Orthorhombic pseudobrookites CoTi$_2$O$_5$ and FeTi$_2$O$_5$ have a low-symmetry crystal structure comprising magnetic Co$^{2+}$/Fe$^{2+}$ ions and nonmagnetic Ti$^{4+}$ ions, where the orbital-nondegenerate Co$^{2+}$/Fe$^{2+}$ ions form one-dimensional chains running along the orthorhombic $a$ axis. These compounds undergo an antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_N \sim$ 26 K for CoTi$_2$O$_5$ and $T_N \sim$ 40 K for FeTi$_2$O$_5$. Ultrasound velocity measurements on single crystals of CoTi$_2$O$_5$ and FeTi$_2$O$_5$ reveal that CoTi$_2$O$_5$ exhibits unusual elastic softness above $T_N$ in the symmetry-lowering elastic mode of $ac$-plane shear elastic modulus, inconsistent with the structural symmetry breaking caused by antiferromagnetic ordering at $T_N$. This suggests the presence of two distinct types of magnetostructural fluctuations above $T_N$ that should be a precursor to the symmetry-lowering lattice distortion at $T_N$. In contrast, FeTi$_2$O$_5$ exhibits either negligible or smaller elastic softness, indicating weaker spin-lattice coupling. These findings highlight CoTi$_2$O$_5$ and FeTi$_2$O$_5$ as unique spin-latticed-coupled frustrated systems with low crystal symmetry, where, while the exchange interactions are quasi-one-dimensional in nature, the frustration is released by further lowering the crystal symmetry through three-dimensional spin-lattice coupling, which is stronger in CoTi$_2$O$_5$ than in FeTi$_2$O$_5$., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Dynamical heterogeneity in which transitory local fluctuations occur in the conformation and dynamics of constituent particles, is essential for evolution of supercooled liquids into the glass state. Yet its microscopic spatiotemporal phenomenology has remained unobservable in virtually all supercooled glass forming liquids. Recent theoretical advances predict that corresponding dynamical heterogeneity could also occur in supercooled magnetic monopole fluids. The triangular-lattice system $\alpha$-RuI$_3$ is isostructural to the widely-studied $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ compound which was identified as a potential Kitaev system but exhibits, instead of spin liquid behaviour, a magnetically ordered zig-zag ground state which sets in below 14~K. Here we show experimentally that, in contrast, the spins in $\alpha$-RuI$_3$ remain dynamic down to at least 50~mK. No state of matter can be defined categorically by what it is not; yet spin liquids are often conjectured to exist based on the nonexistence of magnetic order as $T \to 0$. An emerging concept designed to circumvent this ambiguity is to categorically identify each spin liquid type by using its spectrum of spontaneous spin noise. Here we introduce such a spectroscopy to spin liquid studies by considering Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$. This is a spin liquid, but whether classical or quantum and in which specific state, are unknown. By enhancing the flux-noise spectrometry techniques introduced for magnetic monopole noise studies, here we measure the time and temperature dependence of spontaneous flux $\varPhi(t,T)$ and thus magnetization $M(t,T)$ of Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$ samples. The resulting power spectral density of magnetization noise $S_M(\omega,T)$ along with its correlation function $C_M(t,T)$, reveal intense spin fluctuations spanning frequencies $0.1\ \mathrm{Hz} \leq \omega/2\pi \leq 50\ \mathrm{kHz}$, and that $S_M(\omega,T)\propto \omega^{-\alpha(T)}$ with $0.84 < \alpha(T) < 1.04$. Predictions for quantum spin liquids yield a frequency-independent spin-noise spectrum, clearly inconsistent with this phenomenology However, when compared to Monte Carlo simulations for a 2D spiral spin liquid state that are accurately parameterized to describe Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$, comprehensive quantitative correspondence with the data including $S_M(\omega,T)$, $C_M(t,T)$ and magnetization variance $\sigma_M^2(T)$ fingerprint the state of Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$ as a spiral spin liquid., Comment: 42 pages, 4 main figures, 8 supplementary figures, 2 supplementary movies

A recent advance in the study of emergent magnetic monopoles was the discovery that monopole motion is restricted to dynamical fractal trajectories (J. Hall\'en et al, Science 378, 1218 (2022)) thus explaining the characteristics of magnetic monopole noise spectra (Dusad, R. et al. Nature 571, 234 (2019); Samarakoon, A. M. et al. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 119, e2117453119 (2022)). Here we apply this new theory to explore the dynamics of field-driven monopole currents, finding them comprised of two quite distinct transport processes: initially swift fractal rearrangements of local monopole configurations followed by conventional monopole diffusion. This theory also predicts a characteristic frequency dependence of the dissipative loss-angle for AC-field-driven currents. To explore these novel perspectives on monopole transport, we introduce simultaneous monopole current control and measurement techniques using SQUID-based monopole current sensors. For the canonical material Dy2Ti2O7, we measure ${\Phi}(t)$, the time-dependence of magnetic flux threading the sample when a net monopole current $J(t) = \dot{\Phi}(t)/\mu_0$ is generated by applying an external magnetic field $B_0(t)$. These experiments find a sharp dichotomy of monopole currents, separated by their distinct relaxation time-constants before and after $t \approx 600 {\mu}s$ from monopole current initiation. Application of sinusoidal magnetic fields $B_0(t) = Bcos({\omega}t)$ generates oscillating monopole currents whose loss angle ${\theta}(f)$ exhibits a characteristic transition at frequency $f \approx 1.8$ kHz over the same temperature range. Finally, the magnetic noise power is also dichotomic, diminishing sharply after $t \approx 600 {\mu}s$. This complex phenomenology represents a new form of heterogeneous dynamics generated by the interplay of fractionalization and local spin configurational symmetry.

Magnetostriction drives a rhombohedral distortion in the cubic rock salt antiferromagnet MnO at the N\'eel temperature $T_{N}=118$ K. As an unexpected consequence we show that this distortion acts to localize the site of an implanted muon due to the accompanying redistribution of electron density. This lifts the degeneracy between equivalent sites, resulting in a single observed muon precession frequency. Above $T_{N}$, the muon instead becomes delocalized around a network of equivalent sites. Our first-principles simulations based on Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory and molecular dynamics are consistent with our experimental data and help to resolve a long-standing puzzle regarding muon data on MnO, as well as having wider applicability to other magnetic oxides., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

KAgF$_3$ is a quasi one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet hosting a series of intriguing structural and magnetic transitions. Here we use powder neutron diffraction, $\mu$SR spectroscopy, and Density Functional Theory calculations to elucidate the low temperature magnetic phases. Below $T_{N1}=29$K we find that the material orders as an A-type antiferromagnet with an ordered moment of 0.47$\mu_{\rm B}$. Both neutrons and muons provide evidence for an intermediate phase at temperatures $T_{N1}

We present the results of a muon-spin relaxation ($\mu^{+}$SR) investigation of the crystalline organic radical compound 4-(2-benzimidazolyl)-1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl (HbimDTDA), in which we demonstrate the hysteretic magnetic switching of the system that takes place at $T = 274 \pm 11\,\mathrm{K}$ caused by a structural phase transition. Muon-site analysis using electronic structure calculations suggests a range of candidate muon stopping sites. The sites are numerous and similar in energy but, significantly, differ between the two structural phases of the material. Despite the difference in the sites, the muon remains a faithful probe of the transition, revealing a dynamically-fluctuating magnetically disordered state in the low-temperature structural phase. In contrast, in the high temperature phase the relaxation is caused by static nuclear moments, with rapid electronic dynamics being motionally narrowed from the muon spectra.

Recently a new class of quantum magnets, the so-called breathing pyrochlore spin systems, have attracted much attention due to their potential to host exotic emergent phenomena. Here, we present magnetometry, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, Muon-spin relaxation, and polarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed on high-quality single-crystal samples of breathing pyrochlore compound Ba3Yb2Zn5O11. We report on the first example of quantum coherence between the spins of muons and quadrupolar nuclei. We observe this effect in vanadium intermetallic compounds which adopt the A15 crystal structure, and whose members include all technologically dominant superconductors. The entangled states are extremely sensitive to the local structural and electronic environments through the electric field gradient at the quadrupolar nuclei. This case-study demonstrates that positive muons can be used as a quantum sensing tool to probe also structural and charge related phenomena in materials, even in the absence of magnetic order.

Combined resistance noise and muon-spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements of the ferromagnetic semiconductor HgCr$_2$Se$_4$ suggest a degree of magnetoelectric coupling and provide evidence for the existence of isolated magnetic polarons. These form at elevated temperatures and undergo a percolation transition with a drastic enhancement of the low-frequency 1/$f$-type charge fluctuations at the insulator-to-metal transition at $\sim 95 - 98$ K in the vicinity of the magnetic ordering temperature $T_C \sim 105 - 107$ K. Upon approaching the percolation threshold from above, the strikingly unusual dynamics of a distinct two-level fluctuator superimposed on the $1/f$ noise can be described by a slowing down of the dynamics of a nanoscale magnetic cluster, a magnetic polaron, when taking into account an effective radius of the polaron depending on the spin correlation length. Coinciding temperature scales found in $\mu$SR and noise measurements suggest changes in the magnetic dynamics over a wide range of frequencies and are consistent with the existence of large polarized and domain-wall-like regions at low temperatures, that result from the freezing of spin dynamics at the magnetic polaron percolation transition.

Yb-based triangular magnets have recently attracted attention as promising candidates to explore frustrated quantum magnetism. However, some candidates have turned out to have significant amounts of site disorder, which significantly affects the low-temperature magnetic behavior. To overcome this issue, Yb-based frustrated systems without structural disorder are required. In this paper, we report physical properties of two Yb-based triangular magnets Ba3YbB3O9 and Ba3YbB9O18, without structural disorder. Via magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and muon spin rotation measurements, we verified that both Ba3YbB3O9 and, particularly studied for the first time, Ba3YbB9O18 do not show long range magnetic order or glass-like spin freezing down to 0.28 K, but show typical paramagnetic behavior., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

The magnetic properties of the two isostructural molecule-based magnets, Ni(NCS)$_{2}$(thiourea)$_{2}$, $S$ = 1, [thiourea = SC(NH$_2$)$_2$] and Co(NCS)$_{2}$(thiourea)$_{2}$, $S$ = 3/2, are characterised using several techniques in order to rationalise their relationship with structural parameters and ascertain magnetic changes caused by substitution of the spin. Zero-field heat capacity and muon-spin relaxation measurements reveal low-temperature long-range ordering in both compounds, in addition to Ising-like ($D < 0$) single-ion anisotropy ($D_{\rm{Co}} \sim$ -100 K, $D_{\rm{Ni}} \sim$ -10 K). Crystal and electronic structure, combined with DC-field magnetometry, affirm highly quasi-one-dimensional behaviour, with ferromagnetic intrachain exchange interactions $J_{\rm{Co}}\approx+4$ K and $J_{\rm{Ni}}\sim+100$ K and weak antiferromagnetic interchain exchange, on the order of $J'$ $\sim-0.1$ K. Electron charge and spin-density mapping reveals through-space exchange as a mechanism to explain the large discrepancy in $J$-values despite, from a structural perspective, the highly similar exchange pathways in both materials. Both species can be compared to the similar compounds $M$Cl$_2$(thiourea)$_4$, $M$ = Ni(II) (DTN) and Co(II) (DTC), where DTN is know to harbour two magnetic field-induced quantum critical points. Direct comparison of DTN and DTC with the compounds studied here shows that substituting the halide Cl$^-$ ion, for the NCS$^-$ ion, results in a dramatic change in both the structural and magnetic properties., Comment: Main text: 13 pages - 11 figures, 2 tables. We performed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and muon spin relaxation ({\mu}SR) experiments to identify the magnetic ground state of the frustrated quantum A-site spinel, CuAl2O4. Our results verify that the ground state does not exhibit a long-range magnetic ordering, but a glass-like transition manifests at T*=2.3 K. However, the Gaussian shape and the weak longitudinal field dependence of {\mu}SR spectra below T* show that the ground state has dynamic spin fluctuations, distinct from those of conventional spin-glasses., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

We have performed transverse- and zero-field muon spin rotation/relaxation experiments, as well as magnetometry measurements, on samples of Fe1-xVxSe and their Li+NH3 intercalates Li0.6(NH2)0.2(NH3)0.8 Fe1-x Vx Se. We examine the low vanadium substitution regime: x = 0.005, 0.01, and 0.02. The intercalation reaction significantly increases the critical temperature (Tc) and the superfluid stiffness for all x. The nonintercalated samples all exhibit Tc = 8.5 K while the intercalated samples all show an enhanced Tc > 40 K. Vanadium substitution has a negligible effect on Tc, but seems to suppress the superfluid stiffness for the nonintercalated samples and weakly enhance it for the intercalated materials. The optimal substitution level for the intercalated samples is found to be x = 0.01, with Tc = 41 K and {\lambda}_{ab}(0) = 0.18 {\mu}m. The nonintercalated samples can be modeled with either a single d-wave superconducting gap or with an anisotropic gap function based on recent quasiparticle imaging experiments, whereas the intercalates display multigap nodal behavior which can be fitted using s + d- or d + d-wave models. Magnetism, likely from iron impurities, appears after the intercalation reaction and coexists and competes with the superconductivity. However, it appears that the superconductivity is remarkably robust to the impurity phase, providing an avenue to stably improve the superconducting properties of transition metal substituted FeSe., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The upper critical field of multiband superconductors is an important quantity that can reveal the details about the nature of the superconducting pairing. Here we experimentally map out the complete upper critical field phase diagram of a stoichiometric superconductor, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, up to 90T for different orientations of the magnetic field and at temperatures down to 4.2K. The upper critical fields are extremely large, reaching values close to ~3$T_c$ at the lowest temperature, and the anisotropy decreases dramatically with temperature leading to essentially isotropic superconductivity at 4.2K. We find that the temperature dependence of the upper critical field can be well described by a two-band model in the clean limit with band coupling parameters favouring intraband over interband interactions. The large Pauli paramagnetic effects together with the presence of the shallow bands is consistent with the stabilization of an FFLO state at low temperatures in this clean superconductor., Comment: to appear in Physical Review B (2020); 13 pages, 9 figures

The molecular coordination complex NiI$_2$(3,5-lut)$_4$ [where (3,5-lut) $=$ (3,5-lutidine) $=$ (C$_7$H$_9$N)] has been synthesized and characterized by several techniques including synchrotron X-ray diffraction, ESR, SQUID magnetometry, pulsed-field magnetization, inelastic neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation. Templated by the configuration of 3,5-lut ligands the molecules pack in-registry with the Ni--I$\cdots$I--Ni chains aligned along the $c$--axis. This arrangement leads to through-space I$\cdots$I magnetic coupling which is directly measured for the first time in this work. The net result is a near-ideal realization of the $S = 1$ Haldane chain with $J = 17.5~\rm{K}$ and energy gaps of $\Delta^{\parallel} = 5.3~{\rm K}$ $\Delta^{\perp} =7.7~{\rm K}$, split by the easy-axis single-ion anisotropy $D=-1.2~{\rm K}$. The ratio $D/J = -0.07$ affords one of the most isotropic Haldane systems yet discovered, while the ratio $\Delta_0/J = 0.40(1)$ (where $\Delta_0$ is the average gap size) is close to its ideal theoretical value, suggesting a very high degree of magnetic isolation of the spin chains in this material. The Haldane gap is closed by orientation-dependent critical fields $\mu_0H_{\rm c}^{\parallel} = 5.3~\rm{T}$ and $\mu_0H_{\rm c}^{\perp} = 4.3~\rm{T}$, which are readily accessible experimentally and permit investigations across the entirety of the Haldane phase, with the fully polarized state occurring at $\mu_0 H_{\rm s}^{\parallel}=46.0~\rm{T}$ and $\mu_0 H_{\rm s}^{\perp}=50.7~\rm{T}$. The results are explicable within the so-called fermion model, in contrast to other reported easy-axis Haldane systems. Zero-field magnetic order is absent down to $20~{\rm mK}$ and emergent end-chain effects are observed in the gapped state, as evidenced by detailed low-temperature measurements., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures plus supporting information

Although low-dimensional $S = 1$ antiferromagnets remain of great interest, difficulty in obtaining high-quality single crystals of the newest materials hinders experimental research in this area. Polycrystalline samples are more readily produced, but there are inherent problems in extracting the magnetic properties of anisotropic systems from powder data. Following a discussion of the effect of powder-averaging on various measurement techniques, we present a methodology to overcome this issue using thermodynamic measurements. In particular we focus on whether it is possible to characterise the magnetic properties of polycrystalline, anisotropic samples using readily available laboratory equipment. We test the efficacy of our method using the magnets [Ni(H$_{2}$O)$_{2}$(3,5-lutidine)$_{4}$](BF$_{4}$)$_{2}$ and Ni(H$_{2}$O)$_{2}$(acetate)$_{2}$(4-picoline)$_{2}$, which have negligible exchange interactions, as well as the antiferromagnet [Ni(H$_{2}$O)$_{2}$(pyrazine)$_{2}$](BF$_{4}$)$_{2}$, and show that we are able to extract the anisotropy parameters in each case. The results obtained from the thermodynamic measurements are checked against electron-spin resonance and neutron diffraction. We also present a density functional method, which incorporates spin-orbit coupling to estimate the size of the anisotropy in [Ni(H$_{2}$O)$_{2}$(pyrazine)$_{2}$](BF$_{4}$)$_{2}$.

We have used muon-spin rotation, heat capacity and x-ray diffraction measurements in combination with density functional theory and dipole field calculations to investigate the crystal and magnetic structure of FeTi$_2$O$_5$. We observe a long range ordered state below $T_{\rm N}$=41.8(5) K with indications of significant correlations existing above this temperature. We determine candidate muon stopping sites in this compound, and find that our data are consistent with the spin Jahn-Teller driven antiferromagnetic ground state with $\boldsymbol{k}$=(1/2,1/2,0) reported for CoTi$_2$O$_5$ ($T_{\rm N}$=26 K). By comparing our data with calculated dipolar fields we can restrict the possible moment size and directions of the Fe$^{2+}$ ions.

Magnetic monopoles are hypothetical elementary particles exhibiting quantized magnetic charge $m_0=\pm(h/\mu_0e)$ and quantized magnetic flux $\Phi_0=\pm h/e$. A classic proposal for detecting such magnetic charges is to measure the quantized jump in magnetic flux $\Phi$ threading the loop of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) when a monopole passes through it. Naturally, with the theoretical discovery that a plasma of emergent magnetic charges should exist in several lanthanide-pyrochlore magnetic insulators, including Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, this SQUID technique was proposed for their direct detection. Experimentally, this has proven extremely challenging because of the high number density, and the generation-recombination (GR) fluctuations, of the monopole plasma. Recently, however, theoretical advances have allowed the spectral density of magnetic-flux noise $S_{\Phi}(\omega,T)$ due to GR fluctuations of $\pm m_*$ magnetic charge pairs to be determined. These theories present a sequence of strikingly clear predictions for the magnetic-flux noise signature of emergent magnetic monopoles. Here we report development of a high-sensitivity, SQUID based flux-noise spectrometer, and consequent measurements of the frequency and temperature dependence of $S_{\Phi}(\omega,T)$ for Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ samples. Virtually all the elements of $S_{\Phi}(\omega,T)$ predicted for a magnetic monopole plasma, including the existence of intense magnetization noise and its characteristic frequency and temperature dependence, are detected directly. Moreover, comparisons of simulated and measured correlation functions $C_{\Phi}(t)$ of the magnetic-flux noise $\Phi(t)$ imply that the motion of magnetic charges is strongly correlated because traversal of the same trajectory by two magnetic charges of same sign is forbidden.

We present a comprehensive study of the critical current densities and the superconducting vortex phase diagram in the stoichiometric superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ which has a critical temperature of 35 K. We performed detailed magnetization measurements both of high quality single crystals for different orientations in an applied magnetic field up to 16 T and for a powder sample. We find an extremely large critical current density, Jc, up to 10$^8$ A/cm2 for single crystals when H||(ab) at 5 K, which remains robust in fields up to 16 T, being the largest of any other iron-based superconductor. The critical current density is reduced by a factor 10 in single crystals when H||c at 5 K and significantly suppressed by the presence of grain boundaries in the powder sample. We also observe the presence of the fishtail effect in the magnetic hysteresis loops of single crystals when H||c. The flux pinning force density and the pinning parameters suggest that the large critical current could be linked to the existence of point core and surface pinning. Based on the vortex phase diagram and the large critical current densities, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is now established as a potential iron-based superconductor candidate for practical applications., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

We have used neutron powder diffraction to solve the magnetic structure of orthorhombic CoTi$_2$O$_5$, showing that the long-range ordered state below 26 K identified in our muon-spin rotation experiments is antiferromagnetic with propagation vector ${\bf k}=(\pm \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}, 0)$ and moment of 2.72(1)$\mu_{\rm B}$ per Co$^{2+}$ ion. This long range magnetic order is incompatible with the experimentally determined crystal structure because the imposed symmetry completely frustrates the exchange coupling. We conclude that the magnetic transition must therefore be associated with a spin Jahn-Teller effect which lowers the structural symmetry and thereby relieves the frustration. These results show that CoTi$_2$O$_5$ is a highly unusual low symmetry material exhibiting a purely spin-driven lattice distortion critical to the establishment of an ordered magnetic ground state., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We present the results of a muon-spin spectroscopy investigation of GaV$_4$S$_{8-y}$Se$_{y}$ with $y=0, 2, 4$ and 8. Zero-field measurements suggest that GaV$_{4}$Se$_{8}$ and GaV$_{4}$S$_{8}$ have distinct magnetic ground states, with the latter material showing an anomalous temperature-dependence of the local magnetic field. It is not possible to evolve the magnetic state continuously between these two systems, with the intermediate $y=2$ and $4$ materials showing glassy magnetic behaviour at low temperature. The skyrmion lattice (SkL) phase is evident in the $y=0$ and 8 materials through an enhanced response of the muon-spin relaxation to the emergent dynamics that accompany the SkL. For our polycrystalline samples of GaV$_4$Se$_{8}$, this enhanced dynamic response is confined to a smaller region of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram than the previous reports of the SkL in single crystals.

We have determined the superconducting and magnetic properties of four samples of Lu$_x$Zr$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$ ($x=0.04$, $0.07$, $0.17$, and $0.8$) using muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) and magnetometry measurements. We observed a strong magnetic signal in both the $\mu$SR and magnetometry data in one sample ($x=0.07$), likely caused by the formation of static moments of size $\approx 1\,\mu_{\rm B}$ due to a clustering effect of the Lu$^{3+}$ ions. In all other samples, we find only a small magnetic signal in the $\mu$SR data thought to originate from boron nuclei in the B$_{12}$ cages. The superconductivity is found to evolve with $x$, with a decrease in $x$ resulting in an increase in critical temperature and a decrease of the penetration depth. Most remarkably, we find the formation of nodes in the superconducting gap for $x \leq 0.17$, providing a new example of an $s$-to-$d$-wave crossover in a superconductor., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We report the results of a muon-spin rotation ($\mu$SR) experiment to determine the superconducting ground state of the iron-based superconductor CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with $T_{\rm c} \approx 28.3\,$K. This compound is related to the fully-gapped superconductor CaCsFe$_4$As$_4$, but here the Ca-containing spacer layer is replaced with one containing Ca$_2$F$_2$. The temperature evolution of the penetration depth strongly suggests the presence of line nodes and is best modelled by a system consisting of both an $s$- and a $d$-wave gap. We also find a potentially magnetic phase which appears below $\approx 10\,$K but does not appear to compete with the superconductivity. This compound contains the largest alkali atom in this family of superconductors and our results yield a value for the in-plane penetration depth of $\lambda_{ab}(T=0)=423(5)\,$nm., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

We present a proposal for applying nanoscale magnetometry to the search for magnetic monopoles in the spin ice materials holmium and dysprosium titanate. Employing Monte Carlo simulations of the dipolar spin ice model, we find that when cooled to below $1.5\,$K these materials exhibit a sufficiently low monopole density to enable the direct observation of magnetic fields from individual monopoles. At these temperatures we demonstrate that noise spectroscopy can capture the intrinsic fluctuations associated with monopole dynamics, allowing one to isolate the qualitative effects associated with both the Coulomb interaction between monopoles and the topological constraints implied by Dirac strings. We describe in detail three different nanoscale magnetometry platforms (muon spin rotation, nitrogen vacancy defects, and nanoSQUID arrays) that can be used to detect monopoles in these experiments, and analyze the advantages of each., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

LiOsO$_3$ is the first example of a new class of material called a ferroelectric metal. We performed zero-field and longitudinal-field $\mu$SR, along with a combination of electronic structure and dipole field calculations, to determine the magnetic ground state of LiOsO$_3$. We find that the sample contains both static Li nuclear moments and dynamic Os electronic moments. Below $\approx 0.7\,$K, the fluctuations of the Os moments slow down, though remain dynamic down to 0.08$\,$K. We expect this could result in a frozen-out, disordered ground state at even lower temperatures., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

We study by means of bulk and local probes the d-metal alloy Ni$_{1-x}$V$_x$ close to the quantum critical concentration, $x_c \approx 11.6\%$, where the ferromagnetic transition temperature vanishes. The magnetization-field curve in the ferromagnetic phase takes an anomalous power-law form with a nonuniversal exponent that is strongly $x$-dependent and mirrors the behavior in the paramagnetic phase. Muon spin rotation experiments demonstrate inhomogeneous magnetic order and indicate the presence of dynamic fluctuating magnetic clusters. We have determined the superconducting and magnetic properties of a hydrothermally synthesized powder sample of tetragonal FeS using muon spin rotation ({\mu}SR). The superconducting properties are entirely consistent with those of a recently published study, showing fully gapped behavior and giving a penetration depth of {\lambda}_{ab} = 204(3) nm. However, our zero-field {\mu}SR data are rather different and indicate the presence of a small, non-superconducting magnetic phase within the sample. These results highlight that sample-to-sample variations in magnetism can arise in hydrothermally prepared phases, but interestingly the superconducting behavior is remarkably insensitive to these variations., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Using a mixed-ligand synthetic scheme, we create a family of quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnets, namely, [Cu(HF$_2$)(pyz)$_2$]ClO$_4$ [pyz = pyrazine], [Cu$L_2$(pyz)$_2$](ClO$_4$)$_2$ [$L$ = pyO = pyridine-N-oxide and 4-phpyO = 4-phenylpyridine-N-oxide. These materials are shown to possess equivalent two-dimensional [Cu(pyz)$_2$]$^{2+}$ nearly square layers, but exhibit interlayer spacings that vary from 6.5713~\AA ~to 16.777~\AA, as dictated by the axial ligands. We present the structural and magnetic properties of this family as determined via x-ray diffraction, electron-spin resonance, pulsed- and quasistatic-field magnetometry and muon-spin rotation, and compare them to those of the prototypical two-dimensional magnetic polymer Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$. We find that, within the limits of the experimental error, the two-dimensional, {\it intralayer} exchange coupling in our family of materials remains largely unaffected by the axial ligand substitution, while the observed magnetic ordering temperature decreases slowly with increasing layer separation. Despite the structural motifs common to this family and Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$, the latter has significantly stronger two-dimensional exchange interactions and hence a higher ordering temperature. We discuss these results, as well as the mechanisms that might drive the long-range order in these materials, in terms of departures from the ideal $S=1/2$ two-dimensional square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. In particular, we find that both spin exchange anisotropy in the intralayer interaction and interlayer couplings (exchange, dipolar, or both) are needed to account for the observed ordering temperatures, with the intralayer anisotropy becoming more important as the layers are pulled further apart., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

We investigate a magnetic hysteresis loop with a remanent moment that couples to electric polarization to create coupled hysteretic multiferroic behavior in Lu2MnCoO6. Measurements of elastic neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation, and micro-Hall magnetometry demonstrate an unusual mechanism for the magnetic hysteresis, namely the hysteretic evolution of a microscopic magnetic order, and not classic ferromagnetic domain effects. We show how the frustrated spin system evolves from antiferromagnetism with an incommensurate long-wavelength modulation and strong fluctuations towards a net magnetism. Hydrothermal synthesis is described of layered lithium iron selenide hydroxides Li1-xFex(OH)Fe1-ySe (x ~ 0.2; 0.02 < y < 0.15) with a wide range of iron site vacancy concentrations in the iron selenide layers. This iron vacancy concentration is revealed as the only significant compositional variable and as the key parameter controlling the crystal structure and the electronic properties. Single crystal X-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements are used to demonstrate that superconductivity at temperatures as high as 40 K is observed in the hydrothermally synthesised samples when the iron vacancy concentration is low (y < 0.05) and when the iron oxidation state is reduced slightly below +2, while samples with a higher vacancy concentration and a correspondingly higher iron oxidation state are not superconducting. The importance of combining a low iron oxidation state with a low vacancy concentration in the iron selenide layers is emphasised by the demonstration that reductive post-synthetic lithiation of the samples turns on superconductivity with critical temperatures exceeding 40 K by displacing iron atoms from the Li1-xFex(OH) reservoir layer to fill vacancies in the selenide layer, Comment: 7 pages supplementary material available from Journal, Inorganic Chemistry 2015

We have studied the magnetic properties and spin-dynamics of the structurally-ordered double perovskite Sr$_2$CoOsO$_6$. Our neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation and ac-susceptibility measurements reveal two antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases on cooling from room temperature down to 2 K. In the first AFM phase, with transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}=108$ K, cobalt (3$d^7$, $S=3/2$) and osmium (5$d^2$, $S=1$) moments fluctuate dynamically, while their \textit{average} effective moments undergo long-range order. In the second AFM phase with $T_{\mathrm{N}}=67$ K, cobalt moments first become frozen and induce a noncollinear spin-canted AFM state, while dynamically fluctuating osmium moments are later frozen into a randomly canted state at $T\approx 5$ K. Our \textit{ab initio} calculations indicate that the effective exchange coupling between cobalt and osmium sites is rather weak, so that cobalt and osmium sublattices exhibit different ground states and spin-dynamics, making Sr$_2$CoOsO$_6$ distinct from previously reported double-perovskite compounds., Comment: Accepted by Phys. The recent discovery of high temperature superconductivity in a layered iron arsenide has led to an intensive search to optimize the superconducting properties of iron-based superconductors by changing the chemical composition of the spacer layer that is inserted between adjacent anionic iron arsenide layers. Until now, superconductivity has only been found in compounds with a cationic spacer layer consisting of metal ions: Li+, Na+, K+, Ba2+ or a PbO-type or perovskite-type oxide layer. Electronic doping is usually necessary to control the fine balance between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. Superconductivity has also been reported in FeSe, which contains neutral layers similar in structure to those found in the iron arsenides but without the spacer layer. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of Lix(NH2)y(NH3)1-yFe2Se2 (x ~0.6 ; y ~ 0.2), with lithium ions, lithium amide and ammonia acting as the spacer layer, which exhibits superconductivity at 43(1) K, higher than in any FeSe-derived compound reported so far and four times higher at ambient pressure than the transition temperature, Tc, of the parent Fe1.01Se. We have determined the crystal structure using neutron powder diffraction and used magnetometry and muon-spin rotation data to determine the superconducting properties. Gaining control of the building blocks of magnetic materials and thereby achieving particular characteristics will make possible the design and growth of bespoke magnetic devices. While progress in the synthesis of molecular materials, and especially coordination polymers, represents a significant step towards this goal, the ability to tune the magnetic interactions within a particular framework remains in its infancy. Here we demonstrate a chemical method which achieves dimensionality selection via preferential inhibition of the magnetic exchange in an $S=1/2$ antiferromagnet along one crystal direction, switching the system from being quasi-two- to quasi-one-dimensional while effectively maintaining the nearest-neighbour coupling strength., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We present the results of a muon-spin relaxation (muSR) investigation into magnetic ordering in several families of layered quasi-two-dimensional molecular antiferromagnets based on transition metal ions such as S=1/2 Cu2+ bridged with organic ligands such as pyrazine. In many of these materials magnetic ordering is difficult to detect with conventional magnetic probes. In contrast, muSR allows us to identify ordering temperatures and study the critical behavior close to T_N . Combining this with measurements of in-plane magnetic exchange J and predictions from quantum Monte Carlo simulations we may assess the degree of isolation of the 2D layers through estimates of the effective inter-layer exchange coupling and in-layer correlation lengths at T_N . We also identify the likely metal-ion moment sizes and muon stopping sites in these materials, based on probabilistic analysis of the magnetic structures and of muon-fluorine dipole-dipole coupling in fluorinated materials., Comment: Text and figures as published in Physical Review B

The magnetic ground states of the isostructural double perovskites Ba$_2$NaOsO$_6$ and Ba$_2$LiOsO$_6$ are investigated with muon-spin rotation. In Ba$_2$NaOsO$_6$ long-range magnetic order is detected via the onset of a spontaneous muon-spin precession signal below $T_{\mathrm{c}}=7.2\pm 0.2\;\mathrm{K}$, while in Ba$_2$LiOsO$_6$ a static but spatially-disordered internal field is found below 8 K. A novel probabilistic argument is used to show from the observed precession frequencies that the magnetic ground state in Ba$_2$NaOsO$_6$ is most likely to be low-moment ($\approx 0.2$\,$\mu_{\rm B}$) ferromagnetism and not canted antiferromagnetism. Ba$_2$LiOsO$_6$ is antiferromagnetic and we find a spin-flop transition at 5.5\,T. A reduced osmium moment is common to both compounds, probably arising from a combination of spin-orbit coupling and frustration., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We derive an analytical expression which allows efficient computation of the effect of all the Fermi surface trajectories induced by a combination of Bragg scattering and magnetic breakdown on the in-plane components of the resistivity tensor. The particular network of coupled orbits which we consider was first formulated by Falicov and Sievert, who studied the problem numerically. Our approach, based upon a method used previously to derive an analytical solution for interlayer transport, allows us to show that the conductivity tensor can be written as a sum of a matrix representing the effect of total magnetic breakdown and one representing a combination of complex electronic trajectories, and we find a compact expression for the in-plane components of the resistivity tensor that can be evaluated straightforwardly., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Theoretically, communities at or near their equilibrium species number resist entry of new species. Such 'biotic resistance' recently has been questioned because of successful entry of alien species into diverse natural communities. Data on 10,409 naturalizations of 5350 plant species over 16 sites dispersed globally show exponential distributions for both species over sites and sites over number of species shared. These exponentials signal a statistical mechanics of species distribution, assuming two conditions. First, species and sites are equivalent, either identical ('neutral'), or so complex that the chance a species is in the right place at the right time is vanishingly small ('idiosyncratic'); the range of species and sites in our data disallows a neutral explanation. Secondly, the total number of naturalisations is fixed in any era by a 'regulator'. Previous correlation of species naturalization rates with net primary productivity over time suggests that regulator is related to productivity. We conclude that biotic resistance is a moving ceiling, with resistance controlled by productivity. The general observation that the majority of species occur naturally at only a few sites but only a few at many now has a quantitative [exponential] character, offering the study of species' distributions a previously unavailable rigor., Comment: 30 pages, including 4 figures, 1 table and 4 appendices

Using a combination of neutron, muon and synchrotron techniques we show how the magnetic state in NaFeAs can be tuned into superconductivity by replacing Fe by either Co or Ni. Electron count is the dominant factor, since Ni-doping has double the effect of Co-doping for the same doping level. We follow the structural, magnetic and superconducting properties as a function of doping to show how the superconducting state evolves, concluding that the addition of 0.1 electrons per Fe atom is sufficient to traverse the superconducting domain, and that magnetic order coexists with superconductivity at doping levels less than 0.025 electrons per Fe atom., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

We have developed an analytical model of angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMROs) in a quasi-two-dimensional metal in which magnetic breakdown occurs. The model takes account of all the contributions from quasiparticles undergoing both magnetic breakdown and Bragg reflection at each junction and allows extremely efficient simulation of data which can be compared with recent experimental results on the organic metal kappa-ET2Cu(NCS)2. AMROs resulting from both closed and open orbits emerge naturally at low field, and the model enables the transition to breakdown-AMROs with increasing field to be described in detail., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We have studied the interlayer resistivity of the prototypical quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ as a function of temperature, current and magnetic field, within the superconducting state. We find a region of non-zero resistivity whose properties are strongly dependent on magnetic field and current density. There is a crossover to non-Ohmic conduction below a temperature that coincides with the 2D vortex solid -- vortex liquid transition. We interpret the behaviour in terms of a model of current- and thermally-driven phase slips caused by the diffusive motion of the pancake vortices which are weakly-coupled in adjacent layers, giving rise to a finite interlayer resistance., Comment: Four pages, three figures

Using X-band pulsed electron spin resonance, we report the intrinsic spin-lattice ($T_1$) and phase coherence ($T_2$) relaxation times in molecular nanomagnets for the first time. In Cr$_7M$ heterometallic wheels, with $M$ = Ni and Mn, phase coherence relaxation is dominated by the coupling of the electron spin to protons within the molecule. In deuterated samples $T_2$ reaches 3 $\mu$s at low temperatures, which is several orders of magnitude longer than the duration of spin manipulations, satisfying a prerequisite for the deployment of molecular nanomagnets in quantum information applications., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, in press at Physical Review Letters

We have introduced defects into clean samples of the organic superconductor $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(SCN)$_2$ in order to determine their effect on the temperature dependence of the conductivity and the critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$. We find a violation of Matthiessen's rule that can be explained by a model of the conductivity involving a defect-assisted interlayer channel which acts in parallel with the band-like conductivity. We observe an unusual dependence of $T_{\rm c}$ on residual resistivity which is not consistent with the generalised Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory for an order parameter with a single component, providing an important constraint on models of the superconductivity in this material.
