Recent advancements in massively multilingual machine translation systems have significantly enhanced translation accuracy; however, even the best performing systems still generate hallucinations, severely impacting user trust. Detecting hallucinations in Machine Translation (MT) remains a critical challenge, particularly since existing methods excel with High-Resource Languages (HRLs) but exhibit substantial limitations when applied to Low-Resource Languages (LRLs). This paper evaluates sentence-level hallucination detection approaches using Large Language Models (LLMs) and semantic similarity within massively multilingual embeddings. Our study spans 16 language directions, covering HRLs, LRLs, with diverse scripts. We find that the choice of model is essential for performance. On average, for HRLs, Llama3-70B outperforms the previous state of the art by as much as 0.16 MCC (Matthews Correlation Coefficient). However, for LRLs we observe that Claude Sonnet outperforms other LLMs on average by 0.03 MCC. The key takeaway from our study is that LLMs can achieve performance comparable or even better than previously proposed models, despite not being explicitly trained for any machine translation task. Accurate measurement of inertial quantities is essential in geophysics, geodesy, fundamental physics and navigation. For instance, inertial navigation systems require stable inertial sensors to compute the position and attitude of the carrier. Here, we present an architecture for a compact cold-atom accelerometer-gyroscope based on a magnetically launched atom interferometer. Characterizing the launching technique, we demonstrate 700 ppm gyroscope scale factor stability over one day, while acceleration and rotation rate bias stabilities of $7 \times 10^{-7}$ m/s$^2$ and $4 \times 10^{-7}$ rad/s are reached after two days of integration of the cold-atom sensor. Hybridizing it with a classical accelerometer and gyroscope, we correct their drift and bias to achieve respective 100-fold and 3-fold increase on the stability of the hybridized sensor compared to the classical ones. Compared to state-of-the-art atomic gyroscope, the simplicity and scalability of our launching technique make this architecture easily extendable to a compact full six-axis inertial measurement unit, providing a pathway towards autonomous positioning and orientation using cold-atom sensors.

In this paper, we address common error sources for 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) including blur, imperfect camera poses, and color inconsistencies, with the goal of improving its robustness for practical applications like reconstructions from handheld phone captures. Our main contribution involves modeling motion blur as a Gaussian distribution over camera poses, allowing us to address both camera pose refinement and motion blur correction in a unified way. Additionally, we propose mechanisms for defocus blur compensation and for addressing color in-consistencies caused by ambient light, shadows, or due to camera-related factors like varying white balancing settings. Our proposed solutions integrate in a seamless way with the 3DGS formulation while maintaining its benefits in terms of training efficiency and rendering speed. We experimentally validate our contributions on relevant benchmark datasets including Scannet++ and Deblur-NeRF, obtaining state-of-the-art results and thus consistent improvements over relevant baselines.

This article gives a new proof of the Gross--Kohnen--Zagier theorem for Shimura curves which exploits the $p$-adic uniformization of Cerednik--Drinfeld. The explicit description of CM points via this uniformization leads to an expression relating the Gross--Kohnen--Zagier generating series to the ordinary projection of the first derivative, with respect to a weight variable, of a $p$-adic family of positive definite ternary theta series.

A $p$-arithmetic subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Q})$ like the Ihara group $\Gamma := \mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/p])$ acts by M\"obius transformations on the Poincar\'e upper half plane $\mathcal{H}$ and on Drinfeld's $p$-adic upper half plane $\mathcal{H}_p := \mathbb{P}_1(\mathbb{C}_p)\setminus\mathbb{P}_1(\mathbb{Q}_p)$. The diagonal action of $\Gamma$ on the product is discrete, and the quotient $\Gamma\backslash(\mathcal{H}_p\times \mathcal{H})$ can be envisaged as a "mock Hilbert modular surface". According to a striking prediction of Nekov\'a$\check{\text{r}}$ and Scholl, the CM points on genuine Hilbert modular surfaces should give rise to "plectic Heegner points" that encode non-trivial regulators attached, notably, to elliptic curves of rank two over real quadratic fields. This article develops the analogy between Hilbert modular surfaces and their mock counterparts, with the aim of transposing the plectic philosophy to the mock Hilbert setting, where the analogous plectic invariants are expected to lie in the alternating square of the Mordell-Weil group of certain elliptic curves of rank two over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Rigid meromorphic cocycles are defined in the setting of orthogonal groups of arbitrary real signature and constructed in some instances via a $p$-adic analogue of Borcherds' singular theta lift. The values of rigid meromorphic cocycles at special points of an associated $p$-adic symmetric space are then conjectured to belong to class fields of suitable global reflex fields, suggesting an eventual framework for explicit class field theory beyond the setting of CM fields explored in the treatise of Shimura and Taniyama., Comment: 67 pages

We use an agnostic information-theoretic approach to investigate the statistical properties of natural images. We introduce the Multiscale Relevance (MSR) measure to assess the robustness of images to compression at all scales. Starting in a controlled environment, we characterize the MSR of synthetic random textures as function of image roughness H and other relevant parameters. We then extend the analysis to natural images and find striking similarities with critical (H = 0) random textures. We show that the MSR is more robust and informative of image content than classical methods such as power spectrum analysis. Finally, we confront the MSR to classical measures for the calibration of common procedures such as color mapping and denoising. Overall, the MSR approach appears to be a good candidate for advanced image analysis and image processing, while providing a good level of physical interpretability., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

This note provides the construction of a three-variable family of cohomology classes arising from diagonal cycles on a triple product of towers of modular curves, and proves a reciprocity law relating it to the three variable triple-product $p$-adic $L$-function associated to a triple of Hida families by means of Perrin-Riou's $\Lambda$-adic regulator.

Stark-Heegner points are conjectural substitutes for Heegner points when the imaginary quadratic field of the theory of complex multiplication is replaced by a real quadratic field $K$. They are constructed analytically as local points on elliptic curves with multiplicative reduction at a prime $p$ that remains inert in $K$, but are conjectured to be rational over ring class fields of $K$ and to satisfy a Shimura reciprocity law describing the action of $G_K$ on them. The main conjectures of \cite{darmon-hpxh} predict that any linear combination of Stark-Heegner points weighted by the values of a ring class character $\psi$ of $K$ should belong to the corresponding piece of the Mordell-Weil group over the associated ring class field, and should be non-trivial when $L'(E/K,\psi,1) \ne 0$. Building on the results on families of diagonal classes described in the remaining contributions to this volume, this note explains how such linear combinations arise from global classes in the idoneous pro-$p$ Selmer group, and are non-trivial when the first derivative of a weight-variable $p$-adic $L$-function associated to the Hida family passing through $f$ does not vanish at the point associated to $(E/K,\psi)$.

We study the action of the derived Hecke algebra in the setting of dihedral weight one forms, and prove a conjecture of the second- and fourth- named authors relating this action to certain Stark units associated to the symmetric square L-function. The proof exploits the theta correspondence between various Hecke modules as well as ideas of Merel and Lecouturier on higher Eisenstein elements.

Today with Big Data and data lakes, we are faced of a mass of data that is very difficult to manage it manually. The protection of personal data in this context requires an automatic analysis for data discovery. Storing the names of attributes already analyzed in a knowledge base could optimize this automatic discovery. To have a better knowledge base, we should not store any attributes whose name does not make sense. In this article, to check if the name of an attribute has a meaning, we propose a solution that calculate the distances between this name and the words in a dictionary. Our studies on the distance functions like N-Gram, Jaro-Winkler and Levenshtein show limits to set an acceptance threshold for an attribute in the knowledge base. In order to overcome these limitations, our solution aims to strengthen the score calculation by using an exponential function based on the longest sequence. We address the problem of image color quantization using a Maximum Entropy based approach. Focusing on pixel mapping we argue that adding thermal noise to the system yields better visual impressions than that obtained from a simple energy minimization. To quantify this observation, we introduce the coarse-grained quantization error, and seek the optimal temperature which minimizes this new observable. By comparing images with different structural properties, we show that the optimal temperature is a good proxy for complexity at different scales. Noting that the convoluted error is a key observable, we directly minimize it using a Monte Carlo algorithm to generate a new series of quantized images. Adopting an original approach based on the informativity of finite size samples, we are able to determine the optimal convolution parameter leading to the best visuals. Neural implicit surfaces have become an important technique for multi-view 3D reconstruction but their accuracy remains limited. In this paper, we argue that this comes from the difficulty to learn and render high frequency textures with neural networks. We thus propose to add to the standard neural rendering optimization a direct photo-consistency term across the different views. Intuitively, we optimize the implicit geometry so that it warps views on each other in a consistent way. We demonstrate that two elements are key to the success of such an approach: (i) warping entire patches, using the predicted occupancy and normals of the 3D points along each ray, and measuring their similarity with a robust structural similarity (SSIM); (ii) handling visibility and occlusion in such a way that incorrect warps are not given too much importance while encouraging a reconstruction as complete as possible. We evaluate our approach, dubbed NeuralWarp, on the standard DTU and EPFL benchmarks and show it outperforms state of the art unsupervised implicit surfaces reconstructions by over 20% on both datasets., Comment: Accepted at CVPR2022. Deep multi-view stereo (MVS) methods have been developed and extensively compared on simple datasets, where they now outperform classical approaches. In this paper, we ask whether the conclusions reached in controlled scenarios are still valid when working with Internet photo collections. We propose a methodology for evaluation and explore the influence of three aspects of deep MVS methods: network architecture, training data, and supervision. We make several key observations, which we extensively validate quantitatively and qualitatively, both for depth prediction and complete 3D reconstructions. First, complex unsupervised approaches cannot train on data in the wild. Our new approach makes it possible with three key elements: upsampling the output, softmin based aggregation and a single reconstruction loss. Second, supervised deep depthmap-based MVS methods are state-of-the art for reconstruction of few internet images. Finally, our evaluation provides very different results than usual ones. The values of the so-called {\em Dedekind--Rademacher cocycle} at certain real quadratic arguments are shown to be global $p$-units in the narrow Hilbert class field of the associated real quadratic field, as predicted by conjectures of Darmon, Dasgupta, and Vonk. The strategy for proving this result combines an approach of Darmon-Pozzi-Vonk with one crucial extra ingredient: the study of infinitesimal deformations of irregular Hilbert Eisenstein series of weight one in the anti-parallel direction, building on the techniques in earlier work of Betina, Dimitrov, and Pozzi.

We tackle the problem of finding accurate and robust keypoint correspondences between images. We propose a learning-based approach to guide local feature matches via a learned approximate image matching. Our approach can boost the results of SIFT to a level similar to state-of-the-art deep descriptors, such as Superpoint, ContextDesc, or D2-Net and can improve performance for these descriptors. We introduce and study different levels of supervision to learn coarse correspondences. In particular, we show that weak supervision from epipolar geometry leads to performances higher than the stronger but more biased point level supervision and is a clear improvement over weak image level supervision. We demonstrate the benefits of our approach in a variety of conditions by evaluating our guided keypoint correspondences for localization of internet images on the YFCC100M dataset and indoor images on theSUN3D dataset, for robust localization on the Aachen day-night benchmark and for 3D reconstruction in challenging conditions using the LTLL historical image data., Comment: Accepted to 3DV 2020

This paper considers the generic problem of dense alignment between two images, whether they be two frames of a video, two widely different views of a scene, two paintings depicting similar content, etc. Whereas each such task is typically addressed with a domain-specific solution, we show that a simple unsupervised approach performs surprisingly well across a range of tasks. Our main insight is that parametric and non-parametric alignment methods have complementary strengths. We propose a two-stage process: first, a feature-based parametric coarse alignment using one or more homographies, followed by non-parametric fine pixel-wise alignment. Coarse alignment is performed using RANSAC on off-the-shelf deep features. Fine alignment is learned in an unsupervised way by a deep network which optimizes a standard structural similarity metric (SSIM) between the two images, plus cycle-consistency. Despite its simplicity, our method shows competitive results on a range of tasks and datasets, including unsupervised optical flow on KITTI, dense correspondences on Hpatches, two-view geometry estimation on YFCC100M, localization on Aachen Day-Night, and, for the first time, fine alignment of artworks on the Brughel dataset. We revisit the long-standing question of the relation between image appreciation and its statistical properties. We generate two different sets of random images well distributed along three measures of entropic complexity. We run a large-scale survey in which people are asked to sort the images by preference, which reveals maximum appreciation at intermediate entropic complexity. We show that the algorithmic complexity of the coarse-grained images, expected to capture structural complexity while abstracting from high frequency noise, is a good predictor of preferences. With the increasing abundance of 'digital footprints' left by human interactions in online environments, e.g., social media and app use, the ability to model complex human behavior has become increasingly possible. Many approaches have been proposed, however, most previous model frameworks are fairly restrictive. We introduce a new social modeling approach that enables the creation of models directly from data with minimal a priori restrictions on the model class. In particular, we infer the minimally complex, maximally predictive representation of an individual's behavior when viewed in isolation and as driven by a social input. We then apply this framework to a heterogeneous catalog of human behavior collected from fifteen thousand users on the microblogging platform Twitter. The models allow us to describe how a user processes their past behavior and their social inputs. Despite the diversity of observed user behavior, most models inferred fall into a small subclass of all possible finite-state processes. Thus, our work demonstrates that user behavior, while quite complex, belies simple underlying computational structures.

Whether enjoying the lucid prose of a favorite author or slogging through some other writer's cumbersome, heavy-set prattle (full of parentheses, em dashes, compound adjectives, and Oxford commas), readers will notice stylistic signatures not only in word choice and grammar, but also in punctuation itself. Indeed, visual sequences of punctuation from different authors produce marvelously different (and visually striking) sequences. Punctuation is a largely overlooked stylistic feature in "stylometry", the quantitative analysis of written text. In this paper, we examine punctuation sequences in a corpus of literary documents and ask the following questions: Are the properties of such sequences a distinctive feature of different authors? Is it possible to distinguish literary genres based on their punctuation sequences? Do the punctuation styles of authors evolve over time? Chirality, ubiquitous in complex biological systems, can be controlled and quantified in synthetic materials such as cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) systems. In this work, we study spherical shells of CLC under weak anchoring conditions. We induce anchoring transitions at the inner and outer boundaries using two independent methods: by changing the surfactant concentration or by raising the temperature close to the clearing point. The shell confinement leads to new states and associated surface structures: a state where large stripes on the shell can be filled with smaller, perpendicular sub-stripes, and a focal conic domain (FCD) state, where thin stripes wrap into at least two, topologically required, double spirals. Focusing on the latter state, we use a Landau-de Gennes model of the CLC to simulate its detailed configurations as a function of anchoring strength. By abruptly changing the topological constraints on the shell, we are able to study the interconversion between director defects and pitch defects, a phenomenon usually restricted by the complexity of the cholesteric phase. We present a novel, self-consistent and robust theoretical model to investigate elastic interactions between topological defects in liquid crystal shells. Accounting for the non-concentric nature of the shell in a simple manner, we are able to successfully and accurately explain and predict the positions of the defects, most relevant in the context of colloidal self-assembly. We calibrate and test our model on existing experimental data, and extend it to all newly observed defects configurations in chiral nematic shells. We perform new experiments to check further and confirm the validity of the present model. Moreover, we are able to obtain quantitative estimates of the energies of $+1$ or $+3/2$ disclination lines in cholesterics, whose intricate nature was only reported recently., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We investigate experimentally and numerically the defect configurations emerging when a cholesteric liquid crystal is confined to a spherical shell. We uncover a rich scenario of defect configurations, some of them non-existent in nematic shells, where new types of defects are stabilized by the helical ordering of the liquid crystal. In contrast to nematic shells, here defects are not simple singular points or lines, but have a large structured core. Specifically, we observe five different types of cholesteric shells. We study the statistical distribution of the different types of shells as a function of the two relevant geometrical dimensionless parameters of the system. By playing with these parameters, we are able to induce transitions between different types of shells. These transitions involve interesting topological transformations in which the defects recombine to form new structures. We introduce a method for quantifying the inherent unpredictability of a continuous-valued time series via an extension of the differential Shannon entropy rate. Our extension, the specific entropy rate, quantifies the amount of predictive uncertainty associated with a specific state, rather than averaged over all states. We relate the specific entropy rate to popular `complexity' measures such as Approximate and Sample Entropies. We provide a data-driven approach for estimating the specific entropy rate of an observed time series. Finally, we consider three case studies of estimating specific entropy rate from synthetic and physiological data relevant to the analysis of heart rate variability.

We study cholesteric order in liquid crystal shells with planar degenerate anchoring. We observe that the bipolar and radial configurations intensively reported for bulk droplets have a higher degree of complexity when the liquid crystal is confined to a spherical shell. The bipolar configuration is replaced by a structure where the boojums are linked to a stack of disclination rings that spans the shell, while the radial configuration exhibits a double helix structure where two disclinations wind around each other. Our results confirm recent numerical simulations and highlight the complexity of the defect structures arising when cholesteric liquid crystals are confined to spherical geometries. We also show that the position of the boojums is only ruled by the shell geometry, independently of the cholesteric pitch. To understand quantitatively this behavior, we develop a simple yet insightful theoretical framework which captures the essence of the observed phenomenology. We also show that the transition between the two configurations is solely governed by the confinement ratio c = h/p, where h is the average shell thickness and p is the cholesteric pitch. Finally, we perform a dynamical study of this transition, and report a fascinating defect waltz due to a chemical Lehmann effect.

We present a theoretical study of the energetics of thin nematic shells with two charge one-half defects and one charge-one defect. We determine the optimal arrangement: the defects are located on a great circle at the vertices of an isosceles triangle with angles of 66 degrees at the charge one-half defects and a distinct angle of 48 degrees, consistent with experimental findings. We also analyse thermal fluctuations around this ground state and estimate the energy as a function of thickness. We find that the energy of the three-defect shell is close to the energy of other known configurations having two charge-one and four charge one-half defects. This finding, together with the large energy barriers separating one configuration from the others, explains their observation in experiments as well as their long-time stability., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We describe a conjectural construction (in the spirit of Hilbert's 12th problem) of units in abelian extensions of certain base fields which are neither totally real nor CM. These base fields are quadratic extensions with exactly one complex place of a totally real number field F, and are referred to as Almost Totally real (ATR) extensions. Our construction involves certain null-homologous topological cycles on the Hilbert modular variety attached to F. The special units are the images of these cycles under a map defined by integration of weight two Eisenstein series on GL_2(F). This map is formally analogous to the higher Abel-Jacobi maps that arise in the theory of algebraic cycles. We show that our conjecture is compatible with Stark's conjecture for ATR extensions; it is, however, a genuine strengthening of Stark's conjecture in this context since it gives an analytic formula for the arguments of the Stark units and not just for their absolute values. We study the problem of the transformation of a given reactant species into an immiscible product species, as they flow through a chemically active porous medium. We derive the equation governing the evolution of the volume fraction of the species -- in a one-dimensional macroscopic description --, identify the relevant dimensionless numbers, and provide simple models for capillary pressure and relative permeabilities, which are quantities of crucial importance when tackling multiphase flows in porous media. We set the domain of validity of our models and discuss the importance of viscous coupling terms in the extended Darcy's law. We investigate numerically the steady regime and demonstrate that the spatial transformation rate of the species along the reactor is non-monotonous, as testified by the existence of an inflection point in the volume fraction profiles. We obtain the scaling of the location of this inflection point with the dimensionless lengths of the problem. We present a theoretical study of gravity waves generated by an anisotropic moving disturbance. We model the moving object by an elliptical pressure field of given aspect ratio $\mathcal W$. We study the wake pattern as a function of $\mathcal W$ and the longitudinal hull Froude number $Fr = V/\sqrt{gL}$, where $V$ is the velocity, $g$ the acceleration of gravity and $L$ the size of the disturbance in the direction of motion. For large hull Froude numbers, we analytically show that the rescaled surface profiles for which $\sqrt{\mathcal W}/Fr$ is kept constant coincide. In particular, the angle outside which the surface is essentially flat remains constant and equal to the Kelvin angle, and the angle corresponding to the maximum amplitude of the waves scales as $\sqrt{\mathcal W}/Fr$, thus showing that previous work on the wake's angle for isotropic objects can be extended to anisotropic objects of given aspect ratio. We then focus on the wave resistance and discuss its properties in the case of an elliptical Gaussian pressure field. We derive an analytical expression for the wave resistance in the limit of very elongated objects, and show that the position of the speed corresponding to the maximum wave resistance scales as $\sqrt{gL}/\sqrt{\mathcal W}$., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

Community detection in online social networks is typically based on the analysis of the explicit connections between users, such as "friends" on Facebook and "followers" on Twitter. But online users often have hundreds or even thousands of such connections, and many of these connections do not correspond to real friendships or more generally to accounts that users interact with. We claim that community detection in online social networks should be question-oriented and rely on additional information beyond the simple structure of the network. The concept of 'community' is very general, and different questions such as "whom do we interact with?" and "with whom do we share similar interests?" can lead to the discovery of different social groups. In this paper we focus on three types of communities beyond structural communities: activity-based, topic-based, and interaction-based. We analyze a Twitter dataset using three different weightings of the structural network meant to highlight these three community types, and then infer the communities associated with these weightings. We show that the communities obtained in the three weighted cases are highly different from each other, and from the communities obtained by considering only the unweighted structural network. Our results confirm that asking a precise question is an unavoidable first step in community detection in online social networks, and that different questions can lead to different insights about the network under study., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, 1 tables

Gravity waves generated by an object moving at constant speed at the water surface form a specific pattern commonly known as the Kelvin wake. It was proved by Lord Kelvin that such a wake is delimited by a constant angle $\simeq 19.47^\circ$. However a recent study by Rabaud and Moisy based on the observation of airborne images showed that the wake angle seems to decrease as the Froude number $Fr$ increases, scaling as $Fr^{-1}$ for large Froude numbers. To explain such observations the authors make the strong hypothesis that an object of size $b$ cannot generate wavelengths larger than $b$. With no need of such an assumption and modelling the moving object by an axisymmetric pressure field, we analytically show that the angle corresponding to the maximum amplitude of the waves scales as $Fr^{-1}$ for large Froude numbers, whereas the angle delimiting the wake region outside which the surface is essentially flat remains constant and equal to the Kelvin angle for all $Fr$., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

There is a large amount of interest in understanding users of social media in order to predict their behavior in this space. Despite this interest, user predictability in social media is not well-understood. To examine this question, we consider a network of fifteen thousand users on Twitter over a seven week period. We apply two contrasting modeling paradigms: computational mechanics and echo state networks. Both methods attempt to model the behavior of users on the basis of their past behavior. We demonstrate that the behavior of users on Twitter can be well-modeled as processes with self-feedback. We find that the two modeling approaches perform very similarly for most users, but that they differ in performance on a small subset of the users. By exploring the properties of these performance-differentiated users, we highlight the challenges faced in applying predictive models to dynamic social data.

It is believed that any p-adic Galois representation which is potentially semistable arises from a modular form. The main theorem of Wiles establishes this modularity when the representation in question satisfies various technical restrictions, together with the key hypothesis that its reduction modulo p arises itself from a modular form. This article explains how a strong version of Wiles' "lifting theorem" implies the modularity of all hypergeometric abelian varieties - so-called because their periods are expressed in terms of values of classical hypergeometric functions.
