In the Wick-Cutkosky model, where two scalar massive constituents interact by means of the exchange of a scalar massless particle, the Bethe-Salpeter equation has solutions of two types, called "normal" and "abnormal". In the non-relativistic limit, the normal solutions correspond to the usual Coulomb spectrum, whereas the abnormal ones do not have non-relativistic counterparts -- they are absent in the Schr\"odinger equation framework. We have studied, in the formalism of the light-front dynamics, the Fock-space content of the abnormal solutions. It turns out that, in contrast to the normal ones, the abnormal states are dominated by the massless exchange particles (by 90 \% or more), what provides a natural explanation of their decoupling from the two-body Schr\"odinger equation. Assuming that one of the massive constituents is charged, we have calculated the electromagnetic elastic form factors of the normal and abnormal states, as well as the transition form factors. The results on form factors confirm the many-body nature of the abnormal states, as found from the Fock-space analysis. The abnormal solutions have thus properties similar to those of hybrid states, made here essentially of two massive constituents and several or many massless exchange particles. They could also be interpreted as the Abelian scalar analogs of the QCD hybrid states. We describe 19B in terms of a 17B-n-n three-body system, where the two-body subsystems 17B-n and n-n are unbound (virtual) states close to the unitary limit. The energy of 19B ground state is well reproduced and two low-lying resonances are predicted. Their eventual link with the Efimov physics is discussed. The Bethe-Salpeter equation for two massive scalar particles interacting by scalar massless exchange has solutions of two types, which differ from each other by their behavior in the non-relativistic limit: the normal solutions which turn into the Coulomb ones and the "abnormal" solutions. The latter ones have no non-relativistic counterparts and disappear in the non-relativistic limit. We studied the composition of all these states. It turns out that the normal states, even for large binding energy, are dominated by two massive particles. Whereas, the contribution of the two-body sector into the abnormal states, even for small binding energy, is of the order of 1% only; they are dominated by an indefinite number of the massless particles. Bethe-Salpeter equation, for massless exchange and large fine structure constant $\alpha>\pi/4$, in addition to the Balmer series, provides another (abnormal) series of energy levels which are not given by the Schr\"odinger equation. So strong field can be created by a point-like charge $Z>107$. The nuclei with this charge, though available, they are far from to be point-like that weakens the field. Therefore, the abnormal states of this origin hardly exist. We analyze the more realistic case of exchange by a massive particle when the large value of coupling constant is typical for the strong interaction. It turns out that this interaction still generates a series of abnormal relativistic states. The properties of these solutions are studied. By solving the 5-body Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations in configuration space with realistic nuclear Hamiltonians we have studied the resonant states of $^5$H isotope. Two different methods, allowing to bypass the exponentially diverging boundary conditions, have been employed providing consistent results. The existence of $^5$H broad J$^{\pi}$=1/2$^+$,3/2$^+$,5/2$^+$ states as S-matrix poles has been confirmed and compared with the, also calculated, resonant states in $^4$H isotope. We have established that the positions of these resonances only mildly depend on the nuclear interaction model., Comment: to appear in Physics Letters B (2019)

The bound state Bethe-Salpeter amplitude was expressed by Nakanishi in terms of a smooth weight function g. By using the generalized Stieltjes transform, we derive an integral equation for the Nakanishi function g for a bound state case. It has the standard form g= Vg, where V is a two-dimensional integral operator. The prescription for obtaining the kernel V starting with the kernel K of the Bethe-Salpeter equation is given., Comment: 7 pages

The bound state Bethe-Salpeter amplitude was expressed by Nakanishi using a two-dimensional integral representation, in terms of a smooth weight function $g$, which carries the detailed dynamical information. A similar, but one-dimensional, integral representation can be obtained for the Light-Front wave function in terms of the same weight function $g$. By using the generalized Stieltjes transform, we first obtain $g$ in terms of the Light-Front wave function in the complex plane of its arguments. Next, a new integral equation for the Nakanishi weight function $g$ is derived for a bound state case. It has the standard form $g= N g$, where $N$ is a two-dimensional integral operator. We give the prescription for obtaining the kernel $ N$ starting with the kernel $K$ of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We propose a method to reconstruct the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude in Minkowski space given the Euclidean Bethe-Salpeter amplitude -- or alternatively the Light-Front wave function -- as input. The method is based on the numerical inversion of the Nakanishi integral representation and computing the corresponding weight function. This inversion procedure is, in general, rather unstable, and we propose several ways to considerably reduce the instabilities. In terms of the Nakanishi weight function, one can easily compute the BS amplitude, the LF wave function and the electromagnetic form factor. The latter ones are very stable in spite of residual instabilities in the weight function. This procedure allows both, to continue the Euclidean BS solution in the Minkowski space and to obtain a BS amplitude from a LF wave function., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

We review a method to directly solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space, both for bound and scattering states. It is based on a proper treatment of the many singularities which appear in the kernel and propagators. The off-mass shell scattering amplitude for spinless particles interacting by a one boson exchange was computed for the first time. Using our Minkowski space solutions for the initial (bound) and final (scattering) states, we calculate elastic and transition (bound to scattering state) electromagnetic form factors. We consider the theoretical possibility to generate a narrow resonance in the four neutron system as suggested by a recent experimental result. To that end, a phenomenological $T=3/2$ three neutron force is introduced, in addition to a realistic $NN$ interaction. We inquire what should be the strength of the $3n$ force in order to generate such a resonance. The reliability of the three-neutron force in the $T=3/2$ channel is exmined, by analyzing its consistency with the low-lying $T=1$ states of $^4$H, $^4$He and $^4$Li and the $^3{\rm H} + n$ scattering. The {\it ab initio} solution of the $4n$ Schr\"{o}dinger equation is obtained using the complex scaling method with boundary conditions appropiate to the four-body resonances. We find that in order to generate narrow $4n$ resonant states a remarkably attractive $3N$ force in the $T=3/2$ channel is required., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, minor change, published version, to be published in Physical Review C

We show that the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the scattering amplitude in the limit of zero incident energy can be transformed into a purely Euclidean form, as it is the case for the bound states. The decoupling between Euclidean and Minkowski amplitudes is only possible for zero energy scattering observables and allows determining the scattering length from the Euclidean Bethe-Salpeter amplitude. Such a possibility strongly simplifies the numerical solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation and suggests an alternative way to compute the scattering length in Lattice Euclidean calculations without using the Luscher formalism. The derivations contained in this work were performed for scalar particles and one-boson exchange kernel. The transition form factor for electrodisintegration of a two-body bound system is calculated in the Bethe-Salpeter framework. For the initial (bound) and the final (scattering) states, we use our solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space which were first obtained recently. The gauge invariance, which manifests itself in the conservation of the transition electromagnetic current Jq = 0, is studied numerically. It results from a cancellation between the plane wave and the final state interaction contributions. This cancellation takes place only if the initial bound state BS amplitude, the final scattering state and the operator of electromagnetic current are strictly consistent with each other, that is if they are found in the same dynamical framework. The charge exchange of vector polarised deuterons on a polarised hydrogen target has been studied in a high statistics experiment at the COSY-ANKE facility at a deuteron beam energy of Td = 726 MeV. By selecting two fast protons at low relative energy E_{pp}, the measured analysing powers and spin correlations are sensitive to interference terms between specific neutron-proton charge-exchange amplitudes at a neutron kinetic energy of Tn ~ 1/2 Td =363 MeV. An impulse approximation calculation, which takes into account corrections due to the angular distribution in the diproton, describes reasonably the dependence of the data on both E_{pp} and the momentum transfer. This lends broad support to the current neutron-proton partial-wave solution that was used in the estimation.

Using our solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation with OBE kernel in Minkowski space both for the bound and scattering states, we calculate the transition form factors for electrodisintegration of the bound system which determine the electromagnetic current J of this process. Special emphasis is put on verifying the gauge invariance which should manifest itself in the current conservation. We find that for any value of the momentum transfer q the contributions of the plane wave and the final state interaction to the quantity J.q cancel each other thus providing J.q=0. However, this cancellation is obtained only if the initial Bethe-Salpeter amplitude (bound state), the final one (scattering state) and the current operator are strictly consistent with each other. Experimental evidence demonstrating that anomalous localization of waves can be induced in a controllable manner is reported. A microwave waveguide with dielectric slabs randomly placed is used to confirm the presence of anomalous localization. If the random spacing between slabs follows a distribution with a power-law tail (L\'evy-type distribution), unconventional properties in the microwave-transmission fluctuations take place revealing the presence of anomalous localization. We study both theoretically and experimentally the complete distribution of the transmission through random waveguides characterized by $\alpha=1/2$ ("L\'evy waveguides") and $\alpha=3/4$, $\alpha$ being the exponent of the power-law tail of the L\'evy-type distribution. As we show, the transmission distributions are determined by only two parameters, both of them experimentally accessible. When a two-body system is bound by a zero-range interaction, the corresponding three-body system -- considered in a non-relativistic framework -- collapses, that is its binding energy is unbounded from below. In a paper by J.V. Lindesay and H.P. Noyes it was shown that the relativistic effects result in an effective repulsion in such a way that three-body binding energy remains also finite, thus preventing the three-body system from collapse. Later, this property was confirmed in other works based on different versions of relativistic approaches. However, the three-body system exists only for a limited range of two-body binding energy values. For stronger two-body interaction, the relativistic three-body system still collapses. A similar phenomenon was found in a two-body systems themselves: a two-fermion system with one-boson exchange interaction in a state with zero angular momentum J=0 exists if the coupling constant does not exceed some critical value but it also collapses for larger coupling constant. For a J=1 state, it collapses for any coupling constant value. These properties are called "critical stability". This contribution aims to be a brief review of this field pioneered by H.P. The n-d elastic and breakup cross sections are computed by solving the three-body Faddeev equations for realistic and semi-realistic Nucleon-Nucleon potentials. These cross sections are inserted in the Monte Carlo simulation of the nuclear processes considered in the International Handbook of Evaluated Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments (ICSBEP). The results obtained using thes ab initio n-d cross sections are compared with those provided by the most renown international libraries.

Solution of the scattering problem turns to be very difficult task both from the formal as well as from the computational point of view. If the last two decades have witnessed decisive progress in ab initio bound state calculations, rigorous solution of the scattering problem remains limited to A$\leq$4 case. Therefore there is a rising interest to apply bound-state-like methods to handle non-relativistic scattering problems. In this article the latest theoretical developments in this field are reviewed. Five fully rigorous methods will be discussed, which address the problem of nuclear collisions in full extent (including the break-up problem) at the same time avoiding treatment of the complicate boundary conditions or integral kernel singularities. The charge-exchange break-up of polarised deuterons pol{d}p -> {pp}n, where the final {pp} diproton system has a very low excitation energy and hence is mainly in the 1S0 state, is a powerful tool to probe the spin-flip terms in the proton-neutron charge-exchange scattering. Recent measurements with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring at 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27 GeV have extended these studies into the pion-production regime in order to investigate the mechanism for the excitation of the Delta(1232) isobar in the pol{d}p -> {pp}X reaction. Values of the differential cross section and two deuteron tensor analysing powers, A_{xx} and A_{yy}, have been extracted in terms of the momentum transfer to the diproton or the invariant mass Mx of the unobserved system X. The unpolarised cross section in the high Mx region is well described in a model that includes only direct excitation of the Delta isobar through undistorted one pion exchange. However, the cross section is grossly underestimated for low Mx, even when Delta excitation in the projectile deuteron is included in the calculation. Furthermore, direct Delta production through one pion exchange only reproduces the angular dependence of the difference between the two tensor analysing powers., Comment: 7 pages with 6 figures

The unpolarised differential cross section and the two deuteron tensor analysing powers A_{xx} and A_{yy} of the pol{d}p -> (pp)n charge-exchange reaction have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring. Using deuteron beams with energies 1.2, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27 GeV, data were obtained for small momentum transfers to a (pp) system with low excitation energy. The results at the three lower energies are consistent with impulse approximation predictions based upon the current knowledge of the neutron-proton amplitudes. However, at 2.27GeV, where these amplitudes are far more uncertain, agreement requires a reduction in the overall double-spin-flip contribution, with an especially significant effect in the longitudinal direction. These conclusions are supported by measurements of the deuteron-proton spin-correlation parameters C_{x,x} and C_{y,y} that were carried out in the pol{d}pol{p} -> (pp)n reaction at 1.2 and 2.27GeV. The values obtained for the proton analysing power also suggest the need for a radical re-evaluation of the neutron-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at the higher energy. It is therefore clear that such measurements can provide a valuable addition to the neutron-proton database in the charge-exchange region., Comment: 13 pages with 13 figures

The masses of the low-lying strange and charm baryons are evaluated using two degenerate flavors of twisted mass sea quarks for pion masses in the range of about 260 MeV to 450 MeV. The strange and charm valence quark masses are tuned to reproduce the mass of the kaon and D-meson at the physical point. The tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action is employed. We use three values of the lattice spacing, corresponding to $\beta=3.9$, $\beta=4.05$ and $\beta=4.2$ with $r_0/a=5.22(2)$, $r_0/a=6.61(3)$ and $r_0/a=8.31(5)$ respectively. %spacings $a=0.0855(5)$ and $a=0.0667(3)$ determined from the pion decay constant. We examine the dependence of the strange and charm baryons on the lattice spacing and strange and charm quark masses. We present results on the electroweak form factors and on the lower moments of parton distributions of the nucleon, within lattice QCD using two dynamical flavors of degenerate twisted mass fermions. Results are obtained on lattices with three different values of the lattice spacings, namely a=0.089 fm, a=0.070 fm and a=0.056 fm, allowing the investigation of cut-off effects. The volume dependence is examined by comparing results on two lattices of spatial length L=2.1 fm and L=2.8 fm. The simulations span pion masses in the range of 260-470 MeV. The n-3H and p-3He elastic phase-shifts below the trinucleon disintegration thresholds are calculated by solving the 4-nucleon problem with three different realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions (the I-N3LO model by Entem and Machleidt, the Argonne v18 potential model, and a low-k model derived from the CD-Bonn potential). Three different methods -- Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas, Hyperspherical Harmonics, and Faddeev-Yakubovsky -- have been used and their respective results are compared. For both n-3H and p-3He we observe a rather good agreement between the three different theoretical methods. We also compare the theoretical predictions with the available experimental data, confirming the large underprediction of the p-3He analyzing power., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

We present the results of the quantum field theory approach to nuclear Yukawa model obtained by standard lattice techniques. We have considered the simplest case of two identical fermions interacting via a scalar meson exchange. Calculations have been performed using Wilson fermions in the quenched approximation. We found the existence of a critical coupling constant above which the model cannot be numerically solved. The range of the accessible coupling constants is below the threshold value for producing two-body bound states. Two-body scattering lengths have been obtained and compared to the non relativistic results., Comment: 15 pages

We present results on the nucleon electromagnetic form factors within lattice QCD using two flavors of degenerate twisted mass fermions. Volume effects are examined using simulations at two volumes of spatial length L=2.1 fm and L=2.8 fm. We present results of lattice QCD simulations with mass-degenerate up and down and mass-split strange and charm (Nf=2+1+1) dynamical quarks using Wilson twisted mass fermions at maximal twist. The tuning of the strange and charm quark masses is performed at three values of the lattice spacing a~0.06 fm, a~0.08 fm and a~0.09 fm with lattice sizes ranging from L~1.9 fm to L~3.9 fm. We present a new method for solving the two-body Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space. The method of solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space, which we developed previously for spinless particles, is extended to a system of two fermions. The method is based on the Nakanishi integral representation of the amplitude and on projecting the equation on the light-front plane. The singularities in the projected two-fermion kernel are regularized without modifying the original Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes. The numerical solutions for the J=0 bound state with the scalar, pseudoscalar and massless vector exchange kernels are found. The stability of the scalar and positronium states without vertex form factor is discussed. Binding energies are in close agreement with the Euclidean results. The method of solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space, developed previously for spinless particles, is extended to a system of two fermions. The method is based on the Nakanishi integral representation of the amplitude and on projecting the equation on the light-front plane. The singularities in the projected two-fermion kernel are regularized without modifying the original BS amplitudes. The numerical solutions for the J=0 bound state with the scalar, pseudoscalar and massless vector exchange kernels are found. Binding energies are in close agreement with the Euclidean results. We present results on the electromagnetic and axial nucleon form factors using two degenerate flavors of twisted mass fermions on lattices of spatial size 2.1 fm and 2.7 fm and a lattice spacing of about 0.09 fm. We consider pion masses in the range of 260-470 MeV. We chirally extrapolate results on the nucleon axial ch arge, the isovector Dirac and Pauli root mean squared radii and magnetic moment to the physical point and co mpare to experiment., Comment: Report no. added; typos corrected. The masses of the low lying baryons are evaluated using two degenerate flavors of twisted mass sea quarks corresponding to pseudo scalar masses in the range of about 270-500 MeV. The strange valence quark mass is tuned to reproduce the mass of the kaon in the physical limit. The tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action is employed. We use lattices of spatial size 2.1 fm and 2.7 fm at two values of the lattice spacing with $r_0/a=5.22(2)$ and $r_0/a=6.61(3)$. We check for both finite volume and cut-off effects on the baryon masses. We performed a detailed study of the chiral extrapolation of the octet and decuplet masses using SU(2) $\chi$PT. The lattice spacings determined using the nucleon mass at the physical point are consistent with the values extracted using the pion decay constant. We examine the issue of isospin symmetry breaking for the octet and decuplet baryons and its dependence on the lattice spacing. We show that in the continuum limit isospin breaking is consistent with zero, as expected. We present results on the mass of the baryon octet and decuplet using two flavors of light dynamical twisted mass fermions. The strange quark mass is fixed to its physical value from the kaon sector in a partially quenched set up. Calculations are performed for light quark masses corresponding to a pion mass in the range 270-500 MeV and lattice sizes of 2.1 fm and 2.7 fm. We check for cut-off effects and isospin breaking by evaluating the baryon masses at two different lattice spacings. The differential cross section and deuteron analysing powers of the dp -> {pp}n charge-exchange reaction have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring. Using a deuteron beam of energy 1170 MeV, data were obtained for small momentum transfers to a {pp} system with low excitation energy. A good quantitative understanding of all the measured observables is provided by the impulse approximation using known neutron-proton amplitudes. The proof of principle achieved here for the method suggests that measurements at higher energies will provide useful information in regions where the existing np database is far less reliable., Comment: 11 pages with 5 figures

For a relativistic system of two scalar particles, we find the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude in Minkowski space and use it to compute the electromagnetic form factor. The comparison with Euclidean space calculation shows that the Wick rotation in the form factor integral induces errors which increase with the momentum transfer Q^2. At JLab domain (Q^2=10 GeV^2/c^2), they are about 30%. Static approximation results in an additional and more significant error. On the contrary, the form factor calculated in light-front dynamics is almost indistinguishable from the Minkowski space one., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Eur. Phys. J. We present results on the mass of the nucleon and the Delta using two dynamical degenerate twisted mass quarks and the tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action. The evaluation is performed at four quark masses corresponding to a pion mass in the range of about 300-600 MeV on lattices of 2.1-2.7 fm. We check for cut-off effects by evaluating these baryon masses on lattices of spatial size 2.1 fm at beta=3.9 and beta=4.05 and on a lattice of 2.4 fm at beta=3.8. The values we find are compatible within our statistical errors. Lattice results are extrapolated to the physical limit using continuum chiral perturbation theory. Performing a combined fit to our lattice data at beta=3.9 and beta=4.05 we find a nucleon mass of 964\pm 28 (stat.) \pm 8 (syst.) MeV. The nucleon mass at the physical point provides an independent determination of the lattice spacing. Using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory at O(p^3) we find a_{\beta=3.9}=0.0890\pm 0.0039(stat.) \pm 0.0014(syst.) fm, and a_{\beta=4.05}= 0.0691\pm 0.0034(stat.) \pm 0.0010(syst.) fm, in good agreement with the values determined from the pion decay constant. Isospin violating lattice artifacts in the Delta-system are found to be compatible with zero for the values of the lattice spacings used in this work. Performing a combined fit to our lattice data at beta=3.9 and beta=4.05 we find for the masses of the Delta^{++,-} and Delta^{+,0} 1316 \pm 60 (stat.) MeV and 1330 \pm 74 (stat.) MeV respectively. The electromagnetic form factors calculated through Euclidean Bethe-Salpeter amplitude and through the light-front wave function are compared with the one found using the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude in Minkowski space. The form factor expressed through the Euclidean Bethe-Salpeter amplitude (both within and without static approximation) considerably differs from the Minkowski one, whereas form factor found in the light-front approach is almost indistinguishable from it., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures. We investigate the spatial structure of the two-neutron wave function in the Borromean nucleus $^{11}$Li, using a three-body model of $^9$Li $+n+n$, which includes many-body correlations stemming from the Pauli principle. The behavior of the neutron pair at different densities is simulated by calculating the two-neutron wave function at several distances between the core nucleus $^9$Li and the center of mass of the two neutrons. With this representation, a strong concentration of the neutron pair on the nuclear surface is for the first time quantitatively established for neutron-rich nuclei. That is, the neutron pair wave function in $^{11}$Li has an oscillatory behavior at normal density, while it becomes a well localized single peak in the dilute density region around the nuclear surface. We point out that these features qualitatively correspond to the BCS and BEC-like structures of the pair wave function found in infinite nuclear matter., Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figures. Some results obtained by a new method for solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation are presented. The method is valid for any kernel given by irreducible Feynman graphs.
