We present an experimental demonstration of high conversion efficiency Betatron x-ray radiation from petawatt laser irradiated near critical plasmas. Direct laser acceleration serves as the dominant regime when laser pulse of ~5e20 W/cm2 intensity is focused into plasmas with electron density of 3e20 /cm3. Electron beam with a charge of ~35 nC is accelerated up to a maximum energy of 70 MeV and emit x-rays when oscillating in the laser field. The deduced energy conversion efficiency from laser to x-rays is up to 1e-4, orders of magnitude higher than other betatron regimes. Enhancement of acceleration and radiation with sharp plasma density boundary is also obtained and further interpretated with 2D particle-in-cell simulations., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

A method is proposed to control the transverse motion and X-ray emission of an electron beam in a laser driven wakefield by tuning the laser spatial chirp. The dispersion of a transversely chirped laser pulse and the transverse nonuniform refractive index of the plasma channel result in transverse laser centroid oscillations, which leads to periodic transverse oscillations of the laser-driven wake. Electrons accelerated inside the wake also undergo transverse oscillations making wiggler like motion. Both the oscillation period and amplitude can be controlled by tuning the laser chirp, the pulse duration or the plasma channel width. As a result, the far field spectral distributions of the X-ray emission can be flexibly manipulated., Comment: 8 pages, 5figures

Magnetism of the $S$ = 1 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the spatially anisotropic square lattice has been scarcely explored. Here we report a study of the magnetism, specific heat, and thermal conductivity on Ni[SC(NH$_2$)$_2$]$_6$Br$_2$ (DHN) single crystals. Ni$^{2+}$ ions feature an $S$ = 1 rectangular lattice in the $bc$ plane, which can be viewed as an unfrustrated spatially anisotropic square lattice. A long-range antiferromagnetic order is developed at $T \rm_N =$ 2.23 K. Below $T\rm_N$, an upturn is observed in the $b$-axis magnetic susceptibility and the resultant minimum might be an indication for the $XY$ anisotropy in the ordered state. A gapped spin-wave dispersion is confirmed from the temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat. Anisotropic temperature-field phase diagrams are mapped out and possible magnetic structures are proposed., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B

It is shown by three-dimensional QED particle-in-cell simulation that as a laser pulse of 2.5 PW and 20 fs propagates along a sub-wavelength-wide solid wire, directional synchrotron $\gamma-$rays along the wire surface can be efficiently generated. With 8\% energy conversion from the pulse, the $\gamma-$rays contains $10^{12}$ photons between 5 and 500 MeV within 10 fs duration, corresponding to peak brilliance of $10^{27}$ photons ${\rm s^{-1}~ mrad^{-2}~ mm^{-2}}$ per 0.1\% bandwidth. The brilliance and photon energy are respectively 2 and 3 orders of magnitude higher than the highest values of synchrotron radiation facilities. The radiation is attributed to the generation of nC, GeV electron beams well guided along the wire surface and their wiggling motion in strong electrostatic and magnetostatic fields induced at the high-density-wire surface. In particular, these quasistatic fields are so strong that QED effects already play a significant role for the $\gamma-$ray radiation. With the laser power $P_0$ ranging from 0.5 PW to 5 PW available currently, this scheme can robustly produce $\gamma-$rays peaked at $1^\circ$ with few-mrad divergence and the photon energy and number roughly scales with $P_0$ and $P_0^{3/2}$, respectively. Our scheme embraces both the merits of high directionality comparable to those based upon laser wakefield acceleration and high charge comparable to those based upon laser-solid interaction., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

A new scheme for bright hard x-ray emission from laser wakefield electron accelerator is reported, where pure nitrogen gas is adopted. Intense Betatron x-ray beams are generated from ionization injected K-shell electrons of nitrogen into the accelerating wave bucket. The x-ray radiation shows synchrotron-like spectrum with total photon yield 8$\times$10$^8$/shot and $10^8$ over 110keV. In particular, the betatron hard x-ray photon yield is 10 times higher compared to the case of helium gas under the same laser parameters. Particle-in-cell simulation suggests that the enhancement of the x-ray yield results from ionization injection, which enables the electrons to be quickly accelerated to the driving laser region for subsequent betatron resonance. Employing the present scheme,the single stage nitrogen gas target could be used to generate stable high brightness betatron hard x-ray beams.

The heat transport of the spin-gapped material (CH_3)_2CHNH_3CuCl_3 (IPA-CuCl_3), a candidate quantum magnet with Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), is studied at ultra-low temperatures and in high magnetic fields. Due to the presence of the spin gap, the zero-field thermal conductivity (\kappa) is purely phononic and shows a ballistic behavior at T < 1 K. When the gap is closed by magnetic field at H = H_{c1}, where a long-range antiferromanetic (AF) order of Cu^{2+} moments is developed, the magnons contribute significantly to heat transport and exhibit a ballistic T^3 behavior at T < 600 mK. In addition, the low-T \kappa(H) isotherms show sharp peaks at H_{c1}, which indicates a gap re-opening in the AF state (H > H_{c1}) and demonstrates limited applicability of the BEC model to IPA-CuCl_3., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. The bulk single crystals of of low-dimensional magnet (CH$_3$)$_2$NH$_2$CuCl$_3$ (DMACuCl$_3$ or MCCL) are grown by a slow evaporation method with different kinds of solvents, different degrees of super-saturation of solution and different temperatures of solution, respectively. Among three kinds of solvent, methanol, alcohol and water, alcohol is found to be the best one for growing MCCL crystals because of its structural similarity to the raw materials and suitable evaporation rate. The best growth temperature is in the vicinity of 35 $^{\circ}$C. The problem of the crystals deliquescing in air has been solved through recrystallization process. The bulk single crystals of $S = 1$ chain compound Ni(C$_3$H$_{10}$N$_2$)$_2$NO$_2$ClO$_4$ are grown by using a slow evaporation method at a constant temperature and a slow cooling method. It is found that the optimum condition of growing large crystals is via slow evaporation at 25 $^\circ$C using 0.015 mol Ni(ClO$_4$)$_2$$\cdot$6H$_2$O, 0.015 mol NaNO$_2$, and 0.03 mol 1,3-propanediamine liquid dissolved into 30 ml aqueous solvent. High-quality crystals with size up to $18 \times 7.5 \times 5$ mm$^3$ are obtained. The single crystals are characterized by measurements of x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity. The susceptibilities along three crystallographic axes are found to exhibit broad peaks at $\sim 55$ K, and then decrease abruptly to zero at lower temperatures, which is characteristic of a Haldane chain system. The specific heat and the thermal conductivity along the $c$ axis can be attributed to the simple phononic contribution and are analyzed using the Debye approximation., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, published in Journal of Crystal Growth

We report a study on the heat transport of an S = 1 Haldane chain compound Ni(C_3H_{10}N_2)_2NO_2ClO_4 at low temperatures and in magnetic fields. The zero-field thermal conductivities show a remarkable anisotropy for the heat current along the spin-chain direction (\kappa_b) and the vertical direction (\kappa_c), implying a magnetic contribution to the heat transport along the spin-chain direction. The magnetic-field-induced change of the spin spectrum has obviously opposite impacts on \kappa_b and \kappa_c. In particular, \kappa_b(H) and \kappa_c(H) curves show peak-like increases and dip-like decreases, respectively, at \sim 9 T, which is the critical field that minimizes the spin gap. We study the low-temperature heat transport, as well as the magnetization and the specific heat, of TmMnO_3 single crystals to probe the transitions of magnetic structure induced by magnetic field. It is found that the low-T thermal conductivity (\kappa) shows strong magnetic-field dependence and the overall behaviors can be understood in the scenario of magnetic scattering on phonons. In addition, a strong "dip"-like feature shows up in \kappa(H) isotherms at 3.5--4 T for H \parallel c, which is related to a known spin re-orientation of Mn^{3+} moments. The absence of this phenomenon for H \parallel a indicates that the magnetic-structure transition of TmMnO_3 cannot be driven by the in-plane field. In comparison, the magnetothermal conductivity of TmMnO_3 is much larger than that of YMnO_3 but smaller than that of HoMnO_3, indicating that the magnetisms of rare-earth ions are playing the key role in the spin-phonon coupling of the hexagonal manganites., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. The smooth function reconstruction needs to use derivatives. In 2010, we used the gradually varied derivatives to successfully constructed smooth surfaces for real data. We also briefly explained why the gradually varied derivatives are needed. In the this paper, we present more reasons to enlighten of forcing derivatives to be continuous is necessary. This requirement seems not a must in theory for functions in continuous space, but it is truly important in function reconstruction for real problems. This paper is also to extend the meaning of the methodology for gradually varied derivatives to general purposes by considering forcing calculated derivatives to be "continuous" or gradually varied., Comment: Methodology

We study the low-temperature heat transport of Nd_3Ga_5SiO_{14}, which is a spin-liquid candidate, to probe the nature of ground state and the effect of magnetic field on the magnetic properties. The thermal conductivity (\kappa) shows a purely phononic transport in zero field. The external magnetic field along the c axis induces a dip-like behavior of \kappa(H), which can be attributed to a simple paramagnetic scattering on phonons. However, the magnetic field along the ab plane induces another step-like decrease of \kappa. This kind of \kappa(H) behavior is discussed to be related to a field-induced partial order, which yields low-energy magnetic excitations that significantly scatter phonons. These results point to a paramagnetic ground state that partial magnetic order can be induced by magnetic field along the ab plane, which is also signified by the low-T specific heat data., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. The very-low-temperature thermal conductivity (\kappa) is studied for BaCo_2V_2O_8, a quasi-one-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet exhibiting an unusual magnetic-field-induced order-to-disorder transition. The nearly isotropic transport in the longitudinal field indicates that the magnetic excitations scatter phonons rather than conduct heat. The field dependence of \kappa shows a sudden drop at \sim 4 T, where the system unndergoes the transition from the N\'eel order to the incommensurate state. Another dip at lower field of \sim 3 T indicates an unknown magnetic transition, which is likely due to the spin-flop transition. Moreover, the \kappa(H) in the transverse field shows a very deep valley-like feature, which moves slightly to higher field and becomes sharper upon lowering the temperature. This indicates a magnetic transition induced by the transverse field, which however is not predicted by the present theories for this low-dimensional spin system., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Bright betatron x-ray has been generated using an Ar clustering gas jet target irradiated with a 3 TW ultra-high contrast laser. The measured emission flux with photon energy > 2.4 keV reaches 2\times10^8 photons/shot. It is ten-fold enhancement comparing to the emission flux produced by using gas target in the same laser parameters. Observation shows that much larger electron beam charge and divergence angle lead to this improvement. Simulations point to the existence of cluster in gas results in the increasing of electron injection and much larger wiggling amplitude in wake-field, enriching the betatron x-ray photons.

We report a study of the low-temperature heat transport in the quasi-one-dimensional S = 1/2 alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic chain compound (CH_{3})_{2}NH_{2}CuCl_{3}. Both the temperature and magnetic-field dependencies of thermal conductivity are very complicated, pointing to the important role of spin excitations. It is found that magnetic excitations act mainly as the phonon scatterers in a broad temperature region from 0.3 to 30 K. In magnetic fields, the thermal conductivity show drastic changes, particularly at the field-induced transitions from the low-field N\'{e}el state to the spin-gapped state, the field-induced magnetic ordered state, and the spin polarized state. We report the study on the low-temperature heat transport of Ba_3Mn_2O_8 single crystal, a layered spin-dimer compound exhibiting the magnetic-field-induced magnetic order or the magnon Bose-Einstein condensation. The thermal conductivities (\kappa) along both the ab plane and the c axis show nearly isotropic dependence on magnetic field, that is, \kappa is strongly suppressed with increasing field, particularly at the critical fields of magnetic phase transitions. These results indicate that the magnetic excitations play a role of scattering phonons and the scattering effect is enhanced when the magnetic field closes the gap in the spin spectrum. We report a plasma-based strong THz source generated by using intense femtosecond laser pulses to irradiate solid targets at relativistic intensity >10^18W/cm2. Energies up to 50 microJ/sr per THz pulse is observed in the specular direction when the laser pulses are incident onto a copper foil at 67.5 degree. The source appears to be linearly polarized. The temporal, spectral properties of the THz are measured by a single shot, electro-optic sampling method with a chirped laser pulse. The THz radiation is attributed to the self-organized transient fast electron currents formed along the target surface. Such a strong THz source allows potential applications in THz nonlinear physics.

We report the magnetic-field dependence of thermal conductivity (\kappa) of an insulating cuprate Nd_2CuO_4 at very low temperatures down to 0.3 K. It is found that apart from the paramagnetic moments scattering on phonons, the Nd^{3+} magnons can act as either heat carriers or phonon scatterers, which strongly depends on the long-range antiferromagnetic transition and the field-induced transitions of spin structure. In particular, the Nd^{3+} magnons can effectively transport heat in the spin-flopped state of the Nd^{3+} sublattice. However, both the magnon transport and the magnetic scattering are quenched at very high fields. Bright Ar K-shell x-ray with very little background has been generated using an Ar clustering gas jet target irradiated with an 800 mJ, 30 fs ultra-high contrast laser, with the measured flux of 1.1 x 10^4 photons/mrad^2/pulse. This intense x-ray source critically depends on the laser contrast and the laser energy and the optimization of this source with interaction is addressed. Electron driven by laser electric field directly via nonlinear resonant is proved in simulation, resulting in effective electron heating and the enhancement of x-ray emission. The x-ray pulse duration is demonstrated to be only 10 fs, as well as a source size of 20 um, posing great potential application for single-shot ultrafast x-ray imaging., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Since the advent of chirped pulse amplification1 the peak power of lasers has grown dramatically and opened the new branch of high field science, delivering the focused irradiance, electric fields of which drive electrons into the relativistic regime. In a plasma wake wave generated by such a laser, modulations of the electron density naturally and robustly take the shape of paraboloidal dense shells, separated by evacuated regions, moving almost at the speed of light. When we inject another counter-propagating laser pulse, it is partially reflected from the shells, acting as relativistic flying (semi-transparent) mirrors, producing an extremely time-compressed frequency-multiplied pulse which may be focused tightly to the diffraction limit. This is as if the counterstreaming laser pulse bounces off a relativistically swung tennis racket, turning the ball of the laser photons into another ball of coherent X-ray photons but with a form extremely relativistically compressed to attosecond and zeptosecond levels. Here we report the first demonstration of the frequency multiplication detected from the reflection of a weak laser pulse in the region of the wake wave generated by the driver pulse in helium plasma. This leads to the possibility of very strong pulse compression and extreme coherent light intensification. This Relativistic Tennis with photon beams is demonstrated leading to the possibility toward reaching enormous electromagnetic field intensification and finally approaching the Schwinger field, toward which the vacuum nonlinearly warps and eventually breaks, producing electron-positron pairs., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

We studied the hard x-ray emission and the K-alpha x-ray conversion efficiency produced by 60 fs high contrast frequency doubled Ti: sapphire laser pulse focused on Cu foil target. Cu K-alpha photon emission obtained with second harmonic laser pulse is more intense than the case of fundamental laser pulse. The Cu K-alpha conversion efficiency shows strong dependence on laser nonlinearly skewed pulse shape and reaches the maximum value 4x10-4 with 100 fs negatively skewed pulse. It shows the electron spectrum shaping contribute to the increase of conversion efficiency. An experiment for studying laser self-guiding has been carried out for the high power ultrashort pulse laser interaction with an underdense plasma slab. Formation of an extremely long plasma channel and its bending are observed when the laser pulse power is much higher than the critical power for relativistic self-focusing. The long self-guiding channel formation is accompanied by electron acceleration with a low transverse emittance and high electric current. Particle-in-cell simulations show that laser bending occurs when the accelerated electrons overtake the laser pulse and modify the refractive index in the region in front of the laser pulse.

The Beijing Electron-Positron Collider (BEPC) has been running for both high energy physics (HEP) and synchrotron radiation (SR) researches since 1989. Good performance of BEPC accomplishes a lot of achievements in the tau-charm region over the past decade, and in many fields of SR applications as well. As an upgrading scheme from BEPC, the BEPCII project was approved by the Chinese government in the early time of this year, with a micro-beta scheme and multi-bunch collision in a doublering machine installed in the current BEPC tunnel. The design work of the BEPCII is being carried on.
