Supersymmetry is an algebraic property of a class of quantum Hamiltonians, a guiding principle used in the development of nuclear theory and a concept that may underpin physics beyond the Standard Model. In condensed matter, any symmetry between bosonic and fermionic entities is usually strongly broken, as for the spin and charge sectors of the $t$-$J$ model describing the dynamics of fractionalized electrons in one-dimensional materials. While the triplet excitations of a quantum spin ladder in an applied magnetic field provide a close analogue of the $t$-$J$ chain, the supersymmetric nature of this system has not been explored. Here we perform neutron spectroscopy on the spin-ladder compounds (C$_5$D$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ and (C$_5$D$_{12}$N)$_2$CuCl$_4$ over a range of applied fields and temperatures, and apply matrix-product-state (MPS) methods to the ladder and equivalent chain models, to analyse the full, momentum-resolved dynamics of a single charge excitation in a bath of fractionalized spins. We find a dramatic difference in the effects of thermal fluctuations, where strong and coherent shifts of spectral weight at the zone edge contrast with a strict pole at the zone centre, whose persistence at all temperatures constitutes an observable consequence of supersymmetry in a quantum spin ladder.

The challenge of one-dimensional systems is to understand their physics beyond the level of known elementary excitations. By high-resolution neutron spectroscopy in a quantum spin ladder material, we probe the leading multiparticle excitation by characterizing the two-magnon bound state at zero field. By applying high magnetic fields, we create and select the singlet (longitudinal) and triplet (transverse) excitations of the fully spin-polarized ladder, which have not been observed previously and are close analogs of the modes anticipated in a polarized Haldane chain. The triggering mechanisms for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are still debated. Some of the most popular ones include galaxy interactions (IT) and disk instabilities (DI). Using an advanced semi analytic model (SAM) of galaxy formation, coupled to accurate halo occupation distribution modeling, we investigate the imprint left by each separate triggering process on the clustering strength of AGN at small and large scales. Our main results are as follows: i) DIs, irrespective of their exact implementation in the SAM, tend to fall short in triggering AGN activity in galaxies at the center of halos with $M_h>10^{13.5} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$. On the contrary, the IT scenario predicts abundance of active, central galaxies that generally agrees well with observations at every halo mass. ii) The relative number of satellite AGN in DIs at intermediate-to-low luminosities is always significantly higher than in IT models, especially in groups and clusters. The low AGN satellite fraction predicted for the IT scenario might suggest that different feeding modes could simultaneously contribute to the triggering of satellite AGN. iii) Both scenarios are quite degenerate in matching large-scale clustering measurements, suggesting that the sole average bias might not be an effective observational constraint. iv) Our analysis suggests the presence of both a mild luminosity and a more consistent redshift dependence in the AGN clustering, with AGN inhabiting progressively less massive dark matter halos as the redshift increases. The mass and structural evolution of massive galaxies is one of the hottest topics in galaxy formation. This is because it may reveal invaluable insights into the still debated evolutionary processes governing the growth and assembly of spheroids. However, direct comparison between models and observations is usually prevented by the so-called "progenitor bias", i.e., new galaxies entering the observational selection at later epochs, thus eluding a precise study of how pre-existing galaxies actually evolve in size. To limit this effect, we here gather data on high-redshift brightest group and cluster galaxies, evolve their (mean) host halo masses down to z=0 along their main progenitors, and assign as their "descendants" local SDSS central galaxies matched in host halo mass. At face value, the comparison between high redshift and local data suggests a noticeable increase in stellar mass of a factor of >2 since z~1, and of >2.5 in mean effective radius. We then compare the inferred stellar mass and size growth with those predicted by hierarchical models for central galaxies, selected at high redshifts to closely match the halo and stellar mass bins as in the data. Only hierarchical models characterized by very limited satellite stellar stripping and parabolic orbits are capable of broadly reproducing the stellar mass and size increase of a factor ~2-4 observed in cluster galaxies since z ~1. The stellar mass-halo mass relation is a key constraint in all semi-analytic, numerical, and semi-empirical models of galaxy formation and evolution. However, its exact shape and redshift dependence remain debated. Several recent works support a relation in the local Universe steeper than previously thought. Based on the comparisons with a variety of data on massive central galaxies, we show that this steepening holds up to z~1, for stellar masses Mstar>2e11 Msun. Specifically, we find significant evidence for a high-mass end slope of \beta>0.35-0.70, instead of the usual \beta~0.20-0.30 reported by a number of previous results. When including the independent constraints from the recent BOSS clustering measurements, the data, independent of any systematic errors in stellar masses, tend to favor a model with a very small scatter (< 0.15 dex) in stellar mass at fixed halo mass, in the redshift range z < 0.8 and for Mstar>3e11 Msun, suggesting a close connection between massive galaxies and host halos even at relatively recent epochs. Observations of colliding galaxy clusters with high relative velocity probe the tail of the halo pairwise velocity distribution with the potential of providing a powerful test of cosmology. As an example it has been argued that the discovery of the Bullet Cluster challenges standard $\Lambda$CDM model predictions. Halo catalogs from N-body simulations have been used to estimate the probability of Bullet-like clusters. However, due to simulation volume effects previous studies had to rely on a Gaussian extrapolation of the pairwise velocity distribution to high velocities. Here, we perform a detail analysis using the halo catalogs from the Dark Energy Universe Simulation Full Universe Runs (DEUS-FUR), which enables us to resolve the high-velocity tail of the distribution and study its dependence on the halo mass definition, redshift and cosmology. Building upon these results we estimate the probability of Bullet-like systems in the framework of Extreme Value Statistics. We show that the tail of extreme pairwise velocities significantly deviates from that of a Gaussian, moreover it carries an imprint of the underlying cosmology. We find the Bullet Cluster probability to be two orders of magnitude larger than previous estimates, thus easing the tension with the $\Lambda$CDM model. Finally, the comparison of the inferred probabilities for the different DEUS-FUR cosmologies suggests that observations of extreme interacting clusters can provide constraints on dark energy models complementary to standard cosmological tests., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, 15 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables

Multizeta values are numbers appearing in many different contexts. Unfortunately, their arithmetics remains mostly out of reach. In this article, we define a functional analogue of the algebra of multizetas values, namely the algebra of multitangent functions, which are 1- periodic functions defined by a process formally similar to multizeta values. We introduce here the fundamental notions of reduction into monotangent functions, projection onto multitangent functions and that of trifactorization, giving a way of writing a multitangent function in terms of Hurwitz multizeta functions. This explains why the multitangent algebra is a functional analogue of the algebra of multizeta values. We then discuss the most important algebraic and analytic properties of these functions and their consequences on multizeta values, as well as their regularization in the divergent case. Each property of multitangents has a pendant on the side of multizeta values. This allows us to propose new conjectures, which have been checked up to the weight 18.

In this short Survey we revisit the subject of local, identity-tangent diffeomorphisms of $\doC$ and their analytic invariants, under two viewpoints: that of explicit expansions, which necessarily involve multitangents and multizetas; and that of effective computation. Along the way, we stress the difference between the \textup{collectors} (pre-invariant but of one piece) and the \textup{connectors} (invariant but mutually unrelated). We also attempt to streamline the nomenclature and notations.

Multizeta values are real numbers which span a complicated algebra: there exist two different interacting products. A functional analog of these numbers is defined so as to obtain a better understanding of them, the Hurwitz multizeta functions, which span an algebra for which a precise description is wanted. In this note, we prove that the algebra of Hurwitz multizeta functions is a polynomial algebra.

We investigate the non-linear evolution of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) in the low-redshift matter power spectrum from the DEUS-FUR $\Lambda$CDM model simulation. This is the first cosmological N-body simulation encompassing the full observable cosmic volume, thus allowing cosmic variance limited predictions at BAO scales. We control the effect of numerical systematic errors using a series of large volume high-resolution simulations. The combined analysis allows us to measure the matter power spectrum between $z=0$ and $1$ to 1% over the entire BAO range, $0.03

Magnetic insulators have proven to be usable as quantum simulators for itinerant interacting quantum systems. In particular the compound (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ (short (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$) was shown to be a remarkable realization of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) and allowed to quantitatively test the TLL theory. Substitution weakly disorders this class of compounds and allows thus to use them to tackle questions pertaining to the effect of disorder in TLL as well, such as the formation of the Bose glass. As a first step in this direction we present in this paper a study of the properties of the related (Hpip)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$ compound. We determine the exchange couplings and compute the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat, using a finite temperature Density Matrix Renormalization group (DMRG) procedure. Inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the spin excitation spectrum of the Heisenberg $S=1/2$ ladder material (C$_7$H$_10$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ in its entirety, both in the gapped spin-liquid and the magnetic field induced Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid regimes. A fundamental change of the spin dynamics is observed between these two regimes. DMRG calculations quantitatively reproduce and help understand the observed commensurate and incommensurate excitations. The results validate long-standing quantum field theoretical predictions, but also test the limits of that approach.

The zero-field excitation spectrum of the strong-leg spin ladder (C$_7$H$_10$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (DIMPY) is studied with a neutron time-of-flight technique. The spectrum is decomposed into its symmetric and asymmetric parts with respect to the rung momentum and compared with theoretical results obtained by the density matrix renormalization group method. Additionally, the calculated dynamical correlations are shown for a wide range of rung and leg coupling ratios in order to point out the evolution of arising excitations, as e.g. of the two-magnon bound state from the strong to the weak coupling limit.

We have performed the first-ever numerical N- body simulation of the full observable universe (DEUS "Dark Energy Universe Simulation" FUR "Full Universe Run"). This has evolved 550 billion particles on an Adaptive Mesh Refinement grid with more than two trillion computing points along the entire evolutionary history of the universe and across 6 order of magnitudes length scales, from the size of the Milky Way to that of the whole observable universe. To date, this is the largest and most advanced cosmological simulation ever run. It provides unique information on the formation and evolution of the largest structure in the universe and an exceptional support to future observational programs dedicated to mapping the distribution of matter and galaxies in the universe. The simulation has run on 4752 (of 5040) thin nodes of BULL supercomputer CURIE, using more than 300 TB of memory for 10 million hours of computing time. About 50 PBytes of data were generated throughout the run. We investigate weakly coupled spin-1/2 ladders in a magnetic field. The work is motivated by recent experiments on the compound $\mathrm{(C_5H_{12}N)_2CuBr_4}$ (BPCB). We use a combination of numerical and analytical methods, in particular the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, to explore the phase diagram and the excitation spectra of such a system. We give detailed results on the temperature dependence of the magnetization and the specific heat, and the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate of single ladders. For coupled ladders, treating the weak interladder coupling within a mean field approach, we compute the transition temperature of triplet condensation and its corresponding antiferromagnetic order parameter. Existing experimental measurements are discussed and compared to our theoretical results. Furthermore we compute, using time dependent DMRG, the dynamical correlations of a single spin ladder. Our results allow to directly describe the inelastic neutron scattering cross section up to high energies. We focus on the evolution of the spectra with the magnetic field and compare their behavior for different couplings. The characteristic features of the spectra are interpreted using different analytical approaches such as the mapping onto a spin chain, a Luttinger liquid (LL) or onto a t-J model. For values of parameters for which such measurements exist, we compare our results to inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the compound BPCB and find excellent agreement. The strong-leg S=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder system (C7H10N)2CuBr4 is investigated using Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) calculations, inelastic neutron scattering, and bulk magneto-thermodynamic measurements. Measurements showed qualitative differences compared to the strong-rung case. A long-lived two-triplon bound state is confirmed to persist across most of the Brillouin zone in zero field. In applied fields, in the Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid phase, elementary excitations are attractive, rather than repulsive. In the presence of weak inter-ladder interactions, the strong-leg system is considerably more prone to 3-dimensional ordering., Comment: 4 pages 4 figures

We analyze the effects of different coupling anisotropies in spin-1/2 ladder on the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) shift. Combining a perturbative expression in the anisotropies with temperature dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group (T-DMRG) computation of the short range correlations, we provide the full temperature and magnetic field evolution of the ESR paramagnetic shift. We show that for well chosen parameters the ESR shift can be in principle used to extract quantitatively the anisotropies and, as an example, discuss the material $\mathrm{(C_5H_{12}N)_2CuBr_4}$ (BPCB).

Neutron diffraction is used to investigate the field-induced, antiferromagnetically ordered state in the two-leg spin-ladder material (Hpip)2CuBr4. This "classical" phase, a consequence of weak interladder coupling, is nevertheless highly unconventional: its properties are influenced strongly by the spin Luttinger-liquid state of the ladder subunits. We determine directly the order parameter (transverse magnetization), the ordering temperature, the spin structure, and the critical exponents around the transition. The phase diagram in temperature and magnetic field of the metal-organic, two-leg, spin-ladder compound (C5H12N)2CuBr4 is studied by measurements of the specific heat and the magnetocaloric effect. We demonstrate the presence of an extended spin Luttinger-liquid phase between two field-induced quantum critical points and over a broad range of temperature. Based on an ideal spin-ladder Hamiltonian, comprehensive numerical modelling of the ladder specific heat yields excellent quantitative agreement with the experimental data across the complete phase diagram., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, updated refs and minor changes to the text, version accepted for publication in Phys. We present a 14N nuclear magnetic resonance study of a single crystal of CuBr4(C5H12N)2 (BPCB) consisting of weakly coupled spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladders. Treating ladders in the gapless phase as Luttinger liquids, we are able to fully account for (i) the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 at 250 mK and for (ii) the phase transition to a 3D ordered phase occuring below 110 mK due to weak interladder exchange coupling. BPCB is thus an excellent model system where the possibility to control Luttinger liquid parameters in a continuous manner is demonstrated and Luttinger liquid model tested in detail over the whole fermion band., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, introduction and conclusion rewritten, published version
