Orphan gamma-ray burst afterglows are good candidates to learn more about the GRB physics and progenitors or for the development of multi-messenger analysis with gravitational waves. Our objective is to identify orphan afterglows in Rubin LSST data, by using the characteristic features of their light curves. In this work, we generated a population of short GRBs based on the Swift SBAT4 catalogue, and we simulated their off-axis afterglow light curves with afterglowpy. We then used the rubin_sim package to simulate observations of these orphan afterglows with Rubin LSST and proceeded with the characterisation of orphan light curves by extracting a number of parameters. The same parameters are computed for the ELAsTiCC (Extended LSST Astronomical Time-series Classification Challenge) data set, a simulated alert stream of the Rubin LSST data. We then started to develop a machine learning filter able to discriminate orphan-like events among all the variable objects. Arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) observed above $4\times10^{19}\,$eV provide evidence of localized excesses that are key to identifying their sources. We leverage the 3D matter distribution from optical and infrared surveys as a density model of UHECR sources, which are considered to be transient. Agreement of the sky model with UHECR data imposes constraints on both the emission rate per unit matter and the time spread induced by encountered turbulent magnetic fields. Based on radio measurements of cosmic magnetism, we identify the Local Sheet as the magnetized structure responsible for the kiloyear duration of UHECR bursts for an observer on Earth and find that the turbulence amplitude must be within $0.5-20\,$nG for a coherence length of $10\,$kpc. At the same time, the burst-rate density must be above $50\,$Gpc$^{-3}\,$yr$^{-1}$ for Local-Sheet galaxies to reproduce the UHECR excesses and below $5\,000\,$Gpc$^{-3}\,$yr$^{-1}$ ($30\,000\,$Gpc$^{-3}\,$yr$^{-1}$) for the Milky Way (Local-Group galaxies) not to outshine other galaxies. For the transient emissions of protons and nuclei to match the energy spectra of UHECRs, the kinetic energy of the outflows responsible for UHECR acceleration must be below $4\times10^{54}\,$erg and above $5\times10^{50}\,$erg ($2\times10^{49}\,$erg) if we consider the Milky Way (or not). We present 294 pulsars found in GeV data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Another 33 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered in deep radio searches of LAT sources will likely reveal pulsations once phase-connected rotation ephemerides are achieved. A further dozen optical and/or X-ray binary systems co-located with LAT sources also likely harbor gamma-ray MSPs. This catalog thus reports roughly 340 gamma-ray pulsars and candidates, 10% of all known pulsars, compared to $\leq 11$ known before Fermi. Half of the gamma-ray pulsars are young. Of these, the half that are undetected in radio have a broader Galactic latitude distribution than the young radio-loud pulsars. The others are MSPs, with 6 undetected in radio. Overall, >235 are bright enough above 50 MeV to fit the pulse profile, the energy spectrum, or both. For the common two-peaked profiles, the gamma-ray peak closest to the magnetic pole crossing generally has a softer spectrum. The spectral energy distributions tend to narrow as the spindown power $\dot E$ decreases to its observed minimum near $10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$, approaching the shape for synchrotron radiation from monoenergetic electrons. We calculate gamma-ray luminosities when distances are available. Our all-sky gamma-ray sensitivity map is useful for population syntheses. Compilation of the six contributions to the ICRC conference 2021 by the CORSIKA 8 Collaboration. The status of the project is illustrated. In particular, the secondary hadron as well as the electromagnetic cascades are being validated individually, and current results are reviewed. A novel framework for radio emission simulations is presented, which is designed given the modular nature of CORSIKA 8 to support, both, the CoREAS as well as the ZHS formalism. At the same time, first Cherenkov emission calculations are shown which are based on CORSIKA 8 coupled with a GPU Cherenkov emission code. Finally, a new powerful feature of CORSIKA 8 is illustrated, where the entire genealogy of air shower particles can be studied in all details., Comment: ICRC 2021 conference, 6 proceedings, 51 pages

Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) are ground-based indirect detectors for cosmic gamma rays with energies above tens of GeV. The major backgrounds for gamma-ray observations in IACTs are cosmic-ray charged particles. The capability to reject these backgrounds is the most important factor determining the gamma-ray sensitivity of IACT systems. Monte Carlo simulations are used to estimate the residual background rates and sensitivity of the systems during the design and construction phase. Uncertainties in the modeling of high-energy hadronic interactions of cosmic rays with nuclei in the air propagate into the estimates of residual background rates and subsequently into the estimated instrument sensitivity. We investigate the influence of the difference in the current hadronic interaction models on the estimated gamma-ray sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array using four interaction models (QGSJET-II-03, QGSJET-II-04, EPOS-LHC, and SIBYLL2.3c) implemented in the air shower simulation tool CORSIKA. Variations in background rates of up to a factor 2 with respect to QGSJET-II-03 are observed between the models, mainly due to differences in the $\pi^0$ production spectrum. These lead to ~30% differences in the estimated gamma-ray sensitivity in the 1 - 30 TeV region, assuming a 50-hour observation of a gamma-ray point-like source. Fink is a broker designed to enable science with large time-domain alert streams such as the one from the upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). It exhibits traditional astronomy broker features such as automatised ingestion, annotation, selection and redistribution of promising alerts for transient science. It is also designed to go beyond traditional broker features by providing real-time transient classification which is continuously improved by using state-of-the-art Deep Learning and Adaptive Learning techniques. These evolving added values will enable more accurate scientific output from LSST photometric data for diverse science cases while also leading to a higher incidence of new discoveries which shall accompany the evolution of the survey. COsmic Ray SImulations for KAscade) is a program for detailed simulation of extensive air showers initiated by high energy cosmic ray particles in the atmosphere, and is used today by almost all the major instruments that aim at measuring primary and secondary cosmic rays on the ground. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), currently under construction, is the next-generation instrument in the field of very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. Detailed CORSIKA Monte Carlo simulations will be regularly performed in parallel to CTA operations to estimate the instrument response functions, necessary to extract the physical properties of the cosmic sources from the measurements during data analysis. The estimated CPU time associated with these simulations is very high, of the order of 200 million HS06 hours per year. Code optimization becomes a necessity towards fast productions and limited costs. We propose in this paper multiple code transformations that aim to facilitate automatic vectorization done by the compiler, ensuring minimal external libraries requirement and high hardware portability.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation ground based observatory for gamma ray astronomy at very high energies. Employing more than 100 Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes in the northern and southern hemispheres, it was designed to reach unprecedented sensitivity and energy resolution. Understanding and correcting for systematic biases on the absolute energy scale and instrument response functions will be a crucial issue for the performance of CTA. The LUPM group and the Spanish/Italian/Slovenian collaboration are currently building two Raman LIDAR prototypes for the online atmospheric calibration along the line of sight of the CTA. Requirements for such a solution include the ability to characterize aerosol extinction at two wavelengths to distances of 30 km with an accuracy better than 5%, within time scales of about a minute, steering capabilities and close interaction with the CTA array control and data acquisition system as well as other auxiliary instruments. Our Raman LIDARs have design features that make them different from those used in atmospheric science and are characterized by large collecting mirrors (2.5 m2), liquid light guides that collect the light at the focal plane and transport it to the readout system, reduced acquisition time and highly precise Raman spectrometers. The Raman LIDARs will participate in a cross calibration and characterization campaign of the atmosphere at the CTA North site at La Palma, together with other site characterization instruments. After a one year test period there, an in depth evaluation of the solutions adopted by the two projects will lead to a final Raman LIDAR design proposal for both CTA sites.

The landscape of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy is drastically changing with the perspective of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) composed of more than 100 Cherenkov telescopes. For the first time in this energy domain, CTA will be operated as an observatory open to the astronomy community. In this context, a structured high level data model is being developed to describe a CTA observation. The data model includes different classes of metadata on the project definition, the configuration of the instrument, the ambient conditions, the data acquisition and the data processing. This last part relies on the Provenance Data Model developed within the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA), for which CTA is one of the main use cases. The CTA data model should also be compatible with the Virtual Observatory (VO) for data diffusion. We present the last developments on the IVOA Provenance data model, mainly based on the W3C PROV concept. In the context of the Cherenkov astronomy, the data processing stages imply both assumptions and comparison to dedicated simulations. As a consequence, Provenance information is crucial to the end user in order to interpret the high level data products. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), currently in preparation, is thus a perfect test case for the development of an IVOA standard on Provenance information. X-ray polarimetry, sometimes alone, and sometimes coupled to spectral and temporal variability measurements and to imaging, allows a wealth of physical phenomena in astrophysics to be studied. X-ray polarimetry investigates the acceleration process, for example, including those typical of magnetic reconnection in solar flares, but also emission in the strong magnetic fields of neutron stars and white dwarfs. It detects scattering in asymmetric structures such as accretion disks and columns, and in the so-called molecular torus and ionization cones. In addition, it allows fundamental physics in regimes of gravity and of magnetic field intensity not accessible to experiments on the Earth to be probed. Finally, models that describe fundamental interactions (e.g. quantum gravity and the extension of the Standard Model) can be tested. We describe in this paper the X-ray Imaging Polarimetry Explorer (XIPE), proposed in June 2012 to the first ESA call for a small mission with a launch in 2017 but not selected. XIPE is composed of two out of the three existing JET-X telescopes with two Gas Pixel Detectors (GPD) filled with a He-DME mixture at their focus and two additional GPDs filled with pressurized Ar-DME facing the sun. The Minimum Detectable Polarization is 14 % at 1 mCrab in 10E5 s (2-10 keV) and 0.6 % for an X10 class flare. The Half Energy Width, measured at PANTER X-ray test facility (MPE, Germany) with JET-X optics is 24 arcsec. XIPE takes advantage of a low-earth equatorial orbit with Malindi as down-link station and of a Mission Operation Center (MOC) at INPE (Brazil)., Comment: 49 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables. The development of micropixel gas detectors, capable to image tracks produced in a gas by photoelectrons, makes possible to perform polarimetry of X-ray celestial sources in the focus of grazing incidence X-ray telescopes. HXMT is a mission by the Chinese Space Agency aimed to survey the Hard X-ray Sky with Phoswich detectors, by exploitation of the direct demodulation technique. Since a fraction of the HXMT time will be spent on dedicated pointing of particular sources, it could host, with moderate additional resources a pair of X-ray telescopes, each with a photoelectric X-ray polarimeter in the focal plane. We present the design of the telescopes and the focal plane instrumentation and discuss the performance of this instrument to detect the degree and angle of linear polarization of some representative sources.
