In deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering, the lepton-jet azimuthal angular asymmetry is measured using data collected with the H1 detector at HERA. When the average transverse momentum of the lepton-jet system, $\lvert \vec{P}_\perp \rvert $, is much larger than the total transverse momentum of the system, $\lvert \vec{q}_\perp \rvert$, the asymmetry between parallel and antiparallel configurations, $\vec{P}_\perp$ and $\vec{q}_\perp$, is expected to be generated by initial and final state soft gluon radiation and can be predicted using perturbation theory. Quantifying the angular properties of the asymmetry therefore provides an additional test of the strong force. Studying the asymmetry is important for future measurements of intrinsic asymmetries generated by the proton's constituents through Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs), where this asymmetry constitutes a dominant background. We propose a novel method to enhance the accuracy of the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm by integrating altitude constraints from a barometric pressure sensor. While ICP is widely used in mobile robotics for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping ( SLAM ), it is susceptible to drift, especially in underconstrained environments such as vertical shafts. To address this issue, we propose to augment ICP with altimeter measurements, reliably constraining drifts along the gravity vector. To demonstrate the potential of altimetry in SLAM , we offer an analysis of calibration procedures and noise sensitivity of various pressure sensors, improving measurements to centimeter-level accuracy. Leveraging this accuracy, we propose a novel ICP formulation that integrates altitude measurements along the gravity vector, thus simplifying the optimization problem to 3-Degree Of Freedom (DOF). Terrain awareness is an essential milestone to enable truly autonomous off-road navigation. Accurately predicting terrain characteristics allows optimizing a vehicle's path against potential hazards. Recent methods use deep neural networks to predict traversability-related terrain properties in a self-supervised manner, relying on proprioception as a training signal. However, onboard cameras are inherently limited by their point-of-view relative to the ground, suffering from occlusions and vanishing pixel density with distance. This paper introduces a novel approach for self-supervised terrain characterization using an aerial perspective from a hovering drone. We capture terrain-aligned images while sampling the environment with a ground vehicle, effectively training a simple predictor for vibrations, bumpiness, and energy consumption. Our dataset includes 2.8 km of off-road data collected in forest environment, comprising 13 484 ground-based images and 12 935 aerial images. Our findings show that drone imagery improves terrain property prediction by 21.37 % on the whole dataset and 37.35 % in high vegetation, compared to ground robot images. We conduct ablation studies to identify the main causes of these performance improvements. Generally, the small size of public medical imaging datasets coupled with stringent privacy concerns, hampers the advancement of data-hungry deep learning models in medical imaging. This study addresses these challenges for 3D cardiac MRI images in the short-axis view. We propose Latent Diffusion Models that generate synthetic images conditioned on medical attributes, while ensuring patient privacy through differentially private model training. To our knowledge, this is the first work to apply and quantify differential privacy in 3D medical image generation. We pre-train our models on public data and finetune them with differential privacy on the UK Biobank dataset. Our experiments reveal that pre-training significantly improves model performance, achieving a Fr\'echet Inception Distance (FID) of 26.77 at $\epsilon=10$, compared to 92.52 for models without pre-training. Additionally, we explore the trade-off between privacy constraints and image quality, investigating how tighter privacy budgets affect output controllability and may lead to degraded performance. Our results demonstrate that proper consideration during training with differential privacy can substantially improve the quality of synthetic cardiac MRI images, but there are still notable challenges in achieving consistent medical realism.

With 95% of Internet traffic now encrypted, an effective approach to classifying this traffic is crucial for network security and management. This paper introduces ECHO -- a novel optimization process for ML/DL-based encrypted traffic classification. ECHO targets both classification time and memory utilization and incorporates two innovative techniques. The first component, HO (Hyperparameter Optimization of binnings), aims at creating efficient traffic representations. While previous research often uses representations that map packet sizes and packet arrival times to fixed-sized bins, we show that non-uniform binnings are significantly more efficient. These non-uniform binnings are derived by employing a hyperparameter optimization algorithm in the training stage. HO significantly improves accuracy given a required representation size, or, equivalently, achieves comparable accuracy using smaller representations. Then, we introduce EC (Early Classification of traffic), which enables faster classification using a cascade of classifiers adapted for different exit times, where classification is based on the level of confidence. EC reduces the average classification latency by up to 90\%. Remarkably, this method not only maintains classification accuracy but also, in certain cases, improves it. Using three publicly available datasets, we demonstrate that the combined method, Early Classification with Hyperparameter Optimization (ECHO), leads to a significant improvement in classification efficiency.

In this paper, we propose the FoMo (For\^et Montmorency) dataset: a comprehensive, multi-season data collection. Located in the Montmorency Forest, Quebec, Canada, our dataset will capture a rich variety of sensory data over six distinct trajectories totaling 6 kilometers, repeated through different seasons to accumulate 42 kilometers of recorded data. The boreal forest environment increases the diversity of datasets for mobile robot navigation. This proposed dataset will feature a broad array of sensor modalities, including lidar, radar, and a navigation-grade Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), against the backdrop of challenging boreal forest conditions. Notably, the FoMo dataset will be distinguished by its inclusion of seasonal variations, such as changes in tree canopy and snow depth up to 2 meters, presenting new challenges for robot navigation algorithms. Alongside, we will offer a centimeter-level accurate ground truth, obtained through Post Processed Kinematic (PPK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) correction, facilitating precise evaluation of odometry and localization algorithms. This work aims to spur advancements in autonomous navigation, enabling the development of robust algorithms capable of handling the dynamic, unstructured environments characteristic of boreal forests. With a public odometry and localization leaderboard and a dedicated software suite, we invite the robotics community to engage with the FoMo dataset by exploring new frontiers in robot navigation under extreme environmental variations. Networks such as the Internet are essential for our connected world. Quantum computing poses a threat to this heterogeneous infrastructure since it threatens fundamental security mechanisms. Therefore, a migration to post-quantum-cryptography (PQC) is necessary for networks and their components. At the moment, there is little knowledge on how such migrations should be structured and implemented in practice. Our systematic literature review addresses migration approaches for IP networks towards PQC. It surveys papers about the migration process and exemplary real-world software system migrations. On the process side, we found that terminology, migration steps, and roles are not defined precisely or consistently across the literature. Still, we identified four major phases and appropriate substeps which we matched with also emerging archetypes of roles. In terms of real-world migrations, we see that reports used several different PQC implementations and hybrid solutions for migrations of systems belonging to a wide range of system types. Across all papers we noticed three major challenges for adopters: missing experience of PQC and a high realization effort, concerns about the security of the upcoming system, and finally, high complexity. Our findings indicate that recent standardization efforts already push quantum-safe networking forward. However, the literature is still not in consensus about definitions and best practices. Implementations are mostly experimental and not necessarily practical, leading to an overall chaotic situation. The H1 Collaboration at HERA reports the first measurement of groomed event shape observables in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) at $\sqrt{s}=319$ GeV, using data recorded between the years 2003 and 2007 with an integrated luminosity of $351$ pb$^{-1}$. Event shapes provide incisive probes of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD. Grooming techniques have been used for jet measurements in hadronic collisions; this paper presents the first application of grooming to DIS data. The analysis is carried out in the Breit frame, utilizing the novel Centauro jet clustering algorithm that is designed for DIS event topologies. Events are required to have squared momentum-transfer $Q^2 > 150$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $ 0.2 < y < 0.7$. We report measurements of the production cross section of groomed event 1-jettiness and groomed invariant mass for several choices of grooming parameter. The H1 Collaboration reports the first measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable $\tau_1^b$ in neutral-current deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). The observable $\tau_1^b$ is equivalent to a thrust observable defined in the Breit frame. The data sample was collected at the HERA $ep$ collider in the years 2003-2007 with center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=319\,\text{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $351.1\,\text{pb}^{-1}$. Triple differential cross sections are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$, event virtuality $Q^2$, and inelasticity $y$, in the kinematic region $Q^2>150\,\text{GeV}^{2}$. Single differential cross section are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$ in a limited kinematic range. Double differential cross sections are measured, in contrast, integrated over $\tau_1^b$ and represent the inclusive neutral-current DIS cross section measured as a function of $Q^2$ and $y$. The data are compared to a variety of predictions and include classical and modern Monte Carlo event generators, predictions in fixed-order perturbative QCD where calculations up to $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3)$ are available for $\tau_1^b$ or inclusive DIS, and resummed predictions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed order predictions at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^2)$. These comparisons reveal sensitivity of the 1-jettiness observable to QCD parton shower and resummation effects, as well as the modeling of hadronization and fragmentation. Within their range of validity, the fixed-order predictions provide a good description of the data. The Breit frame provides a natural frame to analyze lepton-proton scattering events. In this reference frame, the parton model hard interactions between a quark and an exchanged boson defines the coordinate system such that the struck quark is back-scattered along the virtual photon momentum direction. In Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), higher order perturbative or non-perturbative effects can change this picture drastically. As Bjorken-$x$ decreases below one half, a rather peculiar event signature is predicted with increasing probability, where no radiation is present in one of the two Breit-frame hemispheres and all emissions are to be found in the other hemisphere. At higher orders in $\alpha_s$ or in the presence of soft QCD effects, predictions of the rate of these events are far from trivial, and that motivates measurements with real data. We report on the first observation of the empty current hemisphere events in electron-proton collisions at the HERA collider using data recorded with the H1 detector at a center-of-mass energy of 319 GeV. The fraction of inclusive neutral-current DIS events with an empty hemisphere is found to be $0.0112 \pm 3.9\,\%_\text{stat} \pm 4.5\,\%_\text{syst} \pm 1.6\,\%_\text{mod}$ in the selected kinematic region of $150< Q^2<1500$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $0.14< y<0.7$. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 351.1 pb$^{-1}$, sufficient to enable differential cross section measurements of these events. A modern cold triple axis spectrometer is being planned for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Here, we describe the design of an incident beamline that will put a flux of $\sim 10^8\mathrm{\frac{n}{cm^2 s}}$ on a sample with an area of 2 cm x 2 cm. It takes current physical constraints at HFIR into account and it can accommodate both single and multiplexed analyzer-detector secondary spectrometers and large superconducting magnets. The proposed incident beamline includes a multi-channel guide with horizontal focusing, a neutron velocity selector, components to facilitate an incident beam polarization option, and a double-focusing pyrolytic graphite monochromator. This work describes the process of optimizing the guide system and monochromator and summarizes the expected performance of the incident beamline for non-polarized operation.

A modern cold triple-axis spectrometer to study quantum condensed matter systems is planned for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Here, we describe the conceptual principles and design of a secondary spectrometer using a multiplexed, prismatic analyzer system relying on graphite crystals and inspired by the successful implementation of the Continuous Angle Multiple Energy Analysis (CAMEA) spectrometers at the Paul Scherrer Institute. This project is currently known as MANTA for Multi-analyzer Neutron Triple-Axis. We report Monte-Carlo ray-tracing simulations on a simple but realistic sample scattering kernel to further illustrate the prismatic analyzer concept's workings, calibration, and performance. Then, we introduce a new statistical analysis approach based on the prismatic analyzer concept to improve the number of final energies measured on the spectrometer. Numerous datasets and benchmarks exist to assess and compare Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms. Nevertheless, their precision must follow the rate at which SLAM algorithms improved in recent years. Moreover, current datasets fall short of comprehensive data-collection protocol for reproducibility and the evaluation of the precision or accuracy of the recorded trajectories. With this objective in mind, we proposed the Robotic Total Stations Ground Truthing dataset (RTS-GT) dataset to support localization research with the generation of six-Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) ground truth trajectories. This novel dataset includes six-DOF ground truth trajectories generated using a system of three Robotic Total Stations (RTSs) tracking moving robotic platforms. Furthermore, we compare the performance of the RTS-based system to a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based setup. The dataset comprises around sixty experiments conducted in various conditions over a period of 17 months, and encompasses over 49 kilometers of trajectories, making it the most extensive dataset of RTS-based measurements to date. Additionally, we provide the precision of all poses for each experiment, a feature not found in the current state-of-the-art datasets. Our results demonstrate that RTSs provide measurements that are 22 times more stable than GNSS in various environmental settings, making them a valuable resource for SLAM benchmark development., Comment: 7 pages; Accepted to ICRA 2024

Benchmarks stand as vital cornerstones in elevating SLAM algorithms within mobile robotics. Consequently, ensuring accurate and reproducible ground truth generation is vital for fair evaluation. A majority of outdoor ground truths are generated by GNSS, which can lead to discrepancies over time, especially in covered areas. However, research showed that RTS setups are more precise and can alternatively be used to generate these ground truths. In our work, we compare both RTS and GNSS systems' precision and repeatability through a set of experiments conducted weeks and months apart in the same area. We demonstrated that RTS setups give more reproducible results, with disparities having a median value of 8.6 mm compared to a median value of 10.6 cm coming from a GNSS setup. In the context of robotics, accurate ground truth positioning is essential for the development of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) and control algorithms. Robotic Total Stations (RTSs) provide accurate and precise reference positions in different types of outdoor environments, especially when compared to the limited accuracy of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in cluttered areas. Three RTSs give the possibility to obtain the six-Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) reference pose of a robotic platform. However, the uncertainty of every pose is rarely computed for trajectory evaluation. As evaluation algorithms are getting increasingly precise, it becomes crucial to take into account this uncertainty. We propose a method to compute this six-DOF uncertainty from the fusion of three RTSs based on Monte Carlo (MC) methods. This solution relies on point-to-point minimization to propagate the noise of RTSs on the pose of the robotic platform. Five main noise sources are identified to model this uncertainty: noise inherent to the instrument, tilt noise, atmospheric factors, time synchronization noise, and extrinsic calibration noise. Based on extensive experimental work, we compare the impact of each noise source on the prism uncertainty and the final estimated pose. Tested on more than 50 km of trajectories, our comparison highlighted the importance of the calibration noise and the measurement distance, which should be ideally under 75 m. We present a novel Active Magnetic Shield (AMS), designed and implemented for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The experiment will perform a high-sensitivity search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron. Magnetic-field stability and control is of key importance for n2EDM. A large, cubic, 5m side length, magnetically shielded room (MSR) provides a passive, quasi-static shielding-factor of about 10^5 for its inner sensitive volume. The AMS consists of a system of eight complex, feedback-controlled compensation coils constructed on an irregular grid spanned on a volume of less than 1000m^3 around the MSR. The AMS is designed to provide a stable and uniform magnetic-field environment around the MSR, while being reasonably compact. The system can compensate static and variable magnetic fields up to +-50muT (homogeneous components) and +-5muT (first-order gradients), suppressing them to a few muT in the sub-Hertz frequency range. The presented design concept and implementation of the AMS fulfills the requirements of the n2EDM experiment and can be useful for other applications, where magnetically silent environments are important and spatial constraints inhibit simpler geometrical solutions.

Machine learning tasks over image databases often generate masks that annotate image content (e.g., saliency maps, segmentation maps, depth maps) and enable a variety of applications (e.g., determine if a model is learning spurious correlations or if an image was maliciously modified to mislead a model). While queries that retrieve examples based on mask properties are valuable to practitioners, existing systems do not support them efficiently. In this paper, we formalize the problem and propose MaskSearch, a system that focuses on accelerating queries over databases of image masks while guaranteeing the correctness of query results. MaskSearch leverages a novel indexing technique and an efficient filter-verification query execution framework. Experiments with our prototype show that MaskSearch, using indexes approximately 5% of the compressed data size, accelerates individual queries by up to two orders of magnitude and consistently outperforms existing methods on various multi-query workloads that simulate dataset exploration and analysis processes.

We report on a search for a new, short-range, spin-dependent interaction using a modified version of the experimental apparatus used to measure the permanent neutron electric dipole moment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. This interaction, which could be mediated by axion-like particles, concerned the unpolarized nucleons (protons and neutrons) near the material surfaces of the apparatus and polarized ultracold neutrons stored in vacuum. The dominant systematic uncertainty resulting from magnetic-field gradients was controlled to an unprecedented level of approximately 4 pT/cm using an array of optically-pumped cesium vapor magnetometers and magnetic-field maps independently recorded using a dedicated measurement device. No signature of a theoretically predicted new interaction was found, and we set a new limit on the product of the scalar and the pseudoscalar couplings $g_sg_p\lambda^2 < 8.3 \times 10^{-28}\,\text{m}^2$ (95% C.L.) in a range of $5\,\mu\text{m} < \lambda < 25\,\text{mm}$ for the monopole-dipole interaction. This new result confirms and improves our previous limit by a factor of 2.7 and provides the current tightest limit obtained with free neutrons.

International benchmarking competitions have become fundamental for the comparative performance assessment of image analysis methods. However, little attention has been given to investigating what can be learnt from these competitions. Do they really generate scientific progress? What are common and successful participation strategies? What makes a solution superior to a competing method? To address this gap in the literature, we performed a multi-center study with all 80 competitions that were conducted in the scope of IEEE ISBI 2021 and MICCAI 2021. Statistical analyses performed based on comprehensive descriptions of the submitted algorithms linked to their rank as well as the underlying participation strategies revealed common characteristics of winning solutions. These typically include the use of multi-task learning (63%) and/or multi-stage pipelines (61%), and a focus on augmentation (100%), image preprocessing (97%), data curation (79%), and postprocessing (66%). The "typical" lead of a winning team is a computer scientist with a doctoral degree, five years of experience in biomedical image analysis, and four years of experience in deep learning. Two core general development strategies stood out for highly-ranked teams: the reflection of the metrics in the method design and the focus on analyzing and handling failure cases. According to the organizers, 43% of the winning algorithms exceeded the state of the art but only 11% completely solved the respective domain problem. The insights of our study could help researchers (1) improve algorithm development strategies when approaching new problems, and (2) focus on open research questions revealed by this work., Comment: accepted to CVPR 2023

The radiation pattern within high energy quark- and gluon-initiated jets (jet substructure) is used extensively as a precision probe of the strong force as well as an environment for optimizing event generators with numerous applications in high energy particle and nuclear physics. Looking at electron-proton collisions is of particular interest as many of the complications present at hadron colliders are absent. A detailed study of modern jet substructure observables, jet angularities, in electron-proton collisions is presented using data recorded using the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is unbinned and multi-dimensional, using machine learning to correct for detector effects. All of the available reconstructed object information of the respective jets is interpreted by a graph neural network, achieving superior precision on a selected set of jet angularities. Training these networks was enabled by the use of a large number of GPUs in the Perlmutter supercomputer at Berkeley Lab. The particle jets are reconstructed in the laboratory frame, using the $k_{\mathrm{T}}$ jet clustering algorithm. Results are reported at high transverse momentum transfer $Q^2>150$ GeV${}^2$, and inelasticity $0.2 < y < 0.7$. The analysis is also performed in sub-regions of $Q^2$, thus probing scale dependencies of the substructure variables. We introduce VOCALExplore, a system designed to support users in building domain-specific models over video datasets. VOCALExplore supports interactive labeling sessions and trains models using user-supplied labels. VOCALExplore maximizes model quality by automatically deciding how to select samples based on observed skew in the collected labels. It also selects the optimal video representations to use when training models by casting feature selection as a rising bandit problem. Finally, VOCALExplore implements optimizations to achieve low latency without sacrificing model performance. We demonstrate that VOCALExplore achieves close to the best possible model quality given candidate acquisition functions and feature extractors, and it does so with low visible latency (~1 second per iteration) and no expensive preprocessing.

The ultracold neutron (UCN) source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) provides high intensities of storable neutrons for fundamental physics experiments. The neutron velocity spectrum parallel to the beamline axis was determined by time-of-flight spectroscopy using a neutron chopper. In particular, the temporal evolution of the spectrum during neutron production and UCN storage in the source storage volume was investigated and compared to Monte Carlo simulation results. A softening of the measured spectrum from a mean velocity of 7.7(1) m s$^{-1}$ to 5.1(1) m s$^{-1}$ occurred within the first 30 s after the proton beam pulse had impinged on the spallation target. A spectral hardening was observed over longer time scales of one measurement day, consistent with the effect of surface degradation of the solid deuterium moderator.

We introduce EQUI-VOCAL: a new system that automatically synthesizes queries over videos from limited user interactions. The user only provides a handful of positive and negative examples of what they are looking for. EQUI-VOCAL utilizes these initial examples and additional ones collected through active learning to efficiently synthesize complex user queries. Our approach enables users to find events without database expertise, with limited labeling effort, and without declarative specifications or sketches. Core to EQUI-VOCAL's design is the use of spatio-temporal scene graphs in its data model and query language and a novel query synthesis approach that works on large and noisy video data. To shed light on the status quo of algorithm development in the specific field of biomedical imaging analysis, we designed an international survey that was issued to all participants of challenges conducted in conjunction with the IEEE ISBI 2021 and MICCAI 2021 conferences (80 competitions in total). The survey covered participants' expertise and working environments, their chosen strategies, as well as algorithm characteristics. A median of 72% challenge participants took part in the survey. According to our results, knowledge exchange was the primary incentive (70%) for participation, while the reception of prize money played only a minor role (16%). While a median of 80 working hours was spent on method development, a large portion of participants stated that they did not have enough time for method development (32%). 25% perceived the infrastructure to be a bottleneck. Overall, 94% of all solutions were deep learning-based. Of these, 84% were based on standard architectures. 43% of the respondents reported that the data samples (e.g., images) were too large to be processed at once. This was most commonly addressed by patch-based training (69%), downsampling (37%), and solving 3D analysis tasks as a series of 2D tasks. K-fold cross-validation on the training set was performed by only 37% of the participants and only 50% of the participants performed ensembling based on multiple identical models (61%) or heterogeneous models (39%). 48% of the respondents applied postprocessing steps.

Ultra-low-mass axions are a viable dark matter candidate and may form a coherently oscillating classical field. Nuclear spins in experiments on Earth might couple to this oscillating axion dark-matter field, when propagating on Earth's trajectory through our Galaxy. This spin coupling resembles an oscillating pseudo-magnetic field which modulates the spin precession of nuclear spins. Here we report on the null result of a demonstration experiment searching for a frequency modulation of the free spin-precession signal of \magHg in a \SI{1}{\micro\tesla} magnetic field. Our search covers the axion mass range $10^{-16}~\textrm{eV} \lesssim m_a \lesssim 10^{-13}~\textrm{eV}$ and achieves a peak sensitivity to the axion-nucleon coupling of $g_{aNN} \approx 3.5 \times 10^{-6}~\textrm{GeV}^{-1}$., Comment: 18 pages, 4 images, submitted to SciPost Physics

We determined the ultracold neutron (UCN) production rate by superthermal conversion in the solid deuterium (sD$_2$) moderator of the UCN source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). In particular, we considered low amounts of less than $20\,$mol of D$_2$, deposited on the cooled moderator vessel surfaces in thin films of a few mm thickness. We measured the isotopic ($ c_\text{HD} < 0.2 \, \% $) and isomeric ($ c_\text{para} \le 2.7 \, \% $) purity of the deuterium to conclude that absorption and up-scattering at $5\,$K have a negligible effect on the UCN yield from the thin films. We compared the calculated UCN yield based on the previously measured thermal neutron flux from the heavy water thermal moderator with measurements of the UCN count rates at the beamports. We confirmed our results and thus demonstrate an absolute characterization of the UCN production and transport in the source by simulations.

We present the magnetically shielded room (MSR) for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute which features an interior cubic volume with each side of length 2.92m, thus providing an accessible space of 25m3. The MSR has 87 openings up to 220mm diameter to operate the experimental apparatus inside, and an intermediate space between the layers for sensitive signal processing electronics. The characterization measurements show a remanent magnetic field in the central 1m3 below 100pT, and a field below 600pT in the entire inner volume, up to 4\,cm to the walls. The quasi-static shielding factor at 0.01\,Hz measured with a sinusoidal 2muT peak-to-peak signal is about 100,000 in all three spatial directions and rises fast with frequency to reach 10^8 above 1Hz., Comment: 10 pages, 15 Figures, submitted to Review of Scientific Instruments

The presence of a permanent electric dipole moment in an elementary particle implies Charge-Parity symmetry violation and thus could help explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry observed in our universe. Within the context of the Standard Model, the electric dipole moment of elementary particles is extremely small. However, many Standard Model extensions such as supersymmetry predict large electric dipole moments. Recently, the muon electric dipole moment has become a topic of particular interest due to the tensions in the magnetic anomaly of the muon and the electron, and hints of lepton-flavor universality violation in B-meson decays. In this article, we discuss a dedicated effort at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland to search for the muon electric dipole moment using a 3-T compact solenoid storage ring and the frozen-spin technique. This technique could reach a sensitivity of $6\times10^{-23}$ $e\cdot$cm after a year of data taking with the $p=125$ MeV/$c$ muon beam at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The search for a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the muon is an excellent probe for physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. We propose the first dedicated muon EDM search employing the frozen-spin technique at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland, with a sensitivity of $6 \times 10^{-23}~e\!\cdot\!\mathrm{cm}$, improving the current best limit set by the E821 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory by more than three orders of magnitude. In preparation for a high precision experiment to measure the muon EDM, several R&D studies have been performed at PSI: the characterisation of a possible beamline to host the experiment for the muon beam injection study and the measurement of the multiple Coulomb scattering of positrons in potential detector materials at low momenta for the positron tracking scheme development. The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic $ep$ scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. A perturbative QCD fit, simultaneously of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ and and the PDFs, was performed with the result $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1156 \pm 0.0011~{\rm (exp)}~ ^{+0.0001}_{-0.0002}~ {\rm (model}$ ${\rm +~parameterisation)}~ \pm 0.0029~{\rm (scale)}$. The PDF sets of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO were determined with separate fits using two fixed values of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$, $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)=0.1155$ and $0.118$, since the latter value was already chosen for the published HERAPDF2.0 NNLO analysis based on HERA inclusive DIS data only. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. While the international nEDM collaboration at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) took data in 2017 that covered a considerable fraction of the parameter space of claimed potential signals of hypothetical neutron ($n$) to mirror-neutron ($n'$) transitions, it could not test all claimed signal regions at various mirror magnetic fields. Therefore, a new study of $n-n'$ oscillations using stored ultracold neutrons (UCNs)is underway at PSI, considerably expanding the reach in parameter space of mirror magnetic fields ($B'$) and oscillation time constants ($\tau_{nn'}$). The new apparatus is designed to test for the anomalous loss of stored ultracold neutrons as a function of an applied magnetic field. The experiment is distinguished from its predecessors by its very large storage vessel (1.47\,m$^3$), enhancing its statistical sensitivity. In a test experiment in 2020 we have demonstrated the capabilities of our apparatus. However, the full analysis of our recent data is still pending. Based on already demonstrated performance, we will reach a sensitivity to oscillation times $\tau_{nn'}/\sqrt{\cos(\beta)}$ well above hundred seconds, with $\beta$ being the angle between $B'$ and the applied magnetic field $B$. The scan of $B$ will allow the finding or the comprehensive exclusion of potential signals reported in the analysis of previous experiments and suggested to be consistent with neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations.

Efficient neutron transport is a key ingredient to the performance of ultracold neutron (UCN) sources, important to meeting the challenges placed by high precision fundamental physics experiments. At the Paul Scherrer Institute's UCN source we have been continuously improving our understanding of the UCN source parameters by performing a series of studies to characterize neutron production and moderation, and UCN production, extraction, and transport efficiency to the beamport. The present study on the absolute UCN transport efficiency completes our previous publications. We report on complementary measurements, namely one on the height-dependent UCN density and a second on the transmission of a calibrated quantity of UCN over a ~16 m long UCN guide section connecting one beamport via the source storage vessel to another beamport. The first measurement of lepton-jet momentum imbalance and azimuthal correlation in lepton-proton scattering at high momentum transfer is presented. These data, taken with the H1 detector at HERA, are corrected for detector effects using an unbinned machine learning algorithm OmniFold, which considers eight observables simultaneously in this first application. The unfolded cross sections are compared to calculations performed within the context of collinear or transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) as well as Monte Carlo event generators. In this paper, we examine dynamic properties of particle flows for a recently derived parameterized family of stochastic particle flow filters for nonlinear filtering and Bayesian inference. In particular, we establish that particles maintain desired posterior distribution without the Gaussian assumption on measurement likelihood. Adopting the concept of Lyapunov stability, we further show that particles stay close but do not converge to the maximum likelihood estimate of the posterior distribution. The linear convex log-homotopy has been used in the derivation of particle flow filters. One natural question is whether it is beneficial to consider other forms of homotopy. We revisit this question by considering a general linear form of log-homotopy for which we derive particle flow filters, validate the distribution of flows, and obtain conditions for the stability of particle flows. We then formulate the problem of stiffness mitigation as an optimal control problem by minimizing the condition number of the Hessian matrix of the posterior density function. The optimal homotopy can be efficiently obtained by solving a one-dimensional second order two-point boundary value problem. Compared with traditional matrix analysis based approaches to condition number improvements such as scaling, this novel approach explicitly exploits the special structure of the stochastic differential equations in particle flow filters. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by a numerical example.

We design, implement, and evaluate DeepEverest, a system for the efficient execution of interpretation by example queries over the activation values of a deep neural network. DeepEverest consists of an efficient indexing technique and a query execution algorithm with various optimizations. We prove that the proposed query execution algorithm is instance optimal. We present a new video storage system (VSS) designed to decouple high-level video operations from the low-level details required to store and efficiently retrieve video data. VSS is designed to be the storage subsystem of a video data management system (VDBMS) and is responsible for: (1) transparently and automatically arranging the data on disk in an efficient, granular format; (2) caching frequently-retrieved regions in the most useful formats; and (3) eliminating redundancies found in videos captured from multiple cameras with overlapping fields of view. Our results suggest that VSS can improve VDBMS read performance by up to 54%, reduce storage costs by up to 45%, and enable developers to focus on application logic rather than video storage and retrieval.

In this paper, we are interested in obtaining answers to the following questions for particle flow filters: Can we provide a theoretical guarantee that particle flow filters give correct results such as unbiased estimates? Are particle flows stable and under what conditions? Can we have one particle flow filter, rather than multiple seemingly different ones? To answer these questions, we first derive a parameterized family of stochastic particle flow filters, in which particle flows are driven by a linear combination of prior knowledge and measurement likelihood information. We then show that several particle flows existing in the literature are special cases of this family. We prove that the particle flows are unbiased under the assumption of linear measurement and Gaussian distributions, and that estimates constructed from the stochastic flows are consistent. We further establish several finite time stability concepts for this new family of stochastic particle flows. The results reported in this paper represent a significant development toward establishing a theoretical foundation for particle flow filters.

Experiments dedicated to the measurement of the electric dipole moment of the neutron require outstanding control of the magnetic field uniformity. The neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute uses a 199Hg co-magnetometer to precisely monitor magnetic field variations. This co-magnetometer, in the presence of field non-uniformity, is responsible for the largest systematic effect of this measurement. To evaluate and correct that effect, offline measurements of the field non-uniformity were performed during mapping campaigns in 2013, 2014 and 2017. We present the results of these campaigns, and the improvement the correction of this effect brings to the neutron electric dipole moment measurement.

This letter of intent proposes an experiment to search for an electric dipole moment of the muon based on the frozen-spin technique. We intend to exploit the high electric field, $E=1{\rm GV/m}$, experienced in the rest frame of the muon with a momentum of $p=125 {\rm MeV/}c$ when passing through a large magnetic field of $|\vec{B}|=3{\rm T}$. Current muon fluxes at the $\mu$E1 beam line permit an improved search with a sensitivity of $\sigma(d_\mu)\leq 6\times10^{-23}e{\rm cm}$, about three orders of magnitude more sensitivity than for the current upper limit of $|d_\mu|\leq1.8\times10^{-19}e{\rm cm}$\,(C.L. 95\%). With the advent of the new high intensity muon beam, HIMB, and the cold muon source, muCool, at PSI the sensitivity of the search could be further improved by tailoring a re-acceleration scheme to match the experiments injection phase space. Magnetic Johnson-Nyquist noise (JNN) originating from metal electrodes, used to create a static electric field in neutron electric-dipole-moment (nEDM) experiments, may limit the sensitivity of measurements. We present here the first dedicated study on JNN applied to a large-scale long-measurement-time experiment with the implementation of a co-magnetometry. In this study, we derive surface- and volume-averaged root-mean-square normal noise amplitudes at a certain frequency bandwidth for a cylindrical geometry. In addition, we model the source of noise as a finite number of current dipoles and demonstrate a method to simulate temporal and three-dimensional spatial dependencies of JNN. The calculations are applied to estimate the impact of JNN on measurements with the new apparatus, n2EDM, at the Paul Scherrer Institute. We demonstrate that the performances of the optically pumped $^{133}$Cs magnetometers and $^{199}$Hg co-magnetometers, which will be used in the apparatus, are not limited by JNN. Further, we find that in measurements deploying a co-magnetometer system, the impact of JNN is negligible for nEDM searches down to a sensitivity of $4\,\times\,10^{-28}\,e\cdot{\rm cm}$ in a single measurement; therefore, the use of economically and mechanically favored solid aluminum electrodes is possible.

We present the design of a next-generation experiment, n2EDM, currently under construction at the ultracold neutron source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) with the aim of carrying out a high-precision search for an electric dipole moment of the neutron. The project builds on experience gained with the previous apparatus operated at PSI until 2017, and is expected to deliver an order of magnitude better sensitivity with provision for further substantial improvements. An overview is given of the experimental method and setup, the sensitivity requirements for the apparatus are derived, and its technical design is described.

The transverse-field Ising model on the triangular lattice is expected to host an intermediate finite-temperature Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase through a mapping of the spins on each triangular unit to a complex order parameter. TmMgGaO$_4$ is a candidate material to realize such physics due to the non-Kramers nature of Tm$^{3+}$ ion and the resulting two-singlet single-ion ground state. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we confirm this picture by determining the leading parameters of the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of TmMgGaO$_4$. Subsequently, we track the predicted KT phase and related transitions by inspecting the field and temperature dependence of the ac susceptibility. We further probe the spin correlations in both reciprocal space and real space via single crystal neutron diffraction and magnetic total scattering techniques, respectively. Magnetic pair distribution function analysis provides evidence for the formation of vortex-antivortex pairs that characterize the proposed KT phase around 5~K. Although structural disorder influences the field-induced behavior of TmMgGaO$_4$, the magnetism in zero field appears relatively free from these effects. These results position TmMgGaO$_4$ as a strong candidate for a solid-state realization of KT physics in a dense spin system.

Thermomagnetic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Na2PrO3 are reported. This material is an antiferromagnetic honeycomb magnet based on the tetravalent lanthanide Pr4+ and has been proposed to host dominant antiferromagnetic Kitaev interactions. These measurements reveal magnetic fluctuations in Na2PrO3 below an energy of 2 meV as well as crystal-field excitations around 230 meV. The latter energy is comparable to the scale of the spin-orbit interaction and explains both the very small effective moment of around 1.0 {\mu}B per Pr4+ and the difficulty to uncover any static magnetic scattering below the ordering transition at TN = 4.6 K. By comparing the low-energy magnetic excitations in Na2PrO3 to that of the isostructural spin-only compound, Na2TbO3, a microscopic model of exchange interactions is developed that implicates dominant and surprisingly large Heisenberg exchange interactions J approximately equal to 1.1(1) meV. Although antiferromagnetic Kitaev interactions with K less than or equal to 0.2J cannot be excluded, the inelastic neutron scattering data of Na2PrO3 is best explained with a delta = 1.24(2) easy-axis XXZ exchange anisotropy., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; Supplementary Information available on request

It has been proposed that there could be a mirror copy of the standard model particles, restoring the parity symmetry in the weak interaction on the global level. Oscillations between a neutral standard model particle, such as the neutron, and its mirror counterpart could potentially answer various standing issues in physics today. Astrophysical studies and terrestrial experiments led by ultracold neutron storage measurements have investigated neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations and imposed constraints on the theoretical parameters. Recently, further analysis of these ultracold neutron storage experiments has yielded statistically significant anomalous signals that may be interpreted as neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations, assuming nonzero mirror magnetic fields. The neutron electric dipole moment collaboration performed a dedicated search at the Paul Scherrer Institute and found no evidence of neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations. Thereby, the following new lower limits on the oscillation time were obtained: $\tau_{nn'} > 352~$s at $B'=0$ (95% C.L.), $\tau_{nn'} > 6~\text{s}$ for all $0.4~\mu\text{T}9~\text{s}$ for all $5.0~\mu\text{T}

The localized f-electrons enrich the magnetic properties in rare-earth-based intermetallics. Among those, compounds with heavier 4d and 5d transition metals are even more fascinating because anomalous electronic properties may be induced by the hybridization of 4f and itinerant conduction electrons primarily from the d orbitals. Here, we describe the observation of trivalent Yb3+ with S = 1/2 at low temperatures in YbxPt5P, the first of a new family of materials. YbxPt5P (0.20< x <1) phases were synthesized and structurally characterized. They exhibit a large homogeneity width with the Yb ratio exclusively occupying the 1a site in the anti-CeCoIn5 structure. Moreover, the resistivity measurement of a sample analyzed as Yb0.25Pt5P shows it to exist a complete zero-resistance transition with a critical transition temperature of ~0.6 K, possible superconductivity. However, the zero-resistivity transition was not observed in YbPt5P with antiferromagnetic ordering existing solely. First-principles electronic structure calculations substantiate the antiferromagnetic ground state and indicate that 2D nesting around the Fermi level may give rise to exotic physical properties, such as superconductivity. Modern video data management systems store videos as a single encoded file, which significantly limits possible storage level optimizations. We design, implement, and evaluate TASM, a new tile-based storage manager for video data. TASM uses a feature in modern video codecs called "tiles" that enables spatial random access into encoded videos. TASM physically tunes stored videos by optimizing their tile layouts given the video content and a query workload. Additionally, TASM dynamically tunes that layout in response to changes in the query workload or if the query workload and video contents are incrementally discovered. Finally, TASM also produces efficient initial tile layouts for newly ingested videos. We demonstrate that TASM can speed up subframe selection queries by an average of over 50% and up to 94%. TASM can also improve the throughput of the full scan phase of object detection queries by up to 2X.

Rare earth triangular lattice materials have been proposed as a good platform for the investigation of frustrated magnetic ground states. KErSe$_2$ with the delafossite structure, contains perfect two-dimensional Er$^{3+}$ triangular layers separated by potassium ions, realizing this ideal configuration and inviting study. Here we investigate the magnetism of KErSe$_2$ at miliKelvin temperatures by heat capacity and neutron powder diffraction. Heat capacity results reveal a magnetic transition at 0.2 K in zero applied field. This long-range order is suppressed by an applied magnetic field of 0.5 T below 0.08 K. Neutron powder diffraction suggests that the zero-field magnetic structure orders with $k=(\frac{1}{2},0,\frac{1}{2})$ in a stripe spin structure. Unexpectedly, Er is found to have a reduced moment of 3.06(1) $\mu_B$/Er in the ordered state and diffuse magnetic scattering, which originates at higher temperatures, is found to persist in the ordered state potentially indicating magnetic fluctuations. Neutron diffraction collected under an applied field shows a metamagnetic transition at $\sim$ 0.5 T to ferromagnetic order with $k$=(0,0,0) and two possible structures, which are likely dependent on the applied field direction. First principle calculations show that the zero field stripe spin structure can be explained by the first, second and third neighbor couplings in the antiferromagnetic triangular lattice., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Grain boundary self-diffusion of $^{57}$Co, $^{51}$Cr, $^{59}$Fe and $^{54}$Mn in a coarse-grained, single-phase fcc CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy is measured in a wide temperature range of 643 to 1273~K in both C- and B-type kinetic regimes after Harrison's classification. The results suggest that the product of the pertinent segregation factors, $s$, and the grain boundary width, $\delta$, is about 0.5~nm for all elements at temperatures $T>800$~K. Whereas one short-circuit contribution is observed at higher temperatures above 800~K, the penetration profiles in the C-type kinetic regime (643 -- 703~K) reveal two distinct contributions that hint towards a phase decomposition at a fraction of high-angle grain boundaries at these temperatures. A correlative microscopy combining transmission Kikuchi diffraction and atom probe tomography manifests formation of neighbouring Ni-Mn-rich and Cr-rich precipitates at a segment of high angle grain boundaries. Transmission electron microscopy revealed an increased dislocation density in the vicinity of such interfaces which is suggested to be a reason of the enhanced diffusion rates at low temperatures for such short circuits., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

We present the result of an experiment to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute using Ramsey's method of separated oscillating magnetic fields with ultracold neutrons (UCN). Our measurement stands in the long history of EDM experiments probing physics violating time reversal invariance. The salient features of this experiment were the use of a Hg-199 co-magnetometer and an array of optically pumped cesium vapor magnetometers to cancel and correct for magnetic field changes. The statistical analysis was performed on blinded datasets by two separate groups while the estimation of systematic effects profited from an unprecedented knowledge of the magnetic field. The measured value of the neutron EDM is $d_{\rm n} = (0.0\pm1.1_{\rm stat}\pm0.2_{\rm sys})\times10^{-26}e\,{\rm cm}$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL on 18.12.2019
