Ba2ScSbO6 (BSS) has been synthesized in polycrystalline form by solid state reaction. Structural characterization of the compound was done through X-ray diffraction (XRD) followed by Riedvelt analysis of the XRD pattern. The crystal structure is cubic, space group Fm-3m (No. 225. Optical band-gap of the present system has been calculated using the UV-Vis Spectroscopy to be 4.2eV. A detailed study of the electronic properties has also been carried out using the Full-Potential Linear Augmented Plane Wave (FPLAPW) as implemented in WIEN2k. Ba2CoWO6 (BCoW) has been synthesized in polycrystalline form by solid state reaction at 1200C. Structural characterization of the compound was done through X-ray diffraction (XRD) followed by Rietveld analysis of the XRD pattern. The crystal structure is cubic, space group Fm-3m (No 225) with the lattice parameter, a=8.210A. Optical band-gap of the present system has been calculated using the UV-Vis Spectroscopy and Kubelka-Munk function, its value being 2.45 eV. A detailed study of the electronic properties has also been carried out using the density functional theory (DFT) techniques implemented on WIEN2k. Importance of electron-electron interaction between the Co ions leading to half-metallic behavior, crystal and exchange splitting together with the hybridization between O and Co, W has been investigated using the total and partial density of states., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, submitted to 58th DAE-SSPS 2013

A remarkably high value of specific capacitance of 450 F/g has been observed through electrochemical measurements in the electrode made of multiferroic Bismuth Ferrite (BFO) in the form of nanorods protruding out. These BFO nanorods were developed on porous Anodised Alumina (AAO) templates using wet chemical technique. Diameters of nanorods were in the range of 20-100 nm. The high capacitance is attributed to the nanostructure. The active surface charge has been evaluated electrochemically by cyclic voltammetry (CV) at different scanning rates and charge-discharge studies. The specific capacitances were constant after several cycles of charge-discharge leading to their useful application in devices. Remarkably high values of polarization as well as a significant magnetic susceptibility have been observed in multiferroic Bismuth Ferrite (BFO) in the form of nanorods protruding out. These were developed on porous Anodised Alumina (AAO) templates using wet chemical technique. Diameters of nanorods are in the range of 20-100 nm. The high values of polarization and magnetic susceptibility are attributed to the BFO nanorod structures giving rise to the directionality. There is no leakage current in P-E loop examined at various frequencies. Measurements of the critical current density (Jc) by magnetization and the upper critical field (Hc2) by magnetoresistance have been performed for hafnium-doped MgB2. There has been a remarkable enhancement of Jc as compared to that by ion irradiation without any appreciable decrease in Tc, which is beneficial from the point of view of applications. The irreversibility line extracted from Jc shows an upward shift. In addition, there has been an increase in the upper critical field which indicates that Hf partially substitutes for Mg. Hyperfine interaction parameters obtained from time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) measurements revealed the formation of HfB and HfB2 phases along with the substitution of Hf. A possible explanation is given for the role of these species in the enhancement of Jc in MgB2 superconductor.

The scaling behavior of the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect is studied by deforming a substitutional alloy, Al-2.5%Mg and an interstitial alloy, low carbon steel (0.15%C, 0.33%Mn, 0.04%P, 0.05%S, 0.15%Si and rest Iron) at room temperature for a wide range of strain rates. To reveal the exact scaling nature, the time series data of true stress vs. time, obtained during the tensile deformation (corrected for drift due to strain hardening by polynomial fitting method), are analyzed by two complementary methods: the standard deviation analysis and the diffusion entropy analysis. Plastic flow behavior of low carbon steel has been studied at room temperature during tensile deformation by varying the initial strain rate of 3.3x10e-4 1/sec to the final strain rate ranging from 1.33x10e-3 1/sec to 2.0x10e-3 1/sec at a fixed engineering strain of 12%. Haasen plot revealed that the mobile dislocation density remained almost invariant at the juncture where there was a sudden increase in stress with the change in strain rate and the plastic flow was solely dependent on the velocity of mobile dislocations. In that critical regime, the variation of stress with time was fitted with a Boltzman type Sigmoid function. The increase in stress was found to increase with final strain rate and the time elapsed to attain these stress values showed a decreasing trend. Both of these parameters saturated asymptotically at higher final strain rate.

Core level X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) studies have been carried out on polycrystalline MgB_2 pellets over the whole binding energy range with a view to having an idea of the charge state of Magnesium (Mg). We observe 3 distinct peaks in Mg 2p spectra at 49.3 eV (trace), 51.3 eV (major) and 54.0 eV (trace), corresponding to metallic Mg, MgB_2 and MgCO_3 or, divalent Mg species respectively. Similar trend has been noticed in Mg 2s spectra. The binding energy of Mg in MgB_2 is lower than that corresponding to Mg(2+), indicative of the fact that the charge state of Mg in MgB2 is less than (2+). Lowering of the formal charge of Mg promotes the sigma to pi electron transfer in Boron (B) giving rise to holes on the top of the sigma-band which are involved in coupling with B E_2g phonons for superconductivity. Through this charge transfer, Mg plays a positive role in hole superconductivity. B 1s spectra consist of 3 peaks corresponding to MgB_2, boron and B_2O_3. 160 MeV Neon ion irradiation has been carried out on MgB2 polycrystalline pellets at various doses. There has not been any significant change in Tc except at the highest dose of 1x10^15 ions/cm^2. Increase in resistivity has been noticed. Resistivity data has been fitted with Bloch-Gruneisen function and the values of Debye temperature, residual resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistivity have been extracted for irradiated as well as unirradiated samples. The increase in the resistivity of irradiated samples has been explained in the light of damage in the 3D pi bonding network of B., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures
