The layered transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TiSe$_2$ is of great research interest, having intriguing properties of charge density waves (CDW) and superconductivity under doping or pressurizing. The monolayer form of 1T-TiSe$_2$ also shows a CDW with a higher transition temperature T_c than the bulk, indicating a stronger CDW interaction. By using the meta-generalized gradient approximation (metaGGA)-based model Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) and many-body perturbation GW+BSE methods, we calculate the exciton binding energies and electron energy loss spectrum (EELS) for the 1T-TiSe$_2$ monolayer under different in-plane biaxial strains. We find that even without strain the 1T-TiSe$_2$ monolayer can have negative exciton energies at the Brillouin zone boundary point M, with a binding energy larger than the gap. The calculated EELS reinforces this picture, indicating EI (exciton insulator) states in 1T-TiSe$_2$ monolayer even without strain. The Wannier-Mott formula calculations of exciton binding energy corroborate results from GW+BSE. Small compressive strains enhance the EI state, and for tensile strains slightly less than 3%, the EI state in this monolayer persists. At large tensile strains, the material makes a transition to a normal semiconductor. Our results provide important information for understanding the quantum nature of this two-dimensional (2D) material. Our results from the standard G0W0@PBE+SOC+U+BSE approach are not qualitatively different from those of a more computationally efficient metaGGA-based SCAN+SOC+U+mBSE+$f_{xc}^{loc}$ approach that employs a model BSE.

Semi-local density functional approximations are widely used. None of them can capture the long-range van der Waals (vdW) attraction between separated subsystems, but they differ remarkably in the extent to which they capture intermediate-range vdW effects responsible for equilibrium bonds between neighboring small closed-shell subsystems. The local density approximation (LDA) often overestimates this effect, while the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized gradient approximation (GGA) underestimates it. The strongly-constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA often estimates it well. All of these semi-local functionals require an additive non-local correction such as the revised Vydrov-Van Voorhis 2010 (rVV10) to capture the long-range part. This work reports adsorption energies and the corresponding geometry of the aromatic thiophene (C$_4$H$_4$S) bound to transition metal surfaces. The adsorption process requires a genuine interplay of covalent and weak binding and requires a simultaneously accurate description of surface and adsorption energies with the correct prediction of the adsorption site. All these quantities must come from well balanced short and long-range correlation effects for a universally applicable method for weak interactions with chemical accuracy.

Computationally-efficient semilocal approximations of density functional theory at the level of the local spin density approximation (LSDA) or generalized gradient approximation (GGA) poorly describe weak interactions. We show improved descriptions for weak bonds (without loss of accuracy for strong ones) from a newly-developed semilocal meta-GGA (MGGA), by applying it to molecules, surfaces, and solids. Semilocal density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy are needed for large electronic systems. The Tao-Perdew-Staroverov-Scuseria (TPSS) meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) is semilocal and usefully accurate, but predicts too-long lattice constants. Recent "GGA's for solids" yield good lattice constants but poor atomization energies of molecules. We show that the construction principle for one of them (restoring the density gradient expansion for exchange over a wide range of densities) can be used to construct a "revised TPSS" meta-GGA with accurate lattice constants, surface energies, and atomization energies for ordinary matter., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We assess the performance of recent density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy of a nonmolecular solid, by applying accurate calculations with the GAUSSIAN, BAND, and VASP codes to a test set of 24 solid metals and non-metals. The functionals tested are the modified Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof generalized gradient approximation (PBEsol GGA), the second-order GGA (SOGGA), and the Armiento-Mattsson 2005 (AM05) GGA. For completeness, we also test more-standard functionals: the local density approximation, the original PBE GGA, and the Tao-Perdew-Staroverov-Scuseria (TPSS) meta-GGA. We find that the recent density functionals for solids reach a high accuracy for bulk properties (lattice constant and bulk modulus). For the cohesive energy, PBE is better than PBEsol overall, as expected, but PBEsol is actually better for the alkali metals and alkali halides. For fair comparison of calculated and experimental results, we consider the zero-point phonon and finite-temperature effects ignored by many workers. We show how Gaussian basis sets and inaccurate experimental reference data may affect the rating of the quality of the functionals. The results show that PBEsol and AM05 perform somewhat differently from each other for alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and alkali halide crystals (where the maximum value of the reduced density gradient is about 2), but perform very similarly for most of the other solids (where it is often about 1). While the exact total energy of a separated open system varies linearly as a function of average electron number between adjacent integers, the energy predicted by semi-local density functional approximations curves upward and the exact-exchange-only or Hartree-Fock energy downward. As a result, semi-local density functionals fail for separated open systems of fluctuating electron number, as in stretched molecular ions A$_2^{+}$ and in solid transition metal oxides.
