The Mapper algorithm is a popular tool for visualization and data exploration in topological data analysis. We investigate an inverse problem for the Mapper algorithm: Given a dataset $X$ and a graph $G$, does there exist a set of Mapper parameters such that the output Mapper graph of $X$ is isomorphic to $G$? The diagnostic accuracy and subjectivity of existing Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) ordinal grading systems has been a subject of on-going debate and concern. Existing automated solutions are trained to emulate these imperfect systems, whilst also being reliant on large annotated databases for fully-supervised training. This work proposes a three stage approach for automated continuous grading of knee OA that is built upon the principles of Anomaly Detection (AD); learning a robust representation of healthy knee X-rays and grading disease severity based on its distance to the centre of normality. In the first stage, SS-FewSOME is proposed, a self-supervised AD technique that learns the 'normal' representation, requiring only examples of healthy subjects and <3% of the labels that existing methods require. In the second stage, this model is used to pseudo label a subset of unlabelled data as 'normal' or 'anomalous', followed by denoising of pseudo labels with CLIP. The final stage involves retraining on labelled and pseudo labelled data using the proposed Dual Centre Representation Learning (DCRL) which learns the centres of two representation spaces; normal and anomalous. Disease severity is then graded based on the distance to the learned centres. The proposed methodology outperforms existing techniques by margins of up to 24% in terms of OA detection and the disease severity scores correlate with the Kellgren-Lawrence grading system at the same level as human expert performance. The method of Feynman-Kac perturbation of quantum stochastic processes has a long pedigree, with the theory usually developed within the framework of processes on von Neumann algebras. In this work, the theory of operator spaces is exploited to enable a broadening of the scope to flows on $C^*$ algebras. Although the hypotheses that need to be verified in the general setting may seem numerous, we provide auxiliary results that enable this to be simplified in many of the cases which arise in practice. Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating disease affecting over 250 million people worldwide. Currently, radiologists grade the severity of OA on an ordinal scale from zero to four using the Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) system. Recent studies have raised concern in relation to the subjectivity of the KL grading system, highlighting the requirement for an automated system, while also indicating that five ordinal classes may not be the most appropriate approach for assessing OA severity. This work presents preliminary results of an automated system with a continuous grading scale. This system, namely SS-FewSOME, uses self-supervised pre-training to learn robust representations of the features of healthy knee X-rays. It then assesses the OA severity by the X-rays' distance to the normal representation space. SS-FewSOME initially trains on only 'few' examples of healthy knee X-rays, thus reducing the barriers to clinical implementation by eliminating the need for large training sets and costly expert annotations that existing automated systems require. The work reports promising initial results, obtaining a positive Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient of 0.43, having had access to only 30 ground truth labels at training time.

Following the Pluto fly-by of the New Horizons spacecraft, the mission provided a unique opportunity to explore the Kuiper Belt in-situ. The possibility existed to fly-by a Kuiper Belt object (KBO) as well as to observe additional objects at distances closer than are feasible from earth-orbit facilities. However, at the time of launch no KBOs were known about that were accessible by the spacecraft. In this paper we present the results of 10 years of observations and three uniquely dedicated efforts -- two ground-based using the Subaru Suprime Camera, the Magellan MegaCam and IMACS Cameras, and one with the Hubble Space Telescope -- to find such KBOs for study. In this paper we overview the search criteria and strategies employed in our work and detail the analysis efforts to locate and track faint objects in the galactic plane. We also present a summary of all of the KBOs that were discovered as part of our efforts and how spacecraft targetability was assessed, including a detailed description of our astrometric analysis which included development of an extensive secondary calibration network. Overall, these efforts resulted in the discovery of 89 KBOs including 11 which became objects for distant observation by New Horizons and (486958) Arrokoth which became the first post-Pluto fly-by destination., Comment: Accepted to PSJ. 40 pages, 10 figures, 10 tables

Compared to the entrywise transforms which preserve positive semidefiniteness, those leaving invariant the inertia of symmetric matrices reveal a surprising rigidity. We first obtain the classification of negativity preservers by combining recent advances in matrix analysis with some novel arguments using well chosen test matrices. We continue with the analogous classification in the multi-variable setting, revealing a striking separation of variables, with absolute monotonicity on one side and homotheties on the other. We continue the study of real polynomials acting entrywise on matrices of fixed dimension to preserve positive semidefiniteness, together with the related analysis of order properties of Schur polynomials. Previous work has shown that, given a real polynomial with positive coefficients that is perturbed by adding a higher-degree monomial, there exists a negative lower bound for the coefficient of the perturbation which characterizes when the perturbed polynomial remains positivity preserving. We show here that, if the perturbation coefficient is strictly greater than this bound then the transformed matrix becomes positive definite given a simple genericity condition that can be readily verified. We identity a slightly stronger genericity condition that ensures positive definiteness occurs at the boundary. The analysis is complemented by computing the rank of the transformed matrix in terms of the location of the original matrix in a Schubert cell-type stratification that we have introduced and explored previously. The proofs require enhancing to strictness a Schur monotonicity result of Khare and Tao, to show that the ratio of Schur polynomials is strictly increasing along each coordinate on the positive orthant and non-decreasing on its closure whenever the defining tuples satisfy a coordinate-wise domination condition., Comment: 26 pages, no figures, LaTeX

The Mapper algorithm is a visualization technique in topological data analysis (TDA) that outputs a graph reflecting the structure of a given dataset. However, the Mapper algorithm requires tuning several parameters in order to generate a ``nice" Mapper graph. This paper focuses on selecting the cover parameter. We present an algorithm that optimizes the cover of a Mapper graph by splitting a cover repeatedly according to a statistical test for normality. Our algorithm is based on $G$-means clustering which searches for the optimal number of clusters in $k$-means by iteratively applying the Anderson-Darling test. Our splitting procedure employs a Gaussian mixture model to carefully choose the cover according to the distribution of the given data. Experiments for synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that our algorithm generates covers so that the Mapper graphs retain the essence of the datasets, while also running significantly fast.

eXplanation Based Learning (XBL) is an interactive learning approach that provides a transparent method of training deep learning models by interacting with their explanations. XBL augments loss functions to penalize a model based on deviation of its explanations from user annotation of image features. The literature on XBL mostly depends on the intersection of visual model explanations and image feature annotations. We present a method to add a distance-aware explanation loss to categorical losses that trains a learner to focus on important regions of a training dataset. Distance is an appropriate approach for calculating explanation loss since visual model explanations such as Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAMs) are not strictly bounded as annotations and their intersections may not provide complete information on the deviation of a model's focus from relevant image regions. In addition to assessing our model using existing metrics, we propose an interpretability metric for evaluating visual feature-attribution based model explanations that is more informative of the model's performance than existing metrics. Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a progressive disease preceded by Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Early detection of AD is crucial for making treatment decisions. However, most of the literature on computer-assisted detection of AD focuses on classifying brain images into one of three major categories: healthy, MCI, and AD; or categorizing MCI patients into (1) progressive: those who progress from MCI to AD at a future examination time, and (2) stable: those who stay as MCI and never progress to AD. This misses the opportunity to accurately identify the trajectory of progressive MCI patients. In this paper, we revisit the brain image classification task for AD identification and re-frame it as an ordinal classification task to predict how close a patient is to the severe AD stage. To this end, we select progressive MCI patients from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset and construct an ordinal dataset with a prediction target that indicates the time to progression to AD. We train a Siamese network model to predict the time to onset of AD based on MRI brain images. We also propose a Weighted variety of Siamese network and compare its performance to a baseline model. Our evaluations show that incorporating a weighting factor to Siamese networks brings considerable performance gain at predicting how close input brain MRI images are to progressing to AD. Recent Anomaly Detection techniques have progressed the field considerably but at the cost of increasingly complex training pipelines. Such techniques require large amounts of training data, resulting in computationally expensive algorithms that are unsuitable for settings where only a small amount of normal samples are available for training. We propose 'Few Shot anOMaly detection' (FewSOME), a deep One-Class Anomaly Detection algorithm with the ability to accurately detect anomalies having trained on 'few' examples of the normal class and no examples of the anomalous class. We describe FewSOME to be of low complexity given its low data requirement and short training time. FewSOME is aided by pretrained weights with an architecture based on Siamese Networks. By means of an ablation study, we demonstrate how our proposed loss, 'Stop Loss', improves the robustness of FewSOME. Our experiments demonstrate that FewSOME performs at state-of-the-art level on benchmark datasets MNIST, CIFAR-10, F-MNIST and MVTec AD while training on only 30 normal samples, a minute fraction of the data that existing methods are trained on. Moreover, our experiments show FewSOME to be robust to contaminated datasets. Local maxima and minima, or extremal events, in experimental time series can be used as a coarse summary to characterize data. However, the discrete sampling in recording experimental measurements suggests uncertainty on the true timing of extrema during the experiment. This in turn gives uncertainty in the timing order of extrema within the time series. Motivated by applications in genomic time series and biological network analysis, we construct a weighted directed acyclic graph (DAG) called an extremal event DAG using techniques from persistent homology that is robust to measurement noise. Furthermore, we define a distance between extremal event DAGs based on the edit distance between strings. We prove several properties including local stability for the extremal event DAG distance with respect to pairwise $L_{\infty}$ distances between functions in the time series data. Lastly, we provide algorithms, publicly free software, and implementations on extremal event DAG construction and comparison.

Fractional powers and polynomial maps preserving structured totally positive matrices, one-sided Polya frequency functions, or totally positive kernels are treated from a unifying perspective. Besides the stark rigidity of the polynomial transforms, we unveil an ubiquitous separation between discrete and continuous spectra of such inner fractional powers. Classical works of Schoenberg, Karlin, Hirschman, and Widder are completed by our classification. This work employs a pre-trained, multi-view Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with a spatial attention block to optimise knee injury detection. An open-source Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data set with image-level labels was leveraged for this analysis. As MRI data is acquired from three planes, we compare our technique using data from a single-plane and multiple planes (multi-plane). For multi-plane, we investigate various methods of fusing the planes in the network. This analysis resulted in the novel 'MPFuseNet' network and state-of-the-art Area Under the Curve (AUC) scores for detecting Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears and Abnormal MRIs, achieving AUC scores of 0.977 and 0.957 respectively. We then developed an objective metric, Penalised Localisation Accuracy (PLA), to validate the model's localisation ability. This metric compares binary masks generated from Grad-Cam output and the radiologist's annotations on a sample of MRIs. We also extracted explainability features in a model-agnostic approach that were then verified as clinically relevant by the radiologist.

Noisy data present in medical imaging datasets can often aid the development of robust models that are equipped to handle real-world data. However, if the bad data contains insufficient anatomical information, it can have a severe negative effect on the model's performance. We propose a novel methodology using a semi-supervised Siamese network to identify bad data. This method requires only a small pool of 'reference' medical images to be reviewed by a non-expert human to ensure the major anatomical structures are present in the Field of View. The model trains on this reference set and identifies bad data by using the Siamese network to compute the distance between the reference set and all other medical images in the dataset. This methodology achieves an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.989 for identifying bad data. Code will be available at https://git.io/JYFuV.

The purpose of this article is to study directed collapsibility of directed Euclidean cubical complexes. One application of this is in the nontrivial task of verifying the execution of concurrent programs. The classical definition of collapsibility involves certain conditions on a pair of cubes of the complex. The direction of the space can be taken into account by requiring that the past links of vertices remain homotopy equivalent after collapsing. We call this type of collapse a link-preserving directed collapse. In this paper, we give combinatorially equivalent conditions for preserving the topology of the links, allowing for the implementation of an algorithm for collapsing a directed Euclidean cubical complex. Furthermore, we give conditions for when link-preserving directed collapses preserve the contractability and connectedness of directed path spaces, as well as examples when link-preserving directed collapses do not preserve the number of connected components of the path space between the minimum and a given vertex., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures

Hirschman and Widder introduced a class of P\'olya frequency functions given by linear combinations of one-sided exponential functions. The members of this class are probability densities, and the class is closed under convolution but not under pointwise multiplication. We show that, generically, a polynomial function of such a density is a P\'olya frequency function only if the polynomial is a homothety, and also identify a subclass for which each positive-integer power is a P\'olya frequency function. This report is based on the modified NIST challenge, Too Close For Too Long, provided by the SFI Centre for Machine Learning (ML-Labs). The modified challenge excludes the time calculation (too long) aspect. By handcrafting features from phone instrumental data we develop two machine learning models, a GBM and an MLP, to estimate distance between two phones. A matrix-compression algorithm is derived from a novel isogenic block decomposition for square matrices. The resulting compression and inflation operations possess strong functorial and spectral-permanence properties. The basic observation that Hadamard entrywise functional calculus preserves isogenic blocks has already proved to be of paramount importance for thresholding large correlation matrices. The proposed isogenic stratification of the set of complex matrices bears similarities to the Schubert cell stratification of a homogeneous algebraic manifold. The composition operators preserving total non-negativity and total positivity for various classes of kernels are classified, following three themes. Letting a function act by post composition on kernels with arbitrary domains, it is shown that such a composition operator maps the set of totally non-negative kernels to itself if and only if the function is constant or linear, or just linear if it preserves total positivity. Symmetric kernels are also discussed, with a similar outcome. These classification results are a byproduct of two matrix-completion results and the second theme: an extension of A.M. Whitney's density theorem from finite domains to subsets of the real line. This extension is derived via a discrete convolution with modulated Gaussian kernels. The third theme consists of analyzing, with tools from harmonic analysis, the preservers of several families of totally non-negative and totally positive kernels with additional structure: continuous Hankel kernels on an interval, P\'olya frequency functions, and P\'olya frequency sequences. The persistence diagram (PD) is an increasingly popular topological descriptor. By encoding the size and prominence of topological features at varying scales, the PD provides important geometric and topological information about a space. Recent work has shown that well-chosen (finite) sets of PDs can differentiate between geometric simplicial complexes, providing a method for representing complex shapes using a finite set of descriptors. A related inverse problem is the following: given a set of PDs (or an oracle we can query for persistence diagrams), what is underlying geometric simplicial complex? In this paper, we present an algorithm for reconstructing embedded graphs in $\mathbb{R}^d$ (plane graphs in $\mathbb{R}^2$) with $n$ vertices from $n^2 - n + d + 1$ directional (augmented) PDs. Additionally, we empirically validate the correctness and time-complexity of our algorithm in $\mathbb{R}^2$ on randomly generated plane graphs using our implementation, and explain the numerical limitations of implementing our algorithm., Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures. In the directed setting, the spaces of directed paths between fixed initial and terminal points are the defining feature for distinguishing different directed spaces. The simplest case is when the space of directed paths is homotopy equivalent to that of a single path; we call this the trivial space of directed paths. Directed spaces that are topologically trivial may have non-trivial spaces of directed paths, which means that information is lost when the direction of these topological spaces is ignored. We define a notion of directed collapsibility in the setting of a directed Euclidean cubical complex using the spaces of directed paths of the underlying directed topological space relative to an initial or a final vertex. In addition, we give sufficient conditions for a directed Euclidean cubical complex to have a contractible or a connected space of directed paths from a fixed initial vertex. We also give sufficient conditions for the path space between two vertices in a Euclidean cubical complex to be disconnected. Our results have applications to speeding up the verification process of concurrent programming and to understanding partial executions in concurrent programs.

This survey contains a selection of topics unified by the concept of positive semi-definiteness (of matrices or kernels), reflecting natural constraints imposed on discrete data (graphs or networks) or continuous objects (probability or mass distributions). We put emphasis on entrywise operations which preserve positivity, in a variety of guises. Techniques from harmonic analysis, function theory, operator theory, statistics, combinatorics, and group representations are invoked. Topological Data Analysis (TDA) studies the shape of data. A common topological descriptor is the persistence diagram, which encodes topological features in a topological space at different scales. Turner, Mukeherjee, and Boyer showed that one can reconstruct a simplicial complex embedded in R^3 using persistence diagrams generated from all possible height filtrations (an uncountably infinite number of directions). In this paper, we present an algorithm for reconstructing plane graphs K=(V,E) in R^2 , i.e., a planar graph with vertices in general position and a straight-line embedding, from a quadratic number height filtrations and their respective persistence diagrams., Comment: Updated our document for clarity in response to comments by reviewers at CCCG. We show that `Oumuamua's excited spin could be in a high energy LAM state, which implies that its shape could be far from the highly elongated shape found in previous studies. CLEAN and ANOVA algorithms are used to analyze `Oumuamua's lightcurve using 818 observations over 29.3~days. Two fundamental periodicities are found at frequencies (2.77$\pm$0.11) and (6.42$\pm$0.18)~cycles/day, corresponding to (8.67$\pm$0.34)~h and (3.74$\pm$0.11)~h, respectively. The phased data show that the lightcurve does not repeat in a simple manner, but approximately shows a double minimum at 2.77~cycles/day and a single minimum at 6.42~cycles/day. This is characteristic of an excited spin state. `Oumuamua could be spinning in either the long (LAM) or short (SAM) axis mode. For both, the long axis precesses around the total angular momentum vector with an average period of (8.67$\pm$0.34)~h. For the three LAMs we have found, the possible rotation periods around the long axis are 6.58, 13.15, or 54.48~h, with 54.48~h being the most likely. `Oumuamua may also be nutating with respective periods of half of these values. We have also found two possible SAM states where `Oumuamua oscillates around the long axis with possible periods at 13.15 and 54.48~h, the latter as the most likely. In this case any nutation will occur with the same periods. Determination of the spin state, the amplitude of the nutation, the direction of the TAMV, and the average total spin period may be possible with a direct model fit to the lightcurve. We find that `Oumuamua is "cigar-shaped"', if close to its lowest rotational energy, and an extremely oblate spheroid if close to its highest energy state for its total angular momentum., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We give a simple and direct treatment of the strong convergence of quantum random walks to quantum stochastic operator cocycles, via the semigroup decomposition of such cocycles. Our approach also delivers convergence of the pointwise product of quantum random walks to the quantum stochastic Trotter product of the respective limit cocycles, thereby revealing the algebraic structure of the limiting procedure. We prove that the only entrywise transforms of rectangular matrices which preserve total positivity or total non-negativity are either constant or linear. This follows from an extended classification of preservers of these two properties for matrices of fixed dimension. In previous work [Adv. Math. 298, pp. 325-368, 2016], the structure of the simultaneous kernels of Hadamard powers of any positive semidefinite matrix were described. Key ingredients in the proof included a novel stratification of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and a well-known theorem of Hershkowitz, Neumann, and Schneider, which classifies the Hermitian positive semidefinite matrices whose entries are $0$ or $1$ in modulus. The theory of quasifree quantum stochastic calculus for infinite-dimensional noise is developed within the framework of Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus. The question of uniqueness for the covariance amplitude with respect to which a given unitary quantum stochastic cocycle is quasifree is addressed, and related to the minimality of the corresponding stochastic dilation. We analyze the observed radial distribution of column densities of water-ice particulates embedded in the primary jet region of 103Ps inner coma at altitudes between 439 and 1967 m (Protopapa et al, 2014) and determine the speed and acceleration of particles and their mass flow within the filaments of the jet. This is done by applying a CO2 driven type IIa jet model proposed by Belton (2010) The model utilizes water-ice particles dislodged in the source regions of the jet filaments and accelerated by CO2 to explain the radial distribution of water-ice particulates. We provide an explanation for the remarkably different radial distribution of refractory dust particles by hypothesizing that the majority of the dust originates directly from the nucleus surface in interfilament regions of the jet complex and is accelerated by H2O. Our model provides a mass-flow of water from the J1 jet complex that is 40 times greater than the constant speed sublimation model discussed by Protopapa et al. but is still too small to explain the hyperactivity of the comet. Speeds in the flow are increased by a factor up to 20 over those found by Protopapa et al. To account for the hyperactivity, most of the mass dislodged in the filament source regions must be in weakly accelerated large chunks that achieve only low speeds en route to the region of observation. These chunks soon leave the filamentary jet structure due to the rotation of the nucleus and do not contribute to the column densities observed at higher altitudes in the jet filaments.

We classify all functions which, when applied term by term, leave invariant the sequences of moments of positive measures on the real line. Rather unexpectedly, these functions are built of absolutely monotonic components, or reflections of them, with possible discontinuities at the endpoints. Even more surprising is the fact that functions preserving moments of three point masses must preserve moments of all measures. Our proofs exploit the semidefiniteness of the associated Hankel matrices and the complete monotonicity of the Laplace transforms of the underlying measures. As a byproduct, we characterize the entrywise transforms which preserve totally non-negative Hankel matrices, and those which preserve all totally non-negative matrices. The latter class is surprisingly rigid: such maps must be constant or linear. In recent work of the authors, it was shown how to use any finite quantum stop time to stop the CCR flow and its strongly continuous isometric cocycles (Q. J. Math. 65:1145-1164, 2014). The stopped cocycle was shown to satisfy a stopped form of the cocycle identity, valid for deterministic increments of the time used for stopping. A classical result by Schoenberg (1942) identifies all real-valued functions that preserve positive semidefiniteness (psd) when applied entrywise to matrices of arbitrary dimension. Schoenberg's work has continued to attract significant interest, including renewed recent attention due to applications in high-dimensional statistics. However, despite a great deal of effort in the area, an effective characterization of entrywise functions preserving positivity in a fixed dimension remains elusive to date. As a first step, we characterize new classes of polynomials preserving positivity in fixed dimension. The proof of our main result is representation theoretic, and employs Schur polynomials. An alternate, variational approach also leads to several interesting consequences including (a) a hitherto unexplored Schubert cell-type stratification of the cone of psd matrices, (b) new connections between generalized Rayleigh quotients of Hadamard powers and Schur polynomials, and (c) a description of the joint kernels of Hadamard powers., Comment: Minor updates of abstract+references. A classical theorem proved in 1942 by I.J. Schoenberg describes all real-valued functions that preserve positivity when applied entrywise to positive semidefinite matrices of arbitrary size; such functions are necessarily analytic with non-negative Taylor coefficients. Despite the great deal of interest generated by this theorem, a characterization of functions preserving positivity for matrices of fixed dimension is not known. In this paper, we provide a complete description of polynomials of degree $N$ that preserve positivity when applied entrywise to matrices of dimension $N$. This is the key step for us then to obtain negative lower bounds on the coefficients of analytic functions so that these functions preserve positivity in a prescribed dimension. The proof of the main technical inequality is representation theoretic, and employs the theory of Schur polynomials. Interpreted in the context of linear pencils of matrices, our main results provide a closed-form expression for the lowest critical value, revealing at the same time an unexpected spectral discontinuity phenomenon. Tight linear matrix inequalities for Hadamard powers of matrices and a sharp asymptotic bound for the matrix-cube problem involving Hadamard powers are obtained as applications. Positivity preservers are also naturally interpreted as solutions of a variational inequality involving generalized Rayleigh quotients. We investigate the size-frequency distribution of Jupiter Family comets to determine whether they are primordial accreted objects or collisional fragments. We develop a list of effective radii and their uncertainties for 161 active JFCs and compute the observed size-frequency distribution using a Probability Index technique. The radii range from 0.2 to 15.4 km. This is then corrected for the effects of observational selection using a model published earlier by Meech et al.(2004). We estimate that the total number of active JFCs between 0.2 and 15.4 km is approximately 2300.The active JFC size-frequency distribution, over the range from 0.6 to 10 km where it is best defined, is found to be closer to an exponential distribution in character than a power-law. We then develop a statistical model, based on the assumption of a steady state, for converting the distribution of active JFCs to the SFD of the source population among the TNOs. The model includes the effects of devolatization (that produces a large sub-class of defunct nuclei) and surficial mass-loss. Comparison with available TNO observations shows that to simultaneously attain continuity with the data on objects in the hot TNO population (Fuentes et al,2010), satisfy constraints on the number of TNOs set by the occultation detections of Schlichting et al.(2012), and to remain within upper limits set by the Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey (TAOS; Zhang et al,2013) the total JFC population must contain a large fraction of small defunct nuclei. The effective power-law index of the inferred TNO differential SFD between 1 and 10 km is -4.5 +/- 0.5 indicating a population in this range that is not in fully relaxed collisional equilibrium. We conclude that the cometary nuclei visited by spacecraft and many JFCs are primordial accreted objects relatively unaffected by collisional evolution., Comment: 47 pages, 12 Figures, 2 Tables. It is shown how to use non-commutative stopping times in order to stop the CCR flow of arbitrary index and also its isometric cocycles, i.e., left operator Markovian cocycles on Boson Fock space. Stopping the CCR flow yields a homomorphism from the semigroup of stopping times, equipped with the convolution product, into the semigroup of unital endomorphisms of the von Neumann algebra of bounded operators on the ambient Fock space. A convergence theorem is obtained for quantum random walks with particles in an arbitrary normal state. It is shown how to construct *-homomorphic quantum stochastic Feller cocycles for certain unbounded generators, and so obtain dilations of strongly continuous quantum dynamical semigroups on C* algebras; this generalises the construction of a classical Feller process and semigroup from a given generator. The construction is possible provided the generator satisfies an invariance property for some dense subalgebra A_0 of the C* algebra A and obeys the necessary structure relations; the iterates of the generator, when applied to a generating set for A_0, must satisfy a growth condition. Furthermore, it is assumed that either the subalgebra A_0 is generated by isometries and A is universal, or A_0 contains its square roots. These conditions are verified in four cases: classical random walks on discrete groups, Rebolledo's symmetric quantum exclusion processes and flows on the non-commutative torus and the universal rotation algebra., Comment: 34 pages. We develop fully noncommutative Feynman-Kac formulae by employing quantum stochastic processes. To this end we establish some theory for perturbing quantum stochastic flows on von Neumann algebras by multiplier cocycles. Multiplier cocycles are constructed via quantum stochastic differential equations whose coefficients are driven by the flow. The resulting class of cocycles is characterised under alternative assumptions of separability or Markov regularity. We have used the Spitzer 22-um peakup array to observe thermal emission from the nucleus and trail of comet 103P/Hartley 2, the target of NASA's Deep Impact Extended mission. The comet was observed on UT 2008 August 12 and 13, while the comet was 5.5 AU from the Sun. We obtained two 200-frame sets of photometric imaging over a 2.7-hour period. To within the errors of the measurement, we find no detection of any temporal variation between the two images. The comet showed extended emission beyond a point source in the form of a faint trail directed along the comet's anti-velocity vector. After modeling and removing the trail emission, a NEATM model for the nuclear emission with beaming parameter of 0.95 +/- 0.20 indicates a small effective radius for the nucleus of 0.57 +/- 0.08 km and low geometric albedo 0.028 +/- 0.009 (1 sigma). With this nucleus size and a water production rate of 3 x 10^28 molecules s-1 at perihelion (A'Hearn et al. 1995) we estimate that ~100% of the surface area is actively emitting volatile material at perihelion. Reports of emission activity out to ~5 AU (Lowry et al. 2001, Snodgrass et al. 2008) support our finding of a highly active nuclear surface. Compared to Deep Impact's first target, comet 9P/Tempel 1, Hartley 2's nucleus is one-fifth as wide (and about one-hundredth the mass) while producing a similar amount of outgassing at perihelion with about 13 times the active surface fraction. Unlike Tempel 1, it should be highly susceptible to jet driven spin-up torques, and so could be rotating at a much higher frequency. It is shown how to construct quantum random walks with particles in an arbitrary faithful normal state. A convergence theorem is obtained for such walks, which demonstrates a thermalisation effect: the limit cocycle obeys a quantum stochastic differential equation without gauge terms. After a review of how Boson Fock space (of arbitrary multiplicity) may be approximated by a countable Hilbert-space tensor product (known as toy Fock space) it is shown that vacuum-adapted multiple quantum Wiener integrals of bounded operators may be expressed as limits of sums of operators defined on this toy space, with strong convergence on the exponential domain. The vacuum-adapted quantum Ito product formula is derived with the aid of this approximation and a brief pointer is given towards the unbounded case.

Quantum random walks are constructed on operator spaces with the aid of matrix-space lifting, a type of ampliation intermediate between those provided by spatial and ultraweak tensor products. Using a form of Wiener-Ito decomposition, a Donsker-type theorem is proved, showing that these walks, after suitable scaling, converge in a strong sense to vacuum cocycles: these are vacuum-adapted processes which are Feller cocycles in the sense of Lindsay and Wills. This is employed to give a new proof of the existence of *-homomorphic quantum stochastic dilations for completely positive contraction semigroups on von Neumann algebras and separable unital C* algebras. We report on the Hubble Space Telescope program to observe periodic comet 9P/Tempel 1 in conjunction with NASA's Deep Impact mission. Our objectives were to study the generation and evolution of the coma resulting from the impact and to obtain wide-band images of the visual outburst generated by the impact. Two observing campaigns utilizing a total of 17 HST orbits were carried out: the first occurred on 2005 June 13-14 and fortuitously recorded the appearance of a new, short-lived fan in the sunward direction on June 14. The principal campaign began two days before impact and was followed by contiguous orbits through impact plus several hours and then snapshots one, seven, and twelve days later. All of the observations were made using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). For imaging, the ACS High Resolution Channel (HRC) provides a spatial resolution of 36 km (16 km/pixel) at the comet at the time of impact. Baseline images of the comet, made prior to impact, photometrically resolved the comet's nucleus. The derived diameter, 6.1 km, is in excellent agreement with the 6.0 +/- 0.2 km diameter derived from the spacecraft imagers. Following the impact, the HRC images illustrate the temporal and spatial evolution of the ejecta cloud and allow for a determination of its expansion velocity distribution. One of the goals of the Hubble Space Telescope program to observe periodic comet 9P/Tempel 1 in conjunction with NASA's Deep Impact mission was to study the generation and evolution of the gaseous coma resulting from the impact. For this purpose, the Solar Blind Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys was used with the F140LP filter which is sensitive primarily to the ultraviolet emission (>1400 A) from the CO Fourth Positive system. Following the impact we detected an increase in brightness, which if all due to CO corresponds to 1.5 x 10^31 molecules or a mass of 6.6 x 10^5 kg, an amount that would normally be produced by 7-10 hours of quiescent outgassing from the comet. This number is less than or equal to 10% of the number of water molecules excavated, and suggests that the volatile content of the material excavated by the impact did not differ significantly from the surface or near sub-surface material responsible for the quiescent outgassing of the comet., Comment: 10 pages, 4 postscript figures.
