We study reflection-symmetric realisations of symmetric graphs in the plane that allow a continuous symmetry and edge-length preserving deformation. To do so, we identify a necessary combinatorial condition on graphs with reflection-symmetric flexible realisations. This condition is based on a specific type of edge colouring, where edges are assigned one of three colours in a symmetric way. From some of these colourings we also construct concrete reflection-symmetric realisations with their corresponding symmetry preserving motion. We study also a specific class of reflection-symmetric realisations consisting of triangles and parallelograms.

This article considers the problem of 3-dimensional genome reconstruction for single-cell data, and the uniqueness of such reconstructions in the setting of haploid organisms. We consider multiple graph models as representations of this problem, and use techniques from graph rigidity theory to determine identifiability. Biologically, our models come from Hi-C data, microscopy data, and combinations thereof. Mathematically, we use unit ball and sphere packing models, as well as models consisting of distance and inequality constraints. In each setting, we describe and/or derive new results on realisability and uniqueness. We then propose a 3D reconstruction method based on semidefinite programming and apply it to synthetic and real data sets using our models.

The concept of graph flattenability, initially formalized by Belk and Connelly and later expanded by Sitharam and Willoughby, extends the question of embedding finite metric spaces into a given normed space. A finite simple graph $G=(V,E)$ is said to be $(X,Y)$-flattenable if any set of induced edge lengths from an embedding of $G$ into a normed space $Y$ can also be realised by an embedding of $G$ into a normed space $X$. This property, being minor-closed, can be characterized by a finite list of forbidden minors. Following the establishment of fundamental results about $(X,Y)$-flattenability, we identify sufficient conditions under which it implies independence with respect to the associated rigidity matroids for $X$ and $Y$. We show that the spaces $\ell_2$ and $\ell_\infty$ serve as two natural extreme spaces of flattenability and discuss $(X, \ell_p )$-flattenability for varying $p$. We provide a complete characterization of $(X,Y)$-flattenable graphs for the specific case when $X$ is 2-dimensional and $Y$ is infinite-dimensional., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures

Consider a collection of points and the sets of slopes or directions of the lines between pairs of points. It is known that the algebraic matroid on this set of elements is the well studied 2-dimensional rigidity matroid. This article analyzes a construction on top of the set of slopes given by an angle constraint system of incidences and angles. Extremality and irreducibility constitute fundamental concepts in mathematics, particularly within tropical geometry. While extremal decomposition is typically computationally hard, this article presents a fast algorithm for identifying the extremal decomposition of tropical varieties with rational balanced weightings. Additionally, we explore connections and applications related to rigidity theory. We explore the rigidity of generic frameworks in 3-dimensions whose underlying graph is close to being planar. Specifically we consider apex graphs, edge-apex graphs and their variants and prove independence results in the generic 3-dimensional rigidity matroid adding to the short list of graph classes for which 3-dimensional rigidity is understood. We then analyse global rigidity for these graph classes and use our results to deduce bounds on the maximum likelihood threshold of graphs in these nearly planar classes., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

We consider the rigidity and global rigidity of bar-joint frameworks in Euclidean $d$-space under additional dilation constraints in specified coordinate directions. In this setting we obtain a complete characterisation of generic rigidity. We then consider generic global rigidity. In particular, we provide an algebraic sufficient condition and a weak necessary condition. Evidence for a stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background, plausibly originating from the merger of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), is accumulating with observations from pulsar timing arrays. An outstanding question is how inspiraling SMBHs get past the "final parsec" of separation, where they have a tendency to stall before GW emission alone can make the binary coalesce. We argue that dynamical friction from the dark matter (DM) spike surrounding the black holes is sufficient to resolve this puzzle, if the DM has a self-interaction cross section of order $\,$cm$^2$/g. The same effect leads to a softening of the GW spectrum at low frequencies as suggested by the current data. For collisionless cold DM, the friction deposits so much energy that the spike is disrupted and cannot bridge the final parsec, while for self-interacting DM, the isothermal core of the halo can act as a reservoir for the energy liberated from the SMBH orbits. A realistic velocity dependence, such as generated by the exchange of a massive mediator like a dark photon, is favored to give a good fit to the GW spectrum while providing a large enough core. A graph is $d$-rigid if for any generic realisation of the graph in $\mathbb{R}^d$ (equivalently, the $d$-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$), there are only finitely many non-congruent realisations in the same space with the same edge lengths. By extending this definition to complex realisations in a natural way, we define $c_d(G)$ to be the number of equivalent $d$-dimensional complex realisations of a $d$-rigid graph $G$ for a given generic realisation, and $c^*_d(G)$ to be the number of equivalent $d$-dimensional complex spherical realisations of $G$ for a given generic spherical realisation. Somewhat surprisingly, these two realisation numbers are not always equal. Recently developed algorithms for computing realisation numbers determined that the inequality $c_2(G) \leq c_2^*(G)$ holds for any minimally 2-rigid graph $G$ with 12 vertices or less. In this paper we confirm that, for any dimension $d$, the inequality $c_d(G) \leq c_d^*(G)$ holds for every $d$-rigid graph $G$. In this note we study the uniqueness problem for collections of pennies and marbles. More generally, consider a collection of unit $d$-spheres that may touch but not overlap. Given the existence of such a collection, one may analyse the contact graph of the collection. In particular we consider the uniqueness of the collection arising from the contact graph. Using the language of graph rigidity theory, we prove a precise characterisation of uniqueness (global rigidity) in dimensions 2 and 3 when the contact graph is additionally chordal. We then illustrate a wide range of examples in these cases. That is, we illustrate collections of marbles and pennies that can be perturbed continuously (flexible), are locally unique (rigid) and are unique (globally rigid). We characterise rigid graphs for cylindrical normed spaces $Z=X\oplus_\infty \mathbb{R}$ where $X$ is a finite dimensional real normed linear space and $Z$ is endowed with the product norm. In particular, we obtain purely combinatorial characterisations of minimal rigidity for a large class of 3-dimensional cylindrical normed spaces; for example, when $X$ is an $\ell_p$-plane with $p\in (1,\infty)$. We combine these results with recent work of Cros et al. to characterise rigid graphs in the 4-dimensional cylindrical space $(\mathbb{R}^2\oplus_1\mathbb{R})\oplus_\infty\mathbb{R}$. These are among the first combinatorial characterisations of rigid graphs in normed spaces of dimension greater than 2. Ozkan et al. conjectured that any packing of $n$ spheres with generic radii will be stress-free, and hence will have at most $3n-6$ contacts. In this paper we prove that this conjecture is true for any sphere packing with contact graph of the form $G \oplus K_2$, i.e., the graph formed by connecting every vertex in a graph $G$ to every vertex in the complete graph with two vertices. We also prove the converse of the conjecture holds in this special case: specifically, a graph $G \oplus K_2$ is the contact graph of a generic radii sphere packing if and only if $G$ is a penny graph with no cycles., Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures. The maximum likelihood threshold (MLT) of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of samples to almost surely guarantee existence of the maximum likelihood estimate in the corresponding Gaussian graphical model. Recently a new characterization of the MLT in terms of rigidity-theoretic properties of $G$ was proved \cite{Betal}. This characterization was then used to give new combinatorial lower bounds on the MLT of any graph. We continue this line of research by exploiting combinatorial rigidity results to compute the MLT precisely for several families of graphs. A homothetic packing of squares is any set of various-size squares with the same orientation where no two squares have overlapping interiors. If all $n$ squares have the same size then we can have up to roughly $4n$ contacts by arranging the squares in a grid formation. The maximum possible number of contacts for a set of $n$ squares will drop drastically, however, if the size of each square is chosen more-or-less randomly. In the following paper we describe a necessary and sufficient condition for determining if a set of $n$ squares with fixed sizes can be arranged into a homothetic square packing with more than $2n-2$ contacts. Using this, we then prove that any (possibly not homothetic) packing of $n$ squares will have at most $2n-2$ face-to-face contacts if the various widths of the squares do not satisfy a finite set of linear equations., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

We show that the variational energy principle of multi-region relaxed magnetohydrodynamic (MRxMHD) model can be used to predict finite-pressure linear tearing instabilities. In this model, the plasma volume is sliced into sub-volumes separated by "ideal interfaces", and in each volume the magnetic field relaxes to a Taylor state where the pressure gradient $\nabla p = 0$. The MRxMHD model is implemented in the SPEC code so that the equilibrium solution in each region is computed while the preserving force balance across the interfaces. As SPEC computes the Hessian matrix (a discretized stability matrix), the stability of an MRxMHD equilibrium can also be computed with SPEC. In this article, using SPEC, we investigate the effect of local pressure gradients and the $\nabla p = 0$ in the vicinity of the resonant surface of a tearing mode. For low beta plasma, we have been able to illustrate a relationship between the resistive singular layer theory [Coppi et al. (1966) Nucl. Fusion 6 101, Glasser et al. The Physics of Fluids 18, 875-888 (1975)], and the MRxMHD model. Within the singular layer, the volume-averaged magnetic helicity and the flux-averaged toroidal flux are shown to be the invariants for the linear tearing modes in SPEC simulations. Our technique to compute MRxMHD stability is first tested numerically in cylindrical tokamak and its application in toroidal geometry is demonstrated. We demonstrate an agreement between the stability boundary obtained with SPEC simulation and the resistive inner layer theories., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^d$ is globally rigid if it is the unique realisation, up to rigid congruences, of $G$ in $\mathbb{E}^d$ with the edge lengths of $(G,p)$. Building on key results of Hendrickson and Connelly, Jackson and Jord\'{a}n gave a complete combinatorial characterisation of when a generic framework is global rigidity in $\mathbb{E}^2$. We prove an analogous result when the Euclidean norm is replaced by any norm that is analytic on $\mathbb{R}^2 \setminus \{0\}$. More precisely, we show that a graph $G=(V,E)$ is globally rigid in a non-Euclidean analytic normed plane if and only if $G$ is 2-connected and $G-e$ contains 2 edge-disjoint spanning trees for all $e\in E$. The main technical tool is a recursive construction of 2-connected and redundantly rigid graphs in analytic normed planes. We also obtain some sufficient conditions for global rigidity as corollaries of our main result and prove that the analogous necessary conditions hold in $d$-dimensional analytic normed spaces., Comment: 40 pages, 16 figures

A recent result of Cioab\u{a}, Dewar and Gu implies that any $k$-regular Ramanujan graph with $k\geq 8$ is globally rigid in $\mathbb{R}^2$. In this paper, we extend these results and prove that any $k$-regular Ramanujan graph of sufficiently large order is globally rigid in $\mathbb{R}^2$ when $k\in \{6, 7\}$, and when $k\in \{4,5\}$ if it is also vertex-transitive. These results imply that the Ramanujan graphs constructed by Morgenstern in 1994 are globally rigid. We also prove several results on other types of framework rigidity, including body-bar rigidity, body-hinge rigidity, and rigidity on surfaces of revolution. A natural problem in combinatorial rigidity theory concerns the determination of the rigidity or flexibility of bar-joint frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that admit some non-trivial symmetry. When $d=2$ there is a large literature on this topic. In particular, it is typical to quotient the symmetric graph by the group and analyse the rigidity of symmetric, but otherwise generic frameworks, using the combinatorial structure of the appropriate group-labelled quotient graph. However, mirroring the situation for generic rigidity, little is known combinatorially when $d\geq 3$. Nevertheless in the periodic case, a key result of Borcea and Streinu characterises when a quotient graph can be lifted to a rigid periodic framework in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We develop an analogous theory for symmetric frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The results obtained apply to all finite and infinite 2-dimensional point groups, and then in arbitrary dimension they concern a wide range of infinite point groups, sufficiently large finite groups and groups containing translations and rotations. For the case of finite groups we also derive results concerning the probability of assigning group labels to a quotient graph so that the resulting lift is symmetrically rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$., Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures

A graph is said to be globally rigid if almost all embeddings of the graph's vertices in the Euclidean plane will define a system of edge-length equations with a unique (up to isometry) solution. In 2007, Jackson, Servatius and Servatius characterised exactly which vertex-transitive graphs are globally rigid solely by their degree and maximal clique number, two easily computable parameters for vertex-transitive graphs. In this short note we will extend this characterisation to all graphs that are determined by their automorphism group. A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ is the combination of a graph $G$ and a map $p$ assigning positions, in some space, to the vertices of $G$. The framework is rigid if every edge-length-preserving continuous motion of the vertices arises from an isometry of the space. We will analyse rigidity when the space is a (non-Euclidean) normed plane and two designated vertices are mapped to the same position. This non-genericity assumption leads us to a count matroid first introduced by Jackson, Kaszanitsky and the third author. We show that independence in this matroid is equivalent to independence as a suitably regular bar-joint framework in a normed plane with two coincident points; this characterises when a regular normed plane coincident-point framework is rigid and allows us to deduce a delete-contract characterisation. We then apply this result to show that an important construction operation (generalised vertex splitting) preserves the stronger property of global rigidity in normed planes and use this to construct rich families of globally rigid graphs when the normed plane is analytic., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

A planar framework -- a graph together with a map of its vertices to the plane -- is flexible if it allows a continuous deformation preserving the distances between adjacent vertices. Extending a recent previous result, we prove that a connected graph with a countable vertex set can be realized as a flexible framework if and only if it has a so-called NAC-coloring. The tools developed to prove this result are then applied to frameworks where every 4-cycle is a parallelogram, and countably infinite graphs with $n$-fold rotational symmetry. With this, we determine a simple combinatorial characterization that determines whether the 1-skeleton of a Penrose rhombus tiling with a given set of braced rhombi will have a flexible motion, and also whether the motion will preserve 5-fold rotational symmetry., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures

Epilepsy affects 50 million people worldwide and is one of the most common serious neurological disorders. Seizure detection and classification is a valuable tool for diagnosing and maintaining the condition. An automated classification algorithm will allow for accurate diagnosis. Utilising the Temple University Hospital (TUH) Seizure Corpus, six seizure types are compared; absence, complex partial, myoclonic, simple partial, tonic and tonic- clonic models. This study proposes a method that utilises unique features with a novel parallel classifier - Parallel Genetic Naive Bayes (NB) Seizure Classifier (PGNBSC). The PGNBSC algorithm searches through the features and by reclassifying the data each time, the algorithm will create a matrix for optimum search criteria. Ictal states from the EEGs are segmented into 1.8 s windows, where the epochs are then further decomposed into 13 different features from the first intrinsic mode function (IMF). The features are compared using an original NB classifier in the first model. This is improved upon in a second model by using a genetic algorithm (Binary Grey Wolf Optimisation, Option 1) with a NB classifier. The third model uses a combination of the simple partial and complex partial seizures to provide the highest classification accuracy for each of the six seizures amongst the three models (20%, 53%, and 85% for first, second, and third model, respectively)., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication at the 21st IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON 2022)

A (bar-and-joint) framework is a set of points in a normed space with a set of fixed distance constraints between them. Determining whether a framework is locally rigid - i.e. whether every other suitably close framework with the same distance constraints is an isometric copy - is NP-hard when the normed space has dimension 2 or greater. We can reduce the complexity by instead considering derivatives of the constraints, which linearises the problem. By applying methods from non-smooth analysis, we shall strengthen previous sufficient conditions for framework rigidity that utilise first-order derivatives. We shall also introduce the notions of prestress stability and second-order rigidity to the topic of normed space rigidity, two weaker sufficient conditions for framework rigidity previously only considered for Euclidean spaces., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Epilepsy is a disorder of the nervous system that can affect people of any age group. With roughly 50 million people worldwide diagnosed with the disorder, it is one of the most common neurological disorders. The EEG is an indispensable tool for diagnosis of epileptic seizures in an ideal case, as brain waves from an epileptic person will present distinct abnormalities. However, in real world situations there will often be biological and electrical noise interference, as well as the issue of a multichannel signal, which introduce a great challenge for seizure detection. For this study, the Temple University Hospital (TUH) EEG Seizure Corpus dataset was used. This paper proposes a novel channel selection method which isolates different frequency ranges within five channels. This is based upon the frequencies at which normal brain waveforms exhibit. A one second window was selected, with a 0.5 second overlap. Wavelet signal denoising was performed using Daubechies 4 wavelet decomposition, thresholding was applied using minimax soft thresholding criteria. Filter banking was used to localise frequency ranges from five specific channels. Statistical features were then derived from the outputs. A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ in a (non-Euclidean) real normed plane $X$ is the combination of a finite, simple graph $G$ and a placement $p$ of the vertices in $X$. A framework $(G,p)$ is globally rigid in $X$ if every other framework $(G,q)$ in $X$ with the same edge lengths as $(G,p)$ arises from an isometry of $X$. The weaker property of local rigidity in normed planes (where only $(G,q)$ within a neighbourhood of $(G,p)$ are considered) has been studied by several researchers over the last 5 years after being introduced by Kitson and Power for $\ell_p$-norms. However global rigidity is an unexplored area for general normed spaces, despite being intensely studied in the Euclidean context by many groups over the last 40 years. In order to understand global rigidity in $X$, we introduce new generalised rigid body motions in normed planes where the norm is determined by an analytic function. The maximum likelihood threshold (MLT) of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of samples to almost surely guarantee existence of the maximum likelihood estimate in the corresponding Gaussian graphical model. We give a new characterization of the MLT in terms of rigidity-theoretic properties of $G$ and use this characterization to give new combinatorial lower bounds on the MLT of any graph. We use the new lower bounds to give high-probability guarantees on the maximum likelihood thresholds of sparse Erd{\"o}s-R\'enyi random graphs in terms of their average density. These examples show that the new lower bounds are within a polylog factor of tight, where, on the same graph families, all known lower bounds are trivial. Based on computational experiments made possible by our methods, we conjecture that the MLT of an Erd{\"o}s-R\'enyi random graph is equal to its generic completion rank with high probability. Using structural results on rigid graphs in low dimension, we can prove the conjecture for graphs with MLT at most $4$ and describe the threshold probability for the MLT to switch from $3$ to $4$. We also give a geometric characterization of the MLT of a graph in terms of a new "lifting" problem for frameworks that is interesting in its own right. The Stepped Pressure Equilibrium Code (SPEC) [Hudson et al., Phys. Plasmas 19, 112502 (2012)] has been successful in the construction of equilibria in 3D configurations that contain a mixture of flux surfaces, islands and chaotic magnetic field lines. In this model, the plasma is sliced into sub-volumes separated by ideal interfaces, and in each volume the magnetic field is a Beltrami field. In the cases where the system is far from possessing a continuous symmetry, such as in stellarators, the existence of solutions to a stepped-pressure equilibrium with given constraints, such as a multi-region relaxed MHD minimum energy state, is not guaranteed but is often taken for granted. Using SPEC, we have studied two different scenarios in which a solution fails to exist in a slab with analytic boundary perturbations. We found that with a large boundary perturbation, a certain interface becomes fractal, corresponding to the break up of a Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) surface. Moreover, an interface can only support a maximum pressure jump while a solution of the magnetic field consistent with the force balance condition can be found. An interface closer to break-up can support a smaller pressure jump. We discovered that the pressure jump can push the interface closer to being non-smooth through force balance, thus significantly decreasing the maximum pressure it can support. Our work shows that a convergence study must be performed on a SPEC equilibrium with interfaces close to break-up. These results may also provide insights into the choice of interfaces and have applications in finding out the maximum pressure a machine can support.

We explore the existence of quasisymmetric magnetic fields in asymmetric toroidal domains. These vector fields can be identified with a class of magnetohydrodynamic equilibria in the presence of pressure anisotropy. First, using Clebsch potentials, we derive a system of two coupled nonlinear first order partial differential equations expressing a family of quasisymmetric magnetic fields in bounded domains. In regions where flux surfaces and surfaces of constant field strength are not tangential, this system can be further reduced to a single degenerate nonlinear second order partial differential equation with externally assigned initial data. Then, we exhibit regular quasisymmetric vector fields which correspond to local solutions of anisotropic magnetohydrodynamics in asymmetric toroidal domains such that tangential boundary conditions are fulfilled on a portion of the bounding surface. The problems of boundary shape and locality are also discussed. We find that symmetric magnetic fields can be fitted into asymmetric domains, and that the mathematical difficulty encountered in the derivation of global quasisymmetric magnetic fields lies in the topological obstruction toward global extension affecting local solutions of the governing nonlinear first order partial differential equations., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

The gap between a recently developed dynamical version of relaxed magnetohydrodynamics (RxMHD) and ideal MHD (IMHD) is bridged by approximating the zero-resistivity "Ideal" Ohm's Law (IOL) constraint using an augmented Lagrangian method borrowed from optimization theory. The augmentation combines a pointwise vector Lagrange multiplier method and global penalty function method and can be used either for iterative enforcement of the IOL to arbitrary accuracy, or for constructing a continuous sequence of magnetofluid dynamics models running between RxMHD (no IOL) and weak IMHD (IOL almost everywhere). The guiding centre dynamics of fast particles can alter the behaviour of energetic particle driven modes with chirping frequencies. In this paper, the applicability of an earlier trapped/passing locus model [H. Hezaveh et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 126010] has been extended to regimes where the wave trapping region can expand and trap ambient particles. This extension allows the study of waves with up-ward and down-ward frequency chirping across the full range of energetic particle orbits. Under the adiabatic approximation, the phase-space of energetic particles is analysed by a Lagrangian contour approach where the islands are discretised using phase-space waterbags. In order to resolve the dynamics during the fast formation of phase-space islands and find an appropriate initialisation for the system, full-scale modelling is implemented using the bump-on-tail (BOT) code. In addition to investigating the evolution of chirping waves with deepening potentials in a single resonance, we choose specific pitch-angle ranges in which higher resonances can have a relatively considerable contribution to the wave-particle interaction. Hence, the model is also solved in a double-resonance scenario where we report on the significant modifications to the behaviour of the chirping waves due to the $2^{\text{nd}}$ resonance. The model presented in this paper gives a comprehensive 1D paradigm of long range frequency chirping signals observed in experiments with both up-ward and down-ward chirping and multiple resonances.

A centrally symmetric convex body is a convex compact set with non-empty interior that is symmetric about the origin. Of particular interest are those that are both smooth and strictly convex -- known here as regular symmetric bodies -- since they retain many of the useful properties of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean ball. We prove that for any given regular symmetric body $C$, a homothetic packing of copies of $C$ with randomly chosen radii will have a $(2,2)$-sparse planar contact graph. We further prove that there exists a comeagre set of centrally symmetric convex bodies $C$ where any $(2,2)$-sparse planar graph can be realised as the contact graph of a stress-free homothetic packing of $C$., Comment: 28 pages, 2 figures

Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) is the most reported sexually transmitted infection in the United States with a major cause of infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease among women. Despite decades of screening women for Ct, rates increase among young African Americans (AA). We create and analyze an agent-based network model to understand the spread of Ct. We calibrate the model parameters to agree with survey data showing Ct prevalence of 12% of the women and 10% of the men in the 15-25 year-old AA in New Orleans, Louisiana. Our model accounts for long-term and casual partnerships. The network captures assortative mixing of individuals by preserving the joint-degree distributions observed in the data. We compare the efficiency of intervention strategies of randomly screening men, partner notification, which includes partner treatment, partner screening, and rescreening for infection. We compare the difference between treating partners of an infected person both with and without testing them. We observe that although increased Ct screening, rescreening and treating most of the partners of infected people will reduce the prevalence, these mitigations alone are not sufficient to control the epidemic. The current practice is to treat the partners of an infected individual, without first testing them for infection. The model predicts that if a sufficient number of the partners of all infected people are tested and treated, then there is a threshold condition where the epidemic can be mitigated. This threshold results from the expanded treatment network created by treating the partners of the infected partners of an individual. Although these conclusions can help design future Ct mitigation studies, we caution the reader that these conclusions are for the mathematical model, not the real world, and are contingent on the validity of the model assumptions.

We present three results which support the conjecture that a graph is minimally rigid in $d$-dimensional $\ell_p$-space, where $p\in (1,\infty)$ and $p\not=2$, if and only if it is $(d,d)$-tight. Firstly, we introduce a graph bracing operation which preserves independence in the generic rigidity matroid when passing from $\ell_p^d$ to $\ell_p^{d+1}$. We then prove that every $(d,d)$-sparse graph with minimum degree at most $d+1$ and maximum degree at most $d+2$ is independent in $\ell_p^d$. Finally, we prove that every triangulation of the projective plane is minimally rigid in $\ell_p^3$. A catalogue of rigidity preserving graph moves is also provided for the more general class of strictly convex and smooth normed spaces and we show that every triangulation of the sphere is independent for 3-dimensional spaces in this class., Comment: 21 pages

We study the existence of an $n$-fold rotationally symmetric placement of a symmetric graph in the plane allowing a continuous deformation that preserves the symmetry and the distances between adjacent vertices. We show that such a flexible placement exists if and only if the graph has a NAC-colouring satisfying an additional property on the symmetry; a NAC-colouring is a surjective edge colouring by two colours such that every cycle is either monochromatic, or there are at least two edges of each colour.

A new formulation of time-dependent Relaxed Magnetohydrodynamics (RxMHD) is derived variationally from Hamilton's Action Principle using microscopic conservation of mass, and macroscopic conservation of total magnetic helicity, cross helicity and entropy, as the only constraints on variations of density, pressure, fluid velocity, and magnetic vector potential over a relaxation domain. A novel phase-space version of the MHD Lagrangian is derived, which gives Euler--Lagrange equations consistent with previous work on exact ideal and relaxed MHD equilibria with flow, but generalizes the relaxation concept from statics to dynamics. The application of the new dynamical formalism is illustrated for short-wavelength linear waves, and the interface connection conditions for Multiregion Relaxed MHD (MRxMHD) are derived. The Multi-region Relaxed MHD (MRxMHD) has been successful in the construction of equilibria in three-dimensional (3D) configurations. In MRxMHD, the plasma is sliced into sub-volumes separated by ideal interfaces, each undergoing relaxation, allowing the formation of islands and chaos. The resulting equilibrium has a stepped pressure profile across sub-volumes. The Stepped Pressure Equilibrium Code (SPEC) [S.R. Hudson et al., Phys. Plasmas 19, 112502 (2012)] was developed to calculate MRxMHD equilibria numerically. In this work, we have extended the SPEC code to compute MRxMHD equilibria with field-aligned flow and rotation, following the theoretical development to incorporate cross-helicity and angular momentum constraints. The code has been verified for convergence and compared to a Grad-Shafranov solver in 2D. We apply our new tool to study the flow profile change before and after the sawtooth crash of a reversed-field pinch discharge, in which data of the parallel flow is available. We find the promising result that under the constraints of cross-helicity and angular momentum, the parallel flow profile in post-crash SPEC equilibrium is flat in the plasma core and the amplitude of the flow matches experimental observations. Finally, we provide an example equilibrium with a 3D helical field structure as the favoured lower energy state. This will be the first 3D numerical equilibrium in which the flow effects are self-consistently calculated.

Rigidity is the property of a structure that does not flex. It is well studied in discrete geometry and mechanics, and has applications in material science, engineering and biological sciences. A bar-and-joint framework is a pair $(G,p)$ of graph $G$ together with a map $p$ of the vertices of $G$ into the Euclidean plane. We view the edges of $(G, p)$ as bars and the vertices as universal joints. The vertices can move continuously as long as the distances between pairs of adjacent vertices are preserved. The framework is rigid if any such motion preserves the distances between all pairs of vertices. In 1970, Laman obtained a combinatorial characterization of rigid graphs in the Euclidean plane. In 1982, Lov\'asz and Yemini discovered a new characterization and proved that every $6$-connected graph is rigid. Combined with a characterization of global rigidity, their proof actually implies that every 6-connected graph is globally rigid. Consequently, if Fiedler's algebraic connectivity is greater than 5, then $G$ is globally rigid. In this paper, we improve this bound and show that for a graph $G$ with minimum degree $\delta\geq 6$, if its algebraic connectivity is greater than $2+\frac{1}{\delta -1}$, then $G$ is rigid and if its algebraic connectivity is greater than $2+\frac{2}{\delta -1}$, then $G$ is globally rigid. Our results imply that every connected regular Ramanujan graph with degree at least $8$ is globally rigid. We also prove a more general result giving a sufficient spectral condition for the existence of $k$ edge-disjoint spanning rigid subgraphs. The same condition implies that a graph contains $k$ edge-disjoint spanning $2$-connected subgraphs. Given a periodic graph, we wish to determine via combinatorial methods whether it has periodic embeddings in the plane that -- via motions that preserve edge-lengths and periodicity -- can be continuously deformed into another non-congruent embedding of the graph. By introducing NBAC-colourings for the corresponding quotient gain graphs, we identify which periodic graphs have flexible embeddings in the plane when the lattice of periodicity is fixed. We further characterise with NBAC-colourings which 1-periodic graphs have flexible embeddings in the plane with a flexible lattice of periodicity, and characterise in special cases which 2-periodic graphs have flexible embeddings in the plane with a flexible lattice of periodicity., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures

We have made measurements of microwave transmission over the 12 - 18 GHz range and through a simple metamaterial exhibiting a negative index of refraction. The metamaterial consisted of an array of wires cladded in dielectric embedded in a magnetic ferrite. The ferrite replaced the cut-ring structure usually used to create the negative permeability. The dielectric cladding decoupled the ferrite from the wires, thereby allowing the wire array permittivity to be simultaneously negative with the permeability. The simplicity of the design allows for miniaturization of potential microwave devices based on this metamaterial.

Early diagnosis of acute coronary artery occlusion based on electrocardiogram (ECG) findings is essential for prompt delivery of primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Current ST elevation (STE) criteria are specific but insensitive. Consequently, it is likely that many patients are missing out on potentially life-saving treatment. Experts combining non-specific ECG changes with STE detect ischaemia with higher sensitivity, but at the cost of specificity. We show that a deep learning model can detect ischaemia caused by acute coronary artery occlusion with a better balance of sensitivity and specificity than STE criteria, existing computerised analysers or expert cardiologists., Comment: Our attempts to produce what we considered to be an acceptable level of explainability from our algorithm have not yielded a satisfactory account of its internal logic and we do not feel this is acceptable from a clinical application. We prove that a graph has an infinitesimally rigid placement in a non-Euclidean normed plane if and only if it contains a $(2,2)$-tight spanning subgraph. The method uses an inductive construction based on generalised Henneberg moves and the geometric properties of the normed plane. We present a rigorous study of framework rigidity in general finite dimensional normed spaces from the perspective of Lie group actions on smooth manifolds. As an application, we prove an extension of Asimow and Roth's 1978/9 result establishing the equivalence of local, continuous and infinitesimal rigidity for regular bar-and-joint frameworks in a d-dimensional Euclidean space. Further, we obtain upper bounds for the dimension of the space of trivial motions for a framework and establish the flexibility of small frameworks in general non-Euclidean normed spaces., Comment: 15 pages

It is shown that the universal steady Euler flow field, independent of boundary shape or symmetry, in a toroidal domain with fixed boundary obeys a nonlinear Beltrami equation, with the nonlinearity arising from a Boltzmann-like, velocity-dependent factor. Moreover, this is a relaxed velocity field, in the sense that it extremizes the total kinetic energy in the domain under free variations of the velocity field, constrained only by tangential velocity and vorticity boundary conditions and conservation of total fluid helicity and entropy. This is analogous to Woltjer-Taylor relaxation of plasma magnetic field to a stationary state. However, unlike the magnetic field case, attempting to derive slow, quasi-relaxed dynamics from Hamilton's action principle, with constant total fluid helicity as a constraint, fails to agree, in the static limit, with the nonlinear Beltrami solution of the Euler equations. Nevertheless, an action principle that gives a quasi-relaxed dynamics that does agree can be formulated, by introducing a potential representation of the velocity field and defining an analogue of the magnetic helicity as a new constraint. There are well-known problems associated with the idea of (local) gravitational energy in general relativity. We offer a new perspective on those problems by comparison with Newtonian gravitation, and particularly geometrized Newtonian gravitation (i.e., Newton-Cartan theory). We show that there is a natural candidate for the energy density of a Newtonian gravitational field. But we observe that this quantity is gauge dependent, and that it cannot be defined in the geometrized (gauge-free) theory without introducing further structure. In this paper we focus on the problem of finding (small) subhypergraphs in a (large) hypergraph. We use this problem to illustrate that reducing hypergraph problems to graph problems by working with the 2-section is not always a reasonable approach. We begin by defining a generalization of the binomial random graph model to hypergraphs and formalizing several definitions of subhypergraph. The bulk of the paper focusses on determining the expected existence of these types of subhypergraph in random hypergraphs. We also touch on the problem of determining whether a given subgraph appearing in the 2-section is likely to have been induced by a certain subhypergraph in the hypergraph. In this paper we consider two natural notions of connectivity for hypergraphs: weak and strong. We prove that the strong vertex connectivity of a connected hypergraph is bounded by its weak edge connectivity, thereby extending a theorem of Whitney from graphs to hypergraphs. We find that while determining a minimum weak vertex cut can be done in polynomial time and is equivalent to finding a minimum vertex cut in the 2-section of the hypergraph in question, determining a minimum strong vertex cut is NP-hard for general hypergraphs. Moreover, the problem of finding minimum strong vertex cuts remains NP-hard when restricted to hypergraphs with maximum edge size at most 3. We also discuss the relationship between strong vertex connectivity and the minimum transversal problem for hypergraphs, showing that there are classes of hypergraphs for which one of the problems is NP-hard while the other can be solved in polynomial time.

The adiabatic limit of a recently proposed dynamical extension of Taylor relaxation, \emph{multi-region relaxed magnetohydrodynamics} (MRxMHD) is summarized, with special attention to the appropriate definition of relative magnetic helicity. The formalism is illustrated using a simple two-region, sheared-magnetic-field model similar to the Hahm--Kulsrud--Taylor (HKT) rippled-boundary slab model. In MRxMHD a linear Grad--Shafranov equation applies, even at finite ripple amplitude. The adiabatic switching on of boundary ripple excites a shielding current sheet opposing reconnection at a resonant surface. The perturbed magnetic field as a function of ripple amplitude is calculated by invoking conservation of magnetic helicity in the two regions separated by the current sheet. At low ripple amplitude "half islands" appear on each side of the current sheet, locking the rotational transform at the resonant value. Beyond a critical amplitude these islands disappear and the rotational transform develops a discontinuity across the current sheet., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures. In this paper we introduce a natural mathematical structure derived from Samuel Beckett's play "Quad". We call this structure a binary Beckett-Gray code. We enumerate all codes for $n \leq 6$ and give examples for $n=7,8$. Beckett-Gray codes can be realized as successive states of a queue data structure. A general formulation of the problem of calculating the spectrum of stable and unstable eigenmodes of linearized perturbations about a magnetically confined toroidal plasma is presented. The analysis is based on a new hydromagnetic dynamical model, Multi-region Relaxed Magnetohydrodynamics (MRxMHD), which models the plasma-magnetic field system as consisting of multiple regions, containing compressible Euler fluid and Taylor-relaxed magnetic field, separated by flexible ideal-MHD current sheets. This is illustrated using a first-principles analysis of a two-region slab geometry, with periodic boundary conditions to model the outer regions of typical tokamak or reversed-field pinch plasmas. The lowest and second-lowest eigenvalues in plasmas unstable to tearing and kink-tearing modes are calculated. Very near marginal stability the lowest mode obtained using the incompressible approximation to the kinetic energy normalization of the present study is shown to correspond to the eigenvalues found in previous studies with less physical normalizations., Comment: A supplementary version with expanded derivations and discussions is available as the ancillary file.
