1. Data re-uploading in Quantum Machine Learning for time series: application to traffic forecasting

Abstract: Accurate traffic forecasting plays a crucial role in modern Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), as it enables real-time traffic flow management, reduces congestion, and improves the overall efficiency of urban transportation networks. With the rise of Quantum Machine Learning (QML), it has emerged a new paradigm possessing the potential to enhance predictive capabilities beyond what classical machine learning models can achieve. In the present work we pursue a heuristic approach to explore the potential of QML, and focus on a specific transport issue. In particular, as a case study we investigate a traffic forecast task for a major urban area in Athens (Greece), for which we possess high-resolution data. In this endeavor we explore the application of Quantum Neural Networks (QNN), and, notably, we present the first application of quantum data re-uploading in the context of transport forecasting. This technique allows quantum models to better capture complex patterns, such as traffic dynamics, by repeatedly encoding classical data into a quantum state. Aside from providing a prediction model, we spend considerable effort in comparing the performance of our hybrid quantum-classical neural networks with classical deep learning approaches. Our results show that hybrid models achieve competitive accuracy with state-of-the-art classical methods, especially when the number of qubits and re-uploading blocks is increased. While the classical models demonstrate lower computational demands, we provide evidence that increasing the complexity of the quantum model improves predictive accuracy. These findings indicate that QML techniques, and specifically the data re-uploading approach, hold promise for advancing traffic forecasting models and could be instrumental in addressing challenges inherent in ITS environments.

2. With Great Backbones Comes Great Adversarial Transferability

Abstract: Advances in self-supervised learning (SSL) for machine vision have improved representation robustness and model performance, giving rise to pre-trained backbones like \emph{ResNet} and \emph{ViT} models tuned with SSL methods such as \emph{SimCLR}. Due to the computational and data demands of pre-training, the utilization of such backbones becomes a strenuous necessity. However, employing these backbones may inherit vulnerabilities to adversarial attacks. While adversarial robustness has been studied under \emph{white-box} and \emph{black-box} settings, the robustness of models tuned on pre-trained backbones remains largely unexplored. Additionally, the role of tuning meta-information in mitigating exploitation risks is unclear. This work systematically evaluates the adversarial robustness of such models across $20,000$ combinations of tuning meta-information, including fine-tuning techniques, backbone families, datasets, and attack types. We propose using proxy models to transfer attacks, simulating varying levels of target knowledge by fine-tuning these proxies with diverse configurations. Our findings reveal that proxy-based attacks approach the effectiveness of \emph{white-box} methods, even with minimal tuning knowledge. We also introduce a naive "backbone attack," leveraging only the backbone to generate adversarial samples, which outperforms \emph{black-box} attacks and rivals \emph{white-box} methods, highlighting critical risks in model-sharing practices. Finally, our ablations reveal how increasing tuning meta-information impacts attack transferability, measuring each meta-information combination.

3. The Impact of Socio-Economic Challenges and Technological Progress on Economic Inequality: An Estimation with the Perelman Model and Ricci Flow Methods

Abstract: The article examines the impact of 16 key parameters of the Georgian economy on economic inequality, using the Perelman model and Ricci flow mathematical methods. The study aims to conduct a deep analysis of the impact of socio-economic challenges and technological progress on the dynamics of the Gini coefficient. The article examines the following parameters: income distribution, productivity (GDP per hour), unemployment rate, investment rate, inflation rate, migration (net negative), education level, social mobility, trade infrastructure, capital flows, innovative activities, access to healthcare, fiscal policy (budget deficit), international trade (turnover relative to GDP), social protection programs, and technological access. The results of the study confirm that technological innovations and social protection programs have a positive impact on reducing inequality. Productivity growth, improving the quality of education, and strengthening R&D investments increase the possibility of inclusive development. Sensitivity analysis shows that social mobility and infrastructure are important factors that affect economic stability. The accuracy of the model is confirmed by high R^2 values (80-90%) and the statistical reliability of the Z-statistic (<0.05). The study uses Ricci flow methods, which allow for a geometric analysis of the transformation of economic parameters in time and space. Recommendations include the strategic introduction of technological progress, the expansion of social protection programs, improving the quality of education, and encouraging international trade, which will contribute to economic sustainability and reduce inequality. The article highlights multifaceted approaches that combine technological innovation and responses to socio-economic challenges to ensure sustainable and inclusive economic development.

4. Impact of R&D and AI Investments on Economic Growth and Credit Rating

Abstract: The research and development (R&D) phase is essential for fostering innovation and aligns with long-term strategies in both public and private sectors. This study addresses two primary research questions: (1) assessing the relationship between R&D investments and GDP through regression analysis, and (2) estimating the economic value added (EVA) that Georgia must generate to progress from a BB to a BBB credit rating. Using World Bank data from 2014-2022, this analysis found that increasing R&D, with an emphasis on AI, by 30-35% has a measurable impact on GDP. Regression results reveal a coefficient of 7.02%, indicating a 10% increase in R&D leads to a 0.70% GDP rise, with an 81.1% determination coefficient and a strong 90.1% correlation. Georgia's EVA model was calculated to determine the additional value needed for a BBB rating, comparing indicators from Greece, Hungary, India, and Kazakhstan as benchmarks. Key economic indicators considered were nominal GDP, GDP per capita, real GDP growth, and fiscal indicators (government balance/GDP, debt/GDP). The EVA model projects that to achieve a BBB rating within nine years, Georgia requires $61.7 billion in investments. Utilizing EVA and comprehensive economic indicators will support informed decision-making and enhance the analysis of Georgia's economic trajectory.

Abstract: Thanks to their record high refractive index and giant optical anisotropy, van der Waals (vdW) materials have accelerated the development of nanophotonics. However, traditional high refractive index materials, such as titanium dioxide (TiO2), still dominate in the most important visible range. This is due to the current lack of transparent vdW materials across the entire visible spectrum. In this context, we propose that germanium disulfide (GeS2) could offer a significant breakthrough. With its high refractive index, negligible losses, and biaxial optical anisotropy across the whole visible range, GeS2 has the potential to complement TiO2 and close the application gap of vdW materials in the visible spectrum. 6. Performance of Parity QAOA for the Signed Max-Cut Problem

Abstract: The practical implementation of quantum optimization algorithms on noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices requires accounting for their limited connectivity. As such, the Parity architecture was introduced to overcome this limitation by encoding binary optimization problems onto planar quantum chips. We investigate the performance of the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm on the Parity architecture (Parity QAOA) for solving instances of the signed Max-Cut problem on complete and regular graphs. By comparing the algorithms at fixed circuit depth, we demonstrate that Parity QAOA outperforms conventional QAOA implementations based on SWAP networks. Our analysis utilizes Clifford circuits to estimate lower performance bounds for Parity QAOA for problem sizes that would be otherwise inaccessible on classical computers. For single layer circuits we additionally benchmark the recursive variant of the two algorithms, showing that their performance is equal.

7. Speaker Tagging Correction With Non-Autoregressive Language Models

Abstract: Speech applications dealing with conversations require not only recognizing the spoken words but also determining who spoke when. The task of assigning words to speakers is typically addressed by merging the outputs of two separate systems, namely, an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system and a speaker diarization (SD) system. In practical settings, speaker diarization systems can experience significant degradation in performance due to a variety of factors, including uniform segmentation with a high temporal resolution, inaccurate word timestamps, incorrect clustering and estimation of speaker numbers, as well as background noise. Therefore, it is important to automatically detect errors and make corrections if possible. We used a second-pass speaker tagging correction system based on a non-autoregressive language model to correct mistakes in words placed at the borders of sentences spoken by different speakers. We first show that the employed error correction approach leads to reductions in word diarization error rate (WDER) on two datasets: TAL and test set of Fisher. 8. Lattice-tunable substituted iron garnets for low-temperature magnonics

Abstract: The magnetic resonance of iron garnets is at the heart of rich physics and provides a crucial technology used inside microwave components. A barrier still stands in the way of integrated cryogenic devices with iron garnets, because their epitaxy requires paramagnetic substrates that cause large microwave losses at low temperatures. Finding alternative combinations of substrates and magnetic garnets is thus essential to enabling cryogenic integrated magnonics. With this motivation, we develop a new approach to the synthesis of epitaxial garnet films, based on the co-sputtering of binary oxides, enabling a precise and continuous tuning of the iron garnet composition. By substituting a controlled proportion of the iron with additional yttrium, we obtain Y$_{3}$(Y$_{x}$Fe$_{5-x}$)O$_{12}$ films of high crystalline quality that can be lattice-matched to yttrium scandium gallium garnet (YSGG), a diamagnetic substrate suitable for low-temperature applications. Ferromagnetic resonance performed at low temperatures confirms the elimination of substrate paramagnetism losses on YSGG. We also show that the Y$_{3}$(Y$_{x}$Fe$_{5-x}$)O$_{12}$ system can be matched to other substrates, such as gadolinium yttrium scandium gallium garnet and gadolinium scandium gallium garnet. Additionally, we demonstrate that Bi-substituted films of (Bi$_{0.8}$Y$_{2.2}$)Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ also offer ideal lattice matching to YSGG for low-temperature magnetic resonance. 9. StackRAG Agent: Improving Developer Answers with Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Abstract: Developers spend much time finding information that is relevant to their questions. Stack Overflow has been the leading resource, and with the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs), generative models such as ChatGPT are used frequently. However, there is a catch in using each one separately. Searching for answers is time-consuming and tedious, as shown by the many tools developed by researchers to address this issue. On the other, using LLMs is not reliable, as they might produce irrelevant or unreliable answers (i.e., hallucination). In this work, we present StackRAG, a retrieval-augmented Multiagent generation tool based on LLMs that combines the two worlds: aggregating the knowledge from SO to enhance the reliability of the generated answers. Initial evaluations show that the generated answers are correct, accurate, relevant, and useful.

10. OPTune: Efficient Online Preference Tuning

Abstract: Reinforcement learning with human feedback~(RLHF) is critical for aligning Large Language Models (LLMs) with human preference. Compared to the widely studied offline version of RLHF, \emph{e.g.} direct preference optimization (DPO), recent works have shown that the online variants achieve even better alignment. However, online alignment requires on-the-fly generation of new training data, which is costly, hard to parallelize, and suffers from varying quality and utility. In this paper, we propose a more efficient data exploration strategy for online preference tuning (OPTune), which does not rely on human-curated or pre-collected teacher responses but dynamically samples informative responses for on-policy preference alignment. During data generation, OPTune only selects prompts whose (re)generated responses can potentially provide more informative and higher-quality training signals than the existing responses. In the training objective, OPTune reweights each generated response (pair) by its utility in improving the alignment so that learning can be focused on the most helpful samples. Throughout our evaluations, OPTune'd LLMs maintain the instruction-following benefits provided by standard preference tuning whilst enjoying 1.27-1.56x faster training speed due to the efficient data exploration strategy., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

11. A Novel Two-stage Deming Regression Framework with Applications to Association Analysis between Clinical Risks

Abstract: In healthcare, clinical risks are crucial for treatment decisions, yet the analysis of their associations is often overlooked. This gap is particularly significant when balancing risks that are weighed against each other, as in the case of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients facing stroke and bleeding risks with anticoagulant medication. While traditional regression models are ill-suited for this task due to standard errors in risk estimation, a novel two-stage Deming regression framework is proposed to address this issue, offering a more accurate tool for analyzing associations between variables observed with errors of known or estimated variances. The first stage is to obtain the variable values with variances of errors either by estimation or observation, followed by the second stage that fits a Deming regression model potentially subject to a transformation. The second stage accounts for the uncertainties associated with both independent and response variables, including known or estimated variances and additional unknown variances from the model. The complexity arising from different scenarios of uncertainty is handled by existing and advanced variations of Deming regression models. An important practical application is to support personalized treatment recommendations based on clinical risk associations that were identified by the proposed framework. The model's effectiveness is demonstrated by applying it to a real-world dataset of AF-diagnosed patients to explore the relationship between stroke and bleeding risks, providing crucial guidance for making informed decisions regarding anticoagulant medication. Furthermore, the model's versatility in addressing data containing multiple sources of uncertainty such as privacy-protected data suggests promising avenues for future research in regression analysis.

Abstract: This paper presents an energy resolution study of the JUNO experiment, incorporating the latest knowledge acquired during the detector construction phase. The determination of neutrino mass ordering in JUNO requires an exceptional energy resolution better than 3\% at 1~MeV. To achieve this ambitious goal, significant efforts have been undertaken in the design and production of the key components of the JUNO detector. Various factors affecting the detection of inverse beta decay signals have an impact on the energy resolution, extending beyond the statistical fluctuations of the detected number of photons, such as the properties of the liquid scintillator, performance of photomultiplier tubes, and the energy reconstruction algorithm. To account for these effects, a full JUNO simulation and reconstruction approach is employed. This enables the modeling of all relevant effects and the evaluation of associated inputs to accurately estimate the energy resolution. The results of study reveal an energy resolution of 2.95\% at 1~MeV. Furthermore, this study assesses the contribution of major effects to the overall energy resolution budget. This analysis serves as a reference for interpreting future measurements of energy resolution during JUNO data collection. Moreover, it provides a guideline for comprehending the energy resolution characteristics of liquid scintillator-based detectors.

Abstract: We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 \nu$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 \nu$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\bar{\nu}_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. 14. Homonym Sense Disambiguation in the Georgian Language

Abstract: This research proposes a novel approach to the Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) task in the Georgian language, based on supervised fine-tuning of a pre-trained Large Language Model (LLM) on a dataset formed by filtering the Georgian Common Crawls corpus. The dataset is used to train a classifier for words with multiple senses. Additionally, we present experimental results of using LSTM for WSD. Accurately disambiguating homonyms is crucial in natural language processing. Georgian, an agglutinative language belonging to the Kartvelian language family, presents unique challenges in this context. The aim of this paper is to highlight the specific problems concerning homonym disambiguation in the Georgian language and to present our approach to solving them. The techniques discussed in the article achieve 95% accuracy for predicting lexical meanings of homonyms using a hand-classified dataset of over 7500 sentences.

15. Optimizing Surgical Plans for Parenchyma-Sparing Liver Resections through Contour-Guided Resection and Surface Approximation

Abstract: Objective: This study introduces a novel method for defining virtual resections in liver cancer surgery, aimed at enhancing the adaptability of parenchyma-sparing resection (PSR) plans. By comparing these with traditional anatomical resection (AR) plans, we explore the potential for optimization in surgical planning. Methods: Leveraging contours and spline surface approximations directly from the liver's surface, our method aligns closely with actual surgical procedures, offering a more realistic representation of curved resection paths. This technique, tested against 14 cases from the OSLO-COMET study, incorporates surface deformation for versatile plan modeling, comparing volumetric outcomes of PSR and AR. Results: The study highlights significant benefits of PSR over AR, including reduced resected volume ($32.71 \pm 13.80$ ml for PSR vs. $249.53 \pm 135.23$ ml for AR, $p <0.0001$) and higher remnant liver volume ($1922.77 \pm 442.86$ ml for PSR vs. $1716.87 \pm 403.00$ ml for AR, $p <0.0001$). PSR also showed a considerably higher remnant percentage ($98.16 \pm 0.81%$) compared to AR ($87.40 \pm 6.49%$, $p <0.0001$). Conclusion: The proposed approach is able to define virtual resections accommodating a wide variety of resections (i.e., PSR and AR). Careful surgical planning using virtual resections can optimize the resection strategy. Significance: This study presents a novel computer-aided planning system for liver surgery, demonstrating its efficacy and flexibility for definition of virtual resections. Virtual surgery planning can be used for optimization of resection strategies leading to increased preservation of healthy tissue.

16. Generation and optimization of entanglement between atoms chirally coupled to spin cavities

Abstract: We explore the generation and optimization of entanglement between atoms chirally coupled to finite 1D spin chains, functioning as {\it spin cavities}. By diagonalizing the spin cavity Hamiltonian, we identify a parity effect that influences entanglement, with small even-sized cavities chirally coupled to atoms expediting entanglement generation by approximately $50\%$ faster than non-chiral coupling. Applying a classical driving field to the atoms reveals oscillations in concurrence, with resonant dips at specific driving strengths due to the resonances between the driven atom and the spin cavity. Extending our study to systems with energetic disorder, we find that high concurrence can be achieved regardless of disorder strength when the inverse participation ratio of the resulting eigenstates is favorable. Finally, we demonstrate that controlled disorder within the cavity significantly enhances and expedites entanglement generation, achieving higher concurrences up to four times faster than those attained in ordered systems.

17. ODIN: Disentangled Reward Mitigates Hacking in RLHF

Abstract: In this work, we study the issue of reward hacking on the response length, a challenge emerging in Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) on LLMs. A well-formatted, verbose but less helpful response from the LLMs can often deceive LLMs or even human evaluators to achieve high scores. The same issue also holds for some reward models in RL. To address the challenges in both training and evaluation, we establish a more reliable evaluation protocol for comparing different training configurations, which inspects the trade-off between LLM evaluation score and response length obtained by varying training hyperparameters. Based on this evaluation, we conduct large-scale studies, where the results shed insights into the efficacy of hyperparameters and tricks used in RL on mitigating length bias. We further propose to improve the reward model by jointly training two linear heads on shared feature representations to predict the rewards, one trained to correlate with length, and the other trained to decorrelate with length and therefore focus more on the actual content. We then discard the length head in RL to prevent reward hacking on length. Experiments demonstrate that our approach almost eliminates the reward correlation with length, and improves the obtained policy by a significant margin.

Abstract: A promising approach to attain long-distance coherent spin propagation is accessing topological spin-polarized edge states in graphene. Achieving this without external magnetic fields necessitates engineering graphene band structure, obtainable through proximity effects in van der Waals heterostructures. In particular, proximity-induced staggered potentials and spin-orbit coupling are expected to form a topological bulk gap in graphene with gapless helical edge states that are robust against disorder. In this work, we detect the spin-polarized helical edge transport in graphene at zero external magnetic field, allowed by the proximity of an interlayer antiferromagnet, CrPS$_4$. We show the coexistence of the quantum spin Hall (QSH) states and magnetism in graphene, where the induced spin-orbit and exchange couplings also give rise to a large anomalous Hall (AH) effect. The detection of the QSH states at zero external magnetic field, together with the AH signal that persists up to room temperature, opens the route for practical applications of magnetic graphene in quantum spintronic circuitries.

Abstract: Graphene/hBN/graphene tunnel devices offer promise as sensitive mid-infrared photodetectors but the microscopic origin underlying the photoresponse in them remains elusive. In this work, we investigated the photocurrent generation in graphene/hBN/graphene tunnel structures with localized defect states under mid-IR illumination. We demonstrate that the photocurrent in these devices is proportional to the second derivative of the tunnel current with respect to the bias voltage, peaking during tunneling through the hBN impurity level. We revealed that the origin of the photocurrent generation lies in the change of the tunneling probability upon radiation-induced electron heating in graphene layers, in agreement with the theoretical model that we developed. Finally, we show that at a finite bias voltage, the photocurrent is proportional to the either of the graphene layers heating under the illumination, while at zero bias, it is proportional to the heating difference. Thus, the photocurrent in such devices can be used for accurate measurements of the electronic temperature providing a convenient alternative to Johnson noise thermometry.

We prove that for some "optimal" weights these new operators indeed are bounded from the martingale Hardy space $H_{1}(G)$ to the space $\text{weak}-L_{1}(G),$ but is not bounded from $H_{1}(G)$ to the space $L_{1}(G).$

Abstract: Chirality is probably the most mysterious among all symmetry transformations. Very readily broken in biological systems, it is practically absent in naturally occurring inorganic materials and is very challenging to create artificially. Chiral optical wavefronts are often used for the identification, control and discrimination of left- and right-handed biological and other molecules. Thus, it is crucially important to create materials capable of chiral interaction with light, which would allow one to assign arbitrary chiral properties to a light field. In this paper, we utilized van der Waals technology to assemble helical homostructures with chiral properties (e. g. circular dichroism). Because of the large range of van der Waals materials available such helical homostructures can be assigned with very flexible optical properties. We demonstrate our approach by creating helical homostructures based on multilayer As$_2$S$_3$, which offers the most pronounced chiral properties even in thin structures due to its strong biaxial optically anisotropy. Our work showcases that the chirality of an electromagnetic system may emerge at an intermediate level between the molecular and the mesoscopic one due to the tailored arrangement of non-chiral layers of van der Waals crystals and without additional patterning.

22. Exponentially faster preparation of quantum dimers via driven-dissipative stabilization

Abstract: We propose a novel rapid, high-fidelity, and noise-resistant scheme to generate many-body entanglement between multiple qubits stabilized by dissipation into a 1D bath. Using a carefully designed time-dependent drive, our scheme achieves a provably exponential speedup over state-of-the-art dissipative stabilization schemes in 1D baths, which require a timescale that diverges as the target fidelity approaches unity and scales exponentially with the number of qubits. To prepare quantum dimer pairs, our scheme only requires local 2-qubit control Hamiltonians, with a protocol time that is independent of system size. Abstract: The core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is considered one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the supernova (SN) burst presents a unique opportunity for multi-messenger observations of CCSN events. In this study, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed to ensure both prompt alert speed and comprehensive coverage of progenitor stars. It incorporates prompt monitors on the electronic board as well as online monitors at the data acquisition stage. Assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system exhibits sensitivity to pre-SN neutrinos up to a distance of approximately 1.6 (0.9) kiloparsecs and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kiloparsecs for a progenitor mass of 30 solar masses, considering both normal and inverted mass ordering scenarios. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by analyzing the accumulated event anisotropy of inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos. Abstract: The emergence of van der Waals (vdW) materials resulted in the discovery of their giant optical, mechanical, and electronic anisotropic properties, immediately enabling countless novel phenomena and applications. Such success inspired an intensive search for the highest possible anisotropic properties among vdW materials. Furthermore, the identification of the most promising among the huge family of vdW materials is a challenging quest requiring innovative approaches. Here, we suggest an easy-to-use method for such a survey based on the crystallographic geometrical perspective of vdW materials followed by their optical characterization. Using our approach, we found As2S3 as a highly anisotropic vdW material. It demonstrates rare giant in-plane optical anisotropy, high refractive index and transparency in the visible range, overcoming the century-long record set by rutile. Given these benefits, As2S3 opens a pathway towards next-generation nanophotonics as demonstrated by an ultrathin true zero-order quarter-waveplate that combines classical and the Fabry-Perot optical phase accumulations. 25. Quantum Machine Learning for Credit Scoring

Abstract: In this paper we explore the use of quantum machine learning (QML) applied to credit scoring for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). A quantum/classical hybrid approach has been used with several models, activation functions, epochs and other parameters. Results are shown from the best model, using two quantum classifiers and a classical neural network, applied to data for companies in Singapore. We observe significantly more efficient training for the quantum models over the classical models with the quantum model trained for 350 epochs compared to 3500 epochs for comparable prediction performance. Surprisingly, a degradation in the accuracy was observed as the number of qubits was increased beyond 12 qubits and also with the addition of extra classifier blocks in the quantum model. Practical issues for executing on simulators and real quantum computers are also explored. Abstract: We discuss JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo via detecting inverse beta decay reactions of electron anti-neutrinos resulting from the annihilation. We study possible backgrounds to the signature, including the reactor neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, charged- and neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos, backgrounds from muon-induced fast neutrons and cosmogenic isotopes. A fiducial volume cut, as well as the pulse shape discrimination and the muon veto are applied to suppress the above backgrounds. It is shown that JUNO sensitivity to the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation rate in 10 years of exposure would be significantly better than the present-day best limit set by Super-Kamiokande and would be comparable to that expected by Hyper-Kamiokande., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, matches the publised version

Abstract: Shift equivariance is a fundamental principle that governs how we perceive the world - our recognition of an object remains invariant with respect to shifts. Transformers have gained immense popularity due to their effectiveness in both language and vision tasks. While the self-attention operator in vision transformers (ViT) is permutation-equivariant and thus shift-equivariant, patch embedding, positional encoding, and subsampled attention in ViT variants can disrupt this property, resulting in inconsistent predictions even under small shift perturbations. Although there is a growing trend in incorporating the inductive bias of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) into vision transformers, it does not fully address the issue. We propose an adaptive polyphase anchoring algorithm that can be seamlessly integrated into vision transformer models to ensure shift-equivariance in patch embedding and subsampled attention modules, such as window attention and global subsampled attention. Furthermore, we utilize depth-wise convolution to encode positional information. Our algorithms enable ViT, and its variants such as Twins to achieve 100% consistency with respect to input shift, demonstrate robustness to cropping, flipping, and affine transformations, and maintain consistent predictions even when the original models lose 20 percentage points on average when shifted by just a few pixels with Twins' accuracy dropping from 80.57% to 62.40%., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

28. Learning UI-to-Code Reverse Generator Using Visual Critic Without Rendering

Abstract: Automated reverse engineering of HTML/CSS code from UI screenshots is an important yet challenging problem with broad applications in website development and design. In this paper, we propose a novel vision-code transformer (ViCT) composed of a vision encoder processing the screenshots and a language decoder to generate the code. They are initialized by pre-trained models such as ViT/DiT and GPT-2/LLaMA but aligning the two modalities requires end-to-end finetuning, which aims to minimize the visual discrepancy between the code-rendered webpage and the original screenshot. However, the rendering is non-differentiable and causes costly overhead. We address this problem by actor-critic fine-tuning where a visual critic without rendering (ViCR) is developed to predict visual discrepancy given the original and generated code. To train and evaluate our models, we created two synthetic datasets of varying complexity, with over 75,000 unique (code, screenshot) pairs. We evaluate the UI-to-Code performance using a combination of automated metrics such as MSE, BLEU, IoU, and a novel htmlBLEU score. ViCT outperforms a strong baseline model DiT-GPT2, improving IoU from 0.64 to 0.79 and lowering MSE from 12.25 to 9.02. With much lower computational cost, it can achieve comparable performance as when using a larger decoder such as LLaMA.

Abstract: The main task of the Top Tracker detector of the neutrino reactor experiment Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is to reconstruct and extrapolate atmospheric muon tracks down to the central detector. This muon tracker will help to evaluate the contribution of the cosmogenic background to the signal. The Top Tracker is located above JUNO's water Cherenkov Detector and Central Detector, covering about 60% of the surface above them. The JUNO Top Tracker is constituted by the decommissioned OPERA experiment Target Tracker modules. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multianode photomultiplier tubes. Compared to the OPERA Target Tracker, the JUNO Top Tracker uses new electronics able to cope with the high rate produced by the high rock radioactivity compared to the one in Gran Sasso underground laboratory. 30. When is Importance Weighting Correction Needed for Covariate Shift Adaptation?

Abstract: This paper investigates when the importance weighting (IW) correction is needed to address covariate shift, a common situation in supervised learning where the input distributions of training and test data differ. Classic results show that the IW correction is needed when the model is parametric and misspecified. In contrast, recent results indicate that the IW correction may not be necessary when the model is nonparametric and well-specified. We examine the missing case in the literature where the model is nonparametric and misspecified, and show that the IW correction is needed for obtaining the best approximation of the true unknown function for the test distribution. We do this by analyzing IW-corrected kernel ridge regression, covering a variety of settings, including parametric and nonparametric models, well-specified and misspecified settings, and arbitrary weighting functions.

Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), the first multi-kton liquid scintillator detector, which is under construction in China, will have a unique potential to perform a real-time measurement of solar neutrinos well below the few MeV threshold typical for Water Cherenkov detectors. JUNO's large target mass and excellent energy resolution are prerequisites for reaching unprecedented levels of precision. In this paper, we provide estimation of the JUNO sensitivity to 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrinos that can be obtained via a spectral analysis above the 0.45 MeV threshold. This study is performed assuming different scenarios of the liquid scintillator radiopurity, ranging from the most opti mistic one corresponding to the radiopurity levels obtained by the Borexino experiment, up to the minimum requirements needed to perform the neutrino mass ordering determination with reactor antineutrinos - the main goal of JUNO. Our study shows that in most scenarios, JUNO will be able to improve the current best measurements on 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrino fluxes. We also perform a study on the JUNO capability to detect periodical time variations in the solar neutrino flux, such as the day-night modulation induced by neutrino flavor regeneration in Earth, and the modulations induced by temperature changes driven by helioseismic waves.

34. Large Language Models for Biomedical Knowledge Graph Construction: Information extraction from EMR notes

Abstract: The automatic construction of knowledge graphs (KGs) is an important research area in medicine, with far-reaching applications spanning drug discovery and clinical trial design. These applications hinge on the accurate identification of interactions among medical and biological entities. In this study, we propose an end-to-end machine learning solution based on large language models (LLMs) that utilize electronic medical record notes to construct KGs. The entities used in the KG construction process are diseases, factors, treatments, as well as manifestations that coexist with the patient while experiencing the disease. Given the critical need for high-quality performance in medical applications, we embark on a comprehensive assessment of 12 LLMs of various architectures, evaluating their performance and safety attributes. To gauge the quantitative efficacy of our approach by assessing both precision and recall, we manually annotate a dataset provided by the Macula and Retina Institute. We also assess the qualitative performance of LLMs, such as the ability to generate structured outputs or the tendency to hallucinate. The results illustrate that in contrast to encoder-only and encoder-decoder, decoder-only LLMs require further investigation. Additionally, we provide guided prompt design to utilize such LLMs. The application of the proposed methodology is demonstrated on age-related macular degeneration.

35. Window function convolution with deep neural network models

Abstract: Traditional estimators of the galaxy power spectrum and bispectrum are sensitive to the survey geometry. They yield spectra that differ from the true underlying signal since they are convolved with the window function of the survey. For the current and future generations of experiments, this bias is statistically significant on large scales. It is thus imperative that the effect of the window function on the summary statistics of the galaxy distribution is accurately modelled. Moreover, this operation must be computationally efficient in order to allow sampling posterior probabilities while performing Bayesian estimation of the cosmological parameters. In order to satisfy these requirements, we built a deep neural network model that emulates the convolution with the window function, and we show that it provides fast and accurate predictions. We trained (tested) the network using a suite of 2000 (200) cosmological models within the cold dark matter scenario, and demonstrate that its performance is agnostic to the precise values of the cosmological parameters. In all cases, the deep neural network provides models for the power spectra and the bispectrum that are accurate to better than 0.1 per cent on a timescale of 10 $\mu$s., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large liquid scintillator detector designed to explore many topics in fundamental physics. In this paper, the potential on searching for proton decay in $p\to \bar\nu K^+$ mode with JUNO is investigated.The kaon and its decay particles feature a clear three-fold coincidence signature that results in a high efficiency for identification. Moreover, the excellent energy resolution of JUNO permits to suppress the sizable background caused by other delayed signals. Based on these advantages, the detection efficiency for the proton decay via $p\to \bar\nu K^+$ is 36.9% with a background level of 0.2 events after 10 years of data taking. Abstract: Graphene/hBN heterostructures can be considered as one of the basic building blocks for the next-generation optoelectronics mostly owing to the record-high electron mobilities. However, currently, the studies of the intrinsic optical properties of graphene are limited to the standard substrates (SiO2/Si, glass, quartz) despite the growing interest in graphene/hBN heterostructures. This can be attributed to a challenging task of the determination of hBN's strongly anisotropic dielectric tensor in the total optical response. In this study, we overcome this issue through imaging spectroscopic ellipsometry utilizing simultaneous analysis of hBN's optical response with and without graphene monolayers. Our technique allowed us to retrieve the optical constants of graphene from graphene/hBN heterostructures in a broad spectral range of 250-950 nm. Our results suggest that graphene's absorption on hBN may exceed the one of graphene on SiO2/Si by about 60 %.

38. Estimating the minimizer and the minimum value of a regression function under passive design

Abstract: We propose a new method for estimating the minimizer $\boldsymbol{x}^*$ and the minimum value $f^*$ of a smooth and strongly convex regression function $f$ from the observations contaminated by random noise. Our estimator $\boldsymbol{z}_n$ of the minimizer $\boldsymbol{x}^*$ is based on a version of the projected gradient descent with the gradient estimated by a regularized local polynomial algorithm. Next, we propose a two-stage procedure for estimation of the minimum value $f^*$ of regression function $f$. At the first stage, we construct an accurate enough estimator of $\boldsymbol{x}^*$, which can be, for example, $\boldsymbol{z}_n$. At the second stage, we estimate the function value at the point obtained in the first stage using a rate optimal nonparametric procedure. We derive non-asymptotic upper bounds for the quadratic risk and optimization error of $\boldsymbol{z}_n$, and for the risk of estimating $f^*$. We establish minimax lower bounds showing that, under certain choice of parameters, the proposed algorithms achieve the minimax optimal rates of convergence on the class of smooth and strongly convex functions., Comment: 35 pages

39. Locally Smoothed Gaussian Process Regression

Abstract: We develop a novel framework to accelerate Gaussian process regression (GPR). In particular, we consider localization kernels at each data point to down-weigh the contributions from other data points that are far away, and we derive the GPR model stemming from the application of such localization operation. Through a set of experiments, we demonstrate the competitive performance of the proposed approach compared to full GPR, other localized models, and deep Gaussian processes. Crucially, these performances are obtained with considerable speedups compared to standard global GPR due to the sparsification effect of the Gram matrix induced by the localization operation.

40. Importance Weighting Correction of Regularized Least-Squares for Covariate and Target Shifts

Abstract: In many real world problems, the training data and test data have different distributions. This situation is commonly referred as a dataset shift. The most common settings for dataset shift often considered in the literature are {\em covariate shift } and {\em target shift}. Importance weighting (IW) correction is a universal method for correcting the bias present in learning scenarios under dataset shift. The question one may ask is: does IW correction work equally well for different dataset shift scenarios? By investigating the generalization properties of the weighted kernel ridge regression (W-KRR) under covariate and target shifts we show that the answer is negative, except when IW is bounded and the model is wellspecified. In the latter cases, a minimax optimal rates are achieved by importance weighted kernel ridge regression (IW-KRR) in both, covariate and target shift scenarios. Slightly relaxing the boundedness condition of the IW we show that the IW-KRR still achieves the optimal rates under target shift while leading to slower rates for covariate shift. In the case of the model misspecification we show that the performance of the W-KRR under covariate shift could be substantially increased by designing an alternative reweighting function. The distinction between misspecified and wellspecified scenarios does not seem to be crucial in the learning problems under target shift., Comment: The paper can be significantly improved

Abstract: The physics potential of detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged-current (CC), neutral-current (NC) and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of $^{13}$C nuclei in the liquid-scintillator detectors and the {expected} low background level, $^8$B solar neutrinos would be observable in the CC and NC interactions on $^{13}$C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC and ES channels to guarantee the $^8$B solar neutrino observation. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with ten years of data, can reach the {1$\sigma$} precision levels of 5%, 8% and 20% for the $^8$B neutrino flux, $\sin^2\theta_{12}$, and $\Delta m^2_{21}$, respectively. It would be unique and helpful to probe the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics. Abstract: Traditional data lakes provide critical data infrastructure for analytical workloads by enabling time travel, running SQL queries, ingesting data with ACID transactions, and visualizing petabyte-scale datasets on cloud storage. They allow organizations to break down data silos, unlock data-driven decision-making, improve operational efficiency, and reduce costs. However, as deep learning usage increases, traditional data lakes are not well-designed for applications such as natural language processing (NLP), audio processing, computer vision, and applications involving non-tabular datasets. This paper presents Deep Lake, an open-source lakehouse for deep learning applications developed at Activeloop. Deep Lake maintains the benefits of a vanilla data lake with one key difference: it stores complex data, such as images, videos, annotations, as well as tabular data, in the form of tensors and rapidly streams the data over the network to (a) Tensor Query Language, (b) in-browser visualization engine, or (c) deep learning frameworks without sacrificing GPU utilization. Datasets stored in Deep Lake can be accessed from PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, and integrate with numerous MLOps tools.

Abstract: We present the detection potential for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), using the inverse-beta-decay (IBD) detection channel on free protons. We employ the latest information on the DSNB flux predictions, and investigate in detail the background and its reduction for the DSNB search at JUNO. The atmospheric neutrino induced neutral current (NC) background turns out to be the most critical background, whose uncertainty is carefully evaluated from both the spread of model predictions and an envisaged \textit{in situ} measurement. We also make a careful study on the background suppression with the pulse shape discrimination (PSD) and triple coincidence (TC) cuts. With latest DSNB signal predictions, more realistic background evaluation and PSD efficiency optimization, and additional TC cut, JUNO can reach the significance of 3$\sigma$ for 3 years of data taking, and achieve better than 5$\sigma$ after 10 years for a reference DSNB model. In the pessimistic scenario of non-observation, JUNO would strongly improve the limits and exclude a significant region of the model parameter space., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures, final published version in JCAP

Abstract: Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3 % at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5,000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Abstract: The growing families of two-dimensional crystals derived from naturally occurring van der Waals materials offer an unprecedented platform to investigate elusive physical phenomena and could be of use in a diverse range of devices. Of particular interest are recently reported atomic sheets of non-van der Waals materials, which could allow a better comprehension of the nature of structural bonds and increase the functionality of prospective heterostructures. Here, we study the optostructural properties of ultrathin non-van der Waals InGaS3 sheets produced by standard mechanical cleavage. Our ab initio calculation results suggest an emergence of authentically delicate out-of-plane covalent bonds within its unit cell, and, as a consequence, an artificial generation of layered structure within the material. Those yield to singular layer isolation energies of around 50 meVA-2, which is comparable with the conventional van der Waals material's monolayer isolation energies of 20 - 60 meVA-2. In addition, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the structural, vibrational, and optical properties of the materials presenting that it is a wide bandgap (2.73 eV) semiconductor with a high-refractive index (higher than 2.5) and negligible losses in the visible and infrared spectral ranges. It makes it a perfect candidate for further establishment of visible-range all-dielectric nanophotonics.

Abstract: JUNO is a multi-purpose neutrino observatory under construction in the south of China. This publication presents new sensitivity estimates for the measurement of the $\Delta m^2_{31}$, $\Delta m^2_{21}$, $\sin^2 \theta_{12}$, and $\sin^2 \theta_{13}$ oscillation parameters using reactor antineutrinos, which is one of the primary physics goals of the experiment. The sensitivities are obtained using the best knowledge available to date on the location and overburden of the experimental site, the nuclear reactors in the surrounding area and beyond, the detector response uncertainties, and the reactor antineutrino spectral shape constraints expected from the TAO satellite detector. It is found that the $\Delta m^2_{31}$, $\Delta m^2_{21}$, and $\sin^2 \theta_{12}$ oscillation parameters will be determined to better than 0.5% precision in six years of data collection, which represents approximately an order of magnitude improvement over existing constraints., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Chinese Physics C

48. On the fractional Korn inequality in bounded domains: Counterexamples to the case $ps<1$

Abstract: The validity of Korn's first inequality in the fractional setting in bounded domains has been open. We resolve this problem by proving that in fact Korn's first inequality holds in the case $ps>1$ for fractional $W^{s,p}_0(\Omega)$ Sobolev fields in open and bounded $C^{1}$-regular domains $\Omega\subset \mathbb R^n$. Also, in the case $ps<1,$ for any open bounded $C^1$ domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb R^n$ we construct counterexamples to the inequality, i.e., Korn's first inequality fails to hold in bounded domains. The proof of the inequality in the case $ps>1$ follows a standard compactness approach adopted in the classical case, combined with a Hardy inequality, and a recently proven Korn second inequality by Mengesha and Scott [\textit{Commun. Math. Sci.,} Vol. 20, N0. 2, 405--423, 2022]. Abstract: Let $\{H_{n,m}\}_{n,m\in \mathbb{N}}$ be the two dimensional Haar system and $S_{n,m}f$ be the rectangular partial sums of its Fourier series with respect to some $f\in L^1([0,1)^2)$. Let $\mathcal{N}, \mathcal{M}\subset \mathbb{N}$ be two disjoint subsets of indices. We give a necessary and sufficient condition on the sets $\mathcal{N}, \mathcal{M}$ so that for some $f \in L^1([0,1)^2)$, $f \geq 0$ one has for almost every $z\in [0,1)^2$ that $$ \lim_{n,m \rightarrow \infty;n,m \in \mathcal{N}}S_{n,m}f(z)=f(z)\quad \text{ and }\quad \limsup_{n,m \rightarrow \infty;n,m \in \mathcal{M}}|S_{n,m}f(z)|=\infty. $$ The proof uses some constructions from the theory of low-discrepancy sequences such as the van der Corput sequence and an associated tiling of the plane. This extends some earlier results.

50. PION: Simulations of Wind-Blown Nebulae

Abstract: We present an overview of PION, an open-source software project for solving radiation-magnetohydrodynamics equations on a nested grid, aimed at modelling asymmetric nebulae around massive stars. A new implementation of hybrid OpenMP/MPI parallel algorithms is briefly introduced, and improved scaling is demonstrated compared with the current release version. Three-dimensional simulations of an expanding nebula around a Wolf-Rayet star are then presented and analysed, similar to previous 2D simulations in the literature. The evolution of the emission measure of the gas and the X-ray surface brightness are calculated as a function of time, and some qualitative comparison with observations is made., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, conference proceedings, IAUS362: The predictive power of computational astrophysics as discovery tool (D.
