In the present work, we study the structural, electronic and optical properties of Sodium Based Cubic Fluoro-perovskites: NaBF$_3$ (B= Ca, Mg or Zn) using DFT and TDDFT methods. We performed the density functional theory DFT calculations under the mBJ-GGA approximation. In addition, we applied the norm-conserving pseudo-potentials without spin-orbit coupling (SOC) approximations. In addition, we used the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof generalized gradient approximation (GGA-PBE) to deduce the physical properties of these alloys. Moreover, the Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) method has been performed to deduce the optical properties, in an excited state, of the studied Sodium Based Cubic Fluoro-perovskites: NaBF$_3$ (B= Ca, Mg or Zn) materials.

To investigate the physical characteristics of the half-Heusler BaHgSn molecule, we used theoretical calculations within the Density Functional Theory (DFT) framework utilizing the LSDA+mBJ technique in this study. Using the optimal lattice parameters, we discover that half-Heusler BaHgSn exhibits a Dirac semimetal behavior with a band gap of 0.1 eV. Thomas Charpin's numerical first-principles calculation approach was applied to determine the elastic constants of hexagonal BaHgSn alloys. The material's optical characteristics verified its prospective use in infrared-visible devices. According to a thermo-electric properties analysis, at 20x10^18 {\Omega}-1.m-1.s-1, the electrical conductivity reaches its maximum after increasing gradually up to 500 K. Compared to other compounds, these results indicate that BaHgSn has potential for use in opto-electronic and thermo-electric devices.

Gadolinium stand as the favored choice among magnetic refrigerant materials for numerous active magnetic regenerator (AMR) prototypes due to its remarkable ability to exhibit a substantial change in magnetic entropy. This unique characteristic arises from its status as one of the elemental ferromagnets with a high Curie temperature, closely aligning with room temperature conditions, and undergoing a second-order magnetic phase transition. In this comprehensive study, we employ density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of both Gadolinium bulk and film configurations. Our primary objective is to gain a deeper understanding of the intricate physics underlying the intriguing magnetocaloric features observed in Gadolinium. This investigation provides valuable insights into the potential applications and the broader implications of Gadolinium in the realm of magnetic refrigeration technology.

In this article, we examine the structure and the electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of ZnTe before and after doping with the transition metal Mn. The ab initio calculations of this compound were performed using the full potential linearized extended full potential planar waveform (FP-LAPW) in the context of density functional theory (DFT) implemented in the Wien2K code. The potential for exchange and correlation was addressed by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) approximation. The electronic properties show that the ZnTe material exhibits semiconductor behavior before doping. As a result, it becomes semimetal after doping. The findings attained by Monte Carlo simulations display that the ZnMnTe material goes from an antiferromagnetic phase to the paramagnetic phase at the Neel temperature value TN =159.31 K.

In this study, we carried out an investigation of the EuCoA$_2$As$_2$ compound, focusing on its various physical properties. Our analysis covered the structural, magnetic, electronic, optical, thermodynamic and thermoelectric characteristics of this compound. To carry out this study, we used density functional theory (DFT) implemented in the Wien2k software package. To determine the exchange-correlation potential, we used the GGA-PBE (Perdew, Burke and Ernzerhof) approach, taking spin-orbit coupling (SOC) into account. Our results indicate that the EuCoA$_2$As$_2$ compound exhibits metallic behavior. In addition, we have determined that the compound's stable ground state is the ferromagnetic (FM) phase. We have also calculated the Debye temperature and the Gr\"uneisen parameter. In addition, we evaluated various optical properties, including electron energy loss, absorption coefficient, real and imaginary dielectric tensors, and real and imaginary optical conductivity. We found that the compound has excellent absorption characteristics in the low and mid ultraviolet (UV) spectra. In addition, we investigated the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, electronic conductivity and thermal conductivity of the lattice. The results revealed that the compound exhibits n-type behavior, with negative values for the Seebeck coefficient. These results are analyzed in detail and provide valuable information on the properties of the EuCoA$_2$As$_2$ compound. With a prevalence of 5 to 50%, Dry Eye Disease (DED) is one of the leading reasons for ophthalmologist consultations. The diagnosis and quantification of DED usually rely on ocular surface analysis through slit-lamp examinations. However, evaluations are subjective and non-reproducible. To improve the diagnosis, we propose to 1) track the ocular surface in 3-D using video recordings acquired during examinations, and 2) grade the severity using registered frames. Our registration method uses unsupervised image-to-depth learning. These methods learn depth from lights and shadows and estimate pose based on depth maps. However, DED examinations undergo unresolved challenges including a moving light source, transparent ocular tissues, etc. To overcome these and estimate the ego-motion, we implement joint CNN architectures with multiple losses incorporating prior known information, namely the shape of the eye, through semantic segmentation as well as sphere fitting. The achieved tracking errors outperform the state-of-the-art, with a mean Euclidean distance as low as 0.48% of the image width on our test set. This registration improves the DED severity classification by a 0.20 AUC difference. In this work, we study the equiatomic quaternary Heusler Alloy CoFeCrP using two methods: DFT and Monte Carlo simulations. The DFT method allowed us to illustrate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of this alloy. The ground state phase diagrams have been presented to show the stable configurations in different physical parameter planes. On the other hand, the Monte Carlo simulations, performed under the Metropolis algorithm, permitted to deduce the critical the behavior of the equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloy CoFeCrP. The structural properties results show that the phase of type I, of this alloy is the most stable configuration. In addition, the band structures, and density of states calculations results show that this compound exhibits a half-metallic character with a 100 % of spin polarization (SP) at the Fermi-level. The total magnetic moment of the Heusler compound is found to be 4.00 mu_B. Moreover, it is found that the Slater-Pauling is well described for this alloy. Our results show that this material is a potential candidate for the spintronic applications. This is due to its half-metallicity, its high spin moments, its complete SP polarization and its high Curie temperature.

In this work, we study the effect of doping the Rutile-type dioxide SnO2 material by the non-metal Sulfur (S) atoms on the electronic properties. In fact, we have used the ab-initio method applied on the basis of the Density Functional Theory (DFT) using the Quantum Espresso code. Through the density of states and the band structure calculations for different concentrations have been deduced. When doping the SnO2 material with 6% of Sulfur (S), we found a perfect symmetry between up and down spin states in the total DOS confirming the non-magnetic behavior of this material doped SnO2 with 6% of Sulfur. It is also worth to note that the SnO2 material doped with 6% of Sulfur, exhibits a semiconductor of the P-type. Moreover the band gap decreases when increasing the concentration of doping the SnO2 by Sulfur. Our results are in good agreement with the existing literature both experimental and theoretical.

Silicene, a new two-dimensional (2D) material has attracted intense research because of the ubiquitous use of silicon in modern technology. However, producing free-standing silicene has proved to be a huge challenge. Until now, silicene could be synthesized only on metal surfaces where it naturally forms strong interactions with the metal substrate that modify its electronic properties. Here, we report the first experimental evidence of silicene sheet on an insulating NaCl thin film. This work represents a major breakthrough; for the study of the intrinsic properties of silicene, and by extension to other 2D materials that have so far only been grown on metal surfaces.

Na$_{0.5}$(Bi$_3$/4RE$_{1/4}$)$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$ (RENBT, RE = Nd, Gd, Dy, and Ho) compounds were investigated in the framework of first-principles calculations using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method based on the spin-polarized density functional theory implemented in the WIEN2k code. Combined charge density distribution and Ti K-edge x-ray absorption spectra revealed that the RENBT compositions with high polarization values were accompanied by a higher TiO$_6$ distortion, DyNBT, and NdNBT compounds. The effect of the rare-earth elements on the polarization were confirmed experimentally with the collection of the hysteresis loops. The investigation of the electronic properties of the compounds highlighted the emergence of a magnetization owing to the 4f orbital effect of the rare-earth elements. Besides, the investigation of the chemical ordering showed a short-range chemical ordering for the pure composition and an increased A-site disorder for dysprosium doped NBT system. In this work structural refinement, complex impedance spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy have been investigated on Na$_{0.5}$(Bi$_{1-x}$Dy$_x$)$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$ (xDyNBT) ceramic systems. The pure NBT, 2DyNBT and 5DyNBT compounds crystallize in a rhombohedral structure while the 15DyNBT composition crystallizes in an orthorhombic Pnma structure. We reported that dysprosium addition affects the phase transition temperatures as well as the dielectric losses. The electrical transport at high temperatures was investigated using the CIS over a wide frequency range. The studied samples showed a non-Debye type process, with a short-range relaxation for the pure NBT and a coexistence of both localized and long-range relaxations of charge carriers for the 2DyNBT and 5DyNBT compounds. For the high concentration, 15DyNBT, a short-range relaxation is observed. Moreover, using a brick-layer model we discuss the resistance and capacitance of the different contributors (grain and grain boundaries) in our samples. High temperature Raman spectroscopy investigation was performed in order to follow the temperature evolution of the structural transformations on ferroelectric compounds. Anomalies in the temperature evolution of the vibrational modes are seen to correlate well with the temperature transitions observed from dielectric measurements.

A-site deficient Ba$_{0.975}$La$_{0.017}$(ZrxTi$_{0.95-x}$)Sn$_{0.05}$O$_3$ (x = 0.05; 0.20) ceramics (BLaZ100xTS) were synthesized using the solid-state reaction. The microstructural study revealed a high density and low porosity in the studied ceramics. Besides, grain size lower than 1.5 micrometer was observed in the studied compounds, which is due to the incorporation of the rare earth element (lanthanum). X-ray diffraction and Raman studies revealed that BLaZ5TS and BLaZ20TS crystallize in a perovskite-type structure with tetragonal and cubic symmetry, respectively. The dielectric study showed a normal ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition for BLaZ5TS while a diffuse phase transition is noticed for BLaZ20TS sample. The energy-storage density and the associated energy efficiency were determined from the P-E loops versus temperature and the calculated values are comparable with results obtained on BCZT systems. Furthermore, the adiabatic temperature change (Delta)T was calculated through the indirect method and a relatively high value of (Delta)T/(Delta)E = 0.2 10-6 K m/V is obtained in BLaZ5TS system. The simultaneous presence of energy storage property and electrocaloric responsivity makes this system a promising environmentally friendly candidate for application in electronic devices.

The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of Fe7S8 material have been studied within the framework of the ab-initio calculations, the mean field approximation (MFA) and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Our study shows that two forms of the iron atoms, Fe2+ with spin S=2, and Fe3+ with spin {\sigma}=5/2 are the most probable configurations. A mixed Ising model with ferromagnetic spin coupling between Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions and between Fe3+ and Fe3+ ions, and with antiferromagnetic spin coupling between Fe2+ ions of adjacent layers has been used to study the magnetic properties of this compound. We demonstrated that the magnetic phase transition can be either of the first or of the second order, depending on the value of the exchange interaction and crystal field. The presence of vacancies in every second iron layer leads to incomplete cancellation of magnetic moments, hence to the emergence of the ferrimagnetism. Combining multiple degrees of freedom in strongly-correlated materials such as transition-metal oxides would lead to fascinating magnetic and magnetocaloric features. Herein, the strain effects are used to markedly tailor the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of PrVO3 thin films. The selection of appropriate thickness and substrate enables us to dramatically decrease the coercive magnetic field from 2.4 T previously observed in sintered PVO3 bulk to 0.05 T for compressive thin films making from the PrVO3 compound a nearly soft magnet. This is associated with a marked enhancement of the magnetic moment and the magnetocaloric effect that reach unusual maximum values of roughly 4.86 uB and 56.8 J/kg K in the magnetic field change of 6 T applied in the sample plane at the cryogenic temperature range (3 K), respectively. This work strongly suggests that taking advantage of different degrees of freedom and the exploitation of multiple instabilities in a nanoscale regime is a promising strategy for unveiling unexpected phases accompanied by a large magnetocaloric effect in oxides., Comment: This paper is accepted for publication in Applied Physics Letters

High critical temperature cuprate superconducting materials are composed of copper oxide layers and interlayer charge reservoirs. When not doped, these cuprates are antiferromagnetic insulators. We propose to design new materials by combining alternating layers of parents of hole-doped and electron-doped of these cuprates and modifications thereof. Our goal is to find undoped cuprates that can be either an antiferromagnetic insulator or a quantum metal. The term quantum metal means a metal characterized by long range antiferromagnetic order or only strong antiferromagnetic correlations, i.e., it is thus a stable ground state against any other perturbations. The new metallic states sought here could be precursors to new superconducting states in the absence or presence of doping. Using the density functional theory, we report on two compounds {La}{Pr}CuO4 and {La}{V}CuO4 that illustrate the different physics described above. The curly brackets mean that the preparation of these compounds shall be done by depositing a layer containing Pr, then one CuO2 layer, then finally the La layer in {La}{Pr}CuO4 for example. The configuration formed by the positions of the charge reservoir atoms with respect to the CuO2 layer is an important factor in the new procedure we propose here. This paper reports on the X-ray diffraction, electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of these hypothetical materials. We found that {La}{Pr}CuO4 is a Mott insulator, but {La}{V}CuO4 is an undoped correlated quantum metal with long-range order. The effect of the orientation of the cation MA (i.e., CH3NH3) on the physical properties of MAPbI3 are investigated using the density functional theory. We report that the Fermi energy level exhibits a large variation with MA orientation, and it is this Fermi level variation that makes this material unique and so different from the non-organic perovskites. The Fermi level variation with orientation of MA is proposed to be responsible for the experimentally observed intrinsic open-circuit voltage V_OC, ambipolarity, and long lifetime of the excitons. Based on our results, ferroelectric domains in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase or clusters of MA molecules not rotating in unison (as a consequence of e.g. impurities and/or defects) in the higher-temperature tetragonal and cubic phases are proposed to be responsible for ambipolarity. This is because any given two adjacent domains or clusters with different MA s average orientations may have very different Fermi levels, causing them to behave as an effective diode. Also, the measured significant lifetime of excitons in MAPbI3 finds a natural explanation using this effective diode. Thus, our work provides a unified manner for explaining at least these three important properties in terms of the rotation-induced Fermi level variations. Red blood cells (RBCs) -- erythrocytes -- suspended in plasma tend to aggregate and form rouleaux. During aggregation the first stage consists in the formation of RBC doublets [Blood cells, molecules, and diseases 25, 339 (1999)]. While aggregates are normally dissociated by moderate flow stresses, under some pathological conditions the aggregation becomes irreversible, which leads to high blood viscosity and vessel occlusion. We perform here two-dimensional simulations to study the doublet dynamics under shear flow in different conditions and its impact on rheology. We sum up our results on the dynamics of doublet in a rich phase diagram in the parameter space (flow strength, adhesion energy) showing four different types of doublet configurations and dynamics. We find that membrane tank-treading plays an important role in doublet disaggregation, in agreement with experiments on RBCs. A remarkable feature found here is that when a single cell performs tumbling (by increasing vesicle internal viscosity) the doublet formed due to adhesion (even very weak) remains stable even under a very strong shear rate. It is seen in this regime that an increase of shear rate induces an adaptation of the doublet conformation allowing the aggregate to resist cell-cell detachment. We show that the normalized effective viscosity of doublet suspension increases significantly with the adhesion energy, a fact which should affect blood perfusion in microcirculation., Comment: 14pages

The chemical ordering, electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of $Na_{0.5}Bi_{0.5}TiO_{3}$ (NBT) and 25$\%$ dysprosium doped NBT (DyNBT) were investigated in the framework of first-principles calculations using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method based on spin-polarized density functional theory implemented in the WIEN2k code. We demonstrated that NBT structure is stable in the 001 A-site configuration, while DyNBT presents an A-site disorder perceived by the minimal energy difference between the different A-site configurations. A significant magnetic moment of $5{\mu}B$ emerges in DyNBT system, while NBT is known to be non-magnetic. Dysprosium in NBT matrix seems to form an ionic bonding with oxygen atoms whereas Bi-O forms covalent bonding which is responsible for the decrease of the polarization value from 42.3 ${\mu}C/cm^{2}$ for NBT to 22.08 ${\mu}C/cm^{2}$ for the doped compound. In the second part, the transition temperature and the hysteresis loops of $Na_{0.5}(Bi_{1-x}Dy_{x})_{0.5}TiO_{3}$ system x = 0 - $25\%$ were investigated using the Monte Carlo simulation. We observed a decrease in the transition temperature as a function of dysprosium introduction. We pointed out from the hysteresis loops, an apparent decrease of the coercive field together with the remanent polarization as a function of doping and also as a function of temperature. Our proposed model was seen to approach the values of experimental studies.

In this work, a successful synthesis of magnetic cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles is presented. The synthesized CoFe2O4 nanoparticles have a spherical shape and highly monodisperse in the selected solvent. The effect of different reaction conditions such as temperature, reaction time and varying capping agents on the phase and morphology is studied. Scanning transmission electron microscopy showed that the size of these nanoparticles can be controlled by varying reaction conditions. Both X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy corroborate the formation of CoFe2O4 spinel structure with cubic symmetry. Due to optimized reaction parameters, each nanoparticle was shown to be a single magnetic domain with diameter ranges from 6 to 16 nm. Finally, the magnetic investigations showed that the obtained nanoparticles are superparamagnetic with a small coercivity value of about 315 Oe and a saturation magnetization of 58 emu/g at room temperature. These results make the cobalt ferrite nanoparticles promising for advanced magnetic nanodevices and biomagnetic applications., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Flux of rigid or soft particles (such as drops, vesicles, red blood cells, etc.) in a channel is a complex function of particle concentration, which depends on the details of induced dissipation and suspension structure due to hydrodynamic interactions with walls or between neighboring particles. Through two-dimensional and three-dimensional simulations and a simple model that reveals the contribution of the main characteristics of the flowing suspension, we discuss the existence of an optimal volume fraction for cell transport and its dependence on the cell mechanical properties. The example of blood is explored in detail, by adopting the commonly used modeling of red blood cells dynamics. We highlight the complexity of optimization at the level of a network, due to the antagonist evolution of local volume fraction and optimal volume fraction with the channels diameter. In the case of the blood network, the most recent results on the size evolution of vessels along the circulatory network of healthy organs suggest that the red blood cell volume fraction (hematocrit) of healthy subjects is close to optimality, as far as transport only is concerned. We present a numerical study of the time-dependent motion of a two-dimensional vesicle in a channel under an imposed flow. In a Poiseuille flow the shape of the vesicle depends on the flow strength, the mechanical properties of the membrane, and the width of the channel as reported in the past. This study is focused on the centered snaking (CSn) shape, where the vesicle shows an oscillatory motion like a swimmer flagella even though the flow is stationary. We quantify this behavior by the amplitude and frequency of the oscillations of the vesicle's center of mass. We observe regions in parameter space, where the CSn coexists with the parachute or the unconfined slipper. The influence of an amplitude modulation of the imposed flow on the dynamics and shape of the snaking vesicle is also investigated. For large modulation amplitudes transitions to static shapes are observed. A smaller modulation amplitude induces a modulation in amplitude and frequency of the center of mass of the snaking vesicle. In a certain parameter range we find that the center of mass oscillates with a constant envelope indicating the presence of at least two stable states., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The magnetic properties of the mixed spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ and spin-$\frac{7}{2}$ Ising model with a crystal-field in a longitudinal magnetic field are investigated on the Bethe lattice using exact recursion relations. The ground-state phase diagram is constructed. The temperature-dependent one is displayed in the case of uniform crystal-field on the $(k_{\text{B}}T/|J|, D/|J|)$ plane in the absence of the external constraint for lattice coordination numbers $z = 3, 4, 6$. The order parameters and corresponding response functions as well as the internal energy are calculated and examined in detail in order to feature the real nature of phase boundaries and corresponding temperatures. Optimal hematocrit $H_o$ maximizes oxygen transport. In healthy humans, the average hematocrit $H$ is in the range of 40-45$\%$, but it can significantly change in blood pathologies such as severe anemia (low $H$) and polycythemia (high $H$). Whether the hematocrit level in humans corresponds to the optimal one is a long standing physiological question. Here, using numerical simulations with the Lattice Boltzmann method and two mechanical models of the red blood cell (RBC) we predict the optimal hematocrit, and explore how altering the mechanical properties of RBCs affects $H_o$. We develop a simplified analytical theory that accounts for results obtained from numerical simulations and provides insight into the physical mechanisms determining $H_o$. Our numerical and analytical models can easily be modified to incorporate a wide range of mechanical properties of RBCs as well as other soft particles thereby providing means for the rational design of blood substitutes. Our work lays the foundations for systematic theoretical study of the optimal hematocrit and its link with pathological RBCs associated with various diseases (e.g. sickle cell anemia, diabetes mellitus, malaria, elliptocytosis).

Based on a dendrimer graph theory, we investigate the ground state phase diagrams of a nanostructure formed by three spins: $\sigma=1/2$, S=1 and q=3/2. This nanostructure is built on a dendrimer with triangular core geometry. More precisely, we evaluate the effect of different physical parameters including the exchange interactions, the external magnetic and the crystal fields. By varying these parameters, we analytically elaborate the ground state phase diagrams. Concretely, we found that the existence of the crystal field increases the number of stable phases. The total number of possible phases is 24=2x3x4, which are: ($\pm$1/2,$\pm$1,$\pm$3/2), ($\pm$1/2,0,$\pm$3/2), ($\pm$1/2,$\pm$1,$\pm$1/2) and ($\pm$1/2,0,$\pm$1/2). All these phases are found to be stable, expect two special phases: (+1/2,0,-3/2) and (-1/2,0,+3/2), which are masked by the other phases in all the ground state phase diagrams., Comment: 4 pages, 7 Figures

The mechanism of hydrodynamics-induced pairing of soft particles, namely closed bilayer membranes (vesicles, a model system for red blood cells) and drops, is studied numerically with a special attention paid to the role of the confinement (the particles are within two rigid walls). This study unveils the complexity of the pairing mechanism due to hydrodynamic interactions. We find both for vesicles and for drops that two particles attract each other and form a stable pair at weak confinement if their initial separation is below a certain value. If the initial separation is beyond that distance, the particles repel each other and adopt a longer stable interdistance. This means that for the same confinement we have (at least) two stable branches. To which branch a pair of particles relaxes with time depends only on the initial configuration. An unstable branch is found between these two stable branches. At a critical confinement the stable branch corresponding to the shortest interdistance merges with the unstable branch in the form of a saddle-node bifurcation. At this critical confinement we have a finite jump from a solution corresponding to the continuation of the unbounded case to a solution which is induced by the presence of walls. The results are summarized in a phase diagram, which proves to be of a complex nature. The fact that both vesicles and drops have the same qualitative phase diagram points to the existence of a universal behavior, highlighting the fact that with regard to pairing the details of mechanical properties of the deformable particles are unimportant. This offers an interesting perspective for simple analytical modeling.

Red blood cells (RBCs) are the major component of blood and the flow of blood is dictated by that of RBCs. We employ vesicles, which consist of closed bilayer membranes enclosing a fluid, as a model system to study the behavior of RBCs under a confined Poiseuille flow. We extensively explore two main parameters: i) the degree of confinement of vesicles within the channel, and ii) the flow strength. Rich and complex dynamics for vesicles are revealed ranging from steady-state shapes (in the form of parachute and slipper) to chaotic dynamics of shape. Chaos occurs through a cascade of multiple periodic oscillations of the vesicle shape. We summarize our results in a phase diagram in the parameter plane (degree of confinement, flow strength). This finding highlights the level of complexity of a flowing vesicle in the small Reynolds number where the flow is laminar in the absence of vesicles and can be rendered turbulent due to elasticity of vesicles., Comment: acceptd for Phys. The supply of oxygen and nutrients and the disposal of metabolic waste in the organs depend strongly on how blood, especially red blood cells, flow through the microvascular network. Macromolecular plasma proteins such as fibrinogen cause red blood cells to form large aggregates, called rouleaux, which are usually assumed to be disaggregated in the circulation due to the shear forces present in bulk flow. This leads to the assumption that rouleaux formation is only relevant in the venule network and in arterioles at low shear rates or stasis. Thanks to an excellent agreement between combined experimental and numerical approaches, we show that despite the large shear rates present in microcapillaries, the presence of either fibrinogen or the synthetic polymer dextran leads to an enhanced formation of robust clusters of red blood cells, even at haematocrits as low as 1%. Robust aggregates are shown to exist in microcapillaries even for fibrinogen concentrations within the healthy physiological range. These persistent aggregates should strongly affect cell distribution and blood perfusion in the microvasculature, with putative implications for blood disorders even within apparently asymptomatic subjects., Comment: to appear in Scientific Reports

The magnetic properties of Mn-doped ZnO semi-conductor have been investigated using the Monte Carlo method within the Ising model. The temperature dependences of the spontaneous magnetization, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility have been constructed for different concentrations of magnetic dopant Mn and different carrier concentrations. The exact values of Mn concentration and carrier concentration at which high temperature transition occurs are determined. An alternative for the explanation of some controversies concerning the existence and the nature of magnetism in Mn diluted in ZnO systems is given. We study the magnetic properties of a mixed Ising ferrimagnetic system, in which the two interacting sublattices have spins $\sigma$, $(\pm 1/2)$ and spins $S$, $(\pm 3/2,\pm 1/2)$ in the presence of a random crystal field, with the mean field approach. The obtained results show the existence of some interesting phenomena, such as the appearance of a new ferrimagnetic phase namely the partly ferrimagnetic phase $(m_{\sigma}=\frac{-1}{2},m_S=+1)$ and consequently the existence of three topologically different types of phase diagrams. The effect of increasing the exchange interaction parameter $J$, at very low temperature is investigated. The transitions shown in these phase diagrams are in good agreement with those obtained in the ground state case.

We study the spin-1 Ising model with bilinear and biquadratic exchange interactions and single-ion crystal field. In addition to the four usual phases: disordered DIS, ferromagnetic FER, antiquadrupolar AQU and ferrimagnetic FRI, we found three new phases in the case of a thin magnetic film, namely: the sublattice A non magnetic phase NMA, the sublattice B non magnetic phase NMB and the global non magnetic phase NMG. These phases are studied, for each layer of the film, either in the temperature-crystal field plane $(T,\Delta)$ or in the biquadratic coupling-crystal field plane $(d,\Delta)$, for diferent film thicknesses. On the other hand, the thermal behaviour of the layer quadrupolar moments $q_{A}, q_{B}$ and layer magnetisations $m_{A}, m_{B}$ are investigated for negative values of the biquadratic coupling and crystal field. It is also found that for fixed values of the biquadratic coupling, the temperature and the crystal field, each layer of the film can belong to a differnt phase. We have numerically investigated the effect of the delay times $\tau_f$ and $\tau_s$ of a mixture of fast and slow vehicles on the fundamental diagram of the optimal velocity model. The optimal velocity function of the fast cars depends not only on the headway of each car but also on the headway of the immediately preceding one. It is found that the small delay times have almost no effects, while, for sufficiently large delay time $\tau_s$ the current profile displays qualitatively five different forms depending on $\tau_f$, $\tau_s$ and the fractions $d_f$ and $d_s$ of the fast and slow cars respectively. The velocity (current) exhibits first order transitions at low and/or high densities, from freely moving phase to the congested state, and from congested state to the jamming one respectively accompanied by the existence of a local minimal current. Furthermore, there exist a critical value of $\tau_f$ above which the metastability and hysteresis appear. The spatial-temporal traffic patterns present more complex structure

Wetting phenomena plays an interesting role in the technological development of materials. Recently, much attention has been directed to the study of magnetic solid films. To understand, theoretically, the effect of surface on wetting and layering transitions in these systems, we will give in this chapter a presentation of several relevant recent theoretical works realized on wetting and layering transitions in which we explain how the nature of surface can affect the behavior of wetting and layering transitions. Using different spin systems models and different numerical and approximate methods such as mean field and effective field theories, real space renormalization group technique, transfer matrix method and Monte-Carlo simulations, it is found that the wetting and layering transitions depend on the nature of the surface magnetic field, the surface coupling strength, the surface crystal field, the geometry of surface, the in-homogeneity of substrate and the quantum fluctuations at the surface�

The effect of the random quantum transverse field $\Omega$ on the tricritical behavior of the spin-1 Blume- Emery- Griffiths (BEG) model is studied using effective field theory. It is found, that the tricritical behavior depends on both the biquadratic interaction $K$, single- ion anisotropy $\Delta$, and the concentration $p$ of the disorder of $\Omega$. Indeed, there exist a special value $p_{1}$ of the probability $p$ below which the tricritical behavior disappears.

The disorder and layer transitions in the interface between an Ising spin-1/2 film denoted $(n)$, and an Ising spin-1 film denoted $(m)$, are studied using Monte Carlo simulations. The effects of both an external magnetic field, acting only on the spin-1/2 film, and a crystal magnetic field acting only on the spin-1 film, are studied for a fixed temperature and selected values of the coupling constant $J_p$ between the two films. It is found that for large values of the constant $J_p$, the layers of the film $(n)$, as well as those of the film $(m)$, undergo a first order layering transition. On the other hand, the only disordered layer of the film $(n)$ is that one belonging to the interface films $(n)/(m)$, for any values of the crystal field $\Delta$. We show the existence of a critical value of the crystal field $\Delta_c$, above which this particular layer of the film $(n)$ is disordered. The effect of a random surface field, within the bimodal distribution, on the layering transitions in a spin-1/2 Ising thin film is investigated, using Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that the layering transitions depend strongly on the concentration $p$ of the disorder of the surface magnetic field, for a fixed temperature, surface and external magnetic fields. Indeed, the critical concentration $p_c(k)$ at which the magnetisation of each layer $k$ changes the sign discontinuously, decreases for increasing the applied surface magnetic field, for fixed values of the temperature $T$ and the external magnetic field $H$. Moreover, the behaviour of the layer magnetisations as well as the distribution of positive and negative spins in each layer, are also established for specific values of $H_s$, $H$, $p$ and the temperature $T$. \\, Comment: 5 pages latex, 6 figures postscript

We propose a traffic flow model in which the vehicles are filed from their maximal velocities, the fast cars run with $Vmax{1}$, whereas the slow ones run with $Vmax{2}$. Using new overtaking rules which deals with deterministic NaSch model, it is found that the fundamental diagram exhibits three new topologies, depending on the fractions $f_{fast}$ and $f_{slow}$ of fast and slow vehicles respectively, in which the current profile displays two branches with negative slopes and two branches with positive ones. Moreover, in the second branch of the fundamental diagram, the model exhibits an absorbing phase transitions in which the behaviour of the order parameter $f_{d}$ and the current J is described by the power laws. In this case, it'is found that the system present a universel scaling law. On the other hand, a simple change in the rule of overtaking induce the metastability which depends on the state of the chain instead of external parameters \cite{4,5,6}. Furthermore, in the case of random fractions of vehicles, the fundamental diagrams are similar to the experiments results \cite{7,8}} .

We study the surface substrate inhomogeneity effect on the wetting of a spin-1/2 Ising ferromagnetic film in an external magnetic field $H$, using Monte Carlo simulations. It is found the inhomogeneity leads to the formation of islands of positive spins in each layer. However, depending on the values of $H$, for a fixed surface magnetic field $H_s$, each layer exhibits three different phases; totally wet, nonwet and partially wet (PW). In the latter case, we show the existence of three distinct configurations namely: A configuration (PWTD) in which the layer is partially wet with a total disconnection between islands; (PWPD) a configuration in which the layer is partially wet with a partial disconnection between islands; (PWTC) a configuration in which the layer is partially wet and the islands are totally connected. Furthermore, we show that an increase of $H_s$ values breaks the bonds connecting some islands of the phase (PWTC) which leads to an expansion of the (PWPD) region. On the other hand, the frequency distribution and the mean size of island are investigated in the (PWTD) region for fixed values of temperature $T$, $H_s$ and $H$. Moreover, we show the existence of 3D-islands resulting from the formation of islands in each layer.

The effect of bulk dissipation on non critical sandpile models is studied using both multifractal and finite size scaling analyses. We show numerically that the local limited (LL) model exhibits a crossover from multifractal to self-similar behavior as the control parameters $h_{ext}$ and $\epsilon$ turn towards their critical values, i.e. $h_{ext} \to 0^+ $ and $\epsilon \to \epsilon_c$. The critical exponents are not universal and exhibit a continuous variation with $\epsilon$. On the other hand, the finite size effects for the local unlimited (LU), non local limited (NLL), and non local unlimited (NLU) models are well described by the multifractal analysis for all values of dissipation rate $\epsilon$. The space-time avalanche structure is studied in order to give a deeper understanding of the finite size effects and the origin of the crossover behavior. The effect of mixture lengths of vehicles on the asymmetric exclusion model is studied using numerical simulations for both open and periodic boundaries in parallel dynamics. Densities are calculated as a function of the injecting rates $\alpha1$ and $\alpha2$ of vehicles type 1 and type 2 respectively, and the phase diagram ($\alpha1$,$\alpha2$) is presented for a fixed value of the extracting rate $\beta$. In this case the first order transition from low to high density phases occurs at $\alpha1+\alpha2=\beta$ and disappears for $\alpha2>\beta$. While, in the case of one entry the gap which is a characteristic of the first order transition vanishes with increasing $\alpha$ for n $\neq 0$.However, the first order transition between high and low densities exhibit an end point above which the global density undergoes a continuous passage. The end point coordinate depends strongly on the value of n. In the periodic boundaries case, the presence of vehicles type2 in the chain leads to a modification in the fundamental phase diagram (current, density). Indeed, the maximal current value decreases with increasing the concentration of vehicles type 2, and occurs at higher values of the global density in contrast with what was found by Schadschneider et al \cite{20}.

The effect of the absorbing sites with an absorbing rate $\beta_{0}$, in both one absorbing site (one way out) and two absorbing sites (two ways out) in a road, on the traffic flow phase transition is investigated using numerical simulations in the one-dimensional cellular automaton traffic flow model with open boundaries using parallel dynamics.In the case of one way out, there exist a critical position of the way out $ i_{c1}$ below which the current is constant for $\beta_{0}$$<$$\beta_{0c2}$ and decreases when increasing $\beta_{0}$ for $\beta_{0}$$>$$\beta_{0c2}$. When the way out is located at a position greater than $ i_{c2}$, the current increases with $\beta_{0}$ for $\beta_{0}$$<$$\beta_{0c1}$ and becomes constant for any value of $\beta_{0}$ greater than $\beta_{0c1}$. While, when the way out is located at any position between $ i_{c1}$ and $ i_{c2}$ ($ i_{c1}$$<$$ i_{c2}$), the current increases, for $\beta_{0}$$<$$\beta_{0c1}$, with $\beta_{0}$ and becomes constant for $\beta_{0c1}$$<$$\beta_{0}$$<$$\beta_{0c2}$ and decreases with $\beta_{0}$ for $\beta_{0}$$>$$\beta_{0c2}$. In the later case the density undergoes two successive first order transitions; from high density to maximal current phase at $\beta_{0}$$=$$\beta_{0c1}$ and from intermediate density to the low one at $\beta_{0}$$=$$\beta_{0c2}$. In the case of two ways out located respectively at the positions $ i_{1}$ and $ i_{2}$, the two successive transitions occur only when the distance $i_{2}$-$i_{1}$ separating the two ways is smaller than a critical distance $d_{c}$. Phase diagrams in the ($\alpha,\beta_{0}$), ($\beta,\beta_{0}$) and ($i_{1},\beta_{0}$) planes are established. It is found that the transitions between Free traffic, Congested traffic and maximal current phase are first order.

The order-disorder layering transitions, of the Blume-Capel model, are studied using the Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, in the presence of a variable crystal field. For a very low temperature, the results are in good agreement with the ground state study. The first order transition line, found for low temperatures, is connected to the second order transition line, seen for higher temperatures, by a tri-critical point, for each layer. The reentrant phenomena, caused by a competition of thermal fluctuations and an inductor magnetic field created by the deeper layers, is found for the first $k_0$ layers from the surface, where $k_0$ is exactly the number of layering transitions allowed by the ground state study. The layer magnetizations $m_k$, the magnetic susceptibilities $\chi_{m,k}$ and the quadrupolar magnetic susceptibilities $\chi_{q,k}$ and the corresponding critical exponent, for each layer $k$, are also investigated., Comment: 10 pages Latex, 9 figures Postscript format

By the use of computer simulations we investigate, in the cellular automaton of two-dimensional traffic flow, the anisotropic effect of the probabilities of the change of the move directions of cars, from up to right ($p_{ur}$) and from right to up ($p_{ru}$), on the dynamical jamming transition and velocities under the periodic boundary conditions in one hand and the phase diagram under the open boundary conditions in the other hand. However, in the former case, the first order jamming transition disappears when the cars alter their directions of move ($p_{ur}\neq 0$ and/or $p_{ru}\neq 0$). In the open boundary conditions, it is found that the first order line transition between jamming and moving phases is curved. Hence, by increasing the anisotropy, the moving phase region expand as well as the contraction of the jamming phase one. Moreover, in the isotropic case, and when each car changes its direction of move every time steps ($p_{ru}=p_{ur}=1$), the transition from the jamming phase (or moving phase) to the maximal current one is of first order. The effect of edge on wetting and layering transitions of a three-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising model is investigated, in the presence of longitudinal and surface magnetic fields, using mean field (MF) theory and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. For T=0, the ground state phase diagram shows that there exist only three allowed transitions, namely: surface and bulk transition, surface transition and bulk transition. However, there exist a surface intra-layering temperature $T_{L}^{s}$, above which the surface and the intra-layering surface transitions occur. While the bulk layering and intra-layering transitions appear above an other finite temperature $T_{L}^{b} (\ge T_{L}^{s})$. These surface and bulk intra-layering transitions are not seen in the perfect surfaces case. Numerical values of $T_{L}^{s}$ and $T_{L}^{b}$, computed by Monte Carlo method are found to be smaller than those obtained using mean field theory. However, the results predicted by the two methods become similar, and are exactly those given by the ground state phase diagram, for very low temperatures. On the other hand, the behavior of the local magnetizations as a function of the external magnetic field, shows that the transitions are of the first order type. $T_{L}^{s}$ and $T_{L}^{b}$ decrease when increasing the system size and/or the surface magnetic field. The effect of the surface coupling $J_s$ on the dependency of the layering transition temperature $T_L$ as a function of the thickness $N$, of a spin-1/2 Ising film, is studied using the mean field theory. It is found that for $J_s$ greater than a critical value ($J_{sc}=1.30$), the layering transition temperature decreases when the film thickness $N$ increases for any values of the surface magnetic field $H_s$. While, for $J_s < J_{sc}$, the behaviour of the layering transition temperature $T_L$, as a function of $N$, depends strongly on the values of $H_s$. Indeed, we show the existence of three distinct behaviours of $T_L$, as a function of the film thickness $N$, separated by two critical surface magnetic fields $H_{sc1}$ and $H_{sc2}$, namely: $(i)$ for $H_s < H_{sc1}$, $T_L$ increases with $N$; $(ii)$ for $H_{sc1} < H_s < H_{sc2}$, $T_L$ increases for small values of $N$, and decreases for large value ones; (iii) while for $H_s > H_{sc2}$, $T_L$ decreases with increasing the film thickness. Furthermore, depending on the values of $J_s$, the wetting temperature $T_w (T_w=T_L$ when $N \to \infty$ for a given material), can be greater or smaller than the layering transition temperature of a film of thickness $N$ of the same material., Comment: 9 pages Latex, 6 figures PS

The magnetic order-disorder layering transitions of a spin-1 Ising model are investigated, under the effect of a variable surface crystal field $\Delta_{s}$, using the mean field theory. Each layer $k$, of the film formed with $N$ layers, disorders at a finite surface crystal field distributed according to the law $\Delta_k=\Delta_s/k^\alpha$, $k=1,2,...,N$ and $\alpha$ being a positive constant. We have established the temperature-crystal field phase diagrams and found a constant tricritical point and a reentrant phenomenon for the first $k_0$ layers. This reentrant phenomenon is absent for the remaining $N-k_0 $ layers, but the tricritical points subsist and depend not only on the film thickness but also on the exponent $\alpha$.
