Despite its amazing quantitative successes and contributions to revolutionary technologies, physics currently faces many unsolved mysteries ranging from the meaning of quantum mechanics to the nature of the dark energy that will determine the future of the Universe. It is clearly prohibitive for the general reader, and even the best informed physicists, to follow the vast number of technical papers published in the thousands of specialized journals. For this reason, we have asked the leading experts across many of the most important areas of physics to summarise their global assessment of some of the most important issues. In lieu of an extremely long abstract summarising the contents, we invite the reader to look at the section headings and their authors, and then to indulge in a feast of stimulating topics spanning the current frontiers of fundamental physics from The Future of Physics by William D Phillips and What characterises topological effects in physics? by Gerard t Hooft through the contributions of the widest imaginable range of world leaders in their respective areas. We compute the expected strain power spectrum and energy density parameter of the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) created by a network of long cosmic strings evolving during the whole cosmic history. As opposed to other studies, the contribution of cosmic string loops is discarded and our result provides a robust lower bound of the expected signal that is applicable to most string models. Our approach uses Nambu-Goto numerical simulations, running during the radiation, transition and matter eras, in which we compute the two-point unequal-time anisotropic stress correlators. These ones act as source terms in the linearised equations of motion for the tensor modes, that we solve using an exact Green's function integrator. Today, we find that the rescaled strain power spectrum $(k/\mathcal{H}_0)^2 \mathcal{P}_h$ peaks on Hubble scales and exhibits, at large wavenumbers, high frequency oscillations around a plateau of amplitude $100 (GU)^2$. In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. CMB-S4---the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment---is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth of structure to the present day. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, the quest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of the experimental design. This work details the development of a forecasting framework that includes a power-spectrum-based semi-analytic projection tool, targeted explicitly towards optimizing constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, in the presence of Galactic foregrounds and gravitational lensing of the CMB. This framework is unique in its direct use of information from the achieved performance of current Stage 2--3 CMB experiments to robustly forecast the science reach of upcoming CMB-polarization endeavors. The methodology allows for rapid iteration over experimental configurations and offers a flexible way to optimize the design of future experiments given a desired scientific goal. To form a closed-loop process, we couple this semi-analytic tool with map-based validation studies, which allow for the injection of additional complexity and verification of our forecasts with several independent analysis methods. We document multiple rounds of forecasts for CMB-S4 using this process and the resulting establishment of the current reference design of the primordial gravitational-wave component of the Stage-4 experiment, optimized to achieve our science goals of detecting primordial gravitational waves for $r > 0.003$ at greater than $5\sigma$, or, in the absence of a detection, of reaching an upper limit of $r < 0.001$ at $95\%$ CL., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, 9 tables, submitted to ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1907.04473

A precise measurement of the curvature of the Universe is of primeval importance for cosmology since it could not only confirm the paradigm of primordial inflation but also help in discriminating between different early Universe scenarios. The recent observations, while broadly consistent with a spatially flat standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) model, are showing tensions that still allow (and, in some cases, even suggest) a few percent deviations from a flat universe. In particular, the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background power spectra, assuming the nominal likelihood, prefer a closed universe at more than 99\% confidence level. While new physics could be in action, this anomaly may be the result of an unresolved systematic error or just a statistical fluctuation. Gravitational wave (GW) sources are an excellent probe of the luminosity distance and offer a novel measure of the Hubble constant, $H_0$. This estimation of $H_0$ from standard sirens requires an accurate estimation of the cosmological redshift of the host galaxy of the GW source, after correcting for its peculiar velocity. Absence of an accurate peculiar velocity correction affects both the precision and accuracy of the measurement of $H_0$, particularly for nearby sources. We propose a framework to incorporate such a peculiar velocity correction for GW sources. A first implementation of our method to the event GW170817 combined with the Very Large Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observation leads to a revised value of $H_0= 68.3^{+ 4.6}_{-4.5}$ km/s/Mpc. While this revision is minor, it demonstrates that our method makes it possible for obtaining an unbiased and accurate measurements of $H_0$ at the precision required for the standard siren cosmology., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. This paper discusses the science case for a sensitive spectro-polarimetric survey of the microwave sky. Such a survey would provide a tomographic and dynamic census of the three-dimensional distribution of hot gas, velocity flows, early metals, dust, and mass distribution in the entire Hubble volume, exploit CMB temperature and polarisation anisotropies down to fundamental limits, and track energy injection and absorption into the radiation background across cosmic times by measuring spectral distortions of the CMB blackbody emission. In addition to its exceptional capability for cosmology and fundamental physics, such a survey would provide an unprecedented view of microwave emissions at sub-arcminute to few-arcminute angular resolution in hundreds of frequency channels, a data set that would be of immense legacy value for many branches of astrophysics. We propose that this survey be carried-out with a large space mission featuring a broad-band polarised imager and a moderate resolution spectro-imager at the focus of a 3.5m aperture telescope actively cooled to about 8K, complemented with absolutely-calibrated Fourier Transform Spectrometer modules observing at degree-scale angular resolution in the 10-2000 GHz frequency range. Our current understanding of the Universe is established through the pristine measurements of structure in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the distribution and shapes of galaxies tracing the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. One key ingredient that underlies cosmological observables is that the field that sources the observed structure is assumed to be initially Gaussian with high precision. Nevertheless, a minimal deviation from Gaussianityis perhaps the most robust theoretical prediction of models that explain the observed Universe; itis necessarily present even in the simplest scenarios. In addition, most inflationary models produce far higher levels of non-Gaussianity. Cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing is an integrated effect whose kernel is greater than half the peak value in the range $1

Cosmological structures grow differently in theories of gravity which are modified as compared to Einstein's General relativity (GR). Cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuation patterns at the last scattering surface are lensed by these structures along the photon path to the observer. The observed CMB pattern therefore keeps trace of the growth history of structures. We show that observations of the CMB lensing bi-spectrum offer an interesting way to constrain deviations from GR in a broad class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity called "beyond Horndeski". We quantify how the constraints on generic parameters describing the deviations from GR depend on the effective multipole range of the analysis. Our results further indicate that an accurate nonlinear correction of the matter bi-spectrum in the modified gravity considered is necessary when the bi-spectrum is used to probe scales beyond a multipole $\ell_{\rm max} \gtrsim 1500$. We also found that the results are insensitive to details of the implementation of the screening mechanism, at very small scales. We finally demonstrate the potential of the lensing bi-spectrum to provide a blind reconstruction of the redshift evolution of our modified gravity parameters by combining the analysis of CMB and low-z source lensing data., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

The introduction of Dark Matter-neutrino interactions modifies the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) angular power spectrum at all scales, thus affecting the reconstruction of the cosmological parameters. Such interactions can lead to a slight increase of the value of $H_0$ and a slight decrease of $\sigma_8$, which can help reduce somewhat the tension between the CMB and lensing or Cepheids datasets. Here we show that it is impossible to solve both tensions simultaneously. While the 2015 Planck temperature and low multipole polarisation data combined with the Cepheids datasets prefer large values of the Hubble rate (up to $H_0 = 72.1^{+1.5}_{-1.7} \rm{km/s/Mpc}$, when $N_{\rm{eff}}$ is free to vary), the $\sigma_8$ parameter remains too large to reduce the $\sigma_8$ tension. Adding high multipole Planck polarization data does not help since this data shows a strong preference for low values of $H_0$, thus worsening current tensions, even though they also prefer smaller value of $\sigma_8$., Comment: 10 pages

We forecast the scientific capabilities to improve our understanding of cosmic inflation of CORE, a proposed CMB space satellite submitted in response to the ESA fifth call for a medium-size mission opportunity. The CORE satellite will map the CMB anisotropies in temperature and polarization in 19 frequency channels spanning the range 60-600 GHz. CORE will have an aggregate noise sensitivity of $1.7 \mu$K$\cdot \,$arcmin and an angular resolution of 5' at 200 GHz. We explore the impact of telescope size and noise sensitivity on the inflation science return by making forecasts for several instrumental configurations. This study assumes that the lower and higher frequency channels suffice to remove foreground contaminations and complements other related studies of component separation and systematic effects, which will be reported in other papers of the series "Exploring Cosmic Origins with CORE." We forecast the capability to determine key inflationary parameters, to lower the detection limit for the tensor-to-scalar ratio down to the $10^{-3}$ level, to chart the landscape of single field slow-roll inflationary models, to constrain the epoch of reheating, thus connecting inflation to the standard radiation-matter dominated Big Bang era, to reconstruct the primordial power spectrum, to constrain the contribution from isocurvature perturbations to the $10^{-3}$ level, to improve constraints on the cosmic string tension to a level below the presumptive GUT scale, and to improve the current measurements of primordial non-Gaussianities down to the $f_{NL}^{\rm local} < 1$ level. For all the models explored, CORE alone will improve significantly on the present constraints on the physics of inflation. We forecast the main cosmological parameter constraints achievable with the CORE space mission which is dedicated to mapping the polarisation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). CORE was recently submitted in response to ESA's fifth call for medium-sized mission proposals (M5). Here we report the results from our pre-submission study of the impact of various instrumental options, in particular the telescope size and sensitivity level, and review the great, transformative potential of the mission as proposed. Specifically, we assess the impact on a broad range of fundamental parameters of our Universe as a function of the expected CMB characteristics, with other papers in the series focusing on controlling astrophysical and instrumental residual systematics. In this paper, we assume that only a few central CORE frequency channels are usable for our purpose, all others being devoted to the cleaning of astrophysical contaminants. On the theoretical side, we assume LCDM as our general framework and quantify the improvement provided by CORE over the current constraints from the Planck 2015 release. We also study the joint sensitivity of CORE and of future Baryon Acoustic Oscillation and Large Scale Structure experiments like DESI and Euclid. Specific constraints on the physics of inflation are presented in another paper of the series. In addition to the six parameters of the base LCDM, which describe the matter content of a spatially flat universe with adiabatic and scalar primordial fluctuations from inflation, we derive the precision achievable on parameters like those describing curvature, neutrino physics, extra light relics, primordial helium abundance, dark matter annihilation, recombination physics, variation of fundamental constants, dark energy, modified gravity, reionization and cosmic birefringence. Tram et al. 2016 recently pointed out that power-law inflation in presence of a dark radiation component may relieve the 3.3 sigma tension which exists within standard LCDM between the determination of the local value of the Hubble constant by Riess et al. (2016) and the value derived from CMB anisotropy data by the Planck collaboration. In this comment, we simply point out that this interesting proposal does not help in solving the $\sigma_8$ tension between the Planck data and, e.g., the weak lensing measurements. Cosmic strings formed during inflation are expected to be either diluted over super-Hubble distances, i.e., invisible today, or to have crossed our past light cone very recently. We discuss the latter situation in which a few strings imprint their signature in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) Anisotropies after recombination. Being almost frozen in the Hubble flow, these strings are quasi static and evade almost all of the previously derived constraints on their tension while being able to source large scale anisotropies in the CMB sky. Using a local variance estimator on thousand of numerically simulated Nambu-Goto all sky maps, we compute the expected signal and show that it can mimic a dipole modulation at large angular scales while being negligible at small angles. Interestingly, such a scenario generically produces one cold spot from the thawing of a cosmic string loop. Mixed with anisotropies of inflationary origin, we find that a few strings of tension GU = O(1) x 10^(-6) match the amplitude of the dipole modulation reported in the Planck satellite measurements and could be at the origin of other large scale anomalies., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, uses jcappub. These lecture from the 100th Les Houches summer school on "Post-planck cosmology" of July 2013 discuss some aspects of the Planck mission, whose prime objective was a very accurate measurement of the temperature anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We announced our findings a few months ago, on March 21$^{st}$, 2013. I describe some of the relevant steps we took to obtain these results, sketching the measurement process, how we processed the data to obtain full sky maps at 9 different frequencies, and how we extracted the CMB temperature anisotropies map and angular power spectrum. I conclude by describing some of the main cosmological implications of the statistical characteristics of the CMB we found. By actively distorting the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) over our past light cone, cosmic strings are unavoidable sources of non-Gaussianity. Developing optimal estimators able to disambiguate a string signal from the primordial type of non-Gaussianity requires calibration over synthetic full sky CMB maps, which till now had been numerically unachievable at the resolution of modern experiments. In this paper, we provide the first high resolution full sky CMB map of the temperature anisotropies induced by a network of cosmic strings since the recombination. The map has about 200 million sub-arcminute pixels in the healpix format which is the standard in use for CMB analyses (Nside=4096). This premiere required about 800,000 cpu hours; it has been generated by using a massively parallel ray tracing method piercing through a thousands of state of art Nambu-Goto cosmic string numerical simulations which pave the comoving volume between the observer and the last scattering surface. We explicitly show how this map corrects previous results derived in the flat sky approximation, while remaining completely compatible at the smallest scales., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, uses RevTeX. A large sub-mm survey with Herschel will enable many exciting science opportunities, especially in an era of wide-field optical and radio surveys and high resolution cosmic microwave background experiments. The Herschel-SPIRE Legacy Survey (HSLS), will lead to imaging data over 4000 sq. degrees at 250, 350, and 500 micron. Major Goals of HSLS are: (a) produce a catalog of 2.5 to 3 million galaxies down to 26, 27 and 33 mJy (50% completeness; 5 sigma confusion noise) at 250, 350 and 500 micron, respectively, in the southern hemisphere (3000 sq. degrees) and in an equatorial strip (1000 sq. degrees), areas which have extensive multi-wavelength coverage and are easily accessible from ALMA. Two thirds of the of the sources are expected to be at z > 1, one third at z > 2 and about a 1000 at z > 5. (b) Remove point source confusion in secondary anisotropy studies with Planck and ground-based CMB data. (c) Find at least 1200 strongly lensed bright sub-mm sources leading to a 2% test of general relativity. We use Bayesian model selection techniques to test extensions of the standard flat LambdaCDM paradigm. Dark-energy and curvature scenarios, and primordial perturbation models are considered. To that end, we calculate the Bayesian evidence in favour of each model using Population Monte Carlo (PMC), a new adaptive sampling technique which was recently applied in a cosmological context. The Bayesian evidence is immediately available from the PMC sample used for parameter estimation without further computational effort, and it comes with an associated error evaluation. Besides, it provides an unbiased estimator of the evidence after any fixed number of iterations and it is naturally parallelizable, in contrast with MCMC and nested sampling methods. By comparison with analytical predictions for simulated data, we show that our results obtained with PMC are reliable and robust. The variability in the evidence evaluation and the stability for various cases are estimated both from simulations and from data. For the cases we consider, the log-evidence is calculated with a precision of better than 0.08. Using a combined set of recent CMB, SNIa and BAO data, we find inconclusive evidence between flat LambdaCDM and simple dark-energy models. A curved Universe is moderately to strongly disfavoured with respect to a flat cosmology. Using physically well-motivated priors within the slow-roll approximation of inflation, we find a weak preference for a running spectral index. A Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum is weakly disfavoured. With the current data, tensor modes are not detected; the large prior volume on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r results in moderate evidence in favour of r=0. [Abridged], Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. We use Nambu-Goto numerical simulations to compute the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies induced at arcminute angular scales by a network of cosmic strings in a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) expanding universe. We generate 84 statistically independent maps on a 7.2 degree field of view, which we use to derive basic statistical estimators such as the one-point distribution and two-point correlation functions. At high multipoles, the mean angular power spectrum of string-induced CMB temperature anisotropies can be described by a power law slowly decaying as \ell^{-p}, with p=0.889 (+0.001,-0.090) (including only systematic errors). Such a behavior suggests that a nonvanishing string contribution to the overall CMB anisotropies may become the dominant source of fluctuations at small angular scales. We therefore discuss how well the temperature gradient magnitude operator can trace strings in the context of a typical arcminute diffraction-limited experiment. Including both the thermal and nonlinear kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects, the Ostriker-Vishniac effect, and the currently favored adiabatic primary anisotropies, we find that, on such a map, strings should be ``eye visible,'' with at least of order ten distinctive string features observable on a 7.2 degree gradient map, for tensions U down to GU \simeq 2 x 10^{-7} (in Planck units). This suggests that, with upcoming experiments such as the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), optimal non-Gaussian, string-devoted statistical estimators applied to small-angle CMB temperature or gradient maps may put stringent constraints on a possible cosmic string contribution to the CMB anisotropies., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures. v2: matches published version, minor clarifications added, typo in Eq. I describe briefly the Cosmic Microwave Background (hereafter CMB) physics which explains why high accuracy observations of its spatial structure are a unique observational tool both for the determination of the global cosmological parameters and to constrain observationally the physics of the early universe. I also briefly survey the many experiments which have measured the anisotropies of the CMB and led to crucial advances in observational Cosmology. The somewhat frantic series of new results has recently culminated with the outcome of the WMAP satellite which confirmed earlier results, set new standards of accuracy, and suggested that the Universe may have reionised earlier than anticipated. This is the first paper of a series that describes the methods and basic results of the GalICS model (for Galaxies In Cosmological Simulations). GalICS is a hybrid model for hierarchical galaxy formation studies, combining the outputs of large cosmological N-body simulations with simple, semi-analytic recipes to describe the fate of the baryons within dark matter halos. The simulations produce a detailed merging tree for the dark matter halos including complete knowledge of the statistical properties arising from the gravitational forces. We intend to predict the overall statistical properties of galaxies, with special emphasis on the panchromatic spectral energy distribution emitted by galaxies in the UV/optical and IR/submm wavelength ranges. In this paper, we outline the physically motivated assumptions and key free parameters that go into the model, comparing and contrasting with other parallel efforts. We specifically illustrate the success of the model in comparison to several datasets, showing how it is able to predict the galaxy disc sizes, colours, luminosity functions from the ultraviolet to far infrared, the Tully--Fisher and Faber--Jackson relations, and the fundamental plane in the local universe. We also identify certain areas where the model fails, or where the assumptions needed to succeed are at odds with observations, and pay special attention to understanding the effects of the finite resolution of the simulations on the predictions made. As Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements are becoming more ambitious, the issue of foreground contamination is becoming more pressing. This is especially true at the level of sensitivity, angular resolution and for the sky coverage of the planned space experiments MAP and PLANCK. We present in this paper an indicator of the accuracy of the separation of the CMB anisotropies from those induced by foregrounds. Of course, the outcome will depend on the spectral and spatial characteristics of the sources of anisotropies. We thus start by summarising present knowledge on the spectral and spatial properties of Galactic foregrounds, point sources, and clusters of galaxies. This information comes in support of a modelling of the microwave sky including the relevant components. The accuracy indicator we introduce is based on a generalisation of the Wiener filtering method to multi-frequency, multi-resolution data. While the development and use of this indicator was prompted by the preparation of the scientific case for the \plancks satellite, it has broader application since it allows assessing the effective capabilities of an instrumental set-up once foregrounds are fully accounted for, with a view to enabling comparisons between different experimental arrangements. The real sky might well be different from the one assumed here, and the analysis method might not be in the end Wiener filtering, but this work still allow meaningful {\em comparative} studies. (Shortened) We use N-body simulations to investigate the structure and dynamical evolution of dark matter halos in galaxy clusters. Our sample consists of nine massive halos from an EdS universe with scale free power spectrum and n = -1. Halos are resolved by ~20000 particles each, with a dynamical resolution of 20-25 kpc. Large scale tidal fields are included up to L=150 Mpc using background particles. The halo formation process can be characterized by the alternation of two dynamical configurations: a merging phase and a relaxation phase, defined by their signature on the evolution of the total mass and rms velocity. Halos spend on average one 1/3 of their evolution in the merging phase and 2/3 in the relaxation phase. Using this definition, we study the density profiles and their change during the halo history. The average density profiles are fitted by the NFW analytical model with an rms residual of 17% between the virial radius Rv and 0.01 Rv. The Hernquist (1990) profiles fits the same halos with an rms residual of 26%. The trend with mass of the scale radius of these fits is marginally consistent with that found by Cole & Lacey (1996): in comparison our halos are more centrally concentrated, and the relation between scale radius and halo mass is slightly steeper. We find a moderately large scatter in this relation, due both to dynamical evolution within halos and to fluctuations in the halo population. We analyze the dynamical equilibrium of our halos using the Jeans' equation, and find that on average they are approximately in equilibrium within their virial radius. Finally, we find that the projected mass profiles of our simulated halos are in very good agreement with the profiles of three rich galaxy clusters derived from strong and weak gravitational lensing observations., Comment: 20 pages, Latex, with all figures included. We present a series of N-body experiments which confirm the reality of the previrialization effect. We also use weakly nonlinear perturbative approach to study the phenomenon. These two approaches agree when the rms density contrast, $\sigma$, is small; more surprisingly, they remain in agreement when $\sigma \approx 1$. When the slope of the initial power spectrum is $n>-1$, nonlinear tidal interactions slow down the growth of density fluctuations and the magnitude of the suppression increases when $n$ (i.e. the relative amount of small scale power) is increased. For $n<-1$ we see an opposite effect: the fluctuations grow more rapidly than in linear theory. The transition occurs at $n=-1$ when the weakly nonlinear correction to $\sigma$ is close to zero and the growth rate is close to linear. Our results resolve recent controversy between two N-body studies of previrialization. Peebles (1990) assumed $n=0$ and found strong evidence in support of previrialization, while Evrard \& Crone (1992), who assumed $n=-1$, reached opposite conclusions. As we show here, the initial conditions with $n=-1$ are rather special because the nonlinear effects nearly cancel out for that particular spectrum. In addition to our calculations for scale-free initial spectra, we show results for a more realistic spectrum of Peacock \& Dodds (1994). Its slope near the scale usually adopted for normalization is close to $-1$, so $\sigma$ is close to linear. We calculate the kurtosis of a large-scale density field which has undergone weakly non-linear gravitational evolution from arbitrary non-Gaussian initial conditions. It is well known that the weakly evolved {\twelveit skewness} is equal to its initial value plus the term induced by gravity, which scales with the rms density fluctuation in precisely the same way as for Gaussian initial conditions. As in the case of skewness, the evolved {\twelveit kurtosis} is equal to its initial value plus the contribution induced by gravity. The scaling of this induced contribution, however, turns out to be qualitatively different for Gaussian versus non-Gaussian initial conditions. We present a novel technique for calculating \Lya forest correlations based on cell counts. It is applied to the line lists from 7 QSOs observed at high resolution ($\Delta v<25\kms$). Two spectra (Q0055$-$259 and Q0014$+$813) appear to be sufficiently free of biases to obtain meaningful estimates. We find for both positive correlations, with a maximum of $0.5-1$, on the scale of $0.5-3 h^{-1}$ Mpc (comoving), or $100-600\kms$, which is consistent with the primordial power spectrum inferred from optically-selected galaxy surveys. Strong evidence for anti-correlation on the scale of $3-6 h^{-1}$ Mpc is also found. We present a novel technique for calculating the two-point autocorrelation function of the Lyman-alpha forest based on the relation between the two-point correlation function and the Neighbor Probability Distribution Functions. The technique appears to reduce the scatter in estimates of the correlation function by a factor of about two from the traditional pair-counting method. We apply the technique to the Lyman-alpha forest line lists determined from the spectra of seven z > 2 QSOs observed at high resolution ( < 25 km/s ). Of these, only two spectra, those of Q0055-259 and Q0014+813, appear to be sufficiently free of systematics to obtain meaningful estimates of the correlation function. We find positive correlations, with a maximum amplitude of 0.5 - 1, on the scale of 0.5 - 3 h^{-1} Mpc (comoving), or 100 - 600 km/s, in the forests of both QSOs. The technique also finds strong evidence for anticorrelation on the scale of 3 - 6 h^{-1} Mpc. The strength of the positive correlations is comparable to that predicted from the primordial power spectrum inferred from optically-selected galaxy redshift surveys. If the anticorrelations are physical, it becomes unclear whether the detected clustering is consistent with current models of structure formation with a homogeneous photoionizing UV metagalactic background. We derive the volume-averaged 2, 3, 4, and 5-point correlation functions from the moments of the Count probability distribution function of a redshift survey of IRAS galaxies, and find them all to be reasonably well-described by power laws. Weak systematic effects with the sample size provide evidence for stronger clustering of galaxies of higher luminosity on small scales. Nevertheless, remarkably tight relationships hold between the correlation functions of different order. In particular, the ``normalized" skewness defined by the ratio $S_3\equiv \bar{\xi_3} / \bar{\xi_2}^2$ varies at most weakly with scale in the range $0.1 < \bar{\xi_2} < 10$. That is, $S_3$ is close to constant ($=1.5\pm 0.5$) from weakly to strongly non-linear scales. Furthermore, we find that the void probability function obeys a scaling relation with density to great precision, in accord with the scale-invariance hypothesis ($\bar{\xi_N}\propto\bar{\xi_2}^{N-1}$)., Comment: 38 pages, postscript file (1.3 Megabytes) . We compare the anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation measured by the COBE experiment to the predictions of cosmic strings. We use an analytic model for the $\Delta T/T$ power spectrum that is based on our previous numerical simulations to show that the COBE results imply a value for the string mass per unit length, $\mu$ under the assumption that cosmic strings are the source of the measured anisotropy. We find $G\mu = 1.5\pm 0.5 \times 10^{-6}$ which is consistent with the value of $\mu$ thought to be required for cosmic strings to seed galaxy formation., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure (included).
