In this paper, we adapt the characterisation of the spin representation via exterior forms to the generalised spin$^r$ context. We find new invariant spin$^r$ spinors on the projective spaces $\mathbb{CP}^n$, $\mathbb{HP}^n$, and the Cayley plane $\mathbb{OP}^2$ for all their homogeneous realisations. Specifically, for each of these realisations, we provide a complete description of the space of invariant spin$^r$ for the minimum value of $r$ for which this space is non-zero. In this work, we present a methodology for devising forward-backward methods for finding zeros in the sum of a finite number of maximally monotone operators. We extend the framework and techniques from [SIAM J. Optim., 34 (2024), pp. 1569-1594] to cover the case involving a finite number of cocoercive operators, which should be directly evaluated instead of computing their resolvent. The algorithms are induced by three graphs that determine how the algorithm variables interact with each other and how they are combined to compute each resolvent. The hypotheses on these graphs ensure that the algorithms obtained have minimal lifting and are frugal, meaning that the ambient space of the underlying fixed point operator has minimal dimension and that each resolvent and each cocoercive operator is evaluated only once per iteration. This framework not only allows to recover some known methods, but also to generate new ones, as the forward-backward algorithm induced by a complete graph. We conclude with a numerical experiment showing how the choice of graphs influences the performance of the algorithms.

In this paper we propose an approach for solving systems of nonlinear equations without computing function derivatives. Motivated by the application area of tomographic absorption spectroscopy, which is a highly-nonlinear problem with variables coupling, we consider a situation where straightforward translation to a fixed point problem is not possible because the operators that represent the relevant systems of nonlinear equations are not self-mappings, i.e., they operate between spaces of different dimensions. To overcome this difficulty we suggest an "alternating common fixed points algorithm" that acts alternatingly on the different vector variables. This approach translates the original problem to a common fixed point problem for which iterative algorithms are abound and exhibits a viable alternative to translation to an optimization problem, which usually requires derivatives information. However, to apply any of these iterative algorithms requires to ascertain the conditions that appear in their convergence theorems. To circumvent the need to verify conditions for convergence, we propose and motivate a derivative-free algorithm that better suits the tomographic absorption spectroscopy problem at hand and is even further improved by applying to it the superiorization approach. For each $n\in\mathbb{N}$, we construct a Riemannian spin manifold carrying a generalised Killing spinor with $n$ distinct eigenvalues, providing the first known examples of such objects for $n>4$. For each left-invariant metric on a three-dimensional Lie group, we explicitly find all invariant generalised Killing spinors. We find many new examples with three distinct eigenvalues, and we prove that, in some cases, this is the generic situation., Comment: 17 pages

In spite of the interest in the two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) experimentally found at surfaces and interfaces, important uncertainties remain about the observed insulator--metal transitions (IMTs). Here we show how an explicit improper coupling of carrier sources with a relevant soft mode significantly affects the transition. The analysis presented here for 2DEGs at polar interfaces is based on group theory, Landau-Ginzburg theory, and illustrated with first-principles calculations for the prototypical case of the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface, for which such a structural transition has recently been observed. This direct coupling implies that the appearance of the soft mode is always accompanied by carriers. For sufficiently strong coupling an avalanche-like first-order IMT is predicted.

Triangulenes are open-shell triangular graphene flakes with total spin increasing with their size. In the last years, on-surface-synthesis strategies have permitted fabricating and engineering triangulenes of various sizes and structures with atomic precision. However, direct proof of the increasing total spin with their size remains elusive. In this work, we report the combined in-solution and on-surface synthesis of a large nitrogen-doped triangulene (aza-[5]-triangulene) and the detection of its high spin ground state on a Au(111) surface. Bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy images uncovered radical states distributed along the zigzag edges, which were detected as weak zero-bias resonances in scanning tunneling spectra. These spectral features reveal the partial Kondo screening of a high spin state. Through a combination of several simulation tools, we find that the observed distribution of radical states is explained by a quintet ground state (S = 2), instead of the expected quartet state (S = 3/2), confirming the positively charged state of the molecule on the surface. We further provide a qualitative description of the change of (anti)aromaticity introduced by N-substitution, and its role in the charge stabilization on a surface, resulting in a S = 2 aza-[5]-triangulene on Au(111)., Comment: 8 pages with 4 figures

In this paper we introduce the Boosted Double-proximal Subgradient Algorithm (BDSA), a novel splitting algorithm designed to address general structured nonsmooth and nonconvex mathematical programs expressed as sums and differences of composite functions. BDSA exploits the combined nature of subgradients from the data and proximal steps, and integrates a line-search procedure to enhance its performance. While BDSA encompasses existing schemes proposed in the literature, it extends its applicability to more diverse problem domains. We establish the convergence of BDSA under the Kurdyka--Lojasiewicz property and provide an analysis of its convergence rate. To evaluate the effectiveness of BDSA, we introduce a novel family of challenging test functions with an abundance of critical points. We conduct comparative evaluations demonstrating its ability to effectively escape non-optimal critical points. Additionally, we present two practical applications of BDSA for testing its efficacy, namely, a constrained minimum-sum-of-squares clustering problem and a nonconvex generalization of Heron's problem.

Traditionally, it has been assumed that the stopping of a swift ion travelling through matter can be understood in terms of two essentially independent components, i.e. electronic vs. nuclear. Performing extensive Ehrenfest MD simulations of the process of proton irradiation of water ice that accurately describe not only the non-adiabatic dynamics of the electrons but also of the nuclei, we have found a stopping mechanism involving the interplay of the electronic and nuclear subsystems. This effect, which consists in a kinetic energy transfer from the projectile to the target nuclei thanks to the perturbations of the electronic density caused by the irradiation, is fundamentally different from the atomic displacements and collision cascades characteristic of nuclear stopping. Moreover, it shows a marked isotopic effect depending on the composition of the target, being relevant mostly for light water as opposed to heavy water. This result is consistent with long-standing experimental results which remained unexplained so far.

Spinorial methods have proven to be a powerful tool to study geometric properties of spin manifolds. Our aim is to continue the spinorial study of manifolds that are not necessarily spin. We introduce and study the notion of $G$-invariance of spin$^r$ structures on a manifold $M$ equipped with an action of a Lie group $G$. For the case when $M$ is a homogeneous $G$-space, we prove a classification result of these invariant structures in terms of the isotropy representation. As an example, we study the invariant spin$^r$ structures for all the homogeneous realisations of the spheres., Comment: 22 pages

When developing tools for automated cortical segmentation, the ability to produce topologically correct segmentations is important in order to compute geometrically valid morphometry measures. In practice, accurate cortical segmentation is challenged by image artifacts and the highly convoluted anatomy of the cortex itself. To address this, we propose a novel deep learning-based cortical segmentation method in which prior knowledge about the geometry of the cortex is incorporated into the network during the training process. We design a loss function which uses the theory of Laplace's equation applied to the cortex to locally penalize unresolved boundaries between tightly folded sulci. Using an ex vivo MRI dataset of human medial temporal lobe specimens, we demonstrate that our approach outperforms baseline segmentation networks, both quantitatively and qualitatively., Comment: Accepted at the 28th biennial international conference on Information Processing in Medical Imaging (IPMI 2023)

Understanding the generation and evolution of defects induced in matter by ion irradiation is of fundamental importance to estimate the degradation of functional properties of materials. Computational approaches used in dierent communities, from space radiation eects to nuclear energy experiments, are based on a number of approximations that, among others, traditionally neglect the coupling between electronic and ionic degrees of freedom in the description of displacements. In this work, we study collision cascades in GaAs, including the electronic stopping power for selfprojectiles in dierent directions obtained via real time Time Dependent Density Functional Theory in Molecular Dynamics simulations of collision cascades, using the recent electron-phonon model and the previously developed two-temperature model. We show that the former can be well applied to describe the eects of electronic stopping in molecular dynamics simulations of collision cascades in a multielement semiconductor and that the number of defects is considerably aected by electronic stopping eects. The results are also discussed in the wider context of the commonly used non-ionizing energy loss model to estimate degradation of materials by cumulative displacements.

We present real-time time-dependent density-functional-theory calculations of the electronic stopping power for negative and positive projectiles (electrons, protons, antiprotons and muons) moving through liquid water. After correction for finite mass effects, the nonlinear stopping power obtained in this work is significantly different from the previously known results from semi-empirical calculations based on the dielectric response formalism. Linear-nonlinear discrepancies are found both in the maximum value of the stopping power and the Bragg peak's position. Our results indicate the importance of the nonlinear description of electronic processes, particularly for electron projectiles, which are modeled here as classical point charges. Our findings also confirm the expectation that the quantum nature of the electron projectile should substantially influence the stopping power around the Bragg peak and below., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

By harvesting a wider range of the solar spectrum, intermediate band solar cells (IBSCs) can achieve efficiencies 50% higher than conventional single-junction solar cells. For this, additional requirements are imposed to the light-absorbing semiconductor, which must contain a collection of in-gap levels, called intermediate band (IB), optically coupled to but thermally decoupled from the valence and conduction bands (VB and CB). Quantum-dot-in-perovskite (QDiP) solids, where inorganic quantum dots (QDs) are embedded in a halide perovskite matrix, have been recently suggested as a promising material platform for developing IBSCs. In this work, QDiP solids with excellent morphological and structural quality and strong absorption and emission related to the presence of in-gap QD levels are synthesized. With them, QDiP-based IBSCs are fabricated and, by means of temperature-dependent photocurrent measurements, it is shown that the IB is strongly thermally decoupled from the valence and conduction bands. The activation energy of the IB$\rightarrow$CB thermal escape of electrons is measured to be 204 meV, resulting in the mitigation of this detrimental process even under room-temperature operation, thus fulfilling the first mandatory requisite to enable high-efficiency IBSCs.

This paper addresses the study of a new class of nonsmooth optimization problems, where the objective is represented as a difference of two generally nonconvex functions. We propose and develop a novel Newton-type algorithm to solving such problems, which is based on the coderivative generated second-order subdifferential (generalized Hessian) and employs advanced tools of variational analysis. Well-posedness properties of the proposed algorithm are derived under fairly general requirements, while constructive convergence rates are established by using additional assumptions including the Kurdyka--{\L}ojasiewicz condition. We provide applications of the main algorithm to solving a general class of nonsmooth nonconvex problems of structured optimization that encompasses, in particular, optimization problems with explicit constraints. Finally, applications and numerical experiments are given for solving practical problems that arise in biochemical models, constrained quadratic programming, etc., where advantages of our algorithms are demonstrated in comparison with some known techniques and results., Comment: 38 pages

A standardized method for measuring thermophotovoltaic (TPV) efficiency has not been yet established, which makes the reported results difficult to compare. Besides, most of the TPV efficiencies reported to date have been obtained using small view factors, i.e., large cell-to-emitter distances, so the impact of the series resistance is usually underestimated, and the optical cavity effects, i.e., the multiple reflections taking place between the emitter and the cell, are not accounted for experimentally. In this work, we present an experimental setup able to measure the TPV efficiency under high view factors (up to 0.98), by using small emitter-to-cell distances (< 1 mm). This allows a more accurate direct measurement of the TPV efficiency at higher power densities than previous works. As a result, a TPV efficiency of 26.4+-0.1 % and a power density of 4.3+-0.8 W/cm2 have been obtained for an InGaAs TPV cell with a back surface reflector irradiated by a graphite thermal emitter at 1592 C.

We present a code modularization approach to design efficient and massively parallel cubic and linear-scaling solvers for electronic structure calculations using atomic orbitals. The modular implementation of the orbital minimization method, in which linear algebra and parallelization issues are handled via external libraries, is demonstrated in the SIESTA code. The DBCSR and ScaLAPACK libraries are used for algebraic operations with sparse and dense matrices, respectively. The MatrixSwitch and libOMM libraries, recently developed within the Electronic Structure Library, facilitate switching between different matrix formats and implement the energy minimization. We show results comparing the performance of several cubic-scaling algorithms, and also demonstrate the parallel performance of the linear-scaling solvers, and their supremacy over the cubic-scaling solvers for insulating systems with sizes of several hundreds of atoms., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

FePS$_3$ is a prototype van der Waals layered antiferromagnet and a Mott insulator under ambient conditions, which has been recently reported to go through a pressure-induced dimensionality crossover and an insulator-to-metal transition. These transitions also lead to the appearance of a novel magnetic metallic state. To further understand these emergent structural and physical properties, we have performed a first-principles study using van der Waals and Hubbard $U$ corrected density functional theory including a random structure search. In this paper we study the split minimization problem that consists of two constrained minimization problems in two separate spaces that are connected via a linear operator that maps one space into the other. To handle the data of such a problem we develop a superiorization approach that can reach a feasible point with reduced (not necessarily minimal) objective function values. The superiorization methodology is based on interlacing the iterative steps of two separate and independent iterative processes by perturbing the iterates of one process according to the steps dictated by the other process. We include in our developed method two novel elements. The first one is the permission to restart the perturbations in the superiorized algorithm which results in a significant acceleration and increases the computational efficiency. The second element is the ability to independently superiorize subvectors. The phenomenological theory for the polar instability giving rise to a two-dimensional electron gas at perovskite interfaces is hereby extended to include the coupling to perovskite tilts. A Landau theory for homogeneous tilts is first explored, setting the scene for the further, more realistic Landau-Ginzburg theory describing varying tilt amplitudes across a thin film. The theory is also generalized to account for the response to an applied electric field normal to the interface, which allows a finer control on phase transitions. The conventionally described physics of a single metal-insulator transition is substantially enriched by the coupling, the model describing various scenarios with one or two transitions, possibly continuous or discontinuous. The process by which a nuclear projectile is decelerated by the electrons of the condensed matter it traverses is currently being studied by following the explicit dynamics of projectile and electrons from first principles in a simulation box with a sample of the host matter in periodic boundary conditions. The approach has been quite successful for diverse systems even in the strong-coupling regime of maximal dissipation. This technique is here revisited for periodic solids in the light of the Floquet theory of stopping, a time-periodic scattering framework characterizing the stationary dynamicalsolutions for a constant velocity projectile in an infinite solid. The effect of proton projectiles in diamond is studied under that light, using time-dependent density-functional theory in real time. The Floquet quasi-energy conserving stationary scattering regime, characterized by time-periodic properties such as particle density and the time derivative of energy, is obtained for a converged system size of one thousand atoms. The validity of the customary calculation of electronic stopping power from the average slope of the density-functional total energy is discussed. In this work, we study resolvent splitting algorithms for solving composite monotone inclusion problems. The objective of these general problems is finding a zero in the sum of maximally monotone operators composed with linear operators. Our main contribution is establishing the first primal-dual splitting algorithm for composite monotone inclusions with minimal lifting. Specifically, the proposed scheme reduces the dimension of the product space where the underlying fixed point operator is defined, in comparison to other algorithms, without requiring additional evaluations of the resolvent operators. We prove the convergence of this new algorithm and analyze its performance in a problem arising in image deblurring and denoising. This work also contributes to the theory of resolvent splitting algorithms by extending the minimal lifting theorem recently proved by Malitsky and Tam to schemes with resolvent parameters.

The computational study of DNA and its interaction with ligands is a highly relevant area of research, with significant consequences for developing new therapeutic strategies. However, the computational description of such large and complex systems requires considering interactions of different types. All these considerations imply a real challenge for computational chemistry. Using quantum methods for the entire system requires significant computational resources, with improvements in parallelization and optimization of theoretical strategies. Computational methods, such as LS-DFT and DLPNO-CCSD(T), may allow performing ab initio QM calculations, including explicitly the electronic structure for large biological systems, at a reasonable computing time. In this work, we study the interaction of small molecules and cations with DNA (duplex-DNA and G-quadruplexes), comparing different computational methods: a linear-scaling DFT (LS-DFT) at LMKLL/DZDP level of theory, semi-empirical methods (PM6-DH2 and PM7), mixed QM/MM, and DLPNO-CCSD(T). Our goal is to demonstrate the adequacy of LS-DFT to treat the different types of interactions present in DNA-dependent systems. We show that LMKLL/DZDP using SIESTA can yield very accurate geometries and energetics in all the different systems considered in this work: duplex DNA (dDNA), phenanthroline intercalating dDNA, G-quadruplexes, and Metal-G-tetrads considering alkaline metals of different sizes. As far as we know, this is the first time that full G-quadruplex geometry optimizations have been carried out using a DFT method thanks to its linear-scaling capabilities. Moreover, we show that LS-DFT provides high-quality structures, and some semi-empirical Hamiltonian can also yield suitable geometries. However, DLPNO-CCSD(T) and LS-DFT are the only methods that accurately describe interaction energies for all the systems considered in our study., Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures

Modelling the inelastic scattering of electrons in water is fundamental, given their crucial role in biological damage. In Monte Carlo track-structure codes used to assess biological damage, the energy loss function, from which cross sections are extracted, is derived from different semi-empirical optical models. Only recently, first ab-initio results for the energy loss function and cross-sections in water became available. For benchmarking purpose, in this work, we present ab-initio linear-response time-dependent density functional theory calculations of the energy loss function of liquid water. We calculated the inelastic scattering cross sections, inelastic mean free paths, and electronic stopping powers and compared our results with recent calculations and experimental data showing a good agreement. In addition, we provide an in-depth analysis of the contributions of different molecular orbitals, species, and orbital angular momenta to the total energy loss function. Moreover, we present single-differential cross sections computed for each molecular orbital channel, which should prove useful for Monte-Carlo track-structure simulations., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures

We propose BAPose, a novel bottom-up approach that achieves state-of-the-art results for multi-person pose estimation. Our end-to-end trainable framework leverages a disentangled multi-scale waterfall architecture and incorporates adaptive convolutions to infer keypoints more precisely in crowded scenes with occlusions. The multi-scale representations, obtained by the disentangled waterfall module in BAPose, leverage the efficiency of progressive filtering in the cascade architecture, while maintaining multi-scale fields-of-view comparable to spatial pyramid configurations. Our results on the challenging COCO and CrowdPose datasets demonstrate that BAPose is an efficient and robust framework for multi-person pose estimation, achieving significant improvements on state-of-the-art accuracy.

A recently proposed theoretical framework for the description of electronic quantum friction for constant-velocity nuclear projectiles traversing periodic crystals is here implemented using a local basis representation. The theory requires a change of reference frame to that of the projectile, and a basis set transformation for the target basis functions to a gliding basis is presented, which is time-periodic but does not displace in space with respect to the projectile, allowing a local-basis Floquet impurity-scattering formalism to be used. It is illustrated for a one-dimensional single-band tight-binding model, as the simplest paradigmatic example, displaying the qualitative behaviour of the formalism. The time-dependent non-orthogonality of the gliding basis requires care in the proper (simplest) definition of a local projectile perturbation. The Fermi level is tilted with a slope given by the projectile velocity, which complicates integration over occupied states. It is solved by a recurrent application of the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, in analogy with previous non-equilibrium treatment of electron ballistic transport. Aiming towards a first-principles mean-field-like implementation, the final result is the time-periodic particle density in the region around the projectile, describing the stroboscopically stationary perturbation cloud around the projectile, out of which other quantities can be obtained, such as the electronic stopping power.

In this work, we propose and analyse forward-backward-type algorithms for finding a zero of the sum of finitely many monotone operators, which are not based on reduction to a two operator inclusion in the product space. Each iteration of the studied algorithms requires one resolvent evaluation per set-valued operator, one forward evaluation per cocoercive operator, and two forward evaluations per monotone operator. Unlike existing methods, the structure of the proposed algorithms are suitable for distributed, decentralised implementation in ring networks without needing global summation to enforce consensus between nodes., Comment: 19 pages

The electronic stopping power ($S_e$) of water vapor (H$_2$O), hydrogen (H$_2$) and oxygen (O$_2$) gases for protons in a broad range of energies, centered in the Bragg peak, was calculated using real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) simulations with Gaussian basis sets. This was done for a kinetic energy of incident protons ($E_k$) ranging from 1.56 keV/amu to 1.6 MeV/amu. $S_e$ was calculated as the average over geometrically pre-sampled short ion trajectories. The average $S_e(E_k)$ values were found to rapidly converge with 25-30 pre-sampled, 2 nm-long ion trajectories. The rt-TDDFT $S_e(E_k)$ curves were compared to experimental and SRIM data, and used to validate the Bragg's Additivity Rule (BAR). Discrepancies were analyzed in terms of basis set effects and omitted nuclear stopping at low energies. At variance with SRIM, we found that BAR is applicable to our rt-TDDFT simulations of $\mathrm{2H_2+O_2}$ $\mathrm{\rightarrow 2H_2O}$ without scaling for $E_k>40$ keV/amu. The hydrogen and oxygen Core and Bond (CAB) contributions to electronic stopping were calculated and found to be slightly smaller than SRIM values as a result of a red-shift in our rt-TDDFT $S_e(E_k)$ curves and a re-distribution of weights due to some bond contributions being neglected in SRIM., Comment: 15 pages 5 figures, 1 table

The numerical integration of the Schr\"odinger equation by discretization of time is explored for the curved manifolds arising from finite representations based on evolving basis states. In particular, the unitarity of the evolution is assessed, in the sense of the conservation of mutual scalar products in a set of evolving states, and with them the conservation of orthonormality and particle number. Although the adequately represented equation is known to give rise to unitary evolution in spite of curvature, discretized integrators easily break that conservation, thereby deteriorating their stability. The Crank Nicolson algorithm, which offers unitary evolution in Euclidian spaces independent of time-step size $\mathrm{d}t$, can be generalised to curved manifolds in different ways. Here we compare a previously proposed algorithm that is unitary by construction, albeit integrating the wrong equation, with a faithful generalisation of the algorithm, which is, however, not strictly unitary for finite $\mathrm{d}t$., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. This note is devoted to the splitting algorithm proposed by Davis and Yin in 2017 for computing a zero of the sum of three maximally monotone operators, with one of them being cocoercive. We provide a direct proof that guarantees its convergence when the stepsizes are smaller than four times the cocoercivity constant, thus doubling the size of the interval established by Davis and Yin. As a by-product, the same conclusion applies to the forward-backward splitting algorithm. Further, we use the notion of "strengthening" of a set-valued operator to derive a new splitting algorithm for computing the resolvent of the sum. Last but not least, we provide some numerical experiments illustrating the importance of appropriately choosing the stepsize and relaxation parameters of the algorithms.

We propose OmniPose, a single-pass, end-to-end trainable framework, that achieves state-of-the-art results for multi-person pose estimation. Using a novel waterfall module, the OmniPose architecture leverages multi-scale feature representations that increase the effectiveness of backbone feature extractors, without the need for post-processing. OmniPose incorporates contextual information across scales and joint localization with Gaussian heatmap modulation at the multi-scale feature extractor to estimate human pose with state-of-the-art accuracy. The multi-scale representations, obtained by the improved waterfall module in OmniPose, leverage the efficiency of progressive filtering in the cascade architecture, while maintaining multi-scale fields-of-view comparable to spatial pyramid configurations. In this work, we develop a systematic framework for computing the resolvent of the sum of two or more monotone operators which only activates each operator in the sum individually. The key tool in the development of this framework is the notion of the "strengthening" of a set-valued operator, which can be viewed as a type of regularisation that preserves computational tractability. After deriving a number of iterative schemes through this framework, we demonstrate their application to best approximation problems, image denoising and elliptic PDEs.

Knowledge of the electronic stopping curve for swift ions, $S_e(v)$, particularly around the Bragg peak, is important for understanding radiation damage. Experimentally, however, the determination of such feature for light ions is very challenging, especially in disordered systems such as liquid water and biological tissue. Recent developments in real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) have enabled the calculation of $S_e(v)$ along nm-sized trajectories. However, it is still a challenge to obtain a meaningful statistically averaged $S_e(v)$ that can be compared to observations. In this work, taking advantage of the correlation between the local electronic structure probed by the projectile and the distance from the projectile to the atoms in the target, we devise a trajectory pre-sampling scheme to select, geometrically, a small set of short trajectories to accelerate the convergence of the averaged $S_e(v)$ computed via rt-TDDFT. For protons in liquid water, we first calculate the reference probability distribution function (PDF) for the distance from the proton to the closest oxygen atom, $\phi_R(r_{p{\rightarrow}O})$, for a trajectory of a length similar to those sampled experimentally. Then, short trajectories are sequentially selected so that the accumulated PDF reproduces $\phi_R(r_{p{\rightarrow}O})$ to increasingly high accuracy. Using these pre-sampled trajectories, we demonstrate that the averaged $S_e(v_p)$ converges in the whole velocity range with less than eight trajectories, while other averaging methods using randomly and uniformly distributed trajectories require approximately ten times the computational effort. This allows us to compare the $S_e(v_p)$ curve to experimental data, and assess widely used empirical tables based on Bragg's rule.

A review of the present status, recent enhancements, and applicability of the SIESTA program is presented. Since its debut in the mid-nineties, SIESTA's flexibility, efficiency and free distribution has given advanced materials simulation capabilities to many groups worldwide. The core methodological scheme of SIESTA combines finite-support pseudo-atomic orbitals as basis sets, norm-conserving pseudopotentials, and a real-space grid for the representation of charge density and potentials and the computation of their associated matrix elements. Here we describe the more recent implementations on top of that core scheme, which include: full spin-orbit interaction, non-repeated and multiple-contact ballistic electron transport, DFT+U and hybrid functionals, time-dependent DFT, novel reduced-scaling solvers, density-functional perturbation theory, efficient Van der Waals non-local density functionals, and enhanced molecular-dynamics options. In addition, a substantial effort has been made in enhancing interoperability and interfacing with other codes and utilities, such as Wannier90 and the second-principles modelling it can be used for, an AiiDA plugin for workflow automatization, interface to Lua for steering SIESTA runs, and various postprocessing utilities. SIESTA has also been engaged in the Electronic Structure Library effort from its inception, which has allowed the sharing of various low level libraries, as well as data standards and support for them, in particular the PSML definition and library for transferable pseudopotentials, and the interface to the ELSI library of solvers. Code sharing is made easier by the new open-source licensing model of the program. Motivated by the radiation damage of solar panels in space, firstly, the results of Monte Carlo particle transport simulations are presented for proton impact on triple-junction Ga$_{0.5}$In$_{0.5}$P/GaAs/Ge solar cells, showing the proton projectile penetration in the cells as a function of energy. It is followed by a systematic {\it ab initio} investigation of the electronic stopping power for protons in different layers of the cell at the relevant velocities via real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) calculations. The electronic stopping power is found to depend significantly on different channeling conditions, which should affect the low velocity damage predictions, and which are understood in terms of impact parameter and electron density along the path. Additionally, we explore the effect of the interface between the layers of the multilayer structure on the energy loss of a proton, along with the effect of strain in the lattice-matched solar cell. Both effects are found to be small compared with the main bulk effect. The interface energy loss has been found to increase with decreasing proton velocity, and in one case, there is an effective interface energy gain., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

Multi-terminal multi-junction solar cells (MJSC) offer higher efficiency potential than series connected (two-terminal) ones. In addition, for terrestrial applications, the efficiency of multi-terminal solar cells is less sensitive to solar spectral variations than the two-terminal series-connected one. In space, generally, cells are always illuminated with AM0 spectrum and no impact is expected from spectral variations. Still, in space, the multi-terminal approach offers some advantages in comparison with the series-connected architecture approach derived from a higher end of life (EOL) efficiency. In this work we review the potential of multi-terminal solar cells for achieving extended EOL efficiencies with emphasis in the potential of the three-terminal heterojunction bipolar transistor solar cell, a novel multi-terminal MJSC architecture with a simplified structure not requiring, for example, tunnel junctions.

First-principles electronic structure calculations are very widely used thanks to the many successful software packages available. Their traditional coding paradigm is monolithic, i.e., regardless of how modular its internal structure may be, the code is built independently from others, from the compiler up, with the exception of linear-algebra and message-passing libraries. This model has been quite successful for decades. The rapid progress in methodology, however, has resulted in an ever increasing complexity of those programs, which implies a growing amount of replication in coding and in the recurrent re-engineering needed to adapt to evolving hardware architecture. The Electronic Structure Library (\esl) was initiated by CECAM (European Centre for Atomic and Molecular Calculations) to catalyze a paradigm shift away from the monolithic model and promote modularization, with the ambition to extract common tasks from electronic structure programs and redesign them as free, open-source libraries. They include "heavy-duty" ones with a high degree of parallelisation, and potential for adaptation to novel hardware within them, thereby separating the sophisticated computer science aspects of performance optimization and re-engineering from the computational science done by scientists when implementing new ideas. It is a community effort, undertaken by developers of various successful codes, now facing the challenges arising in the new model. This modular paradigm will improve overall coding efficiency and enable specialists (computer scientists or computational scientists) to use their skills more effectively. The type 1 pilus is a bacterial filament consisting of a long coiled proteic chain of subunits joined together by non-covalent bonding between complementing $\beta$-strands. Its strength and structural stability are critical for its anchoring function in uropathogenic Escherichia coli bacteria. The pulling and unravelling of the FimG subunit of the pilus was recently studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments and steered molecular dynamics (SMD) simulations [A. Alonso-Caballero et al., Nature Commun. 9, 2758 (2018)]. In this work we perform a quantitative comparison between experiment and simulation, showing a good agreement in the underlying work values for the unfolding. The simulation results are then used to estimate the free energy difference for the detachment of FimG from the complementing strand of the neighbouring subunit in the chain, FimF. Finally, we show that the large free energy difference for the unravelling and detachment of the subunits which leads to the high stability of the chain is entirely entropic in nature., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We propose UniPose, a unified framework for human pose estimation, based on our "Waterfall" Atrous Spatial Pooling architecture, that achieves state-of-art-results on several pose estimation metrics. Current pose estimation methods utilizing standard CNN architectures heavily rely on statistical postprocessing or predefined anchor poses for joint localization. UniPose incorporates contextual segmentation and joint localization to estimate the human pose in a single stage, with high accuracy, without relying on statistical postprocessing methods. The Waterfall module in UniPose leverages the efficiency of progressive filtering in the cascade architecture, while maintaining multi-scale fields-of-view comparable to spatial pyramid configurations. Additionally, our method is extended to UniPose-LSTM for multi-frame processing and achieves state-of-the-art results for temporal pose estimation in Video. Our results on multiple datasets demonstrate that UniPose, with a ResNet backbone and Waterfall module, is a robust and efficient architecture for pose estimation obtaining state-of-the-art results in single person pose detection for both single images and videos.

The electrostatics arising in ferroelectric/dielectric two-dimensional heterostructures and superlatitices is revisited here within a simplest Kittel model, in order to define a clear paradigmatic reference for domain formation. The screening of the depolarizing field in isolated ferroelectric or polar thin films via the formation of 180$^{\circ}$ domains is well understood, whereby the width of the domains $w$ grows as the square-root of the film thickness $d$, following Kittel's law, for thick enough films ($w\ll d$). This behavior is qualitatively unaltered when the film is deposited on a dielectric substrate, sandwiched between dielectrics, and even in a superlattice setting, with just a suitable renormalisation of Kittel's length. As $d$ decreases, $w(d)$ deviates from Kittel's law, reaching a minimum and then diverging onto the mono-domain limit for thin enough films, always assuming a given spontaneous polarization $P$ of the ferrolectric, only modified by linear response to the depolarizing field. In most cases of experimental relevance $P$ would vanish before reaching that thin-film regime. This is not the case for superlattices. Unlike single films, for which the increase of the dielectric constant of the surrounding medium pushes the deviation from the Kittel's regime to lower values of $d$, there is a critical value of the relative thickness of ferroelectric/dielectric films in superlattices beyond which that behavior is reversed, and which defines the separation between strong and weak ferroelectric coupling in superlattices., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

We propose a new efficient architecture for semantic segmentation, based on a "Waterfall" Atrous Spatial Pooling architecture, that achieves a considerable accuracy increase while decreasing the number of network parameters and memory footprint. The proposed Waterfall architecture leverages the efficiency of progressive filtering in the cascade architecture while maintaining multiscale fields-of-view comparable to spatial pyramid configurations. Additionally, our method does not rely on a postprocessing stage with Conditional Random Fields, which further reduces complexity and required training time. We demonstrate that the Waterfall approach with a ResNet backbone is a robust and efficient architecture for semantic segmentation obtaining state-of-the-art results with significant reduction in the number of parameters for the Pascal VOC dataset and the Cityscapes dataset., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

A general theoretical framework for the study of electronic stopping of particle projectiles in crystalline solids is proposed. It neither relies on perturbative or linear response approximations, nor on an ideal metal host. Instead, it exploits the discrete translational symmetries in a space-time diagonal determined by a projectile with constant velocity moving along a trajectory with crystalline periodicity. This allows for the characterisation of (stroboscopically) stationary solutions, by means of Floquet theory for time-periodic systems. Previous perturbative and non-linear jellium models are recovered from this general theory. An analysis of the threshold velocity effect in insulators is presented based on Floquet quasi-energy conservation., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The Boosted Difference of Convex functions Algorithm (BDCA) has been recently introduced to accelerate the performance of the classical Difference of Convex functions Algorithm (DCA). This acceleration is achieved thanks to an extrapolation step from the point computed by DCA via a line search procedure. In this work, we propose an extension of BDCA that can be applied to difference of convex functions programs with linear constraints, and prove that every cluster point of the sequence generated by this algorithm is a Karush--Kuhn-Tucker point of the problem if the feasible set has a Slater point. When the objective function is quadratic, we prove that any sequence generated by the algorithm is bounded and R-linearly (geometrically) convergent. Finally, we present some numerical experiments where we compare the performance of DCA and BDCA on some challenging problems: to test the copositivity of a given matrix, to solve one-norm and infinity-norm trust-region subproblems, and to solve piecewise quadratic problems with box constraints. Our numerical results demonstrate that this new extension of BDCA outperforms DCA.

The Difference of Convex functions Algorithm (DCA) is widely used for minimizing the difference of two convex functions. A recently proposed accelerated version, termed BDCA for Boosted DC Algorithm, incorporates a line search step to achieve a larger decrease of the objective value at each iteration. Thanks to this step, BDCA usually converges much faster than DCA in practice. The solutions found by DCA are guaranteed to be critical points of the problem, but these may not be local minima. Although BDCA tends to improve the objective value of the solutions it finds, these are frequently just critical points as well. In this paper we combine BDCA with a simple Derivative-Free Optimization (DFO) algorithm to force the d-stationarity (lack of descent direction) at the point obtained. The potential of this approach is illustrated through some computational experiments on a Minimum-Sum-of-Squares clustering problem. Our numerical results demonstrate that the new method provides better solutions while still remains faster than DCA in the majority of test cases.

Macroscale continuum mechanics simulations rely on material properties stemming from the microscale, which are normally described using phenomenological equations of state (EOS). A method is proposed for the automatic generation of first-principles unconstrained EOSs using a Gaussian process on a set of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, thereby closing the continuum equations. We illustrate it on a hyperelasticity simulation of bulk silicon using density-functional theory (DFT), following the dynamics of shock waves after a cylindrical region is instantaneously heated., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The rate of energy transfer from ion projectiles onto the electrons of a solid target is hard to determine experimentally in the velocity regime between the adiabatic limit and the Bragg peak. First-principles simulations have lately offered relevant new insights and quantitative information for prototypical homogeneous materials. Here we study the influence of structural anisotropy on electronic stopping power with time-dependent density functional theory simulations of a hydrogen projectile in graphite. The projectile traveled at a range of angles and impact parameters for velocities between 0.1 and 1.4 a.u., and the electronic stopping power was calculated for each simulation. After validation with average experimental data, the anisotropic crystal structure was found to have a strong influence on the stopping power, with a difference between simulations parallel and perpendicular to the graphite plane of up to 25%, more anisotropic than expected based on previous work. The velocity dependence at low velocity displays clear linear behavior in general, except for projectiles traveling perpendicular to graphitic layers, for which a threshold-like behavior is obtained. For projectiles traveling along graphitic planes metallic behaviour is observed with a change of slope when the projectile velocity reaches the Fermi velocity of the electrons., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The Douglas-Rachford method, a projection algorithm designed to solve continuous optimization problems, forms the basis of a useful heuristic for solving combinatorial optimization problems. In order to successfully use the method, it is necessary to formulate the problem at hand as a feasibility problem with constraint sets having efficiently computable nearest points. In this self-contained tutorial, we develop the convergence theory of projection algorithms within the framework of fixed point iterations, explain how to devise useful feasibility problem formulations, and demonstrate the application of the Douglas-Rachford method to said formulations. The paradigm is then illustrated on two concrete problems: a generalization of the "eight queens puzzle" known as the "(m,n)-queens problem", and the problem of constructing a probability distribution with prescribed moments.

Electric coupling between subcells of a monolithically grown multijunction solar cell in short circuit allows their simultaneous and independent characterization by means of photo- and electroreflectance. The photovoltage generated by selective absorption of the pump beam in a given subcell during photoreflectance measurements results in reverse biasing the complementary subunits at the modulation frequency set on the pump illumination. Such voltage bias modulation acts then as external perturbation on the complementary subcells. The spectral separation of the different subcell absorption ranges permits the probe beam to record in a single spectrum the response of the complete device as a combination of photo- and electroreflectance, thereby providing access for diagnosis of subcells on an individual basis.
