranes and micron-sized particles serves as a fundamental cornerstone for understanding various biological processes. Here, we aim at controlling the engulfment of microparticles in absence of any externally applied force. We investigate systems involving particles and lipid vesicles, where interactions are primarily mediated by electrostatics. Our attention is directed towards dissipative phenomena at the micron and nano scales occurring between a vesicle membrane and a particle, highlighting the influence of the particle penetration depth and the impact of substructures on particle friction. Our work is complemented by hydrodynamic simulations considering the impacts of the shape of the membrane wrapping the particle and the water gap separating the lipid bilayer membrane and the particle on the translational particle drag. Lastly, we explore a system of aqueous microdroplets in oil, stabilized by a single lipid layer and compare the friction experienced by a particle in contact with this monolayer to the friction observed for particles wrapped by lipid bilayers. Surprisingly, the particle drag is higher on the lipid monolayer than the bilayer, which can be explained by introducing a drag contribution due to the partial wetting dynamics of the particle at the monolayer interface.

With the extreme scaling, active devices in both CMOS and BiCMOS technologies have reached outstanding ft/fmax, enabling an ever-increasing number of existing and emerging applications in the microwave and millimeter wave (mm-wave) frequency range. The increase in transistors ft/fmax has been so much significant that the performance of microwave and mm-wave ICs are limited mainly by losses in passive devices. In this paper, we address a discussion on qualitative and quantitative aspects that may help to further unveil the impact of such losses on the overall circuit performance and stimulate the adoption of effective loss-aware design methodologies. As example, we report the results related to the design of low power mm-wave low noise amplifiers (LNAs). Our results show how, in low power regime, the performances of mm-wave LNAs are dominated by losses in passive components. This paper investigates the implementation of microwave and mm-wave integrated circuits for control and readout of electron/hole spin qubits, as elementary building blocks for future emerging quantum computing technologies. In particular, it summarizes the most relevant readout and control techniques of electron/hole spin qubits, addresses the feasibility and reports some preliminary simulation results of two blocks: transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and pulse generator (PG). The TIA exhibits a transimpedance gain of 108.5 dB Ohm over a -3dB bandwidth of 18 GHz, with input-referred noise current spectral density of 0.89 pA/root(Hz) at 10 GHz. Next-generation (5G/6G) wireless systems demand low-power mm-wave phased-array ICs. Variable-gain LNAs (VGLNAs) are key building blocks enabling hardware complexity reduction, performance enhancement and functionality extension. This paper reports a performance benchmarking of two low-power 30GHz VG-LNAs for phased-array ICs, which provide a 7.5dB gain control for 18dB Taylor taper in a 30GHz 8x8 antenna array, for a comprehensive validation of the new class of VGLNAs and its design methodology. In particular, this paper reports a second and implementation (VG-LNA2) with a reduced number (four) of gain-control back-gate voltages and super-low-Vt MOSFETs, with respect to the previous first implementation (VG-LNA1) with six gain-control back-gate voltages and regular- Vt MOSFETs, both in the same 22nm FDSOI CMOS technology. The results show that VG-LNA2 exhibits performance comparable to those of VG-LNA1, with a slightly lower power consumption. Ensuring user privacy remains a critical concern within mobile cellular networks, particularly given the proliferation of interconnected devices and services. In fact, a lot of user privacy issues have been raised in 2G, 3G, 4G/LTE networks. Recognizing this general concern, 3GPP has prioritized addressing these issues in the development of 5G, implementing numerous modifications to enhance user privacy since 5G Release 15. In this systematization of knowledge paper, we first provide a framework for studying privacy and security related attacks in cellular networks, setting as privacy objective the User Identity Confidentiality defined in 3GPP standards. Using this framework, we discuss existing privacy and security attacks in pre-5G networks, analyzing the weaknesses that lead to these attacks. Furthermore, we thoroughly study the security characteristics of 5G up to the new Release 19, and examine mitigation mechanisms of 5G to the identified pre-5G attacks. Afterwards, we analyze how recent 5G attacks try to overcome these mitigation mechanisms. This research investigates the impact of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, specifically Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) flood attacks, on Autonomous Driving (AD) systems, focusing on their control modules. Two experimental setups were created: the first involved an ICMP flood attack on a Raspberry Pi running an AD software stack, and the second examined the effects of single and double ICMP flood attacks on a Global Navigation Satellite System Real-Time Kinematic (GNSS-RTK) device for high-accuracy localization of an autonomous vehicle that is available on the market. The results indicate a moderate impact of DoS attacks on the AD stack, where the increase in median computation time was marginal, suggesting a degree of resilience to these types of attacks. In contrast, the GNSS device demonstrated significant vulnerability: during DoS attacks, the sample rate dropped drastically to approximately 50% and 5% of the nominal rate for single and double attacker configurations, respectively. Additionally, the longest observed time increments were in the range of seconds during the attacks. These results underscore the vulnerability of AD systems to DoS attacks and the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures. This work provides valuable insights into the design requirements of AD software stacks and highlights that external hardware and modules can be significant attack surfaces.

This paper aims to analyze three publicly available datasets for quantifying seasonal and annual uncertainty for efficient scenario creation. The datasets from Elaad, Elia and Fluvius are utilized to statistically analyze electric vehicle charging, normalized solar generation and low-voltage consumer load profiles, respectively. Frameworks for scenario generation are also provided for these datasets. The datasets for load profiles and solar generation analyzed are for the year 2022, thus embedding seasonal information. An online repository is created for the wider applicability of this work. Finally, the extreme load week(s) are identified and linked to the weather data measured at EnergyVille in Belgium.

Task planning for robots in real-life settings presents significant challenges. These challenges stem from three primary issues: the difficulty in identifying grounded sequences of steps to achieve a goal; the lack of a standardized mapping between high-level actions and low-level commands; and the challenge of maintaining low computational overhead given the limited resources of robotic hardware. We introduce EMPOWER, a framework designed for open-vocabulary online grounding and planning for embodied agents aimed at addressing these issues. By leveraging efficient pre-trained foundation models and a multi-role mechanism, EMPOWER demonstrates notable improvements in grounded planning and execution. Quantitative results highlight the effectiveness of our approach, achieving an average success rate of 0.73 across six different real-life scenarios using a TIAGo robot., Comment: Accepted at IROS 2024
