We prove the existence and uniqueness of global smooth solutions of the critical dissipative SQG equation in bounded domains in $\mathbb R^2$. This solves an open problem. We introduce a new methodology of transforming the single nonlocal nonlinear evolution equation in a bounded domain into an interacting system of extended nonlocal nonlinear evolution equations in the whole space. The proof then uses the method of the nonlinear maximum principle for nonlocal operators in the extended system.

We give conditions for regularity of solutions of three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations based on the pressure and on structure functions.

We construct solutions of the magnetohydrostatic (MHS) equations in bounded domains and on the torus in three spatial dimensions, as infinite time limits of Voigt approximations of viscous, non-resistive incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations. The Voigt approximations modify the time evolution without introducing artificial viscosity. We consider the Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain of ${\mathbb {R}}^d$, $d=2,3$ with general nonequilibrium Dirichlet boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations. We prove the existence of smooth steady state solutions and present a sufficient condition in terms of only the boundary data that guarantees that these solutions have nonzero fluid velocity. We show that time evolving solutions are ultimately bounded uniformly, independently of their initial size. In addition, we consider one dimensional steady states with steady nonzero currents and show that they are globally nonlinearly stable as solutions in a three dimensional periodic strip, if the currents are sufficiently weak.

We study stationary free boundary configurations of an ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic fluid possessing nested flux surfaces. In 2D simply connected domains, we prove that if the magnetic field and velocity field are never commensurate, the only possible domain for any such equilibria is a disk, and the velocity and magnetic field are circular. We give examples of non-symmetric equilibria occupying a domain of any shape by imposing an external magnetic field generated by a singular current sheet charge distribution (external coils). Some results carry over to 3D axisymmetric solutions. In this paper we derive kinematic relations for quantities involving the rate of strain tensor and the Hessian of the pressure for solutions of the 3D Euler equations and the 2D Boussinesq equations. Using these kinematic relations, we prove new blow up criteria and obtain conditions for the absence of type I singularity for these equations. We obtain both global and localized versions of the results. Some of the new blow up criteria and type I conditions improve previous results of [3]., Comment: 14 pages

We prove a blow up criterion in terms of the Hessian of the pressure of smooth solutions $u\in C([0, T); W^{2,q} (\mathbb R^3))$, $q>3$ of the incompressible Euler equations. We show that a blow up at $t=T$ happens only if $$\int_0 ^T \int_0 ^t \left\{\int_0 ^s \|D^2 p (\tau)\|_{L^\infty} d\tau \exp \left( \int_{s} ^t \int_0 ^{\s} \|D^2 p (\tau)\|_{L^\infty} d\tau d\s \right) \right\}dsdt \, = +\infty.$$ As consequences of this criterion we show that there is no blow up at $t=T$ if $ \|D^2 p(t)\|_{L^\infty} \le \frac {c}{(T-t)^2}$ with $c<1$ as $t\nearrow T$. We consider the limit of vanishing Debye length for ionic diffusion in fluids, described by the Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes system. In the asymptotically stable cases of blocking (vanishing normal flux) and uniform selective (special Dirichlet) boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations, we prove that the ionic charge density $\rho$ converges in time to zero in the interior of the domain, in the limit of vanishing Debye length ($\epsilon\to 0$). For the unstable regime of Dirichlet boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations, we prove bounds that are uniform in time and $\epsilon$. We also consider electroneutral boundary conditions, for which we prove that electroneutrality $\rho\to 0$ is achieved at any fixed $\epsilon> 0$, exponentially fast in time in $L^p$, for all $1\le p<\infty$. The results hold for two oppositely charged ionic species with arbitrary ionic diffusivities, in bounded domains with smooth boundaries.

We construct smooth, non-symmetric plasma equilibria which possess closed, nested flux surfaces and solve the magnetohydrostatic (steady three-dimensional incompressible Euler) equations with a small force. The solutions are also `nearly' quasisymmetric. The primary idea is, given a desired quasisymmetry direction $\xi$, to change the smooth structure on space so that the vector field $\xi$ is Killing for the new metric and construct $\xi$--symmetric solutions of the magnetohydrostatic equations on that background by solving a generalized Grad-Shafranov equation. The Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes system models electrodiffusion of ions in a fluid. We prove global existence of solutions in bounded domains in three dimensions with either blocking (no-flux) or uniform selective (special Dirichlet) boundary conditions for ion concentrations. The global existence of strong solutions is established for initial conditions that are sufficiently small perturbations of steady state solutions. The solutions remain close to equilibrium in strong norms. The main two steps of the proof are (1) the decay of the sum of relative entropies (Kullback-Leibler divergences) and (2) the control of $L^2$ norms of deviations by the sum of relative entropies.

We consider ionic electrodiffusion in fluids, described by the Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes system. We prove that the system has global smooth solutions for arbitrary smooth data: arbitrary positive Dirichlet boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations, arbitrary Dirichlet boundary conditions for the potential, arbitrary positive initial concentrations, and arbitrary regular divergence-free initial velocities. The result holds for any positive diffusivities of ions, in bounded domains with smooth boundary in three space dimensions, in the case of two ionic species, coupled to Stokes equations for the fluid. The result also holds in the case of Navier-Stokes coupling, if the velocity is regular. The global smoothness of solutions is also true for arbitrarily many ionic species, if all their diffusivities are the same.

Flexibility and rigidity properties of steady (time-independent) solutions of the Euler, Boussinesq and Magnetohydrostatic equations are investigated. Specifically, certain Liouville-type theorems are established which show that suitable steady solutions with no stagnation points occupying a two-dimensional periodic channel, or axisymmetric solutions in (hollowed out) cylinder, must have certain structural symmetries. It is additionally shown that such solutions can be deformed to occupy domains which are themselves small perturbations of the base domain. We give a small data global well-posedness result for an incompressible Oldroyd-B model with wave number dissipation in the equation of stress tensor. The result is uniform in solvent Reynolds numbers, and requires only fractional wave-number dependent dissipation $(-\Delta)^{\beta}$, $\beta \ge \frac{1}{2}$ in the added stress., Comment: 17 pages

We obtain estimates near the boundary for the critical dissipative SQG equation in bounded domains, with the square root of the Dirichlet Laplacian dissipation. We prove that global regularity up to the boundary holds if and only if a certain quantitative vanishing of the scalar at the boundary is maintained.

We prove that given initial data $\omega_0\in L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^2)$, forcing $g\in L^\infty(0,T; L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^2))$, and any $T>0$, the solutions $u^\nu$ of Navier-Stokes converge strongly in $L^\infty(0,T;W^{1,p}(\mathbb{T}^2))$ for any $p\in [1,\infty)$ to the unique Yudovich weak solution $u$ of the Euler equations. A consequence is that vorticity distribution functions converge to their inviscid counterparts. As a byproduct of the proof, we establish continuity of the Euler solution map for Yudovich solutions in the $L^p$ vorticity topology. The main tool in these proofs is a uniformly controlled loss of regularity property of the linear transport by Yudovich solutions. We develop a method of obtaining a hierarchy of new higher-order entropies in the context of compressible models with local and non-local diffusion and isentropic pressure. The local viscosity is allowed to degenerate as the density approaches vacuum. The method provides a tool to propagate initial regularity of classical solutions provided no vacuum has formed and serves as an alternative to the classical energy method. We obtain a series of global well-posedness results for state laws in previously uncovered cases including $p(\rho) = c_p \rho$. We describe a method to construct smooth and compactly supported solutions of 3D incompressible Euler equations and related models. The method is based on localizable Grad-Shafranov equations and is inspired by the recent result \cite{gav}.

We discuss the Lagrangian-Eulerian framework for hydrodynamic models and provide a proof of Lipschitz dependence of solutions on initial data in path space. The paper presents a corrected version of the result in \cite{c1}.

We consider a sequence of Leray-Hopf weak solutions of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations on a bounded domain, in the vanishing viscosity limit. We provide sufficient conditions on the associated vorticity measures, away from the boundary, which ensure that as the viscosity vanishes the sequence converges to a weak solution of the Euler equations. We prove that the limit of any weakly convergent sequence of Leray-Hopf solutions of dissipative SQG equations is a weak solution of the inviscid SQG equation in bounded domains.

We consider a class of one dimensional compressible systems with degenerate diffusion coefficients. We establish the fact that the solutions remain smooth as long as the diffusion coefficients do not vanish, and give local and global existence results. The models include the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations, shallow water systems and the lubrication approximation of slender jets. We discuss a lubrication approximation model of the interface between two immiscible fluids in a Hele-Shaw cell, derived in \cite{CDGKSZ93} and widely studied since. The model consists of a single one dimensional evolution equation for the thickness $2h = 2h(x,t)$ of a thin neck of fluid, \[ \partial_t h + \partial_x( h \, \partial_x^3 h) = 0\, , \] for $x\in (-1,1)$ and $t\ge 0$. The boundary conditions fix the neck height and the pressure jump: \[ h(\pm 1,t) = 1, \qquad \partial_{x}^2 h(\pm 1,t) = P>0. \] We prove that starting from smooth and positive $h$, as long as $h(x,t) >0$, for $x\in [-1,1], \; t\in [0,T]$, no singularity can arise in the solution up to time $T$. As a consequence, we prove for any $P>2$ and any smooth and positive initial datum that the solution pinches off in either finite or infinite time, i.e., $\inf_{[-1,1]\times[0,T_*)} h = 0$, for some $T_* \in (0,\infty]$. These facts have been long anticipated on the basis of numerical and theoretical studies.

We prove that any weak space-time $L^2$ vanishing viscosity limit of a sequence of strong solutions of Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain of ${\mathbb{R}}^2$ satisfies the Euler equation if the solutions' local enstrophies are uniformly bounded. We also prove that $t-a.e.$ weak $L^2$ inviscid limits of solutions of 3D Navier-Stokes equations in bounded domains are weak solutions of the Euler equation if they locally satisfy a scaling property of their second order structure function. The conditions imposed are far away from boundaries, and wild solutions of Euler equations are not a priori excluded in the limit.

We prove local well-posedness for the inviscid surface quasigeostrophic (SQG) equation in bounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^2$. When fractional Dirichlet Laplacian dissipation is added, global existence of strong solutions is obtained for small data for critical and supercritical cases. Global existence of strong solutions with arbitrary data is obtained in the subcritical cases.

We prove existence of global weak $L^2$ solutions of the inviscid SQG equation in bounded domains.

We consider the vanishing viscosity limit of the Navier-Stokes equations in a half space, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We consider a model of electroconvection motivated by studies of the motion of a two dimensional annular suspended smectic film under the influence of an electric potential maintained at the boundary by two cylindrical electrodes. We prove that this electroconvection model has global in time unique smooth solutions.

We prove nonlinear lower bounds and commutator estimates for the Dirichlet fractional Laplacian in bounded domains. The applications include bounds for linear drift-diffusion equations with nonlocal dissipation and global existence of weak solutions of critical surface quasi-geostrophic equations.

We consider the 2D Muskat equation for the interface between two constant density fluids in an incompressible porous medium, with velocity given by Darcy's law. We establish that as long as the slope of the interface between the two fluids remains bounded and uniformly continuous, the solution remains regular. The proofs exploit the nonlocal nonlinear parabolic nature of the equations through a series of nonlinear lower bounds for nonlocal operators. These are used to deduce that as long as the slope of the interface remains uniformly bounded, the curvature remains bounded. We consider the global attractor of the critical SQG semigroup $S(t)$ on the scale-invariant space $H^1(\mathbb{T}^2)$. It was shown in~\cite{CTV13} that this attractor is finite dimensional, and that it attracts uniformly bounded sets in $H^{1+\delta}(\mathbb{T}^2)$ for any $\delta>0$, leaving open the question of uniform attraction in $H^1(\mathbb{T}^2)$. We consider the incompressible Euler equations on ${\mathbb R}^d$, where $d \in \{ 2,3 \}$. We present a Lagrangian-Eulerian strategy for proving uniqueness and local existence of solutions in path spaces of limited smoothness for a class of incompressible hydrodynamic models including Oldroyd-B type complex fluid models and zero magnetic resistivity magneto-hydrodynamics equations.

We present a simple, short and elementary proof that if $v$ is a Beltrami flow with a finite energy in $\mathbb R^3$ then $v=0$. We discuss general incompressible inviscid models, including the Euler equations, the surface quasi-geostrophic equation, incompressible porous medium equation, and Boussinesq equations. All these models have classical unique solutions, at least for short time. We show that they have real analytic Lagrangian paths. More precisely, we show that as long as a solution of any of these equations is in a class of regularity that assures H\"{o}lder continuous gradients of velocity, the corresponding Lagrangian paths are real analytic functions of time. We give an example of a well posed, finite energy, 2D incompressible active scalar equation with the same scaling as the surface quasi-geostrophic equation and prove that it can produce finite time singularities. In spite of its simplicity, this seems to be the first such example. Further, we construct explicit solutions of the 2D Boussinesq equations whose gradients grow exponentially in time for all time. This paper considers the three dimensional Muskat problem in the stable regime. We obtain a conservation law which provides an $L^2$ maximum principle for the fluid interface. We also show global in time existence for strong and weak solutions with initial data controlled by explicit constants. Furthermore we refine the estimates from our paper \cite{PDPB} to obtain global existence and uniqueness for strong solutions with larger initial data than we previously had in 2D. We provide local formulas for the pressure of incompressible fluids. The pressure can be expressed in terms of its average and averages of squares of velocity increments in arbitrary small neighborhoods. As application, we give a brief proof of the fact that $C^{\alpha}$ velocities have $C^{2\alpha}$ (or Lipschitz) pressures. We also give some regularity criteria for 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.

We prove the existence of a compact global attractor for the dynamics of the forced critical surface quasi-geostrophic equation (SQG) and prove that it has finite fractal (box-counting) dimension. In order to do so we give a new proof of global regularity for critical SQG. The main ingredient is the nonlinear maximum principle in the form of a nonlinear lower bound on the fractional Laplacian, which is used to bootstrap the regularity directly from $L^\infty$ to $C^\alpha$, without the use of De Giorgi techniques. We prove that for large time, the norm of the solution measured in a sufficiently strong topology becomes bounded with bounds that depend solely on norms of the force, which is assumed to belong merely to $L^\infty \cap H^1$. Using the fact that the solution is bounded independently of the initial data after a transient time, in spaces conferring enough regularity, we prove the existence of a compact absorbing set for the dynamics in $H^1$, obtain the compactness of the linearization and the continuous differentiability of the solution map. We then prove exponential decay of high yet finite dimensional volume elements in $H^1$ along solution trajectories, and use this property to bound the dimension of the global attractor.

We prove absence of anomalous dissipation of energy for forced critical SQG in two space dimensions.

We establish the existence and uniqueness of an ergodic invariant measure for 2D fractionally dissipated stochastic Euler equations on the periodic box, for any power of the dissipation term.

We prove global regularity of solutions of Oldroyd-B equations in 2 spatial dimensions with spatial diffusion of the polymeric stresses.

We obtain a family of nonlinear maximum principles for linear dissipative nonlocal operators, that are general, robust, and versatile. We use these nonlinear bounds to provide transparent proofs of global regularity for critical SQG and critical d-dimensional Burgers equations. In addition we give applications of the nonlinear maximum principle to the global regularity of a slightly dissipative anti-symmetric perturbation of 2d incompressible Euler equations and generalized fractional dissipative 2d Boussinesq equations.

This paper establishes several existence and uniqueness results for two families of active scalar equations with velocity fields determined by the scalars through very singular integrals. The first family is a generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation with the velocity field $u$ related to the scalar $\theta$ by $u=\nabla^\perp\Lambda^{\beta-2}\theta$, where $1<\beta\le 2$ and $\Lambda=(-\Delta)^{1/2}$ is the Zygmund operator. The borderline case $\beta=1$ corresponds to the SQG equation and the situation is more singular for $\beta>1$. We obtain the local existence and uniqueness of classical solutions, the global existence of weak solutions and the local existence of patch type solutions. The second family is a dissipative active scalar equation with $u=\nabla^\perp (\log(I-\Delta))^\mu\theta$ for $\mu>0$, which is at least logarithmically more singular than the velocity in the first family. We prove that this family with any fractional dissipation possesses a unique local smooth solution for any given smooth data. This result for the second family constitutes a first step towards resolving the global regularity issue recently proposed by K. Ohkitani \cite{Oh}.

This paper is devoted to the global (in time) regularity problem for a family of active scalar equations with fractional dissipation. Each component of the velocity field $u$ is determined by the active scalar $\theta$ through $\mathcal{R} \Lambda^{-1} P(\Lambda) \theta$ where $\mathcal{R}$ denotes a Riesz transform, $\Lambda=(-\Delta)^{1/2}$ and $P(\Lambda)$ represents a family of Fourier multiplier operators. The 2D Navier-Stokes vorticity equations correspond to the special case $P(\Lambda)=I$ while the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation to $P(\Lambda) =\Lambda$. We obtain the global regularity for a class of equations for which $P(\Lambda)$ and the fractional power of the dissipative Laplacian are required to satisfy an explicit condition. In particular, the active scalar equations with any fractional dissipation and with $P(\Lambda)= (\log(I-\Delta))^\gamma$ for any $\gamma>0$ are globally regular.

Any classical solution of the 2D incompressible Euler equation is global in time. However, it remains an outstanding open problem whether classical solutions of the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation preserve their regularity for all time. This paper studies solutions of a family of active scalar equations in which each component $u_j$ of the velocity field $u$ is determined by the scalar $\theta$ through $u_j =\mathcal{R} \Lambda^{-1} P(\Lambda) \theta$ where $\mathcal{R}$ is a Riesz transform and $\Lambda=(-\Delta)^{1/2}$. The 2D Euler vorticity equation corresponds to the special case $P(\Lambda)=I$ while the SQG equation to the case $P(\Lambda) =\Lambda$. We develop tools to bound $\|\nabla u||_{L^\infty}$ for a general class of operators $P$ and establish the global regularity for the Loglog-Euler equation for which $P(\Lambda)= (\log(I+\log(I-\Delta)))^\gamma$ with $0\le \gamma\le 1$. In addition, a regularity criterion for the model corresponding to $P(\Lambda)=\Lambda^\beta$ with $0\le \beta\le 1$ is also obtained.

We prove global existence and uniqueness of solutions of Oldroyd-B systems with relatively small data in $\Rr^d$, in a large functional setting ($C^{\alpha}\cap L^1$). This is a stability result, solutions select an equilibrium and converge exponentially to it. Large spatial derivatives of the initial density and stress are allowed, provided the $L^{\infty}$ norm of the density and stress are small enough. We prove global regularity for large data for a model in which the potential responds to high rates of strain in the fluid. We also prove global existence for a class of large data for a didactic scalar model which attempts to capture in the simplest way the essence of the dissipative nature of the coupling to fluid. This latter model has an unexpected cone invariance in function space that is crucial for the global existence.

The Muskat problem models the dynamics of the interface between two incompressible immiscible fluids with different constant densities. In this work we prove three results. First we prove an $L^2(\R)$ maximum principle, in the form of a new ``log'' conservation law \eqref{ln} which is satisfied by the equation \eqref{ec1d} for the interface. Our second result is a proof of global existence of Lipschitz continuous solutions for initial data that satisfy $\|f_0\|_{L^\infty}<\infty$ and $\|\partial_x f_0\|_{L^\infty}<1$. We take advantage of the fact that the bound $\|\partial_x f_0\|_{L^\infty}<1$ is propagated by solutions, which grants strong compactness properties in comparison to the log conservation law. Lastly, we prove a global existence result for unique strong solutions if the initial data is smaller than an explicitly computable constant, for instance $\| f\|_1 \le 1/5$.
